Ostara Egg Salad
Ostara isn't for awhile, but I thought it would be a good idea to post some things. That way people could get a head start on preparation.
6 eggs
1 cup mayo
1 Tablespoon Dijon
2 tsp lemon juice
2 tsp white wine or rice vinegar
1/4 tsp fresh ground black pepper
1/8 tsp salt
Hard boil the eggs. Peel and cut them lengthwise. Add other ingredients to a bowl, mix until smooth. Arrange 12 egg halves on a plate, yolk side down. Place them in a way that the big ends meet in the middle to make a petal design. Spoon the sauce over the eggs. Serve with crusty bread. To really make festive, top with chives, microgreens, or edible flowers.

Hey witches! As nature awakens from its winter slumber and the days begin to lengthen, we come to Ostara, the spring equinox, a time of balance, renewal, and fertility.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ostara, also known as the Spring Equinox or Eostre, is a pagan holiday celebrated around March 20th in the Northern Hemisphere (September 20th in the Southern Hemisphere). It marks the arrival of spring and the balance between light and darkness as day and night are of equal length.
The holiday is named after the Germanic goddess Ostara, who represents fertility, renewal, and the dawn. Many customs and symbols associated with Ostara are rooted in ancient pagan traditions and folklore. Some key aspects of Ostara celebrations include:
Celebrating the Equinox: Ostara marks the arrival of spring and the rebirth of life in the natural world. It's a time to celebrate the earth's renewal, the return of longer days, and the promise of new beginnings. Here are some ways to honor Ostara and celebrate the beauty and bounty of the season:
🌱 Planting Seeds:
Get your hands dirty and plant seeds in your garden or indoor pots to symbolize growth, abundance, and new life.
🥚 Decorating Eggs:
Embrace the ancient tradition of decorating eggs, a symbol of fertility and rebirth. Paint, dye, or decorate eggs with symbols and colors that represent the themes of spring and renewal.
🌸 Nature Walks:
Take a walk in nature and immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and scents of spring. Notice the blooming flowers, budding trees, and chirping birds as you connect with the energy of the season.
🕯️ Rituals and Ceremonies:
Hold a ritual or ceremony to honor the equinox and invoke blessings for balance, harmony, and renewal in your life. Light candles, burn incense, and offer prayers or invocations to the goddess Ostara and the spirits of spring.
🍃 Feasting and Sharing:
Gather with loved ones for a festive meal or potluck to celebrate the abundance of the season. Cook and share dishes made with seasonal ingredients such as fresh greens, herbs, and spring vegetables.
Here are some ideas for recipes for Ostara:
Hot Cross Buns (Cross Quarter Buns): These tasty pastries are often enjoyed during the pre-Easter season of Lent. The decorative cross on top represents a Christian symbol, but you can infuse your own Pagan beliefs into it. Consider associating the four quarters of the cross with elements, directions, moon phases, seasons, Tarot suits, or fire festivals. To make your own, start with your favorite muffin or roll recipe and create an X on top using raisins, currants, or scored dough. Mint Chutney: Mint chutney is a versatile condiment that pairs well with various dishes. Keep in mind that the term “chutney” covers a wide range of culinary options. Roasted Lamb: For many ancestors, lamb was a symbol of spring and rebirth. Roasted lamb can be a delicious centerpiece for your Ostara feast. Dairy Products: Dairy is associated with fertility and new life. Include cheese, milk, cream, butter, and other dairy items in your Ostara meals. Eggs: Eggs symbolize new beginnings and potential. Hard-boiled eggs, deviled eggs, or egg salad are great choices. Spring Greens and Fresh Herbs: Celebrate the awakening of nature by incorporating fresh greens like spinach, kale, and spring onions. Use herbs like parsley, chives, and dill to add flavor and vibrancy to your dishes. Seasonal Crops: Asparagus and fiddlehead ferns are early spring crops that align perfectly with Ostara. Check in your area what is available! Marshmallow Peeps: While not traditional in ancient practices, these colorful marshmallow treats have become an iconic part of modern Ostara celebrations
Embrace the Magic of Ostara: Whether you're planting seeds, decorating eggs, or simply basking in the beauty of nature, Ostara offers a magical opportunity to connect with the energy of spring and celebrate the renewal and rebirth of life. So gather your friends, set your intentions, and let the magic of Ostara guide you on your journey into the light! 🌼🌿
Spring is a time of rebirth and growth. Consider working magic related to these themes.
Explore magical aspects of:
Serpents: Symbolism and folklore. Eggs: Associated with new life. Spring Flowers: Use blooming flowers in your magical workings. Daffodils: Early bloomers with magical purposes. Rabbits: Beyond the Easter Bunny. Magical Gardening: Growing plants as a magical act.
Remember, Ostara is a time to celebrate the return of light, growth, and the promise of warmer days ahead. 🌸🌼🌞

