When you transitioned, you didn’t kill off your fashion, no, quite the opposite. It had never felt quite right to be called a girl, to be considered a woman. The clothes you wore had nothing to do with it, you were sure. Still, for a little bit after your public transition, you tried to dress more “traditionally masculine”, but it was only when you started wearing dresses and skirts and anything perceived as “feminine” that you felt truly at ease.

It was also around then that you got odd looks, and more mistakes and misgendering. Most of the time it was from strangers, so you chose to ignore it. It had no real effect on you since they were strangers, and their own opinions didn’t matter to you.

In doing this, you gained confidence, not that you didn’t have any before. You were simply presenting yourself how you liked, and you didn’t give a damn about who saw you as what. This confidence is what drew Aventurine’s attention to you, he quite enjoyed your slight flair for the dramatic, how ethereal you looked in certain dresses, and all around… you. He had never really fallen for someone as hard as he fell for you.

He pampers you as is, of course. Anything you want is yours, perhaps even three times over. No time to even say ‘I want’ or ‘I would like’, it’s yours. Especially clothes. He’s a bit of a fashionista himself, after all. You see a pretty dress you like? He’s buying it, and maybe a suit to match. Even a ball gown, something a little too formal for every-day wear? Don’t worry, he’ll find a reason to wear it.

Aventurine finds you pretty handsome any day of the week, even on your worst days, your most dysphoric days, where you want to do nothing but lie down in bed, dressed only in a massive t-shirt and boxers, unable to tame your disheveled looks. Which, those days seem to be becoming more and more frequent.

It had been quite a while since you two started dating, and you yourself knew dating one of the Ten Stonehearts would put some direct attention onto you. He wasn’t necessarily a celebrity, but of course paparazzi fled to him like flies to honey. And with that, you end up in the crossfire.

You do your best to ignore it, even when pictures of you and Aventurine end up on social media, even when the posts shift from referring to you as his ‘partner’, to his ‘girlfriend’, even when the comments referred to you as his girlfriend from the start. You shouldn’t let it get to you, you tell yourself, they’re just strangers is all, and they have no real connection to you. And yet, you can’t help but keep scrolling through those comments.

Every little she, every little ‘girl’ gets to you. It cuts like knives, reopening old wounds you had forgotten about. Those words take root in your heart and you withdraw into yourself. Aventurine had been out on a… business trip, and you were left to wallow in your own dysphoric hell by yourself. Simply staring into your closet makes you feel sick, not even the clothes, but knowing that this is what you wore, and that is simply how people will perceive you from then on, his girlfriend. It hurts, dammit.

Despite the sickening pit forming in your stomach, you can't help but continue to scroll through the comments. Very few know of you, given your limited social media presence, even if Aventurine had tagged you in a couple posts of his own and even referred to you as his boyfriend. The few comments that mention you that do refer to you properly do not wash out just how many more had all sunk their fangs into the word ‘she’.

You finally pry your phone away from your eyes, turning it off and putting it face down as you bury your head into the plush pillows beneath you. You want to scream, to cry, but ultimately you are left with silence. Which turns out to be even worse, stuck with your thoughts that take hold and rip any semblance of confidence you had. Those words sink even deeper into your very bones, a reminder that you aren’t in the same leagues as a cis man, that perhaps you never will be. And then, the words ‘not a real boy’ start to rise. And slowly, that voice becomes louder, and louder, and lou–

You are interrupted by the muffled chime of a video call, raising your head and simply staring at your phone for a couple more moments. You knew exactly who was calling you, of course, he was the only one you really video called these days. And now, you didn’t even know if you wanted to pick up the phone. To you, it meant looking at yourself, seeing a girl. Doesn’t matter how little your portrait was in the corner, you’d still be there, all the same.

As if it was instinct, however, you pick up your phone and accept the call. You feel as if you immediately regret this decision, watching as your face pops up half-hidden by the sheets of your unkempt bed, finally minimizing into the corner.

“Hey handsome,” Aventurine starts, flashing you a pretty smile. He was driving, eyes on the road (thankfully), but peering at the phone every now and then. “How’s your night going, hm?”

“Good.” You mumbled, doing your best to sound at the very least okay. Your voice is muffled by the sheets and rather heavy, groggy.

“Awh, did I wake you up? I’m sorry,” He coos, still not looking at his phone, which you thank whichever Aeon you have to for that. “Just missed you is all.”

“It’s okay,” You manage to squeak out, tracing over his features mentally. He himself seemed so tired, despite how hard he played the relaxed character, you could tell that whatever meeting he had just gotten out of didn’t necessarily go all that well. “I missed you, too.”

You can see Aventurine smile, but silence fills the space between you two. The faint rumbling of the car on the road is soothing in a way, not too loud but not too quiet, enough to keep your thoughts from drifting. Perhaps you really are tired, with how easy it feels to fall asleep at the moment. Perhaps you were just tired, and that’s why such words got to you… and yet, as you did your best to surrender to sleep, Aventurine’s voice pulled you right back into reality.

