It has been a WEEK, lemme tell you. This is our team mantra lately, so I spent 5 minutes and made posters for our desks. I cannot control what I do not own. I cannot own what I do not control. #locusofcontrol https://www.instagram.com/p/CTFwvBzJp1n/?utm_medium=tumblr

The psychological concept "Internal Locus of Control" is everything this quote is. I believe often times this way of thinking not only saves your energy and time but also makes you happier overall. Do you have an internal locus or control or an external locus of control? I don’t know if there is a right or wrong answer. An internal locus of control acknowledges that you are in charge of your own life and everything that happens to you. An external locus of control acknowledges that life happens to you, and you adjust accordingly. I like to balance my perspective because I find too much emphasis on one mentality over the other causes an imbalance within myself. #alchemy #center #focus #lettinggo #forgiveness #rainydays #lawofattraction #positivity #universal #insight #locusofcontrol #psychology #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #amunarhealing

Julian Rotter's theory was based on the basic principle of motivation; people are motivated to seek reinforcement and avoid punishment. He believed that personality was a relatively stable set of potential responses to various situations. If a certain way of responding led to a reinforcing or pleasurable consequence in the past, that way of responding would become a pattern or part of the personality.
One important concept of Rotter's is locus of control, which is the tendency for people to assume  that they either have control or do not have control over events and consequences in their lives. People are internal in locus of control if they assume that their actions and decisions directly affect the consequences they experience. People are external in locus of control if they assume their lives are more controlled by powerful others, luck, or fate. According to Rotter, people that have a high internal locus of control were associated with personality characteristics of high achievement motivation. People that gave up too quickly or attribute events in their lives to external causes could fall into patterns of learned helplessness.
Rotter also believed that an interaction of factors would determine behavioral patterns that become personality. There were two key factors that influence a person's decision to act in a certain way given a particular situation, expectancy and reinforcement value. Expectancy is similar to Bandura's concept of self-efficacy. It refers to the person's subjective feeling that a particular behavior will lead to a reinforcing consequence. A high expectancy for success is also based on past experiences with successes and failures. Reinforcement value is an individual's preference for a particular reinforcer over all other possible reinforcing consequences. A particular circumstance that is more appealing to us has a higher reinforcement value than other possible reinforcers.

Week 7: Locus of Control: Where is my 'locus of control' and what does this mean to me?
Tumblr media
                                 -Locus of Control-
The Locus of Control refers to how much control I have over my life and surroundings.
As I covered in Week 6, with theories of intelligence I looked at the 8 basic intelligence's that Howard Gardner perceives to determine our higher state. This in my view determines what our locus of control might sway towards.
For Example; Visual or Spatial intelligences' would lend itself to assist a painter in regards to media and form of work he is about to undertake. In turn, his 'locus of control' might go to reassure him that psychologically he has the upper hand.
Personally, my 'locus' falls on the higher side of internal. This is not surprising as the majority of males are more internal, where as women are more external. Trying to define my 'locus' is easy but, by defining certain characteristics I can see where I may be going array.
Conflict Resolution, negative speech, pessimism are all the areas where I feel that are sufficient. Grand.
But; Taking on to much, insufficient sleep and poor diet are all areas where I could certainly improve.
So, where is my 'locus of control'? I'm still unsure, but what I do know is the areas to focus on and this in my view is getting to grips with my inner locus.

January 25, 2014- The Dole Plantation
Today, we drove all the way from downtown Honolulu to North Shore to visit the Dole Plantation. I got the chance to learn about James Drummond Dole, the man often known as the “Pineapple King.” When we graduated from college, he received $50 as a gift. It is said that he has internal locus of control because he believed in saving money. When he earned enough in addition that $50, he moved to Hawaii and bought 61- acre land, which eventually became a large plantation growing mainly pineapple but also sugarcane, banana and other exotic fruits.
Going there and learning about Mr. James Dole made me think, “Why do we do what we do?” Why did James Dole choose to leave behind his familiar life to move to Hawaii? Being a Harvard graduate, why did he choose to dive into the uncertainty of a business that did not guarantee success? Was he motivated by the money he thought he could earn or by some other source of motivation?
As the tour went on, I learned that James Dole chose to move to Hawaii and purchased a piece of land because he strongly believed that Hawaii could play a huge role in the growth of agriculture around America at that time.
It was not any external factors such as money that truly motivated him but his inner belief that Hawaii was a land filled with opportunities and potential for development. I learned today that often times if not all the time, intrinsic motivation trumps extrinsic motivation and is much more powerful.