Celebrating Ostara: A Joyous Family Tradition
As the chill of winter begins to wane and the promise of spring fills the air, many families around the world come together to celebrate Ostara, a festival that honors the arrival of spring and the renewal of life. Rooted in ancient pagan traditions, Ostara is a time of rejoicing in the awakening earth, the lengthening days, and the vibrant energy of nature.
In my family, celebrating Ostara is a cherished tradition that we eagerly anticipate each year. Here's a glimpse into how we celebrate this special time together:
1. **Setting the Scene**: We start by decorating our home with symbols of spring and fertility. Brightly colored eggs, fresh flowers, and representations of baby animals adorn our living space, infusing it with the spirit of the season.
2. **Preparing a Feast**: Like many holidays, Ostara is a time for feasting and indulging in delicious food. We gather as a family to prepare a meal featuring seasonal ingredients such as leafy greens, sprouts, and early spring vegetables. Dishes like quiches, salads, and fruit tarts take center stage, symbolizing the abundance of the earth's bounty.
3. **Egg Decorating**: One of the most beloved Ostara traditions is decorating eggs. We spend hours dyeing eggs vibrant colors and embellishing them with intricate designs. It's a creative and joyful activity that brings out the artist in each family member.
4. **Egg Hunts and Games**: No Ostara celebration would be complete without an egg hunt! We hide decorated eggs around our garden or local park for the children (and adults!) to find. It's a spirited competition that brings out laughter and excitement as everyone searches for the prized eggs.
5. **Outdoor Rituals**: We take advantage of the longer days and milder weather by holding our Ostara rituals outdoors whenever possible. Whether it's a simple ceremony in our backyard or a gathering at a nearby natural setting, being surrounded by the sights, sounds, and scents of nature enhances our connection to the season and the earth.
6. **Planting Seeds**: Ostara is a time of sowing seeds both literally and metaphorically. As a family, we take part in planting seeds in our garden, nurturing them as they begin to grow and flourish. It's a symbolic act of renewal and growth that reminds us of the cyclical nature of life.
7. **Reflection and Gratitude**: Finally, we take a moment to reflect on the past and express gratitude for the blessings in our lives. We acknowledge the hardships we've overcome and the growth we've experienced, embracing the spirit of renewal and hope that Ostara represents.
Celebrating Ostara with my family is a time-honored tradition that fills our hearts with joy and gratitude. Through rituals, feasting, and time spent in nature, we reconnect with each other and the earth, celebrating the beauty and abundance of the season. May the spirit of Ostara bring renewal and blessings to all who celebrate it. Blessed be!

Ostara Fairy Cakes with Pistachios & Rose Buttercream
These rose & pistachio mini Ostara fairy cakes give any Ostara tea party a fairytale vibe.
Serve these on your porch with some tea or take your cakes into the woodlands and make your Spring Equinox celebration magical with a picnic in a forest setting.
Tie on an apron, and let’s get started.
Ingredient Correspondences and Kitchen Witch Facts
The crucial ingredients in this recipe for Ostara fairy cakes symbolize key aspects of Ostara, the first spring holiday on the Wheel of the Year.
Pistachios
Ruled by Element of Earth, pistachios nourish life and ground us in the present moment.
Crack open a pistachio and peel back the paper-thin skin.  Underneath it, the bright green color of a shelled pistachio resembles the bright green of tender grass shoots and baby leaves emerging from the trees.
This shade of green symbolizes new beginnings and the early spring awakening of growth and renewal.
Lemon
We use the fresh, cleansing scent and flavor of lemons in witchcraft to clear negative energy and refresh the mind.
In this recipe, the sunny yellow color of lemons is a sun symbol and represents the growing of the light into the spring and summer months.
Rosewater
Although we generally think of roses as a component of love spells, in this case they symbolize dreams and good luck.
Spring is a season for imagining what is possible.
Add roses to your Ostara fairy cakes to weave the magic of hope and inspiration into your kitchen witch spells.
Making Rosewater
If you don’t have any rosewater on hand, it’s extremely easy to make.
I used the following method.
Strip the petals from the stems of organic-grade roses. Rinse them under cool water to remove any dirt or debris.
Place roses in a pot of spring water.
Bring to a low simmer until rose petals lose most of their color.
Allow to cool completely.  Strain the petals and store the extract in a sterilized glass jar in the refrigerator.
Pairings
Serve these delightful little Ostara fairy cakes with any of the following:
Purple Fairy Cocktail With Butterfly Peaflowers
Spring Fruit Salad
Pear Berry Goddess Bowls
Sweet & Spicy Roasted Nut Mix
Or keep it simple, and set these out with a bowl of strawberries, some nuts and a bottle of champagne.
Ingredients
For the cakes:
-1.5 cups flour
-3/4 cup pistachios, shelled
-1 teaspoon salt
-2 teaspoons baking powder
-1/2 tablespoon cinnamon
-2 eggs
-1 cup sugar
-1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
-3/4 cup milk
-1/4 cup rosewater
For the buttercream frosting:
-1/2 cup (1 stick) butter at room temp
-juice of 1/2 lemon
-1 tablespoon rosewater
-2 cups confectioners sugar
Step 1
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Line muffin tins with paper liners.
In a blender or food processor, pulse shelled pistachios until they form a coarse powder.
Combine powder pistachios with flour, baking powder, cinnamon and salt in a small bowl.
Step 2
In a separate bowl, mix eggs, sugar, butter, milk and 1/4 cup rosewater.
Stir together wet ingredients with dry until smooth.
Divide evenly among cupcake tins.
Bake for 14-18 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
Step 3
While cupcakes are baking, make the frosting.
Cream together butter and sugar.
Add rosewater and lemon juice.
Once cupcakes are completely cooled, frost cupcakes.  Optionally, garnish with lemon zest, crushed pistachios and/or (affiliate link —–>) dried, edible tea roses.
Serve and enjoy!  Happy Ostara!

