From #Shinkane to #ShizuAka

This is a long post about my journey from shipping Shinkane (for a long time) but decided to move on to ShizuAka.

Yes, we all know Shinya Kogami and Akane Tsunemori do have special bond. Like mental connection with each other. Soulmates as we call it. Connected by the Red String of Fate (as we call in Japanese).

And most of the characters from PP-verse validates and knows this. Such as Masaoka and his son Ginoza for example. But there are quite a lot of evidence that made us all flap our ears whenever our favorite pair Shinya x Akane is concerned.

Some instances are:

PP Season 1:

Everyone says that it's Kou's infamous scream "Akaneee!" that proves Shinkane exists. But I do believe it was when Masaoka and Kogami shared a drink the night he left the PSB that proves Shinkane almost exist (watch EP. 18 again and know for yourself what do I mean!)

Kogami's letter. That's it. We all know it. The fact that he wrote a hand written note for her, not for Shion, not for Ginoza, not even to his mom! We all know that he value her so much.

Okay, alright... that infamous scream when he shouted for his name!

When he smiled when Akane and her team went on to Makishima's location ahead after learning of Kou's plan (thanks to Akane). He gleamed with pride.

When he didn't immediately run to catch Makishima, but instead carry Akane (bridal style) into safety when they were in a corn field. Or Oat field, I forgot. It shows how much he cared for her.

At this point I think everyone pretty much confirmed they shared a special bond.

PP - The Movie (1st)

When Kou first save her from explosion by shielding with his sexy abs 🤭

When Kou suggested her to stay with him for the night when there's clearly more room with the female locals in the Angkor Wat.

Their silent "I-know-you-care-know-I-care" treatment when Akane has to leave upto the point they were captured by Wong.

Kou wasn't surprised when Akane handed him a cigarette like he expects her to have them.

Don't forget to mention about Wong capturing them two together and plan to frame them just them. Only them. Because he sees them as threat. As if they were an item 🙄

PP - SS3

He's mad when Frederica stayed for the night and he don't know why 🤣.

He's proud of Akane's accomplishment after hearing Frede talks about the success of Div 1 as a team.

His regrets for exacting revenge and hesitations to have Tenzing follow his path mirrors Akane's ideals.

His mention of "He still have things to protect in Japan" (pay attention on that one) because in;

PP - Providence

He tries his best to reconnect with Akane but a case gets in their way.

His willingness to throw himself between her legs just to save her from an explosion almost a mile away from them compare to PP movie explosion.

His classic line "I'll follow you, even if you told me not to".

His protective nature all throughout the movie upto Akane's downfall.

His teary eyes while reading Akane's letter.

His promise to take her out of that place.

That Psycho Pass Recap during PPP promotionals which showcases the Shinkane viewpoint.

PP - S3 & FI

He don't have to pay Akane a visit nor to pick her up from jail because she's no longer his inspector! But he did anyway.

He keeps on saying he trust her and believes in her.

He didn't hurt Arata because he knows he is Akane's ward. Yes it is included.

The Merch

Yes am talking about the #KoAka keychain.

The PPP movie poster where Kou and Akane's faces are in the big picture and the rest are inside their heads!

The fan service stuff and clickbaits for all #Shinkane or #Koaka junkies!

The unforgivable hints of any romantic subplots from radio drama, merch, narrative etc.

My point is, all of them are just a setup to garner more viewership because they know Shinkane fandom is a big bunch!

But in the end, they want to tear us down by breaking our hearts with platonic inclinations between Kou and Akane 😭

The Segue:

Yes they created a segue under the guise of Frederica Hanashiro and Shizuka Homura.

We all know that PsychoPass Producers wanted to go down the path of Shonen Jump-esque plot. Which is why they seen #Shinkane fanbase as a threat. Although they don't want to shun the viewership influence of it.

That's why they create this "icings" (Shinkane sweet moment) as we call it to clickbait us! 😭😞

The Lure:

That's why in PPP Sinners of the System 3 and PPP they wanted to showcase Kogami x Frederica (the KouxFrede touching hand scene), the "Hey Akane don't blame Frederica for Saiga's death", to teach us that Kou is shippable with Frederica (a hot blonde).

