Criminal Construct Android: This unit was made to look like some other common model, and in most cases uses the frame of a personal companion android. It was, however, upgraded and customized by either revolutionaries, insurgent forces, political outcasts, or common criminals. As far as being a civilian android character in the Epochian age, this is the most practical model for a post-apocalyptic world.

X-Men works best, I feel, when writers understand on at least some level that it's really basically a cyberpunk/biopunk horror story that just happens to also be a superhero comic.
X-Men is the story of the world entering a new epoch where any random person on the street might randomly get superpowers - ranging everywhere from green hair to mind control - simply because they happened to win(?) a genetic lottery as part of a cosmic process programmed into humanity in ancient times by ineffable star gods. All around you are people who are ostensibly still people, but are also inhuman entities with alien powers who are gradually developing their own subculture that tells them they are the future dominant species destined to replace mankind. Many of them are just normal folks... but just as many see you the same way ancient homo sapiens saw neanderthals.
X-Men is the story of fear and hatred rising in the hearts of men in the face of that new epoch. Corrupt humans and mutants alike use bigotry and xenophobia to divide the two peoples, pushing them into a war not just for politics, but for evolution and the planet themselves. Mankind begins altering themselves and building machines of death to keep up with the mutants, in the process creating a third race of humanity; transhumans and robots, that in time come to be no different from the mutants, superpowered monsters of society's own making that see the humans as flatscan wastes of genes at best, oppressors to be destroyed at worst.
X-Men is the story of humanity fighting amidst themselves in their senseless darwinistic war while their world tumbles through a swirling universe of terrifying eldritch threats. Out in the stars and spiritual dimensions are alien empires once like us now advanced beyond comprehension, legions of magical wonders and nightmares in equal measure, lovecraftian machine hive minds that eat planets, demons that feast on our sin, cosmic entities that have as much in common with us as we do ants.
And above it all, X-Men is the story of how recognizing each other's humanity, of embracing love instead of hate, may be the only thing that ensures even a hope of survival in the face of the unimaginable, mind-breaking horror of a world entering a new era whether it's inhabitants like it or not... or perhaps, the only thing that decides whether or not we deserve to survive.
The best X-Men writers are the ones who recognize this. Chris Claremont, Johnathan Hickman, Grant Morrison, Kieron Gillen, etc.. The writers who recognize that there's something profoundly and utterly, existentially TERRIFYING about what the series really boils down to (a self-defeating war between mechanical and genetic evolution with normals caught in the middle that may be the extinction of all three races) and reflect that in the aesthetics and tone by emphasizing a cyberpunkish vibe.
Emphasizing that this is a world where people - willingly or not - alter their bodies like mechanics alter cars and any random person you see on the street might be a mutant or Sentinel or something that can kill you with a look, and that random person is probably hiding from something even worse that wants to kill them just for being born.

after Binah's Suppression in LobCorp she tells X that she thinks she and him are similar - "We are the mutants this epoch has created. No, let's say that we are the new generation of humanity, fit better than anyone to live through this age." What I think she's getting at is that they're both seemingly cold people, Binah with her sadism and X with his ruthlessness, and that makes them better equipped than most to survive in the City.
oddly enough, I think of this concept again while fighting the cyborg encounter in Limbus, because of the machine asking "Do you love the City you live in?" and responding "You must become strong" if you say no. because the City is such a survival-of-the-fittest world that only the strong could love it, or that if you don't love it that's a sign of weakness for you, that's what it is implying. I also think of how in the flashback on Day 48 Carmen confesses to Ayin that she's not as strong as she lets on, and trusts him to carry on in her stead, presumably because she thinks he's a strong person. Though personally I would find her strength in her dedication to saving everyone to be very admirable...IDK it's just an interesting contrast to me.

