Describing Foods - A Masterlist

                As a broke university student, I love reading about food. It’s almost like eating a real meal myself <3.

I get a little angry when characters are eating a meal and I barely get to experience it with them. In that, I mean I don’t just want to know what it is, but what it’s like to eat that food—how it tastes, smells, sounds, and feels. Is a perfect croissant still a perfect croissant without the crack of the exterior, the airiness of the pastry inside, the smell of yeast?

                Probably not. When writing about a dish, the smell, texture, technique, taste, and how it looks are all important to painting the experience, so here’s some words to use when describing a meal:

Taste:

Acidic: Sharp tasting. Often used to describe tart or sour foods as well.

Aftertaste: A different taste that remains in the mouth after eating something

Bitter: Tart, sharp, and sometimes harsh flavour.

Bittersweet: Less harsh than bitterness. Tartness + sweetness.

Bland: Has no significant flavor or texture

Briny: Just means salty. Often describes pickled foods.

Citrusy: Bright flavour like… well citrus fruits—oranges, lemons, limes, etc.

Cooling: Mimics that cooling feel—like mint.

Earthy: Reminiscent of soil. Can be used to describe wines, root vegetables, and mushrooms.

Fiery: Another word for spicy.

Fresh: Light and crisp—describes produce or herbs.

Fruity: Sweet and reminiscent of fruit.

Full-bodied: Rich and ‘feels heavy’ in your mouth. Can describe wines or soups.

Herbal: Bright, fresh, sometimes earthy from the presence of herbs

Honeyed: Sweet or candied taste like honey.

Nutty: Taste similar to the flavors of nuts. Often used to describe certain cheeses.

Rich: Full, heavy flavour. Often dishes that contain cream taste rich.

Robust: Rich + Earthy. Used for lots of wines or aged liquor.

Savory: Describes meaty, earthy dishes and soups.

Sharp: Harsh, bitter, or tart taste. Used to describe acidic foods.

Smoky: Reminiscent of the smell of smoke.

Sour: Biting, tangy, tart flavor.

Spicy: Burning taste.

Sweet: Sugary.

Tangy: Tart, biting taste—feels tingly

Tart: Sharp, bitter, or sour flavour. Used to describe acidic foods.

Woody: Earthy, sometimes nutty taste. Describes some coffees or cheeses.

Yeasty: Earthy taste reminiscent of yeast. Describes beer and bread.

Zesty: Fresh, vivid, or invigorating flavour.

Sound/Texture:

Sound has a lot to do with texture, so I've combined them for this section!

Airy: Light, pillowy texture (think inside of croissant)

Brittle: Hard but easy to break

Bubbly: Usually during heating, when bubbles rise to the surface—low sound.

Buttery: Smooth, creamy texture (think certain pasta sauces)

Chewy: Food that needs to be chewed thoroughly. Can be light and bouncy (chewy bread) or heavy (steak) and sticky (candy)

Creamy: A smooth and rich texture, comes from dairy.

Crispy: Light texture with slight crunch.

Crumbly: Food with loose structure that falls apart into crumbs.

Crunchy: Firm, crisp texture with a sharp, loud noise.

Crusty (behave): Food with a hard outer layer and soft interior (many loaves and breads)

Delicate: Light and fine, feels like it can come apart easily.

Doughy: Soft and heavy, usually pale colouring.

Fizzy: Usually liquids—a hissing sound, feels like ‘static’

Flaky: Light, characterized by layers that come apart during eating.

Fluffy: light and airy.

Frothy/Foamy: Airy bubbles, usually in a drink like a latte.

Gamey: Usually refers to meats when they’re very “meaty”

Gooey: Viscous, sometimes sticky texture from moisture in a dense/solid food.

Hearty: Firm, robust texture.

Juicy: Tender and succulent texture from liquid in a solid food (steak)

Molten: Hot, gooey

Oily: Slick, heavy, lingers on the tongue.

Silky: Fine, smooth texture that feels sleek.

Smooth: Texture free of grit, lumps, or edges.

Snap: A quick, sharp, crackling sound when broken.

Squelch: A soft sucking sound when pressure is applied. Somewhat gross.

