Absolutely cannot get how fucked up the prison is out of my head. Not only are the prisoners competing against each other in a constant race to fight for simple things like flavor in their food, the losing group get “fried.” That is basic operant conditioning. They are shocking the prisoners if they don’t perform well enough, and providing positive reinforcement with flavor in their food when they do. And it’s not even just the work ethic. Everything about the place is a stimulus, from the shock batons to the drill positions (commands like “on/off program,” “tighten up,” “fall out,” “hot floor,” etc) to the color of the lights. All these prisoners are expected to learn these codes and expectations or be at risk of serious punishment and injury. 

And once that behavior is learned it is so, so goddamn hard to let go of.

Now I’m imagining a Cassian that jumps at the sight of red lights. A Cassian who can’t help but freeze up when a piece of equipment sparks, even if only for a second. A Cassian who hides his flinches whenever anybody shouts too loud, resisting the urge to put his hands behind his head on instinct. A Cassian who grits his teeth against the sudden, awful spike of adrenaline he gets over nothing but a flashing light, hiding the shaking in his fingers by curling them into fists. A Cassian who has nightmares about men jumping to their death, waking with a choked gasp and the scent of burning in his nose. A Cassian who hates these things that have been ingrained into him, hates the people who put him there and enforced that system even more. A Cassian who will do everything in his power to make sure he’s never put in that position again.
