Krej's Bar/main hangout is called The Garden

Shawn Thornton owns a gym, which was their old hangout. The boys still go there, just mostly to train and to catch up with some of their old friends.

The Bruins' territory/home turf is Boston, spreading out around Massachusetts. They believe it is their responsibility to uphold their own brand of justice, keep the peace. Which is probably why Marchy was less torn up than expected about them upon realizing who the B's actually were.

The people of Boston love them. They keep them safe after all. Petty thievery, hate crimes, assault, are all against the code of the B's. Do anything that passes a certain limit, they will cut a smile into your face.

Monty is their contact in the police department. The police have a tentative agreement for whenever they catch wind of other gangs planning something in Boston and they don't want to get in the middle of it they get to tell the Bruins.

Matt Grzelcyk was Charlie McAvoy's senior in college/university. Matt always seemed like a kind soul so it puzzled Charlie as to why he willingly joined the B's

Marchy willingly chooses to help the B's commit tax evasion purely because "the rich can suck it and can stand to lose a few million anyway". Bergy found that hilarious and barked out a laugh so out-of-character everyone in the room stared at him for a solid 10 seconds. That's how Marchy got the unofficial approval of everyone, anyone who can make Bergy laugh like that is someone worth keeping.

Marchy was nicknamed Squirrel for many reasons. Including the way he can run circles around the law. Or the ability to run into trouble on the street and somehow get away from it. But the main one is because some drunk guy at The Garden tried to goad him into a fight by calling him a squirrel, and when Marchy didn't bite, attempted to throw a punch, but ended up tripping and falling over. The nickname stuck ever since.

The B's insisted on Marchy learning self-defense. So sometimes he goes to Thorty's gym to train. He learned mostly from Andrew Ference and the Merlot Line.

He's always bullied by the old B's, but they will throw hands at anyone who fucks with their lawyer-squirrel. It still stands even after they retire, it's just part of the code. They protect their own.

Nick Foligno just came to The Garden for a drink after moving to Boston, and managed to befriend Krej in the fastest, most genuine way. They just enjoy trading barbs and life experiences.

Chris Kelly, who was once a sniper on the B's, now an advisor, found out Fliggy was from an old Family (mafia) and told Krej. That didn't deter him, at all. Uncle Nick was nice to everyone after all.

One night when Chara and Krej were out on a walk they found a teenager Pasta passed out cold. After nursing him back to health Pasta just kept coming back. No one's stopping him. Certainly not Krej's mother hen instincts. He's part of the gang as a runner now.

Mob boss x doctor au

Doctor Shawn (once again, rough draft)-

Shawn decided he was going to become a doctor the moment his parents got turned down for treatment as they couldn't afford it.

Shawn worked hard, multiple jobs to make sure he could get into medical school.

He now is at the top of his ward and makes sure people who can't afford it, gets treatment.

It brings him stress, sleepless nights, nightmares and panic. But he couldn't give it up for the world. He likes helping people, even if it turns him into a dick with a shitty attitude at times.

He's currently in charge of a new doctor. Not because someone's forced him too, more like he's accidently adopted him after he admitted he's just been on coffee runs and studying. That newbie is John Cena.

John idolises him and actually defends Shawn to others when they complain about him being a dick. Even though Shawn can sometimes be a dick to him.

Shawn knows this so as an apology he always leaves a present in John's locker at the end of the month and brings John lunch or dinner in after John stated shawns food looked delicious. Shawn denies it/brushes it off, but John's grateful and appreciates it.

Shawn is actually about to have his first night off in months when goldust texts and phones him up.

Shawn is fuming. But then remembers why he does this job and agrees.

And well, when he turns up at Deadman inc main office he already knows his life is about to change.

And he's not wrong. He already knew of the deadman, mostly because he has a poster of the big guy. He's not blind. The big guy is his type and is attractive as fuck.

He tries to control his panic infront of goldust. He doesn't mind taker because one he's hazy from blood loss and two he's going to be high on drugs so probably won't remember Shawn. Goldust however, remembers everything and has been trying to hook Shawn up with anyone who breathes in his direction.