Why Shinkane is a strong fan fave?

Because Akane is relatable character.

Because Kogami is a hot mess.

Akane a plain looking girl able to get the impression of Kogami a good-looking bad boy and former ace detective.

We all can easily identify with Akane. Us ordinary girls with strong principles are dreaming of a hot dude like Kogami who has ex-militia skills to swoon us over.

How the writers are tearing the #Shinkane/#KoAka fanbase:

Akane did ask (or even beg) Kogami to come back to Japan (from Season 1 especially the Psycho Pass Gekijōban, but he express no desire.

Only when Frederica, a tall-blonde-gorgeous looking half-brit half-japanese woman was able to bring him back.

They have a flirtateous moment in Sinners of the System part 3 novel during their night conversation.

The Kou x Frede indirect kiss through the bottle Scene.

Kou always standing beside Frederica.

Kou still choose to work in SAD with Frederica eventhough he has a chance to go back to PSB in PPP.

Kou's been treating Akane like trash eversince he gets back:

(1) During his famous balcony call when Akane hangs up. He didn't say sorry but instead let his pride dominate him.

(2) He only visited Akane in Season 3 after 2 years (when he rest his back at the door simply because he felt awkward bending to look at the window of Akane's height.

(3) He only picks her up out of guilt after he reads her hand-written letter.

(4) It was Shizuka Homura who negotiated Akane out of jail not Kogami.

(5) Kogami didn't comforted Akane. Only Ginoza did.

(6) Kogami had the chance to go back for Akane but he didn't. He chose to stay with Frede in S.A.D.

(7) Shinkane is one-sided. Only Akane likes him. But Ko?? No. The novels confirm that.

The Future of Shinkane:

From this point forward we can't expect anything much from this ship. Although as fans, we will keep them into our hearts and be as free as clouds to do more fanfictions out of these two characters because we've been rooting them since day 1.

But I think the writers want to us to move on with Kogami x Frederica and Shizuka x Akane.

With that, eventhough I still ship KoAka/Shinkane, I keep the possibilities open should the writers want to push them to other characters.

Those words rang in your ears. Echoing inside your head as you try to grasp the meaning behind them. Kogami, your long time boyfriend, would never tell you to leave.

“I’m sorry. Do you wanna repeat that?” You stuttered taking a step towards the man.

Scoffing, you threw your hands in the air, “Of course I make everything difficult. Just because you don’t want to put me in “danger.” I’m not a child Shinya, I can handle myself.”

Kogami was growing frustrated with each second you continued to argue. You could tell this is not what he truly wanted, but he was stubborn. He always got what he wanted wether you liked it or not. Taking a swig of water, he tosses the bottle away and turns toward the wall. Kogami has been obsessing over Makishima Shougo ever since he lost his partner months ago. He claims that he’s the reason behind everything.

You believe him to an extent. You believe that Makishima has something to do with the death of his partner and the reason Kogami is now an enforcer. However, you don’t believe he is as smart as Kogami says. No man can turn themselves into a ghost story.

“Shinya, you need to stop. Don’t you see you’re obsessing over nothing? This person may not even be involved.”

A glass bottle flew past your head, crashing against the wall behind you. As you stood there wide eyed, Kogami was heaving with anger. Never before had he ever done anything like this. The Kogami you knew and fell in love with never made any sign of aggression towards you. This was the first time he even yelled at you. Guilt began building up inside of you.

You knew how much Kogami had suffered since he had been released from the rehabilitation center. You knew how his pride hurt after being reduced to Sybil’s hunting dog; how his once friend, now sees him as nothing more than a tool. All because he can’t handle the emotions of loosing someone.

“Leave.”

Taking a step forward, you tried to reach for him, hoping he would allow you to comfort him. How could you be so stupid to let your pride come before his feelings?

“Shinya I-“

“I SAID LEAVE” he yelled angrily slamming his fist on his desk.

You lowered your hand and stood there for a moment considering your options. Knowing there was nothing more you could do, you walked out of Kogami’s room without looking back. Tears started to form in the corners of your eyes, but you wouldn’t cry here. Not out in the open where someone could see you. As you were walking towards the elevator, a door opened revealing Masaoka. He called out to you and begged you to stop, but you couldn’t. You could never come back here again.