“Have you been crying?” He doesn’t even tiptoe around it. It seems he had finally parked, and he finally got a good look at you. 

“Uhm–” You hadn’t even known you were crying, it seems you were so hyper-focused on just how you looked too much of a woman, and how badly you just did not want to see yourself.

“Hey, hey, what happened?” You can’t really lie to Aventurine, he’s pretty damn perceptive and it’s a little scary. Not just that, but he tends to worry about you, considering his luck doesn’t affect you. Seeing as he’s a whole star system away, he has every right to worry.

“It’s fine,” You groan, readjusting in the bed and doing what you could to hide your face while still allowing him to see some of it. You know you can’t get your way out of it, but deflect nonetheless. “Life sucks, is all.”

Aventurine purses his lips and furrows his brows, before clicking his tongue and shaking his head. He lets it go, for now. “Well, whatever it is, I’ll be home in like… three days, okay?” His voice softens from his usual sly tone.

You utter a low effort ‘mhm’, unable to conjure up any other words or sounds. You can see the worry creep into his expression, and somehow, it makes you think of a horrible, wretched question in the face of things.

“Do you see me as a girl?”

He lets out a ‘huh?’ before the question fully processes in his head. “No! Not at all! Why would you think that?” He raises his voice slightly, not panicked but as if in a rush to soothe your mind.

“I dunno. Seems like everyone else sees me as your girlfriend.” You huff, tilting your head.

“Well that’s them. You’re my boyfriend.”

“But–”

“Nuh uh. You’re my boyfriend. You’re a boy. Nothing else. Unless you wanna be my Husband?”

Aventurine’s cheeky tone returned and it caused a blush to bloom across your cheeks. You’re more surprised by the question itself, rightfully so, and it felt like it came out of left field. He chuckles at your reaction, raising his eyebrows, before shaking his head.

“What makes you think that, love?” He continues on if he hadn’t said anything, his voice softening once more.

You still once more, shaking your head. You feel as if you’ve already answered the question– you did– but, there was more than just that. “‘Cause of how I dress… do you even like it? Like... all the dresses and skirts and stuff."

“Of course I do!” He answers so quickly, placing his hand over his chest as if he was offended. “You look stunning! No matter how you dress. Is it annoying you?”

“... No.”

“Then you shouldn’t worry, okay? I love you, you know that, right?”

You nod meagerly, unable to find words. His reassurance helps a lot, but it would still take you a couple days to shake it off. For now, you would keep away from social media– especially those that were dedicated to Aventurine– to keep your head clear.

“C’mon, say it back,” Aventurine coos, “Or else I’ll start to feel a little hurt.”

“Love you too.”

“I’ll settle,” He huffs, but still his voice takes on a gentler tone once more. “Now, I’ll see you soon, okay? And I have a lot of gifts for you.”

WIth that, you two say your goodnights, and he promises you once more that he sees you as a man, regardless of how you dress or how you feel. You felt lighter, for sure, and were quite anxious and excited for Aventurine to come home. And the next days go by painfully slow, your mood dipping and rising equally, and yet, you were able to keep away from the same comments that had tanked your comfort within your body.

When Aventurine comes back home though, his arms are practically full of all sorts of boxes, jewelry boxes, and bags stuffed with Qilpoth knows how many clothes. He had to have someone help him bring his own luggage back to your apartment. He’s practically beaming, the fact that his gifts take up the entire couch was like an achievement for him. He showers you in kisses and praises and ‘I love you’s before he allows you to open his gifts.

He’s brought home almost an entire closet, pretty dresses, some rather formal, and even a ball gown, suits, as well, and a bunch of necklaces, bracelets, and rings. Many are adorned with gemstones, and most of those are aventurine stones. ‘For good luck’, he says, as if he didn’t know exactly what he was doing.

One gift, however, stands out among the rest. It isn’t big and poofy, it doesn’t shine, nor is it considered… formal. It’s a simple sundress, covered in floral designs, the material was light and airy. It’s beautiful as is, quite striking in its simplicity considering Aventurine’s fashion sense.

“It’s starting to get warm, y’know?” He shrugs, as you stare at it, running your thumb along the hem of its sleeves. “Wanted you to have something to wear, something pretty– not that the rest of your clothes aren’t pretty, but…”

As he stumbles over his words, you look at him and pull him into a kiss, one that isn’t quite heated, but rather tender and soft. When you pull away, there are practically stars in his eyes, and it seems you’ve soothed his own mind. Yet, his face is burning up, practically bright red as he looks away and clears his throat.

“Ahem… just wanted to, uh, let you know how pretty you are,” His voice shakes ever so slightly, as if a kiss was more bold than him proposing marriage. “And I wanted you to flaunt it.”

