What is, in your opinion, the worst Disney animated film?
It's Wish. Not just because that's the hot seat that I'm sitting in right now, but because just about every other Disney animated film pulls ahead of Wish in every other category.
Dinosaur (2000) had better voice acting than Wish.
Chicken Little (2005) had clearer and more compelling character motivations than Wish.
Brother Bear (2003) had more meaningful sidekicks than Wish.
Home on the Range (2004) had a more exciting story than Wish.
The Black Cauldron (1986) had better scene design and world building than Wish.
Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) had a main character with more of an impact than the main character inWish.
Oliver & Company (1988) had better songs than Wish.
Pocahontas (1994) at least included a purpose behind introducing the "topic" of diversity to the story through the characters (even if it was poorly executed given the context) while Wish had no discernible purpose for introducing it through their characters.
Even Disney's worst other movies have more going for them than Wish: usually where they failed was reading the room and picking an audience that would like it. Like, nobody was really interested to see Atlantis: The Lost Empire, or Oliver Twist but with cats and dogs.
Which makes it more painful: audiences wanted to see Wish. Everybody likes a new Disney musical fantasy-adventure movie. And this was supposed to be a celebration of everything people love about Disney, so that would've added appeal to the audiences of Wish.
But Wish took that and totally dropped the ball.
If you were hoping for a less-recent, broader ranking of Worst Disney Movies:
Wish
Strange World
The Black Cauldron
There ya go!

Gerard Horan. British actor who often plays detectives on TV. These photos range from 2002-2013. I like to see wearing something other than the typical detective suit and tie and playing roles other than that.

I'm watching every Disney movie in alphabetical order.
Tumblr media
The List:
I took "the" out of all the movie titles so everything wouldn't be toward the end. And I did everything alphabetically rather than by release date because I wanted to get a proper mix of the different eras. I would die trying to watch all the 2000s Disney movies in order, so I feel like the eras being mixed would fuel my motivation to continue my watching spree. I have a few rules for this watching session.
🧸No movies from Pixar, Fox, Marvel, or any other Disney-owned partner
📀No Direct-to-DVD Sequels
🐭No shorts, Fantasia, or anthologies
Aladdin Alice in Wonderland Aristocats Atlantis Bambi Beauty and the Beast Big Hero 6 Black Cauldron Bolt Brother Bear Chicken Little Cinderella Dinosaur Dumbo Emperors New Groove Encanto Fox and the Hound Frozen Frozen 2 Great Mouse Detective Hercules Home on the Range Hunchback of Notre Dame Jungle Book Lady and the Tramp Lilo and Stitch Lion King Little Mermaid Meet the Robinsons Moana Mulan Oliver and Company One Hundred and One Dalmatians Peter Pan Pinocchio Pocahontas Princess and the Frog Ralph Breaks the Internet Raya and the Last Dragon Rescuers Rescuers Down Under Robin Hood Sleeping Beauty Snow White Sword in the stone Tangled Tarzan The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh Treasure Planet Winnie the Pooh Wreck-it-Ralph Zootopia
Extra Fun:
🐇To make things extra fun I have decided to watch the movies with @bhunyee.
🪞A list of references made in Twisted Wonderland
👑I came up with a list of Disney tropes for every movie that I watch:
#1 Racism or the portrayal of non-white racial groups in poor taste #2 Using minority groups, such as LGBTQ, for comedic relief #3 General ickiness or an obvious dirty joke #4 Twist Villain #5 An animal sidekick for a humanoid main character #6 Dead biological parent(s) #7 Has a sequel or spin-off #8 References / Easter Eggs for other Disney movies #9 Has at least 2 bangers #10 Things you wouldn't expect in a kids movie(alcohol, smoking, corpses, etc.) #11 No magic or fantasy #12 Disney "prince/princess" doesn't end the movie as true royalty #13 Well known lost/deleted/cancelled/edited media or hidden background

