A very long, sad deep dive on the Snow & Regina dynamic, post-everything, for anon

snow and regina are best friends. it's very weird. nobody really wants to use that phrase around regina lest she fireball them... snow really really wants to use that phrase all the time (this is their whole dynamic lol u don’t need to read the rest of the post)

i would say it happened naturally, but it really didn't. it happened with a lot of hard work, honesty, effort, dedication to being better from both of them, and then once all of that was done it was natural, it was sort of impossible to be any other way.

because snow and regina have known each other a long time. longer than most people in their family, in their town. and despite everything that happened after, all the tragedy and pain that the adults around them orchestrated, they were once two little girls that should have been friends. little snow idolised regina and looked up to her in every way, the beautiful kind hearted girl who saved her from a horse, and the instinctive bond between them was always there. there was a sisterly relationship there from the start, and i think for regina as a lonely girl with an awful family life, snow was sweet, and refreshing company to have, even if she got in the way sometimes (just like a little sister would).

and then of course everything comes crashing down, and it is snow's fault but it also isn't, because at the end of the day she was just a little girl mourning her own mother, who cora knew exactly how to manipulate.

but i think the reason regina never saw it this way was because she too was very young and sheltered and her worldview was totally limited by cora's abuse: when regina was snow's age, nothing she did would ever be excused by 'but i was a child'. at snow's age, she had to mind everything very carefully because to put one foot wrong was to be punished severely, held 100 percent accountable. i truly believe the reason regina never excused snow for her age is because she was never excused for hers, ever, even as a tiny child, and as a victim of such abuse in such a controlled environment it never would have occurred to her that that was wrong, or even abnormal.

(i believe a big part of regina and snow's relationship healing was regina's worldview shifting as she grew and changed and worked on healing herself, because as she reevaluted the things cora taught her, she can see the world and the past events in a whole new light. this is of course, a hard and complex process that regina is still working on, but ultimately she does come to realise snow was a child who meant no wrong, who only wanted to help, regardless of the outcome. which doesn't make it not her fault, necessarily, but it adds layers she could not accept before)

regina was married to king leopold for a long time. this is something i've spoken about before, but it's still something i think isn't so well understood, purely because the show didn't go into it that much (and i believe it didn't because it would have simply been too dark and uncomfortable for primetime abc. the writers knew the situation they had put themselves in and kept a distance). if snow was about 10 when regina and leopold married, and 18 when he died, that is 8 years. the better part of a decade. that is a long, long time, especially for a grieving, growing, traumatised girl like regina trapped in the most awful environment in which literally every powerful adult around her was brutally using her in one way or another, manipulating and preying on different parts of her trauma, grief and vulnerability. (while her brain was still developing and processing everything that had already happened and she had zero support system, zero outlet for any emotions. like, some of y'all do not understand how fucked up regina is.,, like, think about that. or don't if you don't wanna be sad forever)  

and all the while, the little girl who caused it all sees nothing wrong! no difference in their relationship, to her! except now she wants to call her mother. (even stepmother is bad enough from a girl no more than 8 years younger than you) and thinking about this stage of their relationship is agonizing to me. regina is at princess snow's beck and call, and this hurts because despite everything, she still feels some affection for her, that sisterly love did not die clean with daniel. the hatred and the blame and the fury just go along with it now, except she cannot express one bit of it. she has to smile and play dolls with her like everything is fine.

snow truly, for a few years at least, saw nothing wrong, or at least convinced herself nothing was wrong because her worldview as a well loved princess meant she could easily excuse any questionable things she picked up on. and this is something i think she definitely struggles with later, and even way into her healed post everything relationship with regina. (we talk a lot about regina's guilt and internally never feeling able to atone for it all, but god, snow feels so much guilt for everything regina went through. and i think at some point, they are able to talk about it. not in depth. not in detail. but with very few words, they both understand the depth of meaning and of immense shared pain. regina is not sure what she feels about forgiveness, but she knows she loves snow, and that snow has always loved her. she knows that now they are family, and their time together is lovely, and so she has acceptance at least, if not forgiveness).

