probably my favourite bit of the fandom's treatment of Crowley is the almost paganistic way of choosing the pronouns. you may generally go the easy route with he/him most prevalent in the show, but we all understand it's in the loosest way possible, barely attached to her presentation. he's a demon, c'mon. you need to feel out the vibes, look at the weather and the current state of affairs, it shall be revealed from the Energy around. he's such a nerd, they're more beautiful than the wine-dark sea, she's my wife. i want them upside down sleeping on the ceiling, she would lead men like sir John Franklin his Arctic expedition. on occasion it's a drawn out snake/hiss, other times a dark glasses grin emoji will suffice. don't even get me started on the Nanny, i dare not to utter the name without bowing down in reverence first. what a gift that keeps on giving

Just had to draw them for Pride because they are my newest OTP and, you know, queer, but wanted something different than just them holding the flag, so I used the lesbian pride flag as a pallet

this is only vaguely related to my last ask but it got me thinking again how much i don't like the type of scrutiny that some people engage with when it comes to headcanons. don't get me wrong, there is plenty of headcanons that i despite when they appear in a particular context because they clearly come from a place of total ignorance and sometimes even borderline malice; and there are ways of writing about characters that are very obviously rooted in reactionary attitudes. but i have also seen situations in which people of specific ethnicities were told they were not supposed to hc a character to be said ethnicity because of the classist implications. i have seen people saying that headcanoning a particular character to be trans is too stereotypical and that it makes them "sick." i've seen people annoyed about characters being a particular religion because "there's another character who was said to be that religion before" (shocking and upsetting to some americans especially: religions are real and usually have more than one follower so they don't have to be assigned to a single character per title as their token.) and idk i think we should all pause for a moment and remember that the pieces of identity that people assign their favourite characters are often their own. there are ways to reclaim these cliches too. it's a matter of intention. people often read themselves into their beloved pieces of art. and maybe it does not always create the truest image of the author's intention nor a revolutionary picture of minority rep, but no one claims it does.

Now Prompting!
Welcome to the Harry Potter Queer Villains Fanworks Festival!
A chance to explore your darkside, lesser acknowledged characters, and many rarepairs in a queer positive setting!
This fanworks festival centres around the villains of Harry Potter with queer headcanons and prompts.
Have you ever wanted to explore the story of Herpo the Foul under a transmasc lens? No, well that's not all! What about tackling a fun, lesbian fic about Morgan(a) Le Fay? Still no. That's alright, let's find something else. I know! Have you considered the lore of Salazar Slytherin and Godric Gryffindor from the perspective of forbidden lovers? Not at all... Well I bet you could be now! But, I get it, you want something a bit more exciting. In that case, there's always exploring Grindelwald's life, love, and rise to power!
That should have your attention now. You can write or draw prompts like these and MORE in the Harry Potter Queer Villains Fanworks Festival!
Schedule
April 25th, 2023 - May 13th 2023: Prompting
May 6th, 2023 - May 27th, 2023: Claiming
June 3rd, 2023 - July 3rd, 2023: Posting
July 3rd, 2023 - July 10th, 2023: Overtime (reserved for anyone needing extensions)
July 11th, 2023: Author Reveals
Guidelines
▪ This is a 16+ festival, where only 18+ participants are allowed to post sexually explicit material. Anyone who lies about their age are subject to being banned from future festivals.
▪ Promotion of homophobia, transphobia, ableism, racism, sexism, anti-semitism, fatphobia, other anti-LGBTQIA+ rheteric, etc is NOT allowed. Keep in mind and be careful of condeming any characters because of gender, race, sex, orientation, culture, disability, weight, etc.
▪ Anyone can prompt or claim for this fest; you do not have to do one to do the other.
▪ Self Prompting will be allowed when the claiming time comes.
▪ This is an anonymous festival. Therefore, talk of claimed prompts isn't encouraged in public.
▪ All fanworks should focus on a "villainous" character from the Harry Potter series.
Characters should be one of the following to constitute as a villain:
- An antagonist of the protagonists in the main series or in a spin-off. This includes but isn't limited to Voldemort, his Death Eaters, Grindelwald, his Acolytes, etc.
- Be part of Wizarding history and have a legacy for being evil in someway. This includes but isn't limited to Herpo the Foul, Morgan(a) Le Fay, Salazar Slytherin, the Bloody Baron, etc.
Yes, this does mean that certain morally dubious characters such as Draco Malfoy, Severus Snape, and Regulus Black count as villains for the sake of this festival. For the sake of simplicity, however, Albus Dumbledore does not count as a villain, regardless of his many messy and shitty actions within the main series and spin-off, Fantastic Beasts. However, characters who don't count as a villain under these parameters can still be prevalent in your fanwork. In fact, they can even be the second half of the main ship, but the main character who does count as a villain should be the focus of any story or art.
• Author Expectations - Fanfictions should have a minimum of 2,000 words. Authors must have an archive of our own account to add their fic to the collection. Additionally, fics should be new and unique to the fest. No add ons to previously posted works in progress are allowed. Sequels and prequels may be allowed so long as they can be read without needing to have read the previous part(s) of the story. Fanfictions should be tagged and warned for accordingly. "Author chose not to use Archive Warnings" is not an acceptable warning. Fics should not be posted elsewhere (ie on Tumblr, Twitter, etc) until after reveals. Fanfictions should be edited for SPaG to the best of the author's abilities. If you're in need of a beta, you may join our discord and ask for help!
• Artwork at any stage that the artist is happy sharing it in is acceptable. Artists must either have an archive of our own account to add their art to the collection or reach out to the fest host so they can possibly send their art to the author of their prompt, in order to post the art along with the fic. Additionally, all art should be new and unique to the fest. Art should also not be posted elsewhere (ie on Tumblr, Twitter, etc) until after reveals.

