Il racconto di Blaine Anderson Harris: la giovinezza smarrita e solitaria, il matrimonio, la paternità e i suoi progetti per il futuro. 

E' un giorno molto importante per il panorama musicale contemporaneo: Blaine Anderson Harris, noto compositore e cantautore mette momentaneamente da parte le colonne sonore per le grandi industrie cinematografiche e lascia nuovamente che i riflettori brillino su di lui. Quest'oggi Blaine Anderson Harris dà ufficialmente vita alla sua casa discografica, la Musically Interesting Songs il cui scopo, come ribadisce a più riprese, è dare voce al talento e alla dedizione sincera e rispettosa della musica.

In occasione del lieto evento ci concede una lunga intervista in cui ci parla in anteprima del suo prossimo progetto musicale autonomo: un ritorno alla composizione e al canto che i suoi fan hanno atteso trepidanti per molto, moltissimo tempo. Anderson Harris parla con la tipica esuberanza e tranquillità, ammicca alle telecamere con la consueta sicurezza, talvolta ricorrendo a termini espliciti e senza alcun pelo sulla lingua nel formulare le sue opinioni ben ferme su cosa significhi davvero essere un artista e un amante della musica. "La musica è stata la mia salvezza nei momenti peggiori, si può dire che mi abbia guidato verso il mio destino, o non sarei qui quest'oggi. Io le devo tanto ed era giunto il momento che cominciassi a ricambiare il favore e impegnarmi a dare voce a coloro che condividono la mia visione delle cose. Non è solo un hobby a cui dedicare del tempo sottratto al lavoro o alla famiglia: è una passione che deve scuotere nel profondo. Bisogna essere disposti a riversare se stessi, anche e soprattutto i lati scomodi, più intimi e anche i lati oscuri di ognuno di noi e farlo senza pentimento. Bisogna mettersi a nudo. Il mio motto è molto semplice: «più emozioni, introspezione e verità e meno culi, toraci palestrati e tette in esibizione [risata]». "Non che io sia un puritano - ammette l'attimo dopo con un'altra fragorosa risata - ma è un lavoro che va preso molto seriamente. E' fin troppo facile promuovere un artista di bell'aspetto, chiedergli di sedurre l'obiettivo e i fan. Ma il vero artista è quello le cui parole valicano il tempo e lo spazio e universalmente colpiscono l'uomo di qualsiasi cultura, età, orientamento sessuale ed estrazione sociale. La musica deve abbattere barriere e confini ed entrare nella mente, nell'anima e nel sangue di chi l'ascolta e la interiorizza".

Anderson Harris non ha alcun timore di aprirsi al proprio pubblico, anche raccontando i suoi trascorsi personali e indugiando nei momenti più difficili. "Non ho avuto un'adolescenza serena. Non ho mai avuto un vero legame con mio padre,  non ho mai conosciuto mia madre e mi sono sentito a lungo abbandonato da mio fratello, l'unica persona che potessi definire "la mia famiglia". Mi limitavo a sopravvivere ai tempi del liceo, continuando a domandarmi a quale pro mia madre avesse scelto la mia vita anziché la sua, condannandomi a vivere senza un padre e una matrigna che si prendessero cura di me, senza alcuna prospettiva certa per il futuro e apparentemente incapace di legarmi realmente a qualcuno. La mia unica «ora d'aria» era al rientro da scuola, quando ero solo in quella villa e mi sedevo al pianoforte. E' stata la mia governante a insegnarmi i primi accordi, quando ero bambino e a mostrarmi gli spartiti preferiti di mia madre e in quelle ore sentivo che quella rabbia e quell'arsura si placavano. Avevo persino la sensazione che fosse al mio fianco. Smaniavo di imparare e di trovare le note più dolci che mi facessero pensare a lei. Cominciai a prendere lezioni di chitarra e di violino e a comporre le prime melodie. E' così ancora oggi. Quando l'ispirazione langue o devo riflettere su un problema, torno a suonare quelle melodie e ritrovo quella serenità interiore che mi dà la forza di affrontare ogni cosa".

Giungiamo a conoscere le circostanze più delicate e tormentate dei primi amori e del distacco definitivo con la famiglia d'origine. E' in quei momenti che lo sguardo ambrato si fa più fosco e sembra perdere momentaneamente quello scintillio più brioso. "Nei momenti che trascorrevo lontano dalla musica e nelle prolungate assenze di mio fratello a causa dei suoi studi di economia... sì, lo so, è incredibile, ha frequentato un semestre a Yale, ma ha superato a malapena due esami e lì ha incontrato il suo futuro mentore che lo ha spinto alla recitazione [...] Mi sentivo pieno di rabbia e irrequieto, ero insoddisfatto, mi sentivo un estraneo nella mia stessa casa e dannatamente solo e sperduto, fino a quando non sono giunto al punto di rottura. Quando mio padre non ha accettato la mia vera natura e l'idea che mia madre avesse sacrificato la sua vita per un figlio malato e difettoso. Scappai di casa, vendetti la mia amatissima Porsche e mi trasferii a New York e successivamente a Providence. E lì cambiò tutto", mormora alla fine del lungo discorso e lo scintillio dello sguardo torna a brillare, persino più intensamente.

