I have a passing knowledge of Jaime Reyes' Blue Beetle from the character's appearance on SMALLVILLE, BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD and these panels.

Milagro, you are so real for this.

And this is where my true knowledge about Blue Beetle comes from - Ted Kord's Blue Beetle and his friendship with Booster Gold.

Blue & Gold Forever.

So with only knowing the bare minimum about Jaime I was able to watch BLUE BEETLE with no expectations. It's an incredibly vibrant, fun and heartfelt film. I'm concerned at its low box-office showing, but films with bigger leads and bigger budgets have also failed at the box office, or at the very least, didn't recoup it's budget and marketing. There has never been anything that was a guaranteed box office success. I would rather it tried to get eyes in theaters than get lost on HBO Max where it was originally slated for release. Here's hoping National Cinema Day on Aug 27th (where theaters are selling tickets for $4 for all formats) will bring more people to the tent.

My thoughts on BLUE BEETLE

Nothing but SPOILERS.

THE GOOD

Xolo Maridueña (COBRA KAI) is a great Jaime. If you have seen Maridueña across these five seasons of COBRA KAI, it's not surprising. He has shown consistently that he can play humour, dutifulness, vulnerable and excel at action.

Big up to COBRA KAI's annual blow-out fight sequence.

Oddly enough, at the end of the film I didn't think we got to know Jaime beyond a cursory level, but I'm sure if they did a deep dive on him I would complain about that too as my issue with origin story films is that so much real estate is given to building up the history of the character, that the plot and action seems relegated to the final act. But I guess BLUE BEETLE gave us all we need to know about Jaime.

Good egg, duty bound, gets hard from hugs (and kudos to this film for actually having a character who gets horny. Comic book films are nearly always a sexless thing, but my guy Jaime pulling his shirt down to cover his crotch after Jenny's (Bruna Marquezine) tale of woe was refreshing.)

-Really liked Jenny Kord. She wasn't the typical damsel in distress. She's formidable in her own right. She and Jaime doesn't feel rushed or shoehorned in. I especially loved the fact that they didn't just make her the love interest,

Though she and Xolo are great together,

but also gave her - in the Reyes - a new family. If she and Jaime were to go pear-shaped we can just know that Jenny still has a place within the Reyes clan.

-We have not one, but two new members to the Legion of Great DCEU Family Members. Joining the mom and dad of SHAZAM, AQUAMAN's dad, THE FLASH's mom is BLUE BEETLE's Alberto Reyes (Damián Alcázar) and Nana Reyes (the Oscar nominated Adriana Barraza).

Still waters run deep and Nana proved that. She's not just up in her room sewing and watching reruns of "María la del Barrio". She is sitting back waiting to showcase her experiene while fighting in the revolution.

And Alberto Reyes! He was this film's King T'Chaka. Always with a wise word, strong, caring. I hate that he had to die and I think it's a worn out trope that a hero has to suffer loss in order to come into their greatness, but it worked. Long Live Alberto Reyes!

Just enough George Lopez to not be annoying. He's funny, but only in small doses IMO so he was just good enough and used well enough that it wasn't eye-rolling. I really loved that he wasn't just there for the obvious comic relief, instead Uncle Rudy is a brain.

The opening along had me hyped. It set the tone and it lent to idea of the scarab being from space, but the inclusion of a classic Blue Beetle comic sketch just ::chef's kiss:

-Director Ángel Manuel Soto listed which stories he pulled from for this film,

but I see a lot of BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD episode "Fall of the Blue Beetle" in the bits where they go to Ted Kord's home/lab.

-The way they took OMAC/Kevin Kho backstory and merged it with Carapex's. In the comics OMAC was a Cambodian child of war, in this film Ignacio/Carapex was left an orphan and trained by the School of the Americas (rebranded Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation) whose training manuals advocated tortuing and blackmailing civilians. Using Kord Industries as not just a amorphous shady big tech corp, BLUE BEETLE's writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer and Soto tied Kord Industries to the realties of what big corporations are doing globally.

This ties into another thing I loved about the film - it had a strong cultural identity. From Nana using Vivaporú (Vicks Vapor Rub) as smelling salts to rouse Jamie, to El Chapulín Colorado(!!!).