ROBT/D Headcanons

Here’s some headcanons I have for how Rapunzel, Jack, and Merida would interact with HTTYD characters (as well as some headcanons for their backstories in this world). I’m doing this specifically in Hiccup’s world because HTTYD is my favourite of the four ROBTG movies, and an AU where the other three characters are in his world would excite me the most.

Rapunzel

Backstory:

I’m thinking of something very similar to her story in Tangled, except instead of being kidnapped, she has extremely strict and often emotionally abusive parents (or one of them is – I’m inclined to say her father because some stuff from Tangled the Series made me dislike him) who kept her locked away both to protect others from using her powers but also so they can have unlimited access to it – I’m thinking to enchant items or to project the kingdom or themselves? Idk the details yet. She’s either still a princess or a powerful chieftain's daughter. Being on the run with the dragon riders may be perceived as an act of aggression on Berk’s part so...war maybe? I’m in real danger of making this AU a writing project.

I think Rapunzel would be besties with Hiccup and Fishlegs. They all have a shared sense of enthusiasm for creativity and discovery and I think she would adore taking care of dragons. (I imagine in this world, Pascal is something similar to a Terrible Terror). I also think Rapunzel would be very good friends with Heather – she would see the hurt and trauma Heather’s carrying with her and want to be there for her as much as possible. I also think Heather would be somewhat jealous of Rapunzel’s innocence and sheltered life, but also become very protective of her because of that. I see Dagur being similar and probably warming up to Rapunzel quickly the same way he did with Fishlegs after the redemption arc.

Rapunzel is initially very intimidated by Astrid, and Astrid is a little annoyed by Rapunzel because she’s well-meaning but often takes on more than she can handle or gets into trouble by mistake. Rapunzel is the least combat-oriented of all the characters, and while she’s clever enough to get out of tough situations, she feels like her lack of fighting ability makes her stand out. Eventually though, Astrid warms up to her and similarly to Heather, wants to protect her.

Rapunzel and Merida don’t get along initially. Merida thinks Rapunzel is boring, and Rapunzel thinks Merida is rude and selfish (especially when Merida complains about her mother). I see them growing closer as they get to know each other go through some adventures together. I see Rapunzel getting along super well with Snotlout, but specifically Snotlout in RTTE, because that’s when we see him lean into a lot of his creative pursuits. Snotlout initially tries hitting on Rapunzel because that’s his default behaviour when he sees an attractive girl; he is unsuccessful because Rapunzel does not know she’s being flirted with and thinks he’s just really nice. Eventually Snotlout realizes that he’s not only okay with being friends with Rapunzel, but really likes spending time doing creative things with her and feels okay being vulnerable about his insecurities and talking about issues he has with his dad.

The twins initially see Rapunzel as a fantastic new target for pranks. She is absolutely not used to this, and tries to play along and be cool with it even though the pranks either confuse or upset her. At one point, one of the pranks makes her so upset that the twins develop an unspoken rule that their pranks on Rapunzel will just be harmless surprises or spontaneously nice things. Like they’ll organize her art supplies and be like “Ha! Loki’d!” and she’ll laugh and go “Oh, you guys got me!”. As for Jack – something similar, although he probably senses from early on he doesn’t want to go too far with his pranks or jokes with her. I think their dynamic would be similar to the friendship he has with Toothiana, so he anything he’d do would probably with the goal of trying to make her laugh rather than laughing at her.

Possible romantic interests because I can’t pick just one:

- Hiccup (they would be SO CUTE together. Little nerds aghh)

- Jack (because their dynamic would be very similar to that of Rapunzel and Eugene.)

- Heather (Because Heather reminds me of Cassandra. I can *kind of see Rapunzel with Astrid too but only in a polycule with Heather tbh)

- Dagur (I’m fairly certain this is a ship no one’s ever considered but I think it would be extremely cute – for basically the same reasons I ship Dagur and Fishlegs)

- Merida (Merida develops the crush first and starts acting really strange around Rapunzel. Rapunzel is extremely confused. It’s adorable.)

Jack

Backstory:

Jack is a rogue/thief who generally stays on his own. He’s not trusted by most honest people, and he’s not cruel enough to feel comfortable travelling with more violent thieves. He mostly steals what he needs and from people who can afford to lose it. When he steals more luxurious items, he’s usually being paid by someone else – or he’s doing it to spite someone who wronged him. At some point I imagined him being imprisoned by the Outcasts for trying to steal something important from Alvin, and meeting Dagur in prison – maybe they helped each other escape and meet back up later. At some point later he meets the dragon riders...maybe after trying to steal from them? But then they become friends. OH! Or Jack was working with Dagur and the Dragon Hunters for a while (maybe they had something on him? Blackmail or pay he couldn’t resist?) before defecting to the dragon riders. I like that a lot. Does he have powers in this AU? I don’t know.

Headcanons for Jack and Rapunzel already explained in the Rapunzel section.