Il primo singolo del suo prossimo album, "Lost Boys Life" non è una mera o banale canzone d'amore, ma già nei primi versi che ci concede di sbirciare, si riesce a cogliere la sua verità, la sua stessa vita e la consapevolezza che la musica e l'amore gli abbiano salvato la vita. "Every night in a different bed", recitano i primi versi e ancora una volta Anderson Harris si confessa senza remore. "Ho fatto cose di cui non sono particolarmente fiero. Dopo essermi allontanato da Washington e avere tagliato i ponti con la mia vita precedente, per molto tempo ho transitato da un'avventura all'altra, da un letto all'altro. Rapporti occasionali, alcol e festini e alla fine della settimana neppure ricordavo il nome, tanto meno lo sguardo dell'ultimo ragazzo con cui avevo passato la notte. Oh, è stato un racconto tutt'altro che banale quando è arrivato il momento di fare il 'discorsetto' ai miei figli [risata] Non avrebbe avuto senso nascondere loro la verità e il mio obiettivo era permettere loro di imparare dai miei sbagli e non replicare gli stessi,ma farne altri. Anche più interessanti magari [risata]".

Giungiamo quindi a scavare ulteriormente nella sfera intima di Anderson Harris e se ha raccontato con aria quasi spavalda e sfrontata delle sue avventure giovanili, nella nostra conversazione c'è un repentino cambiamento di tono e di espressione, quando giunge il momento in cui gli chiedo di raccontarmi del primo incontro con il ragazzo che è stato il suo compagno di vita da quel momento in poi. Lo sguardo si addolcisce e così la voce si fa più soffusa, il sorriso è meno sfrontato ma più devoto. "Kay era il miglior amico di Greengrass [Greengrass Masterson, noto attore] che disprezzavo di più al mondo [risata] e devo ammettere che se inizialmente il nostro flirt telematico (sì ci scambiammo messaggi ai limiti della censura prima che arrivasse in America) era in parte legato anche alla mera soddisfazione di dar fastidio a Greengrass, le cose hanno preso una piega differente. Mi ritrovai letteralmente intrappolato in una rete: io che volevo semplicemente sedurre ed essere sedotto, mi ritrovai fin da subito avvinto da quell'empatia e quella sintonia. E non sto parlando soltanto di quella sessuale, anche se so bene che nessuno la potrebbe mettere in dubbio [ammiccamento] Era come se quella parte più temuta e celata, quella più fragile e delicata, tornasse a risvegliarsi. Ero ossessionato da lui, dal suo respiro, dal battito del suo cuore, da quei riccioli che ricadevano scomposti sul cuscino, da quell'accento inglese, dal luccichio complice del suo sguardo e da quel sorrisetto impudente. Anche a distanza di ore ricordavo il suo tocco, il calore della sua pelle, la morbidezza dei suoi capelli, e avrei saputo disegnare la linea della mascella o delle clavicole. Stavo perdendo il controllo e mi sembrava qualcosa di intollerabile. Poco contava che cercassi di cacciarlo dalla mia mente, che mi sforzassi di andare nuovamente per locali, alla ricerca di un altro paio di occhi azzurri che potessero rimpiazzare i suoi. Tutto ciò che volevo era lui e che lui volesse me, anche se per entrambi significava rinunciare a quella libertà e gettarsi in qualcosa di dannatamente serio e pericoloso. Fu il più grande rischio che corremmo e non me ne sono pentito un solo secondo. In breve tempo è diventato la famiglia che non solo non avevo mai avuto, ma che neppure avevo mai avuto il coraggio di sognare. Ci incontrammo il 31 Ottobre del 2012 e tre anni dopo ci sposammo", conclude con un sorriso più dolce. E proprio il 31 Ottobre di quest'anno, in occasione dell'anniversario, uscirà il suo singolo: un racconto autobiografico e una dedica d'amore.

A questo punto cerco di estrapolargli altre notizie sulla sua famiglia e sulla paternità e ancora una volta ci concede qualche delizioso sprazzo di famiglia, con la consueta vivacità e uno scintillio più dolce dello sguardo. "Diventare padre è stata la mia seconda più grande avventura. Fin da ragazzino mi ero sempre detto che se mai un giorno avessi costruito la mia famiglia, avrei dato tutto me stesso a mio figlio, perché si sentisse protetto, amato e accolto qualunque fossero le sue inclinazioni, i suoi desideri e i suoi sogni per il futuro. Non avrei mai permesso che si sentisse solo, abbandonato e indesiderato. Al contempo vivevo nel terrore che qualche gene di mio padre con il tempo prendesse il sopravvento e fallissi miseramente. Ma la prima volta che tenni tra le braccia un bambino - Ryan, il mio figlioccio - seppi che era ciò che più desideravo al mondo. Un bambino che mi guardasse con lo stesso amore incondizionato e la stessa purezza. Volevo il bambino dell'uomo che amavo", commenta e al ricordo la voce sembra affievolirsi prima che un sorriso ne increspi nuovamente le labbra. "E fu davvero interessante scoprire che lui guardandomi con Ryan avesse desiderato lo stesso. Non soltanto stavamo ponderando l'idea di diventare genitori, ma volevamo entrambi amare e crescere il bambino dell'uomo che amavamo. Fu chiaro fin dall’inizio di quella conversazione che desideravamo due bambini". Sposto quindi la conversazione sui due figli. Si comincia dal primogenito, un altro volto pubblico e amatissimo: Darren Harris Anderson noto per il ruolo di Connor Walsh nella serie tv con l'attrice Premio Oscar Viola Davis, How to Get Away With Murder. "Che posso dire? Interpretare così bene un assassino deve averlo preso da me [risata]", allude alla sua partecipazione ad American Crime Story di cui il regista che aveva già conosciuto ai tempi di Glee, lo scelse per interpretare uno dei serial killer più famosi,  l'affascinante e scaltro Andrew Cunanan. "Se sarà poi vero che la Coliver giungerà al matrimonio, allora mi sembrerà di tornare ai tempi di Glee e della CrissColfer [risata] Darren è letteralmente cresciuto in un set cinematografico. All'epoca io recitavo in Glee e mio fratello si vedeva rinnovato l'ennesima stagione di White Collar. Ricordo ancora quanto si divertisse a gironzolare sul set, guardandosi attorno e osservando affascinato la cinepresa e il modo in cui uno script prendesse letteralmente vita di fronte ai suoi occhi. Credo che fin da quei momenti sia nata la sua passione e quando la maestra gli chiese di mettere su carta i suoi sogni sul futuro, non ebbe alcuna esitazione. Naturalmente mio marito e io lo incoraggiammo, ma cercammo di fornirgli altri stimoli, affinché capisse con il tempo quale era davvero la sua strada. Ad esempio lo portavo spesso con me nel mio studio di registrazione, ho ancora le registrazioni delle sue prime filastrocche imparate a memoria e ha voluto imparare a suonare la chitarra. Assistendo alle sue performance teatrali ai tempi del liceo, divenne sempre più evidente che non solo avesse serbato quella passione, ma che, come nel caso di mio fratello, quello era indubbiamente il suo destino. Temetti segretamente che si sarebbe trasferito alla UCLA ma decise di continuare gli studi alla Tisch Academy e potei trattenere il fiato ancora per qualche anno, prima che diventasse Mr Hollywood".

