✨ Grimm and I have a Re-Animator AU set in the Forgotten Realms (maybe we’ll write something from it someday—I’m manifesting).

It’s called The Thread Between Graves, and it follows what’s left of three people who were once in love, and who never said what they meant until it was far too late. Dan, Herbert, and Megan shared a life—scientific, obsessive, intimate—and when it ended in fire and death, only Herbert survived. Briefly.

Now Dan lives again, his soul bound to Herbert’s in a ritual that broke more than one law of nature. Megan lives again too, but not all of her returned. The part that still loved Dan refused to follow, and it lingers in the body of the Bride���a screaming echo that haunts the marshes and calls for her healer.

𖦹 its rather boring to listen to but he looks so proud of himself while explaining it, how could you not listen?????

𖦹 all this leads to is some rather lewd acts back at his apartment as he tries to reassure himself that he's much better than paul allen and taunts you asking if you think paul allen could make you feel this way

𖦹 rants on to you about his music collection and explains how he thinks this song led them to stardom and someone was an idiot for not releasing this and that as a single and not putting these songs in this album and yadayadaya

𖦹 great if you actually are bothered to listen to him rant on for ages horrific if you aren't, gets quite offended if you don't show much interest in his music

𖦹 i get if if you don't tho, its really something...

𖦹 we all know this man is a complete germaphobe so be absolutley horrifically aware of that unless you fancy getting yelled at

𖦹 if you ever feel a lil faint abt all that stuff he just puts a reassuring hand on your shoulder cuz hes a lil awkward

𖦹 if you ever get attacked by one of the re-animated he literally doesn't leave your side, mainly to see the severity of your injuries to examine the strength of the reanimated and the other tiny bit because he cares for you

𖦹 has shit talking sessions about dr hill w/ you, it mainly consists of him getting rather heated over the fact he plagiarizes his work and ya know the whole 6-12 mins thing

𖦹 is very clingy with you when dr hill is around as he doesn't want him to make any creepy ass remarks about you so he sticks to your side like he sticks to his research

𖦹 really appreciates is when you cook for him as he's a total basement dweller and doesn't leave it for food

𖦹 so lets say you actually did make something for him he would be really surprised and would be rather amused that you care enough to make him something and he'll gladly eat it

𖦹 also doesn't sleep a lot, so if and when he comes up from the basement he will be taking a nap on you

𖦹 speaking of him taking naps, he'll just plonk on top of you when he wants to take a nap so

𖦹 at any time, like you could be in bed ready to finally sleep and then he starts rambling about the R.E.M cycle and how benificial sleep is for the body yet he gets absolutley NONE

𖦹 isn't very good at expressing affection for you bc he's herbert so those naps and his rants are actually his way of showing he rlly likes you

𖦹 kissing isn't his favourite thing in the world bc of germs and stuff, so he presses quick kisses to your forehead, nose and cheek such a gentleman

𖦹 but, when herberts all whiny and annoyed at life he will be down for a cheeky make out sesh

𖦹 he gets very flustered after it which is pretty funny to watch so he usually distracts himself with science

I have never been less surprised by a characterization and it's one of the only things I'll accept from the novel as canon. Because it was already canon in the movie. I know old Gen X stoner types and I know Dan is one of them, I know it in my bones.

It's only missing a Frank Frazetta poster and a painting of mushrooms with faces, and only because they're still in one of those boxes Dan hasn't unpacked yet.

Dan Cain can roll a blunt that will give you an out-of-body experience. Dan Cain can take fat rips off a bong that will render lesser folks speechless, melting into the sofa, and gently hallucinating. Dan Cain says your edibles ain't shit and he means it for real.

And you just know that when Herbert walked in and took a single breath, he went "Oh, okay, if blackmailing him for banging the Dean's daughter doesn't work, I can always, as humans say, 'rat him out' to 'the fuzz'."

- He is the exact opposite to your highly emotional self. He'll rarely show genuine sadness let alone cry, chances are he does feel those things at least to some degree but does not at all get the intense physical reactions outside of a neurological standpoint.

- Herbert seems a little irritated with your sensitivity at first. He might give an apathetic remark, though it's more just his general reaction to things he finds distracting from his work than him having something against you specifically.

- If you were one of his experiments/someone he had any reason to note/care about specifically, he may just pretty much study you. He wouldn't do it maliciously but he'd test the grounds of what would and wouldn't upset you, not full on TRY to upset you but view it from more of a scientific perspective.

- If you were close enough, like Dan levels of his radar, he'd likely ATTEMPT the closest he can to comfort you if you were struggling enough. Just the silent, offbeat physical affection similar to what he'd do for Dan.

- If something he said hurt your feelings, he might get a little defensive rather than apologetic. " I didn't mean it that way, Y/N. You have got to be less reactive. " Deep down he does care about you, he doesn't want you to cry or be upset, but if it interferes with his studies that may not show directly.

Headcanon that Gruber became Herbert's adoptive father after the chemical fire killed his parents. HOWEVER, unable to swallow his pride, Herbert constantly referred to him by his full name or his title, never 'dad', until Gruber's untimely death.

That is until during a heated debate in front of the class about Hill’s plagiarism of Gruber's work, Herbert gets too emotional and, in a moment of vulnerability, slips up by referring to Gruber as "his father," for everyone to hear.