I have a lot of opinions on Shuichi Saihara as a protagonist like on one hand I really liked his arc and think he was a genuinely interesting character and on the other hand the twist in chapter 1 kneecapped a lot of what I thought made him a compelling detective character on top of playing into some sexist tropes but like who cares about that.
What I ACTUALLY want to talk about is the AMAZING energy this guy exudes. He has more eyeliner on than any scene kid from the early 2000's. He's as gaunt as a sheet of paper. He looks like a stiff breeze could knock him over. Probably because he canonically didn't eat breakfast before entering the killing game so somehow the murder teddy bear coliseum has actually IMPROVED his living habits.
Nearly every line of Saihara's dialogue in the Japanese dub makes him sound like he's 5 seconds away from bursting into tears. During some intense moments he does this sprite where he's supposed to be adjusting the brim of his hat in a cool way but after he ditches his hat it just looks like he's doing a really emo peace sign. His character arc is about realizing that he doesn't want to kill himself and the way he resolves the conflict at the end of the game is to turn to the audience and say "You guys all suck. We're going to kill ourselves."
In chapter 6, Shirogane literally says that the concept for his character was her going "Hey what if I made a detective who's just, like, the most pathetic. The most cripplingly depressed poor little meow meow in existence?" He isn't even a poor little meow meow at this point he's like. One of those blind orphans that get run over in those propaganda films from the 40's. He's like if Oliver Twist went through puberty.
All the protags yap a lot but all of Saihara's internal monologue in the Free Time Events makes him sound like a fucking Wattpad fic about getting sold to One Direction. He embodies Komaru Naegi's "uwu im just a normal teenage girl" schtick except unlike Komaru, he'd probably dislocate his ankle running from a Ball Monokuma. Babe at least Makoto Naegi is kind of an extrovert?
He's super smart and observant and when he genuinely makes the effort to investigate the school, he uncovers the mastermind's secret lair on like the second day. And the next time he makes the effort he figures out the mastermind's identity and all of her schemes. Every investigation he looks at the evidence and immediately makes 8 logical leaps and somehow figures out the seesaw zipline toilet paper murder of the week.
But between that he, like, alternates between curling up in a ball and sobbing in his room and curling up in a ball and sobbing in front of Momota and Harukawa so like, it takes him a while to get to it. Kirigiri was busting into boys' washrooms and sneaking into secret off-limits dorms and throwing herself down trash chutes. Meanwhile Saihara sees the girls' washroom and is like "Hhhhhhhh I can't go in there that's cooooooooties" and needs The Power Of Friendship to, like, push over rubble or smth.
Like, oh man, he's a great character and he does get marginally more confident but, like, I think this dude runs on nothing but coffee and anxiety. He probably doesn't get more than 3 hours of sleep a night between Momota's midnight hangouts and whatever the hell the love hotels and the Monokuma theatres are all about. Say what you want about his role in the game but he's definitely a unique protagonist because I didn't think someone like him could narrate for a chapter without having a seizure. He looks like he has tuberculosis. MORE than the guy in the game who actually has tuberculosis.

426. Gary Gygax - Saga of Old City (1985)
Tumblr media
The first novel set in Greyhawk (well, nominally the second as Andre Norton's Quag Keep already had scenes set in the city of Greyhawk, although it predated the official TSR novels), this would be one of only two official TSR Greyhawk novels written by Gygax. There would be a follow up, Artifact of Evil, in early 1986, but with Gygax exit from the company that year it would be the end of the official TSR Greyhawk novels starring Gord, the Rogue. It wouldn't be the end of the story though, as Gygax would continue to write Gord, the Rogue and publish these novels in his new label, New Infinities. These would consist of three more volumes in 1987 and two more in 1988.
Tumblr media
Greyhawk as an official TSR setting would survive Gygax's exit as would novels set in that world. Rose Estes would pick up on the world and write six more novels after Gygax's exit up to 1989. Then the world would be pretty much dead in terms of fiction up until the 2000 when a couple more novels, adapting adventure modules, mostly, would come out. It would never reach close to the level of popularity of the novels set in Dragonlance or the Forgotten Realms.
Tumblr media
In terms of story Saga of Old City is a good introduction to the Gord character, you follow him from being a young orphan abused by a relative who got saddled with him, and then see him take on an Oliver Twist twist, by becoming a beggar under the control of a Fagin-like Beggarmaster. Later on, freed from beggar bondage Gord develops his thieving skills and eventually becomes a kind of mercenary/adventurer by the time the novel ends. A bildungsroman set in a fantasy world, it isn't that great at characterizing Greyhawk as a setting and it often feels too indebted to Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser to be its own thing. Shockingly enough for an official TSR novel it also has plenty of profanity and amoral actions by the "heroes", something that would eventually disappear with the institution of a more stringent official TSR "code of ethics" in the early 90s. A pity.