Quando gli chiedo se in famiglia guardano regolarmente gli episodi delle serie tv di cui è protagonista annuisce con vigore. "Non ci perdiamo un episodio, ma spesso dobbiamo guardarlo più di una volta. Una per seguire attentamente la trama e la prima per commentare ogni sua espressione. Dobbiamo ancora riprenderci da quell'inquadratura di Connor dopo la proposta di matrimonio di Oliver [risata]. Mi piace il personaggio di Connor, per certi versi mi ricorda quel me stesso di cui non sono particolarmente fiero. Ma è cresciuto incredibilmente in quest'ultima stagione, dalla puntata in cui sembra prendersi a cuore il destino di una prigioniera accusata di aver ucciso il marito violento fino alla scena del dialogo tra lui e Viola Davis. A mio modesto e del tutto parziale punto di vista, è stata una delle scene migliori non solo dell'ultima stagione ma dall'intera serie. Puro talento. Dovrebbero girare più scene insieme, ca*** [risata]".

Sposto la conversazione sul secondo figlio che per molto tempo ha brillato di luce riflessa per suo stesso volere, conosciuto principalmente come "il figlio di" o "il fratello minore di" o persino: "il fidanzato della stilista di successo", Luke Anderson Harris. "Mr Writer?", lo appella con una nota ironica e scherzosa che sembra contraddistinguere il loro rapporto. "Oltre ad essere full time il mio nutrizionista e dietologo indesiderato ma devoto [risata] ha sempre avuto una natura molto pacata, incredibilmente paziente e silenziosa. Ancora non so da chi abbia ereditato questi tratti. E' un ragazzo fottutamente intelligente e riflessivo, pondera ogni questione fino allo sfinimento per essere certo di prendere la decisione più giusta. Non ama molto essere al centro dell'attenzione, è quel tipo di persona che sa ascoltare come pochi altri, quindi quella a cui ti rivolgi quando sei in affanno e non sai cosa fare. Anche se poi sei consapevole che metà di quello che dici diventerà un ingranaggio delle sue sinapsi letterarie. Sarei stato fiero di me stesso se in passato gli fossi somigliato anche solo in parte... ma sono fiero comunque che abbia ereditato il mio bel fondoschiena e il gancio destro [risata]. Ha sempre avuto la passione per la scrittura, seconda solo a quella per la sua fidanzata storica, e la sua ambizione più grande era vedere realizzato sullo schermo ciò che era nato nella sua mente da romanziere amante dell'epoca vittoriana, dei gialli e dei thriller”.

Sembra tuttavia che anche il più piccolo di casa Harris Anderson stia meditando di sorprenderci nell’immediato futuro. “Nelle ultime settimane, SPOILER ALERT, si sta preparando con mio marito a un'audizione che potrebbe portarlo sui palchi di Broadway. Ebbene sì, sta ponderando di darsi anche alla recitazione e devo dirmi molto sorpreso ma interessato alla prospettiva. Saremo in prima fila ovviamente".

Quando gli chiedo, un po' provocatoria, se lui e suo marito non si sono mai pentiti di non aver avuto una figlia, non ha alcuna esitazione. "Assolutamente no. Onestamente eravamo terrorizzati all'idea di avere a che fare con una bambina che avesse i nostri geni, soprattutto nel periodo della pubertà con il ciclo mestruale e la "chiacchierata"... eww, rabbrividisco al solo pensiero", commenta con una smorfia dall'effetto comico. "Ma posso ringraziare di molte cose la mia interessantissima nipote, Beth. Credo che mio fratello e la mia meravigliosa cognata non avrebbero potuto renderla un esemplare Anderson al femminile più perfetto neppure se l'avessero programmata in laboratorio", commenta ridendo. " Mio marito ed io ci siamo sempre prestati volentieri a ospitarla a casa nostra e permetterle di organizzare qualche pigiama party o serate tra ragazze con trucco, parrucco, pulizie del viso, ciance sui ragazzi e via dicendo. Inoltre le sono grato perché è la dimostrazione vivente che anche con un paio di tette e la voce femminile, sarei stato davvero un bell'esemplare di interesse", aggiunge con aria più scherzosa.