Sticky: Gluiness in the mouth.

Succulent: Tender and juicy

Tender: Soft and easy to break down

Velvety: Smooth and rich

Smell:

Acrid: Strong, bitter, unpleasant

Comforting: pleasant, probably calls back to a nice memory

Damp: Wet smelling—probably a bit earthy

Delicate: subtle, faint, not overpowering

Earthy: reminiscent of soil

Fetid: Caused by decay—unpleasant

Fishy: reminiscent of fish

Floral/flowery: Reminiscent of flowers

Fragrant: Sweet or pleasing

Fresh: Cool, crisp, refreshing—produce, probably not cooked

Funky: Something’s gone off

Heady: Strong smell, pungent, rich

Musty: Not fresh

Perfumed: Pleasant, reminiscent of something (can be perfumed with citrus, say)

Piquant: stinging, pungent—tickles the nose

Powerful: strong

Rancid: Definitely gone off, decomposing

Ripe: Strong, usually unpleasant smell

Savory: spicy, salty, no elements of sweetness

Sour: has gone off

Spicy: Sharp, tingles the nose

Tangy: Strong and bitter but in a good way

Tart: Sharp

Woody: earthy smell, reminiscent of wood

Sight:

Usually texture gives us a really good picture of what a food looks like, so here’s some non-texture sight additions:

Blistered: Bumpy exterior.

Caramelized: Usually golden brown

Cloudy: Splotched. Almost see through if not for a slight white or grey mist.

Colourful: Bright and vibrant

Glassy: Resembling glass

Glossy: Smooth, shiny

Marbled: Two colours intertwined

Opaque: Not transparent. Can’t see through.

Ripe: Colourful (can be to a fault). Nearing the end of its edible state.

Scaly: Covered in scales, fish.

Shiny: Appears wet or glossy

Sparkling: Glimmers under the light

Stuffed: An ingredient placed inside a larger part with no additional space.

Translucent: Allows light through

Vibrant: Striking, bright

Food Prep:

How the food is prepared gives it these other attributes. If your character is familiar with cooking (or is the cook themselves!) they may describe food this way.

Baked: Cooked in an oven. Results in browned or crispy outer layer.

Blackened: When food is dipped in butter and coated with spices then cooked in a hot pan—spices darken, making it appear ‘blackened’

Blanched: Food scalded in boiling water and moved to cold water so it stops cooking. Texture comes out soft.

Braised: Food that is briefly fried in fat and then stewed in a pot. Results in seared, crispy exterior with a tender interior.

Breaded: Coated with breadcrumbs/batter then baked or fried so it turns crispy

Broiled: Food cooked with intense radiant heat in an oven or on the grill. Results in a darkened appearance and crispy texture.

Caramelized: Food slow-cooked until it’s browned, nutty, and has a bit of sweetness.

Charred: Grilled, roasted, or broiled and gains a blackened exterior and smoky flavor.

Fermented: Food that’s sat with bacteria, yeast, or another microorganism and has produced acids, alcohols, or gases. Results in a biting, pungent flavor. (Kimchi is fermented)

Fried: Food cooked by submerging in hot oil. Creates crispy, crunchy texture and golden colour.

Glazed: Food with a coating brushed onto its surface. Appears glossy with a thin, flavorful, and crisp outer layer.

Infused: Food steeped in liquid with another ingredient so it carries the essence of that ingredient. Used with herbs usually.

Marinated: Usually meat soaked in liquid containing flavourful herbs, spices, vinegar, or oil.

Poached: Food cooked in near boiling water. Results in tender, moist texture.

Roasted: Food cooked with dry heat in an oven or over the fire. Results in browned exterior and crisp coating.

Sautéed: Food cooked quickly in small amount of fat.

Seared: Food cooked in small amount of fat until caramelized. Finished by roasting or grilling. Results in crisp exterior and tender interior.

Smoked: Food exposed to smoke from smoldering wood for a long time. Results in that distinctive smoky flavor.

Whipped: Food beaten to incorporate air. Light and fluffy.

LORE

They both live in the Fazbear confection factory, along with many other living candy beings. During the day, they pose for tourists. People can come in, to see these unique sentient candy creatures in the environment provided by the company. Almost like a candy creature Zoo.

