🍬 Treat! Here's an excerpt from The Power and the Glory (warning for referenced patricide played for laughs. Now there's an unusual sentence!):

"The mistake people always make in trying to sneak out of a place," Lian said in the voice of one who spoke both with authority and from experience, "is to try to be clever. They gather a large supply of food then leave it until midnight before they leave. Anyone who catches them knows at once what they're doing and it's no use trying to make excuses. No, the way to sneak out is to go in broad daylight. Don't bring anything with you except money. Act as if you're going to the shops and will be back in an hour or two. No one will pay any attention and you can get a good distance away before they become suspicious." Abi nodded. "So we just pretend we're going on a shopping trip. But we can't go together or someone will start to ask questions." "No one stops you from going sight-seeing," Lian said. "I'll explain everything to Lady Yuan and tell everyone else I'm going on an errand. We'll meet outside the post office." "What about Zi Yao?" Mirio asked. "I'll leave instructions for his care. Hopefully I'll be back within the week, and he should be all right in the palace physicians' care until then." Abi looked uncomfortable. "I'm sorry. I've uprooted your life here, haven't I?" Lian nodded. "Don't be too upset. I've had leave places very quickly many times before. At least this time I'm not being chased away and have a chance of being allowed to return. Besides, matheríarduan kalugan*, a phrase I should have paid more attention to a long time ago." "Irímé's going to join us somewhere," Abi said. "I suppose we'll meet up with him in Tananerl." Both Lian and Mirio looked blank. Lian asked, "Who?" At the same time Mirio said, "How do you know? How does he know anything about this?" There was a moment's uncomfortable silence in which Abi appeared to be trying to think of a convincing lie. At last she gave it up. "This is going to sound insane." "More insane than necromancy-created monsters attacking a town? More insane than a random doctor just happening to be your long-lost brother?" "…Fair point. Well, to summarise, I accidentally got a distant cousin possessed. Then I got him unpossessed, and now we're telepathically linked. I asked him to find out what's happening on Muirus 9436. Irímé's working for him, so he said he's going to send him to help." Lian held up his hand. "Two questions. Which distant cousin? And who is Irímé?" "Ilaran, Prince of Tananerl. Do you know him?" Lian shook his head. "Heard of him but never met him. Didn't he kill his own father?" "…Maybe, but that's not important," Abi said, while in the background Mirio exclaimed, "What?" Lian nodded slowly, looking as if he was beginning to question everyone's sanity. "You're telepathically linked to the Prince of Tananerl who is giving you updates on what happens on planet what's-its-name. All right. Now who is Irímé and why would he be any use on this mission? Is he a necromancer too?" "He's my fiancé. He's coming because fire kills the monsters, and he's a dragon immortal." There was another pause while Lian tried to wrap his mind around all of this new information. "I see," he said at last, in a voice that implied he didn't really see. "Well, we'd better start planning our route."

it’s hilarious bc when i first read the books i was SO ready for darklina to be a fun enemies to lovers arc, maybe with an alina corruption arc thrown in, but the darkling was so,,,boring. i haven’t seen the show yet but i’m glad they’re making it even more toxic on the show

i see!! it's interesting to hear book readers' perspectives. and yeah the show has done a really great job. like i hated his guts sm 😤 also i heard that mal and alina are kinda crappy in the books, but you'll be glad to know that they are some of the BEST characters, development and personality and just overall, throughout the show :)

also the darkling bores me too like damn if ur gonna be emo at least have a GOOD backstory die so i don't have to yawn anymore 🤧

hey i’ve been seeing you rb a lot of welcome to night vale stuff on my dash, and i was wondering if it’s worth taking a look at. id considered it before but never had a chance to get into it

i think you should 100% give it a chance. i listened to it on a whim bc i was bored and i needed a way to distress. i haven’t finished the first season yet but i’m in love. i’m guessing you know the premise but if you don’t it’s basically a podcast set in the fictional town of nightvale where weird and creepy things happen. the whole thing is narrated by cecil through the layout of the towns radio station. (i’ve described it really bad. i suck at descriptions.) it’s a comedy horror podcast and i usually hate horror but welcome to night vale is different because the plot and execution is immaculate. it’s also done the whole podcast format really well, with recurring sections that are infamous throughout the fandom (The Weather is everyone’s favourite). and cecil’s voice is so soothing and smooth. it also has amazing representation of queer, poc, muslim and jewish characters.

i love to just put it on at the end of the day and just listen to the events of night vale unwind (no matter how weird and creepy they are). 20/10 would recommend. it’s a podcast that seems meh when you first hear about but as soon as you finish the first episode you’re like “maybe one more and another..and another… and another“ and then you’re just hooked.

TL;DR give nightvale a try because it has something for everybody.

There was a coldness in his eyes that Lian had never seen before, and he was holding… Oh. When Mirio last saw the photos of Lian's parents he hadn't seemed to recognise them. Obviously he had now. Meeting Abihira must have reminded him. Lian stepped into the room and closed the door behind him. No point in letting the servants hear everything. It would be all over the palace within hours if they did. Mirio put the photos back on the table and stood up. An uncomfortable silence fell. "What do you think they mean?" Lian asked at last. Mirio blinked in confusion. Lian elaborated, "The photos. You must have some theory about them." Slowly Mirio said, "I have. But nothing I've thought of makes any sense." "Then ask me. I'll tell you the truth." It struck Lian suddenly that he'd wanted Mirio to figure everything out. He just hadn't expected the awkwardness that would inevitably follow. With surprising bluntness Mirio asked, "Are you Abi's brother?" "Yes." "…Does she know?" "Yes. I've just talked to her." Mirio relaxed slightly. "I suppose it's none of my business. But I think of Abi as my real sister, not just as a foster sister, and I will do my best to protect her if at all possible. So I must ask: what did you do to get banished?" "What makes you assume I was banished?" "No one has ever mentioned your existence. Either you're illegitimate, in which case you would only have a photo of one of Abi's parents, or you did something scandalous. And if it was scandalous enough to ensure no one ever spoke of you again, then…" "You're afraid I'll be a bad influence?" Lian finished. "Or that I'm dangerous? What I did was… Well, it was very simple, really. I meddled in necromancy and accidentally killed myself. Then I brought myself back to life."

thinking about fflewddur flam rn and now i’m sad that taran didn’t just go with everyone to the summerlands

ITS SO SAD. I understand why Taran didn’t choose to go to the summerlands because prydain needs a leader to help them rebuild - specifically the part of his speech about promising to replant Colls garden and finish Rhun’s seawall always get me. But out of all the ones who left him behind,  Fflewddur hurt the most. He could have chosen to stay behind like Eilonwy and Gurgi too. Truth-coloring aside, he was always the level headed one who mediated the bickering and helped come up with plans and loyally fought alongside them. He would have made such a great advisor for Taran as the new high king - he even has experience ruling his own little kingdom! I really wish we could have seen that dynamic and it’s the one thing I’d change about the finale. :(

ahaha that is awesome thank you! and i guess maybe that’s true- people are always surprised when i tell them i’m an archer or that i know how to swordfight or that i love knifethrowing. they always are interested when they learn i’m a drummer, or that i fish, or that i sometimes write songs. so yeah!