L'ultima parte della nostra intervista verte nuovamente sul fronte professionale e gli chiedo se abbia già in mente qualche artista da corteggiare per l'esordio della sua etichetta. La risposta è repentina, come se una parte di sé l'avesse sempre saputo, da quando il progetto della casa discografica ha avuto il via. "Il mio spietato corteggiamento non è ancora in atto. Ho sondato indirettamente il terreno parlando con la sua manager e, a titolo informale, con la sua famiglia durante le vacanze estive, ma non tarderò la mia chiacchierata con la Mini Berry”.  Stella St. James, così scherzosamente appellata, ex membro delle Fifth Harmony è figlia della nota cantante di Broadway ed ex collega di Anderson Harris in Glee, Rachel Berry. “Intendo metterle sul piatto la mia proposta e chiarire fin da subito quali sono i miei suggerimenti per il suo primo album e i progetti di lungo periodo per la mia etichetta cui potremmo collaborare. Spero che le mie idee possano collimare con le sue e viceversa. Sono molto curioso di leggere le bozze che sta preparando in via non ufficiale. Sono pronto a offrirle la mia esperienza, la mia fiducia e il mio supporto, i miei studi di registrazione, i migliori collaboratori sulla piazza e sono pronto a conoscere e confrontarmi con le sue idee per garantirle un preludio molto, molto interessante nella sua carriera da solista e cantautrice". 

Non posso fare a meno a quel punto, soprattutto alla luce delle ultime pagine di cronaca rosa che l'hanno riguardata da vicino, di chiedergli provocatoriamente se questa decisione sia legata ai risvolti della relazione con il primogenito e se non teme che ciò possa creare un conflitto di interesse.  Ancora una volta spazza via ogni mia possibile obiezione con il suo parlare diretto e conciso, dimostrando anche di conoscere profondamente la giovane artista. "Stronz***. Conosco la MIni Berry praticamente dal giorno in cui è stata concepita [risata] e posso garantirvi che la sua nascita è la congiunzione di due talenti sopraffini: ha la presenza scenica e la passione di sua madre e l'ispirazione di suo padre. Era ora che si decidesse a fare questo passo verso la sua carriera da solista. Ho avuto modo di testare personalmente il suo talento ai tempi di Anastasia [musical liceale al quale la St. James partecipò nei panni della protagonista accanto a Darren Harris Anderson] quando ancora la sua voce non aveva raggiunto l'estensione vocale odierna. Offrii a mio figlio Darren e a lei il mio studio di registrazione per potersi concentrare al meglio e un giorno le chiesi di cantare un brano che avevo scritto per un film che sarebbe uscito nelle sale cinematografiche da lì ad un anno. Non dimenticai quella performance, credetemi. Certo, aveva ancora del lavoro da fare e non parlo soltanto della sua voce, perché, come le dissi allora, aveva letteralmente bisogno di sverginarsi. Musicalmente parlando ovviamente. Non vorrei ricevere una denuncia da sua madre prima della fine dell'intervista [risata]. L'ingresso nel gruppo delle 5H è stata una svolta importante che le ha permesso di crescere, acquisire maggiore sicurezza e scioltezza di fronte a un pubblico, ma non ho potuto che sentirmi sollevato, quando ha deciso di intraprendere la carriera da solista per dare voce alle sue idee e ai suoi sentimenti. Per molti lasciare un gruppo così noto e acclamato è stato un rischio, una follia e una mossa poco saggia. Io credo sia solo l'inizio della sua vera carriera". 

Quando gli chiedo di parlarci della sua reazione al singolo della St. James, non può che reagire con la consueta energia. "Caz**. Probably annoying? My 1st grade teach was a racist POS, my 2nd-4th grade teachers always got to a point where they would sigh because I got my work done so quickly and then I would ask for more or would read. My 5th teacher was my favorite, he would probably has described me as a diamond in the rough and a budding author. He's the one who made me realize my writing was good and helped me grow.

99 Perspectives on a Single Love Story #14

A/N: The Story of Kurt and Blaine told through the eyes of everyone else but them. Each chapter is a different perspective in the ongoing tale of their love story.

I started something like this a while back - and now I’m taking the idea and really running with it. Each chapter is a ficlet of a different character at a different point in Kurt and Blaine’s life - documenting their love story. This starts in Audition, and each chapter will be paired with a different episode until reaching Dreams Come True.

Rachel Berry (Blame It On The Alcohol) 

They leave the theater arm in arm, each with a giddiness in their step.  That had been a good movie. This had been a nice night.  And as Rachel Berry snuggles into Blaine Anderson - who is admittedly, a little shorter than she prefers but still smells nicely and is a classy, old-fashioned type of guy that understands romance in a way that most Neanderthals her age can’t comprehend - she can’t help but think Love Story had been the perfect movie for them to see.  What other than a dramatic, tear-jerker of a movie that understands the depth and pain true love must endure, and seeing it for the first time with her first time date, who might be a potential lover and legitimate duet partner? 

“Kurt would love this movie,” Blaine says, as they head out into the parking lot.  “He’s a big softie, you know? We watched Moulin Rouge last week and he was bawling.  Admittedly, I was bawling, too, I mean who can resist a downtrodden Ewan McGregor? Anyway - Kurt’s a huge romantic. It’s why we’re good friends, and I think maybe we should come back to see this together, because there aren’t really that many people who can appreciate how romantic it is?  But I know he will.” 

“Oh, it is so romantic,” Rachel echoes.  Blaine has brought up Kurt, like, fifteen times and she’s determined to ignore every last one mention of him.  “Finn, on the other hand, doesn’t get romance.  He thinks Die Hard is a romantic film.  Die. Hard.  And a great Christmas film.  He does not understand good cinema.” 

“Well…” 

“And last year, when we started dating, he thought Scott Pilgrim vs The World was a good choice for a first date film,” Rachel continues, indignant.  “The only thing that I really got out of that was that I imagined what it would be like if he had to fight off all my ex-boyfriends.  Not that I have many, but it’s the concept that counts.  And I wouldn’t worry, Blaine, I think your low center of gravity would count in your favor if Finn ever came after you.” 

“Wait, what…?” 

