Summary: Zdinarsk feels a little insecure on her tats, ___ is determined to prove they are anything but something to be insecure of. “What are you staring at?” Zdinarsk chuckled and raised her brows, catching her lover with her head turned, eyes wide and examining. Seeing her yellow orbs zoom between her arms and chest Z-Dog got an idea of what was going on.

“What do your markings mean?” ___ inquired softly, never having seen tattoos like her mates’ ones before. The Metkayina’s were different, swerving in elegant shapes and lacked in colour unlike Zdinarsk’s who’s was bright and held sharp edges and strange figures.

The marine glanced at the other woman’s face, then to her own arms and then back up, blinking. She never really had to explain the meaning behind her tattoos before, usually when people saw them they just complimented her and moved on. Her tail swished at the thought of her girl actually caring.

Of course she did, ___ was a curious little thing.

‘’Uh, they don’t mean anything crazy…the one on my neck is a chimera, it means chaos and destruction’’ she started briefly, pointing to her neck and taking note of ___’s blue eyes widening and her body shuffling closer, tails intertwining. Z turned around so her back was facing her, showing off a massive eagle gripping flowers ‘’this is an Earth animal, eagle, the words at the top mean conquer or die… harsh stuff I know’’ she faced back towards the woman who brought her hands up and started tracing the tattoos on Z’s arms.

‘’And these ones? They are colourful’’

Z-Dog’s breath turned slightly shallow, feelings the small fingers going across her arms and chest. Tracing the outlines and markings. ‘’So on this arm, it has an angel, below is a devil. They are sort of religious figures…like your Eywa. It means death and rebirth’’

‘’Like how you were reborn as Metkayina’’

Grinning, the Marin agreed, flushing slightly. She still wasn’t used to being called a Na’vi, even after all this time. Apart of her thinks she would never get used to it, she was human for so long after all, but she did like the praise she always got for adapting so well. ‘’This one over here has a snake, another Earth animal, the words there mean deathless’’

‘’You did survive the ship when I saved you, without me you surely would have died’’ ___ grinned cheekily.

‘’Yea yea whatever’’ Zdinarsk stuck her tongue out, reached over and pulled the women into her lap and continued ‘’what about your tattoos? Everyone here has the same ones, what do they mean?’’

“Our tattoos hold different meaning, they are gifts from the clan and great mother. Ones on the arm mean more exposed protection of the sea wall, one across the chest and heart mean safe embrace of the central island” ___’s hands glided across the others skin, going from arm to chest to showcase where they would be placed, and also a way of saying that this is what Zdinarsk’s mean for the other Na’vi.

The recoms eyes brightened and she grinned, she never thought of her inked skin as spiritual. She kinda just did it as a young adult to feel cool, she was in the marines or God’s sake everyone had tats.

‘’I am a hunter, so I do not have a lot of chest markings’’ ___ grasped Z’s hand and brought it to her own skin, squeezing the fingers. ‘’If we have any on the face it is a hierarchy, it shows rank. Our Olo’eyktan has many tattoos, it shows he is our leader’’

‘’And how do you get them? I don’t see how you can get ink’’

‘’We get the ink from one of the many ocean animals and we tattoo ourselves when we pass Iknimaya, our right of passage…me and the clan leaders have spoken, we decided not to give you any hunters markings…but we will give you one here’’ ___ brushed her fingers onto the side of Z’s head, above her eyebrow.

Zdinarsk felt startled, she didn’t expect to get any tats at all here ‘’why?’’ Her voice was quiet and unsure.

‘’You already possess hunter marks’’ the Metkayinan ran her hands down the sides of Z’s arms and grinned ‘’but you do not have a warriors on the face’’ smooching above the brow where the soon to be tattoo will be placed.

A warriors mark huh? Z-Dog can get with that.

Redesigned Mavuika from Genshin Impacts Natlan trailer. Her name is derived from the Māori fire goddess Mahuika. I wanted to do my own take on the character after finding out that she's meant to be Māori inspired but was whiter than I am.

I kept the main colours from the trailer but I added in Māori inspired clothing and darker skin (seeing as the character is literally in a desert and definatly wouldn't be snow white) and added a few other colours to help the design a bit. I also gave her a Moko Kauae (maori chin tattoo) and a couple of pieces of pounamu to represent her culture a bit more. I might play around with the design more, but atm, I'm happy with what I've got, and I think I might mess around with the other Natlan characters, especially Olorun. They turned a Yoruba deity into a white emo wolf boy T_T

This one was hard to make. Specially the Watertribe that is based manly on the Inuk people but it physical appearance also resemble a lot other native people, like the Maori and other Native American people.

This fancast is based on appearance, ethnicity and vibes.

