Dumb rant about art incoming. Something about the character design of Pixar's Elemental disgusts me. It's not just the generic belongs-in-a-heartburn-ad look of the female lead or the Generic Pixar Man (water edition) look of the male lead. It's the fact that the earth and air elementals, almost all of whom are background characters, are stout and large and round, while the protagonists (and certain water and fire side characters) still follow the obnoxious Pixar "slimthick woman, slightly out-of-shape (but not fat!!) man" rule of character design. And they're all just so, so boring. Look at this and try to feel anything.

More mentally ill characters in sci-fi, in fantasy, in romance and fun and high stakes situations and everything in between, as the heroes, as complex individuals, multifaceted and treated with respect, not having their needs and differences ignored or skirted around but, again, not having them be their only trait or plot point/entire premise! Please, I'm begging, on my hands and knees, there's a place for these topics and characters in realistic, reflective and literary fiction, yeah, but there's also a place in those magical, mystical, action packed, mysterious and alien worlds, give them to ME

I really like how william baffin and martin frobisher both survived the most unhinged conditions of just sailing off the side of any map they had access to into some of the most famous for killing colonisers terrain on earth possible and returned to great fanfare only to both instantly die badly in completely unrelated wars because apparently neither queen elizabeth nor james i could resist seeing what their most famous explorer would do if they were suddenly sent into some random battle somewhere

I'm honestly baffled by how many people seem to get "Manfred is freethinker, Ascalon is sheeple" from Babel and "Manfred outsmarted Hoederer" from 14. I can at least begrudgingly understand the former, because the narrative goes out of its way to invalidate Ascalon's every decision so you need to be invested enough to take a step back and see it's actually bullshit, but with the latter W outright mocks Manfred for acting exactly like Hoederer predicted, and this is despite Ulsulah's advanced warnings about the situation on Lifebone. Hell, the fact that Hoederer doesn't even try to fight (presumably because he is acting as a bait and this minimizes his potential injuries) and complete lack of reaction from everyone else suggest that everything was still proceeding according to plan B (separate Manfred from his men so you don't fight them at the same time), even if plan A (intercept him) got Damazti'd.

i saw several people mentioning how stupid or clueless gicheol was and like. that wasn't bad writing per se, that was his character. gicheol is consistently blinded by what he wants and loves, from the moment we meet him in the first episode and he loses taeho. gicheol only managed to stay on his path until he met junmo as seungho, who posed a connection back to the person gicheol was closest to and loved the most. when seungho arrives, he becomes blind to everyone else in the union, he forgets his ties to his old school friends and refuses to let anyone but seungho rise through the ranks and get closer to him, get open care from him, get respect from him. when he meets euijeong again, he becomes blind to any semblance of sense and reason. he is this clueless because he loves more than he thinks. he follows his heart and the moment it became involved with two other people, it stopped being involved with the union. several people around gicheol mention it (all three of his chiefs do at one point, even some of the cops do) and he says it himself before he dies. to protect seungho and euijeong, he gave up everything else. gicheol could never win this. he lost the moment he chose sentimentality over the business. but the thing is, he chose sentimentality over the business from the very first moment we meet him.

Again, people hate the messiness but why??? It's entertaining. I love the High Lords meeting, like what a SHIT SHOW of individuals creating policy. And as someone who sits in policy meetings, I swear they're not much different. "real life would never-" I swear to you real life WOULD.