“Oh, I wouldn’t worry about it,” Rachel says, off-handedly.  “Really, I think it would be far more interesting and far less violent if you dueled over me in musical form.” 

“Okay…” 

They come to Blaine’s car, and they turn towards each other.  She waits, and waits; and for a moment, she thinks that this is the moment - the empty parking lot, the cool breeze, the heroine with her dashing love-interest, just waiting for that first kiss - that first real kiss that could cement that this isn’t just a drunken fever dream, but that Blaine is an actual, potential partner for her.  And as they stare into each other’s eyes, Rachel gleefully thinks about how grateful she is that Blaine had decided to explore his sexuality with her.  Girls are a viable option, too, now, and this only has benefits for her.  They could continue dating, of course, and they would become the it-couple at school, and, sure, some people might think they’re related because they have similar, ambitious attitudes and perfect, dark hair, but the truth is that they’re both very talented, and combined they would be able to outshine any competition at Nationals.  Meanwhile, they could get married and have (vaguely) ethnic babies and take Broadway by storm, clearly, and Blaine could watch the children as she stars in her Tony-winning performance The Lonely Berry - a self-proclaimed (semi)-autobiographical musical starring her about her torrent childhood, and how having two gays dads has been both a blessing and a curse, and of course her dads would be played by Jewish-Neil Patrick Harris and Black-David Burtka and everyone would love her for her genius abilities; and of course Finn would come and completely be jealous of her new, classy life and her posh, dreamy husband and would rue the day he thought sleeping with Santana had been a good idea, or getting back together with Quinn, or dumping her because she made a stupid choice and it isn’t like Puck is a good kisser anyway, gross, anyway, he would see how he’d be missing on one of the greatest stars the world had ever known and… 

“Rachel?” Blaine’s looking at her confused. 

“Yes, sorry, just lost in my inner monologue.” 

“Oh, yeah, Kurt says that happens to him, too…” Blaine unlocks the car door, and opens it for her. 

Ah, well, no kiss tonight.  Maybe he’s just being a gentleman and saving that for date two.

1 - Theo Raeken [Teen Wolf] [Show]

When I first watched season six, this bitch squirmed his way into my heart. And - unfortunately - he doesn't seem to be leaving anytime soon. But seriously, I love Theo so much and his spot at number one is the only one I'd be confident in the placement of.

2 - Kurt Hummel [Glee] [Show]

Aimee is so God darn lovable. She's just so sweet and pure: the ultimate comfort character. I'm not sure what it is that makes her stand out to me above the rest, but she surely does and always has.

5 - Alex Standall [13 Reasons Why] [Show]

When I started the show, not long after season 1 was released, I really related to aspects of Alex's character. So, despite 13rw plummeting to it's inevitable downfall like a race, I'll always have a special place in my heart for Alex.

Emergency

Summary: Rachel goes into labour while Kurt and Jesse are at rehearsal.

Written for the 2019 Klaine Advent prompt: emergency, and the fifth @gleepotluckbigbang prompt: gift-giving!

“Pick up, pick up, pick up!” Blaine muttered increasingly louder.

The phone went to voicemail for the fourteenth time. He groaned loudly in frustration.

“Try Kurt again.” Rachel said from where she sat next to him. 

He did. As with the last ten times, it also went to voicemail. Blaine resisted the urge to throw his cell phone across the room, but only just barely.

“I am going to kill our husbands!” he said to her.

He checked his phone again. Neither Kurt nor Jesse had read any of the increasingly frantic messages he’d sent them on literally any and every app he could possibly think of.

“Okay, Blaine, I do not need this right now. I’m supposed to be the only one freaking out here.” Rachel said, then hissed, clutching her belly.

Blaine immediately crouched down beside her, his hands hovering just above her belly. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m just really stressed right now.”

Rachel exhaled shakily. “I can relate.”

“What do you need, is there anything I can do, something I can get?” he asked, feeling more helpless than he had in awhile.

“You can get our husbands here so that I can murder them for turning both their phones off the month I’m supposed to go into labour!” Rachel gasped out, breathing heavily.

Right then, a nurse came in the room to check how dilated Rachel was, and Blaine stepped out. He paced up and down the hallway, clenching and unclenching his hands. He felt his breathing speed up.

This is not the time, he thought. Deep breath. In through the nose, hold it in. Out through the mouth. Again.

He checked the time. Twelve-thirty. Rehearsal must be ending right now, although they always keep them longer.

Suddenly, a thought entered his mind. The front desk should be opening soon. He googles the number and presses the call button.

The phone rings. He hopes against hope and dares not take a breath.

Someone picks up.

“Rogers Theater, how--”

He cuts the woman off. “Hi, hello, my name is Blaine Anderson-Hummel, and I need you to inform two of your performers that are in rehearsal right now, Kurt Anderson-Hummel and Jesse St. James, that there’s an emergency and they need to check their phones.” he said, all in one breath.

“Uh, ok-okay. I will get right on that.” the woman said, clearly caught off guard.

“Thank you.” he said, and hang up the phone without a second thought.

The nurse came out of the room and he smiled at her gratefully, then walked back in.

“Any luck?” Rachel said, face screwed up in pain.

“Kinda? I called the theater and told them to tell--”

His phone rang. It was Kurt. He briefly considered declining the call, just so that he can torture them the same way they turtured him and Rachel, but immediately dismissed it and picked up.

“Oh my god, I am so sorry.” Kurt’s voice came in barely a second later.

“How’s Rachel?” Jesse’s voice followed suit.

“Well, she’s in labour.”

“Put us on speakerphone.” Jesse said.

“Put them on speakerphone so I can hear.” Rachel said at the same time.

Blaine did.

“Okay, you’re on speakerphone.” he said.

“I’m so sorry, baby, we’re on our way, we’ll be there soon, how are you feeling?” Jesse’s voice sounded, more soft than Blaine had ever heard it before.