Korra- Devery Jacobs and Sydney Park

Devery Jacobs is a native actress who stars in Reservation Dogs, a show I haven't watched but it is on my watchlist. She is the first pick for the role, because she is native american, despite being light skinned in comparison to Korra.

The second pick is Sydney Park, I read she is mixed but I choose her based on her appearance only. I haven't seen none of them acting, but in those pictures I could see Korra in both of them.

Asami Sato - Havana Rose Liu and Kelsey Chow

I've Watched Bottoms and in the moment I saw Havana Rose Liu on screen I thought "that's Asami Sato" and, I mean, just look at her. She is gorgeous, sophisticated, charismatic, she even has those beautiful green eyes. And importantly, the acting is there.

I feel the same with Kelsey Chow, especially after watching clips of her in Yellowstone. Sure, she ain't asian or asian American (I've read that she has some native american background) but still, I think she is a good second choice even being too old for the role cuz like Devery Jacobs, who is also in her 30's, they look younger than they really are.

Mako - JJ Jr Mackenyu / Ludi Lin

I haven't watched One Piece but one look at JJ Jr Mackenyu and I saw Mako.

Same with Ludi Lin, sure he is also too old for the role but he has that "cooliness" , that "bad boy" aura that Mako has especially in book 1.

Bolin - Niko Hiraga // Kai Bradbury

I only saw Niko Hiraga in Booksmart and haven't seen any work of Kai Bradbury but look at those eyes, such sympathetic eyes man.

Tenzin - Donnie Yen / Ke Huy Quan

Ip Man himself as Tenzin is a dream and one of the most common fancasting of the character but I think Ke Huy Quan would be The Tenzin, I mean, in Everything Everywhere all at once he shows an heart and an light that justs would fit Tenzin so well

Lin Beifong - Michelle Yeoh // Ming-Na Yen

The same with Michelle Yeoh, I mean just look at her and her works. Ming-Na Yen would also be an amazing choice for Lin, if see her in clips from agents of shield and damn she seems so good in there.

Suyin Beifong - Maggie Q / Lucy Liu

Maggie Q is a baddie with such kind eyes and mother vibe (yes, I loved Nikita) that fits so well with Su. Lucy Liu brings the same as Maggie Q but with some swagger that would be fun to watch.

Amon - Meegwun Fairbrother / Adam Beach

No, Meegwun is not a white man but it is white passing just as Amon. I haven't see any of them acting, I'm going just by looks here. Adam would be the choice if they choose to make Amon look more like a Watertribe man.

Tarrlok - Tatanka Means // Matariki Whatarau

Same with Amon fancasting, Mataraki ain't native american but he is Maori(according to google) and yes, he is too young for the character and that's also why Tatanka is my first choice

Zaheer - Henry Rollins / Ron Yuan

Before y'all jump on me because I pick a white guy has first choice to play Zaheer, let's remember that he has a view of the Air Nomad culture and mentality that he considers superior even in comparison with the only Airbender master at the time, he also is a hypocrite since he let his friends destroy a millennial temple symbol and museum of the culture he said it's inspired him. This is the type of arrogance and disrespect that typically comes from a white man c'mon

I didn't know any of Ron Yuan work but just by his appearance I think he would be a good choice for Zaheer

Kuvira - Sonoya Mizuno / Natasha Liu Bourdizzo

Sonoya and Natasha , can't choose who I like best for the character, both of them has that damn penetrating powerful gaze.

Recently there been a controversy with a game called Genshin Imapct with a region called Nathan's that is inspired by Pre Colombian Latin American civilizations, some Afrcian, Hispanic, and Aboriginal Australian cultures. And just recently they revealed their characters.

Mavuika and another character named Ororon.

Mavuika (sun glasses woman) is inspired by Mahuika a Maori fire goddes who is known to have a Moko on her chin

He inspired by Olorun an Orisha from Yoruba Tradition

This is also Olorun from Smite

Some are saying it's because of the censorship in China as stated in this post.

However there are two company's that have dark skin characters in their game and they arent being censored; Riot Games who created League of Legends and Valorant and Lilith Games who have created the AFK games and Dislyte (a game inspired by mythology gods and beings)

You know something I always think about? The na'vi's reaction to finding out about how kinda similar some of earth's culture is to theirs (e.g Africans, Native Americans/Indigenous peoples) and Maori people (especially in regards to Pukana).

Same thing in regards to braided hairstyles.

Like imagine the Metkayina and Pacific islanders meeting eachother and bonding over their tattoos and pukana. also i’m not sure if pacific islanders have spirit animals like indigenous americans but if they do that would be super cool to bond over! like the Metkayina introducing their tulkuns, i know for a fact if it wasn’t the fact that it’s the skypeople, they’d definitely bond over their culture and love of nature.

