There are many web hosting companies to choose from if you're taking the plunge into making your own website with a comic content management system (CMS) like ComicControl or Grawlix, a Wordpress comic theme like Toocheke or ComicPress, or a HTML template to cut/paste code like Rarebit. While these solutions are generally free, finding a home for them is... generally not. It can be hard to choose what's best for your webcomic AND your budget!
We took a look at a few of the top hosting services used by webcomics creators using webcomic CMSes, and we put out a poll to ask your feedback about your hosts!
This post may be updated as time goes on as new services enter the hosting arena, or other important updates come to light.
Questions:
💻 I can get a free account with Wix/Squarespace/Carrd, could I just use those for my comic? - Web hosts like this may have gallery functions that could be adapted to display a series of pages, but they are very basic and not intended for webcomics.
📚 Wait, I host on Webtoon, Tapas, Comic Fury, or some other comic website, why are they not here? - Those are comic platforms! We'll get into those in a future post!
🕵️‍♀️Why does it say "shared hosting"? Who am I sharing with? - "Shared hosting" refers to sharing the server space with other customers. They will not have access to your files or anything, so it is perfectly fine to use for most comic CMSes. You may experience slowing if there is too much activity on a server, so if you're planning to host large files or more than 10 comics, you may want to upgrade to a more robust plan in the future.
Web Host List
Neocities
Tumblr media
Basic plan pricing: Free or $5/month. Free plan has more restrictions (1 GB space, no custom domain, and slower bandwidth, among other things)
Notes: Neocities does not have database support for paid or free accounts, and most comic CMS solutions require this (ComicCtrl, Grawlix, Wordpress). You will need to work with HTML/CSS files directly to make a website and post each page.
Hostinger
Tumblr media
Basic plan pricing: $11.99/month or $7.99/month with four year commitment (monthly, 1, 2, and 4 year plans available).
Notes: Free domain for the 1st year. Free SSL Certifications. Weekly backups.
KnownHost
Tumblr media
Basic plan pricing: $8.95/month or $7.99/month with four year commitment (monthly, 1, 2, and 4 year plans available).
Notes: Free DDOS protection. Free SSL Certifications.
InMotion Hosting
Tumblr media
Basic plan pricing: $12.99/month or $9.99/month with three year commitment (monthly, 1, and 3 year plans available).
Notes:  Free SSL Certifications, free domain names for 1 and 3 year plans. 24/7 live customer service and 90-day money-back guarantee. Inmotion also advertises eco-friendly policies: We are the first-ever Green Data Center in Los Angeles. We cut cooling costs by nearly 70 percent and reduce our carbon output by more than 2,000 tons per year.
Reviews:
👍“I can't remember it ever going down.”
👍“InMotion has a pretty extensive library full of various guides on setting up and managing websites, servers, domains, etc. Customer service is also fairly quick on responding to inquiries.” 👎“I wish it was a bit faster with loading pages.”
Ionos Hosting
Tumblr media
Basic plan pricing: $8/month or $6/month with three year commitment (monthly, 1, 2 and 3 year plans available).
Notes: Free domain for the first year, free SSL Certification, Daily backup and recovery is included. Site Scan and Repair is free for the first 30 days and then is $6/month.
Reviews:
👍“Very fast and simple” 👎“Customer service is mediocre and I can't upload large files”
Bluehost
Tumblr media
Basic plan pricing: $15.99/month or $4.95/month with three year commitment (monthly, 1, 3 year plans available).
Notes: Free domain and SSL certificates (for first year only). 24/7 Customer Service. Built to handle higher traffic websites. Although they specialize in Wordpress websites and provide updates automatically, that's almost a bad thing for webcomic plugins because they will often break your site. Their cloud hosting services are currently in early access with not much additional information available.
Reviews:
👎"The fees keep going up. Like I could drop $100 to cover a whole year, but now I'm paying nearly $100 for just three months. It's really upsetting."
👎"I have previously used Bluehost’s Wordpress hosting service and have had negative experiences with the service, so please consider with a grain of salt. I can confirm at least that their 24/7 customer service was great, although needed FAR too often."
