The Trouble with Robson…

So… I’ve seen some discourse on this site about James Robson… and I want in lol.

I’ve got a lot of thoughts about this man, and based on everything I’ve read from other Oz fans, I might have an unpopular opinion.

Please don’t get me wrong! Season 2-Season 5 he was a tremendous piece of shit. Like in every way possible it is to be a piece of shit. But that said I have two points: 1) that’s what makes him an good CHARACTER, not a good person, and 2) a redemption arc doesn’t mean that person is automatically forgiven, but are going down a better path and MIGHT be forgiven for their actions at a later date. It is with this, your honor, that I submit that Robson’s redemption arc was actually one of the better plot lines in Oz. (Please don’t hate me lol)

Okay, so Robson season two, pretty easy to characterize. He’s a Nazi. He’s violent. He’s a rapist. Very easy to hate. Season three, he’s lieutenant to Vern Schillinger in the Aryan Brotherhood. He boxes and such. In season four, he’s a menace, coming into his own character. He threatens on his own and has his own plot lines now. Season five is more of the same, at first, he rapes Peter Schibetta, he tries to ruin Beecher’s life, etc. He commits one of the more heinous of his crimes in my book when he kills the young Muslim man in the store room. A long, drawn out process that James is smiling through. He LOVES violence. More than anything he seems like he was made for prison. Then he learns about his gums, makes racist remarks to the doctor, one thing leads to another, he has black man gums and gets kicked out of the brotherhood.

He’s destitute and alone, which is all he deserves. But even Kareem Said finds pity for him and says “God is trying to teach you something. Please be smart enough to learn.”. What can even God attempt to teach someone like James Robson? He does what he needs to survive. He joins Cutler and agrees to be his prag. Here’s where some views from other Oz fans and I start to diverge. You look at videos on YouTube, many of the comments you’ll find say “good, he deserved it.”. The best argument I heard for this was actually from Funky Frog Bait on YouTube talking about misgendering murderers. Many people misgendered the nonbinary Nashville shooter. Why would you respect the pronouns for a person that horrible? Because, as Funky Frog Bait said in their video, it revolves around your opinion of gender as a whole. If you can just revoke someone’s preferred pronouns when they’re bad people, how “bad” does a trans person have to be to not have their pronouns respected? People of differing “politics” (morals) say different things, but if we apply this argument to Robson’s situation, I think it has to do with one’s overall view of rape. How “bad” does someone have to be before being raped is considered a reasonable punishment? For me, it’s never. For me, just as in never revoking someone’s right to their preferred pronouns, I also think it’s never justifiable to rape someone. So, no, I don’t think Robson deserved to be raped, even though he was a serial rapist himself, because there’s no situation where I think rape is a justifiable response. People may disagree with me, but I think it’s a slippery slope when you can deem someone as deserving of rape.

We learn during this time, as he’s being beaten and abused sexually by Cutler, that James was beaten and abused by his father as a kid. He confirms that this occurred while he was only five years old. His first introduction to life and sex was violence. Maybe this gives you sympathy for him, as it did me, but maybe you say fuck him, it doesn’t excuse anything. But I don’t think that it was meant to be an excuse, I think it was meant to be an EXPLANATION. I think we were learning how he became James Robson of unit B, not justifying his actions as James Robson of unit B. He was a child and the person he was supposed to trust most in this world gave him very harsh lessons very early on: no one cares about you, and do what you need to do to survive. He becomes demure and pitiful in Sister Pete’s office. One line that stuck with me was “here I am, 35 years old and I have nowhere to run.”. He’s been running his whole life. Running away from an abusive father and running away from his own actions. “I shame to think of what I’ve done. Look on it again, I dare not.” Is Cutler’s line as MacBeth in the play. It is an apt line for James. He’s been running from his own actions for as long as he could remember. Like I said, none of this justifies the lives he’s ruined and taken, but it does explain the inter-workings of a character that was pretty static for four seasons. That he survives. He tells Sister Peter Marie that all he does is run from things. I truly believe that some of the reason he was able to be as ruthless as he was is because he doesn’t let himself think about his own actions.

Finally season 6! He kills Cutler with some kinky play, joins the brotherhood, and it seems like he’s back, right? Only when he sees his wife, we see some of the shame come back. Some of the embarrassment of being taken in that way. If he feels this way now, he felt this way for however long his dad was abusing him. He loses it with her for calling him a “cock sucker”, which CLEARLY he’s embarrassed/ashamed about. He hurts her, and immediately, instantly, feels bad about it. I love learning the morality of immoral characters. With everything he’s done, why was hurting his wife crossing a line? Because she trusts him, just like little James trusted his dad. I think, personally, that he sees himself as her personal protector. Since he couldn’t protect himself, he became the protector for her, and then for Vern, but James isn’t stupid enough to think Vern can’t take care of himself. I think hurting his wife tore him up so much because he remembers when he relied on his dad for everything, and his father took advantage of his state.

