The Brave and the Bold (vol. 1) #30 (July, 1960). Cover by Mike Sekowsky and Murphy Anderson.
This was the Justice League of America's third appearance, and also its last headlining B & B. The JLA would appear again in its own self-titled book a few months later.
This issue also marks the first appearance of long-time JLA foes Professor Ivo and the android Amazo.

BHOC: JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #162
It was at around this time that JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA had begun to feel tired to me. It had once been a favorite series, but in recent months, coupled with a growing interest in the Marvel style of storytelling, the venerable JLA had seemingly been slowing down, becoming a bit trite and simplistic and, well, dull. I had no way of knowing, of course, that we were in the final months of Julie…

August 1967. The Golden Age Robin, now an adult, joins the Justice Society, but what on earth is he wearing?
Tumblr media
We can only criticize Dick's fashion sense so much when he's standing next to a man with the words "FAIR PLAY" on his tunic, but the costume differs from the one on the cover more than you'd expect from their being drawn by different artists (the cover is by Carmine Infantino and Murphy Anderson, the interior art by Mike Sekowsky and Sid Greene). In particular, the chest emblems are different. This kind of discrepancy wasn't uncommon with new or one-off characters — cover art wasn't necessarily done by the same people or at the same time as interior art — but it's a little weird here.

Note that the Earth-2 Batman is described as being "in semi-retirement." The Golden Age Batman had actually already appeared briefly by this time in DETECTIVE COMICS #347, albeit in an "imaginary" coda to the Batman story in that issue. As yet, there's no indication of Batman being married with a daughter; Helena Wayne wasn't created until 1976.

Look at that. This is just not an attractive costume. I know people like to make fun of the trunks-over-tights thing, but the tunic-over-tights look is not an improvement! It would be less awful if it were more like the cover, which is at least defensible as an obvious variation of Batman's costume. Indeed, that's the way artist Dick Dillin went in Robin's subsequent appearance in JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #92 four years later:

The red, green, and yellow costume most strongly associated with the Earth-2 Robin, designed by Neal Adams, was actually introduced in the second part of the above story in JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #92, although it's actually worn by Earth-1's Robin. The Earth-2 Robin adopted it in 1976, allowing the fashion police to finally stand down.