i think the moment leopold is dead and snow is out on her own, she starts reconsidering everything. in the last few years she has questioned things a little more, but never let herself really go there, because she has never had to, and why would she when it is so painful? but alone, with her father dead and regina behaving so out of character (or is she, snow wonders), she can't help but look back without the rose tinted lens of her childhood. she remembers things. regina's silences and trembles at the breakfast table. the way she was ignored, sidelined, stared at. the dark circles under her eyes. all those times they had been playing, or walking, and regina seemed to be a million miles away, jolted back to earth only by snow's insistence.

more reluctantly, she thinks about her father and the way he treated her. the way he looked at her. the way he spoke to her (or didn't). spoke about her. the things he must have done. this is something snow still doesn't really process for a long time, because snow idolised her father, but eventually she cannot deny he must have hurt her.

and then there's that episode of season 1 where we get the dialogue 'she thinks i ruined her life' 'did you?' 'yes'. i think bandit snow, processing these things, dealing with a lot of new feelings of anger and pain, started putting two and two together. (but i don't think she fully confronts the real, most awful truth until years later, because she can't.)

i think ultimately the thing that hurts the most about all they went through when they were basically at war was that deep down, they still cared for each other. 'love never left the room' and all that. hatred and pain and fury existed too, overwhelmingly, overpoweringly so, but ultimately they grew up together. (it's just one of them grew up having to 'raise' the other). they still had  memories tined with warmth of horse riding together, walking together.

and so when they do start to heal, (as i believe snow always fiercely hoped they would, deep down), it's not so much that they have to create a relationship but to rebuild and unearth one that was already there, one that never should have been torn down like it was. of course it's tentative at first, but snow never once stopped having hope that one day regina would change and they would find their way back into each others lives. and once the trust is back, the feeling of family, of working together for the same goal and being willing to risk everything protecting each other because of circumstance...

once that's there, it's the other things that re emerge more softly and slowly.

the coffee at granny's. first, a little awkward, a little quiet without emma and david and henry to fill the gaps in conversation. but gradually, they realise they have a lot to talk about, a lot of shared opinions in ways that matter and vastly differing opinions in ways that don't, but are fun to debate.

the parenting advice. the stories regina has to share about henry as a little boy, the grandson whose first ten years snow only ever saw as a school teacher. the way regina helps her learn to care for neal. the passing on to him of henry's saved onesies and blankets.

the silly jokes that gradually start to form between them, against all odds.

the teaming up against david and emma when they suggest something particularly dumb.

the cooking together! snow is hopeless but enthusiastic, regina is skillful and finds it calming, so it becomes a thing.

the clinking wine glasses at family dinners.

the extreme competition on board game nights.

the hugs at the end of the day, which go from being stiff and quick and awkward with pain and memories caught up in every brush of the fingers, to warm and natural as anything.

the way snow is able to sit down with regina when she is caught up in her own thoughts and issues, and give her rational advice from a far more positive and balanced place than regina's brain allows her. the way she is able to hold regina's hand and support her. (it feels like making up for past tragedies. not nearly enough, but it's something.)

the way regina, equally, is able to keep snow grounded and bring her down to earth when she's panicking, the way she can simply and efficiently allow her to talk through her worries and daily struggles, give her space to ramble and talk and be, but also to give her to the point, no nonsense, blunt advice that snow needs and rarely gets anywhere else.

the way that somehow, strangely, against all odds, snow beings mothering regina a little, in a weird turnaround of events that feels more right and more balancing than anything else. the way she holds her hand, looks out for her, checks in with her, gives that kind of advice and reflection. because now it's regina who needs it, and snow who can provide it. because somehow, seamlessly, regina also became her daughter in law, and her relationship with emma is something that brings snow a deep sense of peace, gratitude, warmth. (now regina is truly family in the beautiful way she always was meant to be. now she knows regina and emma will both be cared for, loved, as they deserve. she knows someone will look after regina, someone will ground emma. they will laugh and cry and build a home and life together, a life not too dissimilar from the one with daniel that snow inadvertently stole from regina a long time ago)

i think they do speak about things that have transpired between them, sometimes, when it comes up and one or both of them feel they have to vocalise something. it's never in front of others, even david and emma. some things are entirely between the two of them, and nobody else will understand, or needs to.

