Spoiler ahead, don’t read the post if you haven’t finished reading the series of Witcher.
I didn’t know cahir dies and someone spoiled it for me while I’m still reading baptism of fire and it left a sour taste in my mouth and I’m like what’s the point now.

Baptism Of Fire by Andrzej Sapkowski
This is the third novel, and fifth book of the Witcher series. I have picked this series up a couple of years ago at this point, and I think I have been reading one/two books each year, for some reason mostly in winter. After the last book I was pretty intimidated by the series, because the political intrigues are really complicated, and the lst book I read felt really slow. Thankfully I found the perfect combination of reading the book with the additional help of the audiobook, as well as taking some notes at the end of each chapter to keep up with everything that is happening since there's a lot of characters in very different situations. With this system I read this book incredibly quickly, and my reading experience has improved so much compared to the last time. Sapkowski's writing is still a bit slow for my personal taste, and most importantly he writes very long chapters which I am not the biggest fan of. That is my main problem with his books, the chapters are too long and sometimes they feel quite messy, because they include a lot of scenes in different places and times which often makes things harder to follow. Aside for this more stuctural thing I really enjoyed my time with this book, I am not going to say much about the plot because it would all be spoilers for this series, but we get to know some new character, and get to know better other character we have seen previously. I am really happy with the main group of people we follow in this novel, I think each one of them is really intriguing in their own way, and although they form a really unsual team it has a lot of potential. I am really curious to find out what will happen next in Geralt's adventure, so much so that I think I'll pick up The Tower Of Swallows as my next read, which is really unlikely of me, as I like to break series apart not to get bored with them. I am really happy I found the enthusiasm I had at the end of the first book, because I was afraid it was slowly going to die down more and more with each novel. I would highly recommend pairing the books with the audio version, it has been helping me immensly. It will take me a long time to finish the series as a whole, but as usual I will bring my updates as I read.
I read this book for the second chance prompt of the winter reading challenge, I originally had another book in mind but I dnf-ed it, and then I remember that when I got this novel I had started reading the first few pages before being too intimidated to continue.

📚 Beautiful Books part 7.2: The Witcher Series by Andrzej Sapkowski 📚
This is part 2 of my Witcher books review, so before you go any farther, go read part 1! I'm going to talk about all 8 of them in a 3 part post, since I can't add more than 30 pictures per post. So get yourself some milk and cookies because this might be long lol.
⚠️Note that there will be some spoilers from either the books, series or games so, read at your own risk.⚠️
Tumblr media
As you might know from a previous post, I got the 1st 7 books for my birthday from my dad, and the last one today.
4) The Time of Contempt:
On the sleeve, we can see, again, the beautiful Yennefer of Vengerberg in front of what seems like a storm that's coming. I'm not sure who the 2 other women in the back are, but maybe Tissaia on the left and Ciri on the right?
Tumblr media
The back, same as the front, but with a quote. "A time of contempt is approaching, Witcher, my friend, a time of great and utter contempt. You have to adapt. What I'm proposing is a simple solution. Someone will die, so someone else can live."
Tumblr media
The side of the sleeve has a close up of the cover on Yennefer at the very top (or bottom), with white and black lettering on a beautiful purple background.
Tumblr media
On the left of the cover without the sleeve, is a grey spine and a black background with another quote, written in a shiny silver. "Do you know when stories stop being stories? The moment someone begins to believe in them." - Codringher
Tumblr media
The spine is grey with the title, written in shiny silver.
Tumblr media
And the back is black with the grey of the spine.
Tumblr media
The endpaper is a map like the previous book, Blood of Elves. It's in what I thought was purple but apparently it's pink, for the details of the map.
Tumblr media
Inside, there's the same full map like in the previous books, but there's unfortunately no other illustrations. (This is the same picture of that map from my previous post. I just didn't feel like taking pictures of the same thing multiple times lol.)
Tumblr media
The text is the same size as in the previous books, with the title of the book at the top of every 2nd page written in black, with a total of 389 pages.
Tumblr media
My favourite part of this book has to be the spine. I just love how simple it looks.
Fun fact about Andrzej Sapkowski: He graduated from the University of Łódź, which is a public research university founded in 1945 in Poland. 🖤
5) Baptism of Fire:
On the sleeve, we see Geralt on Roach, walking through a forest alongside Jaskier (Dandelion in the books and games). In the depths of the forest, an elf is preparing their bow, looking at our favourite duo.
Tumblr media
The back, same as the front with a quote. "Fire purges. And hardens. It must be passed through. Aenyell'hael, ell'ea, sor'ca? In your tongue: a baptism of fire."
Tumblr media
The side of the sleeve has a close up of the cover on Geralt at the very top (or bottom), with white and black lettering on a bright green background.
Tumblr media
On the left of the cover without the sleeve, is a bright green spine and a black background with another quote, written in a shiny green. "We enter the world as a minute part of the life we are given, and from then on we are ever paying off debts. To ourselves. For ourselves. In order for the final reckoning to tally." - Eithné
Tumblr media
The spine is bright green with the title, written in shiny green as well.
Tumblr media
And the back is black with the green of the spine.
Tumblr media
The end paper is the same map of The Witcher universe, but with tints of mint green for the details.
Tumblr media
Inside, there's the same full map like in the previous books, but there's unfortunately no other illustrations. (This is the same picture of that map from my previous post. I just didn't feel like taking pictures of the same thing multiple times lol.)
Tumblr media
The text is the same size in all 8 books really lol, with the title at the top of every 2nd page written in black, with a total of 403 pages.
Tumblr media
My favourite part of this book is the colors. I don't usually like bright green, but like this, it's just beautiful.
Fun fact about The Witcher: Elder Speech, the language used by elves, was created by Sapkowski for the show. It's based on several real languages, like French, Irish, Latin and Welsh. 💚
6) The Tower of Swallows:
On the sleeve, we see someone on a horse, but I can't quite pinpoint who it is. They're In front of a castle on a yellow background. In the back, there's drawings of skeletons on skeleton horses.
Tumblr media
The back, same as the front, but with a quote. "The elf Avallac'h marked our awe and spake: 'This is Tor Zireal, then Tower of the Swallow. This is the Gate of Worlds and the Threshold of Time. Feast your eyes on this sight, man, for not to everyone nor always is it given'."
Tumblr media
The side of the sleeve has a close up of the cover on the horse at the very top (or bottom), with white and black lettering on a yellow background.