Vinny (Character Sheet)
Tumblr media
Picrew
Playlist | Masterlist | Character Info
Playing opposing roles as Wyatt's partner in crime and Waylon's inside man, Vinny skillfully navigates the tumultuous dynamics between his older cousins, guided by genuine love and loyalty.
After The Aid's shocking murder attempt on Wyatt, Vinny took it upon himself to assume a greater role as The Aid's keeper, a move that revealed his pragmatic understanding of the asset's value to the Sullivans' empire and his surprising knack for diplomacy. When not attempting to broker moments of harmony between Wyatt and The Aid or covering supply runs for the family business Waylon mans, Vinny fuels his own destructive habits with Wyatt—recklessly hitting casinos and bars before scoring a bag to split for the night. Vinny is fiercely driven by his desire to help maintain family power and status in Apocamerica's supply chain, quelling both brothers by serving Waylon by day and partying with Wyatt by night. Despite his twisted, one-sided “friendship” with The Aid, his unwavering kinsmanship with Wyatt outweighs all as they both share a hunger for twisted delights–and Wyatt knows just how to fan the flames of his wild side.
Full name: Vincent Warren Sullivan (Vinny)
Role: secondary antagonist, Whumper/part-time Carewhumper
Date of Birth & sign: June 1, 1985 (47), Gemini (story takes place in the year 2032)
Gender: cis-male
Sexuality: pansexual
Height: 6'2"
Weight/body type/build: 180lbs-ish. Wiry, long-limbed, a bit pigeon-chested.
Hometown: Newark, New Jersey
Family Members: Sullivan family tree. He bounces around a lot because of work but basically lives with Wyatt. Very close with Wyatt and Waylon, basically their brother.
Left/right handed: right
Fav genre of music & anthem: 90s & early 2000s rap (claims East Coast is superior, yet his anthem is a West Coast classic), How I Could Just Kill A Man by Cypress Hill
Occupation: "Independent contractor." Jack of all trades and Waylon's right hand: fixer, security, transportation guard, caporegime (capo), hitman, former Army medic, torturer and snuff film cameraman. Somehow knows a little something about everything and always "knows a guy." He didn't get his HS diploma or GED; instead, he joined the Army soon after he got out of Juvie.
Ethnicity (+ American): Italian, French, Greek, English, Romanian, Bulgarian, Turkish, Serbian, Armenian
Hair color & length: dark brown/brown-black wavy mid-length grown-out hair. Usually combed and slicked back to make it look straighter than it is, shaved down on the sides with an undercut. Some chest hair, but not super hairy. He is usually clean-shaven around his signature petite goatee.
Hygiene: looks like he smells like an ashtray and liquor, and usually does. Not the best hygiene, also not the worst, somewhere in the middle, but is more up-kept when on the job. He uses minimal products and will just dose himself with cologne to mask the cigarette and vodka smell. But he takes good care of his teeth and has a collection of grillz, usually sportin' gold tooth caps on both canine teeth + inlay, and gold trip gap filler between front teeth (pictures below).
Tumblr media
Eye color: pale, steely blue, almond-shaped, and hooded eyes.
Skin tone: olive with cool undertones. He can get a lot darker if he gets a tan, but he is usually inside or hiding under shade if outside, so he's rather pale.
Facial features: long, inverted triangle-shaped head. Thin, boxy upper lip mouth. Long, downturned, Roman nose. Straight eyebrows with little to no arch. Narrow ears. Narrow jaw, long chin. Long, thick eyelashes that make him look like he's wearing eyeliner. He usually has bags under his eyes because he's running on nothing but 3 hours of sleep, caffeine, and coke.
Mannerisms: clicks tongue or runs tongue over his gold teeth, sniffs/wrinkles nose, clears throat, and purses lips frequently. Lots of face twitching. If he's not smoking, he's smacking on some gum or snacking on gummy candy. Fidgety, has a hard time sitting still, therefore he’s either pacing or bouncing a knee. Bit of a jabber jaw, sings or hums tunes (someone thought they had a rap career as a youngin). Gets bored easily. Obsessively cleans his guns and knives. Resting bitch face looks like he's unamused or irritated. He snorts and laughs a lot, always cracking jokes. Files his nails daily. Cracks knuckles, neck, and back. Shuffles a deck of cards he has on hand. Checks his tackle-box drug stash he carries around like a lunch pail.
Nervous ticks: it takes a lot to make him nervous since he's spent a lifetime rubbing shoulders with gang members, spent time in juvie, in the trenches of war zones, and as a professional hit man, and has killed countless anthrophages without hesitation. He's good at maintaining a level head in stressful situations, but even he has his limits. When he's actually nervous, he'll rub his chin with his index finger, comb his fingers through hair and scratch his head, yell and punch things, may shoot off bullets into the air or throw knives at something, and in an effort to collect himself, he'll swallow hard and count backward from 5 or 10 to try to ground and calm himself. Rolls his shoulders and shakes his head as if trying to shake off the tension.
Posture: relaxed, cocky and confident. Go-to stance is the power pose with his hands on his hips or clasped in front of him (and perhaps fingers wrapped around a gun). He often leans against things with one shoulder. Uses a swagger walk with a lot of sway in his shoulders. When sitting, he's usually laid back with his legs spread or hunched over, fiddling with something in his hands. Moves a lot and shifts from side to side if he's sitting or standing—rather douchey body language.
Style: in a pressed, solid black Giorgio Armani suit with black Italian leather loafers (when working), in a dingy tracksuit with a white tank underneath, or jeans with a T-shirt or button-up and a leather jacket with motorcycle boots. Wears chains around his neck, rings, and small hoop earrings. Always strapped and always blinged out.
Guns he always has within reach—Colt 1911 Government, 45 ACP, 7 + 1, Cathedral, All 24K Gold, and GLOCK 20 Gen 4 Semi-Auto Pistol (pics).
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Health: for as many drugs he does, the amount of cigarettes he smokes, and the volume of alcohol he drinks, he's surprisingly healthy—or as healthy as he can be. He works out a few times a week and gets in his cardio with jogging and boxing. Agile and can fight. He doesn't have the best diet but thinks eating a salad every other day, chugging protein shakes, and eating trail mix is the secret to his health success. Enjoys a good smoothie creation with The Aid, and it doubles as a small, weird thing they bond over.
Piercings/tattoos: ears pierced and wears small rings, bunch of tattoos—like too many for me to go into detail right now. Here are some tat ideas I swiped off Pinterest (I didn't make any of these) to give an idea, a tat mood board, if you will.
Tumblr media
Birthmarks/scars: scar around his neck from when a gang of kids tried to strangle him to death with a wire in juvie. He has a lot of scars from fighting and his time in the Army, but covered them up with tats.
Language(s): English. Thinks he knows Italian, doesn’t.
Personality: dependable. Loyal. Sycophant to rivals. Cleaver. Resourceful. Quick-witted. Surprisingly competent and knowledgeable. The embodiment of controlled chaos. Voyeuristic. Talkative. Spontaneous. Fidgety. Protective. Restless. Sarcastic. Tough. Cocky. Dangerous. Rowdy. Violent. Noisy. Impulsive. Vulgar. Aggressive. Pragmatic. Inquisitive. Can be cruel and debaucherous. Teasing. Eager. Can take on a mediator role between Waylon and Wyatt, or Wyatt and The Aid. Oddly, he reserves a gentler soft side (as gentle and soft as he can get, that is) for The Aid. Low-key psychotic and dominant (as are all Sullivans).
Vices: benzos (Xanax), cigs, coke (lines or rubs it on his gums, but refuses to smoke it because that's "crackwhore behavior"), shots of hard liquor (preferably Cîroc or Gray Goose vodka). Shooting things. Breaking shit. Throwing knives or darts. Going on a ride on his motorcycle. Dismembering anthrophages or cutting up an already dead cow at the slaughterhouse.
Voice: raucous, sarcastic, and neurotic. Has a thick New Jersey accent. Kinda raspy. Sounds animated and expressive with a wide range of tones, pitches, and speeds.
Smells like: burnt rubber and oil from doing donuts on his bike. Cigs, alcohol, leather, and too much cologne, probably something like Gucci Guilty, or GIORGIO ARMANI Acqua Di Gio.
Face claim(s): Adrian Brody.
Tumblr media
Character inspiration: put all these guys in a blender, add ice, and shake it up, and you have yourself a Vinny smoothie—Vincent Vega (Pulp Fiction), Edward Blake/ The Comedian (Watchmen), Todd Alquist (Breaking Bad & El Camino), Mickey Milkovich (Shameless).
Other: Admittedly, my second favorite Sullivan.

