One Piece Live Action Review

Now that I've had time to watch and digest all the episodes it's time to discuss how I feel about the adaptation. This break down will be full of spoilers, so read at your own risk.

One Piece Live Action is good, actually.

Live action anime adaptations have a tendency to be soulless cash grabs that either don't give a shit about the source material or bank too much on just showing things the fans recognizes in place of an actual story.

OPLA loves the source material. It is clear that this production is a celebration of the manga series. The easter eggs and small nods to the series are not just there to make you point at the screen and say "There's the Thing!" They are apart of the world. Taking a note from Oda's writing to make the world of OPLA fill just as rich as the manga.

However, it is not a one for one recreation of the East Blue saga. How could it be? It would be impossible to take ~100 chapters of story and cram it into an 8 hour tv show season without it being a powerpoint of Luffy's Greatest Hits.

The story had to be changed to fit the medium and the pacing. Overall, I think the pacing is good and the changes made are for the better. But it's not perfect.

Episode 1 (aka mostly Zoro's intro):

Of the entire season, this was the weakest episode in my opinion. It had the most to introduce which is quite a challenge and it does so fairly well, but there are changes made here that I'm just not a fan of and I believe make the story weaker.

Zoro's introduction being changed to his face off with Mr. 7 is fine. It shows us him praying for Kuina, him being sassy to a bad guy, and ultimately him killing Mr. 7. Awesome start!

Unfortunately, we suffer when we cut to Zoro at Shells Town. He's only tied and imprisoned for a day, if that. And that's not even where Luffy first sees him. Instead, Luffy first sees Zoro at a bar starting a fight. Taking away the impact of him seeing Zoro's strong will after being tied up for days.

And it gets worse... Luffy just let's Zoro out, no strings attached and Zoro fetches his own swords. It takes away from the charm of the original scene where Luffy (a little bastard) blackmails Zoro into joining his crew to get his swords back. This change takes away two things: a showcase that Luffy is willing to be a stubborn shit to get what he wants and Zoro's willingness to give up his resolve because Luffy kept his word and brought him his swords.

While we're here, time for a Zoro tangent;

I'm really not a fan of how the character was adapted. This is not Zoro, this is some smug, emotionless samurai. All the beats were there. There were references to him being lost and a few jokey moments, but they are all delivered in the same monotone. Rarely is this Zoro shown to emote. Nor does he ever get to be goofy because YES! Roronoa Zoro can goofy. He's just a teenager in the East Blue saga, and yet OPLA plays him like he's alcoholic Batman.

Episode 2:

Oooh boy, give it up for episode 2! And Buggy, my little meow meow Buggy! I love him <3

As for the episode, the change from having Buggy being some shitty pirate just camped nearby and annoying the village to being a pirate who enslaved the village into being his audience was excellent! It's so fucked up and campy and even more fucked up.

Buggy's desires are for attention and fame. He wants what Shanks has and yet he's still stuck in the East Blue, desperate for a map that he can't get his own greedy hands on.

Buggy was such a stand out character in OPLA. I love Buggy in general and this version is a bit different than the pathetic Buggy we love from the manga, but he is like a evil cartoon villain chewing the scenery! I'm so glad they roped him into the plot to keep him throughout the season.

Episodes 3 & 4:

These are fine. Some people aren't fans of the changes and yeah, I agree taking away a lot of Usopp's agency sucks. It really doesn't feel like this is Usopp's arc, more like that he's just some guy who happens to be there.

But I was never a huge fan of the Syrup Village arc. I felt like it was poorly paced in the anime and the changes made at least kept the story condensed and Kuro's plan seemed more well thought out.

Biggest highlight of these episodes was Usopp! Jacob Romero does an amazing job at bringing the character to screen. He has so much charisma that it's hard not to smile when he's in a scene.

Episodes 5 & 6:

Anyone who knows me, knows I LOVE the Baratie arc! And this adaptation... is fine. Much like how Usopp is an after thought in his arc, Sanji is sidelined here to make room for PLOT.

Changing the Big Bad who threatens Baratie from Don Krieg to Arlong is a great choice. Don Krieg was always a lame, forgettable villain, so having Arlong show up to help push the plot towards the next arc is smart.

Much like Zoro's introduction, I'm not happy with Sanji's either. Specifically with how he meet Luffy. The scene where Sanji is the crew's waiter and has to fight some rowdy pirates is charming. But then Luffy say, "He's a great fighter." and UGGGHHHHHH

Luffy does NOT recruit Sanji for his strength. Nor does he recruit him for his cooking abilities. He recruits him because he is KIND. This is the same gripe I have with the Zoro intro. Luffy sees Zoro fight before recruiting him. When really he's supposed to want Zoro after seeing him tied up and learning that Zoro was captured because he saved a little girl from Helmeppo's dog. While Zoro and Sanji are the two strongest fighters on Luffy's crew, he never recruited them because they could fight.

ANYWAY

Luffy does see Sanji's kindness, only after seeing him fight and trying his food, and the two actors have great chemistry on screen. It's easy to believe that they are becoming fast friends and you can see in Taz Skylar's acting how much Sanji admires Luffy right off the bat. It's cute!

Unfortunately while Sanji is sidelined in his own arc, so two are the reveal of his backstory and the famous All Blue dream talk. His backstory is revealed in a random trauma dump to the crew which is only used to further the Zoro losing to Mihawk story. And the All Blue talk is just dropped randomly and has nothing to do with Sanji learning to pursue his own dreams. That's just done with a short shouting match between him and Zeff. Whatever.

Episodes 7 & 8:

Arlong Park was a good place to end the season. And the adaption of the arc is once again fine. Nami's backstory is rushed and the change to having no one in the town knowing her true intentions is a weird one.

BUT! Something I hadn't mentioned before, the sets are really fun! Arlong Park is a good example of this because it takes the design from the manga/anime and adds its own twist. The twist? Making Arlong Park look like a fairway at an amusement park. Which is a fun (horribly depressing) nod to something fans of the series can pick up on.

Other notable sets are Buggy's circus tent, Kaya's Tim Burton themed mansion, and the Baratie. God the Baratie is an amazing set! The detail of the lighthouse on top is *chefs kiss*

Something else I didn't mention before, is that there is a B plot throughout all 8 episodes following Garp in pursuit of Luffy while training Koby and Helmeppo. It's loosely based on a cover story the manga ran early on and it's fine.

The characterization of Garp is a little odd, as he seems more strict and book smart than his manga counterpart. (I cheered when we saw him finally throw some canon balls!!) But it all lead up to a moment of him meeting Zeff. Two men of the older generation. A former pirate and a marine sitting down over a glass of wine and steaks. And they discuss having to accept the changing world when really the conversation is about accepting their boys moving on follow their dreams. It's a simple scene, but it's one of my favorites.

NOW the Arlong Park battle is good, if not a little short because they have to make time for the Garp stuff. There is one line in particular that really bothers me. There is a moment where Luffy agrees with Arlong and says something like, "Maybe I can't defeat you." and... that's not Luffy.

Arlong Park has one of Luffy's most iconic moments. A moment that defines his character and the entire series.

And I think that's how I feel about the OPLA as a whole.

It's good, but it's not One Piece. Well- it's not the One Piece we already know.

This Luffy is different. OPLA Luffy has a moral compass. He has snappy lines and has maybe even read a book in his life time. He's not the same Luffy from the manga, and that's okay. Inaki Godoy is a joy to watch on screen and his version of Luffy is just as wonderful in his own way.

One Piece Live Action is witty and very charming. Filled with great action scenes, lively sets & costumes, and actors who are giving it their all in every scene.

Despite some changes I disagree with, this was an amazing adaption that is a celebration of the fans and an introduction to the wacky world of One Piece to new viewers.

RE: Typing classes, that's fair and truly where I think the divide comes from 💚 Typing classes were a thing in America in the 2000's/early 2010's (although AFAIK, they stopped doing them around 2014ish), and I know that's where I picked up my habit of shift for capitalizing. We didn't have calligraphy classes over here, closest thing to it is required cursive ages 6-12 (at least in my area), haha

That's actually so interesting. No one taught us how to use computers or whatever (at least I don't remember). Everyone kinda had computers at home (the big xp ones) and then all of a sudden we were required to do PowerPoint presentations and stuff. It was a weird transition but! We managed!

The most I had was a little excell intro in 9th grade (can't remember the class), and then video editing / animation in high school (because i was in the arts department). But yeah, no typing classes.

I wish today was longer because honestly I had a great day off. Beyond feeling a little unwell at times I just had a really nice time and I got a lot done and I spent time outside and it was a good day. I miss James but they're on their way home and will be here in a few hours. I just wish I had more time. That's all.

Last night I felt terrible. Everything was terrible I felt awful my body hurt I was not having a good time. When I woke up at 6:00 I did not feel much better. But I was a little more comfortable. My leg still hurt but it wasn't as excruciating. And I was able to fall back asleep until a little after 9:00.

Sweetp was being such a good boy and did not wake me up at all. And when I woke up my neck did not hurt as much and I was in a better mood. My brother had texted me some really encouraging stuff about my art and that felt really nice. And I got up and I started to get ready for the day.

I felt ugly and disgusting. I did not like my original outfit my hair felt bad my face felt bad. I was not doing great but I had to not focus on myself because I had stuff to do. And I would spend from 10:00 a.m. this morning until 2:00 p.m. working on my PowerPoint for camp. It's 52 slides long. And I'm very proud of it.

I started by getting a snack. I had the rest of my guac from yesterday and half of a brownie for breakfast. And I got into laying out this PowerPoint. I have a lot of trouble with blank pages. I've always found it incredibly difficult to start when there's nothing on the page. So I've always been big into just copying pasting something I've already done and adding to and deleting from there. And that worked really well in my favor today. I would copy and paste things from my original document or move things around I was using the clipart from the handouts that there was some consistency and style. And I would copy a slide to the next slide and then just delete the text but have the format. And I was really happy with it and about 2 hours in I was really seeing the progress. There was some research and some image gathering and some layout issues that I was dealing with but I was figuring it out. And it was just really good I was really in a great place.

I took a break for a few minutes and vacuumed to the apartment. I made some soda and I had a good little lay down just to stretch out my back but I didn't want to stop because I was afraid that if I stopped I would lose all motivation. So I jumped right back into it.

And I worked until around 2:00. I did three sections that this PowerPoint is going to take care of. The intro which explains what each program section is has the rules and maps of camp. And then I have my lead section which is about fiber. It used to be called cordage but I decided that fiber makes more sense. And then ends with my quizzo section which honestly took a really long time to copy and paste because I'm not entirely sure how to do animations like old school PowerPoint animations. So instead I did two slides with one having the questions and then the second one having the answer circled. Which I think essentially does the same thing.

I am shocked how focused I was. What really helped me was I found a 4-hour YouTube video to put on to listen to. So I never had to change videos and it was about a book and I love breakdowns of books that I've never read. So this was perfect. And it was a terrible book and the person was making fun of it so that was just funny as well. So I was having a great day.

And once I realized I was basically done this PowerPoint I was thrilled. I was so happy and I felt like I accomplished so much. My goal was to spend one hour a day every day of August until it was done. But I missed Friday and yesterday so I felt like I had to make up for it and I made up for it with a whole extra hour so I'm really proud of myself.

I was feeling really good after that and I decided that I needed to take another shower. And so I took a shower and I had made a conditioner with my blue hair dye in it to just keep my hair looking a little bit more fresh than it has been. I did accidentally spill it all over the tub and then was very frustrated this morning but it was okay. I took my shower and I washed my hair and I felt really good.

I got changed into a different dress and I felt much better about myself. And then I decided that I should go for a walk and knit outside.

First I would go to the Parker across the street but very quickly realized there are no benches there. I don't know why. I feel like there used to be. I know there wasn't many but there seems to only be one picnic table which is up by the bocce ball court. So I kept walking and went towards the Park ave fountain parks.

I had better luck there. I found a bench that wasn't disgusting and sat by the fountain and I knit for about half an hour. Until I got too hot in the sun. I texted James and they were very worried about if I was wearing sunscreen but I was. But I still wanted to get out of the sun because I was too hot.

I decided that I would go and have a late lunch early dinner at brass tap. And so I walked over there and on the walk there I encountered many lantern flies which I have not seen much of so I was chasing them around stomping on them. Because you're supposed to kill them. And I'm sure I looked insane to the drivers going past. I did not run into traffic but I almost did chasing one. I did also come across a bunch of killed ones already. I don't know why they're getting bad again but maybe it's the weather.

I got to brass tap and it was too loud in there. It's always too loud in there. The music is entirely too loud there was only 10 people. Why is it screaming It's 3:30 in the afternoon. But I sat in the window seats and I worked on my knitting and got a sandwich and a soda and the waiter was very nice even though it was too loud to really have a conversation with him. I finished one whole square and started another one. I wasn't in any rush and it was just nice.

After I finished eating I decided to go for a walk and continued walking in the big circle from our apartment to Mount Washington to the armory and back to our apartment. I stopped at the little park across from the Mount Royal train station and sat there on the cement benches that I enjoy. And I knit there until around 5:00. I was starting to get hot and my phone only had 40% battery so I knew it was time to go home.

I did enjoy sitting there and listening to music and knitting and watching the world go by. Not a ton of foot traffic but I still had a good time. And then I walked home. I took a different way than I normally do so I could go past the nursery and all the nice old houses over there and admired there flowers and the yards. And soon I was walking up to my house.

And all of a sudden I was incredibly hot. Just shaky and uncomfortable and overheated. It was like my body weighted until I was home to fall apart. I immediately had draw a cold bath and lay down in it for 45 minutes because I was delirious and shaking. It was horrible. I don't know where it came from but it was not fun. And once I did cool down I didn't join my bath. As soon as I got in the bath I put on when dagoon's video on blood meridian. I had tried to read blood meridian this spring when he first put the video out but I got to the one part with the fortune tellers and I just couldn't do it anymore. It's just so heavy. I need someone to walk me through it. And his video is 5 and 1/2 hours long so I realized if I put it on then by the time it was done James would be coming home because the plan is for them to be home around 10:00.

And so I have been watching their video and knitting and fixing things and working on drawings. I did the drawing for my BMI sticker pack and I made the walrus sticker for Jorge that I promised. And I miss James deeply but it's been a really nice night and I love being alone sometimes. I've always loved my alone time I feel like I can jump from thing to thing and not feel judged and I can walk around and not feel anxious like I sometimes do. So I just enjoyed my evening and now I will wait for my husband to return from sports.

Tomorrow James is coming with me to camp and then we will leave early for my doctor's appointment. I hope that it is a beautiful day. It's raining right now and it seems like this week is going to be very damp. But I'm not that worried. I have positive feelings right now and I'm hoping to continue to carry those on. Pitou Bricks Has Never Done Anything Wrong In His/Their Life

(I did these episodes, 131-133, a disservice by sandwiching them between Andor S1 and S2)

Well, it happened again. I spent another entire episode of Hunter X Hunter with my mouth agape. I think the first time was also somewhere during the Ant arc. This arc has got the juice. And that Gon/Pitou stuff is Really Juicy.

But part way through I started thinking: is it actually good? The thing Gon did initially was visually brilliant. His body being fully consumed by darkness (as teased by the intro SO many weeks ago) felt so earned, and later when we learned the sacrifice it took made the entire event feel justified and grounded. And the Animation! The dark nen steaming off of Gon, his darkened silhouette, the Gon Killua scene!?!? Its always rewarding when animation teams get the chance to do something different from the usual style, especially when it's coming off of roughly 130 artistically consistent ones. Yeah they've pulled it a couple times with the King recently, but it hits so hard when it's about our poor sad boy. And the music! Being who knows how many "seasons" into the show now, the music team has had so much to play with. So much so that for most of the arc they've almost exclusively reused older tracks. Now it's become apparent that it was to make these large moments, previously with the King and Netero, and now Gon and Pitou, have their own unique tracks to back these larger than life moments.

But the thing he did was kinda meh to me. Like yeah, it's inverse Bisky (although Gon doesn't know Bisky does that). With his stupid Doug Dimmadome hair. His JoJo esque proportions. But his voice actor is just speaking a bit lower and grumpier! I understand what Togashi was doing (he did very similar things in YYH for instance) and while I Love the inciting incidents, and I love the cost of doing it, I just don't love how It looks.

Another thought I had while watching was, gosh darn it I wish it didn't take this long to get here. Like this payoff (aside from my aforementioned complaints) is excellent. But it took SO LONG. There was so much good in the chimera ant arc, but now that we're basically at the end, I can't help but feel it could've been cut down by a bit. Trimmed up the powerpoints. Integrated them into the action for once. Pulled back on some of the story segments. And as much as I love the narrator, sometimes he could be a bit verbose. Segments like in 130 where his and Pitous dialogue are interwoven are good, but sometimes it's shorter to have a character say something with intention then to have the narrator describe every meticulous detail of the situation, including describing said characters inner monologue. And again, I am a Narrator Defender! Of course, it could've gone wrong. I know a bit too much was cut out from Greed Island which made the pacing a bit off, and that could've happened with Ants too. But I think what I'm actually saying is Maybe Togashi himself needs a tighter editor/co-writer.

130 was a great episode in a great arc that I've consistently been amazed by, in a show that has dragged just a little bit too much in the lead up to it.

Anyway, 132 and 133 are pretty cool too. Guess the King and Guards have Rose cancer. Whomp Whomp! I do really wish Welphin's whole deal was set up much earlier in the show, preferably before any of the NGL got eated, but aside from that I'm enjoying his characterization. Shoving the girl in a box is really funny. Youpi going out off screen is also really funny, and somehow one of the more gratifying ant deaths. It is going to be Fascinating if we get to the end of this arc and have Zero* Extermination team deaths. As far as main (human-side) protagonists, the only confirmed kill has been Kite*! An overall complete victory! *Chairmen Netero exempt because he sucks

We're not only at the end of the ant arc, but it looks like there's only 15 episodes left in the show! Wow! Unless there's more Gon stuff, I feel like it'll be mostly smooth sailing till the end (of the ant arc). Looking forward to how it all warps up!