Thoughts on timberkon? Just got randomly curious
i like it in theory! always love an ot3, and i see the potential, but for me to read/think about them it’d just have to be a really good concept or really well-done character work. i feel like bernard in the comics (currently) is often just there as a visual shorthand for tim’s queer rep and hasn’t had the chance to be an actual interesting character in his own right (like, i guess we were starting to hint at something? with his parents and the pain cult…? but then td:r got cut so maybe we’ll never know), so it’s hard to figure out exactly what he brings to the timkon dynamic without some extra effort. which mostly means it takes a talented creator/really good fanwork to build him out individually and in relationship to tim and kon. and i’ve seen some fun art/headcanons that do that! as for fic i remember really enjoying a study by bernard dowd by cv_angels, which is roughly canon-compliant pre-timberkon and one that made me go yeah, that’s probably how this would go down.
so tl;dr i don’t spend a lot of time thinking about timberkon but if someone wants to write me the epic pangy ot3 fic of my dreams i will more than happily read it.

Episode 199: Reflecting Reality?
In Episode 199, “Reflecting Reality?” Flourish and Elizabeth tackle a trio of listener questions on the ways fanfiction does—and doesn’t—mirror our own lives. Topics discussed include changes in how queerness has been depicted over the past few decades, whether longer-running fandoms tend to produce more generic modern AUs, and the ways English as a global language of fandom shapes fic setting choices—and creates a sense of placelessness, no matter where an author lives.

Since starting this webcomic, I’ve actually unintentionally broken my writer’s block as well‼️ Which is awesome because now I can have 2 creative projects I enjoy and I can better divide up my time so I don’t unintentionally burn myself out of either project‼️ I’m having a great time and once my 9 fixation loosens it’s grip on my frontal lobe, I’ll be sure to draw more of my current OCs for y’all to see because I actually love my little fellas 😎

