The Real Anime Awards of 2022
Last year, I made my own categories for the Crunchyroll Anime Awards (including worst girl, prettiest protagonist, and biggest disappointment, among others), and it was so much fun, I decided to do it again this year, but with different categories. So without further ado, here are the nominees for the real anime awards of 2022.
Biggest Chad
Shikimori (Shikimori’s not just a cutie)
Tumblr media
Tengen Uzui (Demon Slayer-Entertainment district arc)
Tumblr media
Marin Kitagawa (My Dress Up Darling)
Tumblr media
    Najimi (Komi Can’t Communicate)
Tumblr media
Aileen Dautriche (I’m The Villainess, So I’m Taming The Final Boss)...girl really said “fuck the rest of the harem game, I’m marrying the demon lord him
self”
Tumblr media
    Ranko (Akiba Maid War)
Tumblr media
Show With The Most Drip:
Rent A Girlfriend season 2
My Dress Up Darling
Ya Boy Kongming
Vanitas No Carte season 2
Shadows House season 2
Birdie Wing: Golf Girls’ Story
Best Trash:
    Rent A Girlfriend season 2
That one harem sex slave isekai, idk I didn’t watch it
    World’s End Harem
    A Couple of Cuckoos
The Rising of the Shield Hero season 2
Love Flops (Yes, I know about the twist. No, that doesn’t stop it from being an amazing dumpster fire.)
Best CONCEPT For An Isekai:
The Executioner And Her Way Of Life
    Isekai Ojisan
I’m The Villainess, So I’m Taming The Final Boss
    Reincarnated As A Sword
Life With an Ordinary Guy Who Reincarnated Into A Total Fantasy Knockout
Trapped in a Dating Sim: The World of Otome Games is Tough for Mobs
Anime whose OP Goes The Hardest FOR NO REASON:
Gunjou no Fanfare (”Move The Soul”- JO1) ...this is a show about horse racing...
Teppen (”Top of the Laugh”- Teppen All Stars)...this is a show about stand up comedy...
    Isekai Ojisan (“Story”-Mayu Maeshima)
Akiba Maid War (“Maid Daikaiten”- Ton Tokoton Staff)
Golden Kamuy season 4 (”ALI”-Never Say Goodbye feat. Mummy-D) Yes, it’s technically a drama, so the OP fits it, but we all know it’s more of a comedy. Half the time they’ll be telling a dick joke, and it will cut to this OP.
Call of the Night (“Daten”-Creepy Nuts) Seriously, think about it. Why does this OP go so hard? The show is about a guy walking around at night. They didn’t have to come for us like this, but they did, and I love it.
Best Couple: I know this used to be a Crunchyroll category, but I’m bringing it back anyway.
Sasaki and Miyano (Sasaki to Miyano)
Tumblr media
Yor and Loid (Spy x Family)
Tumblr media
Desumi and Fudo (Love After World Domination)
Tumblr media
Kaguya and Shirogane (Kaguya-sama Love Is War season 3)
Tumblr media
Tsukasa and Hinata (Life with an Ordinary Guy who Reincarnated into a Total Fantasy Knockout)
Tumblr media
*This is technically a spoiler, since the show doesn’t start as a romance...so just fyi* Aharen and Raido (Aharen-san is Indecipherable)
Tumblr media
Biggest Surprise
Birdie Wing: Golf Girls’ story
Ya Boy Kongming
Shinobi no Ittoki
Akiba Maid War
Romantic Killer
Akebi’s Sailor Uniform (went in expecting a cute slice of life…got an uncomfortable nightmare)
Smartest OP:
    Chainsaw Man
    Chainsaw Man
    Chainsaw Man
    Chainsaw Man
    Mob Psycho 100 season 3
    To Your Eternity season 2
Most dunked on protagonist:
    Nagomu Irino (Deaimon)
    Kabe-Taijin (Ya Boy Kongming)
Izumi (Shikimori’s Not Just A Cutie)
    Kazuya (Rent A Girlfriend)
    Ataru Moroboshi (Urusei Yatsura)
    Mikoto Shiratori (Ryman’s Club)
Most Ridiculous Concept For A Sports Anime That Actually Works:
    Birdie Wing: Golf Girl’s Story
Tumblr media
    Ryman’s Club
Tumblr media
    Gunjou no Fanfare
Tumblr media
    Tribe Nine
Tumblr media
    Blue Lock
Tumblr media
But who cares what I think? What categories would you make for your own anime awards?