Hello! This is a sort of mini article about lolita fashion! (More of an introduction article) Enjoy!
Lolita fashion-
♡ What is lolita fashion? ♡
Lolita fashion is a subculture which originated in Japan in the early 90s, and gained popularity throughout the mid 90s and early 2000s. The fashion is inspired by victorian clothing and rococo period and is a cute, elegant and modest style.a typical lolita outfit consists of a blouse, a dress or a skirt, a petticoat, long stockings and some headresses such as hats, bows, rectangles and many more. The lolita subculture is divided into 3 main styles- gothic lolita, classic lolita, and sweet/pastel lolita. There are a lot of in-between styles such as hime (princess) lolita, punk lolita, sailor lolita, guro(horror) lolita and many more. A common misconception about lolita fashion is mixing it up with cosplay, which is wrong. lolita is not cosplay, it is a lifestyle and a form of self expression through clothes, while cosplay is a form of roleplay, pretending to be someone else using costumes. another misconception about lolita, is thinking that it has anything to do with the famous novel written by vladimir nabokov lolita, which contains depictions of sexual abuse and pedophilia. The fashion itself is very modest and doesn't focus on sexuality. The meaning and reason for dressing lolita is different for each person. Some dress this way because they find it pretty, and some want to celebrate their femininity in a different and more modest way, rather than enhancing their feminine features. Some wear it as a way to rebel against society's pressure on grown people to act and dress a certain way.
♡ history & origin ♡
Although lolita became an established subculture only in the early 90s, its origins date back to the late 1970s. With kawaii culture taking its first steps, and the admiration of French culture being common among the youth, a new type of female street fashion was born, which is called otome (maiden) kei. It is a casual, romantic hyper feminine style, inspired by the European fashion and femininity of the 1960s. As a result, a lot of fashion brands such as milk, pretty (now known as angelic pretty) and pink house adopted this new look, and the style became very popular in Harajuku district in tokyo. During the 80s, the popular magazine olive influenced fashion by featuring those brands, and promoting a "french lifestyle", which paved the way for future lolita brands. The romantic french look of the 80s was a start, and a little later lolita was born! street fashion magazines such as kera and fruits started featuring lolita fashion in their issues, and the fashion became more popular. The 90s were also when gothic lolita made its first appearance, which was created by the visual kei guitarist mana sama. He created a link between Visual Kei aesthetic and a dark Victorian twist on lolita. He also opened his own brand, moi meme moitie which was a refreshing alternative to the classic lolita brands, and has influenced lolita to this day. At the time, lolita fashion became more defined and, by the noughties decade it was at its peak. Kera published the famous spin off magazine, gothic & lolita bible, which featured diy and makeup tutorials, interviews with designers and musicians, street photographs, new collections and many more. By that time, pretty changed their name to angelic pretty, and more brands started designing for specific lolita substyles. the movie kamikaze girls came out, in which the main character, momoko, is a lolita who wears dresses designed by the brand baby the stars shine bright (btssb) and daydreams about the french rococo lifestyle, influenced the style and members of the community and with that the sweet lolita was the new look. During that time lolita gained recognition overseas, with brands opening shops in Europe and the US, and misako aoki becoming the ambassador of kawaii lolita fashion. The livejournal community EGL (elegant gothic lolita)for western lolita was established, and the international popularity developed the style even more, but sadly as the time passed lolita became less popular. moi meme moitie closed all of their physical stores, and magazines like g&lb fruits and kera stopped publishing new issues. with the rise of fast fashion, came the downfall of lolita fashion.
♡ lolita lifestyle ♡
Many lolitas think of lolita as a way of living, and not just a clothing style. Some sweet lolitas choose to live like princesses at the court of Versailles, surrounding themselves with beauty, while goth lolitas like to be mysterious, hang around gothic churches and graveyards and read gothic poetry. each substyle has its own typical activities and lifestyle, although this way of living is optional and depends on the person. you don’t have to indulge in such activities to be considered as lolita. Some popular hobbies among the lolita community are baking, drawing, sewing and embroidery. Those who live the lolita lifestyle wear coords daily, participate in lolita meetups and interact with the lolita community regularly. Usually, lolita meetups take the form of tea parties or picnics in which the members of the community hang out and discuss the latest trends in lolita fashion. Each meetup has its own dress code. Some lolitas feel more comfortable hanging out in groups rather than alone, because the style drags a lot of unwanted attention. Many lolitas get catcalled and harassed simply for dressing a different way than what's considered as mainstream or "normal".