I’ve talked about the dynamic I envision for Jack and Hiccup in a previous post – I think Jack realizes that Hiccup is actually much more a trouble maker than Jack, because while Jack likes to play jokes that are ultimately harmless, Hiccup causes real trouble while trying to do good things. So while Hiccup’s chaos amuses Jack, sometimes he finds himself having to step in and be the voice of reason (which greatly annoys him).

Jack and Astrid have a generally friendly rivalry. Astrid doesn’t like when Jack is untrustworthy or goes off and does his own thing (because he has trouble trusting others, even when theyre on his side), and Jack doesn’t like when Astrid bosses him around. However they do team up to make fun of Snotlout, and Hiccup does a good job of mediating between them when they have more serious arguments.

Jack and Heather have a weird hot and cold relationship where they see a lot of themselves in the other person and that makes them both very concerned for their wellbeing and also really annoyed with them all the time. If one of them shows too much concern, it makes the other uncomfortable and they’re like “screw you, I’m fine.” Jack intentionally annoys the hell out of Dagur, and the only reason Dagur doesn’t pummel him is because they have a long history (which Jack will never let Dagur forget).

As previously mentioned, Jack loves teasing Snotlout. He teams up with the twins to terrorize him, although probably goes easy on him if Rapunel or Hiccup are nearby. He loves spending time with the twins but sometimes finds them too chaotic even for him and has to try and mitigate some of their decisions when things get dangerous. Jack also likes teasing Fishlegs but he’s too nice for Jack to do anything too malicious. He probably teases him for being a nerd but also shows appreciation for how smart he is. Jack and Merida either hate each other or are best friends. I think it’s a bit of both. They have a rivalry that’s not always friendly. They care deeply for each other but would never admit it out loud.

Possible romantic interests:

- Hiccup (obviously)

- Fishlegs (he loves flirting with him and making him flustered)

- Rapunzel (same as Fishlegs)

- Dagur (okay...hear me out. I ship it a lot, but not entirely in a romantic way. Like they had a fling, Dagur developed romantic feelings and Jack wanted to be friends.)

Merida

Backstory:

Very similar to her backstory in Brave, except her father’s a chieftain. I see him being a very close friend of Stoick’s, so Merida and the other dragon riders saw each other a lot as kids. Her chiefdom accepted dragons and took to dragon riding pretty soon after Berk did.

Headcanons for Jack and Rapunzel in the earlier parts.

Merida is like Hiccup’s energetic younger sister. She likes teasing him and daring him to do things he doesn’t want to do. When they were kids, her dares worked on him, but in their late teens/early adulthood, he kind of just sighs and explains why it’s a bad idea. Merida and Astrid...kind of get along? They have a lot of similar interests and enjoy training together, but they clash for a lot of the same reasons Astrid and Jack do. But the unifying factor for all three of them is of course, teasing Snotlout together. Snotlout learned from an early age that aggressively flirting with Merida is a good way to end up as target practice, so he doesn’t even try anymore. Although he does like challenging her to archery competitions (which she always wins).

Merida loves the twins. They remind her of her little brothers. She helps them prank others but she gets really annoyed if they prank her. Merida and Heather are pretty good friends – not super close, but they get along. Dagur loves hanging out with Merida. They become extra chaotic when they’re around each other and Heather has to make sure neither of them get seriously hurt or hurt someone else. Merida intimidates Fishlegs but he thinks she’s really cool. They don’t hang out super often but she likes being around him when she’s upset about something because he’s good at helping her calm down.

frank and piper are interesting counterpoint narratives to me. both of them have relatively mundane problems compared to the rest of the cast yet their parent's domains represent the heights of human passion as defined by the series, despite piper and frank both being (outwardly) dispassionate and (inwardly) mopey. the good end of these domains is love and protection (selfless), the bad end is heartbreak and bloodlust (selfish), which both of them try to resist. they both get claimed last out of their trios and had beforehand assumed that they were the children of someone else. both also experience perceived rejection from their mortal family directly before the series begins - both express anger and hurt at being "sent away". their rejection and unexpected claiming, back-to-back, results in discombobulation for them both, and feelings of humiliation brought on by both sets of parents.

they also both go through forced physical transformations by their parents to fit an ideal they don't want. all of the characters experience issues of identity and self-esteem but i think its the most pronounced with these two in the series. neither of them really knows who they are, and are pessimistic about their own capabilities. they are also counterpoints in that they feel disconnected from their own looks - both are very self-conscious people, but, based on how they're described by other characters, piper is probably the most beautiful member of the 7 and frank is probably the least. piper is frequently harassed and objectified, whereas frank is teased constantly about his looks. he neither feels as childish as his face is nor as grown as his body is, and he doesn't understand how to move through the world. both of which are common experiences throughout puberty - suddenly being treated differently on the basis of a body that's changing faster than you want or understand.