they speak softly, respectfully, giving each other space and quiet validation. sometimes they cry, or get angry, but it's never really at each other and they both understand this now. sometimes they cry for the girls they were and what was taken from them both. sometimes one or both of them feels or thinks something they cannot speak or say to the other, and they both respect that.

i think they have both apologised. sincerely. and i think they don't need to go into any detail, really. they both just know.

but they are equals now, entirely. no more titles, no more real power dynamics, despite any maternal/caretaking instincts that snow might feel. they are the equals they were always supposed to be, and the people with the friendship the girls they once were would have wanted.

and they can laugh together. this is the thing that warms my heart most. just thinking of snow and regina laughing together, simply, over some very silly joke that isn't even that funny.

random ouat headcanons

-david is the only person regina and emma will allow to teach henry swordfighting but then one day regina watches them spar and looks at david, tells him his form is terrible, then disarms him in less than 10 seconds (henry then only wants regina to teach him)

-regina and zelena have sister girl trips to the spa (much like the eq and zelena did that one time) and it consists of them bitching about everyone else for 3 hours

-emma and david get into random competitions with each other all. the. time. whether it be who can fold laundry the fastest or put away the dishes after dinner better or who can lift the heaviest think in the loft, you name it and you can guarantee they've made it a competition with each other

-regina has somehow become the unofficial babysitter for everyone's little children because in all reality, she was the only one with any experience raising a child and it not going horribly. so every few weeks her house becomes a daycare and she watches babies neal, robin, and gideon so that their parents can get some alone time. she absolutely loves it, and occasionally emma and henry will come around to help and they'll order pizza and watch disney movies with a different kid on each of their laps while regina remains baffled by the corporation that is disney

-zelena and emma are actually pretty good friends, they go out drinking every once in a while but it normally ends with some kind of magical mishap

-regina and the charmings have the weirdest but best relationship dynamic because sometimes regina will have to explain the most simple things to them and be annoyed every second but other times they'll just hold her while she cries and be better parents to her than her own ever could have been. emma has walked in on them having tea at the loft and at the mansion more than once, and it freaks her out every time

-hook tried beating snow at darts once when the gang went out drinking one night. it ended with her holding his hook hostage for the next day and a half

-robin is a surprisingly good cook so he tends to be in charge of dinners

-regina only gave snow a key to her house because she was sick of having to replace the locks snow kept breaking to get in (the last straw was when she broke in so she could ask about a recipe she'd stolen during a previous break in)

-snow and robin go out to the forest and practice their archery to decompress

-basically everyone but emma and henry hate using phones, so everyone just tends to show up to wherever the person they want to talk to is at. regina, rumple, and zelena especially tend to just teleport to whoever they want to talk to, which has led to some very uncomfortable encounters in the past

just some mills sisters headcanons because I love and cherish them.

zelena and regina kind of have that " older sister acts younger than younger sister " relationship in the fandom for the most part (?), but I do love protective older sister zelena

though zelena can be protective of regina, gina did take a while to really let her sister do this

" zelena, stop treating me like a child " " sis, that isn't needed " " I can handle it myself "

that sort of thing

I believe over time, while zelena countlessly treated regina like the younger sister she is, regina warmed up to it. she grew to like having an older sister who protects her and makes sure nobody dares messing with her (but who would, right?)

zelena really started doing this because of their earlier years, back when they were kids

before cora took their memories, zelena had no family who she felt cared about her. when she learned she had a little sister she gained all these feelings, feelings of wanting her safe, wanting to protect her, etc

when she relearned all that in s5, it all just came rushing back to her (a slow process but the feelings did come back)

as the older sister, zelena was naturally protective of her after cora gave them their memories back

she liked the idea that regina could lean on her, that she could be reginas shield whenever she needed it

she finally had a real family and a purpose to someone

I imagine she secretly reveled in all the times regina had come to her for any kind of help, or just for a good sister distraction

zelena can be loud as we all know, but I don't think she'd ever bring up the fact that regina needed her in a " haha you're pathetic " kind of way

but with that, I do think they playfully mess with each other once in a while

whether that's small pranks or just sibling banter

to others, they look like they can't stand each other, but they do love their sister a lot and would do anything for her :]

OUAT Thoughts Pt.28--Episodes 14-15

I have watched through S3E15; spoilers DNI. Also, spoiler warning for anyone further behind than I am.