Then he finds out he has AIDS. He joins a support group for rape survivors. They talk about their experiences and James listens to all of them. He thanks them towards the end, saying it was good to “hear it from both sides” which we know is something he knew already since he was at least five. But hearing those stories, all of which are upsetting but some are straight gruesome, puts FORCES him to face his actions. He can’t run anymore, his lifestyle caught up with him. Am I saying he deserves AIDS? 🤷‍♀️ Chissà. Who’s to say? He has it though. There’s a deleted scene where he lets Clarence rape him (I understand “lets” and “rape” don’t make much sense together but I don’t think coerced consent is consent at all so it’s still assault), and it gives Clarence AIDS. Robson says something interesting, with his classic smile on his face. “Retribution. It’s all about retribution.”. That’s what Oz is about. Retribution. It should be about Rehabilitation, but it’s all about Retribution. This is where James’ story ends on the show. With him moving to unit F, the AIDS unit. Finally, even if only physically, is he forced to face his actions.

This is why I think his story was beautifully written. He’s just a meathead in the beginning, but we learn about his morality -because he does have a code, even if it’s not a good one-, his past, and his future. They took a character that was frankly very flat and gave us a wide enough view on his life and character to confuse our anger into sympathy into more anger and into sadness. I don’t know if anyone else felt this way but my heart just dropped when he mentioned his dad. James Robson never stood a chance. He was a monster in training since he was five. But no one deserves to be raped. (A good reference is Adam Gunzel who was a BIG prick… but never deserved that shit.) Anyway these are just some of my thoughts on one of the most interesting characters in Oz (to me at least) and gave us an actual character out of a plotless muscle man.

One thing I think we can all agree on:

Retribution. It’s all about retribution.

Renarin Kholin- The Stormlight Archive

Qualifications:

Renarin is canonically autistic and gay (or at least MLM).

He's canonically autistic + has epilepsy, and he's been confirmed to be gay and have a crush on a male character (which will.be explored more in future books)

Propaganda:

Renarin is one of few characters in epic fantasy literature who's canonically neurodivergent or queer - it's rare enough to just see one of those things! He is also the best, just all around. He is so reckless and has such a strong moral compass: like he ran to help fight a giant crab monster with no weapons, no armor, and no training; he jumped into a 4vs1 duel to help his brother, with no armor, no training, and a sword that deals him psychic damage anytime he holds it.

He's autistic and gay; disability is a big part of his story; he's so much of an outcast that he was the first person to join his world's extra-marginalized order of sinister-but-not-evil magic users; and while he's quiet and self-contained, he's full to the brim with suppressed rage. Sidelined second son and quasi-cursed prophet. I fully believe he can take this tournament by storm.

Renarin is autistic, epileptic, and queer as the day is long. As a kid, he struggled to win his dad's approval due to his inability to fight as well as his abled brother -- but these days his dad's wised up and realized that Renarin actually kicks ass. When Renarin gets magic powers, he isn't "cured"; he's still epileptic, he's still autistic, and he still has a crush on the strapping young alien lad in his squad. Not only does he break down class barriers by hanging out with ex-slave humans (he's the prince of a major kingdom), he breaks racial barriers by dating an alien who's entire race was, until recently, enslaved by humans. Overall, he's a complete badass who is getting more confident, more appreciated, and more gay with every book in the series.

i don’t remember what it is (or if that’s even said) but his disability gives her trouble walking some days and on others makes it so they can’t get out of bed. bisexual &nonbinary omnigender!

listen. i love him. oh my god i love aer. their disability and queerness are both central to the narrative. due to it being disabled, she is not taken seriously where he comes from. xe has given up on insisting on its gender being respected - every time thon tries, its taken as a sign he is having a bad day symptoms wise, which in turn is taken as though she has never grown up past being eight years old. through the game proper, it hides hir disability most of the time. to ask for help is to let someone know. and throughout their entire life, everyone who knew has treated him as stupid - perhaps not always, but everyone has. this is why she doesnt really want to get out of the anomaly; this is the first time fae has had friends who dont know, and therefore dont have "a reason" to infantilize it. star hides everything behind a chipper demeanour. well, that demeanour isnt entirely a lie; she is really silly and pleasant - one of my favourite things he says in the entire game is "isnt blue super bad for computers? like blue balls of death or something?". upon being asked "where do you come from that computers have balls?", they respond "well, how do they reproduce if they dont?" in conclusion. Loam my beloved.

TMNT Headcannons from across the universe!

These are just headcannons I have for characters that NO MATTER which universe they’re in, I truly believe these hc are real in my heart.