And after promising goldust he won't tell anyone, he goes home and collapses onto his bed dreading his shift tomorrow.

Shawn runs into taker again a week later. He's sleep deprived because everyone's decided they need to get injured and need medically help. Cena, the poor kid, has been trying his best and shawn will 100% make sure he knows Shawn appreciates his help.

Shawn gets paged about a man coming in with a broken arm, so hes setting the room up when the deadman walks in. "Hey boy toy" which nearly gets taker sliced open with a scalpel.

Shawn begins panicking and apologising and quickly helping kane. Taker just chuckles and asks Shawn out, giving him his number before walking out with a cared for kane.

Shawn was screwed. But, his life was about to get a lot more interesting. A little more sleep might come his way too.

Shawn was a mess when you came upstairs. He had pulled on his hair so much that it was a frizzy mess, not slicked back like it was before. You saw the gun on the table and thanked God he hadn’t used it… you absolutely hated those things.

“Hey, baby…”, you closed the door behind you and put the mug on the table.You managed to grab the gun off of the table and put it somewhere safe. Shawn took a long sip of the coffee.

“Thank you, love…”, he muttered as you went around the back of his chair and softly started massaging his shoulders.

“It’s been a stressful week… why not take the weekend off? We can go to the park, maybe have a picnic. Something to take your mind off this.”, you said softly.

“I’d love to but-”

“Brian can handle business, Shawn. And besides, we won’t be far from the house.”, you said as he turned around to face you, “Please?”, you pleaded.

Are final chapters good or bad?

Typically, most fairytales end with an uplifting tone and moral of the story. The princess is swept off her feet and taken to their happily ever after to live with the prince who saved her. It gives a positive outlook to children, the desired audience, that life is worth living. Love is the end goal, as it heals wounds and should keep you going to fulfill your limited time on earth. Our life is something we want ever since we read about it at bedtime, hoping and praying to the universe that our prince charming may come one day. 

Yet, some end with a bitter bite instead. We feel remorse and anger towards the lack of happiness at the end. As we progress from childhood fiction to adult novels, the dialect changes to something that scars us all. Tips on how to survive a fire, to get out of a sinking car, or how to get away with murder. Our television shows shut out the crowns and love, and instead thrusts real life horrors that may happen one day. 

We are taught later, that love comes with a cost. It isn’t as simple as waking up with a kiss, or being saved from a house of seven mini men. Maybe it doesn’t come at all, and we have to learn with that being okay. Or, even worse, love is taken from us, shredded at tender touches and whispers turning in the wind. 

Shawn wasn’t ready to say goodbye. 

As he watched Andrew lock the door, still unnoticed, he began picturing a life where this wasn’t the scenario. One where you two lived on the countryside, living alongside a cat and a few children. A life which Shawn would wrap his tattoo’d and scarred hands along your baby bump, watching the little butterfly kick in response. Where your skin glowed in the beautiful light and he finally learned how to braid hair. 

But this wasn’t a silly fiction book. This was your life. And future. 

Shawn stayed low to the concrete, crawling towards the nearby alleyway to tuck away. Once he had space and safety, he stood up and began running alongside the brick walls, looking up and round for any sort of door. A staircase. Anything to get in. Shawn noticed the fire escape quickly, feeling his heart skip a beat, at the hope he suddenly found. He kept the phone tight to his face, knuckles white from tension. 

“Yeah, well, I didn’t hurt your family, and all I did was put a few holes in your men. Water under the bridge, am I right? However, I never promised that I wouldn’t touch such beautiful,” Andrew paused. Shawn heard your whimper. “Beautiful, woman. Say, does Shawn tell you about what he does?”

Shawn let out a throaty growl after hearing you whine out. He seethed red, readying to punch the taunting brick between him. “Get away from her, she has no business with me.” He put the phone quickly in his pocket, and swiftly jumped up to reach the fire escape. Somehow, being six foot was just enough to give a leg up. As fast as he jumped, Shawn put the phone back to his ear, barreling up the stairs to your store. 

“She’s making you cowardly, Mendes. You kill people! Sell drugs, murder families, take candy from fucking babies, yet somehow a damn nerd found a way to change your mind. You should have fucking killed me when you had the chance!”