Dystopian heroines lesser known than Katniss Everdeen and Tris Prior
Wanted a small exercise in drawing very different kind of people, using the heroines of amazing dystopias I can recommend, and got a bit carried away.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tally Youngblood – Uglies Series (Scott Westerfeld)
Mischievous, lonely, but also a bit naïve and sheltered Tally wants nothing more than to be made Pretty, to fit in, to be how she should be. As she meets the unconventional Shay, these ideas get challenged, and for a while, the two carve out every little bit of freedom their world allows them. Then Shay vanishes, and the suddenly not that friendly and utopian anymore government forces Tally to find her.
Uglies has this nice dreamy, almost utopian feeling to it, but you always sense that there is something horrible in the background. But the heart of the series, also in the two following books, is Tally and Shays quite real feeling, somewhat homoerotic (sadly only implied though, not canon) and very dysfunctional relationship. This was one of the first YA dystopias to get big, and even predates The Hunger Games, but is not as famous anymore, even if this year a movie finally will come out. Sadly, despite Tally in the books being chubby to fat, at least in the first book, and her ethnicity never stated, they cast a thin white actress for her though. 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sonmi-451 – Cloud Atlas (David Mitchell)
Sonmi was created as a servant in a fast food chain, but despite being as quiet as she was meant to be, she also is curious and smart and seeks justice, and as she wants more of her life than that, she ends up in a conspiracy that could end the rule of the companies governing Neo Seol.
Sonmis tale, told as an interview before her execution, is one of six stories in Cloud Atlas. I love stories of clones and androids coming into their own and realizing that they are people, and this one was one of my favorites as a teen.2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ria – Die Verratenen (Ursula Poznanski)
Ria, a genius at rhetoric and at reading people, and always rational, is one of the leading students in sphere Hoffnung. But then she finds out about a planned assassination of her and five others, and is forced to flee into the ice-cold wilderness outside and has to bargain with the clans living there. The clans again and again attacking supply trains between the spheres. It turns out there is more to the hostility of the two groups than the spheres let her think. But they are still in danger…
A german book, I remember reading this down in one big train journey. There is always just another cliffhanger, you can’t lay this book down. The criticism of elitism and first world-third world divide is interesting too.3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aster Grey – An Unkindness of Ghosts (Rivers Solomon)
Smart and adaptive enough to be a healer, but stern and socially awkward enough to be somewhat of an outsider even among her peers on the lower decks of a racially segregated generation ship, Asters life is already hard enough, trying to protect her mentally ill former lover and now best friend Giselle, healing people along with Theo, the bastard child of a higher decks general, avoiding the brutalizing raids. Then she finds new leads about the mysterious death of her mother, and is thrown into the power struggle among the white leaders.
This is not a light read. The discrimination and abuse Aster (and Giselle, and to an only slightly lesser extent Theo) faces, for being black, for being female, for being autistic, for being bi and nonbinary is incredibly intense and the book painfully shows every bit of it. Still, the world felt vivid and real, and Aster is a quite unique heroine. I also felt quite seen in her as a bi autistic woman.4
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mia Wiedemann – Sternenschimmer (Kim Winter)
Optimistic and kind, Mia wants to help in a refugee hostel for the refugees of an civil war on the planet Loduun. She falls in love with Iason, a cold and stern refugee still traumatized from the war, but soon tension between humans and aliens rise, and also the conflicts of the civil war follow the refugees to earth.
More a love story than a dystopian, Sternenschimmer still captured my heart as a teen because it managed to describe how vulnerable and strange and painful first love feels quite well. The worldbuilding is also quite vivid, and I like the humor.5
Also sorry that I don't have more queer heroines, except for Aster, none of them are canonically queer, even if Tally and Shay do seem to be bi, but aren't actually canonically confirmed. Bought another book with a queer heroine, but it turned out to not actually be dystopian.
(trigger warnings below the line)
1 trigger warnings: eating disorders, beauty culture, body dysmorphia, ableism, major trigger warning for the characters in the second and third book massively glorifying self harm and eating disorders and this not being handled particularly well
2 trigger warnings: rape, dehumanization, euthanisia, cannibalism, in the movie: yellowface and blackface. The setting of her story in South Korea could also play into the “cyberpunk orientalism” trope
3 trigger warnings: viruses and germs, child harm, could also possibly play into the noble s*vage trope
4 quite a lot, this book is very heavy and brutal: Most of all racism, police brutality, rape, slavery, ableism, medical gore, depictions of severe mental illness, suicide
5 I am white and not a refugee, so I am not sure about the details, but this surely glosses over a lot of the refugee experience, and also possibly paints some refugees as more dangerous than they are in reality. Also Iason can be somewhat controlling, and its not handled very well. Trigger warnings: mind control, violence (not particulary graphic), in the following books: suicide, mental illness.