I need to talk about something on Ark survival I really like
the ark is really just a colossal mothership hosting an ecosystem, every living organism in it are various clones from varied dates throught time, so you have dinosaurs, mammals, birds, and characters who lived through different epochs
Rockwell is one for example, an alchemist from the 19th century, his friend (arguably the main character), Helena is a palentologist from 2003, other two notable characters are Nerva, a roman who served in the roman empire in the conquest of Dacia and Mei-yin who's vaguely referenced to have lived in the yellow turban rebellion era (the latter two are sworn enemies)
despite having characters from various time periods, there's not an imbalance of tech between them as you'd assume, Helena being from our time is not ahead of any of them since she's from the "future" (we haven't even touched in Diana) if ANYTHING, the earlier the characters are, the more resourceful they are. Rockwell routinely teaches Helena about his findings and how to do chemical experiments with the lack of modern tech, Nerva used his knowledge of leadership to rise the first empire in the ark (more on mei later,)
All other characters, including background characters, taught one another things they knew from their time. Raia, an ancient egyptian priestess, teaches John Dahkeya, indigenous outlaw/cowboy, how to recognize the best grade of iron and copper, he in turn teaches her how to use a gun. All civilizations grow with the knowledge of how earlier humans lived without electricity, while the characters from the future brought more refined knowledge on certain topics like disease, antibiotics, physics and chemistry
Mei-yin is an outlier, every character in the story has a friendly duo, hers was Nerva who was pretty much her rival instead, she's reclusive, untrusting, dislikes men (queen) and her only real allies are the dinosaurs who are afraid of her. Her first contact with anything beyond her time was a flamethrower, ever since she became increasingly upset with any tool from the future, which other characters always deducted it was because she was too naive or stupid to grasp/understand (which is just Untrue, we see how incredibly observant she is).
The behaviour other characters had towards her, and their assumption towards her that she is simply unable to be reasoned with, too vicious, too violent, too untrusting and too stupid had her set to the periphery of almost any nation/civilization towards the game's story. Through the 10 years of Ark's ever updating story, she has never seet a single foot inside the walls of a city, out of her own volition
Until Diana came along
Diana is the character from THE future, she knows she's a copy, and the original person is dead, she knows what the ark is, because she was there when it was created. Diana was awakened alongside other survivors from her time, all whom awake in this wild land with no knowledge on how to survive on their own. I need to point that; there are multiple arks, not only one. There is an ark for the desert, one for woodland, etc; the ark that Diana and others awakened is one where the dome that protects it from outer space is broken, and the solar radiation has mutated all living things inside it (alongside being extremely deadly when exposed to-)
Mei-yin awakes in this ark not much after she reaches the control room of one Ark in a chase after Nerva, she is acidentally teleported there and immediately notices that the "sky is broken, and the sun is deadly", again just pointing how observant she is in general, she forces into submission befriends a mutant dragon and goes on her merry way. Acidentally stumbles upon Diana and their little group who are HORRIFIED as much as she is when seeing them, they invite her into her group and when she says no, Diana insists on her going in which she accepts (lesbian sign 1).
Diana explains that the earth was destroyed by an mineral that came from outer space (aka the 'element'), the element was a mineral but also a parasitic hivemind that bind to any living organism and grew. It grew so much under Earth's crust that it stopped it's rotation and turned it into a wasteland, the arks were their only hope of preserving human history and the life on earth. From this point, not only Diana is the only character Mei-yin feels relatively comfortable with, she also takes a pity on this group of people who don't even know how to tie their shoes because they had automatic shoe-tiers or something... She teaches them how to yield melee weapons, saddlemaking, how to make candle and soap with animal fat, but Diana is pretty much the only one that seems to listen to her, for as long as Mei refuses to adapt to them, they see her as archaic and useless.
It's important to note that not at any point Diana forces her to learn or to use tech, she slightly nudges Mei-yin but that's it, for the most part, she's just content to duel and go rock climbing with her. It's only after Mei-yin has significant trust on her that she's willing to pick up one of the cyborg armor tech and learn their ways and ONLY if Diana is teaching her (to which Diana comments- "She squints her eye and tilts her head when she's trying to understand something, it's very adorable..." LESBIAN SIGN 2!!!!!!!!!!!)
After Diana """dies""" (Got teleported) and Mei-yin was acidentally (again) transported to somewhere else- this time the ruins of earth, she gets to see what Earth really looks now which uh
Tumblr media Tumblr media
looks great!!!!! We can see her brooding using a mech that she learned to use on her own and even do minor repairs, again furthering that she was never dumb, just untrusting
An sweet detail that after they meet up again and kiss for the first time (Diana also beamed to earth), Mei-yin's story ends, at the beginning of the game, 10 years ago, she states that journalling brings her comfort and peace of mind as the world around her upset her. Diana's story continues and she mentions Mei-yin alot, which seemingly implies that she doesn't need journaling for coping, Diana is enough