Shawn shook his head, hopping window to window in search of the novels and bookshelves. “You don’t know shit about her, Andrew. All you know is her damn store, she was taught to read books, not loads rifles. She doesn’t know my life, she doesn’t know who the fuck you are! Do not get her involved. Get out before you’ll regret it.”

Once he found the window to the second floor of your store, he opened the window, thanking the universe for it being open, and quietly flung himself in. He didn’t care he left it open, or that he was unarmed. All Shawn wanted was to hold you in his arms and shield you from the pain you were facing now. 

He had never been in this part of the store, where the little nook was hidden upstairs. You were right, this was perfect for kids. The colorful beanbags and small shelves of coloring books and crayons were good enough to have any kid entranced. Shawn wondered if you’d do this for your kids, too. 

There was a small clutter downstairs, and Shawn heard it on his phone as well. He quickly padded towards the stairs, peeking over the railing. All he saw was a mass behind the counter, one of your flying hair and struggling arms, and a large body forcefully whipping you around. Shawn barreled down the stairs, trying to get Andrew’s attention. 

“Hey! Get off-”

Pop. 

Shawn stopped, nearly tripping over his feet and biting his tongue. You stood still, body craning up towards the ceiling and head tilted back in a shocking gasp. The store was silent, nobody moved. The tears long forgotten in Shawn’s eyes suddenly slipped, his heart grasping for your hold. His own daydreams flew behind his mind, the one where you two got coffee, where he would have proposed, the wedding, a kid or two. Shawn had envisioned a whole life, and he dreamt of living his days with you, like the fairytale you were. 

But right now, all you craved was a fucking shower. Looking back in shock, your senses were distraught by gun smoke and something wet. As you slowly took a few steps backwards, the body of Andrew slid eerily down you, his blood staining the outfit you were clad in. He hit the ground in a dull thud, slowly surrounding himself in the thick murder you had just committed. The gun was hot in your clammy hands, so much that you let go of the burned handle and cradled your fingers close to your chest. 

You gasped for air, and Shawn was quick to get you outside. He sprinted to your side, easily throwing you into his arms and running for the door while you whimpered and cried into his neck. Shawn’s crisp collar of his shirt quickly absorbed the blood from your fingertips, staining little drops onto the linen. They were either blood, or your own tears. At this point, you were too damned to care.

About three stops down in the subway did you finally react to his touch, weakly squeezing his hand back and turning your head to hide from the lights on the platforms you passed. Everything felt numbed, your senses, thoughts, even the memory of what happened. Yet, when things became too foreign, you looked down to the crusted blood in your fingernails and it freshly pressed your mind again.

Hopping off the line and climbing stairs to the street did you realize you’d never told Shawn where you lived. In a different scenario, you would have laughed. He really did do his research when you two first met. Shawn quickly took your keys from your purse, when did he grab that, and placed it in the lock to your quaint house. Setting the keys down at the door, you led him to the bathroom.

Shawn really wanted to enjoy this moment, hell a small part of him was, but he’d have to push that back a while longer. He had killed and ravaged more families than book series in your store, so a little blood was never an issue for him. You, however, were crafted from J.K. Rowling herself and the most dangerous thing you could do was cut butter for your cinnamon-raison toast. ‘(Y/N)’ and ‘mobster’ were never in the same sentence, or even correlated, until tonight.

And the thought of you alongside him working in with his mafia made Shawn really, really desperate to push these imagines away for another time. Right now, you were centimeters from a panic attack if the remnants of Andrew weren’t scrubbed off. 

Shawn turned on the bathroom light and closed the door behind him. You sat down on the toilet, hunched over with a heavy head in your hands. Shawn admired the cleanliness of your little apartment. It was homey and loved, clearly with many book posters and loose novels along empty spaces. The bathroom was wood and marble, a few succulents and candled scattered. He gathered you must love Pottery Barn as well. Noted. 

You sniffed gently, wiping your eyes and looked up at Shawn. “I’m sorry I ruined the date.” Shawn slowly slipped to his knees, placing both his warm hands inside yours. “You didn’t ruin anything. Gave me a near heart attack, yes. But, you are perfectly okay, right? We didn’t know he would show up.” Shawn saw your eyes flinch at the mention of previous events, so he squeezed your hands in apology. 

