Fruits Basket Queer Headcanons

The more I watch and read Fruits Basket, the more I get the sense that no one is straight here. Well... almost no one. So, in honor of pride month, here are my queer headcanons for the cast of Fruits Basket!

(Disclaimer that these are my own personal headcanons, obviously nothing official, etc... I try to draw on evidence from the text, but I'll admit I'm occasionally going purely off vibe. Also, I'm bi and genderfluid, so that's the lens I'm bringing to this. I'd love to hear your headcanons, especially if they differ from mine! Enjoy!)

Genderfluid and/or genderqueer: Ayame and Ritsu

I (probably somewhat controversially) think a lot of the gender non-conformity among Fruits Basket characters is just that: gender non-conformity. Momiji is one example; he dresses in girls' clothing (though not "like a girl") until his growth spurt, but it seems important to him to be seen as a man from at least that point forward.

Ritsu is someone whose gender identity and/or nonconformity really should've been explored more in the manga - as written, it feels like Ritsu's exploration of gender was viewed as something he'd grow out of, rather than a search for understanding himself. He doesn't really seem to mind being identified as either male or female, though he obviously feels a lot of shame about his comfort with wearing women's clothes (though no one around him when we meet him really seems to mind, which is nice-- I also appreciate that Ritsu was shown to have friends who adore him outside of the Sohmas). Anyway, the fact that he seems okay with being referred to as both a man and a woman is the entire basis for this headcanon.

Ritsu also idolizes Ayame, and I think part of this stems from Ayame's own security in his non-traditional gender presentation. We don't really get a lot of Ayame's thoughts on gender, despite his line of work, but he strikes me as the sort of person who would enjoy playing with his own gender presentation and would be more than open to exploring his gender identity (and probably has!). I think Ayame would lean more toward having an expansive view of masculinity rather than dressing more feminine when he feels more feminine, but I also think he would embrace the different ways people might perceive his gender.

Transgender Woman: Akito Sohma

This I think is quite clear in canon. Akito was assigned male at birth, then transitioned to female.

What makes it hard for some people to see Akito as trans is that the reason she was assigned male at birth was not the typical reason people are assigned male at birth in our world (it was her mother's demand, rather than a guess based on the shape of her genitals), but I don't think that makes her any less trans.

Under the Ace and/or Aro Umbrellas

This umbrella is a little tricky for several of these characters, because they've been forbidden from dating, or had very controlling parents, or thought they'd only hurt anyone they loved, so they haven't necessarily had time to figure out whether they've just repressed that part of themselves or they just don't experience attraction at all/without a strong emotional connection first. (Not everyone needs time to figure that out, though!) But anyway, here's who I think would eventually find themselves under at least one of these umbrellas!

Asexual/Aromantic: Kazuma

I love the tidbit that Kazuma tried dating women, but talked so much about Kyo that he never got a second date. I like the interpretation of him as a gay man, but to me, he reads as asexual/aromantic. Dating just doesn't even seem to be on his radar!

Demisexual/Demiromantic: Kyo, Shigure, Machi

A lot of the fandom sees Kyo as demi, and I'm totally here for that interpretation of him. He generally seems annoyed by or frightened of girls who aren't Tohru (frightened either when there's a risk of transforming, or when Kagura is involved). Also, it's CUTE that Kyo takes after his dad (Kazuma) in this way.

At first blush, it seems very unlikely Shigure is under the ace umbrella, but I couldn't stop thinking about his brief relationship with Mayu. He's the one who suggested they date, yet he seemed completely disinterested in her. He did sleep with Ren, but that was only for revenge and because he imagined Akito would look like her if she'd been allowed to grow up as a woman. I genuinely believe all his "high school girls" ickiness was an act, much like most of his personality.

It doesn't seem like Machi can totally tell if/when she likes something (or someone!). This makes me wonder if she's just never had feelings for anyone before Yuki.

Demiromantic: Rin, Hiro

Rin seems open to sexual relations with people other than Haru, but I genuinely can't see her having romantic feelings for anyone other than him. I see Hiro similarly with respect to Kisa. I think, if they ever split, it would take an extremely long time for him to even be open to falling for someone else.