I’ve been working on some DNAliens stuff recently and realized I don’t have a height chart with all of them together, just them beside human height for reference.  So, in case anyone wants to know a bit about all the DNAlien ocs I have, as well as their heights, here’s a little guide.  (Illustrations to be added over time; I’ve posted a few on my blog already)
Tumblr media
Now without further ado..
A quick guide to all the DNAliens that live/have lived on earth
Tselani (aka my self-insert with a separate backstory): Her three mutations are human, ancient ground bat, and kentrosaurus.  She lives in the dense cold forests between Canada and North America, and has the ability to reanimate corpses by combining what’s left of them.  After the village she cared for was destroyed in the War, she settled down in the Rocky Mountains as a suitable refuge from humankind.  She’ll occasionally reveal herself to or befriend them if they seem kind enough.
Jactol: His three mutations are gorgonopsid, anomalocaris, and DNAlien.  He lives in a deep cave system beneath South Africa, and has the ability to exhale a heavy noxious gas that will rapidly choke victims to death.  A misunderstanding between him and Tselani caused them to fall out of love.  After nearly being poached by humans, he grew a hatred and now vindictiveness for them, and will often toy with and torture any that cross his path before he inavitably kills them.
Aethra: Her three mutations are jerboa, cuttlefish, and DNAlien.  She lives in a large open cavern within the southeast section of the Himalayan Mountains, and has the ability to manipulate a creature’s desires.  She's like a cat lady but with humans, and keeps a minimum of three or four of them in her home at one time.  Unfortunately, she takes them against their will and many of them don’t want to be there.
Eracin: Her three mutations were screech owl, snow leopard, and Terrinu (a creature not native to Earth).  She roamed the Eurasian Steppe until settling down with Aethra, and had the ability to slow time with her heartbeat.  Her and Aethra kept humans safe during the War, but unfortunately they were attacked and Eracin laid down her life to give Aethra and the humans time to flee.  Unlike her lover, Eracin viewed humans as intelligent beings in their own right — on a similar level as her own kind.
Vremonl: During his brief time on Earth, he only took one mutant strand besides his own DNAlien one, a chausie cat.  He stayed around an ancient city in Egypt that sat near the Nile, and has the ability to morph additional limbs along his body.  He only stayed on Earth for several centuries to study various types of the planet's natural fauna before returning to Firsthome.
Helleia: Her three mutations are human, tussock moth, and locust.  She lives in the swampy everglades of Florida, and has the ability to infect living things with her hivemind that she can instruct with simple directions.  One of her favorite pasttimes is taking unsuspecting humans into her domain, luring them to herself with a proposed relationship.  She’ll occasionally take the time to build relationships with humans, but it's a facade; her abilities work stronger on those who have emotional ties to her.
Tserem: His three mutations are human, eastern brown snake, and arthropleura.  He is a wanderer and doesn’t have a definitive home, though he does tend to shelter in places where other DNAlien friends reside.  He has the ability to quickly expel any ailments or illnesses.  Tserem used to live in Central Europe with a beloved human, but he hasn’t stayed in a single place for very long since her passing.
Xr: Their three mutations are jaguar, toucan, and DNAlien.  They live in the craggy mountains of the South American rainforest, and have the ability to infect beings with disease by looking at them.  Xr has been living in the same place for epochs as he is older and isn’t interested in finding any other place to live.  He has a fairly large cult of natives who have been worshiping him and keeping him alive for generations.
Kraken: His three mutations are human, giant squid, and megalodon.  He lives deep in the Atlantic Ocean avoiding any human contact, and has the ability to generate and manipulate water and wind currents.  Ever since he was betrayed by the group of pirates he worked for, he’s been in hiding from humans.  However, he understands that not all humans are cruel and will act kindly towards them unless hostility is shown.
Corven: His three mutations are human, bold jumping spider, and plourdosteus fish.  He lives in an open cavern in the Mexican desert, and has the ability to bind two beings in an unbreakable oath that shuts down the oath-breaker’s internal systems for periods of time.  In his younger years, his rare ability gave him a quick rise to fame, but a quick rise to burnout as well.  He lives on Earth to hide from his fame, and later humanity as well, but will still give out binding deals to those who manage to find him.
Harneon: His three mutations are human, grizzly bear, and woolly rhinoceros.  He lives in the open grasslands of North America, and has the ability to stimulate muscle tissue to go above and beyond its limitations.  While his home is here, he often takes extended vacations to several other planets.  Rumor has it that he has several other ongoing relationships that he participates in on each planet, and Earth is his getaway from all of them.
Enercill: Her three mutations are human, jackrabbit, and killer lizard (a species not native to Earth).  She has the ability to hide her third mutation and mutate between two forms at will.  Enercill travels between largely-populated human cities, thriving off clubbing and nightlife there.  Underground, she’s made quite the name for herself, and people come from all places to.. spend time with her.
Siem: Her three mutations are human, sturgeon, and dunkleosteus.  She lives in the place humans call the Bermuda Triangle, and has the ability to magnetize her body.  Commonly she uses her ability to hunt down shining metals, and is an avid collector of anything with bright colors or shining properties.  Occasionally she’ll kidnap humans who are artisans and keep them on deserted islands like pets to make her more valuables.
Wraith: His two mutations are deinonychus and DNAlien.  He lives off-world, and has the ability to combust as well as be completely fire-resistant.  He was an avid supporter of the ‘humankind are subservient animals’ group during the War, and ruled over a large civilization before he was bested by Atnoir, who was fighting for the ‘equal rights of humans’ group during the War.
Atnoir: His three mutations are saichania, woolly mammoth, and human.  He lives near the arctic circle to steer clear of any humans, and his ability is heightened senses, which comes in handy when you’re the size of a small mountain.  Before the War, Atnoir used to live in Northern Europe where he took care of many human civilizations, and fought for them in the War.  However, he has banished himself to a human-less place after even his own humans turned on him.
Orner: Their three mutations are human, anaconda, and elasmosaurus.  They live between several uninhabited islands of Japan, and they have the ability to multiply their body like a single cell organism, and regroup.  They’re a trickster at heart who overall means no harm, but once in a while they take things a little too far.  They've befriended several humans, but usually gets them killed accidentally.
Orin: His three mutations are maned wolf, flying squirrel, and moray eel.  He lives in the mountains of Alaska, and has the ability to connect and disconnect beings’ consciousnesses.  He can cause both mass hysteria and deep emotional connections within the network of beings he connects, but has no way of controlling what actually happens.  His altruistic tendencies often backfire, and even his own kind are wary of him.
Arn: Her three mutations are human, roe deer, and stone pine.  She’s one of the few DNAliens to ever mutate with a plant; while it is possible it’s hardly ever practical.  She lives in a forest near the Mediterranean coast, and has the ability to coax plants into growing incredibly fast.  She's always been extremely docile and elusive.  Back when humans believed in benevolent mythical beings, she traded plants with people to better her large garden.  She still tends to it to this day in honor of her beloved, who courted her and helped her tend to the garden when it was still small.
If you have any questions about any of my ocs, leave me an ask!  I’m more than happy to rant about them, or draw you a sketch! Most of them have full background stories I plan to write one day, like Tserem’s and Tselani’s, but these are just quick rundowns of each