Vernal Equinox 2023
The spring has crept into our winter where I am. Green things started to bud and bloom in February. I feel a slow returning to myself.
This year I’d like to picnic with a loved one or three someplace quiet and pleasant. I’ll bring:
Rows and rows of tamagoyaki. This is a Japanese rolled omelette, a touch sweet. I love deviled eggs but I’ve grown a little bored with them. A friend of mine gifted me the rectangular pan before he returned to Japan. I can’t make them quite like he does, but I’m determined to enjoy practicing it.
A salad of arugula and red lettuce with sliced watermelon radish, asparagus, zucchini cut into ribbons, edamame, peas, roasted hazelnuts, thick flakes of parmigiano reggiano, and a dressing made of lemon, olive oil, and goat cheese.
Chicken curry salad. I've associated this with Ostara since reading Neil Gaiman's American Gods in highschool. I’m going to experiment with a Japanese rather than Indian curry flavor, with kewpie mayo and diced apple. Pray for me.
My partner has picked up mead brewing as a hobby, so a growler of this will come with us. I am planting elderberry this year so I hope for an infusion in the future.
Matcha marscapone tarts with a miso pâte sablée, topped with berries and sliced fruit. Miso seems like an odd addition to a cookie like crust but rather than being salty it imparts a nutty flavor.

Quick Things to do to celebrate Ostara
So we are still in lockdown and there's not much gathering happening but here are some things you can do to bring in the Spring!
1. Burning down Barriers Spring Equinox coincides with the rebirth of the zodiac cycle. (In the Northern Hemisphere). Aries season is about new beginnings but also our courage to commit to them and face any challenges in our way. This is a good time to reflect on any challenges and how you can overcome them. When you have a good idea, you can write them down and burn it over a fire-safe plate putting energy towards the universe and your will finding a way to clear these paths for you.
2. Divining, Strategizing and Advice Ask tarot (or any favorite types of divining) for advice on these obstacles and how to overcome them. You can pull a card for the nature of the obstacle, another for unforeseen details you should be aware of and one for general advice.
3. Visit a Park! We are having incredible Spring weather over here so it would be great to take advantage and go to a park. Maybe have a small picnic there and admire the daffodils and budding trees. Leave offerings of energetic blessings and moon water to plants and the earth. Seek out a birch tree that would like to help you with your courage and your wishes. Offer them water. (Birch trees have very fiery excitable energy and are helpful in the areas of courage and vitality.)
4. Seasonal Flowers While you are out, get yourself a small set of flowers! I got a pack for only £2.50 at sainsburys. You can get them partly budded so over time they will bloom in your room. Tulips are ideal for this sabbat.
5. Connecting with your Inner Child
This sabbat is symbolic with new beginnings and our inner child. Get in touch with your inner child through meditation, doing things you loved to do as a kid, playing certain games, revisiting stuff. Allowing yourself to have fun, create and play with no judgement.
6. Make egg spell candles If you are using eggs in your breakfast or for your feast make sure to save the shells. Try to crack it towards the top and not the middle. You can save most of the shell this way. After you empty the yolks you can wash the shell and dye them using white vinegar and food coloring. You can even color them with paint. For the inside you can take tea light candles, empty the wax, melt it and fill the hollowed shell. You can place the wick in the middle before it cools. The Egg candle can represent new opportunities and blessings coming your way for the new season.
7. Clear and redecorate your Space and Altar Do a quick clean of your space. Vaccuum the floor, wipe your altar down, open windows and decorate your altar with the bouquet and egg candles. Place symbolism that helps you to have courage and overcome obstacles or inspire new beginnings.
8. Music! Listening to music always helps to set the mood of the day. Here is a playlist for this sabbat!
9. Make a feast So for my feast for 1 it's just a festive dish with a side of veggies and a nice dessert. Ostara's festive dishes that's easy to make/find for 1 can either be a mini quiche with spring vegetables (I like M&S brand if I don't feel like cooking) or seasoned lemon honey baked chicken thighs. The veggie side would be green beans or a butter lettuce salad with a light vinaigrette. The dessert would be custard with icecream. (Or sometimes rice pudding).
Also if it is accessible/local to you and you can forage it safely, this is the time of the year to make a cleavers infusion! It's a great body cleanser for the Spring time!
Have a blessed Ostara everyone! Hope we can break out of this repressive time and finally have things moving forward again.

