At Standing Rock 9
roughly 15″ by 21″
soft pastels
This man was nice enough to drive me from the airport to the main camp and for that I am incredibly grateful.
There was a large arrest, of about 100 people, made on October 22, 2016. The local jail was not large enough to hold that many people and so many of those arrested were brought to other jails and detention centers. This left many of the arrested hours away (by car) from where they were seized and from where they were scheduled to appear in court. In many cases, the protectors that were arrested were released from jail and expected to appear in court for arraignment that very same day. I wish to stress that North Dakota has very little in the way of public transportation and phone service at the camps was pretty much nonexistent. As such, a large number of those released on bail, having no means of communication or transportation, were forced to walk back to Morton County. One such person walked for over 9 hours in an attempt to make it back to his scheduled court appearance; and yes, he was released with no transportation and scheduled to appear in court that same day.
I mention all of this because the man that this painting depicts was driving back and forth between the main camp and the various local jails in an attempt to not only help people find their friends and family but also to help the water protectors make their court appointments. The aforementioned protector that had walked for over 9 hours was only able to make his appointment because this man picked him up and drove him to the courthouse. The image that this painting is based off of was taken on October 24, 2016 at Oceti Sakowin outside of the legal tent. At this time he was attempting to aid a young woman in finding her boyfriend, who was swept up during the arrest on the 22nd.

"We Are Still Here"~Solidarity with Standing Rock
I don't usually do something like this, but getting the message out there is something very important to me. Nawáh, sšúxu`. KatatAxaáA Gidybaus. Taatačitaá'A káNIt, wiitatshánu na sahnish. Hello, my relatives. My name is Bright Eyes. I come from the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara tribes. I am a Standing Rock activist within the state of Montana and I am originally from North Dakota. I go to Montana State for paleontology and Native American studies. I have been to the Oceti Sakowin and Sacred Stone camps numerous times before this and I am currently sitting in one of my afternoon classes as I write this. Today has been particularly hard for me since the evictions are still taking place at Standing Rock. Innocent people are being arrested and this is all for an oil pipeline. A pipeline. A piece of machinery. I don't know about you, but this is just wrong. Since when have human beings stooped to a level where a man-made structure is more important than people's lives and wellbeing? Where did the love for people of different religion, sex, color, etc. go in this short of time? This pipeline has affected my view on the entire world and it saddens me that law enforcement would rather protect a black snake rather than men, women, children, two spirits, elders, etc. North Dakota has turned from my home state to something I don't even recognize anymore. I don't talk about race here because it's not about that. This is about human decency and we have lost that as a species. Only when we cut down the last tree, killed the last animal, and polluted our last water source will people realize that we cannot eat or drink money. My Indigenous brothers and sisters, along with people of all different colors and genders are standing against the creed of oil companies and state governments. I stand with Standing Rock and I ask you to stand up. Aho! ✊🏽

Brave, generous creatures,
We have somethings of a most exciting nature to share with you all.
Four of our wonderful loves have offered additional prizes that you can win with the purchase of a 2Spirit Warrior Society Raffle Ticket.  Tickets are $5 each and a name will be drawn for each prize in the raffle.
 https://2spiritwsraffle.tumblr.com/
Every buck raised through this raffle will go directly to 2Spirit Indigenous Warriors throwing down on the ground against the Dakota Access Pipeline.  We are in direct communication with this crew as it is made up of some of the people we love dearly.  Times are desperate with the raid yesterday and arrest of 76 Water Protectors and ongoing raids today at Sacred Stone.  The 2Spirit Warrior Society are gearing up to mobilize and we are pushing to meet our fundraising goals in order to ensure they have a reliable ride for arctic conditions to make it to court dates, actions and reach medical aid when needed.
From this need, love and solidarity have come these incredible gifts from queer artists across Turtle Island.

Artist Nick Berger, (they/them) is an artist and musician living on occupied Pocomtuc Territories in so-called greenfield massachusetts who has donated a 6″ hoop custom embroidery of anything you want!

