Dirt: 'The Novelist' is anti-autofiction
The author lives (especially on TikTok).
Tumblr media
Akosua T. Adasi on Jordan Castro’s The Novelist and a reader’s need to identify with their favorite authors.
A friend recently sent me a TikTok from user Eleanor Stern regarding critic Andrea Long Chu’s scathing review of Otessa Moshfegh’s Lapvona, and Moshfegh’s reputation as a contrarian. In the video, Stern comments on how writers like Moshfegh (who has also recently established herself as a working model) and Sally Rooney have become brands online, with the aesthetic signifiers related to their books (both authors frequently crop up under the hashtag #sadgirlreads) coming to mean more than their actual texts. Stern declares: “It’s a part of self-presentation and affiliating with a certain cultural in-group almost more than it is about the text itself.”
Stern’s comments are part of a buzzy conversation happening right now about branding and publicity, and the life books should live. When the New York Post wrote in 2019 that Gigi and Bella Hadid were making “books the hottest accessory of 2019,” many online claimed to be upset that the publication was suggesting that the model sisters weren’t carrying books just to read them. People have always used books to imply that they belong to a certain class or subculture. But just a few years after Hadid-gate, the idea that books can serve purely as an accessory is a more comfortable one. When a book’s image comes to matter more than the content, where does this leave authors?

Know what absolutely kills me about Wyll is that his mantra is “it’s okay, the only person it’s hurting is me”
He’s forced into selling his soul to save the city: “I can’t regret it, it saved people and the only person it’s hurting is me”
Letting Karlach live knowing it will violate his contract: “The only person it will hurt is me”
Putting himself in danger endlessly so at least the powers he has will go to some use before he’s dragged to hell, knowing it risks him dying young and being trapped there early: “The only person it will hurt is me.”
I know for a fact that if he were given the power to make the decision re: selling his soul again to save his father in act 3, he would do exactly that. The only person it hurts is him, and over and over he’s marked himself an acceptable casualty in any situation.

Interview Brag Book
Brag Books Why not show and tell in job interviews? A picture is worth 1,000 words. A portfolio, leave-behind, or interview presentation binder – also known as a “brag book” – is a great way for job seekers to prepare and showcase their skills and accomplishments. While portfolios are expected in certain “creative” professions, jobseekers in many more “traditional” fields could benefit from…

Week 1 Blog Post
Tumblr media
One of the precepts of Social Media Best Practice is building a personal brand, "a process that is always evolving and adapting, just as you are always evolving and adapting." An important strategy for personal branding online is to engage; this is where you ensure you "talk to others, join the conversation, join groups, make friends and make sure you respond to people." Mejuri is a now established jewelry brand based in Canada. Their online presence has grown incrementally over the past 5 years, and we watched them grow from a small Vancouver jewelry brand to multiple successful locations across the country. Engaging with their customers is a part a personal branding that Mejuri ensures they are consistent in. As you can see in the screenshot above, they reply back to comments under their posts often - this builds a strong relationship with their target market and makes potential and current customers feel that they are seen and heard by the brand they are supporting - and that support comes full circle for Mejuri.
Tumblr media
Another brand's social media presence that I find interesting is The Honey Pot Co. For the sake of context, they are a women's hygiene product company, but what I find interesting is how they have approached Self Branding, and their hyper display of their "authentic selves." As you can see in the screenshot above, the brand uses very raw language to capture their target audience. Women's hygiene has always been a taboo subject of conversation across all cultures, and this brand works to actively break the stigma of conversation around women's hygiene. While most of their posts come across as relatable memes, they still ensure that their products are tied in to their playful nuances. In the comic above, for example, a woman is seen putting on a pad while on a video meeting; while it plays on the fear we all have of doing something odd with the camera accidentally on, users can still see a Honey Pot Co product pictured in the background, as well as a corresponding caption promoting their "Peppermint Milkshake pad." Although ones "authentic self" is discussed as something in discourse of "self branding," this brand effectively ties both concepts into their personal branding. Honey Pot Co breaks that wall by portraying a sense of authentic self that their target market can relate to, effectively allowing them to feel authentic in their purchase of the Honey Pot Co products.