♡ substyles ♡
As I stated before, the lolita subculture contains lots of different substyles, but the main 3 and most popular are gothic, sweet, and classic.
♡ classic lolita -
a lolita substyle that is highly inspired by historical fashion. This style is more mature and elegant than other styles, as it focuses on capturing the elegance of the Victorian era. common motifs among this style are solid color pieces, florals, and stripes along with prints featuring crowns, fleur de lis, crests, antiques, animals, architecture, and reproductions of old master paintings. Animals and fruit prints in classic lolita tend to have a realistic or antique look to them, as opposed to the more cartoon or fantasy-like styles favored by sweet lolita. Unlike other lolita styles, flat shoes are very uncommon. There are many higher heeled shoes with straps as well as Victorian style boots. As for the hair, it's usually kept pretty neutral. common colors are brown, black and blonde. it can be styled in any way but nothing too extreme. The makeup is usually neutral looking to give off a mature elegance.
Tumblr media
Metamorphose 2015 catalog
♡ gothic lolita -
a lolita substyle that takes its inspiration from Victorian clothing and the gothic subculture. This style was popularized by the visual kei guitarist mana sama. common motifs in gothic lolita often include crosses or religious themes, bats, skulls, vampires, coffins, chandeliers, deep red roses, and castles. Darker colors, such as black, navy and royal blue, maroon, crimson, and deep purples are all common in gothic lolita. popular hairstyles are straightened or curled hair left down, or put into pigtails. sausage curl pigtails are popular as well, but are usually styled with more over the top coords. As for makeup, dark lipstick ( red, wine, deep purple and dark brown) and smokey or neatly defined eyes are common. some may add a light blush.
Although mana sama was the one who popularized this substyle, he often wears a unique, dramatic, doll-like makeup look which is not very common among the community, but is well loved. common shoes are mary janes, rocking horse shoes (originally designed by vivienne westwood), boots, and platform shoes.

♡ sweet lolita - a lolita substyle inspired by victorian and rococo period clothing, with a cute twist. common motifs in sweet lolita are puppies, bears, cupcakes, ice cream, cherries, strawberries, bows, hearts, stars, cakes, flowers and kittens. common colors are pastel colors (pink, blue, yellow, purple, etc) light shades of pink, pearly white, and mint. Sweet lolita accessories are usually very over the top, in order to reflect the fantasy theme of the lolita subculture. common accessories are crowns, stuffed animals, star and heart shaped bags as well as fruit shaped bags. shoes are usually flat, common ones are mary janes and tea party shoes in pastel colors. hairstyles in sweet lolita are very diverse. Some wear their hair curled, some wear pigtails and braids, and some prefer their hair left down. makeup is usually very light and neutral.

♡ lolita today ♡
Although lolita isn't as popular as it once was, it still exists. There are large lolita communities, online and in real life, and some of the brands are still open to this day. In recent years there has been a rising interest in japanese culture in the west. Whether it be through anime or manga, a lot are diving deeper into Japanese culture and fashion. I see lots of people online (typically young people) talking about Japanese street fashion, taking inspiration from fruits and other street fashion magazines, kawaii fashion, gyaru fashion and many more. I think that a part of our generation is trying desperately to go back to slow fashion. I see a lot of teenagers encouraging the consumption of second hand clothing and making things yourself. Maybe this mix of embracing Japanese culture and slow fashion will result in a lolita comeback. I feel like it's happening slowly, with the revival of Japanese street fashion as a whole.