Tumblr media
On the left of the cover without the sleeve, is a bright yellow spine and a black background with another quote, written in a shiny silver. "It is better to go forward without an aim than loiter without an aim, and with surety much better than to retreat without an aim." - Regis
Tumblr media
The spine is bright yellow with the title, written in shiny silver.
Tumblr media
And the back is black with the yellow of the spine.
Tumblr media
The endpaper is a map like the previous books, in yellow for the details.
Tumblr media
The text is the same size in all 8 books, with the title at the top of every 2nd page written in black, with a total of 513 pages.
Tumblr media
My favourite part of this book is the sleeve cover art. It's just so well detailed.
Fun fact about Andrzej Sapkowski: He started his literary career as a translator, translating the story "The Words of the Guru" by Cyril M. Kornbluth for Fantastyka magazine. 💛

Note
For the doodle prompt: perhaps the fish soup scene in Baptism of Fire? Maybe Geralt reluctantly peeling the vegetables after Dandelion tells him to? To me that's one of the most heartwarming scenes in the entire series. :)
you're so based for this anon

Les Mis Hidden Name Meanings: “Fantine” (posting here because it got popular on TikTok)
Every character in Les Mis has a name with a deeper symbolic meaning— here’s a video I made for the official @barricadescon TikTok about the meaning behind “Fantine!”
Transcript and Digressions I left out of the video, under the cut:
Every charcater’s name in Les Mis is either a pun, a reference to a historical/mythological figure, or had some deep symbolic meaning — and sometimes it’s all of them at on.
The name “Fantine” comes from the french word “enfantine” or “childike, infant-like.” Her name basically means “Baby.” And obviously this speaks to her innocence and niavetee. But also “baby” is kind of,.,, well it sounds more like an informal term of endearment than an actual legal name?
And that’s because– Plot twist– Fantine isn’t her legal name! What is her legal name? She doesn’t have one.
And the reason she doesn’t have one is directly tied to political turmoil of the era she was born into.
Fantine grew up an orphan living on the streets, without a family without parents. Hugo tells us the origin of her name:
“she bore on her brow the sign of the anonymous and the unknown. (...)She was called Fantine. Why Fantine? She had never borne any other name. At the epoch of her birth the Directory still existed. She had no family name; she had no family; no baptismal name; the Church no longer existed. She bore the name which pleased the first random passer-by, who had encountered her, when a very small child, running bare-legged in the street. She received the name as she received the water from the clouds upon her brow when it rained.”
This moment is adapted beautifully in the Manga adaptation by Takahiro Arai, which I recommend to anyone who loves Les mis, manga, or any combination of those things.
But now let’s talk about the Directory.
To wildly oversimplifly a lot of complex history: Before the French Revolution, the Catholic Church’s records of baptismal ceremonies were often used as a registry of people’s legal names. During the French Revolution, the Revolutionary government– including the Directory– put in place a series of policies we now call “dechristianization,” where they attempted to dismantle the power of Catholic church.
Fantine was born during the age of these dechristianization policies. So she was never baptised, her baptismal name was never recorded, so she has no recorded legal or family name. She’s slipped through the cracks of the legal system, and ended up completely anonymous.
It sets Fantine up as this anonymous child of the Revolution– a stand in for everyone who was left behind when the Revolution was left behind, and kings were restored to the throne.
Fantine’s namelessness is meant to show atomized . How she has NO support system. She has nothing to connect her to other people, nothing to connect her to a support system.
Finally, the way Fantine tends to “slip through the cracks” is something that follows her throughout her life. When she’s fired from her job at a factory, Maroy Madeleine never learns of it– Fantine has this tendency to overlooked and forgotten. She is born anonymous and she dies anonymous. At the end of the story, she is buried in an unmarked grave, with not even the name “Fantine” on her headstone.
It ties into novel’s questions about which people we consider worth remembering, whose lives are worth being records.
And obviously Fantine is not the only character in Les Mis whose name has a deeper symbolic meaning. If you have any other Les Mis character names you’d like to explain, leave their name in the comments below.
Thank you for watching!
From the description of the original tiktok, here are some things that were left out of the video for time:
How this all relates to Cosette’s name(s)
Fantine’s nickname “The Blonde,” and how this relates to the way she’s dehumanized by Tholomyes
How the 2018 Bbc series fundamentally misunderstands Fantine’s character, and how one sign of this is that they give her a full legal first and last name
How Fantine’s name shows up/is revealed is significant parts of the story (like when Valjean reveals her signature on a letter to Thenardier, allowing him to take Cosette away)
How Fantine’s inability to write ties into the way it’s difficult for her to record her own story
How some of Valjean’s last words are revealing Fantine’s name to Cosette
Thanks again for reading!

for the love of ... bob? - jake seresin x reader (1/2)
Tumblr media
Summary: Being Jake's (best) friend - sorry, Javy - proved to have its ups and downs but there was something about having him in your corner you couldn't resist. Jake and you just clicked on a deeper level. That's why you didn't get it when the Southern boy was acting so weird.-
Word count: 3.6k
Warnings: Language, Jake being an idiot (what else is new?), Jealous! + Soft!Jake, fluff
Author’s note: Just something fun I wanted to write. I kinda hate myself for not writing for Bradley first, since I love the guy. You know, Jake's fics I love to read, yet I couldn't stand him while watching Maverick. Go figure.
I haven't watched the film enough to distinguish the traits of the characters, so I can't guarantee for accuracy for the side characters. I can only include a handful of people - that's why I don't have people like Reuben in there since their character traits aren't included in the fandom page.

“So, tell us all the details. Preferably, the humiliating kind,” Natasha asked with a curious air.
You smiled. “What about?”
“Hangman, of course.”
The Dagger Squad was the perfect company to be around, you decided. Jake, your childhood best friend, who you haven’t seen in years, offered The Hard Deck as the place for you to wait until he arrived. Video calls didn’t hold up to the real thing. Especially, with you two being very busy people and you finally getting out of New York to spend some quality time together.
“I need to get the embarrassing goods, at least before Hangman shows up. I mean, we have the perfect person to interrogate. In the rare instances, when he talks about something other than himself, Hangman keeps mentioning you,” she mused.
“Nat-” Bob interjected, who was sitting next to her in a booth while the rest of their squad were scattered in the bar.
Natasha turned her head. “Aren’t you a little bit curious about the depraved mind of Jake Seresin?”
“Not really.”