• Raph curses like a sailor (Yes even your precious rottmnt!Raph). He is usually 101% done with whatever bullshit they’ve gotten themselves into and has no need or want to put a filter up because of it. Though he tries not to curse too much if Master Splinter or small children are around, he’ll slip up once or twice if he gets too frustrated.

• On the flip side: Leo NEVER curses. But it’s not because he’s the older brother/leader and wants to be an example for his brothers (especially not rottmnt!Leo). But because he’s a little shit and likes watching his brothers cringe at whatever nonsense he uses to replace swear words.

• Leo: Aw shucks! This really ruffles my freathers! Looks like we really go ourselves in a pickle this time fellas!

• Raph, Donnie, and Mikey, sobbing: Please for the love of god just say FUCK!!!

• All of the bros can skateboard but Mikey is the best at it.

• Donnie’s always got to be a little messeed up in the head, mainly because his morality is a fucking rulet wheel. Like he can be the sweetest person you know but if the situation does not benefit his friends or family he does NOT care for it.

• It has been stated before many times that Mikey has the most raw talent amongst his brothers and I truly believe that if Leo hadn’t stepped up as leader Splinter would have assigned it to Mikey. But like also Mikey absolutely DOES NOT want to be leader.

• I firmly believe that Raph is good with kids; like if it were possible for him to live a normal life I wholeheartedly believe he would be a kindergarten teacher.

• Donnie does NOT like kids but kids seem to like him for some reason.

• Leo is okay with kids, he’s just really awkward around them and doesn’t know how he should act.

• Mikey absolutely adores kids and they adore him right back! He doesn’t speak to them in that condisending way that most adults do as if children are stupid and don’t understand anything happening around them. He talks to them like any other person and respects their opinions and ideas. If possible he’d probably have the biggest family out of all his brothers.

• Hates pineapple on pizza: Raph, Donnie, Casey

• Likes pineapple on pizza: Mikey, Leo, Splinter, April

• Casey Jones would NEVER in a million years EVER be a cop! (I don’t fucking care what the Bayverse movies say CASEY JONES WOULD NEVER BE A FUCKING COP!!!)

• Casey is trans and bisexual, always! Look me in the eyes and tell me I’m wrong!

• Even if she isn’t a reporter/journalist in every universe, April O’Neil is always gunna be a bit nosey by nature and know ALL the gossip.

• April is either gunna be Bisexual or AroAce, no inbetween!

• With that being said, if April and Casey aren’t “romantically” involved with each other they are QPP because they’re soulmates and I love their dynamic together.

• Raph and Casey are also QPP! They are ALWAYS going to be best friends in EVERY universe!

• Leo is bisexual, always! Look me in the eyes and tell me I’m wrong!

• Mikey is pansexual and genderfluid/agender/genderqueer/idk they got something going on with their gender cuz it sure as hell ain’t cis!

• Donnie is nonbinary because he has no time for silly things like gender, only science! His sexuality is a squiggly line hand wave that’s somewhere on the ace spectrum and your guess is as good as mine.

• Raph goes by he/they pronouns. That’s all anybody has ever gotten out of him and if they ask he always replies with: my gender is who fucking cares and my sexuality is who gives a shit!

• Much like April, Splinter fall under the line of either being bisexual or Aroace, no inbetween!

• Splinter may be pretty bad with technology sometimes but he absorbes languages like a fucking sponge. At minimum he knows at least 6 different languages.

• If given the choice to either save the world or his sons Splinter will always ALWAYS choose his boys. No hesitation what-so-ever! This rat man would rather fist fight god themselves then ever even CONSIDER losing his babies! He’s not the most perfect parent and he can be a bit strict at times but he loves his children so, so much! To him they ARE his entire world!

• With proper motivation Baxter Stockman is the most terrifying villain in the TMNT universe because the man is fucking insane and doesn’t care if he has to hurt himself or others to meet his goal. We do not thank our lucky stars enough that he is a coward prone to being bullied by other overzealous villains to do their grunt work. The world would have been destroyed ten times over if it were not for that.

• I feel like all the turtles’ troubles could have been avoided if the Shredder would have just taken some anger management classes, yoga, weed, something and like vibed for at least 5 minutes. Like if he took the time to think over his plans more than once he’d kind of be like: Yeah okay, no, this is fucking stupid!

Hey so I personally think Gerard is def not cis, I believe that 100% in my heart, and I’m trans and nonbinary myself,,,, however I don’t get to label them. calling somebody by pronouns and gendered words that they haven’t claimed is wrong, whether or not they are cis, trans, gnc, or gender conforming. It’s simply not appropriate or respectful, and certainly not funny. Find a better schtick. They are a real person, not a character.

Gerard has stated that they go by he/they and that’s all. many others seem obsessed with calling them “she/her” because Gerard is gnc and likely not cis. It’s like they/he isn’t trans enough for y’all ??? And you have no idea how they might feel about she/her pronouns. You don’t know them, and neither do I. We don’t get to define them.