“Do you want me to run you a bath?” With a curt nod, Shawn stood up and worked the shower, placing some soap in with the warm water. As it filled, you stood up and began taking off your jewelry, then shoes. Looking over at Shawn, the tips of his ears were red, and his cheeks were spreading in warmth. For the first time since leaving your store, you gave a small smile. “You know, when I imagined getting naked in front of you, this wasn’t the most ideal time I’d want it to happen.”

Shawn turned around slowly, eyebrows raised and a gentle smirk on his now flushed face. “Do you want me to leave?” You shook your head, a slightly bigger smile creeping onto your face. Tears flooded your eyes, some quickly falling. “I don’t want to be alone.”

He nodded, and slowly unbuttoned his shirt, you following suit. 

Shawn Mendes learned that night the most crucial lesson a book could teach you. He was taught that not everyone is strong, that they can crumble and fall. People can be sturdy, sarcastic, and overall bright and cheerful, yet when it’s time to be vulnerable, we all need someone to pick up the pieces. Shawn Mendes began to understand what it meant to love someone, even if he knew it before. 

And you learned not to fuck around with guns.

Mob boss x Doctor au- Finding out aftermath

Rough because I haven't actually planned Shawn finding out. Just the aftermath. Weird. Also I'm not a writer.

Pat would tell Shawn he was sulking, Sherri would tell him to stop frowning before he ruined his beauty. Shawn couldn't care. He couldn't believe bascially everyone he knew was lying to him.

He keeps his gaze on the run down table in the break room as cena drops down next to him with a huff. "Your shifts just started, can't be that bad" Shawn tries joking. "Just found out a good friend of mine is in a gang. Asked me to clean him up" cena whispers. Shawn let's his eyes fall shut. Either to stop himself from crying or just laughing hysterically. "Found out all of mine are in gangs" Shawn mutters to himself. "I can't believe he kept this from me. We are roomates. What if it follows him back to our apartment? We could both get hurt. Our other roomates could get hurt." Cena snaps. Shawn slowly opens his eyes.

"What should I do?" John asks him. Shawn just stares at him. "I don't know." Shawn whispers. John pauses. He thinks back to the photos he's seen around shawns locker. The photos on his phone. "Oh!...oh...your friends-" "Yes. And I only found out last night when all of them wanted me to fix them up. Idiots, honestly. Why pick gang fights with your mates knowing you'd all have to goto the same place." Shawn scoffs. "Randy. He said hunter wanted everyone to say it was a bar fight." John states. "Hard to believe that when my boyfriend was also jumped. My friends and my boyfriend are all in rival gangs and I never even knew" Shawn sighs covering his face.

"Im so stupid" Shawn whispers. He jumps slightly as cena grabs his hand, lowering. "No. Your not stupid. Your busy being the best doctor ever. I've seen you save someone's life on two hours sleep, when no one else could figure out the problem!" Cena snaps. Shawn winces. "Maybe don't tell our bosses I'm operating on barely any sleep. But thank you john" Shawn smiles. Cena chuckles. "Besides, they're the stupid ones. Not us" cena grumbles. Shawn watches as the kid slouches down. "Damn straight." Shawn nods. Cena smiles slightly. "There's some curry in the fridge. Help yourself to it." Shawn tells him. Cena sit up with wide eyes. "Seriously?" Cena asks. "Mhm, your favorite aswell" Shawn smiles. "Thank you" cena smiles.

"Shawn, the ceo of deadman Inc is here to see you...I know it's your break-" Sherri gets cut off by Shawn standing. "Its alright. I'll deal with him. I'll make him leave" Shawn tells her. "Oh no rush pretty. He's easy on the eyes" she smirks before walking off. Shawn rushes out of the kitchen to see taker leaning against the desk, charming some of the nurses. He storms over and grabs takers arm, dragging him to the staircase.

