We need to stop devaluing non-speaking communication.
I honestly believe that sign language should be taught in school. Non-speaking people aren't the only ones who benefit from it. Making the world a more accessible place helps all of us.

Can someone please explain the different terms for nonverbal. Like I knew there are two separate terms for being nonverbal and going into a nonverbal state. I think non speaking is one of the terms but I don’t want to use it wrongly. I saw a post a couple of month back explaining all of this but I can’t find it. I don’t want to offend anyone I’m just trying to understand as a fully verbal autistic myself.

It’s very kind of people I speak other languages with to assume that my slow comprehension and endless requests for repetition are as a result of us not speaking my first language, when in reality, my auditory processing is just complete shit.

Non Verbal Riz
Non Verbal Riz
Non Verbal Riz
Non Verbal Riz
Non verbal Riz who's dad is also autistic and so his parents recognized autism at an early age.
Non verbal Riz who got set up with an AAC super young and had access to tools that worked for him.
Non verbal Riz who had major language delays and has never spoken a single word.
Non verbal Riz who makes grunts and vocalizations and slowly but surely learns to use his AAC.
Non verbal Riz who gets bullied for being autistic and non speaking and has no friends.
Non verbal Riz who all the adults pity and treat him younger than his age.
Non verbal Riz who is at a different developmental level and needs additional supports but still deserves to be treated with respect and dignity.
Non verbal Riz who now has a single mom and faces challenge after challenge but gains confidence in himself because of his parents.
Non verbal Riz who makes friends with the Bad Kids and uses his AAC and becomes comfortable in his way of speaking and existing.
Non verbal Riz who is smart, sure, but also goofy, silly, mistaken, and diverse.
Non verbal Riz who is not a 'savant' who just exists and does his best.
Non verbal Riz who will always be viewed by others as his disability first.
Non verbal Riz who is defined by his non verbal identity for better and for worse and cherishes his AAC as his voice.
Non verbal Riz.

Note
your post about only communicating the minimum needed reminded me of the gricean maxims (concept in linguistics describing how people communicate)! your advice was very similar to the maxim of quantity :)
From the UPenn School of Arts & Sciences site:
Grice's Maxims
The maxim of quantity, where one tries to be as informative as one possibly can, and gives as much information as is needed, and no more.
The maxim of quality, where one tries to be truthful, and does not give information that is false or that is not supported by evidence.
The maxim of relation, where one tries to be relevant, and says things that are pertinent to the discussion.
The maxim of manner, when one tries to be as clear, as brief, and as orderly as one can in what one says, and where one avoids obscurity and ambiguity.

uh just cus u experience verbal shutdown does NOT mean u r semiverbal
semiverbality is not:
being unable to speak when anxious , stressed , tired or overwhelmed (this is verbal shutdown)
or
being unable to use most words or phrases when anxious , stressed , tired or overwhelmed (this is also verbal shutdown)
semiverbality is:
Tumblr media
stop misusing verbality labels
we will not engage with discourse on this topic as we do not have to spoons to do so
-Arson (a semiverbal alter) (it/xe) + Sorine gatekeeper (death/hate/flesh)

Speaking isn't the only form of communication! Just because I'm not speaking words doesn't mean I'm without them.

Me: tells person that using "going nonverbal/semiverbal" is the wrong word that you can't "go nonverbal or semi verbal"
Them: tells me they need scholarly academic articles to learn the difference with "proof " of the difference of " "being nonverbal" vs "losing speech" "

Can we PLEASE start teaching children about disability properly?? When I was little the school would have us watch a video every year, always the same video. It was about some kid who was autistic, liked trains, was white, was a boy, and fit literally every other autism stereotype.
These videos do not educate.
It had a bunch of 2nd graders suddenly claiming to be autistic because they dont like certain noises (some of them were definitely autistic, but I seriously doubt an entire gened class was).
Then once they met me, an actual autistic person, they said that I don't "look autistic". Why? Because the only representation of autistic people in that damn school was that stereotypical video!!
Teach kids about disability, by disabled people. Have wheelchair users teach children about wheelchair users. Have autistic people teach children about autism. Have AAC users teach children about AAC. Have people with tourettes teach children about tourettes. Have rollator users teach children about rollator users. Have feeding tube users teach children about feeding tubes. Etc.
If we started doing this, society would be much less ignorant on disability.