Barista Android
These popular variants of the service industry android worked for many popular coffee shop chains. They were exceptionally knowledgeable about the varieties of coffee, tea and pastries, masters at an espresso bar machine, and maintained a friendly, customer focused disposition even when overworked and the lineup was out the shop’s door.

All the Devils are Coming Out of Caves!
XueFeng
(Edited by Kaer)
There is no doubt that the genetic engineering now under way is of epoch significance and its future is immeasurable, but when we are complacent and blindly optimistic about it, believing that each mu of a field can produce ten thousand jin of grains and each fruit tree can produce ten thousand jin of fruits, that tomatoes can be bigger than watermelons and peaches can be sweeter than honey, that pigs can weigh a hundred kilograms after only half a month’s growth and skin and organs can be reproduced, that a new kind of medicine will satisfy people’s need for food for three months and needed species can be "cloned", and that diseases can be eradicated and cancer can be conquered to make people enjoy unlimited longevity, who would imagine that all the devils are coming out of the caves and that we might be facing doom at any time?
Genetic codes are the golden locks that maintain the relative ecological balance and stability of nature and that prevent the devils from coming out of the caves, but once they are unlocked, the following scenes are not just to scare you because they could happen at any time.
· You wake up to find that some people around you have grown tails and that their features and voices have changed because they have eaten animal meat from mutant genes.
· You call a friend who is thousands kilometers away, but only hear “chirp-chirp” noises coming out of your phone. You do not know that your friend has grown feathers and a beak from his mouth because he has eaten poultry or bird meat with mutant genes.
· You and your guests are happily drinking tea and chatting in the living room, when suddenly hundreds of cockroaches, bigger than eagles, crawl in from the kitchen because they have drunk water contaminated by specific genes.
· You are driving your family in your car, when suddenly the road ahead disappears as tens and thousands of hills rise before you. It turns out that potatoes have absorbed the soil nutrients contaminated by specific genes and are growing wildly like hills.
· You are sleeping soundly one night when you are suddenly awakened by the sounds of walls collapsing and sharp screams, so you open the windows and see hundreds of large rats, bigger than dogs, running through the yard and staring at you covetously.
· You come home from work and turn on a national television channel to watch the news, but no matter which channel you tune to, you find nothing, not even test patterns. In fact, the country has been infected with a gene that has rapidly mutated and spread, and everyone has gone mad and died within hours.
· You see plants growing wildly one day and learn that their reproduction and growth rates have grown faster than ants running. They spread over highways and bridges, climb mountains, float across rivers, occupy towns and cities, climb up tall trees and skyscrapers, and enter into caves and buildings, sweeping through to the the ends of the earth. In places where they reach, "From hill to hill no bird in flight. From path to path no man in sight.”
The devils are out of the caves and strange things will happen. The mortal world is no longer the one that we have known. People do not look like human, wolves are not wolf-like, and some plants grow wildly as some animals die instantly. At this point, any regrets are much too late.
Perhaps people believe that through the efforts of scientists from different places, we will be able to handle the issues of genetic engineering rationally and cautiously and will not act recklessly. We can only hope!
The point is that no one can be so sure that they have mastered all the secrets of gene interactions and can guarantee that there will not be gene hackers. Computer hackers can only crack passwords and disrupt programs, but gene hackers could push all of us into an abyss.
In order to protect nature’s ecological balance and in order to maintain our survival and development, we hope that governments and scientists who are involved with bioengineering will be extremely cautious. It would be better to suspend its development for a century than to act recklessly or to compete with each other for the most radical and extreme advancements.
We must avoid catastrophes that are waiting to happen.