The candy they shed have special abilities. Depending the type they drop, they could have a sleepy affect, high energy, a happy feeling, a warm feeling, a cooling feeling, ext. To regain the candy these beings shed, they are fed a pure sugar diet, and their shells will harden quickly withing a couple hours. If they were fed fruit, their shells wouldn't harden/form as fast, but the next shedding would have more nutrition.

The company owner, that good old candy magician, William Wonka* (renamed for branding purposes) introduces them and assures to have their conservational efforts at the height of the company's value. The tours often run late, more often running till about midnight.

Once all the customers have left the building, you'd think it'd be quiet. But as the candy that is shed from these being's is rare and highly valuable, they have rich and elite bidders screaming for it. High class parties aren't worth much without Fazbear candy at each desert table after all.

12 AM, is therefore, Harvest time.

So long as their main skeletal frame is intact by the end of the harvest, they will survive and reform. What amazing resilient creatures they are!

What is your favorite reigen headcanon? (Can be anything- a joke, a serious one etc)

Reigen keeps a candy jar in the Spirits and Such office, a habit that started back when Mob was 10 and he was 24. It was supposed to help him quit smoking, whenever he’d get the urge he’d grab a lollipop or a mint instead, but it had the added affect of a good reward for Mob when going out to eat wasn’t an option.

See, it was initially to help the guilt of being a smoker around a young kid—Reigen didn’t want to be a bad influence of course. But it turned into such an integral part of the Spirits and Such office he keeps the candy jar on display right on his desk. Each of the frequently present kids (some of which are employed) have favorite flavors and brands and whatnot, while Reigen’s only preference is Anything But Lemon (funnily enough lemon is Mobs favorite flavor).

I just. Think it’s really sweet and it’s a headcanon I hold near and dear to my heart <3

Jupiter. For sure. They aren't all hard candy though.

Mercury would be like...dirt or something, not even candy. What's a bad candy that's like...dirt? Real bad.

Venus...Swedish Fish, unsatisfying, tough and gummy, nice citrus flavor but not really enjoyable.

Earth is mint chocolate.

Mars would be a red cinnamon ball.

Jupiter would be some sort of firm gummy candy with a soft semi-liquid center. I know it's gas, but it looks biteable. Fruit flavors.

Saturn would be very crunchy with fizz. Nice lemon flavor.

Some random modern HotD headcanons :)

Hey y’all! So I kept thinking of some funny, and very specific headcanons for the HotD characters, so I decided to just make it a whole post. This will actually be my first “legit” post on here, lol! Anyways, this will include some headcanons about Aemond, Aegon II, Luke, Jace, Daemon, Rhaenyra, Helaena, etc. But hope y’all enjoy lol! :)

Ok, I am convinced that Aemond has a secret stash of tea hidden somewhere. He's even put them all in a very nice ornate, antique box. It's his guilty pleasure. He probably would have some Earl Gray, English Breakfast, maybe even some lavender mint for the evenings. He'd keep it secret because all the teas he's gotten are way too expensive, and special.

Luke is an avid Minecraft gamer. Like he's basically built Dragonstone, and the Red Keep in his server. He'll play sometimes with Jace, or maybe even Aegon. But he doesn't let them into that world. Aegon would probably blow it all up with TnT.

Speaking of gaming, I think some people are on the same page that Aegon would be some kind of gamer. He'd be up to date on all the new systems and gadgets. He'd be one of the firsts to have the PS5 when it came out. He probably plays a lot of Call of Duty. Maybe even some Valorant when he doesn't wanna fire up the PS. He'd definitely be cursing and yelling at the game, to the point where Alicent threatens to take it away.

While Rhaenyra watches her shows, House Wives, Rupaul's Drag Race, etc. Daemon pretends to be not interested, but really he's super invested. He'd be leaning against the couch, or the wall totally sucked in. And when Rhaenyra tells him to just sit down and watch with her, he's all like, "no no I don't even like this show". But then he'd say things like, "Well maybe if her gown was better made she wouldn't have been eliminated last episode".