Under the Bi/Pan+ Umbrella

So, I'm not making a distinction between these two (and other orientations that fall under the same umbrella, like poly- or omnisexual) because that seems like a very personal, internal conversation. I know some people make a distinction between the way bi and pan people experience attraction, but some don't, and that feels too prescriptivist for my purposes here. So, these are characters who I think experience attraction to multiple genders!

Tohru obviously falls for Kyo, but she also thinks Akito is cute, she thinks Rin is "shapely" and "beautiful" (her words!), and she goes along with it when Saki talks about them getting married.

Yuki ends up with Machi (and I love them together!) but I think Kyo was his first crush. His arc is also very relatable for a lot of queer folks (myself included!). And he's a disaster. Long live bisexual disaster Yuki Sohma!

Shigure is tricky, because the flirtation between him and Ayame could just be a joke, but I personally think it's a joke that arose out of some fun nights spent together...

Akito obviously likes men, but she also flirts with Tohru when they first meet.

Saki talks about marrying both Tohru and Kazuma. She's probably joking about Kazuma, but she's generally a very literal person, so I don't think she's joking about Tohru. She also marries a foreigner canonically, and that foreigner is probably a man.

Momiji talks about finding an amazing sweetheart-- not an amazing wife or girlfriend!!-- one day. I think he was being very intentional in not specifying his future partner's gender.

Hatori is the one I feel least sure of, but my headcanon is that he gets so annoyed and embarrassed by Shigure and Ayame because he doesn't want anyone to know he was totally part of at least a few of those trysts...

Mutsuki and Hajime are definitely together, right? And it seems like the fandom mostly sees Mutsuki as bi, which... yeah, that tracks.

Hatsuharu's first love was Yuki, and his last love was Rin.

Kakeru has a girlfriend, but for some reason, I have it in my head that he always refers to Kyo as Yuki's "hot cousin"? Did I just imagine that? Anyway... even if I did make that up, I think his backstory is a great analogy for the experience of coming out. He was trying to fit in a box and decided he was done with it. Pure chaotic bi energy.

Gay and Lesbian

Hiroshi has always struck me as gay. I can't really explain it. I usually have absolutely awful gaydar, so it's odd that he gives me such clear gay vibes. I wrote him as gay in my longfic, Bloom Within Us, and I'll probably always write him as gay.

President Takei obviously has a crush on Yuki. We don't really see him show interest in anyone else (partially because he's such a minor character). He also seems to still be a bachelor in Another, which could be because he can't legally marry yet...

My headcanon that Kunimitsu is gay kind of popped up as I was writing Bloom Within Us. There's no particular reason, and he doesn't give me strong gay vibes or anything.

Hajime and Mutsuki are definitely a couple! (Right?!) And it seems like most of the fandom sees Hajime as gay which... yeah, I can get behind that.

Akimoto (Arisa's senpai from her gang) is another character who gives me such strong vibes that I thought it was canon that she was a lesbian. Whoops. Anyway, I headcanon that Akimoto is gay, and referenced that in one of my oneshots.

Controversial omission: Arisa Uotani. She says she likes Kureno because he reminds her of Tohru, but she doesn't like Tohru? Yes, she gives me major queer vibes but this to me points to her being straight. Also, based on the way she reacts to her friends developing crushes or falling in love (and the way they react to her falling in love), I don't think there's anything between her and Saki or her and Tohru (as much as I love fics that pair her with Saki!). I also think not every relationship with lots of physical affection and strong feelings of love has to be romantic.

Anyway, hope you enjoyed reading my queer headcanons! This has been in my drafts for months, so I'm really glad Pride Month gave me a reason to finish this post!