how different are the anime and manga? are there certain things you like about one more than the other?
very different, like night and day. i'll leave season 2 (kyoto saga) aside and just talk about season 1, since the movie is a side/non-canon story (i really love it tho) and season 2 is like 90% canon (minus the last episode with that scene where rin & yukio talked. in the manga it was a whole mini arc with them talking to eachother amidst a fight with high tension, rather than them just chilling by a river lmao)
the most apparent scene that was different from the anime & manga was the first chapter/episode 1-2, where shiro died. the anime made it into a pretty fascinating & exciting intro to the series, with rin getting hired as a grocery store clerk, and ending with a battle against demons coming after him. where the manga, while still at its core having the same important moments (rin looking for a job, having delinquents jump him, and shiro getting possessed), it was really just a sad scene with no one except himself, shiro & satan bearing witness to the events of that night. out of fear he caused his father's possession/death, he never speaks about it to anyone. so no one really knows how that night unfolded. unlike the anime having the priests see everything (kinda awkwardly) and then later yukio showing up.
the manga really expands upon & fleshes out the characters, whereas the anime (s1) really.. flanderizes them. i think yukio is the most painful example, he is very much not the irrational "all demons are evil" kinda guy, hes truly just a kid indoctrinated into the exorcists mindset since he was 7, but the anime never really showed how nuanced and deep he is, so he became a punching bag for people to easily/mindlessly hate. also, he is NOT a half demon like rin. he's fully human just with some..Peculiarities lol (iykyk)
anyways, blue exorcist truly shines as a slow burn story, we are 145 chapters in (with the next chapter being just a few days away) and have only just now touched upon the aspects that the final parts of season 1 showed. but it is completely different, in almost every aspect. yet you can still see the resemblances to the anime, i wont get too into it for spoilers, but yk the scene with rin's sword breaks? in the anime they repaired it & everything was fine again. but in the manga, rin permanently changes from it abruptly being broken. for better and worse. afterwards, it becomes a whole underlying character arc.
season 1 was like the story's blueprint, its building blocks in a sense. the manga is truly where it shines, letting the characters grow and each have their own moments & developments before things get really heated within it's world.
it also divulges into the lore in almost a philosophical level: what really are demons & humans, are they truly so different from eachother? with rin being the focus of this question as people say he is Both human and demon and yet simultaneously being Neither at the same time.
the world building becomes expanded upon, by leaps and bounds. we see how the order/exorcists really operate. we find out What demons truly are, and their real reasons to be against humans. we find out what really happened during the blue night and what lead up to that. the world feels more open & wide, and everything feels so intertwined.
it also touches upon some VERY dark and heavy subjects, becoming more and more dark as it progresses. from mental illness, trauma & generational trauma to war, suicide, human experiments & corrupt organizations. and yet despite this darkness it still sends a good message that despite things being bad, its still worth it to keep living. and the author just knows the perfect moments to grab people by their heartstrings with it.
s1 is not Bad per-se, sometimes im harsh on it due to me personally being obsessed with the manga's canon. it does have its cute filler scenes (i actually love that rin got a grocery job in episode 1) and its pretty enjoyable as a cute fluffy feel-good anime. i first watched the anime+movie as a kid in 2015 and loved it, but it felt like it had far more potential. which is where the manga DELIVERED, by leaps and bounds.
however, now that the anime is focused on adapting it faithfully, this will change within the future. especially once get more canon episodes compared to the vast amount of manga content lol. but until then, i suggest to check out the manga 🫡
TL;DR: this is the anime vs the manga (in a good way LOL)

is there any magical girl anime still out there that doesn't have any fanservice? Shows like Precure, Cardcaptor Sakura or Madoka?
And if there isn't, are there at least any shows where the fanservice isn't with elementary school girls?