Dreamhost
Tumblr media
Basic plan pricing: $7.99/month or $5.99/month with three year commitment (monthly, 1, 3 year plans available).
Notes: Free SSL Certificates, 24/7 support with all plans, 97-day moneyback guarantee. Not recommended for ComicCtrl CMS
Reviews:
👍“They've automatically patched 2 security holes I created/allowed by mistake.” 👍“Prices are very reasonable” 👎 “back end kind of annoying to use” 👎 “wordpress has some issues” 👎 “it's not as customizable as some might want“
GoDaddy
Tumblr media
Basic plan pricing: $11.99/month or $9.99/month with three year commitment (monthly, 1, 2, and 3 year plans available).
Notes: Free 24/7 Customer service with all plans, Free SSL Certificates for 1 year, free domain and site migration.
Reviews:
👍Reasonable intro prices for their Economy hosting, which has 25GB of storage 👍Migrated email hosting service from cPanel to Microsoft Office, which has greater support but may not be useful for most webcomic creators. 👎 Many site issues and then being upsold during customer service attempts. 👎 Server quality found lacking in reviews 👎 Marketing scandals in the past with a reputation for making ads in poor taste. Have been attempting to clean up that image in recent years. 👎 “GoDaddy is the McDonald's of web hosting. Maybe the Wal-Mart of hosting would be better. If your website was an object you would need a shelf to put it on. You go to Wal-Mart and buy a shelf. It's not great. It's not fancy. It can only hold that one thing. And if we're being honest - if the shelf broke and your website died it wouldn't be the end of the world. The issue comes when you don't realize GoDaddy is the Wal-Mart of hosting. You go and try to do things you could do with a quality shelf. Like, move it. Or add more things to it.” MyWorkAccountThisIs on Reddit*
Things to consider for any host:
💸 Introductory/promotional pricing - Many hosting companies offer free or inexpensive deals to get you in the door, and then raise the cost for these features after the first year or when you renew. The prices in this post are the base prices that you can expect to pay after the promotional prices end, but may get outdated, so you are encouraged to do your own research as well.
💻 Wordpress hosting - Many of the companies below will have a separate offering for Wordpress-optimized hosting that will keep you updated with the latest Wordpress releases. This is usually not necessary for webcomic creators, and can be the source of many site-breaking headaches when comic plugins have not caught up to the latest Wordpress releases.
Any basic hosting plan on this list will be fine with Wordpress, but expect to stop or revert Wordpress versions if you go with this as your CMS.
🤝 You don't have to go it alone - While free hosts may be more limited, paid hosting on a web server will generally allow you to create different subdomains, or attach additional purchased domains to any folders you make. If you have other comic-making friends you know and trust, you can share your server space and split the cost!
Want to share your experience?
Feel free to contribute your hosting pros, cons, and quirks on our survey! We will be updating our list periodically with your feedback!

Tumblr media
TIMELINE
All Deadlines are “by end of day” (EOD) in any timezone.
July 14: Nonzero Word Count Soft Check-In Due July 31: Pitches Due August 1-September 15: Interview Scheduling OR Questionnaire Submissions Window August 8: Writer 7500 Word Cut Off Due August 14: All Teams Formed & Connected September 15: Artist & Writer Check In Due October 31: All Works Due November 1: Tumblr Promos Begin, 1 team/day
There will be a 2025 DA Big Bang Google Calendar that you can add to your own calendar - link coming soon!
WORK REQUIREMENTS
Writers & Projects Start Anonymous: do not share your ideas publicly. You are not allowed to discuss your project outside of the SECRET writer-only chat in the discord. This is to make the artist pitch claims blind and fair.
Your Final Product: Writers commit to producing a completed, new fanfiction PRIMARILY for the Dragon Age Media of at minimum 25,000 words. This work must be completed and posted to the AO3 collection by October 31, 2025. Writers who fail to reach the minimum will not be included in the Bang Collection, nor advertised by the Bang. This is out of fairness to all writers undertaking this challenge.
