(I love how Reigen decides to trust his judgement. Like he lists all these reasons to not go, and says “that’s why you should”.... then he realizes that Mob can make his own decisions, and it’s okay. And he choses to be a supportive adult rather than a controlling one.)

Reigen’s confession scene: original Japanese manga text analysis and translation

I had a ton of fun translating the Japanese text from the “no one will save me” Mob headspace scene and it’s fantastic practice, so I decided to personally translate the raws from Reigen’s confession scene and analyze that a bit.

Notes:

- なんの力も無いんだ! — I dont have any powers!

Reigen uses a widely-unused kanji here, 「無い」 or “nai”. A.K.A, Japanese negation. It’s almost always written with kana (興味がない、続けない、etc). I imagine the kanji was included here for greater emphasis. Reigen does actually use another unused kanji later in this conversation though (事 instead of こと) so I also think there’s a case to be made for it being an intentional decision made to make Reigen’s speech patterns seem eccentric, but I would need to look at much more of his manga dialogue to confirm that.

- 本当は何も知らねぇんだ。— I honestly don’t know shit

Okay. He doesn’t actually use the shit word here, but cursing is a bit strange in Japanese because of how tone can be subtly indicated by verb form, something we can’t really do in English. Reigen uses a very casual, rude form of 「知らない」 that I think is most faithfully represented by a curse word. He’s obviously trying to put negative emphasis. The Crunchyroll sub put it as “I don’t know a damn thing”. I chose “I honestly don’t know shit” because it’s a bit less of a deviation from the raw dialogue.

- 今まで師匠面してすまなかったな… — I’m sorry for acting like your master up until now.

I thought the use of 「師匠面して」 was interesting. 「師匠」 is “Shishou/Master”, which is straightforward, but 「面」 is a kanji that means “mask, face, surface” and it’s basic readings are “メン/men”, “おもて/omote” and “つら/tsura”. Reigen uses a lesser-known reading and meaning of this kanji, so much so that ONE included furigana over the kanji to clarify the reading. 「面」 here is read as 「づら」and is used as a suffix to mean “looking like a…, acting as if a….”.

お前だけが特別な訳じゃない。— You’re not the only one who’s special.

「訳」 (wake) is my mortal enemy, because it’s a word in Japanese that’s so close to being a particle but isn’t a particle. It’s a word indicating a conclusion reached from personal reasoning or evidence, or circumstance, or meaning related to a situation. It’s abstract, so it can be a bit tricky deciding how best to translate a sentence it’s used in. Sometimes it is not directly translated at all, which is what I did here, taking it more as a subtextual indicator of context than as a word in the text itself. However, this is out of personal preference, and I would totally accept it being translated more overtly as “You’re not the only one with special circumstances.”

- ここだけの話… 俺は隠してる自分の本当の姿が大嫌いなんだが… — Just between you and me… I absolutely despise the true nature of my secret self.

Two notes about this one:

「ここだけの話」 is a phrase that directly translates to “this is a discussion for only right here”, but that would sound kind of weird to say in English, and it means the exact same thing as “just between you and me”.

「隠してる自分の本当の姿」 is a DOOZY. It’s a little clunky, but I think it fits for Reigen to be a bit dramatic with it. I sort of played around with it a little bit, but strictly translated, it means “my hidden self’s true form”.

- 大丈夫だよ。行こう。— I will be okay. Let’s go.

This happens in the scene where Mob and Shigeo accept each other (not a part of Reigen’s confession), but I included it for a good reason. This isn’t so much a translation note as it is a commentary on the manga, but I think I like the manga version of the scene just a little better than the anime, just for the “大丈夫” thing between Reigen and Mob. Mob’s referencing Reigen’s previous words, 「もう俺がいなくても大丈夫だ。大丈夫。」 — “You will be okay even if I’m not here anymore. You will be okay”, which are beautifully enhanced by the sudden panel of Reigen watching Mob in that moment with a small smile, silently reassuring him that it’s true. It’s such a small detail but it means so much to me, and I’m a little sad it wasn’t fully preserved in the anime. But, yknow how it is. Not everything can make it in.