Mutsuki Sohma Headcanons

• He was born on February 18th (possibly in either 2004 or 2005) • Yuki was 23 and Machi was 22 when he was born (according to my hc. I don't think it's been confirmed in canon.) • He was kind of an accident, ngl • Kids were something Yuki and Machi had discussed, but they weren't sure if they wanted to have them, and if they did, they wanted to wait longer • They expected Mutsuki to be a calm baby because most of the babies they had been around were fairly calm.... they were very wrong • He cried almost constantly as a baby, and it kind of destroyed Machi and Yuki's confidence as parents • It also made them feel worse because it felt like everyone else could calm him down except for them; Tohru could calm him just by holding him; Kakeru and Ayame could pull a silly face and easily get him to giggle. But it seemed like nothing his parents did could get him to calm down • He grew out of that, though, and was a very happy toddler, albeit very wild and mischevious. Like, runs around in circles and colors on the walls kind of wild • The amount of "I looked away for ONE second" stories Yuki and Machi have about him is astronomical • His parents loved him with all their hearts, though, even if he was a wild child (but between his crying as a baby and his hyperactivity throughout childhood, they never wanted another child. Ever.) • Uncle Kakeru is one of his favorite people in the entire world, much to Yuki and Machi's dismay • Mutsuki even went through a phase of calling Tohru "grandma" when he was 6-7 just because Kakeru convinced him to (Kakeru and Mutsuki thought it was hilarious, but every time he said it, the more Yuki wanted to punch his brother-in-law in the face) • Uncle Ayame is also fun, mostly because Mutsuki likes how he messes with his dad • Kyo and Tohru were also around a lot throughout his childhood and he loved getting to visit them • Other than Kakeru and his parents, though, his favorite adult was Hatsuharu. • He also developed a really close bond with his cousin Michi, who was really more like an older sister to him • Mutsuki was also always very close to Hajime; during family events, they would usually sneak off together to play soccer or cards • Also, even though he has no younger siblings of his own, he kind of adopted some of his cousins (hajime's siblings, Shiki, Sora and Riku, Kou, etc.) as siblings • He wasn't the kind of caring Hajime was, where he would look after you when you were sick or cook you dinner; Mutsuki was more of the "I'll teach you to play baseball" or "if you did something bad, i wont tell the parents unless your life is in danger, I'll just help you" kind of older sibling • Mutsuki loves to talk to people. He can make friends with just about anyone he meets fairly easily and can make a joke our of almost anything; just be careful if he starts being too nice because he might have some ulterior motives (nothing sinister, just mischevious) • His parents often make jokes about how he must have been swapped at birth because he's so little like them in personality; everyone knows it isn't true of course because he's Yuki's spitting image • One way in which he does take after his parents is his ability (or lack thereof) for doing housework • His house was never a complete mess, but it was never picture-perfect either. Machi still tended to have outbursts if things got too perfect (although not as extreme) so nothing in their home ever was perfect; it was more like an organized chaos • So, Mutsuki never really learned how to clean properly • He tended to find comfort in untidyness as well and, like his mother, would often make a mess if he got overwhelmed • Unlike Machi, it wasn't any sort of trauma brought on by perfection that made him act that way. But messiness was something that he was used to; so when life got unfamiliar and crazy, making a bit of a mess made him feel more at home • Mutsuki also cannot cook to save his life • He likes to try to cook; he thinks it's fun. But no one ever eats the food he makes, if you could even call it food

(his parents would try his food at first, until they realized Mutsuki did not actually care if people ate it, he just wanted to do it. the only person who ever does try it is Hajime, who feels bad if he doesn't try it) • He is bi and has kind of just always known it and it's just always been accepted in hid house • He never truly came out or anything like that • Mutsuki never dated anyone until highschool, when he started dating Hajime • He had been in love with Hajime since he was 10, and was just waiting for them to be together • A lot of their classmates were concerned because they thought Hajime and Mutsuki were related, which Hajime always refuted. Mutsuki, on the other hand would go along with it. • He's the king of chaos, and loved seeing how confused and concerned people got • Mutsuki found out about the Sohma curse just after Hajime did; Hajime came to visit Yuki right after his parents told him everything, and Mutsuki was obviously curious about what had gotten him so upset. So after Hajime had been calmed down, Yuki sat down with Mutsuki and explained • Mutsuki just kind of... accepted the information. It upset him to know that his dad and loved ones had gone through that, but he didn't react as negatively as Hajime, nor did he think his dad was lying at first. • The story did inspire him, though, and that's part of why he has the easy-going, fun attitude he does. His parents worked hard to give him a happy life, so he lives it to the fullest

I have a headcannon that Kyo actually took Tohru’s last name. Not only because he doesn’t have a strong connection to his family and because he wants to honour Kyoko. But because as much progress as Tohru has made with not tying herself to her mother that sort of trauma doesn’t go away over night. And even though at first she was fine with taking Sohma as her last name - happy even because it meant she could be further tied to so many people who she has come to love so much - as things were getting closer to the wedding Kyo could see she was shutting down a bit even if she lied about it. Because it made her anxious to feel like she was about to cut off the very last tether she had to her mother. Like she was fully and truly saying goodbye and she wasn’t ready for that. But she didn’t want to bring it up. I feel like maybe the idea of having a joint last name came up (and maybe they went with it lol) but I don’t know. I just feel like Kyo would be able to see how important it was to her , and sort of him in a way as well, so he could keep Kyoko close as well, so he reassured it was okay and they went with Honda.