Longfics can be anything you like, within our sparing content guidelines! They are not constrained by prompts, DNWs, etc. There is no maximum word count, no limit to the fandom(s) (in case of crossovers), and no restriction on max rating.
Written works must be new:
They cannot be rewrites of existing fanfictions, or compilations of existing fanfictions, or reposts of existing fanfictions, that have been posted on tumblr, AO3, FFN, Livejournal, Wordpress, or other platforms.
Written works must be primarily for the Dragon Age franchise, even for crossovers:
“Geralt of Rivia with Templar Abilities, but still in The Continent, and no Dragon Age characters appear” is probably skirting the line, but “Geralt of Rivia is sent into Thedas” or “Cullen Rutherford as a Witcher in an AU version of Thedas” are probably okay.
Written works must be at least 25,000 words, and complete, when posted:
Works must be uploaded to AO3
Works must be submitted to the 2025 Big Bang collection
Works must be completed (no new chapters or significant revisions to be added)
Writers agree to meeting minimum checkpoint progress, and clearly communicating progress (or lack thereof) to the moderators of the event. These are listed in the Timeline.
DELIVERABLES AND DUE DATES
Sign Ups: June 1-June 30
On the Google Form, open from June 1-June 30, Writers must provide:
▸ contact information ▸ a non-binding 1-5 sentence explanation of their fic idea ▸ an estimated length (25k+) ▸ an estimated Rating ▸ if you wish to be added to the secret writer discord channels
Soft Check-In: July 1-July 14
On the Google Form, open from July 1-July 14, Writers must provide a current, non-zero word count. Any non-zero word count received by July 14 will qualify you to submit a Pitch.
Writer Pitches: July 15-July 31
On the Google Form, open from July 15-July 31, writers will submit their project pitches for Artists to claim. The information will then be anonymized and posted to the DABB 2025 Pitch Collection for Artists to peruse and claim. The mod team will then finalize teams.
Cut-Off Check-In: July 14-August 8
This will be a Google Form. Even if the fic was requested by an artist, we will not match artists with a fic that has not met the minimum 7,500 words by August 8, 2025.
Team Collaboration: August 14-October 31
Upon matching, Writers and Artists will be connected over email. From there, Teams can decide what platform is best for their communication. Please keep in mind our privacy recommendation.
In the event that the event has more artists sign up than writers, all fics will enter a lottery for the chance to receive a second artist match (forming a Team of Three).
Writers must send the latest draft of their writing to their Artist partner(s). It can be any length (7500 words+), and in any condition, but the artist needs something to go off of for their part of the Bang. If an Artist does not receive a draft of the fic after 72 hours, the mods will investigate. If it is found that the Writer has not met target word counts, they will be disqualified from the event and banned from future participation.
Writers should be in regular, private contact with their Artist partner(s). Writers should provide as many written excerpts as the artist (reasonably) requests.
While your partnership is not necessarily anonymous, your work should not be shared/streamed publicly until the whole fic/art combo is posted on your reveal day!
Submissions: October 19-31
Writers must add their work to the AO3 Collection for the 2025 Dragon Age Big Bang when finished, AND, via a Google Form open October 19-31, ONE REPRESENTATIVE from each time must submit material for the Tumblr promo posts. Decide your team representative ahead of time! The full version AND a square crop of the art must be submitted by ONE REPRESENTATIVE OF YOUR TEAM for the final tumblr promotional post. Please read more about image submission, hosting, formatting, and cropping, here.

Webmaster Webring!
Tumblr media
Do YOU have a website of some sort? Any sort? Neocities, nekoweb, github? Hand-coded? Wordpress? A carrd? Maybe a fancy-looking rentry? Do you have a custom tumblr theme that you fancied up to be a little website all on its own?
well, if ANY of those apply, or if you're interested in getting them to, I'd like to invite you to the webmaster webring!!
this is a bit of a follow-up to my post about the many perfectly valid ways to make a website! to quote the about page of the webring:
So many webrings are out there, and it's wonderful getting to surf through them, but the vast majority of them specify that all sites must be hand-coded, and I feel like that simple restriction blocks out a lot more people than we'd like to think. Interesting and creative sites can be made with site-builders, and websites built on pre-made layouts are still websites!! Because of this, I wanted to make a webring that allows sites of all kinds :)
Many people overcomplicate what being a webmaster is, and I've seen a lot of people including owning a domain and hand-coding everything in their definitions. In truth, though, if you're a person who's got a website, you fit the bill!
