thinking abt chengqing and zuanli as like. inverses. like zuanli as a public engagement, a spectacle that anyone can comment on and they do, jin zixuan resenting jiang yanli bc their relationship was an obligation he never wanted and refusing to get to know her, jiang yanli fulfilling her familial obligation despite knowing this and how it turned into real love.

and chengqing as this secret admiration, jiang cheng's teenage crush that was doomed almost from the beginning, wen qing knowing this, both how he felt and that nothing could come of it but still helping him and feeling Something but never letting herself truly feel it, rejecting his offer to help, his feelings, whatever she felt, for the sake of her family. how whatever existed between them barely got a chance to breathe before it was gone.

falling til four in the morning by phnelt. MDZS, The Untamed, modern au, wangxian, T. 90s AU where lan zhan and wei ying meet through analog media. its been a while since i read it but i have a weakness for analog media, especially tapes, and these things really get to shine here.

widow‘s weeds by travelingneuritis. MDZS, The Untamed, modern cultivation, wangxian, wlw, comphet, E. very fun AU about wei wuxian being engaged to jin guangyao, and lan wangji, the landscape gardener wei wuxian hired for her wedding, suspecting that wei wuxian has been killing her former husbands (plural). jin guangyao has only a small role here but i liked how the author has written him and his incidental cahooting with wei wuxian!

but the wind keeps blowing by morwen. WOH pre-canon/canon divergence, wenzhou, amnesia, ghost valley, M. a man without a name wakes up in a place without a yesterday. on his travels to find out who he is, he picks up two interesting companions with their own agendas. a really cool stab at zhou zishu’s and wen kexing’s and gu xiang's pre-canon selves, and a look at how wen kexing‘s coup for the throne of ghost valley might have been like, now with zhou zishu thrown into the mix. i especially loved how the department of the unfaithful plays into this. this fic is written in german!

the remains of summer by nirenhuang. WOH modern AU, wenzhou, fluff, T. zhou zishu and wen kexing are students in the Berlin of 1920-30. this is a bilingual fic (german, english). due to the time this is set in, some of the places that show up here dont exist anymore, they were destroyed during the third reich or ww2. i loved how the author interweaves these aspects and creates this rich tapestry of culture, identity, language, queerness, and finding your crowd, in the years just before hitler comes into power. (politics have no impact, though.) this is a rewrite of a similar fic by the same author in mandarin, and there is a sequel! predominantly written in english with some german phrases!

WOH modern au, Ride or Die AU, wenzhou, wlw, E. zhou zishu and wen kexing reunite after years of not speaking with each other. their complex relationship is unravelled over the course of wen kexing comitting murder for zhou zishu and their subsequent escape from the authorites. a story about want and yearning and these hidden things lodged deep inside that even if u dont acknowledge them, still have the power to ruin your life—or change it for the better.

one of the moments i cant stop thinking about:

Her fingers fit perfectly around Zishu‘s throat, right against her windpipe. Zishu studies Kexing‘s flushed face and vicious eyes with no reservations. Serenity washes over her like a deep ocean as her pulse beats rabbit quick beneath Kexing‘s fingertips. “You didn’t have to get my hopes up,” Kexing seethes, grip tightening just enough to make it difficult to swallow. “I was over all of it. I was over you but you had to pop up again, you selfish asshole!” “Kill me then.” That throws Kexing off balance.

WOH modern au, wenzhou, crack, G. zhou zishu‘s terrible and chaotic neighbour wen kexing devises a masterful plan to woe zhou zishu, much to zhou zishu‘s chagrin. that plan includes feral kittens and lots of atrocious ignorance of boundaries. nothing at all goes wrong (lie). i reread this one recently and it was great :D

my personal convoluted answer to the question is that both pre death and post res wei wuxian have the possibility to resurrect lan wangji in a fit of emotion (pre death moreso because of you know the deteriorating mental state), but pre death wei wuxian would not resurrect lan wangji on purpose, and post res wei wuxian would only do so with express permission, which I can't imagine lan wangji giving

“Lan Zhan!“

Lan Wangji’s calm afternoon was interrupted by Wen Ying bursting through the door. He was long overdue for a visit, but Lan Wangji still mourned the loss of his peace. Gently, he put his teacup on the table.

“Wen Ying.”