You snorted at their torn convictions when Mickey and Javy arrived at their table with bottles of beer.
“What did we miss?” Javy asked.
Natasha’s stubborn gaze didn’t stray from yours for many seconds. “I’m trying to crack Y/N.” Her eyes met Javy’s over her shoulder. “Tell Rooster he needs to stall him until I get to the good bits.”
You looked around speculatively. “Is this some sort of initiation or baptism by fire Jake should’ve warned me about?”
Javy offered a small reprieve. “Don’t mind her. She just wants to pick your brain. How long are you going to stay?”
“About a week. Enough time for Jake to show me around San Diego.”
Mickey took a gulp from his drink. “Good luck with that.”
Warm breath against your neck sent shivers down your spine when someone whispered into your ear, “Did I just hear my name?”
Your body jolted at hearing the unexpected voice. “Oh my God.” You turned and found a cheeky Jake standing behind you. “You little f- Don’t startle me like that!” Clambering out of the booth, you jumped into his arms, while giggling from the shock. “Hey, you,” you said, holding on tightly.
“Hey, yourself. Someone’s gotta keep you on your toes, darlin’.”
“You’re such a jerk,” you whispered into his neck.
Jake swayed you lightly. “You love when I’m a jerk.”
Leaning back, you pressed your fingers an inch apart. “Just a tad.” You hesitated. “Like about 10%.”
Jake rolled his eyes. “Oh please. Talk about 75%. It’s part of my charm,” he murmured, stroking your lower back.
“Is this what you tell everyone here?” You teased, pointing to his colleagues behind you.
Javy’s scoff was joined by the others.
You looked back to see their reactions. “You know, I’m starting to really like your group of friends.” While turning back, you narrowed your eyes when you saw Jake glowering at the Dagger Squad before his expression turned into an innocent one.
“I’m starting to question your taste in people,” he said.
Someone snickered next to him. “That’s funny, … Hangman.”
Realizing that another person joined their company, you turned towards the man who looked vaguely familiar from the pictures Jake had sent you. Not to mention, you remembered Natasha’s remark from earlier that Jake would show up with someone else.
“Rooster, right?” You stepped away from Jake’s embrace and shook Bradley’s hand in greeting. Jake merely sighed and crossed his arms.
“Bradley’s fine.” He faced the rest of the group. “By the way, am I the only one that felt really awkward just standing here, watching those two?”
Mumbles echoed all around. “No, you’re not.” Still slightly by the display of the too-long-hug.
A sigh left Jake, who placed an arm around your shoulder. “Don’t listen to the others. And the words of the chicken shouldn’t be trusted. I hope those knuckleheads treated you right.”
You shrugged. “It was fun. I was this close to reveal your darkest secrets for a slice of a good ol’ fashioned apple pie made by … Phoenix, was it?”
“There’ll be no revealing. And no pie,” Jake interjected before pointing at Natasha. “You’ve already been in the company of Phoenix and the goon squad for less than an hour and Nat already found out your weakness for sweets,” he whispered against your neck. “At least you didn’t have to be subjected to the likes of Rooster here.” A shiver coursed through his body. “I shudder at the thought of you having to listen to him at first. He’ll probably want to talk about his caterpillar of a moustache.”
A languid smirk drew on Bradley’s lips as he stroked his mentioned facial hair. “Very funny. You jealous?”
You tilted your head at their teasing. “You have some weird fixation on Bradley’s facial hair. Didn’t you talk on the phone about-”
Abruptly, Jake took you by the hand and dragged you to the bar counter. “Let’s get some food into you. Your blood sugar’s getting awfully low. Someone’s getting tired already.”
“You’re being such a grump, Jake.”
Jake leaned against the counter. “I’m not. I’m just making sure you’re getting some nachos into you, darlin’.”
“You need to be nicer. We both know you’re more of a sweetheart than this.”
He rolled his eyes. “I have a reputation to uphold. And don’t let yourself be bribed by the others.” Jake turned to Penny. “A basket of nachos for this one, Penny?” You rolled your eyes at seeing Jake point at the top of your head.
There was something about Penny’s playful glance that warmed you upon first meeting. The woman nudged her head at Jake. “Be careful with this one.”
With mischief in your eyes, you stole a glance at him. “I know. This one … has been trouble for as long as I can remember.”
“Hey!” Jake uttered in mock outrage before he did introductions. “Penny, that’s Y/N. She’s my friend,” he said, placing his hand on your back.
“And here I thought I was your best friend.”
Jake hushed any further confessions, whispering, “But don’t tell Javy.”
You turned to Penny with a smile. “See? He’s such a big softie.”
Penny smirked. “I’m starting to. Where are you from?”
“Moved around a lot as a kid. Dad’s an Air Force pilot.” You waved towards him. “We grew up together in Texas. But I live in New York.”
Penny’s eyes lit up at the mention. “I’ll get you some cheese dip.”
“Thanks.”
Jake watched Penny wander off with a speculative gaze. “Someone’s making friends quickly.”
“It’s okay. I’ll teach you my ways,” you said only half-teasingly and stroked Jake’s arm. Your hand lingered on his muscles. Wait, were they flexing? “Woah, what happened to your arm, dude?”
Jake’s voice turned concerned. “Why? What’s wrong?”
There was something akin to awe in your voice. “Your bicep feels like it’s going to rip through your shirt.”
His shoulders were shaking when he chuckled. There was something about Jake turning his head to hide his blushing cheeks that stunned you even to this day. “You’re such a smartass.”
“I’m serious. Someone’s really working out, huh?” You mumbled to yourself, “This could make a girl feel weak in the knees.”
“Okay, you need food,” Jake said with a resolute mindset, before calling over your shoulder, “Thanks, Penny.”
He pushed the basket towards your elbow. “Get some chips into you.” Jake just watched you munch on your crispy snack. “Speaking of food, you want to join me and the group to some Barbecue this weekend?”
You barely lifted your head. “Barbecue? Special occasion?”
“Rooster’s uncle Maverick is celebrating his birthday-”
“Woah, hold your horses, Jake.”
You raised your hands. Either to stop Jake from continuing or to restart your own brain. “Come again? Maverick?” Your hands hovered over your mouth, as you mumbled, “You’re inviting me to Maverick’s birthday barbecue party? I don’t feel prepared for this.”
Jake groaned. “Oh great, I forgot your dad is such a Maverick fanboy. Of course.” He closed his eyes in a mixture of misery and defeat.
