May 27th and 28th 2023
So I mentioned a book I was getting about plant iditification, and after having to exchange the original one I got for my first choice that I second guessed myself on, I now have a copy of Newcomb's Wildflower Guide by Lawrence Newcomb.
Tumblr media
I really like the key system for identification, because it's extremely easy to follow the steps to get to pages quickly. Which was the whole intention of the book, so we'll done lol.
Of course, because I thought I knew what the name of the plant I wanted to first identify with the book was, I might have been a bit too overconfident. With that confidence, Steven and I went for a walk down to the park to do some iditifying. And by Steven and I, I really just mean I was identifying because Steven was just there to keep me company. I'm not sure if it was more suspicious that my chonky goblin ass was squat down infront of a plant with a book for 40 minutes while a tall beadered man just kinda hovered around, or if it would have been better for me to be alone 😅 Either way I quickly realized I'm an idiot and should not have picked a plant known to be easy confused with like 5 other plants as my first attempt.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After about an hour I decided to accept mild defeat on this one. I'm confident it is not Poison Hemlock because there is no purple splotches on the stem at all. I decided that the description for Hemlock Parsley was probably correct, but one thing was giving me a hang up on it. The description specifically says "smooth stem, unspotted." And the bita leading up to the umbels are all smooth, but the main stem of the plant is covered in little hairs. It also says "Cold swamps, wet woods, and riverbanks. Summer and Fall." There is a ton of this stuff around the area which is mostly a wet wooded area, right near the river. Though it's still currently spring in Ontario. It's been pretty warm so perhaps that's why it's already blooming, but it's just added another layer of confusion for me.
So of course I decided to consult an app. PictureThis insists it's Cow Parsley, but looking that up online as it's not in the book, it says there is purple in the stems and it's got fine hairs all over. It's definitely got hairs, but no traces of purple except maybe a bit in the joints?
Tumblr media
Though the flowering time is April to June so that lines up. Over all I'm going to agree with the app, because I might just be misinterpreting where the hairs stop in terms of whats considered hair or smooth. But hey, botanical tumblr feel free to chime in lmao
I have no intention of eating or preparing this plant in any way, or really any plants I identify, I just found the concept interesting and my little ADHD goblin brain has hyperfixated on it now. But I do know the importance of being 100% sure of your identification if you are foraging wild plants. For me right now I'm just bothered that I was unsuccessful on my very first test 😒 But I refuse this to be another "I wasn't immediately good at it so I hate it and refuse to do it again." thing.
I'm going to try a few more times in the garden today I think. See if I can identify anything here despite them not being wild flowers. I'd like to try on what I'm fairly certain are poppies, because that's what my mom says they are. But I don't know if they'll be in there since I don't think they are wild. We'll see, as soon as the sun moves a bit farther along in the sky because when I was out taking photos od the raspberries flowers, just standing there for 2 minutes I was already roasting.
Speaking of raspberry flowers...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's quite a few, but I'm a bit worried since they're looking a bit dried up? I should look that up since I don't know if that means they're fecked or they're gonna be fruiting soon 🤷
Also some other flower progress for this update, it seems the peony bush has one. single. bloom. Which I suppose is a 100% increase from last year. I'll be checking it every day cause if I miss it blooming, I'm gonna be pissssssed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lastly my stargazer lily is still beetle free, praise the developer. I'm just gonna keep checking it for eggs and powdering it till it blooms.
Tumblr media
Thats all I've got for now. Have a blooming good day! Thats terrible lmao I'm sorry.

Worldbuilding Tidbits: ThunderClan Territory
General description: ThunderClan calls the thick, rich forest in the southeast. Trees include alders, oaks, beechs, birchs, aspens, cedars, elms, maples, and sycamores. Undergrowth includes holly bushes, honeysuckles, laurels, dogwood, witch hazel, hemlocks, ferns, bracken, lilacs, dandelions, daffodils, wintergreens, boxwoods, peonies, thorns, vines, moss, poppies, and brambles. The canopy is fairly thick, but not so much that sunlight is blocked out, and streams that branch out from the river help moisturize the plants. Towards the thunderpath that cuts between ThunderClan and ShadowClan, the land becomes rocky and steep, as the road inclines from a mountain.