Wen Ying stopped right before Lan Wangji, a bright grin splitting his face. His robes were long and heavy, golden embroidery decorating the neck and the many suns in the cloth. He must have come straight from seeing Wen Ruohan, then. Wen Ying didn’t bother dressing up like that for anyone else.

“Lan Zhan, I’ve missed your company,” Wen Ying whined and dropped to the floor next to Lan Wangji, a theatrical sigh accompanying his lament. One would think him two years old instead of twenty.

“We saw each other two weeks ago,” Lan Wangji pointed out. The day had been enjoyable as Wen Ying had taken him around the markets, asking for opinions on gifts for his cousins.

“I know! Isn’t that sad? Father has been keeping me so busy, I have no free time at all!”

And all the hours that were for his pleasure, Wen Ying spent with Lan Wangji. It was a far cry from their early acquaintance. Three years ago, Wen Ying had spent every day at Lan Wangji’s side, doing his absolute best to be an excellent host despite their circumstances.

Circumstances that had changed into something unrecognizable to Lan Wangji. In name, he was still Wen Ying’s guest. In truth, his position as a hostage against Gusu Lan hadn’t changed, only his own acceptance of it. It was difficult to maintain one’s composure as an unjustly imprisoned when Wen Ying ensured he got the best quarters, any delicacy he could wish for, and gave him more beautiful trinkets than he knew what to do with or would ever ask for.

Lan Wangji was a hostage treated as well as a dearly beloved family member, but he was neither. He’d almost been able to forget it at times in that first year before Wen Xu had died and Wen Chao followed him.

Before his brothers’ demise, Wen Ying was Wen Ruohan’s most doted-on child, kept close by indulgence. I’m aptly named, Wen Ying used to say. Who do I have to envy? All my father asks of me is to be filial!

But now he wasn’t expected to entertain the Sect Leader with tales of his experiments anymore, but to follow his lead. Wen Ying participated directly in the war now, killing  Lan Wangji’s allies and holding his family by their throat as Wen Ruohan’s last remaining heir.

And instead of ensuring Wen Ruohan was left entirely without sons, Lan Wangji drank tea and listened to Wen Ying’s endless chatter. On some days, all Wen Ying talked about were his cousins. He’d spent his first year as Wen Ruohan’s ward mainly in the company of Wen Qing and Wen Ning as he’d been sickly and left to the Dafan Wen branch to heal. He hadn’t even met his brothers until he was declared healthy. On other days, all he talked about was the war. He never told Lan Wangji anything of true importance that might tempt Lan Wangji to find a spy, but he boasted of the Wen victories and how close they were to showing the cultivation world how much better everything could be under the might of the sun.

Lan Wangji stayed quiet, usually. Nobody but his servants ever bothered him unless Wen Ruohan saw it fit to throw a banquet and Lan Wangji was forced to attend. And while he didn’t mind his solitude, speaking out too harshly against the victories Wen Ying enjoyed might see him returned to a prison cell.

It would probably be the honorable thing to do, but what right did Lan Wangji have to think of honor when he was kept like this?

“Lan Zhan, I truly missed your company. Did you miss mine?” Wen Ying asked, looking like a child begging for candy.

Had Lan Wangji missed Wen Ying? Yes, in that abstract way you could miss the only person of significance in your life. “Mn.”

Wen Ying cheered. “I knew it! See, Lan Zhan, I’ve got a gift for you! I had to ask my father, but he said we deprived you long enough.”

Wen Ying took a qiankun pouch from his belt and stuck his hand inside. From within, he retrieved carved dark wood.

For a single heartbeat, Lan Wangji thought it might be Wangji, but a closer look quickly revealed that while well-made, the guqin wasn’t his own.

“You said you missed playing!” Wen Ying said. “I had to search a good while to find one I was sure would measure up to your skills, but Lan Zhan, now you have to play for me!”

Wen Ying had been stuck with him in a dreary, dark, and cold cave. He’d seen Lan Wangji kill the Xuanwu of Slaughter with nothing more than a few bow strings. Even a broken guqin would have been more refined. That singular action and its aftermath, the every kindness will be repaid whispered against his throat, had led Lan Wangji right here, into the heart of their very enemy.

Gifting him a guqin was nothing more than a taunt on Wen Ruohan’s behalf.

He should’ve killed Wen Ying then when he was passed out against Lan Wangji, three years younger than they were now.

He should kill him now.

Wen Ying grinned.

Lan Wangji began to play.