“Jake,” you breathed in deeply and covered his shoulders with your hands, mindful of not dropping nacho dust on his shirt. “Jake,” you began again, “I’ve never told you this, but this is the first time when I realized how absolutely invaluable you are to me as a best friend.”
“I’m seriously regretting telling you this.”
Tumblr media
You nibbled on your lip. “I think I scared Jake off with my … how do I say it … domineering admiration for Maverick. I’m getting the feeling he’s embarrassed of me. You have no idea how quickly he dashed the moment we arrived here.”
Natasha appeared nonchalant at your worries while she took a bite from her noodle salad on her paper plate. “Not possible. I’ve only met you yesterday and can affirm that man couldn’t be closer to you. Hangman was probably held up by something. Or he’s just elevating his testosterone level with Rooster again. You met the birthday kid already?”
“Nope.” At the mention, your hands tightened around the food container.
A soothing smile tugged on Natasha’s lips. “Deep breaths. You can’t miss him.” She pointed outside to the backyard. “He’s the guy at the grill, in the sunglasses and Hawaiian shirt. If he has a mustache, you’ve gone too far.”
“Got it.” You exhaled quietly and reminded yourself under your breath, “No mustache, Hawaiian shirt.”
“You’ll survive, don’t worry.” Natasha looked behind her. “Rooster, take her with you. She wants to meet the birthday man in question.”
“Sure.” Bradley stepped forward and offered his arm.
Your body acted on pure instinct.
“Holding my hand, alright, that’s fine.”
You only mouthed in gratitude, “Thank you.”
They walked a few steps onto the lawn when Bradley looked around. “Where’s your boyfriend?”
“Nat told me he was probably wrestling in the mud with you to assert his dominance.” You cleared your throat when you realized something. “And not my boyfriend.”
“Whatever you say. Just making sure where you two stand if he sees us standing together, holding hands.”
“Jake Seresin is not my dad,” you said absentmindedly when a dark-haired man caught your eye. Your throat felt dry. “Is that him?”
“As everyone keeps telling me.” Bradley approached the man standing behind the grill. “I found someone who wants to send their birthday wishes, Mav.”
Maverick revealed a crooked smirk. “Is that so?” You could feel his curious gaze through his sunglasses. “You’re a new face.”
“Um, yeah. I’m Jake’s friend.”
“Hangman has friends?”
“I know it’s a first for everybody,” you admitted. Knowing that Bradley and Jake were at least on speaking terms, and with Jake inviting you to Maverick’s barbecue party, you elaborated, “He needs some time to let people get close.”
Bradley gasped. “You don’t say.”
You focused on Maverick. “A few days ago, Jake invited me to your birthday. Hope that’s okay. I brought you peach cobbler as a present.”
At the mention, Bradley’s head whipped around. “Jesus, why didn’t you just go with that?”
Maverick moved his glasses until they laid atop his head and his eyes were uncovered. “You had me at cobbler.” He rubbed his hands against his jeans. “Bradley, you mind taking over the grill for a bit?”
“Fine. Get me a beer along the way?”
“Sure.” Maverick faced you again when he led you towards the table filled with food. “I didn’t catch your name?”
Just being in Maverick’s company felt surreal. You tried to restrain yourself from appearing too much like a crazy person.
“Um, Y/N … L/N. You’re Maverick?” Nervously, you stroked a curl of hair behind your ear. Even saying that name while standing right in front of him felt out of this world.
“Pete’s just fine.” His expression turned inquisitive. “Did Hangman tell you stories or did I miss something?”
You swallowed thickly. “My dad’s a big fan of yours. He’s a pilot in the Air Force. Told me stories ever since I was a kid. Your flight maneuvers have been legendary.”
He smiled at the devotion in your voice. “Still are.” You adored that playful glint in his eyes still shining through.
“Definitely. You probably get this all the time.”
“Want a beer?” After seeing you nod, he gave you a bottle. “Sometimes. Although, that kind of reverie I’m not used to.”
To calm your nerves, you downed some alcohol. “Really? Okay, I’ll try to control myself. However, Iceman’s skills were far-” Your eyes widened at your blabbing mouth before you covered it. “I’m sorry, too much liquid courage.”
Pete—even thinking that name felt strange—released guffaws of laughter at your gaffe. “Hey, it’s still my birthday!”
“I know, I’m sorry. Happy birthday, Ma-Pete.”
Tumblr media
~ Jake POV ~
“Hey, Hangboy, I need to have a word with you,” Jake heard Natasha’s hard voice a few feet away from them as he hung out with the boys. Despite that, the concept of strength in numbers didn’t make him feel safe, judging by her vehemence.
He swallowed at the dark glare in Nat’s eyes. “Vernacular?”
Natasha didn’t appreciate the humor and crossed her arms, letting uncomfortable silence fester around them.
Jake pressed his lips together. “Bad timing?”
“Someone ever say you’re a bad friend?”
Without hesitation, he replied dryly, “You. Every morning when I show up to work.”
“I had to send Bradley in Y/N’s direction because she was nervous about meeting Maverick.”
He groaned at the thought, throwing his head back. “Oh, poor Y/N. Being forced onto the company of that dull-stache? Sounds horrible.” Jake checked his surroundings, hoping to pick them up.
There was something about Natasha’s innocent eyes, with murder in her eyes, that unsettled him deeply.
“You make me want to punch you in the gut. And you know I grew up with brothers. I know how to make it look like an accident.”
Jake dropped the drink he was holding on a nearby table. “I have a plan.”
Natasha tilted her head in fascination. “Wow, your brain can actually do that? Could’ve fooled me. What does that even look like?”
He drew nearer at the sound of her challenge. “It’s called giving each other space. Did I miss something or why are you so gung-ho when it comes to Y/N? Do we need to have a talk?”
“Five minutes in her company and I already know how she’s too good for you.”
Something bitter settled in his stomach at the mere mention. As if he didn’t already know. He smiled tensely. “Thanks for the reminder, Phoenix. Do I need to save her from Rooster?”
Natasha waved a hand. “Not to worry. Y/N is having fun with Bob.”
His mind went blank, trying to process her words. Jake pursed his lips, feeling confused. “Wait—w—why—what are you saying? Bob? Bob with the glasses? Or is there another Bob I should know?”
Natasha hummed, analyzing his reaction. She chose to unnerve him further by chuckling maniacally. “Cake stand. Have fun.” And with that she left.