"I thought you didn't have a shift tonight." Taker states as the door shuts. "Why do you care?" Shawn snaps. "Did you take a shift knowing I'd come by your place to talk to you?" Taker asks. Shawn looks down. "No." A complete lie. He didn't want to talk to any of them. "Shawn. We didn't want you to find out this way. Hell, I didn't even know you knew those punks" Taker huffs. "How was I supposed to find out?" Shawn demands. "Im not sure yet, alright? I just know it wouldn't be with us bleeding half to death and turning up for help." Taker admits. Shawn leans against the wall. "Dont be angry doll, please. I didn't want to put you a risk. If the police found out we were seeing each other. I didn't want you to lose all of this" Taker sighs. "Yeah, I'd really miss the sleepless nights in prison" Shawn mumbles.

Taker chuckles. And shawn, shawn hates it. He hates that he loves that sound. That it makes his stomach twist. "I understand if you don't want to see me anymore shawn. I just wanted to make sure you were OK. And you weren't answering the phone and, well I was just scared something bad had happened." Taker tells him. Shawn had to give the bigger man credit, he was the only one who contacted shawn or even bothered to come find him. The other boys just told him it wasn't a big deal and they'd deal with him later. Taker? Taker seemed to actually care about shawns feelings about it. "What if I asked you to stop?" Shawn asks. Takers eyes widen. "I mean. It would take a couple of months, you know, for me to hand the gang related stuff to kane, but I'd just have my business as my main form of money." Taker tells him.

Shawn looks at him. "You'd give the gang up for me?" Shawn asks shocked. "I love you shawn. My businesses have always been there as a way of an out. I just...I just never had a reason." Taker admits. "And kane and Paul?" Shawn asks. "Oh they'd hate it and be contacting me everyday. But, if that's what you want. I'd give it all up" Taker promises. "Its not fair. I can't make you give It up...that would be like asking me to give this up" Shawn sighs. "Would you? If I gave up the gang, would you give this up? Come join my business." Taker questions. Shawn looks down before slowly shaking his head. "I couldn't. I want...no I need to help people. I can't leave" Shawn whispers. "Good. I'm not asking you too." Taker tells him.

"Dont give up the gang. Not yet. I'm sure our relationship will get to a point when we both know its over for the gang life." Shawn states. "I get a call during our wedding?" Taker smirks. Shawns cheeks heat up. "Our relationship is on thin ice, you cannot go talking about our wedding" Shawn tuts. Taker chuckles before pausing and thinking for a moment. "How about I take you to coffee? As a sorry?" Taker asks. Shawn looks at him and a massive smile breaks out on his face. "You are so cheesy" Shawn chuckles hitting his arm. "Is that a no to the coffee?" Taker asks. "God no. Infact, to make it up to me, you can get the whole ward a coffee" Shawn smirks. "Yes sir" Taker salutes. "Good boy" Shawn smiles. Taker smiles before giving Shawn a quick kiss and walking back onto the ward.

Shawn raises an eyebrow and follows. "Alright! I'm getting the whole ward coffee. What do you all want?" Taker asks. The nurses and doctors quickly start giving their orders. Shawn just watches in awe as this big bad mob boss is being cooed at by a bunch of old nurses about coffee. Sherri stands next to shawn as the younger lot give their orders. "Hes a keeper" Sherri states. "Why? Because he gets you lot coffee to say sorry to me?" Shawn asks. "No. Well yes. But, because he actually remembers how you got your first date. And he actually cares about you. And well, he's cheered you up. I hate working with miserable shawnie, you know that" Sherri smirks. Shawn chuckles. "Yeah. He did." Shawn huffs.

He pauses. "Wait, how did you know we got our first date over apology coffee?" Shawn asks. "Your needed in room 5 Shawn!" Sherri calls as she walks off with a chuckle. "Sherri!" Shawn whines. "Cmon Shawn. We've got a patient. And coffee soon" cena yawns. "How are you tired? Your shift just started" Shawn huffs as the sleepy man drags him off. He gets one last glance at taker who's still taking orders before he's shoved into a room to deal with a child who has a toy car stuck up his nose.

"This will be a long night" Shawn huffs to cena. Cena just cracks a smirk and both men enter doctor mode.