Or: Wei Ying had been openly declaring his love for Lan Zhan ever since they met at The Cloud Recesses. Confused and emotionally constipated, Lan Zhan rejected him, until everything went wrong, until he lost Wei Ying in the end. 13 years later, Wei Ying cannot trust Lan Zhan with his heart.

Or or: wwx confesses, teenji is a constipated panic gay, and canon still happens.

Madam Lan lives long enough to take back some agency--and her sons. Kay's comments: This series is not yet completed, but the first two stories are finished and they can be read as standalones. I really love it when Mama Lan is given a) a name b) the chance to run away with her children. Women looking out for women was awesome in this story and Wangxian's first meeting during the Sunshot Campaign was great too! They are immediately so gone for each other. Excerpt: When A-Zhan arrives right after breakfast, she is as composed as she ever is. He doesn’t run up the steps anymore, not like he used to, the sound of his little drumming feet waking joy in her heart. They had put a stop to that when he was four years old, and for almost three years now, he has walked carefully up the stairs in steps as measured as his uncle’s. He works so hard, her sweet boy, to maintain the control they demand of him. She misses the enthusiasm of his toddlerhood, but even now, when the doors open, his eyes light up, brighter than sunlight, warmer than flame. She sees him knot his little hands into fists, the only evidence of how hard he is working to keep himself from running to her as he walks steadily across the floor. But when he reaches her, he falls into her arms with the same heartrending sigh, and he rubs his face against the silk of her clothes like he did as a baby. She pulls him close, buries her face in the silk and scent of his hair, and holds him until the clearing of a throat makes her loosen her arms. Last time I asked, a single fic was rec'ed. After that I went to Ao3 to filter search myself. But I was disappointed by a lot. Under r*pe/non- con (rape) tag it's actually pwp fics. Under aftermath tagged fics, there's isn't actually any aftermath , like one I read was so unrealistic and.... that it hurt.

jiang cheng ships by whether they're about wei wuxian or not

our boy wwx's protagonist halo is more like a gravitational field in his effect on jc's emotional development. he probably didn't, like, invent jiang cheng's abandonment issues, but he certainly made them worse! so here are jiang cheng ships grouped by whether or not they're actually about wei wuxian. the ones in the middle could go either way.

definitely about wei wuxian:

chengxian: obvious. wei wuxian is literally there.

zhancheng: obvious. they're both obsessed with wei wuxian.

ningcheng: obvious. they're both wei wuxian's horrible/beloved science experiments/little brothers and neither of them are normal about it. to be fair, wei wuxian is also not normal about it, thus the science experiments.

definitely not about wei wuxian:

mingcheng: I think this is more about theoretical temperamental compatibility and letting jiang cheng date a hot male authority figure who at least kind of approves of him.

sangcheng: I think this is in some ways often about giving jiang cheng a human who is *not* obsessed with wei wuxian. like, give jiang cheng his own bf who can be into him on his own merits.

chengyao: they're coworkers! they're inadvertent coparents! they're both wildly competent and also incredibly bitchy if the situation calls for it! if anything this is about jin ling instead.

chengyi: I don't know what this is about other than getting jiang cheng a boytoy. I don't rightly know that he would want one of those but why not! get down with your bad selves!

could go either way, Schrödinger's wei wuxian:

chengqing: this one I wasn't sure about because actually a lot of writers are pretty careful to make chengqing actually about them but wei wuxian got up in there with great determination and made that threesome happen (wen qing's hands, wei wuxian and jiang cheng's holes... surgical holes... I regret this already). hard to totally extract him from the dynamic after that. the wei wuxian must be contended with. depends on when in the timeline it happens and what canon you're working from, since cql made it canon pre-surgery.

xicheng: this is less likely to explicitly be about wei wuxian and more likely to be structurally about wei wuxian. not only does it make them match (twin prides dating the twin jades) but the brothers-dating-brothers situation ties them tightly to wangxian from multiple directions. in other words, if it's about wei wuxian it's because it sort of re-joins them as family through a different method. if he's not your "real" brother, becoming an in-law is fine?

disclaimer: I acknowledge it is possible to, for example, write a zhancheng fic which is not about wei wuxian, I'm not saying you can't! through the power of AU all things are possible, etc. but you have to actively remove him from the dynamic, because canon embeds him there very deeply, vs. something like chengyao, where they have a totally separate relationship (via jin ling- and their working relationship).