Jake whipped his head around and narrowed his eyes. The food area instantly caught his eye. Y/N stood with Bob and was laughing uproariously. It felt X-Files-strange to watch that anomaly. Y/N arched her back and patted Bob’s shoulder, with a plate of cake slice in her hand.
Feeling perturbed by the macabre reality, Jake imagined Y/N being into Bob of all people. He frowned at that scenario, whispering, “Bob?”
Tumblr media
~ Y/N POV ~
You held your stomach. Your cheeks were hurting from uncontrollable laughter, as you were trying to breathe. “Oh my God, Bob, that’s so-”
Jake inched closer with a small smile on his face. “What’s so funny?” He draped his arm over Y/N’s shoulder and reached for her dessert plate, either so she wouldn’t drop it or to have a taste himself. Without looking at him, you placed it into his hands.
You took a deep breath to calm yourself. “Why didn’t you tell me that Bob is so funny?”
Jake swallowed before coughing. “You learn something new every day. Still waters, huh?”
Bob smiled awkwardly.
Upon seeing his reaction, you spoke up, “I always hated that saying. Bob’s an absolute sweetheart.” To reinforce your point to him, you rubbed Bob’s shoulder.
Bob adjusted his glasses while blushing. “I try my best, ma’am.”
“Bob!” You chuckled in mock outrage, swatting lightly against his chest.
He nodded with a small smile. “Yes, Y/N, affirmative.”
“We’re getting to know each other. I just found out that Bob’s from Montana and his momma used to be a Grizzlies mascot. Personally, I’m more of a Saints girl, but to each their own.”
Jake groaned, with his mouth full. “I’m eating here,” he muttered indignantly. Jake swallowed his food. “What did I ever do to you? The last time we did this, we had the Cowboys/Saints-gate.”
You leaned your head back against Jake’s chest, patting his cheek consolingly. “He’s such a big baby.”
Bob pressed his lips together. “Uh, I think I hear my name. I need to say hello to Maverick real quick.”
You reached out with your arm. “Oh, do put your feelers out if the birthday guy is still fine with me after I was blabbing my mouth about g-loc and Iceman’s record stats.”
“He’s probably fine.”
“But still!” You called out against his back as he left.
Tumblr media
It was turning out to be a quiet evening, you realized, rubbing your feet.
Jake stepped into the living room, drying his moist hair with a towel. He leaned his shoulder against the doorway, watching you. “Would you look at that.”
You were transfixed on the film playing on Jake’s TV while you snuggled deeper under the towel on the couch. “What’s up?”
Jake decided to join you on the couch and put your feet on his lap. He spread his legs comfortably. Unconsciously, warming your heels. “You know, feels like old times. You sitting on my couch, taking all the blankets.”
You covered your eyes, with a groan, and leaned your head back. “You make me sound like a mooch. I offered to go to a hotel.”
“Hey, that’s not what I meant.” Jake chuckled. You felt the warmth of his hand when he reached for yours. Before you could blink, Jake stared deeply into your eyes and interlaced your fingers together. With a smile, he whispered, “I missed this. Feels like old times.”
With blushing cheeks, you felt your skin tingling at sitting so close to him. It was moments like these that made you question the nature of your friendship. You swallowed at seeing Jake’s sage-green eyes sparkle. His soft smile was making it hard to breathe.
You whispered, “Me too.”
“You know what else I miss? And what I can’t stop thinking about?”
You swallowed thickly, licking your lips. Feeling uncertain by his thought process, you slowly asked, “Which is what?”
Jake inched closer. “How I used to do this.” He tilted his head, rubbing his wet hair into the crook of your neck.
“You jerk!” You giggled from his attack. It made him seem more like a dog than a human when he was content in brushing his wet hair against your skin.
He grumbled lowly, as his warm breath puffed against your skin. “But this feels really nice. I could stay like this forever,” he said with a hum.
Your phone emitted a notification sound. “You’re an idiot.” Slapping against his forehead to push him away, deep chuckles followed you while your focus switched to your phone.
“You hungry? I could whip up some chicken teriyaki for us? I think I got some sauce in the cabinet. I know how much you love your teriyaki.” He groaned while standing up.
Giggles left your mouth when you read the incoming messages.
Jake turned his head. “Your girlfriends miss you already?”
You bit your lip. “No, it’s Bob just being sweet.”
Blinking slowly, Jake tried to process the words you just uttered. He cleared his throat. Jake’s voice turned slightly high-pitched. “Come again?” He coughed, placing his hands on his waist. “Are we talking about the same Bob? Bob Bob?”
You hummed in agreement without looking up.
He mumbled, “Didn’t know you guys already exchanged numbers. That’s quick, … right?”
With a curious gaze, you looked up. “What do you mean?”
Jake paused. “What do you mean?” He licked his lips, backtracking a bit. “With, you know, Bob … being a total sweetheart.”
You smiled fondly at the memory of the barbecue. “Well, he is. I really loved talking to him.”
With grumbling breaths, Jake puffed his chest. “Really?”
You shrugged your shoulders. “Yep, it was fun.”
“As you keep mentioning,” Jake murmured.
“I did some thinking,” you spoke, “and I was wondering, how would you feel about doing karaoke night with your squad?”
At first, Jake had a look of appreciation which took a turn to disappointment. “But karaoke night is our thing,” he said, pointing between them.
“I know, but this could be like a bonding thing. You’d get to know them, I’d get to know them and we could have fun together. Win-win!”
He sighed deeply, letting his shoulders drop. “You’re far too invested in this.”
“I don’t want them to remember me as the friend who didn’t want to bother with them.”
Jake’s voice turned into a soothing murmur. “They wouldn’t dare think that.”
With a whisper, you enunciated, “Not if we do karaoke night. It’s going to be fun, I promise.”