—I think Bae’s death might’ve destroyed me even more than Rumple’s death. I didn’t really believe Rumple would be killed permanently. This one I do believe. What’s the point of bringing Rumple back if he can’t be with his son anymore?

—Rumple finally gave up the dagger for Bae. How dare that be in the same episode as Bae’s death! It’s too tragic.

—Tryna be positive here…it’s pretty hard. There were a lot of things about these episodes I adored, but A) I’m too focused on crying over Bae to remember them well, and B) many of them were related to Bae and Rumple.

—In this episode, I noticed that Bae’s face just lights up when he smiles. He has the most gorgeous smile lines around his eyes.

—I totally believe in bi4bi Rumbelle. Rumple’s seemed a lil fruity to me (on vibes only) since, like, day one. Belle’s outfit in the fairytale world, particularly the vest, is enough to encourage this headcanon. And it’s my headcanon, so I can have it either way. *shrugs* *dabs*

—Emma wanting to keep Henry’s old memories from him forever is really selfish. He has—well, now, only one other parent—but he has other family members who miss him. It’s especially cruel to Regina to want Henry in the dark. And it’s also not fair to Henry, because that was his real life, and because he deserves to know that he has another mom, a good man for his (dead) father, two grandfathers, and a grandmother.

—Snow’s pregnancy clothes are super cute. She’s got this adorable pink jacket that I absolutely love.

—I firmly believe that all of our heroes have a single braincell between them, and that the Wicked Witch has stolen it already. They’re all acting exceptionally stupid right now. This random lady they’ve never met shows up, claiming to have been a friend of one of Snow’s friends, and just happens to be well-versed in being a midwife? How is that not s u s at all, especially with the Wicked Witch running around?

—I was just thinking about how sweet Hook and Bae’s relationship could be, and now I’ll never get to see it again. They did that on purpose.

—And now Rumple is back in his basement cage. He’s completely under the Wicked Witch’s control. And he has nothing to ruminate on but his son’s death. There is literally nothing good in his life.

—Regina’s caught on to Robin being her soulmate. I hope she can work out her complicated feelings about that and start something with him.

—Rumple did look *fine* when he was resurrected from that goo. Although, his resurrection is now part of emotional damage, so…I can’t help looking back on that with a truckload of salt.

—Seriously, this sucks. I can’t stand it.

—I don’t think it would be possible for me to hate the Wicked Witch any more than I already do. Also, I’m bummed that it looks like I won’t actually be seeing most of the other Oz characters.

—That fear shadow thingy was freaky as hell. The glitchy way it moved was hideous. But it’s also a fun little philosophical idea, I guess.

—Rapunzel’s dress and tiara were ridiculously gorgeous. So shimmery and fancy. Also, Rapunzel being brunette from the start is interesting, although it doesn’t seem her hair has any magic in it. I’m not quite sure how I feel about that part.

—Actually, her entire introduction was little weird. I would’ve expected it to be a slightly more important event than a side quest for Charming. On the other hand, that’s refreshing. It somewhat allays my fears that the more modern princesses are going to hog the spotlight. (Especially the Frozen princesses. They terrify me.)

—They really need to work on a memory restoration for Henry. Him not knowing Regina is hurting me. Also, the fact that he doesn’t believe in magic anymore is depressing.

—I can’t believe we went through all of that just for Baelfire to die. It’s so unfair.

—I want Regina to smoke that Witch. I will admit, I’m impressed that OUAT can make that green biddy into even a little bit of a serious threat, but I don’t believe for a second that she’s more powerful than Regina. —If Rumple is forced to kill someone I or he cares about, I might have to quit the show.