-Present Day

It had been days since that fight. Days? Maybe it was months ago? Longer? You don’t know anymore. The concept of time has been lost. Ever since you broke the simulation and realized your four walls were nothing but a lie. The starch white walls littered with scratches were all you knew. Who caused them? Was it you? Why can’t you think straight?

There was an incident in the building you work in. Apparently some psycho tried to assault one of your coworkers. Thankfully you went out to eat for your lunch break with a couple of your friends. Arriving back at the building, you noticed MWPSB vans littered around the area. Something tugged at your heart as you felt yourself walking towards a familiar figure. The spiky black hair that never seemed to be controlled no matter how much product was applied. A line of smoke trails in front of the figure.

All the signs led to Kogami.

Walking up to the figure, you were inches away from grasping onto his jacket, when he turned around to face you. The cigarette fell out of his mouth as he stared at you. There was no emotion behind his eyes and nothing showed on his face. The line of work Kogami is involved with he had to perfect his poker face. Nothing was said between the two of you. Words failed you in this moment.

You begged your brain to form a sentence, to say anything to break the silence, but nothing came. His steel eyes bore into your soul. He wasn’t pleased you were actually in front of him. After the argument the two of you had, he was perfectly content with never seeing you again. When the call came through that there was a potential crime happening in your building, he prayed you weren’t involved. Seeing you in front of him now, he was able to breathe easily, he just couldn’t let you see it.

“Enforcer Kogami, line up.” A man with green hair spoke.

That must be Ginoza. You’ve met him a few times back when Kogami was an Inspector. Kogami kept eye contact with you for a while before turning away. He handed his dominator to the inspector and walked into the back of the loading van. He looked at you one last time before the doors closed. Your heart breaking more and more the further the van traveled.

A shorter lady with brown hair brushed passed you. Something about her felt strangely familiar. Quickly reaching out, you grabbed her sleeve, causing her to stop. Turning around to meet you face to face, you noticed her brown eyes held a variety of emotions.

“You must be Inspector Tsunemori?” You asked.

Akane nodded and began to speak but you cut her off. Smiling so wide your eyes closed to give off a soothing grin.

“Watch out for Kogami for me?”

The creak of the hinges on the old door startled you. He had come to visit you once again. His white hair flowed as he effortlessly entered the decrepit room. With a voice like honey, you had once trusted him. The villain sang the song of the Pied Piper, and like a fool you followed. A small angsty thing i wrote a few days ago.

It's been some time now since Kougami has came back to Japan, a week or two passed for sure and Kougami has gotten used to the work within the MoFA. It was quite nice, not as stressful as the MWPSB. There was only one thing which was bugged him: Teppei Sugo.

Mind you, he seemed quite the okay-ish type of Guy, Masaoka too told him about the other man's past and generally talked about the younger men. But still, it bugged Kou that he was dating /his/ Gino. The one and only Nobuchika Ginoza, who was /his first love/. He should be at Gino’s side day and night. It should be /him/ and him alone at the taller mans side. 

No One else was allowed to kiss, touch or even look at what's /his/. This rule too applied to Teppei Sugo. Why was this man kissing Gino softly? Why was Gino giggling whenever Sugo would softly stroke over his jet-black hair? Gino was /his/ why couldn’t he understand that Sugo was a good for nothing who would leave him as soon as he got the chance?

But every attempt to make Gino his, was unsuccessful. Gino would do nothing but complain that he should stop being so possessive and shove him away. All while Sugo watched and only shook his head. And, after Gino was being able to free himself of Kou’s arms, would kiss his boyfriend on the brink of his nose. 

The more he tried to take Gino away from that good-for-nothing bastard, the more vocal would the taller man be. This lead to Pops stopping him, nearly crashing him into the next wall. But even after this, Kou hasn’t had enough. He saw red. Jealousy and envy was clouding both his brain and his sight, and so it had to came.