(discourse alert) i don't have a lot to add to the piper transformation discourse except that i do think its interesting that her blessing was temporary within the book and her love interest actually self-reflected on his reaction to it and realized that he should not have told her that she looked hot in that instance. rick did reverse frank's transformation five years later and i'm curious about his thought process about both writing it in the first place and in reversing it, and what feedback he received, if any. piper's transformation was a makeover whereas frank's was a puberty, which later rick walked back with "actually frank is still going through puberty". piper's was cheesy, sure, but frank's falls so flat bc that's just not how it works. its too much of a stretch. i don't even think it was in rick's og plan for frank, maybe he just watched captain america and was like "hell yeah i should do that" and flipped a coin between frank and leo, bc again frank was already initially described as physically grown in his debut book. and i can't even talk about hazel's reaction to to it bc its not real to me and i can't read suddenly. idk frank's plotline in general was too rushed in that book and he should have gotten another pov chapter set at least bc rick was trying to do too much too fast and relied on idiocy like the transformation to support it in the place of real character work when it wasn't even necessary for anything he accomplished in the book. he could've just walked around with better posture and achieved the same effect.

why didn’t vivi come to the engagement feast? wren had such a hang up on what Vivi said about her, I wanted that resolved (and I just wanted Vivi in general!!!!) wren meeting her human family off screen without a mention of how it went fuckin SUCKED. at absolutely no point was I convinced she should be staying in the house of her abusers being a ruler for people she didn’t know instead of returning to her REAL family. and she didn’t even bond w oak’s family either.

I also enjoyed the dialogue in the garden scene so much, but without wren’s pov it felt out of nowhere or even like she was using sex as self harm. she is so deeply self loathing and so convinced oak will move on for her, so her propositioning him feels like she was trying to rip off the bandaid and get him done with her faster. again, I have to assume because the last time we heard her thoughts was when she would DO that kind of thing. if she’s had this great character growth we don’t fuckin know!!!!!

I had fun but it was also such a disappointment and wren deserves better

YEAHHHH presumably it was single POV for the mystery of why Wren is acting so weird, but imo it didn't work. It was so so so painfully obvious and the plot twist didn't twist, so why not just give her the POV. As for the third person, all the Cardan POV content we ever got was also in third person, so maybe HB just doesn't want to write her male leads from first person? The self insert thing occurred to me too, but Wren is one of the least self-insert-able characters I've ever read in YA, and she too had the first person, so idk honestly. Maybe someone who has more experience with HB's novels could figure it out.

I WAS WAITING FOR VIVI THE ENTIRE TIMEEEE like out of all of Oak's family, she was the one who hurt Wren the worst. So where was she!! She lives in the human world, fine, but she was there for Oak's official heir party, so why not for his engagement??? Heather would have Never missed it in a million years. The lack of content regarding Wren connecting to either of the families was sooooooooo bleh, since we KNOW that being a part of one is incredibly important for her and she desperately wants to be accepted by both Oak's big dramatic yet loving family and her own human one. Her returning to the Court of Teeth makes no sense, she only has the worst memories of the place, and it doesn't even EXIST as a ruling body anymore.

SAME on the garden scene! Like you said, it sounded like the Wren from TSH, who used his interest (which she perceived as customary and short-term) as a way to punish herself and treat herself as someone undeserving of proper love. Okay, it's because of the Endless Hunger of her magic, but it's strange to never deal with her pretty unhealthy views of her sexuality. IF ANYTHING, in the final chapter she STILL thinks she is too much and needs too much and won't be able to function properly in a relationship, and we just,,,, never get closure,,, Oak is just like "don't worry" and she's like "ok" and that's it. Head in my hands. This was a romance focused duology and somehow Wren didn't even get her proper closure on that.

Literally my takeaway. Fun. Disappointing. Wren my baby you deserved more.

and this isn't me shitting on YA as a genre, this is me saying you expect younger people to have more black and white thinking in how they approach the world, other people, and themselves so YA tends to be much more focused on those dichotomies, on the good vs evil divides and less so on asking open-ended questions

the way people talk about media literacy you would think it's an inborn thing but that's absolutely nor the case, an innate thing is your ability to engage in a narrative and feel a story emotionally but understanding a story is a different skill, it develops over time and experience. language of media is its own language, it's centuries of a cultural code and symbols that you will learn eventually if you engage in varied forms of media but you are going to have some stupid ass takes along the way

arcane has this very fast pacing and snappy voicy dialogue that appeals to that demographic but, while it's not like so complex an average human with an adult brain won't understand it, its somewhat more complex in themes and characterisation than you would expect from that YA/NA skewing story. like that's the fun part about stories and about people, no one is that simple. the worst person you know probably has a wife that would die for them and you just cannot comprehend how the fuck that's possible. so you go and write a book about it, that's how it works

I think season 2 will make people worse because vi will be a cop </3 which yeah league has been cribge about it over the years but by now its also kind of the point of her character </3