content/warnings: gn!reader, fluff, doesn’t follow cannon super closely (i’m stupid), cursing, mentions of spencelle (bc i said so)
notes: lmao finally got this out
word count: 2.0k
masterlist series masterlist
Tumblr media
hotch opened the door and brought you in. spencer took note of everything; the curve of your lips, the way you walked. he had never been so enamored with a single person before. sure, he’d had crushes. but never once had he immediately needed to know someone.
aaron’s introduction of you was wordless; the world lagged as spencer gazed upon you but desperately tried to avoid eye contact. every spot of your face, every imperfection had him speechless.
you had just graduated, masters in criminal justice and a minor in sociology from princeton. full ride scholarship, spencer later found out. (your writing was exquisite; very insightful. he looked it up in the hotel later that evening.)
it had been a normal day in the office, as normal as it could be. then, his world stopped when he saw you. after elle had left something in him felt sort of numb; maybe, you could give him a spark.
you sat in the chair directly to his left on the opposite side of the table. one elbow leaned on the desk, and you wordlessly mouthed words he couldn’t make out as the case was described. your eyes flicked over to him, and he quickly looked back at hotch. had you caught him staring, or had you wanted to catch a glimpse of him? he knew that this could maybe mean that you were trying to look at him from the same motivations that he was, enamorment, or maybe you had just sensed him staring like a frog at a fly: quickly, insignificantly.
the only issue was that it seemed you liked morgan.
las vegas, nevada was where the team was headed. being here reminded spencer of things, memories he didn’t care to recall. he noticed how you were hesitant to speak up, a feeling he had been familiar with a few years ago when he first joined the team.
the police station was incredibly stuffy, typical for the las vegas summertime. if you looked out into the road, you could see mirages. the police station had ac, but it was not helpful by any means at all.
spencer looked over at you. your hands were in your lap, and you were intently focused on something that morgan was saying. morgan was sitting on the table in the centers of the conference room, and you were looking up at him.
the stretch of morgan’s muscles underneath his shirt made spencer’s chest pang with envy. what did you think about morgan? was morgan your type? oh, god. maybe spencer didn’t even have a chance.
he didn’t see hotch approaching. “you find anything on the geographical profile, reid?” spencer blinked rapidly in an effort to clear his mind. he turned around to face the map that he had been leaning on. “distracted?” hotch’s eyebrows raised in what spencer knew to be amusement, though he was never hyper-expressive.
“uh- no. i’m alright. all the murders were in the same police jurisdiction, and all within a mile of each other. the focal point of these suggest that the unsub might live-“
-
you couldn’t stop your hands from shaking. this introduction could make or break your relationship with the bau team. it didn’t help that you were so young and inexperienced. hell, you were still working on your phd.
aaron hotchner guided you into the room and recited your name and qualifications. however, your eyes were glued to the wall right above the shoulder of a tall man, who had a goatee.
when you peeled your eyes away from the wall, you saw him. he had light brown hair, and starry eyes that were behind thick-rimmed glasses. one of his plump lips was tucked between his teeth.
once hotchner finished, you sat down paid attention as much as you could to the case that you were being sent on. baptism by fire, you guessed.
every now and then, you’d look out of the corner of your eye to look at the man in glasses. hopefully he wouldn’t catch you trying to memorize every freckle and line on his face.
you stayed mostly silent on the jet. you figured that you could mostly shadow the other people on the team before you got the hang of things. the chairs on the jet were not super comfortable; or maybe, you were just ridiculously tense.
you had only been to las vegas one or two times, and one of those times was just driving through. the police station was crowded and full of typical police assholes. that, you were more than used to. a bead of sweat dripped down your back.
when you sat down to look at the police reports one more time, you heard the table creak as someone sat upon it. looking up, you saw the man with the goatee from earlier. “so, where’d you work before you landed this gig?”
you exhaled a breath you didn’t know you were holding. at least he was being casual. still, you dropped your hands to your lap to fiddle with your fingers. “i was an assistant at a firm up in jersey,” you said, pausing briefly. “remind me what your name was again?”
“i’m morgan.” you followed by telling him your name. he must’ve seen you glancing over at the man in glasses repeatedly. he was raptly describing the geographical profile to agent hotchner. “that’s reid, if you didn’t already know.”
“that’s good to know. this morning was a little rushed.” your eyes trailed over agent reid. the way his fingers moved across the map with intense dexterity was enticing.
morgan chuckled and rolled his eyes playfully (even though you couldn’t see it, your gaze still locked on reid). “he’s single,” morgan purred, jumping off the table to return to his previous task.
you felt like a deer caught in the headlights, but morgan was gone before you could protest to what he was alluding to.
-
the case had gone by smoothly. but spencer could hardly even focus when you were within fifty feet of him. he was inexplicably drawn to you.
the jet was much cooler than vegas had been, and the entire team felt relieved. you were the last on, spencer quickly sat upright. were you walking towards him?
you spoke in a soft tone, “can i sit here? all the other seats are taken.” you clasped your hands together, likely out of nerves.
spencer nodded vigorously before he answered. he almost forgot to respond verbally. “yeah!” he said loudly. shit. he didn’t want to seem too eager, he might embarrass himself. “yes, of course you can.” this time, he spoke as quietly and calmly as he could muster while simultaneously scooting over to make room for you on the couch.
he tried to avoid eye contact. luckily, you weren’t even looking in his direction. if you had been, you might see the red creeping up his neck. you had a light floral scent about you, one that reminded him of simpler times when life was less hectic.
“agent reid, right?” you murmured. even though it was just his last name, he loved the way you said it, rolling off your tongue so smoothly and delicately.
he shrugged and leaned back on the couch slightly, trying to relax his shoulders. “doctor, actually, but you can just call me spencer.”
your tongue swiped your bottom lip before you spoke. “spencer. that suits you.” oh god, it did sound great when you said it. it sounded downright angelic; almost as if you were the only person meant to say it.
a silence followed. while being slightly awkward, spencer wasn’t too concerned about it. at least you were sitting next to him and not derek. “did you have a job before this one?”
“yeah, i was a lawyer’s assistant.” your voice was more soft than it had been. spencer looked over at you for the first time since you sat next to him.
“you like the bau so far?”
“how long have you worked for the bau?” you both spoke over each other; you turned and met his gaze. your eyes were beautiful, the lighting of the jet illuminating your face in a perfect way. spencer gestured for you to speak first.
“yeah, it’s alright.” a small smile adorned your lips. spencer wondered what they tasted like, before shutting that thought down completely. he couldn’t be thinking that about his coworker, let alone one he met less than forty eight hours ago.
you mirrored his gesture. “i’ve worked at the bau for a couple of years now.” what a dumb response. why couldn’t he think or speak properly?
his mind kept wandering. “you like it so far?” he whispered.
“yeah, it’s pretty cool.” pretty cool? who even says that? “just let me know if you need anything.” you gave him a warm smile and nodded. the way you smiled made him giddy and filled his stomach with butterflies.
