My Wakanda Forever Review
Tumblr media
Spoilers under the cut!!!!
First of all can I just say the tears were falling from my eyes, the tribute given to Chadwick Boseman was absolutely beautiful, from the silent marvel opening to the gorgeous funeral it was just all two real and for someone whos grandma died the same day from the same dease it just brought me too tears. Putting my own life aside the absolute beauty of wakanda was breathtaking, while the first movie will always be near and dear too our hearts just having a closer look at the country of wakanda was truly impressive and something we didn’t preaveoulsy get to see. Oh and don’t get me started of the absolute brilliance of Talokan, so shiny! Now fangirling over detailed locals aside Ryan Coogler really took this franchise by the horns and made something of the less than ideal circumstances. The entier movie was just so well written and was very accurate (as he could be) to the comics I used to read, And I know I know The supposed romances between several characters felt real unfortunately it’s just shipping dreams, I mean the hunky indigenous king of talokan and the brainy yet beautiful queen of wakanda, Someone give me that Fanfic! But because of the circumstances in the movie I doubt that that ship will ever come to fruition. The introduction of riri williams was amazing (also just wat to point out that the actual government didn’t even pay her for her work, typical!) Idc what the men who watch the movies feel more black girls in stem is a win to me. Oh and queen ramonda was truly amazing showing her might infront of the UN Litreally Chills. Once again accompanied with an amazing soundtrack.
All and All this was a beautiful tribute to a great man, amazing storytelling, Namors Pecs and Mbaku’s thighs made for a wonderful viewing experience.
100000/10 would watch again
Thanks for reading
Yours Truly,
Afro
P.s, RIP Chadwick

literally nobody asked for it, but here's my list of saltburn essays that i've slowly been drafting over the course of the last week which WILL be required reading for anybody trying to engage with me about this movie. my very personal saltburn 101 syllabus just dropped
A Wolf in Deer's Clothing: Saltburn's Attempt at Innocence
an examination of party costumes and our character's last attempts to masquerade as something they're not: felix—an angel, all-forgiving and all-knowing, something to be worshiped; and oliver—a prey animal, prey to class-divide, prey to saltburn, prey to felix.
thoughts about oliver specifically are loosely organized in my #bambi tag
A Midsummer Night's Mare: Farleigh Start as the Ultimate Victim of Saltburn
a farleigh character study, about the ways he was mistreated and manipulated at saltburn, about fighting to stay alive and the scars left behind by knowing when to give in
alternatively titled "QuickStart", may be adapted into a conclusive essay specifically focusing on oliver and farleigh's relationship
The Eye of the Beholder: On Saltburn's Voyeurism & Violence [working title]
how wealth and class pushes the catton's toward the volatile reality of being able to look, but not touch. on desire and the lack thereof, and portraying yourself as an object to be desired
may end up as two separate essays on wealth and aestheticism but i'm pushing toward a conclusive essay about the intersection of the two, which i feel is at the heart of saltburn
alternatively titled "Poor Man's Pudding: A Melvillian Approach to Saltburn's Class", again, may be adapted into it's own essay
Gender-Fluid: A Study in Sexuality and Saltburn's Desire to be Dry
a deep dive into the bodily fluids of saltburn and how oliver upsets the standard of men who are just so lovely and dry. on the creative choice to lean into the messy wetness of sex and desire and the audience's instinct toward repulsion
a celebration of the grotesque and an examination of why we would label it as such
least developed of the four, heavily inspired by @charnelpit's lovely post about the fluids in saltburn
if anybody is actually interested in any of these, i can work toward something closer to a finished piece instead of just bullet points and quotes in a google doc, but mostly this is so i can share my very brief takes on a multitude of themes in saltburn that have been haunting me
edit for people seeing this in the future: all posts about my essays are being organized into my #saltburn 101 tag if you’re interested in following these through to development!

