The songs you listen to could make or break you.

You know that classic visual of an angel and a demon sitting on your shoulders, whispering things?

That’s what lyrics are like.

You spend all day listening to depressing songs, your brain will start to believe life is hopeless.

How about this; have you heard of this experiment? If I ask you to look for yellow, your brain will start seeing yellow everywhere. Even when something’s beige or orange, your brain will register it as light yellow or deep yellow.

It’s the same with songs.

If you keep listening to artists complaining about being abused by their lover, the next time your partner is having a bad day and can’t muster a smile for you, your mind will begin to think you’re in a toxic relationship. 

Does that mean you should never listen to sad songs?

Absolutely not.

But it does mean you have to listen to them with intention. Never let your subconscious absorb them without your guidance.

To illustrate, I love looking back at my childhood, which sometimes includes listening to emo bands. I hear Simple Plan’s Welcome to My Life and think, “Thank God I survived high school with flying colors. I’ve always been so strong even then.” This way, I don’t let my subconscious think I’m a victim.

Or when I’m watching a movie and the soundtrack includes an iconic song about how the love of her life is her only reason for living, I sing along while thinking, “How lucky am I that I have countless things to live for.” This way, I can enjoy the rhythm without letting my subconscious believe I have no self respect.

But I wasn't always conscious about my song choices. Sometimes I just listen for the beat. I had been listening to Jennifer Lopez’s Dinero on repeat around the time I received a year-end bonus that’s 500% my monthly salary. I realized after the fact that my subconscious was absorbing the lyrics.

As you can see, it works both ways. As always, like attracts like.

So why not spend some time today polishing your playlist? Your future self would thank you for it.