I keep thinking about your portrayal of Lando in Impasse of Biting (and this is going to be very personal and possibly somewhat incorrect so feel free to skip it yk) and I've decided to just write my thesis on it because fuck it why not

the way you describe a scene is always just so. vivid to me. like all the details and the subtleties make it palpable, it all flows so naturally I've never had to think twice about what the scenery is or where/how the characters are physically because it just stays, and this story stuck with me with a level of detail not many have. full disclosure I did not reread the fic before writing this (to preserve sanity) so some details might be off regardless. anyways.

what immediately stands out about Lando is how alone he feels, that he's isolated on a much deeper level than just being introverted would get you. the way I think about this is basically: when you treat/perceive life as if it was happening TO you without having a say in it, in a way you're not living in the same world everyone else is. events in your life, the actions you take, maybe even the things you think or want don't feel like they're in your control, they're not really connected to you. and since you're obviously different than those around you in how you process basically everything you become painfully alone. ("fun" fact I wasn't really able to relate to basically any fictional character for a looooooong time. they had motives and reasons for their actions. I didn't feel I had anything to do with that.) it's like you're an observer of your own life, playing a passive role rather than being alive, you don't feel like a person at all sometimes (which is why I think Charles' proposition has such a grip on him. it's a promise to be seen, wanted, needed. to be a real person with a palpable effect on their surroundings, to fill out a place in the world. to be known)

the way Lando then broke free of that, stood up for himself (because he realised he deserved to and could just do that) meant, like, a lot to me. just seeing my own experience reflected back at me like that, and then seeing Lando overcoming it gave me a lot of,,, not really hope (thankfully I did already battle it out) but more like, reassurance that no matter what I would've gotten away from that mentality (eventually). that I would not have been stuck in my own mind for the rest of my life. we don't really find out in detail why Lando turned out like that, but I know why I did, and for a long time I felt like my life was taken away from me in a sense, I had to mourn that. and it took a lot out of me emotionally, and sometimes I'm still afraid I might slip back or that in some alternate universe I never made it out. seeing someone else go through something very similar and leaving that situation happy meant. more than I can describe tbh

altough Oscar's character had less of an effect on me (tbf there's not really a fair comparison to be made) there is still a lot to be said about his complete refusal to accept himself as he is, that he had to be shown that he CAN and deserves to be loved before he even considered letting himself take what he needs also resonated with me a lot. in my mind they connect through their respective superstitions of being loved (idk if that wording makes sense tbh you might have to read my mind here soz)

it also stood out to me how Lando irl was a very shy (and likely lonely) teenager, who would actually find his confidence and subsequently very lively personality later in life. which I think is less a consciously written parallel and more like a characteristic of him that's naturally adapted into a lot of rpf works (I still find it noteworthy tho). and I don't know how much you, the author, ever experienced that, but admittedly I am curious about it (and completely feel free to not answer that btw) never before in my life have I been able to talk to someone about this very specific type of loneliness and felt like they actually understood. like when I explain it logically everyone can imagine it, but I don't think you can truly get it unless you've been through it yourself, which thankfully not many have.

I'm not usually the type of person to cry reading fics no matter how deeply miserable they make me (ex: Casual by loquarocoeur. that fic ruined my life but I never truly felt like crying about it) EXCEPT for when they resonate with me on a personal level apparently because I quite literally cried myself to sleep after Impasse. like it GOT to me. I swear I said nearly this exact thing, word for word, to someone while I was planning this fic. It's the one screenshot I can't find, and I'm pulling my hair out about it, but in short: Y E S. That's exactly the brand of loneliness I wanted to describe. Because Lando's issue isn't introversion, it's not that he can't put himself out there and be loud if he wants to, it's more so that any time he tried to in the past, it didn't... work. It was like everyone was operating on different assumptions than him, or getting different signals. And that repeated experience beat him down to the Lando we see in the fic.

It reminds me of this comment I made:

You get it! You get it!!!!!!!! I was also thinking about why Lando would stay with Charles despite it not really getting better. Like, yes, the urge to be seen and wanted and needed would get him in his grip, but why would Lando stay? And I realized it all came back to the idea of apathy as a misrepresentation for acceptance:

for a long time I felt like my life was taken away from me in a sense, I had to mourn that.

First of all, I'm really really glad that you've gotten yourself to a better place in your life -- and I'm glad that reading this helped you feel seen and understood in your journey. This specific wording really resonated with the way I tried to show Lando's relationship to his lot in life; I wanted him to be angry because I wanted him to be grieving. I wanted him to be mad at himself for letting himself get to this point, and I wanted him to feel that ambiguous, hard-to-pinpoint anger that comes with mourning.

Him being mad at himself felt really key to his character development, because it exemplifies him taking control of his own life. By getting mad, by being ignited from the inside, we see that he realizes it was, to an extent, always in his control -- and he chose to let himself watch life happen. Obviously the reality may not have been that simple, but the mentality switch felt really vital to me.