Aegon gives me frat boy energy. And I know I'm not the first to say that lol. You already know he's planning all the parties, and picking the themes. I like to think he'd be very invested into picking the themes. They would be things like, dragon night, wear your fave dragon scale colors. Or something like, Dragonstone beach night, wear your swim suits and flip flops.

Alicent likes to knit. Or maybe crochet? It's her stress reliever activity after dealing with Aegon, and the rest of the boys. Helaena is always giving her new patterns or designs to try.

I think Alicent also likes to take the occasional Buzzfeed quiz. "If you were a cake flavor, here's what you'd be based on your star sign".

Helaena runs a very successful tik tok account. She'd post her outfits, and maybe some art or cool bugs she's found.

Aegon listens to a lot of Megan Thee Stallion and Kim Petras. He's blasting Kim Petras' Treat me like a Slut at least 5 times a day. He gets ready to it in the morning.

Aemond will get down to some Amy Winehouse.

Jace works at the local animal shelter as his summer job. He only got the job cause Rhaenyra said he needed to get out of the house. Plus Helaena also works there, so she helped him get hired.

Aemond would be a great bartender. Not with like actually interacting with customers, but he can make some great drinks. Like he's over here coming up with all these crazy cocktails. Although, like his tea obsession he keeps this on the low. He doesn't want Aegon asking him to make drinks all the time. Gods forbid he asks Aemond to bartend at one of the frat parties.

Helaena was a Monster High girl growing up.

Aemond has a motorcycle. It was his one rebellious purchase. Alicent hates it.

Luke can kick Aegon's ass in any game, video or otherwise. You name it, Call of Duty, UNO, Valorent, Go fish...

Rhaenyra has a bit of a sweet tooth, but she has to hide her candy stash, cause the boys will steal it in a heartbeat. Who would have thought Daemon would love lemon drops so much.

Anyways this is a set of 6 and 1650 yen each, it looks like you get to choose which one you want but they don't have a deal listed for getting all of them.

Next to it are the buttons (also called can badges idk which one is more common over here), set of 12 (6 are regular and 6 are glittery variety). They are 550 yen per button AT RANDOM, THEY WILL GIVE YOU A RANDOM ONE, or a box with one of each all 12 for 6600 yen.

Below that is the polaroid collection, it's also a 12 piece set and you can get A RANDOM ONE, THEY DO NOT LET YOU PICK for 330 yen each or a box with all of them for 3960 yen.

Ok, this last bit is relevant to the in-person cafe experience so it's just for if you're curious about other cool things going on or you have a hobby of watching JP mercari like a hawk and wanna know what to expect!

i wonder if the people who hate mint chocolate also don't like root beer, maybe they have a sensitivity to wintergreen. or ive wondered if maybe they're super sensitive to the tannins in chocolate that make the mint taste as dry/sharp as toothpaste to them. because it's generally dark(er) chocolate used in the chips than milk chocolate in candy bars etc which have a much milder flavor. as a cilantro gene haver i can sympathize but toothpaste is such an antiseptic mint to me that it feels like saying you can't enjoy orange chicken or lemon bars because they taste too much like the citrus scent in dish soap. like fresh squeezed lemonade doesn't taste like how pine sol smells, nor does mint ice cream taste like toothpaste. at least to me

Danganronpa 2 × Mixx Garden

2022 Collaboration Café Drink Recipes & Reviews (Pt. 1)

Since October of 2022, I've been very slowly working my way through a project in which I've recreated (to the best of my ability) the drink recipes advertised as part of the Mixx Garden & Danganronpa 2 collab.

Below the cut will be my recreations and reviews of the first three (out of eleven) character-themed drinks on the menu—the ones for Hajime Hinata, Nagito Komaeda, and Gundham Tanaka.

If you end up creating any of these yourself, I'd love to hear what you think!

I spent my time during the collab looking at all of the images I could find of people's drinks on Twitter and Instagram, searching relevant words and tags in both Japanese and English. I was able to find at least two images of every single drink at the café.

My information on the ingredients comes from the descriptions on the menu, as well as what I could infer from the pictures.

Without further ado, let's begin.

