Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza has inevitably drawn comparisons to other battles or wars, both modern and from the past. These comparisons are mostly used to make the case that Israel's operations in Gaza are the most destructive in history, or the deadliest in history.
Yet while the use of historical analogy may be tempting for armchair pundits, in the case of Israel's current war, the comparisons are often poorly cited, the data used inaccurate, and crucial context left out. Given the scale and context of an enemy purposely entrenched in densely populated urban areas, as well as the presence of tunnels, hostages, rockets, attackers that follow the laws of war while defenders purposely do not, and proximity between the frontlines and the home front, there is basically no historical comparison for this war.
Let's start with the context: After Hamas crossed into Israel on Oct. 7, murdering over 1,200 Israelis in brutal ways that included mutilation and sexual assaults as well as taking over 200 hostages back into Gaza, Israel formally declared a defensive war against Hamas in Gaza in accordance with international law and the United Nations charter. Since, the IDF estimates it has killed 10,000 Hamas operatives, while Hamas claims that the total number of casualties is 24,000 (Hamas does not distinguish civilian deaths from militant deaths).
Tumblr media
Hamas' strategy is to use Palestinian civilians as human shields, because their goal is not to defeat Israel's military or to hold terrain; it is far more sinister and medieval—to use the death and suffering of Palestinian civilians to rally international support to their cause and demand that Israel halt their war.
Meanwhile, Israel's war aims were more traditional: returning Israeli hostages, dismantling Hamas military capability, and securing their border to prevent another October 7 attack.
These goals required not one major urban battle but multiple. While Gaza is not the densest populated urban region on earth as many claim, it features over 20 densely-populated cities. And while the Israeli Defense Forces are engaged in fighting, Hamas has continued to launch over 12,000 rockets on nearly every day of the war from the combat area toward civilian-populated areas in Israel, literally over the heads of the attacking IDF, who it bears mentioning are fighting just a few miles from their homeland and the homes of their soldiers.
Put all of this together, this war is simply without precedent. Certainly, it cannot be compared to the host of other wars that have been used for comparison sake to paint Israel in an unflattering light.

Biden & Blinken are going for all the marbles (but first I share some personal stuff)
As the body count surges in Gaza, the US Administration is taking a chance at turning the war into a sudden catalyst for Oslo’s two-state solution and regional peace treaties First, I want to acknowledge that I have not posted anything here since the Hamas massacres of October 7. When it comes to personal writing on the horrible events of the past month, I have been tongue-tied. In my day job, I…

israel is built on top of the mass graves of palestinians, of entire towns burned to the ground, their inhabitants systematically slaughtered. the occupying settlers regularly arm themselves and rampage through palestinian neighborhoods. they march in the street chanting death to all arabs. israeli snipers shoot children and elders in the head and laugh about it afterwards. they assassinate journalists and doctors, bomb hospitals and apartment buildings. they openly call for a war of extermination and refer to palestinians as animals. israelis who oppose apartheid are jailed and anti zionist jewish people in the diaspora are labeled as self hating jews. peaceful protesting like BDS is criminalized in europe and the us.
but there are those who will look at these atrocities and say their heart weeps for both sides. they cry over genocidal fascists and pretend that makes them enlightened. they accuse those who unilaterally oppose apartheid and ethnic cleansing of extremism. their cowardice and complicity is heinous. never trust someone who will weep for the murderer while the victim is still bleeding out.

Like actually for real though, if your "activism" requires you to avoid the truth, understand that you've crossed a line from political belief into cult belief.
I don't care what outer dressings it wraps itself in; the moment you untether advocacy from actual fact-based praxis, you have crossed that line. There is no political position that is superior to the truth or worth embracing falsehoods over.
Please. People are dying. Wouldn't you rather advocate for their safety in the most effective way possible? Or is this not actually about them for you?

[ 📹 Al-Rasheed Street in the west of Gaza used to be one Gaza's major destinations before the Israeli occupation invaded and destroyed the entire neighborhood. 📸 Major destruction is also evident everywhere in sight in the al-Bureij Refugee Camp in western Gaza after the area became a focus for the occupation's bombardment.]

💥DAY 120: OVER 100 DEAD AND 165 WOUNDED IN 12 MASSACRES OVER THE PREVIOUS 24-HOURS💥
The Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) committed a total of 12 massacres of Palestinian families, killing 107 and wounding another 165, over the previous 24-hours on the 120th day of Israel's all-out war of genocide in the Gaza Strip.
At dawn on Saturday, a series of occupation airstrikes and artillery barrages targeting three residential homes in the cities of Deir al-Balah and Rafah, in the central and southern Gaza Strip respectively, resulted in the deaths of over 25 Palestinian civilians, mostly women and children.
At least one Palestinian was killed in the al-Nasr neighborhood of Gaza City after Israeli snipers fired on the civilian from the rooftops.
IOF artillery also shelled the civilian home of the Khairy Family near the al-Ramal neighborhood of Gaza City, resulting in the deaths of two civilians and the wounding of 8 others.
Occupation warplanes are also continuously bombing several neighborhoods to the west of Gaza City.
At the same time, the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) is reporting heavy shelling which targeted a residential home near the organization's headquarters in Khan Yunis City.
PRCS says it established a new, fifth encampment for the displaced, sheltering more than 70 families, in the Mawasi area of Khan Yunis governate.
Meanwhile, PRCS says 11 wounded among the displaced arrived at their headquarters in Khan Yunis after Israeli occupation soldiers fired smoke grenades into gatherings of displaced people.
PRCS also warned of, and condemned, occupation forces that continue shelling in the vicinity of their headquarters in Khan Yunis, which over the last 12 days of besiegement has resulted in the deaths of 43 Palestinian civilians, along with the wounding of another 153 others.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X, PRCS said they held the Israeli occupation responsible for the lives of its crews under siege alongside more than 100 patients currently receiving medical treatment at al-Amal Hospital in Khan Yunis, in addition to more than 7'000 displaced civilians sheltering around the compound and PRCS buildings.
As per the PRCS statement, "The PRCS renews its appeals to the International community and UN institutions to take immediate action to provide protection for our teams working in Khan Yunis, and to oblige the occupation to respect the Red Crescent emblem and protect civilians and medical and humanitarian workers in accordance with international humanitarian Law."
As a result of Israel's ongoing genocidal war in Gaza, the death toll now exceeds 27'238, with an additional 66'452 wounded as a result of Israeli bombing, shelling, machine gun and sniper fire since aggression began on October 7th.
Medical sources in Gaza also said thousands of civilians, mostly women and children, remain buried under the rubble of what used to be Gaza's residential neighborhoods, while local streets remain littered with the bodies of the dead.

The way Zionists keep going on about 7th October is so fucking pathetic. Like it's a single offensive by the people you've been brutalising for your State's entire existence*, that killed a tiny fraction of the non-combatants that you murder on a regular basis (both directly like through shootings and bombings as well as indirectly like through diseases and malnutrition) with a large proportion of said deaths being due to your own incompetent fucking military, and these idiots have the audacity to treat it as some unfathomable horror as if they weren't fucking constantly doing this sort of shit to Palestine. They're ignoring all of Israel's countless past atrocities and using the desperate response that said atrocities provoked as a cheap way to excuse the new atrocities. There's something so deeply sickening about using bullshit accusations of "genocide" to justify the intensification of an actual genocide. Like considering the circumstances Al-Quassam fighters consistently show an incredible amount of mercy and restraint to their oppressors, far more than Israel has ever shown to them
*longer if you count the terrorist violence of groups like Haganah and Irgun