—It was pretty stupid of Emma to leave Rumple in the forest by himself. Maybe it wouldn’t do any good to bring him with, considering the Wicked Witch has his dagger, but leaving him there? Not the most intelligent move Emma’s ever made.

—Charming is also the dumbest man alive not to have realized Snow was pregnant—or at least the most oblivious.

—His guilt over having to send Emma away is a decent plot bit, though. That scene where he dreamed about teaching her to dance for her first ball was so sad. It makes sense, and it will no doubt make thing with the new baby a little bit tense, and I’m all here for that.

—I’ve reached the end of the post, and even though I’ve found some positives, I’m still not over Bae’s death. Parents shouldn’t have to watch their children die—that’s that, the end, period. Stuff like Bae’s death, or like Philip Hamilton’s death in Hamilton, is painful to watch.

—It took me forever, but I finally realized that Emma was also Cassidy Sharp in This Is Us (which is, by the way, possibly the best family drama I’ve other seen, other than OUAT). Don’t know what triggered the epiphany, but it happened.

more regina mills headcanons I beg, also, unrelated but how do you feel about dragonqueen ?

ahhh i’m sorry this took so long to answer. it took me a while to try to come up with more lol. i have many but most of them are just kind of half formed thoughts floating around my brain atm. so this will not be nearly as long as my other regina hc posts.

-first off i LOVE dragonqueen. i like all my other regina ships with a little past dragon queen. i think that was very important relationship for regina for sure. stuck in a miserable marriage, being taught magic by rumple who was mercurial and manipulative, i think it was important for regina to have someone like mal. not only to be her friend (or her special lady friend if you catch my drift) but also to teach her more about magic and give her another perspective on it besides rumple’s or cora’s.

-also they fucked in the vault in season 4

-this is random but i just feel like regina can hold her liquor really well

-this is basically canon bc of her apple tree but regina has a really green thumb. i feel like after everything starts settling down she starts growing a real vegetable garden. she gets really into it. bringing baskets of tomatoes and shit to snow and david. sending everyone home with squash every time they come over. she sends henry care packages at college full of produce and he’s like “i live in a dorm there’s not much i can do with this but thanks.” she probably has a floppy hat (but like a classy one).

-this one is so fucking random but hear me out. okay so when i was 10 i went to summer camp and we didn’t have computer or phone access so we had to write letters home. when my mom was buying paper for me to bring she bought me a pack of neon rainbow lined paper because if she bought me regular paper it would be like i was “writing letters home from prison.” for some reason i just feel like regina has the exact same energy about sending henry to college.

-i think she’s one of those women that has a very specific skincare routine but not like the 24 step tiktok ones with all the serums and gadgets. like, you know those older women that insist cold cream is the answer to everything? it’s like that.

-she does the sunday crossword every week in pen. (in my mind, the daily mirror has a sunday crossword)

oh lord... where do we begin. let's start with me meddison/grey's anatomy wips.

so you were never a saint, and i loved in shades of wrong. this wip is currently in progress, two chapters on ao3 so far. basically my take on an angsty s2 meddison. they run into each other constantly at joe's bar and are very sad.

hollywood au. my meddison hollywood au in which meredith is unwillingly dragged into the spotlight after finding out her boyfriend is a. married, and b. famous. she gets a guest role on the same tv show as him and his wife. things spiral from there.

dead derek s4 au. basically what the title implies. a 'what if' scenario in which derek died in s4, and meredith and addison connect over shared grief.

tedstina fic. this wip is if after owen cheats on her, cristina shows up, drenched, at teddy's apartment all 'i didn't know where else to go.' there is lots of sad, gay, pining.

now... we move on to my swan queen wips. there are a lot, be prepared.

sad regina mills fic #1. a very angsty wip about regina's relationship with food, set during s1 of ouat. she's not dealing very well with henry hating her, and she turns to one of her coping mechanisms, which may or may not land her in the hospital.

sad regina mills fic #2. set after cora's death, little snippets of regina reflecting on her mother, and childhood. some hurt/comfort, also hurt/no comfort so.