And that Yuki and Machi went with Sohma because that was part of the process for Yuki to reclaim who he is and accept himself, even the past and parts he didn’t like. And Machi wasn’t really fussed either way - that or she was happy to leave her family name behind her and not be associated with that part of her past anymore. I feel like it would have been a big step for Yuki too. Like I’m not going to run away from my name or what it has meant for me. Even if it hurts I’m going to embrace it and make it my own thing with new happy memories and having Machi walk alongside him and “accept” that name too would have been really special and important to him. And getting to see his son be a Sohma but get love and acceptance would have been cathartic for him I think.

Fruits Basket Another headcanon

Yuki and Machi were considering having a baby but were a little nervous about it.

Then Kyo and Tohru had Hajime, and Kakeru and Komaki had Michi. Both of them were very sweet-natured, quiet babies, so Yuki and Machi took the plunge, and the next year, Mutsuki was born.

Total hellchild.

A couple years later, Machi's tubes are tied and Yuki has had a vasectomy. They do love their son, but they decided that one was enough.

Adulting: What did everyone do after the curse broke?

So, I have a LOT of headcanons as to what the different characters did after the curse broke. We do get several answers in Another, but for the answers we don't get, here's what I think happened!

Tohru: I don't think the specific nature of her job would be terribly important to her, so much as just entering into the workforce. From her outfit in the Prelude epilogue, it seems like she's not doing manual labor (like cleaning, which was what I initially thought she'd be doing, since she had experience). I wonder if she's an employee at a school; her colleague kind of looks like an elementary or middle school teacher to me. I don't think Tohru would be able to teach without further education, and she was very clear that she did not want to pursue further study. I'm not sure if Japan has classified staff/paraprofessionals or an equivalent, but I think she'd be amazing at that job. I also think she probably became a stay-at-home parent as soon as she and Kyo had the means for her to do so.

Kyo: we know he became a karate instructor, and I just bet he's a fabulous teacher. I think him eventually taking over the Sohma dojo would be a full circle moment for both him and the Sohma family.

Saki: I can honestly see a lot of different jobs for her. Some favorites that I've seen in fanfic are art gallery employee, ghost hunter, and food critic. I have her becoming a hairstylist in Bloom Within Us, after attending beauty school through correspondence. Her clients ADORE her and she uses her wave-reading to make sure they're satisfied and tell them anything they really need to hear. It's common for appointments to end with her clients crying and hugging her because she's just healed some childhood wound of theirs. I could also see her becoming a ritual mortician, preparing the departed for their funeral (which would include hair, makeup, etc...) I think she'd be really good at working with grieving families and getting the deceased to look just right.

Arisa: she worked to put herself through junior college after she moved in with Kureno (though they had the money, she insisted on doing it for herself), and became a nurse in elder care. She makes friends with the crankiest old folks and cries like a baby when one of them dies.

Yuki: I shared in my Yuki headcanons post that I see Yuki going into politics and eventually working in international relations. I see him wanting to see the world far outside of the Sohma estate.

Machi: I always pictured her becoming an accountant.

Kakeru: we know he goes to college, and that he wants to help Komaki's family with their business, so I always assumed he'd major in something that would help with that. Maybe business management?

Momiji: we know he went on to take over his father's corporation. In my Momiji headcanons post, I shared that I see him going to university in Germany, and getting his MBA (or the equivalent). I think he'd need to know this before beginning his third year, so I suspect his father sat him down at some point during his second year to bring up the possibility of taking over his business, and told Momiji of his intent to "adopt" him so he could officially be part of their family again without raising his mother's suspicions (in Japan, it's common for CEOs to adopt their successors). I think this is what would've led Momiji to pursue business instead of music. I do think music is probably still a huge part of his life; I suspect he still plays violin casually, and he probably has a season subscription to orchestras in both Tokyo and Berlin (or wherever the German branch of his father's company is).