i've been talking abt my voltron playlists and @iveofficiallygonemad asked to hear them and i want to share with anybody who wants!! i know they're not perfect, i'm working on them & trying to make them better. if you have any recommendations for any of them, let me know!! there's like A Lot and i want to give a lil explanation for most of them, so i'm putting them under the cut ^-^
SO first i have my favorite one <3 it's just. all of them. it's the whole team. it's a mess and it's a bunch of different genres because it's them fighting over the aux cord on a road trip. it's them trying to make each other laugh or annoy each other or play something catchy enough it will infect everyone in the vicinity with brain worms.
Hunk: i'm pretty happy with my Hunk playlist! chill vibes. he strikes me as the kind of guy who listens to calm music to try to find his own calm, and that's what i got here :)
Pidge: this is messier and less cohesive than my usual playlist because frankly i think pidge would have a shit taste in music. all over the board. this is a mix of meme songs and 8-bit covers and vocaloid and stuff that i think pidge would genuinely connect with, and i think pidge listens to all their music on shuffle without any regards for genre or mood because they're a gremlin. nobody gives pidge sole control of the aux.
Coran hears 80's music for the first time and loses his mind. He thinks ABBA is humanity's single greatest achievement.
Lance: i have ideas about where I'm going with this but haven't really settled yet. Lance seems like the kind of boy that loves to dance (is that canon? i forgot) so most of these are Bops That Make You Move in some way or another. he likes to present an upbeat face to the world, so there's no angsting in this playlist! we are clinging to the things that make us happy with both hands until our knuckles turn white!
Keith: i'm gonna be honest. i made him a playlist but i honestly don't think he cares about music very much. it's very important to some people! he's just not one of them! i haven't cracked this playlist open in a while but i'm pretty sure it's full of songs that i think he would conceivably train/work out to.
Shiro: this playlist involves the dumbest headcanon i have for shiro that has just not left me alone since i first thought of it. most of the playlist reflects the fact that he had an emo phase in middle school (that one isn't a headcanon, you just have to look at him to know) but BUT there are a few songs on here that are on here because. little known fact. he also went through a Twilight phase that he told nobody about. (keith knows. keith was there.) he has the entire twilight soundtrack memorized. he moved past the story but the music stays forever. he used to daydream about slow dancing to Flightless Bird, American Mouth. the first time Coran mentions that they have to avoid a place because there's a supermassive black hole there, he has to bite his tongue in order to keep a straight face. do NOT ask me why i believe this so wholeheartedly.
Allura's playlist sucks right now. I think it's because in my heart of hearts i know that, were she on earth today, she would go fucking nuts for taylor swift. i have ambivalent feelings for taylor swift. i cannot do allura justice like this. if you see my vision and have recs as to what might actually fit her, PLEASE.
Klance: i haven't done it yet but i'm gonna go through this and sort it to be a sort of progression of their relationship, starting with the more combative Rivalry songs, then slipping into "oh shit oh shit" songs, then maybe ending on the more lighthearted purely romantic songs <3
(i have two songs in a shallura playlist which does not at all encapsulate how much i'm obsessed with them. the tiny cop inside my head is just constantly screaming at me that i'm going to get yelled at for liking shallura. i am going to kill the cop inside my head.)
#mj talks#oooooh i don't know if i actually want to put this in the show tag. that's a lot of people. that's a lot of people that might see this.#fuck it we ball#voltron#anyway. as i said if you like music and you have songs that you think fit please send em over#also who wants to talk about shallura? i want to talk about shallura.#i rewatched the first ~3 seasons (the best part of the show and some of season 3) with my roommate a while back and.#ngl if we're strictly talking about the show itself and not fanworks. i care about shallura SO much more than i care about klance.#oh i should probably tag#klance#in case anyone has that blacklisted and just doesn't wanna see it#BACK TO MY POINT.#rewatch seasons 1 and 2 and you will see there was a REASON everyone included shallura in the background of their fics#and it wasn't just shoving 'space mom' and 'space dad' together#there is a very real and very compelling dynamic there. the mutual respect. the connection that comes with taking responsibility.#watch shiro's whole deal after allura gets herself captured so that he can go free and try telling me it's all in my head. just TRY.#anyway i have a lot of complicated thoughts about shiro's sexuality and most of them boil down to I Don't Think It Was Planned#i think they shoved it in last minute because somebody higher up#(not the writers i don't blame u writers i know that you have people breathing down your necks telling you what you can and can't do)#some higherup didn't like any queer storylines that might have been in the works and pulled them from the show#but then there was fan backlash because... gay people are loud now? people wanted A Queer In Space? wild thought#so they had to save their ass and actually deliver on what they had promised in interviews/on the internet/idk i didn't keep up too much#because it was so clumsily revealed! there was no buildup!#it felt very shoehorned to me unfortunately. when a) they had already built a solid and compelling potential relationship for shiro#(see above)#and b) klance was? right there? like. dude. you /had/ to have seen that. or at least some of it????#backstory dead fiance was not the best move vis a vis queer representation and i reject him#if you want me to care about a relationship try going back to storytelling basics and Show Don't Tell :)#not giving you brownie points for that 'queer representation' :)#anyway. that's my shallura manifesto in the notes.