One day, while he was in field with Gino and Pops, he punched Gino with all his strength. The sudden force of Kou’s fist made Gino collapse on the floor. He landed right on his still healing rip. Tears began to build up in the taller mans eyes. Not saying a word, not making any noise, he laid there. His cheek red and his nose bloody. 

The sudden loud noise alarmed Masaoka who rushed to his son as he saw him lying on the floor, completely under shock. Not moving an muscle, even tried to not breathe to obvious, out of fear that his best friend would hit him again and inflict more pain on him. As soon as he felt his father's arms around him, he began to cry and sob without a care in the world. The fear from before - shoved in the back of his head. 

Gino knew that he was safe in his father's arms, Kou wouldn’t dare to inflict harm on his friend when it was Masaoka who held his son tight in his arms. Who was kneeling in front of him, giving Kou an angry look. 

What Kou couldn’t see was that even if the taller man was acting all strong and just annoyed at his actions, he was a broken man. Gino cried himself to sleep each and every night. Couldn’t stop thinking about Kou’s actions towards his Boyfriend, Sugo. Couldn’t Kou accept that Sugo was the man of Gino’s dreams and his big love?

Sugo would always stay by his side, even in the darkest night he would hold Gino close in his arms, kissing his head, stroking over his back, kissing his prosthetic from shoulder to fingertips. Sugo would always listen to him, no matter how often he would repeat himself while telling him about his day. No matter if stressful or not. 

Sugo was everything to him. The little kisses all over his face, the sweet nothings he whispers into his ear. The way he strokes over his hair. The way he would hold him close and made sure he was loved and safe. In all the years with Kou, the man never once did it like Sugo did. He had only eyes for Sasayama and later on for Shion and Akane. 

After Gino calmed down from crying sobbing and shaking, Masaoka would carry him back to the car and drove him to the MoFA, one hand on Gino’s hand, softly stroking over it, telling him that things are okay now. That he doesn’t have to worry about anything. He should just focus on his health and well-being now. Nothing else matters. 

At the MoFA’s infirmary, Gino got checked thoroughly, Sugo sat right beside him softly kissing his injured boyfriend. Luckily, he hasn’t any serious injuries. A bruised rib, a sprained finger and some scratches and bruises here and there. But still, due his psyche not being in the best condition, he would be on sick leave for quite some time now.

In the evening, Gino laid in his bed, the love of his life right next to him stroking softly over his hair. Masaoka too was with his son, he sad on the edge of the bed, holding both of his sons hands with his, watching as he cried again, still trying to process what happened in field today and why his best friend, out of all people would to such a thing to him.

Gino cried and mumbled things until he eventually his tiredness took over and he finally found some peace on this godforsaken day.

(A/N): Of course, you can. I went through a lot of the Psycho-Pass media for this, and it takes a lot of inspiration from Mandatory Happiness. This is set sometime during season two. Spoilers for deaths in season one. Also, this is my first time writing for Ginoza so I'm hoping I didn't butcher this man. I hope you like this.

In one quick movement, you pull Ginoza down to you, so he is seated in a sitting position on the medical bed. Guiding his head to your chest nimble fingers glide through his smooth hair. "I won't be leaving anytime soon. I promised you that. Now, get some sleep, Gino. You clearly need it."

Deciding not to struggle, he closes his eyes as he tries to hide the blush on his cheeks. Hearing the steady beat of your heart reminded him of the promise that you made him some time ago. He felt truly at peace.

PSYCHO PASS Questionnaire

First of all, thank you @white-queen-lacus (and @whatsyourcolor) for tagging me. Sorry if I answer so late but work has been really demanding and season 3 announcement has been the last straw to my gastritis, so I’ve been out of myself for more than a week.

Anyway, this has given me the chance to read all of your interesting opinions and I must say that I share a good part of them. Soooo, here we go!

Top Three Favourite Characters:

Kougami Shinya & Tsunemori Akane (I like each one of them at the same level for different reasons, but they always come together for me)

NO ONE. If there are two people on the top, the second place is empty.

Karanomori Shion, Kagari Shusei and Sasayama (btw, Kagari and Sasayama are on the top of my “You shouldn’t have died” list, even if, Sasayamakun, I’m sorry but your death gave start to Psycho-pass so it’s unavoidable)

And here I am, breaking the rules, because the title said 3 fav characters. 3 is reductive when speaking of Psycho pass.

