#minimalist challenge

Its been a while. I had to be intentional and put “declutter 18 things” on my To-Do list, and that’s what I did!! 18 things down!

I seriously can believe how much progress I’ve made.. But at the same time I started to feel overwhelmed and guilty about the fact that I accumulated so many things. I started to think to myself - I need to stop buying junk, and I can’t keep making impulse buys..

I decluttered my books today and while I was going through them I sat down and read through one of them and came across a part of a chapter that spoke about setting goals as a positive statement.

Instead of saying “I must to stop filling my space with junk”

I should say “I want to make more meaningful purchases”

Instead of saying: “l need to stop leaving my room a mess”

I should say: “I enjoy keeping my room welcoming, neat and organized”

You’re more likely to achieve goals this way because you’re getting what you want vs. restricting and limiting yourself.

It honestly boosted my mood when I began feeling down about all that I’ve accumulated. Made me realize that through my actions I was working towards a life that I want for myself and that setting goals that make me feel guilt is pointless.

7 ways to reduce your screen time...

If you create content for a living, schedule your posts in one sitting so you don't have to spend as much time putting them out throughout the day.

Turn on your phone's grayscale setting — this overrides our natural inclination to click on the brightly colored app icons of addictive socials like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and more.

Use a minimalist phone app. This removes icons altogether, and forces you to intentionally look for what you need from a list of apps as opposed to mindlessly clicking. I'm currently using an app called Oasis Launcher from the Google Play Store.

Turn off notifications from social media, so you are only prompted to spend time on those apps through your own natural inclination.

Oftentimes we reach for our phones because our hands are idle, not because we actually want to spend the time on them — find something to keep your hands busy. For me this is crochet, but it could be a book, a painting, or some other kind of project.

If you find that you spend a lot of time on certain social media apps, try uninstalling the app itself, and only using that form of media through your phone browser. I used to spend a lot of time window shopping on Amazon, and the added inconvenience of not having it available in one click has really helped deter me from spending so much time on it — now I only jump on and use it when I truly need to order something for the household.

Reevaluate your screen time at the end of every week. Many phones have a "digital well-being" feature now that allows you to set time limits on apps, and see how your screen time compares to previous weeks. This can be a great way to evaluate where you need to trim down your usage.

As the wedding party was in full swing, Nicholas approached Isabeau and asked her to dance.

"Thank you, Sir Nicholas, but no."

Crestfallen, Nicholas nodded and began to turn away.

"But I would like to speak with you," Isabeau quickly added.

"Indeed, my Lady? We may speak about anything you desire."

Isabeau couldn't help but laugh a little at his boyish excitement to talk to her.

"I've been working on an art collection of my own," Isabeau explained. "It is quite different to anything I have seen done before, and as I am no painter, I would greatly appreciate your insights on the quality of the work."

"I would be honoured, my Lady."

Isabeau indicated for Nicholas to follow her. She took him to the top of a tower in the castle which she had had repurposed as an observatory. She showed Nicholas the telescope, explaining what it did and allowing him to gaze through the lens.

"Mon Dieu - c'est magnifique," Nicholas said, his voice as breathless and amazed as Isabeau's had been. His response made her laugh again - whenever he returned to his native French, she knew it meant he was especially excited.

"The science is quite ground-breaking, but its challenge is that it is only accessible to a select few who possess a telescope and understand how to use it. At present, that is fewer than twenty people in the entire world. It seems a travesty that such beauty be so rarely seen," said Isabeau.

"I quite agree," nodded Nicholas.

"My thought was that the answer lie in a melding of the worlds of art and science: what science can find, art can recreate. That led me to produce these," Isabeau explained, pointing to a wall behind them.

Nicholas approached the works, studying each one carefully. His silence unnerved Isabeau so she explained more,

"I know I am no painter, but I think there is potential here. If scientists could train true artists, like you, to use the telescope, then perhaps -"

"You are a true artist," interrupted Nicholas, his voice feeling far-off and distant, as if the pictures had taken him to another world. "These are..." he turned to look at her, "...incroyable."

From seemingly nowhere, Isabeau began to cry.

"My Lady, I am so sorry. What did I say?" asked Nicholas, rushing to comfort her.

It took some time for Isabeau to be able to speak.

"It's just... Ever since I learned about the telescope, all I have wanted is to tell you about it and share everything I've been doing with you. For every minute I have dedicated to my work, a minute has been dedicated to wondering what you think and how you would love all of this and..."

Isabeau broke down crying again and Nicholas hugged her tightly.

"If it would please you, my Lady," said Nicholas quietly, "I would like to serve as your assistant while you continue this collection. You must be the artist here, but I will do whatever I can to help."

Isabeau wiped away her tears and smiled, "Your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you."

20 more things down!

Was feeling particularly anxious this morning because I spent yet another morning procrastinating and scrolling on my phone..

I got myself up at 12pm and told myself I would make breakfast and then declutter an amount on the challenge.

I put on The Minimalist Podcast and started slowly. I always forget how just allowing yourself to work at the pace you’re comfortable with starting off goes a long way. It doesn’t help to keep telling myself “someday”

The Minimalist said something really nice on the episode I listened to, it was: “Someday” does not exist. It is just merely a trick the mind plays to avoid the present moment.

Gentle reminder: Slow starts are still starts. Focus on making just 5% progress towards something you want to accomplish. The rest will follow. Let’s “someday” be today.

Batch n°2 of this “photo studies without picking colours” challenge I’m doing! Buildings and interiors this time, which means I actually had to worry about perspective for some of these-

I mostly failed to keep them to the hour mark this time around, either because I got caught up in the euphoria of rendering various pots, or because I vastly underestimated the amount of details these had, or because I thought it would be a good idea to paint an entire carousel. 

But hey, this is a learning experience! I'm having fun :D

Hullbrakers: These mers are known for helping wherever they can, their tails capable of producing a shimmery oil sheen-like residue that can change viscosity and texture when activated with their powers. In ancient times they would let their sheen spill out as they swum along the surface as a way to let others know of their presence, and use their hardened sheen to strip barnacles and patch holes of ships that stopped for their help in exchange for food, drink, goods, and trinkets. Now primarily assist other mers in helper roles in multi-type pods. Their tails resemble various anthropogenically-altered marine environments, such as wood-like patterns to mimic shipwrecks, or brightly colored spots that resemble sea glass along the sandy coastal floor.