So dear feral ones, in the spirit of mutual aid and all that is still wild and ungovernable upon the body of the earth, support the 2 Spirit Warrior Society and all the artists, healers and makers who have contributed their labours.
Please contribute financially if you can by entering the raffle and share our updates broadly with your family, friends, co-workers, co-conspirators, lovers, bio fams…

Water is sacred. Water is a human right. The water protectors at Standing Rock continue to fight against the destruction of the Earth upon which we all rely and today, thanks to your contributions through the purchase of Forest Spirit (a facial mask featuring yarrow and cedar), @thegranolgoat and I have raised and donated $349 USD (~$457 CAD) to @sacredstonecamp. We still have more of this mask available and will continue to raise and donate each month through the sale of this item until we run out. . Words from @rainforestactionnetwork: "On January 24, the new [US] president signed an executive order to fast-track the Keystone XL pipeline and the Dakota Access pipeline. We’re at a critical turning point in the fight for our communities, for our planet, for Indigenous rights and for our future against the very real threat of climate change. . This is a fight for [the US, but also other parts of the world] against the denial of science, the denial of human rights and the destruction of our natural world in the name of rampant corporate greed." . On February 1, groups in various places will gather to demonstrate against the Dakota Access Pipeline and to encourage financial institutionts to withdraw their involvement. To find a gathering near you, visit Ran.org/defund_dapl. On February 22 the Oceti Oyate camp, among others on treaty land claimed by the US Army Corps, were ordered to evacuate. Unarmed Water Protectors and several journalists documenting human rights violations were arrested, and many others were injured during violence initiated by the state. More than 700 Water Protectors are now fighting criminal cases, and North Dakota is handing down convictions... but the fight is not over. . Yesterday, March 10, the Native Nations March on Washington was held and Standing Rock Indian Reservation Chair, Dave Archambault II, spoke to the crowd letting them know that the way so many people have been feeling these past few months is precisely the way First Nations have felt for centuries. He reminded everyone that they are not defeated, that the struggle will continue, and that the best way to resist is together in solidarity. The full text of his address can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/nativenationsmarch. . In January @thegranolagoat and I launched a fundraising effort in support of the Water Protectors at Standing Rock -- Forest Spirit, a face mask featuring healing yarrow petals and cedarwood essential oil. At the end of January, thanks to your support, we donated our first $349 USD (~ $457 CAD). Since January 31, another $119.25 CAD has been raised (9 masks sold) and there are currently 10 more available, which could mean an additional $132.50 donated to this very important cause. I would love to forward this remaining $251.75 CAD asap 💓 . Please feel welcome to visit justthegoods.net to contribute to efforts on the ground and in courtrooms. To make a donation directly, please visit: http://standwithstandingrock.net/ and click "Donate". They are currently trying to raise $51,200 USD and are getting close! . #mniwiconi #standingrock #sacredstonecamp #waterprotectors #waterissacred #waterislife #water #decolonizenow #fundraising #legalaid #donate #facialcare #facemask #cedar #yarrow #crueltyfree #vegan #veganskincare #plantpower #solidarity #community #resist

"A drilling rig sits north of the Davis Mountains in Balmorhea. Houston-based Apache Corporation recently announced the discovery of an estimated 15 billion barrels of oil and gas in the area and plans to drill and use hydraulic fracturing on the 350,000 acres surrounding the town. Apache has leased the mineral rights under the town and nearby state park, but has promised not to drill on or under either. While some residents worry that the drilling could affect the spring at the state park and impact tourism, others are excited for the potential economic boom the oil discovery and drilling could bring. ( @michaelciaglo / #HoustonChronicle )" ** Fracking uses 5,000,000 gallons of water a year. It is mixed with over 300+ carcinogenic chemicals and either injected back into the ground and/or left outside to evaporate and/or sprayed into the air. This process has already caused Earthquakes and poisoned thousands upon thousands of environments, people, and animals.