First on the list is Hajime Hinata's drink. The ingredients (translated into English for your convenience) are:

Mint candy pearls (dragées), 8-minute whipped cream, white hot chocolate, mint (garnish, not mentioned in recipe but present in photo)

Now for the record, I have no professional experience making food or drinks. I'm not exactly sure what makes "8-minute" whipped cream distinct from the other recipes being listed with just unspecified whipped cream, but I abided by the rules and whipped the cream for approx. 8 minutes. I assume it has something to do with the stiffer peaks giving it a denser feel.

I wasn't able to find candy pearls that were mint-flavored, which is a shame. But I did manage to find silver ones to match the look of the images.

It was fun to make the white hot chocolate from scratch as well, which I did in a batch large enough also to serve the friends I had over for the New Year's Eve party I was hosting.

Happy birthday, Hajime.

On a personal level I'm typically not a fan of white chocolate, but this was nice. The mint was a very good touch. My friends, who do like white chocolate, appreciated the drink even more than I did. Two of the four people present ranked it a 10 out of 10.

Second on the menu was Nagito Komaeda's drink. The ingredients are:

Raspberries, whitewater (Calpis water), black lemon jelly

If you're unfamiliar with Calpis (alternatively spelled Calpico) and plan on making this drink yourself, do make sure that you get the diluted Calpis water and not the concentrated form.

In the pictures of this drink I looked at, the raspberries appeared to be frozen, which made them have this nice bleeding as they thawed.

Well, I forgot to do that.

If you've never had Calpis water before, you may worry that something with a milky, yogurt-y flavor wouldn't mix well with the lemon flavor. I can assure you that it actually works just fine.

I only had one other friend with me to try this one, and he doesn't like raspberries much. He still gave it a 7 out of 10. I think this drink is great.

Lastly for this post, the third drink was Gundham Tanaka's. The ingredients are:

Whipped cream, blueberries, cola

Simple enough.

I made four to share with others, and apparently forgot to take a picture of one solitary.

After such a fortuitous result with my enjoyment of the prior drink, I knew my luck was soon to turn.

If I had to describe the taste of this drink through comparison, I'd probably say it tastes somewhere between a root beer float and pilk. I do not like either of those.

One of my friends said she quite liked it, and ranked it an 8.5 out of 10. Another called it "harmless".

team prime's favorite sweets/snacks?

Bee likes anything sweet. He really enjoys energon candy (its like gummy/jelly bears). He steals cookies and other treats when Optimus bakes them. His go-to are rust sticks with quartz- it's like breadsticks with salt on them. Sometimes he dips them in oil. He likes to do sweet drinks like oil with puffed energon on top and some chemicals they can eat- surprisingly, bleach is kind of good. I guess it's like, mint flavored for them?

Bulkhead is not used to eating sweets but he does like an occasional rust bun with creamy oil and energon filling, he's all about slightly sweet and tasty stuff. (He'll defo like the eclairs)

Ratchet likes snacks with high grade: think chocolates with alcohol-based filling, he likes those the most. He especially loves the little zinc shells sprinkled with quartz with oil+high grade filling. (Think salty caramel with vodka in a way)

Optimus is the main provider of all sweets, he bakes Cybertron's equivalent of pies, cakes, cookies, rolls and pockets; basically anything you can bake. He also got into making candy so Bee wouldn't make their expenses bigger by ordering so much energon candy whenever they make supply orders. His favorite thing to bake and eat so far are the cookies and he enjoys sharing them with his team.

Prowl doesn't usually eat sweets, he prefers basic fuel with little additions. He does like spicy stuff. However when he sneaks out to refuel at night he will steal anything there is in the pantry and eat it. When he gets hungry he's less picky and will eat stuff he might refused earlier- He's like a little rat. One time Optimus was staying up doing reports and heard a sound in the kitchen corner of the main room. He didn't wanna turn on the big lights so he used his headlights- he found Prowl half-inside his baked goods stash(kind of like a fridge) monching on some zinc and copper cookies. They just stared at each other in silence before Prowl dashed into the darkness. His favorite from the stash are the zinc and copper cookies. (It's like chocolate chip cookies with nut pieces in them)

Sari loves chocolate chip cookies and candy. She has a sweet tooth like Bee. She hates anything lemon-flavored.