say don't go song fic. regina reflecting on herself and emma in the middle of the night, with the dagger, after emma's sacrifice post s4 finale. (also regina really misses emma and doesn't know what to do with herself.

s6 regina is sad about emma getting married fic. has this been done before, yes. but i want to do it. anyway, buckle up, this one is very sad. our favorite lovable idiots fight, and make up, there are 'i miss you' texts, and lots of lesbian pining.

camelot hurt/comfort au. a little ficlet, (which could spiral into something bigger if i'm not careful,) in which emma seeks comfort from regina on a day when the voices are really loud. there's bed sharing and cuddles, and also hook is thrown into a tree.

the hanahaki au. um well... this is exactly as it sounds. set like 4b-ish. regina starts coughing up flowers one day, and it slowly gets worse until she's almost dead.

there's bed-sharing in this one. after a fight with her parents, emma shows up at regina's place. there are feelings, angst, and surprisingly maybe fluff.

the road-trip fic. uber driver x runaway bride. that's all i'll say.

neverland rewrite. except swanqueen, and mentions of torture. two hurt women heal together and find their son.

Hi, I really love reading your different hcs about the charming-swan-mills-stiltskin fam! So I'm not sure if you've been asked this previously but I'm wondering what headcanons you have about Regina's childhood. I feel like Cora definitely did a number on her a kid, no doubt.

oh absolutely—whether or not it was because she didn’t have her heart or because she was just genuinely a bad person, cora hurt regina big time during those formative years

there were a few moments where regina saw bits and pieces of a cora who could have loved her, but the older she got, the more cora harped on her and the harder things became

because cora wanted her to be queen and would stop at nothing to get there (i mean, she literally forced her daughter to marry a man three times her age just so she could be higher up in the royal chain and live vicariously through regina)

regina was subjected to a lot of royal training as a kid and anything cora considered “childish” was strictly forbidden

she did attend balls sometimes—after all, her family was royalty—and cora would tell her that at these events, she was to be seen and not heard

which is why she doesn’t know how to dance until david teaches her in camelot. cora thought she looked “too ridiculous” dancing and forbade it

she'd gaslight regina quite a bit too. when regina would complain about something (whether it was "my head hurts" or "i'm cold"), cora would tell her she was just being dramatic

which is partly why it takes so long for regina to truly accept that her brain is the way it is because of everything she's been through

a lot of that self hate regina carries with her comes from cora too. many of the things she hates most about herself came from cora’s consistent belittling

also have to mention her father because even though henry sr. was a bit of coward, he was still regina's biggest supporter throughout this time in her life

although he never put a stop to cora's abuse, he would try to comfort regina when he could (he'd sing her a lullaby or sneak in sweet treats cora wouldn't let her have)

emma is actually so dad vibes she falls asleep on the couch every night the minute she, regina and henry start watching netflix. she kicks up such a fuss about what they watch then just straight up passes out. henry always complains and makes fun of her, but regina (though she would never say it) really likes it. it makes her feel very warm and safe and comforted to be snuggled up on emma's chest watching tv, feeling her breath rise and fall, listening to her silly occasional snores. because even asleep, emma never stops holding her. (and then emma wakes up at the end of the episode or the movie and insists she wasn't asleep and saw the whole thing)

every saturday morning, regina mills has a baking session. she is basically a pinterest mom who also is obsessed with organizing and scheduling, and baking is a hobby that benefits everyone, so it becomes part of her routine. emma is gradually learning to help: this means being annoying in the kitchen, eating ingredients, giving regina cuddles and neck kisses when she's trying to do something, and singing along badly to the music on the radio. though regina pretends to be annoyed, she secretly loves it. after henry grew out of helping her, she always baked alone until emma, and rarely got much joy out of it. now it's one of her favourite parts of the week. simple, peaceful, and happy. (and every time she bakes with emma and then they eat some of the freshly cooled goods together, it undoes cora's voice in the back of her head a little bit, every week her questionable relationship with food gets a little bit better)

as much as emma loves storybrooke, she sometimes misses the outside world, and so another tradition that develops is emma taking regina for date days out of town. they'll pick random towns, forests to hike in, and places to visit and take a leisurely drive, stop for food somewhere. for a while emma gets weirdly obsessed with weird thrift/antique stores and finding the dumbest stuff she can (regina and henry, when he hears, both tease her for 'keeping some Mr Gold genes after being the Dark One') and while regina makes fun, she secretly loves leafing through antique books and reading inscriptions left in them. also, whenever they speak to waitresses or shopkeepers on these outings, they have to make up different stories about how they met. every time, emma comes up with a different story and makes it as rambling and silly as possible, and every time regina smiles and shakes her head and sometimes inputs something funny that comes to mind.