The idea of gentrification that affects people across colour lines and specifically targets people of lower income.

The full integration of Jaime and Khaji-Da being exemplified by Khaji-Da (voiced by singer/actor Becky G) speaking Spanish.

THE BAD

-Is there someone with less screen prescence than Susan Sarandon? I don't know how she was ever a thing. I guess they needed a "name" but there several other actors like Anjelica Huston or Sigourney Weaver who would have done something more with that role. Carla Gugino. Anyone else!

-The establishing CGI of Kord Entrerprises was basura. There was a tangible change in F/X as if mid way through post-production they found out WB-Discovery was moving it to theatrical release and they effects crew got a cash infusion.

-While I came around on the character towards the end, I wasn't a fan of Milagro. Glad they aged her up but she fell into the trope of annoying movie sibling and it grated.

THE REST

-Harvey Guillen's character died in the film (good!) and he appears to be dead again on HARLEY QUINN (not good. There is no way Nightwing's death sticks).

-Soto and James Gunn says that Jaime has a future in the DCU. While an interview snippet is making the rounds where Soto says he would like Jason Sudeikis (TED LASSO) to play Ted Kord, I don't really believe that is true as the source is from an online site I'm not familiar with and people lie for clicks.

Yes, Buster. All. The. Time.

-While comics! Jaime lives in El Paso, Texas, film! Jaime lives in Palmera City - on El Paso St. - which was created for the film (and appeared in the comics months ahead in a tie-in). Soto found inspiration in Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico. But I wonder what Palmera City's real-world city will be when James Gunn finishes the DC Map that he say is being redone. Maybe because over the years Metropolis has been Chicago/Delaware/New York.

Metropolis is not in Delaware, GTFOH.

Riv/erdale - Season 1, complete - i need to find a way to stream season 2 but i will continue to watch it / read recaps in the meantime

Got/ham - Season 2, complete - same as riverdale

Jes/sica Jones - Season 1, complete - Eagerly awaiting Season 2!

Dar/edevil - Season 2, complete - it was weaker than S1 but I digged it all the same; will watch S3 (unless they kill a certain person i’m overly attached to. if they do, i will stop)

Iro/n Fist - Season 1, complete - i’m one of the two people i know that actually loved this show and danny

Defe/nders - Season 1, complete - not what i expected but will watch S2 if it came to be

Punis/her - Season 1, Episode 4 - i cannot explain how much this show disturbed me. i will not finish the season and will not watch if there’s a Season 2 (i still ship karen and frank all the same, fyi)

Oh man, just saw this and - 

It’s such a toss-up, really! I love all animated Jaime’s (except maybe the one in the movies currently - I mean I’ll probably love him if I ever watch the movies but he just seems so unlike all other incarnations??) Smallville Jaime Reyes was a dork, and BOY when I watched that episode I could tell that show did not age particularly well...

Anyway, I think my FAVORITE Jaime Reyes is honestly Young Justice’s version. He may be a little (lot) less fun, but his arc is imperative to the entirety of season 2 - you watch this boy become a superhero, and grapple with his apparent future fate. He’s also gentle and kind but still so unsure of himself and I just??? He’s so relatable! And OF COURSE his dedication to Tye makes him THE favorite. He loves Tye so much and would do anything to save him and it makes me wanna squeal any time I think about it.

For other Jaimes - BATB is a great older Jaime, and GOD do I love his episode with Huntress. It is. Amazing. Then JLA Jaime has been nothing but adorable so far, and I can’t wait for him to team-up with Stargirl and Firestorm.

RANT AHEAD.