Camp: A shallow, sandy ravine that’s shaded by a thick canopy. The dens are made of cave in the camp walls, burrows, and bushes intertwined with brambles and vines
Common prey: Mice, voles, shrews, blackbirds, starlings, magpies, sparrows, robins, cardinals, bluejays, grackles, grouse, pheasants, doves, pigeons, woodpeckers
Rare prey: Turkeys, falcons, hawks, eagles, ducks, rabbits, moorhens, eggs
Common threats: Coyotes, falling branches, foxes (they usually only target lone apprentices or kits, but they become a lot more aggressive and desperate in the winter), badgers (usually only if you're stupid enough to bother them, but they also like to go after lone or inexperienced apprentices), adders at snakerocks, wild dogs
Landmarks:
The Owl Tree is a tall poplar with a hollow in the middle of the trunk. Generations of owls have lived there as it’s close to mouse nests, and warriors usually follow the current tenant to find easy prey.
The Sandy Hollow is a hollow in the land that’s filled with soft, sandy dirt. It’s used as a place for apprentices to practice battle moves since the dirt is soft enough to not hurt upon impacting it
The Tunnel is a tunnel below the thunderpath that ShadowClan uses to get to and from gatherings. ThunderClan doesn’t mind this as long as they just use the tunnel for that purpose, but there is some hostility over the herb that grows there, Milkweed. Since it’s rare to find and is very beneficial for nursing queens, there’s been quite a few border scraps over who gets the herbs
The Shaded Brook is a narrow stream that branches off from the river. It gains its name due to the amount of overhanging, ferns, bracken, and mullien growing here. Cats come to get a drink of water and druids come here to gather herbs.
Sunningrocks is a contested piece of territory between ThunderClan and RiverClan that’s placed right by the river on the edge of ThunderClan territory. It’s not only a good place to sun, but it’s a good place for mice and water voles to nest between the rocks, making it a good hunting spot. However, the main reason it’s so fought over is because of land rights.The patch of land that Sunningrocks rests on used to belong to RiverClan when it was an island, but slowly the river grew smaller, leaving the rocks on ThunderClan’s territory. And they’ve bickered and battled over it since
Adjacent to Sunningrocks are wide expanses of meadows. They don't have an official name, but they're a popular date spot due to the sheer amount of colorful wildflowers and the clear view of the sky
The Alder Grove a patch of the forest filled with, you guessed it, alders. The thick canopy provides plentiful shade and the leaf litter is very soft. Friend groups like to hang around here and it's not uncommon to see cats wrestling in the thick leaf carpet
Tallpines is the only place in the forest where pine trees are plentiful. Every three summers the tree-eaters cut down the trees and take them to the treecutplace, but between those periods, it’s a good spot for prey.
The Treecutplace is where the pines from Tallpines are brought to be cut up for twoleg use. It’s usually avoided due to being so close to twoleg areas
The Twolegplace is a small yet bustling town. Warriors rarely go anywhere near the border, let alone in the town. The town borders the forests with a tall fence.
Snakerocks is a pile of rocks that is much like sunningrocks, but the stones are much steeper and bigger. Many herbs like Dill, Goldenseal, Peppermint, and Echinacea grow here, but the rocks are also swarmed with adders. It’s best to keep younger apprentices from here, as they don’t know the danger yet.
The Great Sycamore is the tallest, oldest tree in the territory, and is used by apprentices to see if someone is chicken by daring the newest apprentices to climb to the very top of the branches.
The Abandoned Cabin is an old, run down log cabin that has been overgrown with moss, vines, and other plants, including a birch growing right in the center. It’s considered a sacred place by the ThunderClan druids as it’s a good place to grow herbs
The Thunderpath is a long, busy road that separates ThunderClan territory from ShadowClan. It’s considered very dangerous since it’s usually very busy, so most cats avoid it

Gardening is the handiest excuse for being a philosopher. Nobody guesses, nobody accuses, nobody knows, but there you are, Plato in the peonies, Socrates force-growing his own hemlock. A man toting a sack of blood manure across his lawn is kin to Atlas letting the world spin easy on his shoulder.

I was tagged by @rickie-the-storyteller in an incorrect quotes shipping game. The link to the post I was tagged in is here. The link to the generator is here. I don't usually do shipping, but I have a couple canon relationships in Love Corrupts Fresh Lilies (Rafflesia and Hemlock as well as Jade and Ferphasia).