And the omaticaya, since they’re already living with skypeople, i’m sure they have met their fair share of black kings and queens! like Max Patel. So just imagine them coming together to share similarities between African culture on Earth and the Na’vi culture from the forest. Especially with the hair braiding, sharing the significance of black hair styles and also the clothes! Mo’at’s are inspired by the indigenous tribe, so imagine how cool if someone from Earth were to recognise it!

I’m so excited to see the 3rd movie and how they incorporate the Ash tribe and i hope to see another new culture! Maybe indigenous american or asian?

so i haven't covered much about the election so far. thats because mainly there hasn't been anything going on. we're back to the pre covid status quo of labour applying bandaids while national aims to make everything worse. hitchen's govt has largely been meek and pedestrian because of labour's overall policy of neolib bullshit then compared to the last national govt which gave us the worst housing crisis in memory aside from covid.

the maintenance of the center left status quo. so economically its the same old struggling to keep our heads above water or being actively pushed under.

what is really worrisome is the sudden explosion of new parties. overall it represents dissatisfaction with the current system which is largely justified but being fringe groups their plans to fix the issues are honestly batshit. covid conspiracy theorists and lockdown avengers despite covid control being essentially over here.

more worrisome is the culture war bullshit largely spurned by online activism. anti maori, anti trans, anti gay, anti immigrant. anti anyone not actually causing the problems of this country. with this explosion of new parties pushing these lines if they gain any significant portion of the vote they will be courted by the larger parties even if they gain no seats in parliament. this will drag both labour and national into bigoted policies as a gift to the new parties for loyalty.

this can already be seen in the UK where trans issues have become so toxic to political careers that even the head of the labour party has said only cis women are women. we largely fought off this garbage with crusher collin's disastrous trump inspired campaign but now we've had 3 years of covid and inflation to make people pissed and wanting easy answers.

please go out and vote. voting has already happened and will continue till the 14th

I was thinking about the locked tomb today( as usual) and i was thinking about a beautiful peice of fan art I can no longer find of Wake with a Ta Moko tatto.

It gorgeous, I love it. And I will add it to this post when I find it....but I also think it's wrong....

I don't think the ta moko tradition would have survived in Blood of Eden... one or two of the original billionairs might have had Te Moko tattoos on thier faces, but Blood of Eden came from the global elite so that tradition wouldn't have enough traction....also Blood of Eden hid out among other population and super cool face tattoos would have been too much of a give away that they were other.

But I do think that the Ta Moko tradition did survive, ( though changed) in the nine houses. I fact, I think it's one of the first things we see in gideon the ninth....I think the ninth's skull masks were directly inspired by Te moko tattoos....

Here is my batshit theory*: Anastasia was in the second generation after resurection, and was Maori according to Taz muir. She probably didn't have Ta moko tattos....but her parents might have gotten them, pre-resurectio. So little Anastasia could have grown up with an odd love of bones and a very natural love of people who had elaborate face design. The context of those designs would have been lost, but the ink would remain. So when creating her own house, Anastasia might have pulled from the idea of ta moko to create the first skull makeup. This way, she took something beautiful but this no meaning that she loved, and she gave it meaning. And that tradition stayed because the ninth is isolated. And they kepted a peice of pre resurection culture alive

*Disclamer: I am a white American who can never fully understand the culture significance of these traditions....and the only reason I feel comfortable making this speculation is that im talking about a sci fi novel set 1000 years after everyone simultaneously lost thier historical context.

Just saw Avatar The Way of Water… honestly the only bad thing about this movie is the number of people saying shit about it… that movie had everything… I’m so tired of people arguing about damn dreadlocks and white saviour thrope… white colonozers are literally the bad guys? Indigenous cultures were harmfully appropriated???? what the fuck r u even sayin? This is all made up? Made up blue people and made up planet? Of course james cameron took inspiration from the horrible shit that has been done to native people, that’s like the whole point of avatar? To show us that humans are essentially giant piece of shit? Nooo let’s be actually angry with serious face that some blue aliens are played by non-indeginenous people - what culture exactly they are cosplaying that u are so angry about? I know there are similar things and lot of it is based on maori but again, ITS MADE UP!!! The whole movie I had no idea that tsahik of a water clan was fucking Kate Winslet and u know why? Cuz u cant fucking tell!!!

And it’s done beautifully, why can we just enjoy escaping to another fictional universe? I also feel like we don’t give enough credit to actors… this shit they do is like whole new level of acting, no costumes, minimum of props, they have to imagine everything and it has to be so so hard..