I am so fucking upset right now. Bordering on angry. Ofc iron fist is getting bad reviews. That’s upsetting enough but what makes it worse is the amount of people I am seeing celebrating it. Just because they cast a white dude as a white dude. Don’t get me wrong, marvel missed an opportunity by not making Danny Asian American but I can also see why they didn’t. Danny being white does play into his character and his relationship with other characters (rich white boy and ex con black man team up is one of those dynamics). Now of course I, as well as most of the people cheering the failure haven’t seen it yet and only the first 6 episodes are open to critics. And if they do actually fuck up Asian representation I will be pissed too. I’m not defending the show exactly. If I don’t like it when I watch it I will be honestly about it. But idk I think it’s just getting to me that people are happy iron fist isn’t good when that’s all Ive wanted for so long. I’ve been waiting for a live action iron fist for years. I was there during the rumors of a movie. There during the push backs when marvel was in a rut. I remember after avengers when marvel said they were going to make a TV series and praying it would be heroes for hire (which it wasn’t sadly). I remember the announcement of marvel and Netflix teaming up. I remember screaming for joy when iron fist was announced as one of the Netflix series. I remember waiting and waiting for the casting announcement. Which took ages. For so long only 3 out of the 4 defenders had actors to go with the characters. I remember all of the backlash about the casting and while being dissapointed I was keeping an open mind as I do with most casting choices. (I still remember everyone hating Andrew Garfield being cast as spiderman and that actually turned out great). And now here I am. Under a week away from getting what I’ve waited years for. I’ve been re-reading comics in my hype, also finally getting around to reading the power man and iron fist comic that started last year. I recently got the new iron fist pop and he’s been on my desk instead of on my pop shelf. I love Danny Rand as a character so much. So fucking much and I am just so tired of being dissapointed by live action adaptions of my favourite superheroes. I’ve watched smallville take everything I love about Jaime Reyes, throw it out the window, step on it and make the character nothing like his comic counterpart. I have to live with whatever the fuck this Hawkeye is. Watch him be bland in the first avengers and watch him get some character in the 2nd movie which wasn’t bad but still not the Hawkeye I fell in love with. I’ve watch iceman over the past 17 years have his character traits taken from him as he became a love interest and nothing more. His immense power completely forgotten. And now it seems I am going to add iron fist to this list. 21 years I have been alive and superheroes have been apart of my life for as long as I can remember. I’m not asking for perfection, hell I fucking enjoyed parts of ultimate spiderman in mt desperation for Iron Fist, I just want to see the characters that have had such a huge impact on my life get decent representation so others can have the opportunity to fall in love with them like I have. Now that I think about it marvel wise I mostly just want avengers earth’s mightiest heroes back. I know it’s not live action and was technically a children’s cartoon but damn son did it get across why I love some of those characters so much. And at least then I had SOMETHING

2 - Is there a ship you didn’t like at first but ultimately started shipping?

OK, get this: Mulder and Scully. No but listen, I started watching The X-Files (which is my all-time favorite show, by the way) when I was about 12, and I didn’t get it. Mulder’s respect, their bond, the way they complemented each other. I just didn’t get it. I was too young. I was like, who needs romance? They’re buddies who chase aliens! But as I got older, and kept watching, not to mention rewatching, I started to realize and appreciate certain things. Slowly but surely, I fell in love with the ship.

18 - Is there a ship the writers have ruined for you?

Abby and Carter on ER. I wasn’t even the biggest fan of that ship, but I supported it because I adored both charaters individually, and the way it ended had me like “……” Also, the writers almost ruined Kevin and Scotty from Brothers & Sisters for me, but that’s one of those shows that fell into an overall downward spiral, so I choose to pretend it ended about 2 years before it was actually cancelled. So I still ship Kevin and Scotty just fine :D

23 - Have you ever started shipping a ship because of the fans?

Mystrade (Mycroft/Lestrade from Sherlock). I didn’t even know that was a ship, but tumblr opened my eyes. As a Barisi fan, especially with S18 being the way it is, I truly relate to the Mystrade fans (the ones I’ve seen, at least). I love how they only get a 2-second interaction every 3 years and they still get excited. I love the self-awareness and the jokes and the joyful denial and the pure enjoyment of something so random :’)

28 - Is there a character you have several ships for?

Everyone lol. I bleed Barisi but I’m open to pretty much all other Sonny and Barba ships (especially Benisi and Barmaro). Also, to speak of a current show and not a show from the 90s, I’m in love with Lucifer and I ship queen Maze with Linda, Chloe and Amenadiel, pretty much equally (though Linda/Maze is my no.1). Also, Clark on Smallville, whom I shipped with both Lex (duh) and Lois. And my queen Dana Scully, whom I shipped with both Mulder and Doggett (man my taste is terrible). Oh I also shipped Doggett/Scully, Doggett/Reyes and Doggett/Skinner! I’m just now realizing that D:
