Megamind Sequel, animation, and the apparently-forgotten era of CGI shows
Alright guys, buckle up, it’s time to talk about Megamind and the sequel/show!
Let’s start with the basics: two new additions to the Megamind world are coming out: a tv show called “Megamind Rules!”, and a sequel movie, Megamind Vs the Doom Syndicate. Obviously, the first thing everyone noticed was the animation quality lacking in comparison to the first movie. Then, people quickly reacted either agreeing or complaining that people were complaining, etc.
Yes. The animation is not as good as the movie, or as good as what people have come to expect from CGI nowadays. This is NOT the fault of the animators, obviously!
But I think we can all temper our reactions by remembering a few key points!
This sequel is not the grand ‘Megamind 2’ people have been dreaming of. Will Ferrell is not voicing Megamind and the animation looks funky, I know. Therefore, we can’t think of this as a movie going to theaters, but a sort of direct-to-tv/direct-to-dvd sequel. Think Cinderella 2, Ice Age Buck Wild, Aladdin 2: The Return of Jafar, etc!
To put the expectations of the Megamind 2 of our dreams on this movie and series is unfair to it. This is the equivalent of a direct-to-DVD disney sequel that you didn’t hear about until I years later and were like ‘wait, there’s a Tarzan 2???’ in the middle of a drug store (that was a shocking day.) Enjoy it for what it is!!
2. The modern CGI animation consumer has been spoiled rotten. Yes, that includes lots of animation enthusiasts! Back in the day, particularly in the 2010s, ‘poorly’ animated TV shows based on a popular movie were pretty common, ESPECIALLY for dreamworks! Meet some of the examples:
Kung-Fu Panda, Legends of Awesomeness
Tumblr media
Aliens Versus Monsters
Tumblr media
Penguins of Madagascar
Tumblr media
This is NOT a knock on those shows, especially on their quality. Personally, I think Penguins of Madagascar had great animation quality, especially in the later seasons. CGI animation for television is a different beast and doesn’t have the same budget as a movie. (Also, Penguins Of Madagascar show was fantastic, 10/10, no notes, INCREDIBLE music changed lives etc etc.)
Nowadays, CGI animated shows have animation quality comparable to movies, including some Dreamworks ones, such as Kung Fu Panda show Paws of Destiny, or Cars on the Road, the really fun cars short series!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. The good points!! There is a lot to like about this! The Doom Syndicate is actually pretty cool, as they were first mentioned in I believe the art book, a video game, and an original draft of a sequel film (don’t quote me on that)
Not only that, but ROXANNE IS STILL THERE!! This may seem small, but it’s been common in the past for female love interests to be thrown away and replaced, often because a voice actress couldn’t come back (that’s part of why I loved Puss in Boots 2 so much: Kitty Softpaws had her same voice actress and was still an integral part of the plot just like the first movie) Roxanne still being part of the cast and still being with Megamind is not something to take for granted.
4. Is it disappointing that the long-awaited sequel isn’t a full-blown theatrical release? Yes. Is it disappointing that the voices aren’t returning? Also yes. However…
TL;DR - Megamind 2 and the show should be taken for what they are: a 2010s style tv series and a direct to dvd sequel respectively, this is NOT the fault of any animator, and is not necessarily indicative of quality of writing. Enjoy it for what it is!

In honor of the new Megamind trailer dropping, can y'all help me find the original video for this gif? I made the gif years ago because I was deep in a bizarre obsession with Megamind and found a video of Megamind being shot and killed, which I haven't been able to find since.

Megamind and Zim
So, I'm a huge nerd (as you all know). And I've recently gotten a bit back into Invader Zim because my hyperfixations are a neverending cycle of whatever happens to capture my interest.
Well, since my brain likes to make connections between hyperfixations, I decided to start listing out similarities between one of my most precious blorbos - Megamind - and Zim. Just for funsies. :P
And uh, there's A LOT, actually. Which shouldn't surprise me considering they're both Very Dramatic aliens, but either way. I'm gonna post what I've gathered here for my own amusement. 😁
Tumblr media
So here's what I got:
Aliens
Landed on Earth
Grew up parentless
Outcasts of society
Robotic servants/minions that were given to them prior to being sent to Earth (yes, Minion is a fish, but he does have a robotic body)
Black heeled boots and black gloves
Viewed as "evil" even tho neither are actually evil (Zim is self-centered, chaotic, and destructive but I wouldn't classify him as evil even if he himself might - his mission to conquer Earth is more to please his Tallest and be validated as a good invader than to actually be evil for the sake of being evil)
Have strong relationships with their rivals/enemies to the point where they give their lives meaning and purpose - both became depressed and unmotivated when those enemies were suddenly not around to fight (due to being "defeated" in Megs' case and pursuing "real science" in Zim's case in the unfinished ep Mopiness of Doom)
Both are frequently shipped with their enemies in fanworks (Metro Man for Megs, Dib for Zim)
Intelligent scientists and inventors but they're also goofy as hell and they create plans that continually fail
Speech idiosyncrasies (pronouncing words incorrectly for Megs, emphasizing certain words and poor volume control for Zim)
Very animated and dramatic/theatrical when speaking
Short (Zim more so than Megs but Megs is still, like, shorter than Roxanne)
Big egos that hide their severe insecurities
Significant amounts of angst to both character's backstories
Cool color skin tones
Bullied in school
Affinity for junk food
Many fans of their respective media are in the lgbtqia+ community - both characters themselves also read as some flavor of queer and fans often HC/interpret them as such
Both come across as some level of neurodivergent
Pretty neat, huh? Well, I took it a step further (bc of course I did) and decided to ALSO find as many similarities as I could between Roxanne Ritchi and Dib Membrane. Being the main human characters, it felt more appropriate than trying to compare Metro Man to Dib, even tho Metro Man largely fills the "enemy" role for Megamind (and bc I am a filthy shipper at heart, fight me*).
Anyway, so Roxanne and Dib:
Tumblr media
Human (potentially questionable in Dib's case, but still)
Foils and equals to the alien protagonists
Intelligent
Sneak into alien protagonists' bases to take pictures and figure out "evil" plans to try to stop them
Have been kidnapped by aliens
Know the real truth of the alien protagonists, but their peers don't (Roxanne knows Megamind isn't really evil or dangerous, Dib knows Zim is really an alien - in Megamind's case, the people of Metro City do eventually come around, but not til the end)
Have false narratives about some aspect of their lives widely believed by the general public (most the citizens of Metro City think that Roxanne is dating Metro Man, almost everyone around Dib believes he's just crazy for thinking Zim is an alien)
Have companions who are also privy to the alien protagonists' true natures, but those companions are apathetic (Metro Man and Gaz respectively)
Concerned for the well-being of their fellow humans and cities
Like their aliens, both also come across as some level of neurodivergent (you kinda have to squint to notice it in Roxanne, but it's definitely there)
Alien boyfriends* (if you ship Megarox and ZaDr :P)
So yeah! Just some fun comparisons to ponder.
*Although I don't ship ZaDr within the canon universe of the show itself, I do enjoy it in certain transformative contexts. I'm v aware of the controversial nature of the pairing, so I wanna make that clear. I just like having fun with it.

I see a lot of of awesome Megamind fanart that I'd LOVE to reblog...
and then I see negativity about Megamind Rules and Megamind vs. The Doom Syndicate. I want to engage and share the work, but I can't encourage that kind of negativity. >:/
"There is no Megamind 2! >:<" You're right, DINGUS, because it's never been CALLED Megamind 2! All the haters call it Megamind 2!!
Also, you're not the targeted audience! Let people enjoy things! I guarantee your life would be much happier if you engaged in things you enjoyed instead of ripping on things you hate all the time.

MY AU IDEA: Megamind and the Devil of Metro City
Tumblr media
Summary: "Well, you know the story of Megamind, a blue alien baby who, as soon as his planet exploded, was sent to Earth and he grew up from childhood in a prison and became a supervillain who, after several crimes, kidnappings, robberies, a faked death of his mortal enemy, the creation of a hero and a question about his life he became the city's defender and had his heart stolen by a reporter".
Tumblr media
But in this universe things changed a little because the adoptive father of megamind James Harley, the Warden of Metro City Prison for the Criminally Gifted, adopted a boy, but not just any boy, he was a blind boy who came from Hell's Kitchen who had his father killed and his father was a famous boxer in Hell's Kitchen who fought to support his son but his pride led to his end and last battle so Matt was a little sad but optimistic as it meant a new beginning and Megamind and Minion will discover that his brother blind adoptive has a secret, a gift, a power, an ability and it will change their lives forever.
"Matt and Megamind became best friends/inseparable brothers because it was Matt, him and Minion against a world because weirdos should stay together and take care of each other, Warden took care of his children and they were everything to him."
"Well Matt defended Megamind from everything, including Wayne Scott (Metroman) the boy also had powers and was like them however admired and sometimes a cruel idiot but Matt gained respect when he took the blame for him and said noble things because he judged character and he had a lawyer in his spirit (also the devil inside him)"
"Wayne and Matt became good friends and Matt still had feelings about it because he didn't like the way he treated his brother and soon Matt made friends and helped Megamind make them and among them were Jessica, Luke, Claire, Karen, Frank, Danny and Foggy."
"These were their friends, family and future team".
"Megamind even became a supervillain and has his friends and family thinking this is completely normal"
Because Megamind won't admit it because he became a villain because it served to fill the pain of when Matt had to go to Columbia with his second brother and best friend Foggy (as Anna and James share the adoption of Matt and Megamind) and Megamind was affected a lot with that because his brother abandoned him just like Wayne/Metroman said (it happened and Matt never knew) years later Nelson and Murdock Attonerys in Law begins and at the beginning Megamind disguised in a human form comes to see his family and also needs help and a lawyer

I saw the trailer for Megamind 2 movie, and I was extremely underwhelmed with the character designs. So, I took it upon myself to redesign the characters. (More coming soon, I promise.)
There's some ideas I am throwing out as far as this redesign goes:
- her eyes glow when using her powers, sparking with electricity.
- her hair is white when she's not using her powers (like Storm from the x-men, tee hee)
- her headband is either the source of powers or helps her control them (maybe both?)
- her hair changes into her stormy-like hair when she's feeling emotional, mainly focusing on emotions like anger or sadness.
- focused solely on bad weather and natural disasters rather than just weather in general, removing the need for bright or sunny colors.
If anyone would like to expand or adapt on the character design, be my guest!