I. FAQ:

1. Will other egos/characters be in the story? - Right now we don’t plan on adding any other egos, be it Jack’s or Mark’s or anybody else’s. As for characters, they appear as we go.

2. What’s Marvin’s gender? - They are genderfluid, meaning their gender can change: male, female, both or neither. Usually, they don’t care what pronouns you address them [he/she/them] if they do feel like using a certain pronoun that day - they will politely ask for it.

3. What about time and place of the events? - Well, we didn’t want to limit ourselves to a certain country, but it’s a place in the northern hemisphere, with port, forest and river. The time is present or even slightly futuristic considering existence of BING, but some aesthetics can appear like from ’20 and ‘30.

4. Will Jack be in the story? - No. For the personal reason, we prefer not to include real people in this AU

5. Are there/Will there be any romantic or intimate relationships in the story? - As the story starts, Marvin, Anti and Jackie are in open poly-relationship, however, it’s not the main point of the story nor will be any romantic relationship. As for others... we will just have to see, no spoilers :)

6. Who is Jacques/Angus/Connor/Bing/Shawn? - Jacques is French artist who appeared in series like Passpartout - Angus comes from OLD series on Jack’s channel called: The Survival Hunter - Connor (The Announcer) is an ego whose voice appears in series like “Japan World Cup” or “Stories Untold”. Connor is a name I came up with - Bing (Bingsepticeye) is a fan character, that was created as Jack’s version of Mark’s Google (Before Mark’s Bing appeared) - Shawn Flynn is a character from BATIM, Jack did the voice for him in the game. (None of those characters has canon name /except for Shawn/ or design so all of them were designed by me.)

7. Are all artworks on your blog related to the Mob AU? - No, I do other stuff as well, this is my art blog, all Mob AU stuff will be tagged as #egos-mob-au

8. Have you ever dreamed about having an arranged marriage on your twentieth birthday with the son of the man who is the head of Toronto’s biggest mob? No? A bunch of bad guys with guns in their belts standing in the room, watching you with hawk eyes, ready to kill anyone any minute, even you as well, because no life matters to these men.

You are wearing a white lace dress that brings out your curves perfectly, makeup on point, hair in an elegant, low bun as you stand a few feet away from the registrar you supposes is about to shit his pants knowing damn well what kind of crowd he is in. Your uncle at the side, excited for this day to come, because he has been planning on it for over a decade. You are being sold to a Mob and quite frankly, you are not even mad about it. You knew this would be your life, you were told at a very young age that this is your destiny and you knew nothing else than this, so you feel even excited because it’s like your fate is finally reaching you… Have you ever dreamed about this? No? That’s a shame, because for me, this is reality.

The sweet taste of revenge in my mouth is intoxicating as my hand is holding onto the ridiculous bouquet in my grip, something we picked up on our way here to make it look like it’s a real wedding, when it’s as far from being normal as it can.

I glance over at Kevin for a second and he nods at me.

We’ve been waiting for this day for a long time, Kid. It’s finally happening. I can almost hear him say it.

The double doors open and I don’t have to think twice about the identity of the man who walks right in with confident steps. Manny “The Scalpel” Mendes is a ruthless criminal and boss, head of the Mob that runs all dark businesses in the city of Toronto. I’ve seen the man only once in real life but his face is burnt into my mind forever. This was the face my parents last saw before they were brutally murdered by the man who is now heading in my direction with a satisfied grin on his face that I want to wipe off with your own fists, but instead, I smile back at him.

“Joana, you look amazing,” he compliments stopping right in front of me, two of his guards standing close behind him.

“Thank you, Sir,” I nod politely.

“Are you ready for your big day?”

“Absolutely,” I nod with a small smile and it’s clear he likes what he sees. An obedient piece of arm candy, just perfect for his son. Wives aren’t really part of the businesses around here, women are seen as objects, pretty decorations, toys in the bedrooms for the men that run everything. Little does Manny know, I will not be the angel I’m appearing to be now.

“In this case, let me introduce you your soon-to-be husband, my son, Shawn Peter Raul Mendes.”

Stepping aside he turns to the door and moving my gaze from his satisfied grin to the entrance I finally see him.