I totally may be misunderstanding you here (sorry!), but I definitely see what you mean here -- and I agree! The fact that they both have equal but opposite... hang ups about love and life is part of what brings them together. Lando believes he's only good for giving and resents that, Oscar believes he's only designed to take, and he would rather die than give in to it. What I really loved about the resolution to this dynamic though, is that they didn't actually change -- Lando still gives, and Oscar still takes. But it's the connotation, the feeling behind the behavior, that shifts. They didn't have to change who they were, intrinsically, to find love that leaves them feeling safe.

I don't know how much you, the author, ever experienced that, but admittedly I am curious about it

Hmmmmm I'm honestly not sure that I've felt this exact brand of loneliness before, but I used to frequently grapple with like... the fear that I was living life correctly, especially when I was younger. I lived a very straight and narrow life in high school, I didn't party in college, I didn't have my first partner until I was 23, etc etc. A lot of the milestones that felt really normal to my peers just... didn't happen to me.

It's all tied pretty intricately to my asexuality, I've realized, but I described my relationship to a lot of the world as feeling like a doll, or maybe a large scale art piece. I was admired a lot, aesthetically, but I didn't really exist in the same way that a lot of "women" (ish) did.

As I've gotten older, I've realized that I've somewhat parted with fanfiction. I still indulge here and there and still enjoy writing and the practice of it, of course, but overall, I feel as though I'm searching for a piece of my younger self when I do. I often catch myself reading fanfics for more nostalgic purposes rather than to simply enjoy the piece and of course there are my favorites in which I do truly enjoy the work itself and the image that's created for myself but overall, it's not often I do. In no way is this a parting message from my account, but it's at the same time just a reflection I'm producing based on my own observation of myself from this past year. I love to write and write, I will. but I've found that my writing isn't always something that should be shared with the whole world per se. I don't like people telling me what I can and can't write about. I want to challenge myself to produce meaningful and real characters and to adopt the personality of those whom I want to write about. I want to write intriguing things that are controversial (not in a bad way) but in one that makes people think or makes people reflect on my other work pieces in regard to my succeeding in approaching a different work separate from another one or maybe even have feedback on how the writing came across/if I embodied the character correctly. I just feel as though I can't do that on here often so I've sort of ventured away from producing fanfiction and writing in general. I don't want to be put under a microscope because I want to write about a specific thing/tv show/artist. I just want to write and perceive. OKAY! be forewarned these aren't super collected/eloquent 😓 it's an adaptation of a twitter thread i made a month ago (which i'll add at the end bc. it's basically just a tl;dr of this post). but hopefully it summarizes my thoughts well

Its not exactly about them being in a relationship (even though i ship them, that's just for fun) but their dynamic could have been really interesting if all stars wasn't Like That and td wasn't a deeply misogynistic show in general but ANYWAYS. I think that they're kind of like 2 sides of the same coin. They each think the other could be nothing like them bc of their different presentations (meaning heather being feminine and jo being gnc/masculine) and that's kind of due to each of their experiences with misogyny (internalized or from other people) causing them to hold disdain for the other based on that. but at their core they are very similar people and especially on a show like td their attitudes and personality act alike.

Ive already talked about jo and how her growing up being treated with misogyny causes her to act the way she does (it's here it's REALLY long but yeah) but i haven't talked about heather yet and i think its a really interesting aspect of her character. idk if the character bios are really accepted as "canon" and maybe they did reference this in the show but i don't remember which sucks. but if she was super unpopular/got bullied in the past and she gets mistreated at home too (by her brother) it would make sense that she develops an attitude similar to jo, where she doesn't care about other people (at least that she shows) and only protects her own interests. also that she acts really mean and "cutthroat", because she's used to being treated like that herself and kind of develops a mask where she mimicks that just so she can protect herself. In my mind it also kind of ties into how she hides a lot of her interests (obviously Saw is the most obvious one but in world tour she also mentions how she has a glitter glue collection And she seems genuinely really passionate about it! and she starts talking about it but then she gets embarrassed and tells the other contestants not to judge her) because they compromise not only her mask of being perfect and unable to be affected by things/unfeeling or whatever idk how to word it. but also what she perceives as being the perfect example of femininity. she was bullied in the past for her looks (probably in a misogynistic way bc she didn't fit a standard of what girls are "supposed to" look like) she internalizes that misogyny used against her and it contributes even further to her attitude of not letting her care about anything. because yes she is selfish but her only real interest is getting further in the competition. she says it herself she doesn't like being mean and pretending to be someone she's not makes her exhausted

and that turned into more about heather than joeather but that's why i think they would be interesting. they both have such different interests and that leads them to having much different experiences with misogyny that makes them not like the other bc they represent something they dislike about women. but they're so similar and no matter their different backgrounds they both end up in the same place on td in a way. idk if that makes sense but. and here's the twitter thread in question

I hope I am conveying this ok! I mean I feel like the way you draw connections between various media and like depictions of girlhood and fraught connections between girls in media is really interesting!!!