This coming Monday, March 20th is Ostara.
Ostara marks the Spring Equinox, which happens between March 19 -23. Ostara is a pagan celebration of the German goddess Eostre and the origins of the Christian celebration of Easter. As the beginning of spring Ostara is a good time to literally and figuratively plant seeds for the future.
In modern day living Ostara is also good time to start taking action on the ideas and goals you started thinking about around Yule and Imbolc. What you plant during Ostara will be ready to be harvested during the coming summer months.
SYMBOLS OF OSTARA

Foods: Eggs, honey, sprouted greens, baked goods, asparagus
Stones: Aquamarine, amethyst, rose quartz

Ostara, the Spring Equinox
Vernal equinox, March 19 or 20th
Rituals observe the coming of spring and fertility of the land.
History: In ancient Rome people who followed the goddess Cybele believed she had a virgin birth to Attis who died and gets resurrected every vernal equinox on the Julian calender (between March 22 and March 25). A Persian dynasty celebrated this with the 13 day festival of No Ruz, or New Day, to celebrate renewal and hope. Indigenous Mayan people have celebrated the spring equinox for ten centuries and use the ceremonial pyramid El Castill, Mexico. Eostre was the Saxon version of the Germanic goddess Ostara and her feast was held on the full moon following the vernal equinox, almost the identical calculation for Christian’s Easter. For early Germanic country pagans this was a time to celebrate the planting of new crops and the new crop season. Typically the Celtic people did not celebrate this time, they were in tune with the changing seasons. For more modern celebrations starting your herb garden/ starting to prepare your soil and seeds for late spring plantings. For many modern pagans this is a time for renewal and rebirth and should be celebrated by appreciating nature around you.
Folklore/Legends: *American hoodoo snakes are used as an instrument of harm *St. Patrick is famous for driving snakes out of Ireland but it’s a metaphor for pagans *Snake shedding skin=transformation, stealthy creatures= cunning and treachery, also fertility, masculine power, and protection *Eggs and rabbits represent fertility *Colored eggs comes from Germanic traditions *In Persia a mother would eat an egg for every child she’s had *In Christianity an egg was eaten to signify the end of lent *In some Native (American) cultures cracking an egg was to form a universe, the earth, or even the birth of a god *Chinese folk tale used eggs to tell the formation of the universe and the beginning of many things *Old English superstition that if a girl leaves an egg in front of a fire and go to sleep on a stormy night the man she’ll marry come through the door and pick up the egg *British sailors would eat a boiled egg and crush the shell because evil spirits or witches could sail to them in the egg shells *In some traditions Daffodils are considered luck, so you shouldn’t step on them or crush them
Decorate your altar with eggs, flowers, rabbits, and seedings to represent the fertility of spring. Some colors include yellow, purple, and greens. You can also include pinks and blues and pastels. This time is all about the balance between light and dark, so your altar can reflect that with symbols of polarity like a God and Goddess statue. Because this is a time of New Life flowers such as crocuses, daffodils, lilies and other magical flowers would be a great addition to your altar.
Symbols include bumblebees, ladybugs, caterpillars, gemstones such as aquamarine, rose quartz, and moonstone, and ritual fires.
Garden Blessing for Ostara- The earth is cool and dark, and far below, new life begins. May the soil be blessed with fertility and abundance, with rains of life-giving water, with the heat of the sun, with the energy of the raw earth. May the soil be blessed as the womb of the land becomes full and fruitful to bring forth the garden anew.
Prayer for Resurrection of the Earth- The death sleep of winter has slowly faded, the rigor of the ground loosens, and the earth is once more reborn. Like Mithras and Osiris, reborn from death, life returns again to the land, springing up as the snow melts away. As the soil warms and the days grow longer, dew forms along new sprouts of grass, bringing life back. Awaken! Awaken! Awaken! And rise! Let the earth come to life again, and welcome the light of spring!
Prayer for Honoring the Goddesses of Spring- Hail, and welcome! Green life returns to the earth blooming and blossoming once more from the soil. We welcome you, goddesses of spring, Eostre, Persephone, Flora, Cybele, in the trees, in the soil, in the flowers, in the rains, and we are grateful for your presence.

