oh my god Jess I just finished reading MetaMaus for the piece I'm writing on Maus and it's BRILLIANT. I'd definitely recommend trying to find it second-hand somewhere, because I got my hands on a super cheap copy and it's such a treasure trove. There's so much in there about his family and he explains all of the creative choices he made in Maus so interestingly, it's a great read. Plus it comes with a DVD that has a digitised copy of the original book and all the original interviews with Vladek (among other stuff) - literally a dream for writing analysis, it's wonderful

Ohhh I envy you so much, the portuguese version (which is usually cheaper) is so expensive that I didn't even bother to search for the english one. Maus had such a huge impact on me that even this day is one of my top recs when people ask me about good books, it's so powerful, painful, infuriating, lovely and addictive, but there were moments I had to put down the book to breathe.

I don't know the purpose of your piece but if you are interested in the theme there is the book called Olga by Fernando Moraie about the german-brazilian political activist Olga Benario Prestes, she had one of the biggest files in the Gestapo, she was persecuted for being jewish and communist, she had her baby daughter taken away before they murdered her in a gas chamber.

being brazilian too of course it had an even bigger impact than Maus, but those two book are in my top 5 for life!!!!

9.11.1938-9.11.2022 Gerade lese ich wieder sehr viel über die Zeit vor 100 Jahren und beyond. Zuletzt die Geföngnisbriefe zwischen Olga Benario und Luis Carlos Prestes. Für mich bedeutet Erinnern auch zu versuchen die Prozesse der Geschichte zu verstehen. Rechte Angriffe nehmen zu und rechte Ideologien sind in der Mitte der Gesellschaft angekommen. Há 75 anos, morria, em uma câmara de gás de um campo de extermínio nazista, Olga Benário Prestes. A comunista judia foi entregue, grávida de sete meses, aos alemães nazistas pelo governo Vargas, quando este, às vésperas do golpe de Estado que o transformou em ditadura, flertou com o fascismo e perseguiu comunistas, judeus e homossexuais.

Olga Benario was born in a Jewish family in Munich, Germany, in 1908, and joined the Communist Youth Organization at the age of 15.

In 1934, she was entrusted with guaranteeing the safe return of Communist leader Luís Carlos Prestes to Brazil. While posing as husband and wife, the pair fell in love.

After the failure of the Communist revolution the next year, Benario and Prestes were arrested and separated from each other. As an act of personal vengeance against Prestes, Getúlio Vargas (president at the time) had Olga, seven months pregnant, deported to Nazi Germany as a “gift” to Adolf Hitler.

“I fought for the just and the good, to make the world better. If I must now say goodbye, I promise I won’t give you any cause to be ashamed of me, not to my last breath. […] I will stay strong and determined to live to the last. Now I must sleep to gather strength for tomorrow. I kiss you both one last time.” (Olga Benario Prestes’ final letter to Luís Carlos Prestes and their daughter Anita Leocádia).