I've been having a lot of genshin x twst brainrot lately so here we go, I'll try to draw them later but rn I don't have my tablet with me so please bear with the messy text block

((note that if we're speaking twst lore then technically ALL of them would be catalyst user (save for rook, silver, sebek and maybe vil since he did fencing but we're not gonna talk about them here) but we're going to ignore all of that and go with aesthetic/vibes))

starting from ace, I feel like he'd either use bow or polearm because as seen in the og alice in wonderland movie, all of the trump soldiers use some sort of lance(?), but I'm going with bow because I feel like it matches his vibes the most. rust would fit his overall visual especially with his dorm uniform (bc I am not about to teyvat-ivy their outfits I Am Not The Art Archon).

if we’re talking about kits/skill set, I picture him having an anemo vision (dead friend aside and purely by aesthetic bc we dont know much abt his past/um/I will not kill deuce) and being an off-field dmg dealer sort of like yelan and his skill being an enemy aggro that also do a mini swirl like mona’s/faruzan’s. so a sub dps maybe.

then we go to deuce, I want to say he’s a catalyst like heizou that punches his enemies like he got a personal grudge but listen to me : deuce with a claymore. deuce just. swinging that shit around and beating the mobs to death. I mean I can picture him being a catalyst that do normal, sort of calm attack until you make him do his charged attack and it’s a rage-filled uppercut sort of but. claymore deuce. deuce wielding song of broken pines.

now about the kit, I can’t see him with any other vision than hydro and I’m torn between him being an elemental dmg dealer with parry gimmick like beidou or just a full blown physical dps. while hydro isn’t a good element to do physical reaction, at the same time I also see him being able to deal some sort of decent physical dmg so I’m really conflicted about what his kit is going to be like. but I DO see that he’s going to be the type thats going to scale off of hp like zhongli or nilou.

next is trey, I see him as somewhere between sword or polearm, but then I decided on polearm because imagine trey with those baker hand swinging a polearm around. also he reminds me of thoma for some reason (househusband material, serving powerful/important figure??). Also he’d look good wielding skyward spine, no?

I cant decide on his vision but I can see him being dendro, mainly bc he’s green and also that the whole reaction with dendro kinda(?) fits his unique magic ig. Which means he’d probably be both a healer and em support/buffer. I think he’d have kits similar to shenhe and bennett where he increases dmg with his skill while he heals and buffs em/atk with his burst and doing small continuous dmg.

cater is kind of hard for me to picture in this setting. like ace I do think that bow fits his vibe, but so does polearm and sword. I literally cannot decide. I wanted him to be like childe where he wields one weapon and change stance during skill, but I already have different idea for his skill that would match his um better so. I ended up going with polearm after seeing mika with that crossbow

just like his weapon, I cannot decide on a vision for him. it’s either cryo or electro, based on his personality alone. he reminds me of fischl in a weird way. kit wise I think he’s going to summon his clone for his skill that function more as totems like yae’s that also do aggro (it is a bit funny imagining like 3 caters ganging up on a mob in game tho lmao). I think it wont do that much damage but it’ll be a consistent element applicator. as for his burst I really have no idea except maybe it’ll be like gorou where he’ll summon just 1 copy/totem that follows the character and also buffing/dealing damage alongside them(?)

now riddle, we can already tell that this boy is a full blown catalyst dps. I’m sure he can wield a sword/polearm just fine but catalyst just seems to fit his vibe the most. blackliff agate would look sick on him even if it’s not a 5 star weapon.

and yeah he’s definitely pyro. his kit would also be like yanfei and klee mainly bc I cannot think of a way to integrate his unique magic completely (zhongli’s burst is literally stunning the mob and his um is more close to taking the vision away from his enemy teyvat-wise). so he’d be a normal+charged atk focused dps. like yanfei he’d have this point(?) thingy(???) on his back everytime he do normal attack and if he do charge attack with them (max 4) he’d do big damage. I think his skill would have that pyro/elemental res effect while dealing damage and I think it would be cool if his burst is a one-shot pyro hit that deals lots of dmg like hu-tao’s while also giving him the maximum amount of point for charge attack. 

That is all for now, I think. might also do a hsr au with heartslabyul (please don't ask me why I keep throwing them into aus. I. Am not. A Heartslabyul fan I swear ((that's a lie)))

Favorite character: Serizawa c: hes a 6w5 so legally i must enjoy him but also i just like him ... he has curly hair and is cool OH AND TOME !!!! shes fun :) i dont fully remember my interesting thoughts on her but i enjoy her and how she works for reigen post canon. i think her weird girl charms get to me

Least Favorite character: uhhhh probably mogami or shous dad... theyre both just annoying like whateverrr stop being a dumb adult stop beefing with 15 year olds losers...