What is Ostara?
Ostara, Eostre, Vernal Equinox, and Spring Equinox are all beautiful ways to refer to the celebration of Spring every year! As the wheel of the year turns again, we find ourselves at a new point of balance within the year.
Ostara is a time when the day and night are equals in time, when the God and the Goddess are equals in love, and the true understanding of life and energy can be seen.
During Ostara, Wiccans and Pagans celebrate the ability to create, manifest, love, and gain a deeper understanding of life. Physically, new life is beginning to spring up from seemingly dead earth, love is in the air, spawning creation, and energy is returning to earth, as the days begin to grow longer.
Metaphysically, the Goddess and God energies of the Universe are coming together as one, birthing the energy of creation. The Goddess supplies the energy of Earth as she begins to grow into a Mother; the God supplies the energy of the Sun, as he grows in strength and power.

Happy Ostara! 🐇🌱🥚🐰
Ostara, or the Spring Equinox, is an enchanted borderland time outside of time where a magickal seam joins dark and light. From this moment on, the Sun God begins his seminal journey across the sky. His light and warmth overtake the darkness of Winter until his power peaks at Summer Solstice in June.
Ostara is a time of new fire. The light and dark are in perfect balance, but the light is growing and the Sun is about to burst forth with new energy. It is a season of fertility and growth.
Eostre or Ostara is the Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring to whom offerings of cakes and colored eggs were made at the Vernal Equinox. Rabbits were sacred to her, especially white rabbits, and she was believed to take the form of a rabbit.
ALTAR: For the Ostara altar: -- Candles should be light green. -- Incense may be jasmine. -- Decorate the circle with spring wildflowers. -- Place an earthenware or wooden bowl containing soil or a large seed of some kind on the altar.
HERBS to use in your magic at Ostara: lily of the valley, tansy, lavender, marjoram, thyme, tarragon, lovage, lilac, violets, lemon balm, dogwood, honeysuckle, oakmoss, orrisroot, sunflower seeds, rose hips, oak, elder, willow, crocus, daffodil, jonquil, tulip, broom (Scotch or Iris), meadowsweet, acorn, trefoil (purple clover), vervain.
STONES: Clear quartz crystal, rose quartz, agate, lapis lazuli, amazonite, garnet.
ACTIVITIES : Perform a seed blessing and indoor planting ritual. Have a traditional breakfast of buns, ham, and eggs. Make natural egg dyes from herbs.
Color hard boiled eggs and add symbols for the Fertility God, the Goddess, the Sun God, unity, fire, water, agriculture, prosperity and growth, strength and wisdom, spring, love and affection, and protection.
Consecrate the eggs:
In the name of the Goddess of Spring, (name); and the ever-returning God of the Sun, (name); By the powers of the four elements -- earth, air, fire, and water; I do consecrate these eggs of Ostara..
Point the athame at the eggs, make the sign of the pentagram, and see the energy flow through the blade into the eggs, and say:
New life lies within as new life shall enter the soil. Let those who seek this life find it and consume it, for all life feeds on life.
The eggs may be hidden and an Ostara Egg Hunt commences.
Make pysanky and krashanky, magickal amulets of fertility, protection, and prosperity.
Make hot cross buns to honor the union of the earth and the sun for Spring. Slash the "X" with the bolline and bless the cakes.
Toss crushed eggshells into the garden and say:
For fairy, for flowers, for herbs in the bowers, The shells pass fertility with springtime flowers.
Wear green clothing.
Eat an egg you have empowered with a quality you desire.
At this time, witches cast spells for careers, relationships, and love. It's a time for planting new ideas. Seek harmony and balance in the incredible energy of the season, and project good health, good fortune, and confidence in achieving goals.
FOOD: Eggs! Spring lamb, cream and milk, bake bread with a decorated egg inside, spring salad, hot cross buns.