angsty:

i've def spoken about this one before, but regina has nightmares very regularly. multiple times a week, about various things from her past (god knows there's enough nightmare fuel). emma is a light sleeper and lifelong insomniac herself for many reasons, and if she is asleep, she wakes up very quickly when she hears the familiar change in regina's breathing, or feels her lashing out with her hands or feet in her sleep. it aches deep in emma's chest every time, knowing there are things that have happened that will always haunt regina like this, knowing there are some things she can't fight off. and she's still learning what to do with those things, how to help her without a sword and fist, but she wakes her as gently as she can and kisses her forehead, strokes her hair and whispers silly things and dumb jokes to her until they're both okay. regina doesn't like to talk about her nightmares or what they contain, and emma doesn't ask. they just hold each other and learn to feel safe.

idk if this is a controversial one, or if my view of them has just changed a little as i've gotten older, but emma and regina are both people that are still struggling big time with their mental health, processing, healing etc and though they love each other and are definitely on a one way path to peace, there's no way this doesn't cause issues sometimes. when regina and emma fight (beyond the everyday quibbling that undoubtedly means i love you), they fight badly. they both say awful stuff they don't mean or believe. they both spiral. (but afterwards, when they've calmed down and the dust has settled, they always find each other with immense apology and understanding. and the good thing is, because they both struggle, they both understand wholeheartedly what the other one went through, why they said those things, and they know unequivocally that they didn't mean them. their fights are not common, but after them they are always extra caring and tender and honest with each other, just to be sure the other knows how much they are loved.)

this is more sad than actually angsty, but it means a lot to me so. i have forgotten if this is actually canon or not, but regina had a version of daniel's tombstone brought over to storybrooke with the curse and it is still very important to her to visit it regularly, bringing his favourite yellow flowers. emma respects her privacy and that it's a very personal thing, but one day when emma asks where she's going and she says there, regina tells her very gently that she's welcome to come if she'd like. and so emma, after making sure it's not overstepping any boundaries, joins. she is quiet and respectful, holds regina's hand and sits with her there. after a while regina turns to her and tells her how much he would have liked her. how similar they are, in some ways. how totally not in others. before they go, when regina has already left, emma pretends to have forgotten something so she can have a quick moment to touch the stone and tell him a quiet thank you, for loving regina and taking care of her before she could.

zelena & emma bromance.

it takes her a little while to get over the whole killing neal thing, but the more time they’re forced to spend together in family function-settings they realize how well they get along. both had crappy childhoods/abandoned by their parents, scrappy and hotheaded well into young adulthood, sometimes do harmless but chaotic things just because. zelena and emma are the pair that would pregame shots in the bathroom and go on the walk on thanksgiving and come back trashed because they couldn’t deal with snow otherwise. emma introduces zelena to late 90s/early 2000s teen movies (mean girls, 10 things i hate about you, clueless, etc) and zelena starts acting like a socialite from downtown la and wears sunglasses indoors. she puts robin in a basket and carries her around like she’s a purse dog and will only communicate with a purple flip phone she bedazzled herself. zelena gets emma drunk one night and convinces her to be turned into a flying monkey so she can feel what flying is like. emma notices that zelena put pot into the brownie mix mary margaret left out and doesn’t say anything, letting everyone get absolutely trashed while zelena sits back cackling at the havoc she’s wrought. regina is always furious with the both of them but still cooks enough for both of them to have leftovers when they inevitably wander over to the mansion. they fight over who gets the good spare bedroom every time they both spend the night.