-
being last on the jet didn’t work out well for you. every seat was taken, and the few that weren’t had feet propped up on them. in the back, you could see the couch still had space. perhaps spencer wouldn’t mind?
you walked over hesitantly to the couch. he didn’t notice you right away. “can i sit here? all the other seats are taken,” you noted, rocking on your heels.
he looked up at you, responding brightly. “yeah!” he moved over and spoke more quietly. “yes, of course you can.” there was a good six inches between the two of you, but it was as if you were brushing up against him with how your nerves were treating you.
small talk sucked, but you figured it would probably benefit you in getting to know your coworkers. “agent reid, right?” you recalled morgan’s anecdote from earlier, at the police station. it would really suck if you had somehow managed to forget his name in the time it took to solve the case and fly back to quantico.
“doctor, actually but you can just call me spencer.” shit, you totally just disrespected him. if only agent hotchner had properly introduced everyone when you were introduced.
trying to hide your increasing embarrassment, you tried, again, to be casual. “spencer. that suits you.” you should have apologized. not knowing what to say, you sat in the silence that consumed the rest of the jet. your knee bobbed up and down, you pulled at your fingers, and breathed deeply.
“did you have a job before this one?” he cleared his throat. did everything he did have to be attractive?
“yeah, i was a lawyer’s assistant.”
he had been looking at you, you realized. how long had he been looking at you and you were too skittish to look at him? how could you, with his gorgeous starry eyes.
in another circumstance his ‘interrogation’ would have intimidated you but, you only felt anxious from trying to impress him. “you like the bau so far?”
“how long have you worked for the bau?” the two of you interrupted each other. a laugh was shared and you relaxed for once, your posture looking a little less like you were constipated.
the chill of the jet was setting in; that, or spencer was just giving you goosebumps. he waved his hand in a motion saying that you should respond first. “yeah, it’s alright.” you actually really liked it (despite the morbidity, but that you were used to). but, you had to seem cool. chill, not like you were analyzing every thing he did and said to see if he liked you.
copying what he did, you silently urged that he was good to respond. “i’ve worked at the bau for a couple of years now,” he nodded as he spoke.
small talk did suck, a lot, but at least you were talking to spencer and not alone with your worried thoughts. “you like it so far?” you asked.
“yeah, it’s pretty cool.” his adam’s apple bobbed. “just let me know if you need anything.” you smiled at this, his comfort proving successful. the tension in your spine finally dissipated. it was good that you were at least on good terms with the bau member closest in age with you.

📚 Beautiful Books part 7.3: The Witcher Series by Andrzej Sapkowski 📚
This is part 3 of my Witcher books review, so before you go any farther, go read part 1 and 2! I'm going to talk about all 8 of them in a 3 part post, since I can't add more than 30 pictures per post. So get yourself some hot cocoa and a bagel because this might be long lol.
⚠️Note that there will be some spoilers from either the books, series or games so, read at your own risk.⚠️
Tumblr media
As you might know from a previous post, I got the 1st 7 books for my birthday from my dad, and the last one today like I already said, and they are published by Orbit.
7) The Lady of The Lake:
On the sleeve, we see a lady sitting on a rock in front of a unicorn on a purple background. Who is that lady? I don't know. Maybe the so called Lady of the Lake, or Ciri since she's holding a sword. The title is written in pink and I love the contrast over the purple background.
Tumblr media
The back, same as the front with a quote. "The legend grew, The listeners-in a veritable trance-drank in the carefully measured word of the storyteller telling of the Witcher and the sorceress. Of the Tower of the Swallow. Of Ciri, the witcher girl with the scar on her face. Of Kelpie, the enchanted black mare. Of the Lady of the Late."
Tumblr media
The side of the sleeve has a close up of the cover on the lady and the unicorn at the very top (or bottom), with white and black lettering on a pink background.
Tumblr media
On the left of the cover without the sleeve, is a purple spine and a black background with another quote, written in a shiny silver. "Destiny is hope being full of hope, believing that what is meant to happen will happen." - Philippa Eilhart
Tumblr media
The spine is purple with the title, written in shiny silver.
Tumblr media
And the back is black with the purple of the spine.
Tumblr media
The end paper is the same map of The Witcher universe, but with tints of whatever this colour's called for the details lol. In the light, it's blue but without lighting, I see it purple lol.
Tumblr media
The text is the same size in all 8 books, with the title at the top of every 2nd page written in black, with a total of 546 pages.
Tumblr media
My favourite part of this book is the colors. Purple is one of my favourite colors and everything about it is in some sort of purple shade. It's so pretty. *.*
Fun fact about The Witcher: Joey Batey (Jaskier) hates “Toss a Coin to Your Witcher”, because he heard it too much. It got kind of redundant after a while for him. But still one of my favourites. 💜
8) Season of Storms:
And finally, last but certainly not least, the last of the series. On the sleeve, we see our Geralt in all his glory, getting ready to unsheathe his sword, on a turquoise background.
Tumblr media
The back, same as the front, but with a bit of a close up and a quote. "But to blame mages for all adversities and disasters is probably an exaggeration. You're talking about natural phenomena, after all. It's simply that kind of season. A season of storms."
Tumblr media
The side of the sleeve has a close up of the cover on Geralt's face at the very top (or bottom), with white and black lettering on a turquoise background.
Tumblr media
On the left of the cover without the sleeve, is a light blue spine and a black background with another quote, written in a shiny silver. "It's good to feel fear. If you feel fear it means there's something to be feared, so be vigilant. Fear doesn't have to be overcome. Just don't yield to it. And you can learn from it." - Geralt of Rivia
Tumblr media
The spine is light blue with the title, written in shiny silver.
Tumblr media
And the back is black with the blue of the spine.
Tumblr media
The end paper is the same map of The Witcher universe, but in blue for the details.
Tumblr media
The text is the same size in all 8 books, with the title at the top of every 2nd page written in black, with a total of 421 pages.
Tumblr media
My favourite part of this book is the sleeve cover art. Geralt looks so determined in it. And I love all the little details of his attire.
Fun fact about Andrzej Sapkowski: Despite the success of The Witcher book series, Sapkowski originally found it difficult to support himself as a writer. But, the popularity of The Witcher video game series helped him become one of the best-known fantasy writers today. 💙
Final thoughts:
So there you have it folks. The complete book series of The Witcher. Such an amazing addition to my book collection. And they all look so elegant.
