hey guys I like seeing people go through intense painful physical transformations with an affect on their mental state that either makes them scared of them selves or forces them to do horrible things that also scare them and can I just say that werewolves are so underwhelming like yeah sure you get taller and turn into a buff ass furry boo hoo go cry about it like most of the time you're not even aware and it only lasts for a fucking night

give me shit like turning into a siren/merperson where they have to feel themself molting and their skin squeezing on their body as scales start to grow and they start mindlessly scratching every where from the pain when uh oh your legs are failing but you can't think about that now until whoopsie daisy your lower limbs are melting together and your pants are magically whooshed away once you're past the nakey parts also did I mention the wonderful possibility of growing fins everywhere and experiencing those tear through your muscles and skin whilst they grow on your back and arms and already painful and foreign feeling tail and also your vocal cords changing to be able to produce siren song shit in a way that makes your throat feel like its being mauled from the inside out oh yeah and also having your eyes fall out and regrown wouldn't that be a fun idea anyways vampires are about the same except a little better than werewolves bc they at least have the possibility of dealing with "the hunger" tm and way more weaknesses that can make them miserable like not being able to be in the sun or eat food anymore bc your body can't handle it one of the better examples ive seen is the one in ROTTMNT: The Movie, where (be warned of spoilers) characters are "possessed", so to speak, and this shit goes on

its a very good movie, highly recommend it (the sereis has two seasons, and I haven't found the movie off of Netflix) also blood and struggling to adjust to a now permanent mental impairment/disadvantage/damage in a sense of "you're not human anymore and so you now have to deal with [blank] thought processes" (eg. someone gaining dragon shit would grow an affinity to hoarding things, not noticing such until their home is incredibly cluttered with piles of shiny items and hating themself for doing something so "inhuman")

things that ive seen that fall in the good transformation category are: demons* birds work most of the time, but you have to give them a beak and shit. also the wings can't just grow out of them painlessly.** most fantasy based anthros, really.*** most mutations seen in TMNT shows (that shits known to be painful bc it alters your DNA mostly through science rather than the normal mystics) bugs *only horns and a tail? weak. give 'em goofy legs and a snout or some shit, spin in a few animal traits just for fun. mental side effects that are nice for these guys tend to be a sudden lust for darkness (or just a sudden intense lust) **I recommend something like their arms falling off, OR something similar to the process in Haibane Renmei (tw for blood and minor body horror). An alternate option that I haven't seen would be to have the arms morph into wings themselves, but none of that grow feathers and get little longer bullshit. Character should feel their bones changing, the flesh forming to create a new limb and feathers piercing their skin like needles. Yes feathers are regularly soft, but imagine having a hundreds of tiny pinprick like things poking out of you and getting longer.

***this does not include fairies and unicorns. The only acceptation for these is character having weird magic fluxes and this becoming an effect of such. for example, if character is becoming a fairy, they will feel themself being compressed as wings either grow from their back or are summoned in a blast of magic that basically cuts them open where the wings "attach" so to speak.

Meet the Cast : Sam

Sam is one of the main characters of City Chronicles.

He's a 17 year old gargoyle that formally lived in the past but after an incident he found himself in the modern day. He lives with his former best friend Willa and his current best friend Robin.

As a gargoyle, he has access to magic (Nature magic) and he's quite skilled in his craft; plus he enjoys practicing it. Due to being the runt of his family, Sam didn't meet his life milestones when he should've and forces against him caused him to get cursed to become a bloodthirsty monster when his negative emotions act up.

Sam is quite a timid character and a kind soul, preferring to keep to himself and not speak up but will help out those in need. He has a giant heart and loves being around his friends and is desperate to not loose them like he's lost others. He's good at keeping his negative emotions under check to not loose control but sometimes those emotions build and build and eventually burst. Being in his human disguise helps bury the emotions and forget who he truly is.

All Sam wants is to live his life and without more blood on his hands but fate always has a way of spinning things back onto him.

Toastystats preview: F/F vs. M/M tagging

I discovered something unexpected while doing stats comparing F/F and M/M on AO3. One thing I was initially looking for was whether M/M fanworks were more likely than F/F fanworks to tag dark themes or explicit sex acts. It seemed like yes, they were -- but then I found out that, more generally, M/M fanworks use more tags on average than F/F fanworks. And given that, it's not too surprising that M/M is more likely to use most of the common AO3 tags than F/F is (whether the tag is dark, fluffy, or otherwise).