Kagura: she studied childcare, and I actually think that's a spectacular fit for her. When she's not being a total yandere over Kyo, she's a very nurturing and big-sisterly character.

Rin: so, I think Rin would continue to have major health problems for the rest of her life, and would probably struggle to find work that accommodates her needs and doesn't trigger any of her stress-related symptoms. I think she'd have short stints in a few jobs, like maybe retail, or modeling, or something artistic or design-y, but eventually I could see her just taking commissions for her own artwork when she feels like it. She seems like someone who wants very badly to contribute, and I think it would take a lot for her to accept that her body won't let her work full-time or on someone else's schedule, but Haru (and all her friends) would gently encourage her to take better care of herself, and at some point I think she'd accept that working for someone else just isn't sustainable for her long-term. (Though, pregnancy would also be extremely risky for her, and I'm surprised they had kids, let alone TWINS.)

Haru: I love that he does metalwork and makes most of his own accessories, so I always imagine him continuing that. I could also see him picking up odd jobs (like dog-walking? why does that seem like something he'd do?) from time to time. I think an independent, artisan-type job would suit him best.

Kisa and Hiro: most of the fandom seems to have Kisa becoming a teacher and Hiro becoming a lawyer, and those are absolutely perfect jobs for them.

Ritsu and Mitsuru: I like to imagine that Ritsu goes to work for Ayame, specializing in styling traditional clothing. This is how Ritsu comes back around to wearing whatever tf he wants, which ends up being a mix of "women's" kimonos and more flamboyant menswear (like his idol, Ayame). He and Mitsuru do eventually get married, and Mitsuru's the one who ends up running the onsen, because that girl deserves to relax!!!

Ayame, Mine, Shigure, Akito, Hatori, and Mayu: we mostly know what these characters do as of Another, and I don't have a ton to add except for Mayu (see below).

Megumi: Since we know Megumi becomes a teacher at Kaibara, I also headcanon that Mayu's still a much-loved teacher at Kaibara in Another, and that she and Megumi are work besties who like to mess with Makoto Takei when he's being especially obnoxious. I also headcanon that Mayu eventually introduces him to his future wife, since we know he likes older women.

Kureno: I imagine he'd become someone else's assistant; even better if he can work from home.

Yusuke and Hiroshi: In Bloom Within Us, Yusuke helps his dad run a grocery they own, and Hiroshi becomes a doctor (GP). I think, if I were only going off canon and not the elaborate backstories I created for them, I could imagine Hiroshi being someone who emcees events (almost a la Ryan Seacrest? but on a much smaller scale) and Yusuke I could see working at a University as like, a freshman advisor or residence life director. Basically someone who makes sure everyone's adjusting well to the campus and who people can go to with questions. I could actually see both of them doing this.

Kimi and Nao: side note, I kind of ship these two? But anyway, I can see Nao becoming a very stressed out CEO or (more likely) director of a non-profit, and I can totally see Kimi as someone whose job it is to secure donations for that non-profit, which she absolutely does by flirting with prospective donors. They'd be almost frighteningly effective when working together...

They went to the fair or Disney World, something like this

Tohru said she never ate cotton candy so Kyo told her he would bring her some, turned out he was the only one who went to the fair when he was younger with Haru, Momiji and Kagura

Tohru and Yuki prepared sandwiches while Kyo was teaching Machi how to pack up things because he caught her throwing random things in her bag like a can opener ???

They decided to go in the morning but Yuki had a hard time to wake up

When they arrived the boys were happy that it wasn’t too crowded

They started with mini golf and Yuki beat Kyo so he got upset, Tohru kept missing the ball so she got upset too

They did bumping cars and Kyo got uncomfortable so Tohru went on the bench with him, Yuki got bullied by Machi, at some point, she was chasing him with her car

They had a picnic break next to a lake and Tohru took pictures of the food for her Pinterest moodboard

Tohru lived her best life on the rotating swings, she was laughing at loud in euphoria

Yuki got sick and threw up his lunch after the rotating swings and Kyo called him ‘Princess’

They went to the haunted house and Tohru kept screaming, Machi said she will protect her, she ended up punching a comedian, Tohru realized it was fake and she said that Comedian-san needed to get a promotion

Kyo got Tohru cotton candy and she cried of happiness, he told her to stop

Machi said it was like eating some fairy’s hairs and Yuki just stopped eating

They did rollercoasters and Tohru was crying but she was having fun, Yuki was too silent, turned out he fainted

They got kicked out when Machi tried to free the monkeys at the zoo because she was sad for them, Tohru said it was the best double date ever and Yuki thanked Kyo for his patience

Hmm, it depends on when they meet her, like which time's Akito. Old Akito (the god) or new Akito (after her change) so i will write both.