Rafflesia & Hemlock:
Rafflesia: I am so cool. I am an absolute Chad. I am the epitome of coolness and awesomeness—  Hemlock: Hi.  Rafflesia: *melts down in a flustered heap of softness*
~~~~~
Hemlock: Are you ready to commit?  Rafflesia: Like, a crime or a relationship?
~~~~~
Rafflesia: I owe you one.  Hemlock: That’s ok. You can just date me and we’ll call it even.
~~~~~
Hemlock: BE A BETTER PERSON!  Rafflesia: WHY?!  Hemlock: BECAUSE SOMEONE NEEDS TO HAVE MORALS IN THIS RELATIONSHIP, AND IT SURE AS FUCK AIN'T GONNA BE ME, SWEETHEART!
~~~~~
Rafflesia, sweating: Hemlock, there’s something I need to ask you-  Hemlock: Finally! You’re proposing!  Rafflesia: How’d you know?  Hemlock: Rafflesia, you’ve dropped the ring five times during dinner.  Hemlock: I even picked it up once.
~~~~~
Hemlock: Rafflesia and I are no longer friends.  Rafflesia: HEMLOCK THAT IS THE WORST WAY TO TELL PEOPLE THAT WE’RE DATING!
~~~~~
Hemlock: Valentine’s day is just a consumerist holiday that holds no real value other than drive people insane buying heart shaped chocolates for their significant others and pos-  Rafflesia: I wrote you a poem.  Hemlock, already crying: You did?
Jade & Ferphasia:
Jade: Are you sure Ferphasia's even gay? She barely looked at me!
~~~~~
Ferphasia: Look at me straight in the eyes and tell me the truth, Jade!  Jade: You can’t expect me to look into your eyes and be straight.
~~~~~
Ferphasia: Being gay is a constant battle between "I wish to sit on a window bench with my lover, our legs tangling as we listen to the birds" and "Hey, let's go throw rocks at fascists" and I think that's very sexy of us.  Jade: If the window's open and you time it right, you can do both.
~~~~~
Ferphasia: So you like cats?  Jade: Yeah.  Ferphasia: *tries to impress them by slowly pushing a glass off the table*
~~~~~
Jade: Since we're in a relationship now, your clothes are my clothes too. Don't ask me why I have your shirt on, this is our shirt.  Ferphasia: Fine, but when I come strutting in with your fuzzy socks I don't want to hear shit.
~~~~~
Ferphasia: Hey, random question, what are your favorite flowers?  Jade: Peonies, why?  Ferphasia: Jade: Were you going to get me flowers?  Ferphasia: Jade: Ferphasia: ᶦᵗ’ˢ ᵃ ᵖᵒˢˢᶦᵇᶦˡᶦᵗʸ
~~~~~
Ferphasia: I want to kiss you. Jade, not paying attention: What? Ferphasia: I said if you die I won't miss you.
This is certainly new, but overall was an enjoyable experience.

NETHERBRIDGE, OCTOBER 3RD, 1813.  4:13 pm.LETHE LAKE.
tw: drowning.
It has been two hours since the search party for the Couple has set out to track them and bring them to the Holy Sanctum to be wedded. Some attendees returned to the church an hour after the search had begun, hoping that the elusive betrotheds would simply walk  in on their own. But, minutes passed and turned to hours and the sun had already started to fade, a promise of a dusk approaching too hastily for anyone’s liking, especially those of BELLADONNA NYMPH, JESSAMINE DAEMON, DRAGONBLOOD CETUS and DANDELION SPHINX. The four of them had been among the last ones to return, arriving shortly after VIOLET GORGON, LAVENDER ARACHNE, ORCHID BANSHEE and CALLA CENTAUR, full 13 minutes behind the agreed deadline.
But, the pair was nowhere to be found. What started as an annoyance and a possible scandal, now turned into worry and fear. Where in Heaven's name are they? Are they hiding?  Are they on a run? Has something happened to them? Hiding and running way never made any sense to anyone in attendance, but the hour is ticking late and people are desperate enough to think of anything.
However, there is something no one could have predicted or thought of.
The wind blows cold, rustling the leaves and it is VIOLET GORGON, HEMLOCK SIREN and IRIS VAMPIRE that turn towards the gates of the Holy Sanctum, waiting, listening. No one dares to breathe or even move when a loud, ear shattering scream echoes from the forest of Dendros. TULIP CHIMAERA is the first to gather her wits and reacts before anyone else - hastily approaching the gates in time to greet a SHEPHERD BOY shouting and running towards the Sanctum as if he is being pursued by wolves.