Still, I found a few AO3 tags that F/F was more likely to use than M/M. And I sorted a bunch of common AO3 tags from "Most likely to be used by M/M" to "Most likely to be used by F/F", shown above. The middle line indicates that a tag is equally likely to be used by M/M and F/F. Some of the darker and more explicit tags do indeed seem to be further toward the mostly-M/M end of the spectrum, but some of the ordering surprised me. (E.g., F/F is more likely to use "Smut," while M/M is more likely to use "Plot What Plot/Porn Without Plot." And F/F and M/M are nearly equally likely to use "Trauma" and "Coercion.")

I have a whole lot more F/F vs. M/M data to share soon, but I have questions for y'all first about this data:

does the above visualization makes sense? I'm worried it might be hard to interpret, so if you're confused, can you share anything about why?

are you are surprised by anything about the data?

any thoughts/theories/questions this data raises for you?

A couple notes on interpretation: we shouldn't have to worry about the fact that F/F is often tagged when F/F is actually a background ship -- I tried to weed out all cases where the F/F or M/M tag of interest could possibly have referred to a background ship. Also, all of the above tags are used at least 1000 times on F/F works and at least 17K times on F/F and M/M combined... so these numbers shouldn't be *too* prone to the noise of really small numbers.

kdrama whump recs: found family/team as family edition

Found family/team as family is my favorite trope, and when it’s combined with whump it’s even better! So, without further ado, here are some of my favorite whumpy kdramas featuring these tropes! (This list is not a ranking!)

1. The Uncanny Counter (2021)

Age Rating: TV-14

Synopsis: So Mun is an orphaned high-school student who suddenly gains supernatural powers. Soon after, the local noodle-shop employees recruit him into their team of “Counters”, where he begins to learn of the evil spirits roaming around town. 

Notes: This was actually my first-ever kdrama! It’s a great blend of action, drama, and comedy. It also has one of the most unique “magic” systems I’ve seen, with the “Counters” each connected to a spirit in the afterlife. It’s also extremely whumpy, with a lot of comfort and care given to the characters. Definitely recommend.

2. Bulgasal: Immortal Souls (2021)

Age Rating: TV-MA

Synopsis: Dan Hwal has lived for the past 600 years as a Bulgasal—a mythical creature that feeds off human blood and is cursed with immortality. Eventually, he connects with his reincarnated family, along with a formerly immortal woman. 

Notes: This show is pretty complex and can get confusing at times. It’s also heartbreaking, but the characters make up for it! There’s a TON of whump for both characters shown in the GIF above.

3. Mystic Pop-Up Bar (2020)

Age Rating: TV-MA

Synopsis: Han Kang-bae is a young man with the ability to make people confess their deepest troubles with a single touch, but this power isn’t always a gift to him. One night, he meets the mysterious owner of a pop-up bar, a woman who must settle the grudges of 100,000 souls in order to gain a peaceful place in the afterlife. 

Notes: This show isn’t the most whumpy on this list by any means, but it still has a good amount! What stood out to me were the relationships between the main trio of characters and how close they become with each other over the course of the show. No spoilers here, but this drama does involve reincarnation...

4. While You Were Sleeping (2017)

Age Rating: TV-14

Synopsis: Three young adults discover that they all have the same ability: seeing the future in their dreams. As a trio, they work together to attempt to change these (sometimes terrible) visions and save each other from harm. 

Notes: Though this show is more focused on the romance between Jae-chan and Hong-joo, there are some great moments of found family feels between the main trio, sometimes including Jae-chan’s little brother and a different character who somewhat acts as a father figure. Pretty whumpy show that I absolutely adored watching! (Plus, the cast is STELLAR! I mean, Suzy, Jong-suk, and Jae-in together in a drama? It’s so good.)

5. Tomorrow (2022)

Age Rating: TV-MA

Synopsis: Choi Jun-woong is a young man struggling to find a job, but when he falls into a coma after an unfortunate accident, he’s offered a place on the Risk Management Team as a temporary grim reaper. Together, they help save people from s*icide.

Notes: Possibly my most favorite kdrama ever! It has more emotional whump than physical for the most part, but it’s so amazingly done. The main trio (plus another character, later in the show) have such great platonic chemistry, and even though they have conflicts, you can tell they all truly care for each other even after a short amount of time. (Rowoon’s acting talents are really highlighted in this show, as well as the other main leads!)