Five Favourite Ships (Canon or Not):

Shinkane, there’s no doubt about it. They are perfect together, in every possible way, in every possible feature, in every possible direction you look at them.

Kunikara     (Shion x Yayoi)..and same as shinkane for the reason. They are that kind of couple with different temper/physical appearance/ behavior that makes them just perfect together.

Gino X Risa. The ship that never sailed. I didn’t have the time to wink and say….hey 😉😉😉, what’s going on here? That the poor Risa was already blood spray on the floor. Dramatic!

No other couples…I’m not a shipper of non canon couples, I only ship couples     where I sense love.

If BROTP counts, I would ship Kougami x Sasayama, the best BROTP, and Gino x Sugou.

Character I find Most Attractive:

Ok, no game for anyone here. Kougami is the male most attractive character of the series, even if Gino, jealous of that title, must have ordered that new cool ponytail cut to the hairdresser. And Sugou, he is something for sure (and so sweet!!! 😆😆)

And for the girls, even if Shion is explosive and Yayoi is the ice princess, Akane is and will always be my queen. That short haircut, the slender neck that neither a swan would rival, the chocolate eyes, her beautiful face, the slim figure…in a word, the grace personified. There’s only one way we can call her: A GLAMOUROUS WOMAN. Does this recall you something???? 😉😉😉

Character I Would Marry: No comment here. I already have a wedding ring on my finger.

Character I Would Be Best Friends With: 

Akane and Kagari. Great cooking/drinking time and a lot of videogames.

A Random Thought:  All my thoughts are projected to the next year. But if we want to talk about the past….when I saw the images of the first episode in season two, the one with the bomber, seeing his blue eyes, I  thought it was Kougami come back to challenge Sibyl (and I have to admit my idea had been influenced by a fic I was reading at that time). That was obviously my inconscious-not-too-inconscious me who wanted to see Kougami again and was worried about him for all the second season. Every episode I was like…where is Kougami? Why he isn’t here? Why hasn’t he come back? Has something happened to him? Nooo, Tougane!!! Stay away from Akane (this wame while watching the gym scene. The damned authors used the same flirty music they used in season one gym scene)

An unpopular opinion:

I know that many like to ship Kou with Sasayama, but there wasn’t anything like that between them (you should read pp zero to see it), Sasayama was like a big bro to Kougami and vice, this makes them a perfect BROTP for me.

About unpopular opinions… @lefterstein like your theory very much. I take the liberty of quoting it here:

“I used to theorize about how we perceive Shinkane as not canon bc we haven’t seen them do stuff, but that for all we (don’t) know they might’ve been secretly doing stuff hahaha like I wouldn’t be too surprised if it were to be revealed that they have done stuff all along. hence my answer for the next 2 questions”

God knows if they did something or not, anyway, despite people treating Akane as a pure and innocent kid, she was WELL AWARE of Kougami’s physique, like we openly saw in the gym episode and we read in the final part of the psycho pass book, when she looks sleeping Kougami and the author indulges on his look described by Akane’s memory. I’m stills screaming inside.

A Pairing I’m Not A Fan Of: All the invented pairings, but the most illogical is Kougami x Makishima. Kougami moved earth and hell to be able to kill him and threw away ALL that he kept as precious and someone still ships them? Mm, ok….(I’m turning my head away)

A character that is screwed up: I partially share @whatsyourcolor idea that all people in PP are screwed up except Akane. Though I would say that all the inspectors and enforcers are screwed up in PP. Considering what enforcers went through before taking their place in MWPSB and the pressure the inspectors have to face to keep the enforcers at their place, resolve cases, etc. none of them is fully sane mentally. Even Akane, she hallucinates about Kou, she smokes just to keep Kou’s scent on her, she talks with the dead images of Yuki, Masaoka, Kagari and Makishima. None is safe, only the happy, unaware citizen with a healthy PP.  

Favourite Friendship: Akane and Kagari. They were so sweet to look.