Tumblr media
I made this webring with the intention of being open to all kinds of sites, whether they're hand-coded, made with site builders, use static site generators, or are based on premade layouts. I want more people to make websites, so I won't turn someone away for making a website.
In addition to being a webring, I also have a page dedicated to resources meant to help people build their own sites! Whether you have a website or not, I'd like to invite you to take a look at the webring regardless. If you have a website of just about ANY kind, you can join, and if you don't, I have resources linked in hopes of helping you change that, if you're interested!
This post is less of me begging you to make a website in whatever way you can, and more just shilling for my webring, but the point still stands that I think everyone should have a website! If you agree, come take a look :D

secret outback steakhouse australia webpages
a helpful message from "david". fun fact: if you post the link to the regular-degular outback steakhouse australia homepage on discord, it will inexplicably preview this page.
Tumblr media
a sample page containing fun stories of a bike messenger by day / aspiring actor by night and a doohickey company, complete with an ignored reminder to delete this page and a mysterious link to the outback steakhouse australia admin login (bonus hidden page)
this page has a bunch of tips for an aspiring wordpress user, but the real party is at the bottom, where a comment section lays waiting. sadly, comments require moderator approval, but friends and i have submitted several anyway. should they remove this restriction, this could become the hottest new social media.
the archives, containing the same post as shown in "david". the fun thing about this page is the url, which shows that pages on this website are organized by page number. as far as i can tell, i have found all pages of note that can be found by searching by page number, but i stopped after i hit 20 (didn't find anything after page 11)
have fun exploring the outback steakhouse australia website, hosted by the very same company as our own tumblr. comment if you find any more hidden pages!

Liberté Perdue
Aloha kākou. Liberté Perdue. Once the government controls the free flow of information, nothing else exists except approved state-run propaganda. When Marxist democrats say President Trump is a threat to democracy, but then restricts free speech upon others, then their definition of free speech comes into question. There are very few social media sites that allow free expression on their…

Howdy! I stumbled across a broken link to your WordPress blog where you mentioned your views on people who believe their religious/spiritual practices exempt them from wildlife laws. I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts, since this is a topic I have a hard time getting through to others about. If you don't have the time (or don't want to), don't sweat it! Have a wonderful day ^-^
@raspberrysquid Well, it's something I've primarily run into in the Pagan/etc. arena. These religions, as a general rule, are recently created, though they may seek to emulate older polytheisms to varying degrees. (There are also polytheist reconstructionists who do not consider themselves under the modern Pagan umbrella for varying reasons, FTR, but that's a whole other discussion I'm not going to get into here. The Venn diagram is complex, and not everyone fits under the Big Tent, so to speak.)
The attitude I seem to run into repeatedly is the idea that Neopagan religions should be on an equal par with indigenous American religions with regards to access to restricted items such as eagle or other migratory bird feathers. For example, Lady Suzy Bunnysnuggles picks up a red-tailed hawk feather that a bird molted, and decides that this must be a sign from [insert deity or other higher power here] that she must incorporate that animal's energy into her spiritual practice somehow, and so she takes it home.
Now, there is absolutely nothing wrong with interpreting an encounter with an animal (or its shed bits) as being personally, spiritually profound. However, if Lady Suzy Bunnysnuggles is--like many of us Pagan folk--an American citizen of varying European origins or otherwise not in a federally enrolled* Native American tribe, she is breaking the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA) which prohibits the possession of almost all native wild bird parts, other than a few exceptions like turkeys. This law is in place because in the latter 19th and early 20th centuries bird populations in North America were being absolutely demolished for both restaurant tables and the feather trade. Since you can't really tell the difference between a feather that was naturally molted, and one that was torn off of a poached bird, the law has a blanket prohibition on possession regardless of origin.
