All numbers are imaginary. Some are useful.
So, @lipshits-continuous (I like your blog very much!) was bringing to my attention someone who was, let's say, a little frustrated about having to learn "imaginary numbers". You know. They're not even real.
I don't want to write about that person specifically, I don't know them at all.
But.
My siblings in crisis.
There are no "real" numbers in this world. The act of counting is already an abstraction. If you have an apple and a pear, then counting them as two pieces of fruit is an act of forgetting all the properties that distinguish them and remembering only those that unite them. Same goes for two apples of course.
So the number 2 is already entirely imaginary. Made up. Nonsense.
This gets worse very quickly, by the way. You can't have negative apples! Sure, you can have positive fractions of apples, but I can assure you: Two halves of an apple do rarely make one apple, except when they are the two halves of the same apple. And even then: Having them cut up makes it impossible to rejoin them. Think about that.
Now you know where this is going, because let's talk about the so-called ""real"" numbers. Nasty little things. Have a look at the irrational numbers. First, there are comparatively tame irrationals: Algebraic numbers. These arise as roots of integer polynomials. You know, like our favorite, the square root of 2, the positive zero of X^2 - 2.
Did you know that the Pythagoreans believed that everything was in integer relation to each other. (For example: the lengths of a rectangular triangle could be 3-4-5, meanging one cathetus is 4/5, the other 3/5 the length of the hypotenuse.) And that when someone found out that sqrt(2) was indeed not in integer relation to, say, 1, they had him murdered? That didn't change the fact that they were wrong though. (This story is not true, of course, like all good stories. You could say: it is imaginary, but nonetheless an interesting tale to tell!)
And now, the non-algebraic, so called transcendent numbers. Like pi. We know (the abstract concept of) pi well enough to calculate the circumference of the observable universe up to the accuracy of a neutrino (or so they say, I'm not a physicist). We don't have to know it any better. We could quit at however many digits we know and that would be pi. Perfectly rational. Because if we are looking for """real""" numbers only, why should we ever even concern ourself with those nasty things?
Did you know that transcendent numbers make the vast majority of real line? Of course you do! Rationals are countable, integer polynomials are countable and thus are their roots. The real line is famously uncountable, so must be the transcendent numbers.
So. Our so called """"real"""" numbers are mostly non-precisely calculable numbers. (Arbitrarily precise, but not precise.)
Do you know what kind of numbers are used in electrical engineering? Me neither because I'm not an electrical engineer. That's right, complex numbers! Actual engineers have to actually work with the actually imaginary square roots of negative one.
Maybe Numbers aren't a thing of this world.
Maybe Abstraction is a thing of our worldview.
And maybe we can learn to cherish abstract math the way we learn to cherish abstract art: Not always a true representation of reality, but a thing of interest and beauty in itself.

DpxDc AU: Not all omni-lingualism works the same- Nightwing learns this the most awkward way possible.
Dick has gotten to know Phantom, who is constantly hanging around his brothers on various missions and the guy seems like a genuine delight. He’s very easy going, serious when needed and way over powered when it comes to dealing with mission crises. Duplication, ice, invisibility, time dilation (though Phantom insists it has to do with a god’s blessing for running favors and not his own power) like so much, and shit, Nightwing has even seen him easily switch between languages when talking to different heroes. Phantom never explains how any of his powers work, they’re just glad that his powers always do.
On one particular mission Nightwing asks if Danny can switch to a Romani so that they can shit talk without alerting the other team members. (He’s seen him switch to Arabic for Damian so like, why not?)
Danny explains that well, he probably can but normally it takes time and uh, circumstances for him to be fluent enough for conversation. (The circumstances Danny is referring to are that of life or death pt. 2 since that’s when he has the best control over this power.)
Now…Nightwing’s first and only experience with biology related polyglots was Starfire kissing him upon landing on Earth in Jump City. So Nightwing says, ok bet. What’s a little peck between bros?
Being kissed by Nightwing is not what Danny expected, but given the anxiety suddenly raising his blood pressure like a life or death situation would, it does in fact lead to him being able to speak Romani.
This is also the story about Dick learning that he just kissed his little brother’s new boyfriend.