He could see Rachel’s face soften, but then her expression morphed back into the one it was before.

“I am feeling a lot of pain. And when you get here, I will kill you with my own bare hands, labour or no labour!”

“I know, I know, I’m sorry, the director threatened to fire us if we didn’t turn our phones off, even after we explained the situation.” Jesse sounded angrier than Rachel.

“Just get here soon.” Rachel said, expression changing from angry to pain-ridden. 

“We will, we will, we’re ten minutes out.” Kurt chimed in.

After the longest ten minutes of his entire goddamn life, a harried looking Kurt and Jesse came barreling through the door, Kurt falling into his arms, and Jesse immediately running to sit at the end of the bed, taking her hand in between both of his.

“Oh my god, we’re gonna be parents.” Kurt whispered breathlessly to his ear.

“I should kill you for turning off your phone less than four weeks to the due date.” Blaine responded, equally breathless. 

Both of them stood a little off to the side, Kurt hugging Blaine from behind, watching Jesse whisper talk to Rachel in a low voice, occasionally bringing his hand up and caressing her hair.

“If it makes you feel better, we may not have jobs to return to after this.”

“What?” Blaine turned to look at him properly.

“After the attendant told us to check our phones and we saw that Rachel was in labour, Jesse cursed the director out so loudly I’m surprised we weren’t fired on the spot. We ran out of there pretty quickly, so she may just not have had the time to do it.” Kurt said and shrugged.

The nurse came in to check how dilated Rachel was again, and Kurt and Blaine waited outside. They were surprised to see that the nurse walked out with Rachel in tow, on her bed. They rushed beside the gurney.

“She’s at ten centimeters, it’s time.” the nurse said, smiling.

“Wish me luck, guys.” Rachel said, visibly overwhelmed.

“If anything happens to you, I will kill you, do you hear me?” Kurt said to her.

Rachel just nodded, her eyes bright. Kurt leaned over the railing and hugged her. Blaine grabbed her hand and brought it to his mouth and kissed it firmly before letting go.

“Good luck,” he said.

They watched, holding hands, as Rachel was led away.

A couple of hours later, they walked hand in hand into another brightly lit room.

“Hey,” Blaine said, “How are you, Superwoman?” 

Rachel smiled tiredly up at him. She was covered in sweat, and could barely lift her head from the pillow. But she still smirked up at him and said “And I thought doing eight shows a week was hard.”

They all laughed. Jesse kissed her forehead. Blaine and Kurt turned their attention to the small human they had yet to acknowledge.

They approached the baby cautiously and quietly, seeing that it was sleeping.

“Oh my god, Rachel, this entire thing came out of you.” Kurt said, a look of genuine shock across his face.

Rachel snorted. “I’m well aware.”

“He’s perfect.” Kurt continued, awed. He extended a finger out and gently caressed the baby’s head.

“He is, oh my god, Rachel, he’s perfect.” Blaine echoed.

“Considering it’s December, does this mean that I don’t have to get you a Christmas present?” Rachel asked.

“Oh, Rachel, this is the best gift ever, you never have to get us anything ever again.” Kurt said, tears filling his eyes.

They went over to the bed. Rachel smiled at them, hand still sandwiched in between both of Jesse’s.

“I love you guys.” she said.

“We love you too.”

1. What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get?

Harry Potter: Dramione. I’m aware they basically Drarry but heterosexual, but they nonetheless rub me the wrong way, and I feel like so many of the fics involving them have Draco using literal slurs! Also, Harmony because they work really well as friends. They moment when they dance to O Children by Nick Cave is such a pure friendship moment.

Glee: Brittana. Brittany was the equivalent of a child, so it just always felt very weird to me. I feel like they wanted her to be quirky, but she just came across as stuck at six years old, and yikes.

Riverdale: Barchie. I’m sorry. I just find them really boring. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Marvel: Stony. This is mostly because I can't see past Stucky. But I also I just feel like I cannot picture Tony Stark as bisexual or queer or anything other than straight. I know this is controversial, but I just can’t.  🙈

The L Word: Shane and Carmen. Listen, I know this is queer woman blasphemy. But the writers wrote Shane so that she’s just a chronic cheater, and it feels impossible to get past that. She treated Carmen awfully. Plus, Sarah Shahi is great, but it was painful to watch her try to be Mexican.

2. Are there any popular fandom OTPs you only BroTP?

Nuna (Luna/Neville): Listen, I love them so much as friends, but they just don’t vibe as a couple. They’re the perfect examples of outcasts finding each other and bonding.

5. Has fandom ever ruined a pairing for you?

You probably were wondering why Klaine wasn’t up above. Well, it’s here. The show ruined them too, of course, starting in season three. But I used to love Klaine in season two! The first three Glee fics I wrote were Klaine, and I think to date my longest Glee fic is an abandoned Klaine fic (~70K).

But I have never seen any other fandom fight over ships the way that Glee did. It was just stressful, and it made me turned off to the ship and the show.

11. Is there an unpopular character you like that the fandom doesn’t? Why?

Harry Potter: Lavender Brown and Cho Chang. Of course, the writing with Cho is racist—of course. I want to acknowledge that and not minimize it as a valid reason to be frustrated with her character. However, I feel like both of them (and Ginny to a lesser extent) are hated because they’re women and love interests.

Buffy: Dawn Summers. I actually really related to her growing up, and I felt like she’s a good portrayal of a younger girl who goes through a lot of trauma and needs to adapt. She’s funny, and she just gets slammed for getting herself into trouble and needing attention, but frankly with her life, she turned out remarkably okay. I also have a million problems with Xander, and I refuse to acknowledge that they get together in the comics, but I really appreciated (in an older brother sort of way!) the moment in the last season when he bonds with her over feeling helpless.