There are some exceptions to the MBTA, and to the Bald and Golden Eagle Act, for federally enrolled people to have access to otherwise prohibited parts for religious or cultural use. However, people like Lady Suzy Bunnysnuggles, when informed of the laws, huff in indignation that they, too, should have religious exemptions, and that they are not, in fact, going to put that feather back where they found it. In fact, they may very well hang it from their rearview mirror or on a ritual staff, in blatant violation of the MBTA, and with the assumption that they will not run across a USFW law enforcement agent or other authority who is familiar with the laws. If pressed, they may claim "Oh, it's a TURKEY feather**!", but they're banking on the idea that no one is actually going to recognize what they have.
My thought on it, as a longtime Pagan of various European descent, is that it's my people who basically screwed up everything for everyone else by coming over here and overhunting species and systematically destroying their habitats. I've been working with hides, bones, and other remains in my practice for over a quarter of a century, and I am totally fine with staying within the confines of various laws. I have plenty of things I can legally work with, AND I am creative and flexible enough to come up with legal alternatives to prohibited items. My traditions are my own, and they don't pre-date me. Indigenous people, on the other hand, have been dealing with over 500 years of physical and cultural genocide, and the previous ban on their possession of eagle feathers and the like is just one more manifestation thereof; reversing that ban and making allowances for feathers/etc. for their spiritual and cultural practices is a TINY piece of trying to undo centuries of damage.
I am not going to try to argue that the erasure of European polytheistic traditions by Christianity many centuries ago affects me in the same way that the ongoing oppression of indigenous Americans affects them. They're not even comparable. Any problems I may have experienced as a relatively out Pagan in the United States are nowhere near in comparison to the immensity of 500+ years of active racism and other violence enacted upon Native American communities by both individuals and governmental entities.
Moreover, if we open exceptions to Neopagans and other followers of modern nature spirituality, then anyone can step up and say "Oh, hey, I'm a Wiccan/Druid/etc., can I have some eagle feathers?" that would then open up a greater demand for otherwise prohibited animal remains, and feed into a still-substantial black market. Therefore, I think it's best if I and Lady Suzy Bunnysnuggles simply find alternative ways to work with the archetypal spirit of Red-Tailed Hawk, rather than argue that our supposed religious oppression is somehow on par of that of indigenous Americans, and use their plight to try to weasel our way out of following a law that is in place to protect wildlife after other white people have demonstrated time and again that they couldn't be trusted to hunt wildlife at a sustainable level. Is it a case of some bad actors ruining things for everyone else? I mean, sure, maybe. But it's one of those things that I've long since made my peace with.
*This is with the understanding that there are also significant problems with federal recognition of some tribes, but not others, and the immense amount of bureaucratic bullshit a group of indigenous people have to wade through just to prove their legitimacy to the BIA.
**I once pointed out to a fellow vendor at an event that some of the feathers on their wares were, in fact, from various species of owl, because the last thing I want is for someone who is simply ignorant of the law to get in trouble, and generally speaking people are pretty cool about removing the illegal bits of their work and grateful that they met me before they met someone who could actually issue a ticket and/or cause trouble for the event runners. This person instead insisted repeatedly, both to me and to event staff, that they were turkey feathers, in such a manner that it was clear they knew what they were but was assuming we all played the "wink wink, nudge nudge, yeah, those sure are TURKEY feathers!" game. Needless to say, they had to take down anything made with owl feathers in order to stay in the vendors' row.

Song of the Year #8
youtube
I don't know! I guess I just love this song and always stop on it when it comes up!
I will actually post the first posts tomorrow! What would have been the delay is I also wanted to try having a wordpress this time too and I thought it would take a few days to set that all up but I remember I set it up last year then just never continued it.
So the cadence of the releases will be a lot like my old posts, daily posts, unless I'm just not around at all then I'll pause the queue but otherwise something should post!