5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): 1.... serirei?? is that the ship name. serizawa and reigen. basically canon ? 2. mobteru again basically canon 3. . um . theres not much ships i really have with this show so idk if i can do 5 but i can at least do three bc i think tome and mezato is cute :) i briefly became obsessed w them for a bit after season 2 .... i think the ship of the two claw guys . the like sword one and the other guy is pretty cool...

Favourite friendship: i think mob and reigen are fun as friends :) especially as they grow older, i think the dynamic would be fun. also teru and ritsu are fun when theyre together. worlds most dramatic 12 year olds.

How I feel about this character: I like her !!! i feel like shes not talked about much outside of ships which is a shame because i feel like if people came together on her character (this includes people writing canon) then there could be a compelling character here that wouldnt deny her roots or just stay the same sort of trope she used to be. I cant deny i do enjoy that they occassionally dip into her little interest in tarot :) its nice to see that trait remembered.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: sonic of course, shadow, blaze a bit?, metal sonic anddd... yea thats it

My non-romantic OTP for this character: i think her with silver or knuckles is always fun :) idk why i think its because they bounce off of each other well. equal levels of no braincells happening here at least with silver. and with knuckles i feel like they could have a fun brother sister dynamic.

My unpopular opinion about this character: what is the popular opinion on her .... idk ill just use this as more of me talking about her character in general. i wish people would use her abandonment issues more, or at least like integrate that into her character since i think its a trait that shows up a bit in the little visual novel and in sonic frontiers and i think that makes sense as a trait for her

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: if she was ever playable again . I HAVENT played the sonic frontiers dlc but i think giving her a little spin off game ala the princess peach games would be fun. maybe then her team from sonic heros can be used again and i could like care about big and cream outside of them being sparingly used in canon .. and big not just being a joke ... also i just want more development for herrr im always begging for development or character in this series i know its for children but plsss also i wish they would like actually like .. fully deal with her whole thing with sonic... it feels like they wanna pretend her obsession just never happened and wasnt like the main thing with her character before they basically turned her into sally acorn.

Phil collects little trinkets. if he sees something shiny, sorry, it’s his, and you can’t really do much about it. he cocks his head like a pigeon when he’s confused. he’s also a broody motherfucker, as in parental, not angsty. his feathers fluff up when he’s scared or frustrated.

Niki really likes being warm. that’s the only reason she hasn’t moved in with Techno, Phil and Ranboo- because it’s cold as fuck and it’s usually overcast. She does the little cat kneading thing to pillows and cushions. she also sits on things that she’s not really supposed to, like countertops and the back of the sofa rather than the cushions.

Ranboo picks up blocks and carries them around. he tracks dirt all over the place and Techno wants to be mad, but he can’t bring himself to because it’s really endearing. he also randomly teleports when he’s scared. he can’t do it on command since he’s only part enderman, but if something spooks him he teleports to wherever his brain registers as a safe place.

Connor. um. i dont know anything about hedgehogs and also Connor is basically a crack fanfiction personified. i think any weird quirks he has are just his general Connerness. like i think he’s just Like That.

hi! i read the Azul Ashengrotto Thoughts rb and it made me remember smth i thought about last night. i think your idea about "if azul is stronger/better at magic (than jade) then he can bypass the 'once per person' limitation" is more likely than what i thought but

on the contrary if he might not have been good enough to bypass the limitation, do you think jade's uhhh-- history (? im sorry i dont know the right word!!) would apply to him? like lets say jade successfully uses it on octa mob A then transfers it to azul. would azul still be able to use it on octa mob A or not bc it was "already used once on someone"

Man, this .. this is so interesting, I never even considered that the history of one's magic can be a possible factor. To this, I think that Azul steals the ability but the "history" is not applied. Probably because what Azul gets is really just the ability and not anything about its history. Like, for example, someone had to develop their abilities of course. Azul would probably not "feel" that history in the sense that he wouldn't really "feel" the difficulties or other things that the original user went through to polish their ability to what it is. He just has their ability now. So maybe theoretically, with Jade's UM, he can use the UM on Octa mob A if Jade used it on him again. And also, it's Azul's magic, not Jade's. So maybe the person will block out Jade's magic, but it does not recognize Azul's magic.

