Something Sweet; Prologue

5:30 A.M.

You stare at your alarm clock as it beeps- you swear that thing has grown eyes and is staring at you. You drag yourself out of bed, and before you know it, you’re flitting about your bakery getting ready for the day. The night before, you’d made a perfect batch of Eclaires that you’re sure will sell well today. When it finally hits seven, you flip the sign hanging on the bakery’s front door from ‘closed’ to ‘open’.

You normally don’t get that many people in the early mornings, and today is no different. A few people come in and buy some of your Thanksgiving themed cookies, a few others the seasonal peppermint coffee. It being Thanksgiving, you don’t see anybody in your store at all after nine.

Until it hits noon, anyway.

When the bell fastened above the front door tinkles, you’re in the way back messing around with some dough for a prospective holiday pastry you’ve been thinking about. “Coming!”

When you round the corner, you’re a bit surprised to find who’s looking back at you. His eyes wrinkle in exhaustion, and he’s subtly fidgeting with his fingers. He’s wearing a smoothed out sweater vest, crisp dress pants, and a watch that looks like it cost more than your bakery. You wonder why he isn’t wearing a coat- November in New York was by no means warm. You feel like you’ve seen him somewhere before- online? On the street, in the news? Before you can open your mouth to ask how you can help, he begins.

“Why are you open on Thanksgiving?”

Again, he takes you by surprise, but you don’t miss a beat. “Why are you here on Thanksgiving?”

“Touché. Sorry. I’m drunk. And high. I think.” He drops his head into his hands. “I just needed to get inside. Sorry,” he repeats, attempting to wipe the weariness from his eyes.

At first, you don’t know what to say. You don’t really dabble in the world of drugs, nor do you drink, but you feel for him. There’s just something about him- some part of your subconscious that knows something you don’t. He looks like he’s been through it, anyway. It doesn’t hurt to be kind.

“Why don’t you take a seat? Stay in as long as you like. I’m not exactly busy.” You gesture to the various booths and café tables that line the walls and sit throughout your store.

He ducks his head down, pinking slightly. “I’m really sorry.”

You sigh, and feel a tinge of pity. “Go sit. I’ll get you a glass of water.” Reluctantly, he shuffles off, and you fill a glass with bottled water then open your pastry display.

You round the counter and sit in the chair across from him, sliding him the water and setting a prettily decorated cupcake on the table.

“Drink up.” You look at him expectantly. He stares back, then looks down into the glass. “Like you said, you’re drunk and probably high. It’s best you start flushing it out.”

He mumbles a quick ‘thank you’ and takes a dainty sip of water.

“Come on. You have to drink more than that.” I peel the wrapper on the cupcake back and push it into his hands. Hesitantly, he eats.

“This is really good,” he says quietly. “You made it?”

“Of course I did. I bake everything here.”

Eventually, he finished both the water and the treat. With what you read as shame, he thanks you profusely again before being interrupted by someone entering the shop. Before you get up, he says softly, “Let me pay.”

“What? Absolutely not. It’s on the house.”

You go to help your customer, but when they’re gone, you realize that so is the man from before.

And it looks like they will have a mini-WIll actor just like they had a mini-El for s4. Season 5 WILL have flashbacks to Will in the Upside Down, and he IS a central character to the season!

Since the Upside Down is stuck in November 1983, will they get to interact with young Will? Will they need to change the past to change the present?

The Duffers have teased that s5 will start with a child singing a familiar song amid "cold wind and groaning trees." Will this be Will singing "Should I stay or should I go?" Which Mike heard in s1 and tried to answer him back on the walkie talkie? (The picture looks like Noah's coaching the kid how to act out something, just like MBB did for Mini El. It looks like he's getting up in response to hearing something. Maybe to hearing Mike?)

Are they going to open the season with a Byler scene, basically? Establishing one central thing this season will be about?

And what about Flickergate? lol

MORE SPECULATION: Every season has had an 80s movie as its main inspiration. I'm thinking because of time travel that Season 5 will be inspired by The Terminator. Now I need Will Byers pumping a shotgun like Sarah Connor to save Mike! =D

So... Those Secret Life tarot predictions I've been doing huh? Well it's Grian's turn! Reminder that you don't really need to know anything about Tarot Cards. If you're curious though it's just a simple 5 card spread I made specifically for this. Also I did this on November 2nd of 2023 (it's a Thursday) cuz I'll probably decide to schedule this as to not spam the tags lol.