Buffy (again): Riley Finn. This may be my most controversial take. Listen, I don’t love him. And I think he wasn’t the right match for Buffy, and he definitely has issues he needs to work through. But considering that one of her boyfriends was a horrifying stalker and the other big ship was ruined by a really bad writing choice involving attempted rape, Riley gets more shit than he deserves. He also was super manipulated by his professor, and that clearly messed him up. When you see him with his wife later on, he seems to have gotten the therapy he needed and be much healthier. 

Mad Men: Pete and Betty. Neither are good people, but you know what, they're really fucking fun as characters. Also, Betty deserved so much better than she got.

Friday Night Lights: Julie Taylor. Okay, she definitely had her moments where I got frustrated with her. But much like Dawn, she's just a teenage girl, and a lot of the hate definitely stems from that.

19. What is the one thing you hate most about your fandom?

Broadly, I feel like there’s a push toward sanitized art that frustrates me. I don’t think that a piece of art needs to let you know that something is “bad” when they depict it. I think art can show something that’s morally reprehensible and not have it be explicitly condemned without condoning it.

There certainly is art that shows bad things and condones it, but I don’t think that it’s a given with every piece of art.

I’m especially seeing a weird wave of artists getting cancelled for dealing with AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL topics in complicated ways. There was a whole wave of comics people who wrote autobiographical graphic novels dealing with CSA, incest, and other topics, and they were told they were basically evil for depicting it and that by drawing the art, it made... them... pedophiles?

Listen, it’s just... let people deal with their traumas in complicated ways. Understand that just because a show or a book or a comic doesn’t explicitly have another character say, “Why, this is evil!” that the creator doesn’t necessarily agree with it.

There’s plenty of good art that gives you a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach without telling you that you should feel that way. Trust that it’s intentional. Approach art in good faith.

22. Popular character you hate?

Glee: Blaine Anderson. In my rewatch two or three years ago, I will say that I didn’t hate him, just disliked him. I think fandom amplified my feelings while I was watching, but I certainly still found him annoying. Sorry to all my followers who like him!

Angel: Fred Burkle. She was a nerdy boy's wet dream, and she never felt like a character to me. It felt like a weird wish fulfillment fantasy on Whedon's part to have her end up with Wesley (before dying of course). I love Amy Acker and think she did what she could with the role, but I think there was no salvaging the character. Everything from her voice to the way she held herself felt like the vague outline of a shy, nerdy girl who every incel nerd jerks off to.

Breaking Bad: Jesse Pinkman. I want to clarify that I'm not in the fandom. I actually didn't like Breaking Bad and thought it's a pretty empty show barring a few episodes and scenes. Everyone found him to be a softie who Walt manipulates, but frankly, I think he's just as shitty of a person as Walt, and I found him so annoying. I think without fail the worst episodes of the show are centered around him (thinking about the episodes where Jesse’s a cartoon version of a depressed person and has a giant party at his house), and it's where it's most clear that their biggest problem with writing was giving any actual soul or depth to their main characters.

SK sold out their 21 shows in 15 cities within minutes of going on sale. And fans already knew before tickets went on sale that D would NOT be performing at any of the venues except for the two at Irving Plaza in NYC. I’d say within the SK fandom D didn’t even seem to be the most popular -- most of the posts and comments always seemed to be about Joey or Joe W. Criss tweeted that he would join The Space Tour earlier than expected. He plays the Nov. 25 House of Blues concerts at 2 PM and 8 PM as well as the previously announced Nov. 26 New York City concerts, held at noon and 5 PM at Irving Plaza.

An additional NYC performance has been added Nov. 27 at 4 PM at the Gramercy Theatre, but Criss is not confirmed to appear. The Gregory Brothers (Auto-Tune the News) will be the special guests.

1. Katsuki Bakugo and Eijiro Kirishima, My Hero Academia - I literally can’t watch Season 4 until it’s finished because my heart will Explode if I’m left on a cliffhanger involving these too!!! (Unbreakable T.T <3) I don’t usually like animes but I fell in love with his trash bastard and his soft rock boyfriend by the villain’s attack in S1. It all started when I got a TikTok because a Very Hot Bakugo cosplayer was on there. (Literally, their rendition of Bakugo is just, umph. They have appeared in my dream.). As she got more popular he started cosplaying more of Class 1-A of MHA, and I kept wondering?? What the fuck is this anime about?? Why is there an alien girl?? I soon gave in and watched the show to gain context to this thirst trap. I have so many feels for these boys, even though I don’t post on them much here, and T.T

2. Alec Lightwood and Magnus Bane, Shadowhunters - I literally almost wrote my thesis because of this ship. I got into Shadowhunters because I was depressed in a foreign, racist country where I couldn’t go outside alone because old white men would corner me on the street, and everyone was talking about how Mike from Glee was kissing a guy at a wedding? Instead of partying during my study abroad trip, I gobbled down Malec content. And like who wouldn’t?? Harry Shum Jr. was playing a bisexual warlock?? And he had lines and a main character role??? An interracial couple where the characters are both POC?? Sign me up! But then I quickly fell in love with awkward gayby Alec and immediately knew how it felt to be in his shoes. (Disclaimer: I still haven’t finished the show because I don’t want their story to end, but just seeing their wedding scene????? Tears!!!!!!!!!! Both wedding scenes! I-) I just love how soft they look at each as they realize how lucky they are to be able to fall in love against the odds. T.T They deserve the world and all the warlock and shadowhunter babies and T.T This is just going to devolve into me crying so-

3. Stiles Stilinski and Derek Hale, Teen Wolf - I got into Teen Wolf to escape the hellfire that had become the Glee fandom around S3-S4. (Tbh it might have been Dereklei’s constant Sterek content on my dash that led me to give in.) Stiles was bi (through subtext) and definitely turned on by an older werewolf. What more could a depressed Gleek ask for? And listen - now looking back, Sterek is definitely gay Twilight - if Bella was snarkier, had a mental illness, and also a personality. Sterek was the ship to get me back into writing fanfiction and where I could read paranormal characters working through PTSD, ADHD, and other mental illnesses while fighting monsters and having unrealistic sex! I also love those future fics where Beacon Hills isn’t a Hellmouth anymore, and everyone’s alive and just living as one big found family. Truly, Derek deserves the world and I love him so much, and Stiles definitely agrees.