But if assuming that he can't bypass the limitation, then yea I don't think that he'd be able to use it on Octa mob A twice.

!! It's always been an hc of mine that Jade used his UM on Floyd at some point! And that's how he even found out about his limitations. Not sure what moment exactly would have gotten him to unlock that kind of ability, because from what we see in main story, UMs just suddenly kinda appear when someone is in a particularly stressful moment (like Deuce with the thugs in chapter 5 and Epel with the rogue Charons in chapter 6). Either way, unless they really fought a lot as kids, I don't think his first target was Floyd. the thing about trying to get back into world of warcraft roleplaying is that a majority of my memories of the game are repressed and. warcraft has so much loreeeee i don't want to get anything wrongggg

you can have So Many Things as pets. birds, reptiles, bugs and arachnids (not ideal for my spider phobia. dark shoutouts to people in legion dalaran with giant spider pets chilling at krasus's landing during legion), So Many Guys. if you do the beast master artifact storyline (or whatever the follow-up to it is post-legion) you do get a dog as an extra hunter pet but you can transmog them into different animals

i DO love worgen druid though. i have a gimmick alt (inspired by peacecraft) that's a worgen druid and i love her. the worgen druid forms are really fun. as far as specs go i have a feral druid and ive played a guardian druid in classic, but both of those require being up close and personal with mobs and also all feral druid skill icons look the same and i can never tell them apart

basically um so ive drawn a buncha maps of islands andstuff and theres a buncha nations.. yassez is the one ive. yknow. actually populated so far. the other 3 plotrelevant ones are isthmus and polonge (isthmus has claimed territory in polonge and fully occupies yassez). polonge is also at war with geuzi. fontaine has a treaty with geuzin. jicama and selenia are fighting over a strip of coast. danovsk is also fighting jicama over a pass thru the mountains. branthia is waiting on the sidelines ready to do very important Peacekeeping such as Supplying Weapons to insurgent terrorist cells.

Ekubo: Those wings are using your body as a source of energy. The act of them manifesting themselves, is causing changes to your body.  When I possessed you to get you into bed just now, your body felt hollow and empty, it felt like if I exerted any effort something would break. And on top of that, you have a fever.  I’m just speculating, but I think your bones are hollowing out.  Birds have hollow bones with internal struts, so that would cause your body to become lighter.  Should have taken those wings off by force from the very beginning.  You could probably fly with those now. 

Ekubo: There’s something else Reigen: There’s more?  Ekubo: Yeah... just a bit... listen. Ekubo: They’re not pigeon, i dont think.... they’re crow.  Reigen: Why? Ekubo: You want an explanation?

Ekubo goes into a lenghty explanation: Well, pigeons and crows are both medium sized birds, but they have different wing structures. In crows the 10th primary is very short. The feather arrangement in pigeons have an internal gap, crows have this too, but they’re~ He gets cut off. Reigen: THIS IS SO UNNECESSARY!! ARE YOU SOME KIND OF PROFESSOR, YOU EVIL SPIRIT.... Ekubo: Hey, I just looked this up while you were out. You dont even know what you are possessed with. You are so much trouble. Reigen: Oh....um.... thank you so much for putting in all of this effort.  Reigen: Actually.... now that you mention it, if it’s crow, I think I might have some ideas on how this started. Ekubo: Huh? What did you do? 

Reigen: Well, nothing really. I just greet them every morning. There’s a saying that if you greet a crow, then it won’t do bad things, like go through the trash and such.  Ekubo: Why? Reigen: I’d just say hello to them and stuff. Ekubo: So they probably regarded you as one of their own. And if they did, it’d baffle them why you didnt have wings. 

Ekubo: You wanna see if you can fly?  This isnt a curse, or a hex or somethiing like that. It’s more like a very strong wish. They want you to fly too. 

Reigen: I feel like if I flap my wings, I’ll die. 

Ekubo: That makes sense. You probably dont have the muscles necessary to use the wings. Even if you jumped off of a high place, you’d only beable to flutter while falling. 

Reigen: Yeah

Mob: I heard master was in trouble so I came as fast as I could.