OH LMAO thank you!!! i take some issue with the way twitter and tumblr and tiktok try to present "girlhood" as this unifying thing every woman on earth can relate to, as if every single woman (or woman adjacent, given that i personally do not identify as such but that is how i was raised and how i am perceived. but i digress!) have had the exact same experiences across the board. and a lot of it results in tenuous links between various characters in media who have nothing in common except...being women. maybe sharing a genre.

and it's funny to me, because the same links can be made between just about any character if you try hard enough, and the idea of writing off middle aged men as teen girl coded is entertaining. i don't think there's enough there to ever explore it outside of joke posts, but also if there's one truth i know, it's that peter strahm is betty cooper coded. but betty cooper is not necessarily peter strahm coded. SHE is the blueprint and he is the copy, and she actually outsmarted the killer who had a psychosexual obsession with her, so.

and maybe that is making a mockery of quote unquote girlhood but also the idea of ""girlhood"" as presented on tumblr is so empty and hollow and reinforces gender roles and acts like a universal concept when it really isn't.

like. jason blossom fulfils the role of laura palmer and lawrence gordon is a quinn fabray kinnie and eduardo from the social network would relate to the melodrama alsbum. does any of this fucking mean anything? not necesarily! but neither do "womanhood is [specific experience of the op who doesn't realise not everyone lives in suburban ohio]" posts.

honestly ben is a chill nice dude, but he's also a little weirdo. he's way too used to being a ghost.

it definitely makes unintentionally awkward social situations for him. like ben will just stop and blatantly listen to other people's conversations, and give his input when eavesdropping forgetting that other people can hear him

can absolutely be a sarcastic little shit.

has tentacles he can summon for combat but he's not really fond of them and he definitely has some bad memories associated with them

living with his mom and some of his family as he gets settled

potential plots:

shelby/lucy: doesn't make sense, compels me. i have no idea why i latched onto them as a couple bc they hardly interact one on one (other than shelby technically being the one who introduced her to the others?) and realistically shelby/laura or lucy/laura makes more sense if we're talking abt ships that have any kind of foundation in canon. However this is maybe exactly WHY it compels me. i think they have a lot in common tbh (difficult family relationships, attempted concealed identities). and while i find shelby super shippable with every core four member i can never really see any of those relationships working out in the long run for her (shelby/laura i always see as one sided/laura choosing otto, shelby/otto is a short lived teenage fling that has tons of chemistry but is also super tosxic for them both, and bloodline epilogue kind of confirmed my 'shelby and wing go on a 'break' post graduation and just never get back together' headcanon), whereas with lucy i think i can? like they have a good enough balance of similarities and differences (whereas shelby/otto are too similar and shelby/wing are too different for me). idk obviously in canon it could never work because lucy fucking DIED but it's fun to imagine aus where she didn't!

anastasia/nero: makes sense kinda, compels me. im so sorry mark walden i say this w all the love and respect in the world you CANNOT tell me you wrote those books not intending us to believe anastasia and nero hatefucked nasty. the whole bucharest thing is so deliciously vague like...idk what else couldve gone on. my more 'fun' nerostasia headcanons (eg that anastasia and elena were the twins, that anastasia/nero had some overlap with elena/nero) are definitely way out of the realm of canon though so i think i can't say it fully makes sense. anyway yes it compels the hell out of me they are my ants in a lab!!! i think i don't enjoy them on their own so much as i enjoy them as part of the rich tapestry of Fucked Up Furan Dynamics like the two are inextricable for me. but anyway yeah i think one of my fave fics ive ever written was that bucharest nerostasia fic. they really get my brain goin

elena/nero: makes sense, doesn't really compel me. makes sense because the whole romeo and juliet thing and also in the wider fanon saga of nero vs the furans it is objectively funny and very in character for nero to turn around and make his nemeses' baby sister into a teen mom. however while i am incredibly compelled by nero and the furans as a family, and am SUPER SUPER obsessed w elena on her own, them together specifically is not something i'm super interested in. elena is so so fascinating to me and always has been, but not because of her relationship w nero. i think it's fun to reflect on how nero perceives and elevates elena after her death, and it's fun to talk abt the consequences of their relationship, but the actual relationship itself devoid of any of the furan Drama? eh. just not something that particularly inspires me i don't think

raven/verity: makes sense, UNFORTUNATELY DOESNT COMPEL ME. to be clear when i say makes sense i mean in a hatefuck-y way. they were definitely homoerotically obsessed with each other even before raven murdered verity's sister. i wish wish WISH this was something that got my brain chugging because on paper it ticks all my boxes (messy hatesex, lesbians, assassins) but in practice it's just never been something i've gone 'wow i need to write/think abt this'. DONT GET ME WRONG I LOVE READING IT HINT HINT but i dont think i'll ever write for it