Kakeru-Akito;

- Kakeru's character is more like Ayame (and Kyo) so because of his loud personality, (old)Akito would mostly ignore him, even Kakeru tried to talk with her.

- (New) Akito wouldnt really ignore him but time to time, she would feel awkward around him, wouldnt know how to handle him but maybe eventually, she will get to used to him more.

Kimi-Akito;

- Kimi is feminine girl who likes to act flirty, she could try to flirt with Akito since she likes rich people and (old) Akito would dislike her a lot.

- (New) Akito may not dislike her but wouldnt really close with her either, probably.

Naohito-Akito;

- They are both serious type, they wouldnt have problem with each others.

- Same, they wouldnt have much problem but maybe they could be closer, maybe.

Machi-Akito;

- Both Machi and (old)Akito ignore unnecessary interactions so they would ignore each others as possible as they can.

- (New) Akito is like newborn baby, she is like new to world so she could be in a sitution where she needs help and Machi pay attention to people and could help her so they could be friends, close friends maybe, not sure.

Just had some headcanons about Machi pop into my head that I wanted to share with yall. So we know this poor girl struggles with "perfect"/neat things right? Well I was thinking about some healthy coping mechanisms she could develop to replace the whole 'breaking property/living in a dump' thing & here's what I got so far -

1. She always tries to wear odd socks (unless she's invited somewhere nice)

2. Ayame & Mine help her find cool asymmetrical stuff to wear, how to make clashing colours/patterns work for her & teach her how to sew up her old clothes in a more "punk rock" way (after Yuki & Kakeru explain some of her issues with perfection)

3. Tohru gently points out that she dosn't have to tie her laces the same way on both shoes if she dosn't want to

4. Haru & Rin (awkwardly on her part) teach her the power of acessorising (ie. wearing only one earing, putting on an uneven amount of bracelets/rings/necklaces, adding paper clips of different sizes & colours to your clothing & Machi later ends up adding stuff like buttons to her outfits/belongings as well which Haru & Rin are tottally surppotive of despite thier difference in style) & hair/makeup which (thanks to Yuki's advice) they make sure to keep slightly messy (Kimi laughed at it at first until Momiji made her feel bad after he told her that Machi had gone to the bathroon & wiped off all the make up & undid the hair style so Kimi bought her some limited edition Mogeta merch, after asking for Yuki's advice, in apolgey & started referring to Machi's new hair/makeup style as "punk chic" whenever anyone tried to mock Machi about her new look)

5. her & Momiji go on a crazy tie dying adventure (much to Hatori's grumbling & Mayu's amusement)

6. Kormaki gets her into collecting second hand fridge magnets which she then later uses in her work (my version of post-serise Machi is an artist) once the magnetism finally wears off

7. Kagura teaches her how to fix up old plushies (Machi likes creating Mogeta inspired characters) & gives Machi all her old cat ones to work on (Machi descides not to ask why Yuki's cousin was seemingly once obssesd with orange cats because she looks rather embrassed & a little sad when she hands over her collection)

8. Kyo reluctantly teaches her how to cook a few simple dishes (Tohru comes over as well & Yuki insists her food is better but Machi prefers Kyo's simple style of presentation so it's eventually descided that Kyo & her will do the cooking & Tohru & Yuki will deal with the cleaning which Yuki agrees to becuse cleaning is still difficult for Machi but Kyo says it's actually because no matter how much Tohru tried to train him rat boy knows he would never be able to do anything in the kitchen but burn water)

9. Kakeru teaches her the skills of 'excessive badge & sticker decorating' as well as giving eachother fake tattoos (Kisa congratulates Hiro on not saying anything rude to Yuki's girlfriend about her appreance after they first meet her)