okay last one for the night but. honestly i really hate how the franchise has been using loyalty to Rick as a shield for so long. If Rick was involved in a project or not doesn't matter, especially not anymore.
ReadRiordan and the publishing for the franchise has been using this tactic for ages - they obscure if any writing related to the series wasn't written by Rick unless it's special circumstances. It's near impossible to find out who the ghostwriters are (Stephanie True Peters and Mary-Jane Knight). TSATS was promoted as the first time we got a non-Riordan (Rick or Haley) author working on one of the companion novels despite having seven already existing ghostwritten books in the series. The only reason Mark Oshiro was emphasized so heavily for TSATS was because they also work as a sensitivity reader for topics such as queer identity, and Rick had received backlash in the past for being a Straight Cis Old White Guy repeatedly falling into bad habits (that he hasn't broken out of) with certain characterizations that he kept doubling-down on or retconning into oblivion. The show emphasizes that Rick was involved, but the LA Times article brings into question exactly how much he was involved, and it doesn't even really matter either way. The ReadRiordan site actively avoids putting any writing credits on their articles (or art credits...) or anywhere on their site.
Practically the entire fandom unanimously agrees the musical - which had zero involvement from Rick - is the best adaptation of the series so far, including the TV show. Some of the best writing to come out of the series recently was the stuff ghostwritten by Stephanie True Peters (Camp Half-Blood Confidential, Camp Jupiter Classified, Nine from the Nine Worlds, etc). And yet when promotional stuff is posted about CHB:C, there's clearly coded language used to hide the fact that Rick himself didn't write it. Yes, that's how ghostwriters work, but at this point we should really stop pretending "Rick Riordan" isn't just a pen name for a group of authors like "Erin Hunter" and that Rick is actually writing everything in the series. I can easily look up and see which Animorphs books were ghostwritten, and who those authors were. I can find every "Erin Hunter" easily listed on official sites. And yet most people don't even know the Riordanverse franchise has ghostwriters at all.
And the franchise is still trying to use the "Tio/Uncle Rick" stuff. Author loyalty and marketing parasocial relationships isn't going to save the franchise when the author himself can't hold up his own original themes or even keep basic series bible details straight, and especially not if the editors are barely if at all doing their job. And please at least get a goddamn series bible by this point.

sylvia plath, todd anderson and virginia woolf (aka ACTUAL tortured poets) watching taylor “im breaking up with my boyfriend for his intense depression and blaming it on him, im dating a racist who enjoys watching woc being brutalized and harasses young woc artists, i sent my fans out on a hate train to attack a young woc actress for a line she had to say as part of her job to show how mentally ill her character was, im dating a maga supporter, i refuse to say anything about a current genocide despite being the most influential person in the world right now, i am a billionaire, i fly 13 minute flights and have the highest carbon emission of any celebrity, i am a known white feminist who only speaks about issues when it affects me and has constantly let my fans get away with extreme racism and even encouraged it by associating myself with known racists” swift call herself a tortured poet (her writing sounds like a bunch of thesaurus words slapped over gabba hanna and rupi kaur-esque poetry that was created purely as a trinket for an edgy pinterest board)

Transfem Leo go brrrrrrrrrrrr <3
Tumblr media
A concept I've had in my head of transfem Leo for a while. She'd always felt a little more feminine than her brothers, but just embraced it. It wasn't like she was too upset about being their brother, but the label never settled right. Until Donnie decides that they need like- full DNA/Genetic evaluations just in case they have some underlying issues just waiting to jump out at them and surprise! Leo is biologically female!
Presenting this information to Leo, Donnie is prepared for a gender crisis, but instead he's greeted by Leo being incredibly excited and happy about this news. Leo tells Donnie that she's never really felt like their brother, but didn't think it was too big of an issue to bring up, but then Donnie gives her this information and she's ready to embrace the sister title with her entire being. Finally, it all makes sense! She's not their brother and she never was!
The gender identity crisis hits later when she has a moment of "I'm not trans, but I am and oh god I don't have a communty-", but for now she confides in her brother her true identity
For a while she decides to go by "Doe" because it's close enough to Leonardo, but when her brothers call her Leo she can tell they say the name with their "brother" in mind, so until they get used to her identity, she just sticks with Doe
I rotate her in my mind constantly alsdjflasdf
Tea made some wonderful art of her Here and Here!!!! I still treasure these very much!!