First Card - Start

So this card was rough because while I was placing it I turned it without thinking about it (which I like never do). I had to debate whether to interpret it upright (how it would've been had I not turned it) or reversed (how it was when flipped it over). As I said in the very first post, I'm doing these as practice so this is also just a 'well wtf do I do in this situation' sort of milestone. In the end I've decided to interpret it as upright with a kind of side note of reversal... if that makes sense... I'm gonna combine the meanings a little bit!

I drew the Ace of Wands... uh... funky style. (Sure that makes sense right? /silly) This card is describing Grian's start of Secret Life as involving a lot of hard work. There could be some minor setbacks but he'll likely work through them fine enough. He'll probably have a great time, honestly, if this card has any truth to it.

Second Card - Individual

This card is describing how Grian does in the game basically. For it I drew the reversed 8 of Swords. He survives through the more difficult first part of starting in a new life series world. So far he's doing very well too so this is supported! If you've seen his episodes you'll know he's not exactly down a whole lot of hearts yet. This card also talks about being open to change and new opportunities. What new opportunities? I'm so glad you asked. To the next card!

Third Card - Social

This card is meant to describe how Secret Life goes for Grian on the social end of this series. I drew the Death card which made me laugh. The death card is about change, rebirth, and transitioning from one phase to another. My brain immediately went to how everyone and their grandma were drawing comparisons between his first ep with Scar on the camel and third life. This makes me think he's either not going to team up with anyone or if he does it'll be someone he hasn't yet and well... So far it's looking like the former! It makes that lil' comparison extra fun cuz this is saying he'll be putting the past expirences behind for something new.

Fourth Card - Big Impact

I drew the reversed Page of Pentacles which is wild cuz I drew that for Joel too but as his season end. Here I drew it for Grian's 4th card which is describing what makes the greatest impact for him this season. This card talks about a lack of progress and getting lost in the details. He might get too caught up in something and forget about his task.

Fifth Card - End

I drew the 3 of Pentacles for how Grian'll end Secret Life. This card talks about collaboration and learning. He's probably very secure in his beliefs... except that those beliefs might be a strict adherence to the rules which could ultimately cause him more problems than necessary. It also means he could take the advice and criticisms of his fellow players pretty well.

So do I think this reading is predicting Grian to win? Not in the slightest. 3 of pentacles really feeling like a participation trophy here lol. Like 'yay you learned things and got to make content with all these lovely people!' Not exactly something screaming he's gonna win. If I had to take a gander as to how it goes down, I'd reckon he gets distracted and fails a hard task or fails his normal tasks multiple times (based on the 4th card). That would then somehow push him to be more strict with rule following (based on the 5th card). If that is what happens, the fail would probably happen either soon and then affect the majority of his season or later when he's low. Maybe it's what turns him red.

My predictions for when Life Series season 5 starts (I do not know this for a fact, I just want proof in case I'm right lol)

It's been teased for at least a month so far. September seems too early, and December too late.

The gap between DL and LimL was about 7 months. The gap between LL and DL was about 6. Since this seems to be the norm (as of now, mostly post-pandemic) I'd wager that the 5th season starts in October. Maybe late November, depending on the gimmick.

📇 Amai's Writing Goal

I don't need to write a lot, but I do want to write every day. Even just one sentence! I wanna keep up my momentum!

I'm estimating the end of my story to be at around 300-350k words and I think I'm at around ~270k words? I literally don't know, everything is in different places... 😅So anyway, I just want to ensure I'm always making progress.

Plus, I tend to write more when I'm writing more! So I think this will be healthy for me, as long as I pace myself!

🛁 Amai's Self-Care Goal

I need start (again) setting Quarterly Goals and I need to start journaling every day again. I don't have to write a ton, I have to write 5 bullet points:

What's up with my at-work job?

What's up with my social life?

What media am I consuming lately?

What's up with my personal projects?

What's going on in my personal/internal world?

My sense of time has been absolutely shot since the start of the Pandemic and graduating college hasn't helped. See, what ends up happening is I get to the end of any chunk of time -- a week, a month, a season -- and I PANIC that I haven't accomplished anything.

But having a literal checklist of Quarterly Goals helps proves otherwise -- I can cross off a bunch of stuff, add new things that I accomplished not-on-the-list, and I can tell my anxiety to shut up. (And yes, I don't measure my self-worth by my productivity but I AM aware that my time is limited on this earth and I want to make sure I'm doing the things that are important to me during it!)

And journalling every day is another good way to ensure my sense of time stays in-tact! And having an in-tact sense of time ensures I talk to my friends enough and give myself enough free time and etc. etc.

And that's all!