Earth-18104 - B.C
Here the list of events that happened B.C. on Earth-18104. I had made another list of events, focusing only in the mutants, but this one include other people and events too, like the Okkara Age, Apocalypse, the Asgardians and a few things about Wakanda. I would had included the Eternals but I'm not so invested on them :/
This list also contains events happening to my OCs and doesn't follow Marvel Canon or the time-line established by the comics. This is more for my own entertainment than to anything else :]
The (N) after names indicate characters' birth, and the numbers indicate their ages.
List of Events of Earth-18104 (Resume)
4,540,000,000 BC -
• The Planet Earth is created.
• Shortly after it's creation, a Celestial crashed onto the planet, it's death contaminated the soil with its cosmic energies and laid the groundwork for Earth to become a hotbed of superhuman potential.
The Enriched and Okkara
• At this time, the first "mutants" (as they would be called ages later) begin to appear on the planet, long before humans. They called themselves "The First" or "Enriched".
• The Threshold, the first society of Earth, emerged.
• Having evolved into a prosperous society, the Threshold was attacked by the prehistoric Shi'ar, who sought to expand their empire. The Enriched and the Shi'ar entered into a war that lasted many years.
• As the years passed, the Enriched became weaker and fearing losing their home, they created a sentient weapon to defeat the Shi'ar from their own DNA: the Arkea bacteria, which infected the Shi'ar army and expelled them from the planet.
• However, most of the Enriched perished and the Threshold, the mutants' paradise, was destroyed.
• Without a home for her people, the mutant Grove, who had been seriously injured in battle, used her gift to change her physical form, transforming her body into small sprouts and then a form completely covered in bark.
• So she adopted a new name: Okkara.
• The Great Oxidation Event happened.

• This was the Old World.
• (Atillan)
• The Inhumans settled in Attilan, founded by their leader, King Myran, developing their civilization.
• (Wakanda)
• The five tribes of Wakanda are at constant war with each other until, one day, a warrior shaman named Bashenga receives a vision from the panther goddess Bast, who leads him to the Heart-Shaped Herb.
• Bashenga ingests the plant and it grants him superhuman strength, speed and instincts. He becomes king and the first Black Panther, the protector of Wakanda.
• While four of the tribes agree to live under the rule of Bashenga, the Jabari tribe prefers to isolate themselves in the mountains.
8,000 BC -
• The Hyborian Age came to an end. Most of the kingdoms of the Old World disappeared.
• Turan and Hyrkania later collapsed. Another cataclysm toppled the existing civilizations and formed the current Earth.
• As agriculture supported larger and more stable food supplies, human populations began to grow, leading to the expansion of villages and the development of new technologies.

• Their leader, Baal of the Crimson Sands, found the baby crying and recognized the potential power in the child. Baal raised him as his own son.
3,583 BC -
• As Apocalypse (11) grew, he surpassed the other members of the tribe in intelligence and strength, which made him feared by everyone except Baal, who raised him to believe that only the fittest, the strongest, the most relentless and merciless, tested by suffering, he would and should survive.
• During this time, Egypt was ruled by Pharaoh Rama-Tut.
• While her siblings grew to he schoolars, as Kailash was expected to inherent his father's position, princess Etana of Okkara grew to be a skilled warrior and the strongest of her family.

• Later, Baal took him to a sacred cave to complete his coming-of-age ritual. However, the cave entrance was blocked by a landslide, trapping them underground.
• The two wandered in the darkness for a week until they found the remains of a metallic chamber, which many believed to be where Rama-Tut came from.
• He explained to his son that Rama-Tut was not a god, as many believed, but a man, who had arrived in Egypt on a Sphinx; and that he believed that Apocalypse was a conqueror, whose coming was foretold in ancient prophecies, and that his son was destined to overthrow Rama-Tut.
• After Baal died from lack of nutrition, Apocalypse, whose mutant physiology kept him alive, managed to return to the surface after a month of digging and decided to fulfill his destiny of defeating Rama-Tut.

She told him that the two were different, they were special, Enriched with a special gift, and that they should rule over the weaker like Rama-Tut.
• Over time, they became closer, forming a bond of camaraderie and Etana taught Apocalypse how to fight and speak her language, the two shared food and planned to take Egypt in the future.

• Even taken by surprise, Apocalypse (23) and Etana (28) defeated everyone and freed Rama-Tut's slaves, who destroyed the city and fled.
• While Etana freed her people, Apocalypse came face to face with the pharaoh, who revealed himself to be a time traveler from the distant future.
• Tut knew them as two of the most powerful mutants to ever exist and who were destined to rule the world. He offered to make Apocalypse his heir if he would swear loyalty.
• Apocalypse refused so Rama-Tut shot him with a gun, leaving him for dead. Apocalypse, however, survived one more feat thanks to the sudden emergence of her mutant immortality and mass change. He cut off Tut's head and declared himself lord of Egypt, taking the name Apocalypse.
• Etana, having imprisoned Ozymandias (49) and his soldiers, found Apocalypse, who she grew to consider a brother, close to his last breath. She debated on killing him herself and free him from the pain.
• However, Apocalypse stopped her, affirming that he would not die yet.
• So Etana tool him to the Pharaoh's Sphinx, where he claimed all of Tut's secrets were.
• Ozymandias tried to stop Etana from saving Apocalypse's life and was thrown into the chamber's by her; the strange technology transformed him into a sand-like being who could see the future almost before it happened and would record the Okkari achievements over time as his scribe.
• At dawn, Apocalypse emerged from the Sphyx a new man, with Etana of Okkara and the submissive Ozymandias at his side.
• As the Pharaoh's servants bowed before him, Apocalypse dismissed them as a weak and loathsome people, declaring that he would return when the desert sands buried them.