Saw your tags and omg HARD AGREE. Dragon Cry is SO bad nfkanmdsa
ME AND YOU SHAKING HANDS
Actually yes thanks for giving me the excuse to rant. Hold on. I'm typing furiously rn.
-Okay first of all they gave us the most ridiculously confusing plot I've ever seen. The twist with Sonya being Animus was kinda cool but they never really. Explained why she had a bond with him? She mentioned he used to be kindhearted at some point but we never see that literally ever at any point in the movie?
-The storyline is so all over the place it's a HOT mess. Especially the scene right after Natsu escapes the weird bird cage thing he runs off to find the others and suddenly they're all there? For some reason? Where did they come from. Why didn't they have a little reuniting scene. I literally rewound the movie to make sure I didn't accidentally skip a scene but nope they just made the most awkward cut/story progression in history I guess!!!
-The fanservice was so. SO bad. Like yeah the majority of the time I can at least tolerate it but this time it just made me extremely uncomfortable. Why are Erza and Lucy's boobs SO fucking large. Why did they have to make Lucy dance in like two strips of cloth. I thought I woke up in an alternate universe where Fairy Tail was a hentai. I genuinely wanted to vomit lmao
-The animation style really threw me off like I can tell it was either animated by a different studio or they wanted to try a different art style for the movie? But it just felt wrong and the proportions and faces were weird and. Yeah idk.
-What was up with the Three Stars?? Iirc we never got to learn their names or what their motivations were they were literally just. There. And they were built up to be these super powerful wizards only to get their asses kicked by FT like two scenes later. I get that being a movie obviously the fights had to be shortened but they literally did the same thing in Phoenix Priestess but WAY better. They really were like yeah uh we need some enemies for Team Natsu to fight let's just go with these guys and not give them any personality or backstory or motivations. (Except for the doll dad he was okay I guess)
-WHY WAS LEVY THERE. LITERALLY. ACTUALLY. She literally did nothing she served NO purpose in the movie she was just there?? Did they just want to shove in as many cameos as possible??? I know generally Levy isn't much of a fighter which is fine, I was kinda expecting them to do a Gajevy scene where Gajeel rescues her from some soldiers or smth which would have been fine but they didn't even do that. She literally just stood there and had like 2 voice lines. GO GIRL GIVE US NOTHING
-SPEAKING OF CAMEOS this is more personal beef than anything but man WHYYY wasn't Loke in the movie,, my boy my beloved my stupid idiot lion I'm so mad he wasn't even onscreen for like, 5 seconds
-I'm sorry but Juvia was so unhinged this movie her possessive/stalker behavior over Gray was actually super fucking creepy lmao
-What did they do to Happy. What the FUCK did they do to Happy
Tumblr media
THEY MASSACRED MY BOY. LOOK AT HIM. HE'S GOT ANXIETY
-ALSO the scene where Happy and Lucy were crying over Natsu and we got tons of flashbacks from his POV of people who are important to him? WHY THE FUCK WASN'T HAPPY THERE?? They literally showed everyone from Fairy Tail precious to Natsu except Happy and I'm just sitting here like. HELLO?? You are SO wrong for that
-I will say I DID enjoy the little Nalu teasers we got especially the scene where Natsu showed Lucy the stars 🤧
But yeah I was here for this and this only:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Nalu + Happy family bonding moments made it OKAY
Anyway sorry rant over. Dragon Cry bad. Natsu's brief moment of looking half dragon was a super sexy character design choice but the buildup is not worth it imo

