The 72nd Hunger Games: The Dichotomy
Victor: Polly Dolman, 16, District 8
The vast majority of the arena is a snowy tundra. Full of ice, snow, and mountainous ranges, a treacherous landscape is created for the tributes to navigate. While there are almost no trees to hide in, a few abandoned and dilapidated huts are stationed around the arena.
The center of the arena, though, is just the opposite. It’s warm, and lush with plants, fruits, and vegetables. Like a tropical jungle, it’s thick with thriving foliage and trees. But this only lasts about 100 feet, creating a harsh contrast with the snowy land. Suddenly, it’s all white and nothing else. The plants include a hodgepodge of things that aren’t meant to go together: pineapple plants, strawberry bushes, persimmon and coconut trees, watsonia, tulips, irises, and cobra-lilies.
In the tropical center of the arena, there are two distinct mutations. While the flowers are beautiful, each one has been modified to be extremely toxic if you inhale the pollen or drink the nectar. Along with this, the bugs do not stop biting. They're not deadly, per se, but they cause extreme and persistent itchiness. The only relief is the cool air from the snow, which exposes and pushes the tributes out into new land.
In the tundra, there are Polar Bear Mutts that have been taken to an extreme. They walk on their hind legs with foot-long claws that hang down at their hips. They have terrible vision, but their hearing and sense of smell are impeccable. They are methodical with their killing. Also lurking through the arena is the Creature, a figure of which no tribute knows the origin. It’s reminiscent of a human but has none of its instinctual needs. It has a tall and slim body, which bends at strange, animalistic angles. When the Creature attacks, it’s nearly ritualistic. It haunts the tributes, driving them insane with fear.
The 72nd Hunger Games was the longest game in the Hunger Games history, lasting an entire month and a half. Its ratings were excellent and it’s considered one of the most terrifying, well-produced, and sophisticated games in history.
The point of this arena is balance. The winter land’s mutts, which cannot cross into the warm land, push the tributes inward. They’re forced into the center of the arena, which makes it easier for the tributes to go after each other. This then drives them back out into the snow, which becomes too cold and barren, thus bringing them back to the green land. The mutts in the center force them back into the snow for salvation. Therefore, the tributes must balance their time in each place to stay alive. The harsh differences between the landscapes force proximity between the tributes despite the vastness of the arena. In the future, this arena will be referred to as the Dichotomy. A contrast; two things that are entirely different—much like the Capitol and the Districts.