• For hundreds of years, she watched her family's descendants rule Okkara and stood by the throne, waiting for the day when mutants would take over the planet that belonged to them again.

• After Apocalypse's departure, Etana was left with what was left of the Enriched, still as their Guardian, she led her people away from the island, looking for a new home.

• Just a few months after her new brother's birth, she made an alliance with the Kingdom of Heven when they waged war against Asgard.
• Meanwhile, despite the anger he felt towards his father, Vidar (251) still loved his kingdom and did not wish his little sister Aldriff any harm, so he told his father and Frigga of his sister's plans.
• Odin, who was already realizing that his daughter Hela's ambition had grown a lot and, together with his tremendous powers, tried to stop her from hurting his family.
• Hela then finally tried to take the throne, opening the way for the Queen of Angels and Heven's warriors to invade Asgard, forcing Odin, Balder (20) and Vidar to face her. At the end of the battle, the Allfather defeated her and imprisoned her in the kingdom of Hel.
• During the battle, Aldriff and the newborn Tyr were kept safe in the castle, however, they were found by the Queen of Angels, who kidnapped Aldriff, knowing that she was the heir to the throne, to blackmail Odin into surrendering.
• He refused, and the Queen apparently killed Aldriff before fleeing.
• Heartbroken and furious at his daughter's actions and all the losses he had suffered, Odin used his powers to cut off Heven from the other Nine Realms and Yggdrasill. He then decided to bury his family's true history and pretend it never existed.
• To make sure the truth would not escape, he expelled his firstborn Vidar, accusing him of conspiring with Hela to take the throne.
• Unbeknownst to her, after the Queen of Angels ordered baby Aldriff's corpse to be disposed of, the queen's servant Loriel, who was tasked with doing so, discovered that she was still alive and raised her as one of the Angels under the name by Angela.
602 BC -
• At some point, the gods of Asgard were so afraid of the wolf Fenris that they decided to shackle him. However, Fenris was so strong that he could break any chain they put on him.
• The dwarves were paid by the gods to construct a magical ribbon, Gleipnir, from the roots of a mountain and a woman's beard, and the gods asked Fenris to let them tie him with Gleipnir as a game.
• But Fenris sensed the fear in the gods and knew they were trying to deceive him. He then agreed to be tied up if one of the gods agreed to put a hand over his mouth, just in case.
• Tyr Odinson (103) was the only god who agreed. As soon as Fenris understood that he was trapped, he ate Tyr's hand.
• Thus Fenris was chained and will remain so until the day of Ragnarok. After this Tyr would be known as the Wolf's Remains ever since.
564 BC -
• Thor Odinson, the God of Thunder, is born. (N)
• With the apparent death of his daughter Aldriff and the exile of his other children, Thor was chosen as heir to the throne of Asgard by his father. Soon after his birth, Odin made his other children swear never to tell Thor about their lost sisters.
• While all of his brothers agreed immediately out of respect for their father, Tyr (140) hesitated.
563 BC -
• Loki is born, son of Laufey, king of the Frost Giants. Because of his size, he is left to die in Jotunheim by his father. (N)
• (Battle of Tønsberg and Jotunheim)
• The Frost Giants of Jotunheim attempt to conquer Midgard, beginning their invasion in Tønsberg, Norway, using the Coffin of Hell to freeze humans.
• The Asgardians and Eternals hear about the attack, assemble their army, and prepare for battle. Odin, using the Bifrost, leads the Asgardian army to Jotunheim in order to fight the Frost Giants, repel their invasion, and protect Midgard.
• They manage to force the Frost Giants to return to Jotunheim, where Odin discovers an abandoned baby Frost Giant. He adopts the child, names him Loki, and raises him alongside his other sons, Thor, Hermod, Honir, Tyr, and Balder.
• He later negotiates a truce with the king of Jotunheim, Laufey, forcing the Frost Giants to give up their source of power, the Coffin of Ancient Winters. Odin takes the coffin and places it in his vault.
552 BC -
• One day, Odin tells his sons Loki (11) Thor (12) about his success in the battle at Jotunheim, and that they were both born to be kings, just like their brothers.
531 BC -
• As Thor grew, he became more and more powerful, becoming Odin's favorite son, along with Balder, the brother to whom he was closest. Over the years, his brothers, especially Loki, began to feel jealous of him.
• When Thor was young, his father took him to Asgard's treasure room and showed him Mjolnir, the hammer that his sister Hela wielded, and that would one day be passed on to Aldriff. Odin, however, overshadowed the story of the hammer, telling his son that one day he could wield it if he was strong and worthy enough.
• Unbeknownst to him, Loki was listening to the conversation and went to tell their other brothers. While the others let this slide, not wanting to contradict the Allfather's word, Tyr (173) was resentful.
• Seeing that Thor would become the new defender of Asgard, replacing Tyr in that role, he decided to move away from his family, only appearing when Asgard was in danger.
• After this, Thor struggled to become physically strong enough to wield the hammer and was responsible for many heroic deeds.
522 BC -
• One day, Odin sent Thor (42), Balder (202), and Sif on a quest to teach Thor what it really took to wield Mjolnir, which was a pure heart.
• Finally, he managed to lift the hammer, becoming the God of Thunder.
500 BC -
• The Wakandans begin to build taller buildings in the Golden City.
369 BC -
• One day, the Norns, the three Asgardian goddesses who oversaw destiny, had a vision that the death of Balder the Brave (355) would help trigger the coming of Ragnarok, the destruction of Asgard and its inhabitants.
• Therefore, the Allfather ordered his wife Frigga to make Balder invulnerable to harm.
• Before allowing her to cast the spells, however, he accused Balder of treason, as during a battle with the Frost Giants he had deserted the fight to place a bird that had fallen from its nest, back with its mother.
• Odin ordered his brothers Tyr (336), Hoder (355), and Honir (350) to shoot arrows and throw spears at Balder, but the projectiles were stopped by an eagle and a plant.
• Seeing that Balder did not waver, Odin was happy that his son was the bravest in all of Asgard and decided to grant him invulnerability.
• Frigga cast spells that would protect Balder from harm caused by anything living or inanimate while he was in the Asgardian dimension; however, Balder remained vulnerable to the mistletoe.