6. The Devil Judge (2021)

Age Rating: TV-14

Synopsis: This series is set in a dystopian version of South Korea, where the people live in chaos and corruption runs rampant. Trials are held through a courtroom live show aired on television, led by "The Devil Judge”.

Notes: This show is very dark, but has an interesting dynamic between the characters that evolves and grows over the course of the show. The characters are complex and imperfect, and though their conflicts are intense, it just makes the domestic moments so much better because of it. It has some good whump for the two main characters, and of course, Jin-young is an added bonus.

7. He is Psychometric (2019)

Age Rating: TV-14 

Synopsis: Lee Ahn is a young man with the ability to read the memories of any object or person he touches. He begins to train his powers in order to help solve crimes and get justice for the death of his parents. 

Notes: One of my favorite kdramas ever and a must-watch for anyone in the kdrama whump community. Fair warning, this show will absolutely shatter your heart, but it has such a great storyline with many twists and turns. This is a complex found family, and though the show does have a romance, it’s a really good one. Also, there’s SO MUCH WHUMP! Like in every single episode. It’s truly amazing. Jin-young never fails to amaze me with his acting.

14. I’m in the Mood For: Any fics where WWX submits to the Lans for cleansing in exchange for safety for the Wens. I read Decay by ante bunny and loved the premise, but wanted more focus on the consequences of the cleansing.

I love the theory that resentful energy can’t heal but can hold things in stasis, and thus WWX is literally being held together with resentful energy. Because otherwise how did he survive getting stabbed and dropped at great height and starving all without a golden core.

Link didn’t try to hide his anger and disgust as the pirate crew inspected the contents of the enemy ship. The loot must have been stolen from all over the Great Sea, and most of it should never have fallen into hylian hands. Link wandered the captain’s quarters, ignoring the man’s furious shouts as Gonzo dragged him back to their own ship. The enemy captain and his crew would provide a handsome reward back at Windfall, but Link was more concerned about the cargo.

The potted plant on the captain’s desk was none other than a shriveled Deku Sapling, identical to the ones Link had traveled around the ocean to revive with forest water. Link hoped that it wasn’t too late to return it to the Koroks. A birdcage in the corner of the room was so densely packed full of Morths that they couldn’t do anything more than blink at him with large, pleading eyes. Shattered pieces of Joy Pendants littered the floor, pulsing with melancholy energy.

The enemy captain and his crew were a nasty lot, and Link was glad to help rid the ocean of them.

“Link, you’ll never guess what I found!”

He ran belowdecks to find Tetra waiting in front of a glass tank taller than they were. “Don’t freak out or make any sudden moves,” she warned. “I don’t wanna spook him.” She stepped aside to let Link see for himself, and his jaw dropped.

Sitting in the tank was an honest-to-goddess mermaid.

Aryll was absolutely obsessed with mermaids, and Link had heard many of Grandma’s stories about the mythical creatures. They were often found by pirates and fishermen (in times when fish had been able to survive the ocean), who usually set them free after realizing their mistake. However, Link did remember a few stories where the mermaid had been captured and shown off as a prize from the depths. Grandma had always described them as pressing their hands against the walls of their enclosure and begging to be let out.

This mermaid was laying motionless at the bottom of the tank, facing away from Link and Tetra. No- as Link walked closer, he realized that this was a merman. He was slightly curled around himself, protecting his tail and hands. He didn’t stir at the sound of the young pirates, and if Tetra hadn’t said anything, Link would have thought that he was dead.

Link knelt in front of the tank, watching the merman closely for signs of life. “Hey… can you hear me?”

The creature shuddered, and Link counted that as ‘good enough’.

“Should we try to get him out?” he asked Tetra.

“Yeah, we probably should,” she said. “I think that lever over there is attached to some kinda contraption that should lift the net he’s laying on. Come help me with it, and hurry!”

Tetra was right, and they were able to activate a pulley system which slowly raised the merman out of the water. They ran to ease him down to the floor, pulling the net away so they could check for injuries.

Link started by the merman’s tail while Tetra examined his Hylian half. Link tutted as his eyes tracked loops upon loops of fishing wire wrapped tightly around his tail. The wire was thin but strong, and sliced through pink scales where it was most concentrated.

“It’s not pretty, but it should be easy to cut through,” Link announced.