Stirred in time
The martini cocktail, a symbol of sophistication and glamour, has a rich and complex history with several competing origin stories. Let's delve into the evolution of this iconic drink.
Origins:
The martini is widely believed to have evolved from the Martinez cocktail, which featured Old Tom gin, sweet vermouth, maraschino liqueur, and bitters. The first known published recipe for the Martinez appeared in 1884 .
In 1888, Harry Johnson's Bartender's Manual published the first recipe labeled a "Martini Cocktail." This version included Old Tom gin, sweet vermouth, orange curaçao, gum syrup, bitters, and a lemon twist. Over time, the martini evolved, shedding its sweeteners like curaçao and gum syrup to become a drier, more refined drink .
Another theory suggests that the martini descended from the Marguerite cocktail, named after a brand of French vermouth used to make it. The earliest known Marguerite recipe also dates back to the 1880s .
Rise in Popularity
The martini rose to prominence during the Gilded Age (1880-1900) and maintained its status as a staple cocktail through the mid-20th century. Even during Prohibition (1920-1933), when legal liquor was scarce, the martini's popularity persisted thanks to homemade "bathtub" gin .
During World War II, as vermouth became harder to obtain, the amount used in martinis decreased, resulting in a drier drink focused more on gin. This "dry" martini style was championed by notable figures such as Winston Churchill and Ernest Hemingway .
Cultural Impact
The martini became deeply ingrained in popular culture, famously known as the drink of choice for the fictional British spy James Bond. The iconic "shaken, not stirred" line was first uttered on screen in the 1964 film Goldfinger .
While purists consider the gin martini the classic version, the vodka martini also gained popularity, along with numerous modern variations such as the dirty martini (with olive brine), espresso martini, and appletini .
After a decline in the 1960s and 70s, the martini saw a resurgence in the 1990s and 2000s as "retro" culture became fashionable again .
Conclusion
The martini's journey from its 19th-century origins to its status as a cultural icon reflects its timeless appeal and adaptability. Whether you prefer it with gin or vodka, dry or dirty, the martini remains a symbol of elegance and sophistication, celebrated by cocktail enthusiasts around the world.
Evolution of the Martini
The martini is a classic cocktail with a rich and storied history, with various styles and variations emerging over time. Here's an overview of the martini's evolution and some notable variations.
Early Martinis
Early martini recipes were sweeter, often made with equal parts gin and sweet vermouth, along with modifiers like bitters, curaçao, and gum syrup. During the Gilded Age (1880-1900), the martini rose in popularity, and stronger versions with more gin emerged.
Dry Martini
As the 20th century progressed, tastes shifted toward drier martinis with less vermouth. The "Dry Martini" became popular, with ratios ranging from 5:1 to 8:1 parts gin to vermouth. Famous figures like Winston Churchill and the fictional James Bond helped popularize the very dry martini.
Gibson Martini
The Gibson is a variation of the martini garnished with a cocktail onion instead of an olive or lemon twist. It's believed to have originated in the late 19th century, possibly named after Charles Dana Gibson, the illustrator who popularized the "Gibson Girl" drawings.[2]
Wet Martini
As a counterpoint to the Dry Martini, the Wet Martini uses a higher ratio of vermouth to gin, often 2:1, harking back to the martini's earlier, sweeter roots. It fell out of fashion for a time but has seen a resurgence in recent years.
Dukes Martini
In the 1980s, bartender Salvatore Calabrese at Dukes Bar in London earned acclaim for his expertly crafted Dry Martinis, which were declared "the best Martini in England" by travel writer Stanton Delaplane. Calabrese's technique involved chilling the glass and using a kiss of dry vermouth with ice-cold gin and a lemon twist.
Modern Martini Innovations
In recent decades, bartenders have experimented with new martini variations, such as the Dirty Martini (with olive brine), the Breakfast Martini (with orange marmalade and Earl Grey tea), and miniature "one-sip" martinis. Techniques like tableside martini trolley service have also emerged, allowing for personalized martini experiences.
The martini's enduring popularity and versatility have led to a wide range of styles and interpretations over the decades, from sweet to bone-dry, garnished with olives, lemon twists, or cocktail onions, and served in various proportions and innovative presentations.
Recipes
Dry Martini (6:1 ratio):
Mix 60 ml of gin and 10 ml of dry vermouth. Stir the ingredients with ice, then strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a lemon twist or three olives.
Gibson Martini (6:1 ratio):
Mix 60 ml of gin and 10 ml of dry vermouth. Stir the ingredients with ice, then strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a cocktail onion.
Dirty Martini (12:1:1 ratio):
Mix 60 ml of gin, 5 ml of dry vermouth, and 5 ml of olive brine. Stir the ingredients with ice, then strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with three olives. If you like your martinis extra dirty, add one or two extra barspoons (2.5 ml each) of olive brine or more if you feeling brave
Churchill Martini (1:0 ratio):
Chill a martini glass. Glance at a bottle of vermouth, fill the glass with chilled gin, and garnish with a lemon twist.
Wet Martini (1:1 ratio):
Mix 35 ml of gin with 35 ml of vermouth. Stir the ingredients with ice, then strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a lemon twist or three olives.
Vespa Martini
Mix 40 ml of gin, 20 ml of vodka, and 10 ml of Lillet blanc (or another aperitif wine). Stir the ingredients with ice, then strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a lemon twist. This martini can also be shaken if preferred.
Tips:
Chill your glass in the freezer instead of using ice and water.
Keep your mixing glass (the vessel in which you build and stir your martini) in the freezer for better control over dilution and chilling. This allows more time to stir and chill your martini without over diluting it.
For all martini variations you have the option to shake or stir, however its recommended to stir as oppose to shake.
If you have the time, consider batching up a bottle of your preferred martini ratio and storing it in the freezer.
Example: Recipe for Scaling Up a Martini Mix to 1 Litre
Ingredients:
818 ml of gin
136 ml of dry vermouth
46 ml of water
Instructions:
Measure out 818 ml of gin.
Measure out 136 ml of dry vermouth.
Measure out 46 ml of water.
Combine all the ingredients in a large container.
Mix well until everything is fully combined.
This batch yields approximately 9.5 servings of 75 ml each, for a total of approximately 1 litre of martini mix.
If your martinis are coming out a different size, remember to adjust the ratios to fit the glass in which you are serving your martini.
Maintain the same ratios for whichever martini you'd like to enjoy.
For the dilution of each martini in a batch mix, add 5 ml per martini serve.
All the recipes stated here are my suggestions on what to serve and how to prepare them. Everyone has their recipes and should enjoy the drinks they enjoy, at the end of the day if you are drinking it you should enjoy it. Play around with the different recipes and see what you like and don’t like, who knows you may find your new favourite drink?
There is no “right or wrong” way to make a drink just a better way, this blog aims to help making better drink easier