Shawn Mendes definitely inherited the best genes of his parents. The tall, muscular guy I watch walk in is surely the favorite of women and I wonder why he really need an arranged marriage. I can’t imagine him having trouble to get himself a wifey, but it’s a luck to me. The fitted suit must have cost a fortune and I wonder if his hair is the creation of a very talented hairstylist or those curls are just as bouncy in the morning as they are now. He seems focused, maybe a little worried, but he is doing a great job hiding his emotions, only that I’m excellent in reading people. His honey eyes move over to me and as they meet with my glare, my ears start ringing for a moment. It’s the moment I’ve been thinking about every day in the past fourteen years and now that it’s really happening, I can’t help but feel a little overwhelmed. After all, this is my wedding day and he is my future husband.

It’s a bad thing I’m already planning on killing him.

Shawn stands right in front of me, eyes glaring down at my slim figure and for a moment I think he is about to say something, but he remains silent.

Manny orders the registrar to start and I stand next to Shawn in front of him as he say his usual speech, talking about love and uniting two souls for the rest of their lives.

His life is going to be short, I think to myself and almost even smile at the thought, but manage to keep a straight face.

“Now Joana and Shawn, please join hands and face each other,” the officiant croaks out and I can feel all eyes on me as I turn to face Shawn who does the same. He moves his hands and they meet mine in the middle, the warmth of his touch almost causing me to shudder. His eyes are intensely burning down on my face and I wonder what he is thinking about me.

Does he think I’m pretty? Is he mad he has to marry me? I force myself to focus as the officiant continues his speech.

“Joana, do you take Shawn to be your husband?” he asks and I say my answer loud and clear so everyone in the room can hear it.

“I do.”

“Shawn, do you take Joana to be your wife?”

His answer arrives a little slower than mine, for a second I even think that he is about to say he doesn’t, but then he finally speaks up.

“I do.”

The lack of enthusiasm in his answer would be hurtful to any bride, but not to me. I couldn’t care less if he wants to marry me or not. I won’t cry into my pillow all night long because he didn’t seem happy saying I do.

It’s silent in the room as the registrar finishes off his speech, but I could swear I hear a round of relieved sighs following Shawn’s answer.

Shawn pulls a black diamond ring on my finger, the rock so big and heavy I’ll surely feel the weight difference between my hands from now on. Then you put the subtle white gold ring on his finger and sign the papers, making the wedding official.

“And now, you may kiss the bride,” the officiant finishes, but Shawn’s answer comes so fast, I’m sure he has been planning on saying it the whole time during the ceremony.

“No kiss. The ceremony is over.”

His hands let go of mine fast as if I had the plague and he walks away, joining a group of congratulating men, leaving me stand there just a tad bit hurt, but mostly excited that the plan is officially on.

From now on I will be working on making the Mendes family pay for what they did to my parents while they won’t even know who is trying to ruin them from the inside. Because who would be suspicious of a gorgeous, stupid little girl when Toronto’s number one Mob is collapsing right in front of the eyes of the man who has killed so many? That’s right.

Part 1

Maybe Joe Goldberg was on to something. 

Take that with a grain of salt, because becoming a stalker and finding a victim, breaking into her apartment and killing her one-night stand might not be the best way to win someone over. His morals were corrupt, which we can all agree, and his sociopathic tendencies revolve around trapping his love for his own mental gain are pretty ridiculous. Sounds familiar in this modern day, huh?

However, what Joe Goldberg got right, in the whole twisted storyline, is that owning a bookstore is a damn fairytale every day. Lining the shelves with books ranging in complexity and diversity, bound together by a bonding agent that preserves stories longer. Glue, string, leather, it’s exciting to guess the contents of books judged by the paperbacks. How you would never guess that Winnie the Pooh was loosely based around mental illness, or that Crime and Punishment kept a blatant focus on merciless murder. 

Some authors chose to write about mundane topics that show the blunt reality of life, love, and daily struggles. The occasional whimsy take on adolescence and summer flings going into winter memories. There’s beauty in the simplicity of topics, and authors can sculpt such visions into pieces of extended art. It’s astonishing.