“Wait, Link- it’s worse than you think. Come take a look at this.” Tetra’s voice betrayed underlying fury, and Link was quick to scoot to her side.

Link wasn’t normally one for queasiness, but he almost puked when he saw what the enemy pirates had done to the merman’s hands.

Instead of simply tying the wire around the merman’s wrists, the pirates had chosen an excessively violent method of restraint. The fleshy webbing between thumb and forefinger was speared clean through by a fishing hook, one on each hand. The barbed tips ensured that the merman couldn’t pull them out without damaging his hands beyond repair. Only then was the wire looped around the hooks, connecting his hands to each other and his tail. No wonder the merman was afraid to move- any amount of jostling would mangle his limbs even further, and he must have been in a lot of pain too.

Link muttered a string of curses that made even Tetra’s ear twitch, then reached for his adventure pouch. He heard the merman hiss, but he didn’t look up as he said, “Don’t worry, we’re going to get you taken care of.”

He pulled out a dagger, unprepared for the merman’s earsplitting shriek.

“Put the knife down, you idiot!” Tetra yelled, and smacked Link’s arm. “I told you not to spook him!”

“Ah, right! Sorry!” Link quickly set the dagger on the floor, then raised his hands to show that they were empty. The merman quieted, and for the first time, Link looked at his face.

Link wasn’t sure how long merfolk lived, but this one was young. He must have been a teenager, only a few years older than Link and Tetra. Violet eyes, burning with intelligence and distrust, stared right back at Link. The merman bared his teeth and hissed again.

“I’m not gonna hurt you,” Link said quickly, still showing his empty hands. “We just want to get you free from that wire and heal you so you can go home. Okay?”

The merman grumbled a bunch of garbled almost-words, then nodded. He remained still as Link picked his dagger up and prepared to cut the wire leading from the hook in his near hand.

“Tetra, can you hold the wire taut?” Link said, showing her where to hold it. He held the hook steady with one hand while the other positioned the blade in between Tetra’s hands. “I’m going to cut the wire now,” he told the merman. “Try not to move. I’m really sorry if it hurts more.”

The merman growled throughout the entire operation, but Link and Tetra managed to sever the wire and disconnect it from the hooks. Link carefully took one of the merman’s hands in his own to examine the injury.

“I think, if we pull them out at the same time, we can convince a single fairy to heal both hands,” Link said. “Can you grab one from my bag?”

Tetra placed a bottle beside Link, then made her way around to the merman’s other hand.

“Okay. I’m going to count to three, then Tetra and I are going to pull the hooks out. Then I’ll free the fairy and she’ll heal the merman. Ready?”

The others nodded.

“One.”

The pirates each took hold of a hook.

“Two.”

The merman took a deep breath and braced himself.

“Three.”

With one swift pull, Link slid the dull end of the hook through skin and webbing until hook and hand were no longer one. He tried not to look at the bloody, gaping hole between the merman’s fingers as he quickly uncorked the bottle. Tetra tossed her hook to Link as they watched the fairy swirl around the merman and heal his hands.

“All fixed up?” Link asked, lifting the merman’s hand for one last check. Tetra did the same, and the merman demonstrated that he could easily flex his fingers. The merman grinned and pointed at his tail, which was still wrapped in layers of tight wire.

“Oh yeah! Hang on a minute.”

Link and Tetra unwound the wire in no time, and the merman gestured for them to step back. The young pirates watched as scales and gills and webbing fused into flesh, and suddenly there was a normal, hylian boy laying on the net.

“Thanks for the help,” the older teen said, sitting up and checking himself for remaining injuries.

Link realized that the teen’s legs were crisscrossed with thin, lightly bleeding lines from the wire. “Oops, sorry about that. I have some extra potions back on our ship if you want to come with us.”

“Sounds good to me.”

Link helped the teen stand and launched into his chatty mode before they even left the room “I have a lot of questions, including but not limited to: how can you do that, why didn’t you change back sooner, and why did the other pirates even capture you in the first place. That can come later though. My name’s Link, by the way, and she’s Tetra. What’s your name?”

Whump Oc Concepts

Here are some whump oc concepts that I have for people to use :)

Whumpee and Whumper::

A rare mythical creature that has things like wings/scales/poisons or anything like that with expensive prices. Whumper finds an injured Whumpee and decides to keep them for that purpose only. Whumpee would want to leave, but they think it's better than living injured and possibly dead. (Stockholm syndrome type stuff).