"Zootopia" (2016)
Let's get one thing out of the way first: "Zootopia" is a treat to watch. Their animation team received quite a bit of praise in wake of its release, and it's extremely deserved. All the different terrains they travel through in "Zootopia" are imaginative, clever, and well-considered. The visual jokes are top notch, and the bits with the sloth DMV and the timber wolves are a hoot.
I think there's a lot to like about the story here, too, and it's not a given that I'd say that since I figured out the twist halfway through. There are important lessons about not painting with too broad a brush, and we see the protagonist, Judy Hopps, on both sides of the coin. She's constantly striving to earn respect within her department despite being a small bunny, but she is also just unsure enough about foxes that it sets up a crushing conflict with her new nuisance-turned-friend, Nick Wilde. Tolerance, forgiveness, and understanding are all as important to this movie as basic heroism, and it deserves praise for that.
In short, it looks fantastic, touches on important life themes not always glimpsed in Disney movies, and has its fair share of humor as well. So… why did "Zootopia" sometimes struggle to hold my attention and ultimately fall in the middle of the pack of my rankings?
It's hard to say. This may just one of those good, old-fashioned subjective opinions. While I enjoyed the story from a thousand-foot view, the execution of it was not super-duper compelling. It wasn't bad by any stretch -- far from it -- but something was missing with the characters. Maybe part of it is that I don't find Jason Bateman as funny as I did when he was on "Arrested Development," though he did a good job with Nick's indignant turn on Judy. And if the the second top-billing isn't quite delivering the goods, then the lead has to crush it, and Ginnifer Goodwin as Judy just wasn't it. Again: not objectionable! Just not capital-g Good. The side characters mostly didn't do it for me, either, and while she only popped up occasionally, Shakira was just distracting. It takes you out of the movie to have her gazelle character pop up on the news and just… be Shakira.
So this one was tough for me because I know how much some people like "Zootopia." Hell, it won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film and this wasn't a "Brave" situation where people watched with raised eyebrows (yes, "Wreck-It Ralph" clearly should have won, why do you ask). But I can't pretend like something was better than I thought. That's OK, too! Taste just varies. So it goes.