Turtle Club Newsletter: Mutant Mayhem
Final thoughts on Sophie Campbell's TMNT and X-Men's Krakoan Age.
And programming notes Well, it’s June, folks, and a lot has happened in the world of comics. This week I’ll be talking a bit about the resolution of two mutant epochs in IDW Publishing’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Marvel’s X-Men. The First Krakoan Age has ended as has Sophie Campbell’s time as head-writer and president of Mutant Town in TMNT. Before that, some notes on the near…

Weekend Top Ten #637
Top Ten Mutants in Film & TV
Okay, so right out the gate I’m going to make a confession: I’ve not really read many X-Men comics. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve read comics with X-Men in them; I’ve just not really read that much actual X-Men if that makes sense. So whilst I really like the concept of X-Men, and many of the stories, and many of the characters, it’s more or less all come from other media (or, y’know, other comics where Wolverine is in the Avengers or something like that).
So what this list is, really, is the characters that have popped for me across other media. And, let’s face it, that really accounts for two things (or maybe two-and-a-half): the Fox-produced X-Men movies – stretching from 1992’s original X-Men animated series, through the Fox-produced movies beginning in 2000, up to (I suppose) The New Mutants in 2020, and culminating in this year’s superlative resurrection with X-Men ’97, by way (of course) of the two Deadpool movies. Yeah, okay, there have been other X-Men thingies in the meantime (X-Men: Evolution, say, which I watched a little bit of, but which I mostly remember for its goth Rogue), but really these are the things I’m basing it on. Which movies and TV programmes have the best mutants? Which non-comics properties have produced my favourite X-Men-and-women-and-therotically-non-binary-people-like-Morph-in-the-new-show-but-I-guess-he’s-not-on-this-list-so-it-doesn’t-really-matter.
Anyway, despite being a cheat and a charlatan and obviously not a proper fan, I love the X-Men. I love their general superhero team dynamic; the basic, old-school appeal of Professor X’s X-Men versus Magneto’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. But I also – of course – love the nuance and allegory the story allows; how the mutants themselves, as a disenfranchised and distrusted distaff population, could be seen to be Blacks in America, or gays, or trans, or – flippin’ ‘eck – Jews and Palestinians, depending on how you squint. When I first came across the X-Men, it seemed like Stan Lee and Jack Kirby were specifically tying their (ahem) two white characters to Martin Luther King and Malcolm X; the community leader preaching non-violent acceptance and integration versus the leader who believed that their repressed and abused minority could not gain rights without violently seizing them from the bigots in power. That allegory is not so clear cut, and one of the wonders of the premise is there are so many ways you could read or interpret it; X-Men ’97 is spectacular in the way it appears to be addressing modern concerns, although I suspect any time you read/watch X-Men you’d think “oh, this is about now.”
Where was I? Oh yeah, my favourite mutant characters from X-Men or whatever; except, y’know, more based on films and TV because – as I’ve said – I haven’t read as many comics as I’d have liked.
Tumblr media
Wolverine: yeah, pretty basic, but whatcha gonna do? The taciturn, gravelly drawl of Cal Dodd in the animated series is one thing, but really the heart and soul of Logan is Hugh Jackman’s barnstorm, epoch-defining, twenty-four-year-long run playing the character. His physicality, his screen presence, his badassery, but also his humanity, his warmth, his empathy; a man at war with himself who just wants peace, but is compelled to keep fighting. There’s a reason Wolverine became the most popular X-Man in comics, and thanks to the tremendous portrayals we’ve had elsewhere, he holds the same accolade in film and TV.
Ms. Marvel: oooh, controversial! The excellent Ms. Marvel TV series somewhat shockingly declared Kamala Khan to be a mutant, rather than the Inhuman of the comics (a decision that has made its way back to comics, too). So she definitely counts, even if she’s not (yet) an X-Person. But Iman Vellani’s super-charismatic, loveable portrayal ensures Kamala burns off the screen, a font of energy and optimism.