whenever i think of a cool worldbuilding addition/adjustment for any high-fantasy work, i write it down as part of my own original fictional world. i've found it's a lot better for my brain bc it's fun, it's constructive, and i can do whatever the hell i want with it.
...unfortunately, bc i really never give a fuck about fictional religions, mythology, politics, or military history, my worldbuilding is mostly just (1) Weird Things About Elves/Orcs and (2) elaborate descriptions of their cooking, livestock, and agriculture. i have no idea what this fantasy country's system of government is, but i do know that the thriving fishing industry means adept cryomancers are always in demand to keep the fish fresh! :)

re: you reading name of the rose: did you watch the movie as well? do you tend to seek out adaptations of novels at all and do you have a preference in which order you watch/read them?
i haven't and i didn't know there was one!
if i read a novel and like it and then sometime after that a film version is released, i will often watch it. however, i don't usually seek out adaptations that were released before i read the novel. (exceptions where i read a book and then looked for film adaptations that already existed: i did seek out film adaptations of the count of monte-cristo (though sadly i still haven't found the french miniseries that sounded so interesting). and i've watched several adaptations of jane austen's novels.) so i probably won't watch the name of the rose movie unless i hear something specific about it that intrigues me.
in general, i'd rather read the book before watching the movie, but i don't take this to the level of refusing to watch a movie if i haven't read the book yet. i'm trying to think if there are any cases where i watched a movie and liked it and then sought out the book, and the only one that's coming to mind is reading volumes of the natsuyuu manga after having watched the anime. which just tells you how much i love natsuyuu!

Do you have experience with doing taxidermy on cats? Mine won’t be passing away anytime soon (hopefully and thank god), but I’d like to preserve his pelt and skull…even just thinking about losing him almost makes me inconsolable, but I want to start considering it now rather than when it’s too late….
I do! Most of pets I've worked on were cats.

Hello! I’d like some anime recs please :)
I’ve been looking for some online but a lot are really obscure or hard to find so if anyone knows good ones with these tropes that would be great!
I like protective/over protective older brother tropes in animes for their younger brothers or sisters and I also really like the tropes where a mentor or someone the main character looks up to is like a father to them (like Shanks with Luffy and Roy with Ed and Al)
If anyone has good recs I’d love to hear them

I consider any interaction between animals and small children a success if there's 2 things - no wounds and no crying
Today while getting the Christmas stuff out of my parents' attic, there was a little brown bat clinging to a board my mom used to use to put a Christmas tree on just snoozing away. One of my sisters and my mom freaked out a bit cause of it and the other sister wasn't thrilled
So I went and grabbed a plastic container and a piece of cardboard to scoop the bat up and take it out to put in the wood pile, safe from both small children and the Dog (who has murdered several bunnies this summer).
My niece, who is turning Six, wanted to know what I was holding. We had something like the following interaction:
"I'm holding a bat. We've gotta be nice cause he's sleeping."
"he's small."
"yep. Bats are very small."
"can I touch it?"
"no, that might hurt the bat, and we don't wanna do that. We don't wanna scare the bat either."
"ohhhhh. Can I carry the bat outside?
"sorry kiddo, I don't think your mom would appreciate me letting you carry it."
"aww."
And when I was outside just about to put the bat in the wood pile, she asked if she could take a picture and I was like "you know what? Sure!" Cause I was thinking "I do not want to traumatize this child and make her afraid of bats, and her getting a positive interaction with this bat now is a good thing"
And she very carefully took a picture of the bat, who was still snoozing away in the container I'd scooped it into.
The bat, by the way, was just a lil brown bat; I've never actually seen one that chill with being scooped into a container - it put up a token protest when I first scooped it into the container, but soon settled down. And it just crawled down into the back of the wood pile to bunker down all nice and safe.
All in all, 10/10, successful interaction between toddler and wildlife