1980s hits!
Anne of Green Gables, The Princess Bride, Back to the Future, The Land Before Time, Oliver & Company & like. Half of Ghibli’s hits are from this era, do you have a fav?
Anne of Green Gables
never seen | want to see | the worst | bad | whatever | not my thing | good | great | favorite| masterpiece
Assuming you're talking about the Kevin (?) Sullivan one, BELOVED. I have very fond memories of watching it at my grandparents' place... my grandfather loves AoGG (he was born in New Brunswick!). I used to be quite the Anne girlie lol, still have fond memories of it even though I only remember the first half of the movie 🥰
The Princess Bride
never seen | want to see | the worst | bad | whatever | not my thing | good | great | favorite | masterpiece
Top movies of all time. I am not necessarily an 80s 'everything was better then' (lmao not with reagan as president...) but movies in the 80s were insanely next level. The Princess Bride is one of my all time favourite movies! It's perfect for ANY mood, it's bisexual catnip, and it's infinitely quotable. Cary Elwes in this movie is STILL the ideal man.
Back to the Future
never seen | want to see | the worst | bad | whatever | not my thing | good | great | favorite | masterpiece
Quite possibly my literal favourite movie of all time. I can never get tired of it. Michael J Fox, short Canadian king. You built a time machine... out of a DeLorean?? (I own four, btw: two BTTF DeLorean Christmas ornaments, a hot wheels one, and a playmobil one). The first movie is perfect on its own, but the trilogy is also insanely good. If you haven't seen it, i think you perhaps haven't lived. Yes the actual time travel science is bullshit according to other time travel movies, but I don't CARE. also I literally wrote a whole BTTF AU. this is my movie.
The Land Before Time
never seen | want to see | the worst | bad | whatever | not my thing | good | great | favorite | masterpiece
We had this on VHS (dating myself here...) and I really enjoyed it! Justice for the 80s/90s animations that were not Disney... also they made leafs look fucking delicious.
Oliver & Company
never seen | want to see | the worst | bad | whatever | not my thing | good | great | favorite | masterpiece
Disney's flop era... I'm a Robin Hood girlie. Precursor to the weird 2000s era where they just told whatever stories they wanted. Oliver Twist but with animals in New York City is a fun concept. I haven't seen it though. Should I watch it?
Okay yeah, I looked up what Ghiblis were in the 80s and uh.
Castle in the Sky
never seen | want to see | the worst | bad | whatever | not my thing | good | great | favorite | masterpiece
All Ghiblis are a masterpiece, but even when you ignore all the fun pirate stuff in Castle in the Sky, it's surprisingly... haunting? We got a bunch of Ghibli movies on DVD one Christmas, and we watched Ponyo one night, and then followed it up with this one... it just feels so... melancholy. And yet full of whimsy (it's a warning about mistreating the earth and resources like so many of them are, goddamn it). Anyway, picturing the giant floating tree now... and feeling emotional.

i used to just write anything as a little kid. i loved reading so i loved writing too. i still fairly vividly remember (fairly bc i forgot a lot but this was nearly 20 years ago) the longest piece of original fiction i’d written before, which was about a girl who had a giant hawk and rode it into this big cave where there was a secret city of thieves and she met their prince who was like kind of an oliver twist type and it was called like sarah and the city of thieves or some predictable shit of that nature. there was absolutely no plot beyond this. it didn’t really make any sense. but in my defense I think I couldn’t have been older than like 7 or 8 and had been fed on a steady diet of early 2000s YA novels

ok actual final(?) thoughts on saltburn *spoilerinos*
im going to pretend that everyone exaggerated about specific scenes in that movie so that i would go into it thinking it was something else entirely.
obv i knew about the graveyard and the bathtub (tho i didnt know it was dick in the dirt and i didnt know it was slurping down the drain) but other than that was honestly going in blind. i knew it was set in the 2000s but i didnt realize it was going to be full on homage/subversion of the 2000s twee indie film. like that specific vibe of movies when a fuckin MGMT Summer Montage started happening i was going nuts over it like idk for some reason "set in 2000s" didnt register as THAT KIND OF set in the 2000s ykwim? anyway i kinda figured oliver was a lot more twisted than he let on specifically when he first threw farleigh under the bus when he caught him eating out a girl Every Day Of The Month. there were probably earlier hints but i dont remember i was too busy dying over the fact that 30 mins ago no cars go was playing in a college bar scene, but i was still shocked to find out that OHHHH LITERALLY EVERYTHING HE SAID WAS A LIE.
wrt this being a "too freaky/not freaky enough" movie: ofc the "too freaky" people are just cowards, but i dont think it was really meant to be full on like. pink flamingos eating dog shit or whatever? i really do think it was just the overhype about how weird it is and the people who just watch goth girl dirt ass fucking porn on the reg arent gonna be Phased by it but that wasnt really the point it was more about like, the insight into the character lol idk. and like at that point its up to the viewer whether or not they wanna empathize with the character at all i GUESS but even then idk i think everyone kinda sucked in all their own fun ways like farleigh was a dick, all of the fuckin family were just shitty rich people, the only maybe decent person was the blonde nerd right at the beginning of the movie. but personally as a freak enthusiast i do like going "i would do Literally Anything to become a manic pixie dream boy in a 2000s indie film" and oliver managed to do it i guess. ultimately felix's greatest sin was being a bland richboy character in comparison to ollie like jacob elordis job was literally sit there and look pretty lmao, but i like my psychotic evil boyxboy ships to go both ways ykwim like i want them trying to kill each other :(
closing thoughts: NEVER TRUST A TWINK NERD

Barney Clark as Oliver Twist (2005) meets up with Harry Eden as the Artful Dodger on the streets of London. Harry was born in Essex, and has 27 acting credits from a 2000 movie on the telly to 2017. His other notable credit is Peter Pan (2003).

one thing about him is that he's always down to shave his hairline for the bit. it's why it's so weird that The Gift came out in 2000 but in movies like 5 years later he looks 10 years younger bc his hair grew back. it's also why he goes through periods of wearing a number of silly hats in interviews and in the wild even though everyone can just see the movie like sir we know what's under there you don't need to be in jimmy buffett/oliver twist/polar express drag rn
