it would be funny as fuck if the yelena/john/ava/bob teamup actually got away from valentina without bob getting shot. events proceed like normal. they meet up with alexei, who is even happier to see that yelena has made not two but THREE new friends. bucky still flips the limo.

of course, when he's interrogating them, he wants to know who bob is. "bob? bob is just a guy we found." "yeah. that's bob." "bob was in the basement." bucky is tearing his hair out. wtf are they hiding.

(they're not hiding anything. bob is literally just this random guy they dragged with them on their escape.)

bucky might actually succeed in dragging them to the impeachment hearing as evidence. congressman barnes gets up to speak. "evidence of valentina's crimes: she hired this assortment of assassins and spies and mercenaries. ex-captain america turned mercenary, john walker. ex-shield spy, ghost. ex-black widow, yelena belova. former soviet super soldier, red guardian."

Thunderbolts as Text Posts Part 1

Thunderbolts* was great. Easily the best film of MCU Phase 5.

Yet there was one thing that would’ve made the movie so much better. It felt so obvious that I was waiting for it to happen… and it didn’t.

When they all were inside the Void towards the end, before the two Bobs had their confrontation, the whole group should’ve walked through each of their worst individual memories. Not just Bob’s and Yelena’s, but also Bucky’s, Alexei’s, Ava’s, AND John’s. Then in the process, the subject of whichever memory they’re passing through is helped by the others as they fight their way out of the memory together, overcoming their demons.

This would’ve allowed them to get a vivid look at each others’ pasts, and go through the ultimate trauma bonding experience. So by the end, they all would have an even more profound sense of what each of them has really been through.

Then the group hug would’ve felt way more earned, because they would’ve had an actual bonding experience rather than individual experiences prior to a last-minute acknowledgment of “ok right we’re all broken.” There wasn’t enough bonding.

Alright, one criticism I have for Thunderbolts is that I don’t necessarily buy Ava being a member of the team. In the beginning, it made sense that she stuck by the team since they were all on the run from Val. However, after the Void situation was resolved, there was really no reason for her to stick around. Everyone else deciding to be part of the New Avengers made sense:

1) It was alluded in the beginning that Yelena wanted to be in a more public, superhero-type role. Even then, you can argue that Yelena decided to play the role of the superhero since that gives her power over Val.

2) Alexei is a clout-chaser, of course he’s gonna agree to be on the team.

3) Bucky was already an Avenger. He also clearly didn’t enjoy being a congressman.

4) John Walker would probably see the New Avengers as a way of redeeming himself.

5) Bob is gonna stick by Yelena wherever she goes.

And then there’s Ava, who decides to stay because…yeah. I guess she started to like being with the team? If that’s the case, the justification was really underdeveloped. In fact, that’s my main issue with how Ava was written. She’s the least developed Thunderbolt member, so her character becoming a New Avenger doesn’t feel as earned.

Still an amazing movie, but not perfect.