10. Cuts her hair short (she delibretly makes it very choppy) once she enters university, where the rules are less strict about your apprence (at least it is if your at art college), & she also regulary wears diffrent coloured wigs (her favourites being a dark red one & a rainbow one) whenever she wants to temporarily change her appearance (beacuse she didn't want to commit to just one look, still wanted to have the ability to quickly "become invisable" again & she heard from Kimi that exsseive hair die-ing could permantly destroy her hair & scalp) it takes her until she's 30 to try out shaving all her hair off (she worried she'd look sick/crazy or not feminine enough) & everyone's really surppotive (though Kimi dose cry a bit, Rin & Haru aren't there when her hair is being shaved & Kyo is a slightly confused as he'd always thought women liked having longer hair then guys) especially Ritsu (who's growing out thier hair again) & they all throw her a big party (Haru & Rin are there for the party bit just not the hair removal bit because it brought up some bad memories) where Kakeru films it & posts it (with Machi's permission) & they give her cut off hair to a charity chosen by all thier followers (despite her disbelief Machi has manged to gain a small group of loyal fans from all her art stuff & her apprences on her loved ones social media), Kakeru also later uploads a video where they help Machi rainbow dye her buzz cut, (she later explores many diffrent types of buzz cut patterns such as flowers & geometric shapes but, at Kimi's insistence, gets them done by a professional)

11. She recycles & D.Y.I's like crazy (Momiji started singing Do Re Mi from The Sound Of Music after she told him that her new dress was actually made from curtains & Yuki cried when she gave him a little rat plushie made from felt, after he came clean to her about the curse)

12. She almost never wears an apron while working on her art because she likes getting messy

13. When her & Yuki go out to eat she loves things like fondoe (both the chocolate & cheese kind), eat N mess & is genreually just a fan of finger food & it becomes a tradition between her & Yuki (& later Mutsuki) to go on a stroll through the park after thier meal & (if it's autumn) look for piles of leaves to jump in (Machi & Yuki also like playing a game where they try to look for the weirdest looking leaf to give eachother & whoever wins gets to pick what they'll eat for dinner that evening & the looser has to cook it, Mutsuki is the "impartial" judge)

14. Machi is amazing at scrapbooking & collarge making (Tohru is more of a dream journal kind of girl)

15. When it's Summer her, Yuki & Mutsuki go down to the beach to see who can find the weirdest looking rocks (the less impressive ones often get used in Machi's art work, the coolest ones Mutsuki gets to keep & any that are too perfect get tossed back in the ocean & Mutsuki likes to score the splashes they make on how big/loud they are)

16. She loves helping Yuki out with gardening for lots of reasons (it's therapeutic & she loves seeing Yuki happy) but she can't deny it's also just fun getting muddy

17. Machi, thanks to Kakeru, devolpes a love of paint ball (but instead of using guns they just throw the paint at eachother like in 10 Things I Hate About You because apparently the gun pellets actually hurt) & will bring it up as an activity idea to her loved ones any chanse she gets

18. Decorates as much of her flat (& later her home with Yuki & Mutsuki) with Mogeta merchandise, random things she collects & her own art work as a big fuck you to her bitch "you have 0 personality/hobbies or talents" of a mother

19. Kisa (happily) & Hiro (reluctantly) introduce Machi to the magic of glitter

20. Machi & Rin eventually become proper friends due to bonding over being abounded by their asshole parents & one of the things they like to do together is work on thier seprete art peices while listening to music (Machi dosn't do any of her "aggressive" art, like plate smashing, around Rin though thanks to Yuki & Haru warnings)

21. When stuff gets to be too much & none of thier other coping strategies are working (like watching Mogeta stoned- which Kisa, Tohru & Momiji do not partake in) Machi & Haru bond by going to rage rooms together to destroy shit & scream (Haru obviously dosn't want Rin around for any of that though so Momiji, Tohru, Kagura or Hana will often take the opportunity to hang out with her, one time Yuki offered & it wasn't bad but it was definitely awkward as they had never really hung out without Haru before & Haru teases her for ages afterwards about her ending up liking Yuki once she actually spent some time with him which, like the precious tsundere she is, Rin will forever deny)