You know honestly... since the second season I'm not as hyped for psycho pass than I used to be. The second season feel useless to me and for what it was worth I constantly think that it could've just stopped at the first season, even if it make Akane and Ko not meeting again technically. I don't really trust the staff anymore. We'll see what the ova have to offer but honestly... I feel melancholy when I see how I cherish this show.

Also about Mika you put out loud what I was thinking. People use the fact that she have a past trauma and all to explain her character but you know…I get her character. It’s just shit. And you think Masaoka and Kagari got replaced by that…

There’s also something else. I rooted for Akane for the whole first season. While people spit on her while fawning over Ko, i loved her way of thinking and her flaws. It probably gone with growing into knowing the system but the determinated Akane I knew faded away now. I think the only character I still like is Gino at best and the doctor too, I liked that man. We don’t see much the minor character so…

This got long, so I answered below!

I have a good friend who feels the exact same way you do about the fact the series could’ve stopped at the first season. At first, I really couldn’t quite get onboard with him, but I do understand it now after the second season and the film. The second season like you said feels disconnected and a bit useless, despite its good moments (which were exclusively those with either Akane, Gino, or both–characters we already knew and loved). It doesn’t answer any questions and doesn’t achieve the same narrative depth as the first season.

To this day, I still don’t understand why anyone uses Mika’s “trauma” in attempt to defend the character, but the bottom line is you can’t defend bad writing. Every character in the series has dealt with trauma at some point, most much worse than her. Their past and experiences all contribute to their depth and development, but Mika just stomps around like a one-dimensional child blaming everyone else for her own mistakes and wagging her bony little finger at her older, more experienced, equally traumatized co-workers. There are some who like to compare that to first season Gino, but to do so is to disregard the way his character was written. I’ve mentioned before that even in the early episodes, we caught glimpses of his human side when he complimented Akane and provided her with more information of Kogami. He had a specific beef with Masaoka (which pointed to that later getting explained) and also seemed to have the biggest conflict with himself and the situation those around him were in. We knew there was a reason he was lashing out even if we didn’t like it, and his actions had dimensions that were constantly evolving as the show went on (eventually pushing him to the breaking point).

I’ve never seen anyone criticizing Akane for fawning over Ko. Usually what I see is people who don’t like Ko x Akane from a ship perspective criticizing the people who do. Which is all well and good. To each his own. It added to the human aspect of the show, and at least in my eyes, it never once hindered Akane’s ability to do her job. Her mistakes in her line of work were largely due to other reasons and she worked to overcome them. Ko made her better: he showed her the ropes in a way that was a bit more outside their book, helped her to grow, thrive, and toughen up in a way that was still encouraging and fair. Where Gino was hard on her, Ko helped her to really thrive within her own humanity, flaws and all. He even says he admires her as well for her tenacity and clear sense of justice/moral code. The latter of which we see something graying on a bit as the series progresses without ever losing her best qualities. Some of that is Ko, some of that is experience-based, and some is just simply her being herself. 

She and Ko had an extremely strong connection and still do. She doesn’t fawn over him anymore, but they still have that draw, and one I’d argue has somehow evolved quite a bit despite him not being in the second season or really playing any role between the first season and film. It’s more mature, much more complicated, and intriguing. In the second season, I always interpreted Akane not as fawning over him, but still being locked into that draw. There’s a difference between the two, and in my mind, that was one of the more interesting aspects of season 2 even if it was handled a bit oddly. 

I can understand where you’re coming from, though. The more the staff turns toward plot and away from character, the shakier the series becomes. The second season and movie both did little to resolve still lingering issues from the first season, instead introducing us with new and frankly moronic questions that we didn’t have and didn’t need answers to. 

Of course, they didn’t provide answers to those either, which has really led the series into quite the mess.

I get the lack of trust. Let’s just hope they can get the series back on board, for the sake of Akane, Ko, and Gino if nothing else.

I love Akane, but it would be better if in next project all attention will focus on another characters, especially Gino — because in S2 he was “just a beautiful decoration”, not an important character (like in S1).

So I want more enforcer Gino.

And I think Mika must be more adult in new trilogy. Give Shimotsuki good character development, stop showing us just her worse side!