A world where vampires rule over humans. Whumper keeps Whumpee, who is a human as a pet. They used to fight it, being there at all, but after awhile Whumpee starts to enjoy being there. They live with a prestigious vampire ruler that feeds them and keeps them alive. (Possibly also stockholm syndrome)

A mad scientist Whumper who works day in and day out with their other apprentice Whumper. They use people and other creatures as their test subjects which are their Whumpees.

A doctor Whumper who slowly poisons their Whumpee until they die/get incredibly close to death.

Whumpee and Caretaker::

An opposite doctor Caretaker who slowly finds out about the Whumper doctor who is poisoning and gets them sent to jail. They get Whumpee back to health successfully.

Two dragons one a Caretaker and the other a Whumpee. One was a neglected dragon and the other was a large powerful creature. The Caretaker takes Whumpee in at first due to pity, but then decides that Whumpee is nice and wants to keep them.

The pigeon keeper chronicles please, phoenix’s are one of my favourite mythical creatures and I just love how nikola is obsessed with them.

The premise for the series is Helen and Nikola are together post-series and Nikola has obtained a flock of pigeon-sized phoenixes and even smaller dragons. I'm intending this to be at least an eight-part series (might be more, I am not known from my self-restraint) of Helen and Nikola going through their relationship, with Nikola's flock in tow (Hence 'The Pigeon Keeper Chronicles'). The original few pieces are based on Whumpuary prompts and I've been building up to them. There's going to be love and fluff and angst and whump galore throughout this series.

Snippet from The Pigeon Keeper Chronicles Part 3 _

Nikola walked over to her and placed his hands gently on her hips, smiling at her and bending his head to kiss her gently. Helen smiled faintly at this, though she was still getting used to it, something she chided herself on.

"Then what is it?"

"Your flock."

Nikola drew back and eyed her warily.

"What about them?"

"They're causing problems, Nikola."

"Not for me." Nikola said, eyebrows drawing together.

"Well..."

That was true. Helen knew that she couldn't argue with that. The phoenixes and the dragons--though the dragons didn't like Nikola as much as the birds did--were well behaved when it came to her vampire.

It was everyone else that was having the problems. And he knew about it. But it was just like Nikola to be puzzled why anyone would see a problem if he wasn't experiencing it himself.

"Another fire in the gardens, Nikola. Another dispute with the residents. Another dragon in my tea."

"Oh, we certainly can't have dragons in the tea. The rules of the world must be snapping."

Nikola bent to look at what looked like a bulkier version of the cuff for the vampire shield, the phoenix on his shoulder shifting effortlessly so that it didn't fall off.

"Nikola."

"What are we supposed to do, Helen?" he cocked a brow at her. "We can't put them back where we found them--the other abnormals have most likely already finished claiming their territory. Putting them in a cage didn't work."

"It wasn't a cage." Helen said patiently.

Nikola gave her a look as he kept tinkering with his invention.

"You let residents adjust before judging them. Why is the flock different?"

"Because they keep setting my house and residents on fire."

"Come now, Helen, you've dealt with far worse."

The grin he gave her made Helen force her face into a scowl. She needed to have a firm hand when it came to dealing with Nikola. And when it came to his flock.

Nikola straightened again and faced her, smiling lazily now.

Helen found herself responding to that smile before she could stop herself and Nikola laughed.

"They're not improving their behavior. They may be wild animals, but they are also abnormals."

Which meant that they had a higher intelligence than their normal counterparts and should have improved their behavior at this point, considering how many corrections there had been.

All of the Sanctuary's residents needed to be in general harmony with one another and the phoenixes and dragons were throwing that harmony off. It may not have seemed like it was that big of a deal, but when it went on for weeks, that was an entirely different matter.

Favorite mythical creature: Dragons. Everything about them is cool. Dragons for different elements. Eastern vs western dragons. Dragons in human form. Falkor. So versatile.

Longest book series you've read: (Does that count if they're different series in the same universe?) Probably the Mortal Instruments series, and all related books, by Cassandra Clare. The Infernal Devices was one of my favorite series.

Playstation, xbox, or nintendo controller layout: I guess nintendo by default .... my first video game experience was playing mario cart on nintendo switch at marching band parties in college, and not much more beyond that.

Best time to get out of bed: 9:30. Late enough to make up for late nights, early enough to still get stuff done. Unfortunately, work gets in the way, so ideal time for work is 7:20