Complaining abt Suicide Squad yet again but the fact that they have Waller exposing the alien community to space racist attacks and talking abt how she got to her position through deceit and being a terrible person and stuff is just. Ahsfiwueh JUST SAY YOU DONT KNOW WALLER.
Anyways literally the 3rd mission of the Squad ever (and the first framed as smth Waller picked and not orders from above) was the Squad discrediting and stopping a rogue vigilante who was only arresting POC and funneling white people into white supremacy groups (of which he was the most prominent member) in SUICIDE SQUAD #4. and it's explicitly framed as this mission being personal for Waller that she's hiding from the government bc its illegal like. Guys. Please why are we having her incite (space bc comics) racist attacks now
Also the whole "Amanda got her position through deceit and being a terrible person" NO. she KEPT her position through being shitty and playing complicated political games!!! She wasn't always that way like there is a difference and it is IMPORTANT ppl PLEASEEEE. In Secret Origins #14 we learn Amanda's backstory and she used to be a normal, caring person! Like even after she entered into working in government and politics she wasn't automatically morally bankrupt like please people. She was originally given control of the Squad by Reagan (*sigh* 80s comics...) to distract and get rid of her because she was so successful at pushing progressive social policy in Congress. Acting like she's this static pillar of evil is such a waste of her character and so fucking uninteresting and disrespectful to her arc it drives me MAD.
Like I am NOT saying Waller is all sunshine and rainbows, she fucking SUCKS (said w love <3) but like there's a human being there. It's a progression, she has a character arc like please, DC, please!!! They've fucked up Waller so bad and made her so opaque and uninteresting she can't even be the protagonist of her own story for fucks sake!
Like I don't know how many times I have to scream it until DC hears me or remembers but WALLER IS THE MAIN CHARACTER OF SUICIDE SQUAD. ITS HER BOOK. yet right now she's a cutout to be used as the villain wherever the writers please. Even in her book we get none of her perspective really displayed, no exploration of her thoughts with any kind of understanding of the role she traditionally has played and was made to play in the story.
#its like youre unable to root for her in any form. which is annoying bc shes actually awesome actually#also having her say “actually im the good guy fuck you'' w/o any actual deep analysis of her psyche or whatever while doing these things#doesnt count as development or showing shes 3 dimensional. its just having 2 dimensional waller say shes right when everyone is obviously#supposed to believe shes wrong#anyways i want real waller back please i miss herrrrrrrr#anyways hope mr john ridley has read secret origins no 14. i know its from 1987 but please guys please. my only hope#also it was a few months ago but i think they tried to push certain elements of a diff backstory in dream team and sorry but fuck that. and#any mention of another waller background like my eyes are closed sry. im a preboot truther#actually im just ignorant of most squad comics outside the original series. im gonna do a readthrough and become knowledgeable on other#stuff i just need to find time. so if im wrong then sorry if its smth factual and if you disagree with my opinion then uh sorry for ur loss#anyways shoutout to the time i had a nerd night w my one friend and she was asking me abt dc and said my favorite villains and i said waller#and silver swan. and she had a “yuck WHY” to waller and a ???? to silver swan. love shouting out my faves and explaining them to the less#informed. didnt say a number 3 but would probably be parallax ig. idk hes kind of slay. or maybe someone else honestly i like hal but waller#and nessie are blorbo level for me i could think abt them for hours#or maybe it wouldnt be parallax actually idk who my 3 would be. hes definitely up there but way below the other 2. maybe the cheetah#interpretation that i personally have. v different from the popular cheetah interpretation esp rucka vers actually. much closer to the pérez#and esp develops some subtext there surrounding barbara and the exploitation and theft of sacred cultural artifacts and pieces but also#like british colonization a lil bit#but i actually despise the cheetah that lives in my head but think shed be interesting to use narratively and see diana fight#vs the other guys who i find interesting and sympathetic and like for themselves#whereas my fave interpretation of cheetah can rot in hell#i got off topic here#blah#swishy rant#also disclaimer that w the main character ik dreamer is the main character of dream team. im talking more in general and that amanda should#always have a huge role as shes the main character of the squad and yet is treated like its villain and not its protag#sui sq

"starting sentences without a subject" is smth i love abt ur writing. at first it is a bit jarring (?) just bc i wasnt used to it but it really fits so well. i find myself doing it in my own writing and i have to go back and change it lol
Lol thanks! I toned it down because I kept getting messages about it, but messing with sentence structure like that can be a great way to convey ideas/mood/tone, and I highly encourage people to learn rules about grammar and then learn how to break them for different effects!

Suptober - Day 6;
Parody
To me, Dean is someone who takes holidays seriously, particularly the ones that gather family and friends together under one roof where they can enjoy each other’s company and eat some good food and be happy. Spurred on by the one line of his from Fallen Idols where he’s impersonating Abraham Lincoln, I like the concept of him parodying Lincoln every year, reading out the Thanksgiving proclamation before dinner. It’s corny, it’s cheesy, they make a hat out of construction paper and he’s had this fake beard for years now. But everyone loves it. The best part is that he substitutes God with various other characters from his favorite tv shows, books, and movies. That always gets him a laugh! 🦃

I survived my first viewing of Yessir That's Our Baby by clutching my mug and laptop in a really normal way that didn't damage it at all and only shrieking in fury about 80% of the episode and I thought I was fine but now I think I have to loop back around and cap for the culture. I might not survive it.

no no wait I have to keep being silly I'm supposed to be asleep but for anyone actually concerned about their run-on sentences (don't be, your meanings are clear and comma splices are in vogue), let me introduce you to
my lover,
the semi-colon .
This bad boy is the EPITOME of "get you a man who can do both." He's like a comma AND a period! If a period makes your sentences social distance in a grocery store and a comma makes them kiss with tongue, a semi-colon lets them hold hands!!! Two sentences, connected that sweet and perfect amount... He's the king of my heart, the apple of my eye, the California stop of punctuation, HEEEEE'S

Hewo,,,,I was wondering if you had any writings tips! Where did you learn your craft? Do you have a favourite author?
Ooh man, my answers to this are probably gonna be kinda disappointing ghfgd. I’m pretty much entirely self taught for fun and I don’t read as much as I wish I did nowadays. I like to try and match the way I write to the time period the scene’s setting is closest to. So a lot of my stuff ends up sounding flowery and old fashioned.
I’ve been wanting to find the time to start reading more because that’s one of the best ways to refine how you write, seeing what other people are doing. But for now, what I do is just look back at things I wrote a while ago and pick apart what I like and don’t like about it and what I wanna do with that in the future. It’s easier once you get some distance from something to look at it objectively.
I’m honored you’d think to ask but I’m truly the worst person to give tips bc I barely know what im doing gjfgd. I feel confident in writing character scenes with heightened intense emotions but everything else is a bit of a struggle. And I’m not even sure how to put into words what my process is even for the stuff I’m confident with.

I just realized the reason why that show about those gay space rocks has always bothered me so much. It’s all about achieving change and civil rights through civility and it punishes direct action(Bismuth). Which is wild from a show that HEAVILY borrowed from themes of colonization and oppression.