Getting misgendered is typically an unpleasant experience for anyone, especially when people seem extra allergic to respecting people who use they pronouns. and it’s a common stereotype that AMAB nonbinary people are really just trans women/trans fem lite, and also thereby automatically comfortable with she/her. It also comes off as tired old 2000s stereotyping. God forbid a he/they be gnc, better excessively gender their fashion choices and even personal identity?? It’s insane how young people believe that making someone’s pronouns a joke is not intensely transphobic and homophobic. I guess some of you have had the great privilege of growing up in a very different time and place than I have ://///

If they ever come out and claim she/her pronouns I will immediately and joyfully (!!!) use she/her for them but that has not happened. I will also not have regretted using only the pronouns they have asked to be used up until that point. Please use their pronouns and stop calling them ms., a girl, a woman, etc. This is a BASIC gesture of respect and a core tenant of trans activism that extends to everyone, including celebrities, cis people, and people you do or don’t like.

I don’t care if you are also trans. I don’t care if “he’ll never see it anyways” (I guarantee you he’s put up with this plenty in person and for all you know, could’ve contributed to negative feelings about himself or his gender, or be the reason he hasn’t really publicly defined himself!!!). plenty of people who have the same pronouns and similar gender expression as Gerard (me) have to watch him get misgendered for fun by the mcr fandom and homophobes alike and it SUCKS!! DONT MISGENDER THE CANON VESSELS. I dont care what you do with ocs! Go wild! But for the love of the gods stop using binary pronouns for canon vessels (the knight, the hollow knight, broken vessel, greenpath vessel, etc) AU or not. They are never referred to as anything other than ‘it’ or ‘they’ ingame and TC has confirmed them to be genderless so STICK TO THAT. He/him is not the default. It/they pronouns are not placeholders. Start using they/them if you dont know someone’s pronouns. Cis people have so much representation already, stop taking it from the nonbinary!

AND STOP MAKING EXCUSES. If you make an au and one of the main things is that the canon vessels have binary pronouns? That says A LOT about you! And i do not want you interacting with me! 

I understand some languages do not have genderless pronouns and it can be hard to learn in English, but just. Please dont use that as an excuse and then make no effort to change. Try best you can, and if you mess up, correct yourself/accept others correcting you. 

You can memorize game lore, you can memorize someone’s pronouns.

im so smad over how most things try to go out of their way to be like ‘oh well its up for interpretation’ or try to explain away nonbinary characters’ genders in a way that makes sense so that its not them being nonbinary, its Just that they arent male or female because this thing!

like come on you had the ball then you fuckin dropped it by saying people can use whatever pronouns and while im sure there are nonbinary people who use every pronoun it sucks when the canon explicitly uses they and then people just. paste their own idea of gender onto them like theyre some sort of blank slate when they arent. and even if they WERE it wouldnt give people a free pass to just paste whatever pronouns onto them?

like...i see so many people who have no idea that characters like wx-78 from dont starve are nonbinary because their identity is erased so much when the game refers to them as explicitly they/them and uses mx. as a gender neutral title. frisk from undertale is one of (few) nonbinary human characters. they used they/them pronouns the ENTIRE game and at the end the twist was hey! frisk is THEIR OWN PERSON. and even if they were a stand-in for the player, what makes autonomy = getting gendered correctly?? you’d still correct yourself if a cat or a dog gets misgendered, why the fuck cant the same courtesy be given to nonbinary people? binary people’s genders are not ‘up for interpretation’ all the time because people would get real fucking salty about it. from what ive seen its only nonbinary characters and on occasion binary trans people as an excuse to misgender them. (also, chara, kris, monster kid, napstablook, and several others from undertale are nonbinary but get similar erasure because people gender them as well) with warframe, xaku came out i was so excited because hell yeah they look so cool and have the aesthetics that are right up my alley...and then people used binary pronouns or used it even if their pronouns were Right There in their desc and while people use it pronouns for warframes a lot its like. you use ember’s and excalibur umbra’s just fine? whats stopping you with xaku?? (not even gonna start with nezha or else i will get actually angry at how people treat him)

there’s an argument to be had over them being a robot/described as broken/made of multiple parts but...the canon still uses they? so use they? fucks sake?

idk it just...gets me tilted at the towers or whatever but i legitimately hope that there’s a nonbinary character that doesnt have any like explanation for them being nonbinary and they just...are. give me nonhuman characters who are like ‘yeah im nonbinary! i use they/them and i dont have an explanation behind why. i just am’. give me more (sorely needed) human nonbinary characters that are treated with respect and not just referred to as whatever pronoun Works For You. please god give me characters that are like ‘hey, i am this thing! specifically!’ and not dodge the word by using everything but the word nonbinary.