4. Louis Tomlinson and Harry Styles, One Direction - If it’s a surprise that I’m a dark larrie, please read my bio. HL made me believe that love is real and exists and can last for years. I got into One Direction in 2011 through a Lilo fanfic, but as soon as I watched the Video Diaries,,,we knew. Louis has saved my life in ways I can’t describe and the songs that they’ve written for each other through their tough times are so inspiring to listen and dance to. Seeing how they’ve been dragged apart by management, Sony Entertainment, and the whole music industry as a whole even though they exist in glass closets is very disheartening to see. But their resilience that they show through their art (Only the Brave, Sweet Creature, If I Could Fly, and like so many others) is always there. If you want to fall in this rabbit hole, look at freddieismyqueen on YT and come inside lol. Larry is real.

5. Kurt Hummel and Blaine Anderson, Glee - the ship that got me on Tumblr! I didn’t start watching Glee until the summer before S2 came out. My whole choir was into it and I didn’t want to be “mainstream”, but Kurt was the first openly gay teen character that I saw on TV. When I heard a character played by Darren Criss, a musical theater YT legend from AVPM, I had to watch it. I ended up binging the first season with those Netflix DVDs during summer break (yeah remember when Netflix wasn’t streaming? lol). I watched every episode of that god-forsaken show the night of (or night after illegally, hidden from my parents) for that ship, and then me and my best friend would rant about it for the whole week: rinse and repeat. The episode they got together made me scream and I definitely put those Glee Rewind songs in my iPhone. (Fun fact: I used to cry at night because I wished someone like Kurt could love me like that because I heavily related to Blaine and his whole situation). I naturally stopped watching Glee the moment they broke them up and I’m still mad at their hasty attempt to marry them out of nowhere with no well-written getting together / make-up arc other than Jigsaw?? and a barn wedding?? As if Hummel would. What a trash fire. But dang, Glee fanfics have some of the dirtiest, kinkiest, forbidden fics out there. If you were ever on Glee_Kink_Meme on LJ, you know.

6. Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy, Harry Potter - the ship that started it all, the big kahuna, the ultimate enemies to lovers for 90s kids. Drarry got me into the fandom world in middle school, where I basically lived on FFN and LJ while pretending to do my homework. I used to get ready every day by watching the same playlist of “The best Harry Potter videos on Youtube!” (curated by Ariel333Lindt, who was the only queer person I knew but lived in Eastern Europe, where I could see two gay people kiss and fall in love in the safety of my room through badly photoshopped videos. Please check out that playlist). I just love how each fic is a microcosm where they have to construct how magical systems work, the backstories of pureblood families, creatures, or just wizarding culture for the end goal of having Drarry fuck and fall in love! I love redemption arcs that take 200k to achieve, I love dark!Harry takes, and every single different damn take on Narcissa, Pansy, and Millicent - because deep down that’s the writer trying to come to turns on whether or not Draco should be redeemed to get together with Harry. (I mean we all know they’re obsessed with each other, book 6 anyone?) I feel like Drarry fics have the best worldbuilding and characterizations of these characters, and I just love those moments when Draco and Harry take a moment to take a breath together and realize how far they’ve come. No one else can understand how it felt to be the pariah or the chosen one, they both interacted with Voldemort the most, and they have the most history together. They should have gotten together! But I mean the author’s dead, am I right?

So that was a lot! Those are all the ships that impacted me that I still participate with. They have shaped me for better or worse, and have made me learn more about who I am and what I want (or don’t want) in a relationship. This was the most fun essay I’ve ever written on NyQuil!

What’s your favorite comfort show/movie?:

When I get to that point, I’m usually defensive over Loki, any time anyone in SPN makes UH BAD DECISION, and literally any character people demonize for not being perfect (that’s a general statement but I’m not gonna go in depth with all the characters I defend and which ones I exclude)

Show you fell out of love with?:

I fell out of love with Glee after Cory died (that’s when I picked up SPN) and I couldn’t ever get back into it. I couldn’t even watch the final season. That, and House, but House because I got into Glee and I have a one track mind.

it’s weird because this whole thing has been fandom esque and so now i’m confused with this question BUT i guess if we’re talking show asthetics I’m an 80′s, stephen king like, dark usually night time, neon lights, kind of person. which explains my love for spn and stranger things and my brief fling with the x-files.

The actor Darren Criss is notable for the number of gay roles he has taken on. His most known roles include Andrew Cunanan in American Crime Story and Blaine Anderson from Glee.

Recently, he has decided against taking up gay roles, to respect gay actors who should receive those roles. That article later assesses the fact that “in total, 52 straight people have been Oscar-nominated for playing gay characters.” The more straight allies in the acting community advocating for gay actors, the greater the progress will be. The article “Broke(n)back Faggots - Hollywood Gives Queers a Hobson’s Choice,” by W. C. Harris states “Being out or being visible (arguably quite different) does not obviate the fact that many queers cannot see a place in the culture, in the republic, where they’re unequivocally brooked.” This relates to the fact that queer actors still do not achieve the roles they want, as there is still a disregard for real representation