Deadpool: this really is down to one man: Ryan Reynolds, whose portrayal in two movies (we do not speak of Origins) is so iconic that it doesn’t just define the character for most people, but it’s also an exaggeration and enhancement of Reynold’s own comic screen persona; who else could be Deadpool now? He’s sardonic and funny, he’s violent but also often kind, and he breaks the fourth wall in tremendous ways.
Jubilee: I really loved Jubilee when I was a kid watching the animated series; I was kind of annoyed that she didn’t feature much in the movies. The classic “kid-appeal” entry-level character, she was younger than her teammates and offered an uneducated lens through which to view the X-Men’s world. Plus she’s sparky (literally), funny, courageous, and a bit of a goof. And, frankly, I’ve always loved her yellow coat.
Magneto: ah, Magneto; one of the most interesting and complex characters in all of comics. Yes, he’s a bad guy; he’s done bad things to good people, he’s definitely killed, and he’s caused innocents to suffer. But he does have a sympathetic core, fuelled by tragedy and a righteous sense of “never again”. We all know how great Ian McKellen is, but let’s tip our hat to the performances of David Hemblen and Matthew Waterson in the animated X-Men and X-Men ’97, showcasing all the nuance and complexity of a great Shakespearean actor. Also: the bit where he escapes from prison in X2 is mint.
Professor X: a lot of my love for him here is just down to listening to Patrick Stewart’s authoritative brogue. He just sounds like he’s in charge, yeah? Whether it’s on a starship or in a school. The First Class prequel movies added a lot of the complexity and ambiguity to the character that was present in the comics (and, I guess, the animated series), fleshing out his Optimus Prime-esque moral certitude.
Rogue: ah, sugah, how mucha this is just down to my likin’ for Lenore Zann’s voice actin’? Rogue in the show is super cool, an unstoppable powerhouse with a wit and a mouth and a ton of opinions. Her relationship with Gambit was an ongoing comic delight that also offered some heart; and, by god, how that developed in X-Men ’97… Zann gives a phenomenal performance in the sequel series. I don’t want to forget Anna Paquin’s turn as a more tortured, less outspoken Rogue; taking the place of the younger audience surrogate characters like Shadowcat or Jubilee, you get the impression she might be on the road to full Carol Danvers-level powers, but she ain’t there yet, honey.
Nightcrawler: mein freund, I could talk about the coolness of Nightcrawler – his design, his accent, his powers, the way he reconciles his faith with the world he inhabits and the prejudice he’s faced – but let’s just distil it to its essentials. Like Magneto, he has one of the greatest, coolest, most impressive comic book movie scenes of all time; the opening of X2. I still have no idea how they did that twenty years ago.
Gambit: his girlfriend may be called Rogue, but Gambit is a rogue; a loveable cad, a jack-the-lad type, a gambler and a grifter and someone with – to coin a phrase – a lot of red in his ledger. I used to love his style (another cool coat!), his accent, his weird black eyes, and his brilliant relationship with Rogue. I really rooted for those guys, y’know? And then X-Men ’97 happens and – as my next mutant would put it – oh my stars and garters.
Beast: Kelsey Grammar is, I have to say, pretty spot-on casting for the officious, academic, and loquacious Hank McCoy; although I don’t think he quite captured his sense of fun. However, the definitive Beast – and still the voice I hear in my head – is George Buza. He’s smart and funny; of course I gravitated towards him as a nipper. Shout out to tomorrow’s Lex Luthor, Nicholas Hoult, who gives Hank a good deal of pathos in the First Class era films.

Bestial Human Owl Hand drawn Ink art by William McAusland, writing by Colin Chapman
Quiet, patient, and coldly predatory, bestial human owls make others uneasy and terrify vermin of all sorts, including mice-men, rat-men, and others derived from such common owl prey. Although myth has it that they are wise, this is far from accurate; their enormous eyes occupy much of their cranium, resulting in a slightly smaller brain than some other bird-men. The disquiet they cause, along with their frightening natural weapons, means that they are rarely accepted into human communities, even if accompanied by humans or human mutants — at least unfamiliar ones who can vouch for the dangerous looking owl-man.