“Dead!” THE BOY screams, approaching DANDELION SPHINX and clinging to the priest for comfort and reassurance. “The young mistress! In the lake! I was getting water for my sheep when –” he pauses, gasping for air; “Good Father I swear to God and all the angels in Heaven above us that ain’t natural! Young master Crowley was there! Hair white as snow, it is! Horrible thing! He was holding the young mistress’ hand and – and when he’s seen me, good Father, he wanted my help! Said he’s being hunted! Said he watched it drown the young mistress!”
A loud, horrified gasp captures the attention of the crowd and they all turn to BELLADONNA NYMPH, hands covering her mouth and staring at THE BOY. JESSAMINE DAEMON rushed to DANDELION SPHINX and grabbed THE BOY’s shoulder, turning him to face them, eyes wide with terror: “Dead? My daughter? Dead?”
“Dead. I saw it with my own two eyes. Young master Crowley begged me to save him, but then he screamed and took off deep into the forest.” THE BOY paused and his attention returned back to DANDELION SPHINX. “That’s when I saw it, good Father. It ain’t of this world. A woman, all in white.  I couldn’t see her face, she was wearing a veil, but she just looked at me and then she was gone! Just like that. Gone! I didn’t even blink I swear to God, she was there and the next moment… not there anymore. I ran here the moment she vanished! It ain’t natural, it ain’t of this world…” THE BOY begins to ramble - but no one is paying attention to him anymore.
The guests all look to each other, some in disbelief, the others wondering if it is a practical joke played by the Couple. No one dares to speak for a moment, but ACONITUM FURY huffs and frowns at the crowd.
“What are we waiting for? We should go to Lethe lake at once! Whether or not this… apparition is real, we shall see. THE BOY is at the edge of his sanity, so something must have happened. If nothing, we should see what is going on.”
“A murder ghost, maybe?” DATURA UNICORN snorts in retort, but PEONY WEREWOLF is the one who bites back: “Hold your tongue! If young lady Blackwood is indeed dead, you will be sorry for your tone.”
“Now, now. We don’t know what really happened and what we will see. I suggest we all go there, together, as my dear cousin already suggested.” IRIS VAMPIRE interferes, but there is a hint of unease in the tone of his voice.
The company agrees and, accompanied by THE BOY who does not feel comfortable to be left alone, sets towards the lake. He told them, in great detail, how he stumbled upon THE BRIDE and THE GROOM, but at first didn’t recognise THE GROOM as young master Crowley’s hair had turned white from either shock or terror. The young lady Blackwood was half ashore and half in the lake, but he admits he could not see her face. The repeated how THE GROOM seemed panicked, saying over and over how he’s being watched and hunted by something he cannot escape from. THE BOY said how THE GROOM screamed at something and took off deeper in the woods and that he’s seen THE WHITE LADY look at him and then vanish. The company is divided - some believe his words, some don’t and they begin to quarrel among themselves –
They reach Lethe lake and JESSAMINE DAEMON lets out a heartbreaking scream. BELLADONNA NYMPH, ACONITUM FURY and IRIS VAMPIRE rush to her side, followed by DANDELION SPHINX, DRAGONBLOOD CETUS and LAVENDER ARACHNE, but they are all struck with mortification when CALLA CENTAUR wads in the lake and turns over the body.
It is true.
THE BRIDE IS DEAD.
THE GROOM IS MISSING.
But, there is no apparition, nothing to vouch for the rest of THE BOY’S testimony. Yet, HEMLOCK SIREN, VIOLET GORGON, PEONY WEREWOLF, ORCHID BANSHEE, YARROW HYDRA and ROSE HARPY are uneasy, instinctively looking at each other. Something is not right, but no one can pinpoint exactly what is wrong.
“My brother is still missing.” ORCHID BANSHEE quietly speaks, interrupted by JESSAMINE DAEMON’S sobbing.
“We should all go looking for him. It is getting dark and the forest is not as safe once the sun sets.” TULIP CHIMAERA offered, but she is aware not everyone will agree to follow along - JESSAMINE DAEMON the first. However, those who joined the search and those who had decided to stay with JESSAMINE DAEMON agreed to meet in the HOLY SANCTUM at dusk, in two hours time.