22. (I actually made a whole seprete post about this ages ago but now it seems to have vanished so in case other Machi fans are unable to find it l'll add it here) on the days that it's supposed to snow but dosn't Yuki takes her (& later Mutsuki) skating so she can enjoy scratching up the perfectly smooth ice (they would have gone on double dates with Tohru & Kyo if Tohru wasn't freaked out at the idea of having blades on her shoes & Kyo hadn't claimed to "not trust" ice, he's dislike comes from all the times Kagura had forced him to ice skate with her on the lake near Kazuma's place in the winter when they were kids, so they would instead go with Haru & Momiji - they had thought about going with Haru x Rin & Kakeru x Kormaki once but he proudly revealed that he'd been banned from thier local ice rink years ago for trying "perfectly safe" Olympic level stunts in he's attempt to recreate one of he's favriote episodes of Power Rangers, much to he's fiancee's anger, & Machi reminded Yuki that though Haru & Kakeru were fine with eachother Rin isn't reall able to stand Kakeru for longer than 5 minuites)

unamed kuragi headcanons

wanted to share more of my headcanons on unamed kuragi, because i feel like machi and kakeru family dynamic is so interesting and it never gets explored in canon!

After his two failed experiments children, Machi and Kakeru’s father was a lot more stricter, tougher, and harsher toward unamed kuragi, -tethering on physical abuse- not wanting him to follow in his older siblings footsteps.

He was monitored heavily, not just from his parents, but from the maids and servants themselves. He had a private tutor so he never went to school with kids his own age, most of his life he was surrounded by his parents, servants, and his father’s company.

His parents made a deliberate choice to keep Machi out of his life. They do bring her up but only to spread nasty lies and rumors about her, so he’ll end up disliking her, and won’t want to reach out to her.

They also make it a point to compare him to Machi, who he doesn’t like, as an insult whenever he seems to be acting out of line.

“Your grades are so awful ____. Keep that up, and you’ll end up like a good for nothing like your sister! You don’t want that, do you, now?”

They also make it a point to put Machi down, to lift him up. After all confidence is a good trait for a leader.

“You’re doing so well ____! You’re nothing like that pathetic sister of yours, your just simply better!”

His ego gets stroke so much, that he can’t help but think that he IS better then her! After all, she abandoned their family legacy after trying to kill him, she was the one who’s all alone in this world, while he had an inheritance, a legacy, and a family that loves him.

On paper he’s better then her in every single capacity, and he knows that, so why does he feel so much resentment for her? He shouldn’t be so offended and insulted whenever he’s compared to someone he never met, especially not someone who’s not as accomplished as him, yet he is and that pisses him off.

He shouldn't be so ticked off at the mention of her name, while she is able to live her life freely in the outside, completely forgetting the existence of her little brother. Does she even remember that she has a brother? Surely not, cause she never seems to visit....

On the topic of brothers, he does NOT know  about Kakeru. He is completely unaware about the fact that his father is a cheating scum that had an affair with another women, and had a child with her. Mostly because having bastard child out of wedlock while you’re married, looks very bad, and his mother or father, want him to perceive the Kuragi family and legacy as only utter perfection.

Because if everything is so perfect, what reason would he have for leaving?

Unamed kuragi is actually similar to Kakeru in a lot of ways, they were both very smart and intelligent children, they both severely lack emotional intelligence, both prioritized themselves before anyone else, both were cocky assholes in their tweens (still kinda are). 

But the difference is Kakeru wanted to get better and wanted to become someone who’s more open to other people feelings and emotions, that are different then his. Whereas unamed kuragi doesn’t....

unamed kuragi had never spoken to another kid his age since he was in day care, he has 0 communication skills, doesn’t know when to stop, when he just crossed a line, cant take a hint if his life depends on it, and frankly doesn’t have the want or motivation to try and change that.

Why would he? He has a large inheritance, going to take over his father company and become the CEO, his parents, the servants, and all the other adults in his life, blow smoke up his ass all the time, when they’re not punishing him. He’s pretty spoiled rotten, so he doesn’t see the point of taking into consideration of other people’s feelings or point of view, when they should be the ones doing that to him instead

He’s been pretty much isolated from everyone, that his parents deem to be a distraction to his success, his entire life. To the point he doesn’t trust anybody or anything, not even his own parents, who have given him everything he wanted, but also taken everything from him all at once.

And though he's a grade a asshole, and trust me he knows, he genuinely does care for his family, and really believes that there's good in them.