Yet, you’ve never been more shocked to see a familiar face push open your door. The bell rang above his head, inches from his slightly bruised face. As he looked around in interest, brows furrowed and shoulders tensed, you called out. 

“Finally found me, eh? How long has it been, three days? A week?”

You stepped out from behind a shelf, gently placing the book in your hands correctly in the empty slot before approaching the customer.

“Yeah, three days too long. Nice to meet you, (y/n) (l/n).”

Shawn held out his hand, a smug smile on his slightly swollen lip. It was busted in the corner, and half his face was raised and red, purple on the peaks. There was blood on his knuckles, per usual. As you gently placed your hand in his for a quick shake, he let out a sigh. Shawn’s shoulders immediately fell with the small contact, something you caught quickly.

“Don’t worry. Remember the ‘arrangement’ that I had to fix? Still working on it. You should see the other guy, princess. Not to brag, but he’s worse.”

You bit your cheek, choking down a laugh. “You’ve done it, I’m swooning.” Shawn nodded knowingly, looking around the store finally, gazing at the displays and shelves of books. The store was big for being a hole-in-the-wall, having a second floor dedicated to non-fiction and a quiet reading nook. You were proud, to say the least.

“How long has this store been here? I can’t say I remember seeing it.”

You began talking towards shelves you’d previously been tucked behind, signaling him to follow. “Been about two years coming up. I worked throughout high school and even a year in college to save up. Can’t tell you how much elbow grease it took to shape her up, but you wouldn’t know that feeling, Mr. Mendes.”

As you began placing books in order of author, Shawn reached down to grab some as well. “What are you implying, that I haven’t worked a day in my life? You’d be surprised.” Shawn stepped forward, reaching over your body to place a book higher up on a shelf. 

“You inherited your mob throughout bloodline, once it landed in your lap, the people who had worked longer took the dirty work. You just like throwing punches, big boy.” He scoffed, reaching out and holding your wrist. Looking up, you realized the close proximity between your bodies. 

“I worked harder than anyone in my blood to get where my mafia is today. My great grandfather started the job, and I intend to continue what he created.” You felt his breathe on your lips. A flush creeped onto his cheeks, realizing where he stood. “Don’t you want more from life, Shawn?”

He let go of your wrist gently, stepping back with his smirk. “Aw, you care. How cute.” You rolled your eyes, picking up the empty box and walking to the front of the store. “Come on, haven’t you wondered what it feels like to be free? Do spontaneous things without worrying about who will be there, or how many guns you need to carry?”

Shawn hoisted himself onto the check-out counter and watched you fiddle around the register. He bit his lip, recoiling at the sudden pain and then licked the blood slowly starting to bubble up. “I’ve always been this way, princess. It’s too late to save me now.” You looked up from the pen you were playing with, setting it down to place your hand on Shawn’s knee. 

“If you ever need a break, to get away or even have someone to talk to, you know where I am. You know my name, my work, hell you probably know my address and net worth.” He gave a genuine smile, nodding gently. “But, you can’t bring your mob troubles in here. Please, keep your work away from my beautiful novels. They crave tender love and attention, not bullet holes.”

He scoffed, and placed his hand over yours. “Thank you, (y/n). I’ll try my hardest.” Shawn tore his hazel eyes from you to look at the wall clock near the door. “I need to head out, I have a meeting tonight.”

Hopping off the desk, your hands were still intertwined. “Thank you for stopping by, Shawn. It was nice to have you here, even if it was for a few minutes.” He brought your hand to his lips, placing a gentle kiss. “The pleasure is all mine. Hopefully, the next time you see me I won’t be so roughed up.”

As he reluctantly let go of your hand, Shawn gave you another smile, a small nod, and walked towards the door. 

Maybe Joe Goldberg was on to something. Just, maybe.

Mer AU Pt. 1 under the cut

Cameron is based off a betta fish, Eddie is a seahorse, Spencer is a vampire squid, Cassius is a based off a blue-ringed octopus, Shawn is a shark, and Zach is a sea dragon.

In what little barebones worldbuilding I did with this AU, I pictured them all as deep sea creatures (because they’re mostly night mobs haha). Hence they’re very bioluminescent.