I feel confident that this is the one because it's been just a little bit of a week and I already have a lot! My previous legacy it would take a week just to create a week of content and this one its like it takes a week to have weeks of content. No quality is lost, because the hold up was just the restrictive way I was playing and writing. If anything quality should be gained because I could not play the game at all this week and still have daily posts for over a week. So that means next time I'm in game and want to craft some intricate scene I can do so without feeling like "Oh I need to hurry!!!"
Anyways, tomorrow I'll Introduce Marisol and Sasi!
I think in terms of the day's resolutions, not the years'. ~ Henry Moore

Update on the WordPress thing: WPE included in their most recent filing a meme that Watt Wullenmeg posted (on October 1st, after the inciting incident and well after he should have shut the fuck up) to effectively rebutt a claim AutoWattic made (that third party managed hosting services were not dependent on Wordpress.org, and as such, AutoWattic had not harmed WPE's business by restricting access to Wordpress.org's repository etc.).
Once again, Matt, just keep posting 👍👍👍

Firefish - a twitter alternative
TLDR: Looks like twitter, functions better. Lets you interact across multiple platforms. Allows NSFW. Has built in anti AI scraping.
If you ever used Twitter, it's going to look similar in structure, so the learning curve is low. There's more features that that, but they're not so intrusive you HAVE to learn them right away but also aren't hard to find. It's a nice balance.
The big difference is post length- it allows up to 8000 characters, so like Mini-Tumblr.
one of the features I like that familiar's but better is if you hover cursor over name on desktop is it pops up the profile for the person and a follow button. So you can immediately hover over name and get context about the person posting when it's not someone you already follow. Is this health info being posted by a professional or by someone that thinks you should stick rocks in your vagina?
That feature also means its incredibly easy to follow people regardless of the instance. On Mastodon it was extremely annoying to follow people. If that the thing that put you off Mastodon, Firefish fixed that and made it better than Twitter.
Firefish runs off ActivityPub, so it lets you follow and interact with anyone using the plugins for that. So includes Mastodon, WordPress, PeerTube, Pixelfed, Lemmy, Misskey, and Tumblr is allegedly developing an integration to run it.
Okay, NSFW content! We're about to get slightly in the weeds here. whether NSFW content is allowed is generally by server. When you go to join Firefish, it'll ask you what server you want to use and it'll tell you about rules. If you want NSFW, pick one that allows!
That's it. If you picked one that did not, it generally won't allow you to follow things that do or boost stuff from a location that did.
NOW, A GREAT FEATURE! Spoilering stuff is super easy on Firefish. Just click the button! Say you see something you wanna boost but its *not* spoilered. You can boost AND spoil the image/text of the quoted item! MAGIC.
now, on to antennas.
The Antenna feature on there lets you track tags or users in a separate panel so you can see it in one spot. You can also add NEGATIVE tags to the antenna. So say you want to see news about your city. So you set the main tag as the City. But you don't want sports news. So you can put in negative tags of sports, specific sport names, and individual teams in the city. And then you get news about the location, but no sports
For fandom purposes, you can use it to filter out things you just don't vibe with. hate that one ship? BEGONE.
PROFILES: you can stick hashtags in your profile and it'll turn up in searches easily. also it will ask you "are you a cat?" If you say yes, it gives your profile pic cat ears.
Overall when I'm posting links to Firefish posts (or posts via something from ActivityPub hosted sites that I interacted with via Firefish), so far it renders the preview link well on most platforms. I'm not sure how it works for embedding a whole message into a static page (like you could do with Twitter for news articles).
AN IMPORTANT NERDY NOTE: okay, you wanna sign up for Firefish now. Select from the servers offered some have different rules restrictions and some have Non-english default languages. Pick the one you like. If you pick Firefish.social itself that one IS the largest but also it gets day one code updates... so sometimes it gets funky or won't load properly for a few hours. If that will drive you bonkers, pick *any* other server. The server size is almost irrelevant because Firefish plays so well with other services!
also, if you don't see one today, check again in a few days! admins rotate through open enrollments to keep the growth rate managable. also, if you're *that* kind of nerd, you can host your own server. Even with only YOU on it. and it still interacts normally with the rest of the ActivityPub servers!