Nonbinary Ichiji, genderfluid Niji, and trans girl Yonji.
Thanks to Judge, none of them have really had many feelings about gender. Ichiji doesn't really care what gender they're perceived as or what pronouns people use for them.
Niji is the same way at times, but at other times, they know you're wrong and will violently correct you.
Yonji always kept her hair a bit longer than her brothers, but she never thought anything of it, after all, her father's hair is pretty long and no one seems to give a shit, until one day Niji decides to tease her for it and call her Sister and it feels right somehow? Why does she like being called that? It's Reiju that finally cracks the egg because she knew all of her siblings were some type of genderqueer long before any of them did.
Actually, I'm really emotional thinking about them finding out what gender actually means for them and realizing they're uncomfortable in their bodies, both because of Judge and because of being perceived as men, while Reiju subtly helps them figure themselves out with little hints and advice without wanting to overwhelm them too much. And I just know that if they found out about Sanji being a girl they'd have the biggest crisis in the world, because they're angry they can't be free like her but also-- Maybe they're not as fucked up as they thought they were and this is actually normal. That being said, they're not supposed to be normal and experience gender in any way, so you can imagine their whole breakdown over it. But they end up figuring it out, it's alright.

WIP Wednesday Game (by @kedreeva )
It’s WIP Wednesday, time for a little accountability, sharing your work, and getting a kick in the pants.
Here’s how it works:
In a reblog of this post (so people can find you in the notes) or new thread (w/ rules attached) if you want to play on your own, post up to five (5) filenames of your WIPs; not titles, file names.
Post a snippet from one of them. Snippet must be words you wrote in the last 7 days. We’re posting progress here. If you haven’t made any, go make some and come back to play!
After you’ve posted, people can send you an ask with one of your file names. You must then write 3 sentences in that file. If the filename is one you can't share from (for example, an event or gift fic), write 3 sentences on it anyway, and then 3 more on another to share.
That’s it! You can invite others to join in, or just post. I’ll be searching the reblogs to find people to send asks to!
If you’re reading this, you’re invited!
If you see someone posting a WIP Wednesday Game snippet, send them an ask! Make them write.
Requested/Friend event mentions under the cut! If you'd like to be pinged next week, send me a message to ask!

Cyberwolf
Snippet from : Liam's BI crisis
Buck entered his apartment, letting out a relieved sigh at being able to sleep for the next few hours after a long twenty four hour shift. That and the fact he was still reeling from his first kiss with a guy.
Something he didn't even know he had wanted untill Tommy's lips met his own.
He had been in the haze ever since. This confusion because he wanted to do it again... and again and again.
Walking towards his stairs to head to the second level of the loft, he froze as a bag sat on his kitchen counter pulled his attention.
He frowned at the bag. That wasn't his bag. He didn't own a bag like that. He was carrying his only bag on his body right now.
Instantly the hairs on the back of his neck rose. Something wasn't right.
The aroma of a take out hit his nose.... was that.... Chinese food?
Buck slowly dropped his own bag, wincing at the loud thud it made as it hit the floor. He reached over to grab the bat he had stashed by the stairs slowly so as not to draw any attention to himself.
He could see someone in his living room area spawled across the couch..... whoever it was was sleeping? Faint snores just about reaching Bucks ears.
He grabbed the bat, walking towards the figure. He really wasn't in the mood for whatever bullshit was happening right now.
"Hey!" He shouted, bat raised.
Two things happened simultaneously. The sprawled figure jackhammered upwards, shouting a loud confused 'what' before sliding off the couch face first to the floor.
"Ow." The figure - no the boy - groaned, slowly climbing to his feet. Buck cleared his throat, alerting the boy to his presence but the bat still gripped tight in his hands.
The boys head whirled up to face him. Buck felt his own face grown confused and very exasperated, blinking at the blatant teenager that should be miles away and not in LA.
"Uncle Ev!" The boy shouted, sounding nervous based on the crack in his voice as he shifted on the spot with a small, just as obviously nervous smile. Blue eyes flickering between Buck, the bat, and the phone on the table.
"Liam......" Buck said, the smile on Liam’s face widening at being recognised. It had been three years since he last seen the kid.
"Please don't tell my mom."
And obviously, the kid was looking to have his other older sister kill him.
Tagging @chasing-chimeras @transdunbar @wolfboy88 @thiamsxbitch @ksbbb @rd-eternity and anyone else that wants to
(Sorry if anyone's done it already)