Tumblr media
The colors are so vibrant, but though they are beautiful, I feel like they just gave up on some details by book 3 Blood of Elves. There's no more illustrations from there and if you notice the photos of the pages from each book, you can see that they also gave up on the coloured titles at the top of every 2nd page. It's not a dramatic flaw, but it's definitely something I noticed and thought it was a bit unfortunate, seeing as every single detail made them look beautiful.
Another thing I've noticed, is the translation. It was originally written in Pollish, then translated in English and many other languages I assume. I know there's French versions as well. I've looked it up because I thought maybe, hopefully, I wasn't the only one, but it's a common occurence for everyone apparantly. Nonethe less, I think I'll enjoy reading them anyways.
I even went on and got myself some bookends. I wanted something that could somewhat relate to the books. Something elegant. I wanted something fantasy related, but I could find anything that didn't cost me an arm and a leg lol.
Tumblr media
Aren't they gorgeous? 😍 Goes so well with them in my opinion. I remove the sleeves because I usually always do, since they tend to tear easily and I don't like that. But don't worry, I kept them aside because the cover arts are too beautiful to throw away. I was thinking maybe I could frame them, but we'll see.
Tumblr media
Anyways, hope you enjoyed this 3 part review. Sorry I don't describe much, I'm not very good with words and descriptions. But the pictures are there so you'll be able to see for yourself. I'll also put the links to where to purchase them on the 💜 My Stuff 💜 page, so you'll be able to own them yourselves. They are truly perfect for book collectors.

I've been going through some of your posts about Geralt and Dandelion's friendship in the books recently because... well I'm back in my book/game phase I guess and I really wanted to know if there are any other Dandelion friendships you like from the books and why? Like him and Zoltan or with the other Hansa etc? [Personally I'm a big fan of what little we see of him with Regis and it always makes me weepy that he wrote a biography about him in the games and fondly remarks abt him smelling like herbs all the time]
Awww yayy thanks for spending some time on the ol blog. I absolutely love this question. I don't get to talk enough about Emiel Regis Rohellec Terzieff-Godefroy, and his relationship with Dandelion (for the newbies, that is Jaskier's name in the books) is so lovely.
Dandelion and Friendships
For those who are just joining us, Tea is talking about my series about Geralt and Dandelion's friendship in the books.
I have also written posts about Dandelion's friendships with Ciri and Zoltan:
Dandelion and Ciri
Dandelion and Zoltan
And for this post, I'll focus on Regis and Dandelion's friendship, which I absolutely love.
Dandelion and Regis Friendship (books)
What really strikes me about Regis and Dandelion, is just how patient and kind Regis is with Dandelion. Sometimes it is almost like he’s dealing with a child he cares about. Considering Regis’s age (over four centuries old), Dandelion (approx in his thirties when they meet) IS a child.
On top of that, Dandy’s personality is rife with traits often associated with kids:
insatiable curiosity to the point where he endangers his own life, (when they go into the forest or sea, Geralt has to essentially, follow right behind him like you would a toddler),
hyper enthusiasm about every discovery he makes, (he whispers in awe when he sees mandrake for the first time, that’s just how he reacts to everything new)
his inability to censor himself or stop asking questions even when everyone else wants him to shut up (he will ask until he understands, no matter the social cues happening)
the way he will act incredibly transparent and awkward while thinking he is being subtle and smooth
Perhaps that is why Regis seems to be so indulgent of him. And somehow their personalities just fit naturally.
Regis’s most annoying trait is to lecture people at length like a professor and cut people off who are asking a question, since he is too eager to answer it. The vampire loves to hold forth on a topic.
Dandelion’s annoying trait (one of many, bless, we know he can't keep it in his pants either) is to ask questions incessantly. In that way, they really kind of fit together.
Geralt loses patience when Dandelion is being socially inappropriate by asking too many questions. Geralt really values discretion and manners.
Regis is more willing to spend time explaining things and to open up.
Early in the hansa's time together, (before he manages to surprise folks several times over) Dandelion is often seen as the one who is in way over his head. Everyone else is a warrior or a soldier. Dandelion is the soft one. To add to the indignity, Geralt is angry at him during Baptism of Fire because Dandelion keeps forcing him to make friends (well, to ask for help)
Yet Regis, the new guy, is the one who always makes sure Dandelion isn't embarrassed or ashamed.
Here’s a few examples.
When Dandelion is given a bloody head wound by an arrow, the poet is howling and shrieking. He thinks he's dead already. He is not a stoic man. It is played comedically, but Geralt is also legitimately terrified that he will lose Dandelion. That bit is not played comedically.
But given the circumstances, the rest of them could be forgiven for rolling their eyes at the poet's dramatics.
But Regis (who is treating his wounds as the resident barber surgeon) does not.
Regis speaks to him so soothingly, and kindly. (I am omitting the Geralt dramz because I will get off topic lol)
Dandelion groaned and took a sharp intake of breath....
“I’ll put in a few stitches,” Regis said...”Be brave, Dandelion.”
Dandelion was brave.
“Almost done here,” Regis said, setting about bandaging the victim’s head. “Don’t you worry, Dandelion, you’ll be right as rain. The wound’s just right for a poet, Dandelion. You’ll look like a war hero, with a proud bandage around you head, and the hearts of the maidens looking at you will melt like wax. Yes, a truly poetic wound....”
And when it is revealed that Regis is a vampire, and Dandelion is afraid of him, Regis is incredibly patient and kind about the whole thing. He does not take offense. Geralt does! (Ironic, considering Geralt ran Regis off, but Geralt, bless, is dealing with a clusterfuck of feelings about the vampire and everything else going on in his life.)
But yes, after Geralt tells Dandelion about Regis, Dandelion is scared, and wants to seek reassurance. But the poet (unbeknownst to him it seems) is awkward and bad at it. He tries to bring up the issue with the subtlety of a sledge hammer.
Dandelion...deciding to clear up the uncertainty..began as soon as they set off. With his usual tact.
(I like that. His usual tact. Meaning, zero tact lmaoooooo.)
“Milva,” he suddenly called as they were riding, sneaking a glance at the vampire as they were riding, sneaking a glance at the vampire. “...I fancy eating a hunk of real meat for a change! How about you, Regis?”
Yeah. Real subtle Dandelion.
“I beg your pardon?’ the vampire said, lifting his head from the horse’s neck.
“Meat!” the poet repeated emphatically. “...fancy some fresh meat?”
“Yes, I do.”
“And blood. Would you like some fresh blood?”
“Blood?” Regis asked, swallowing. “No. I’ll decline the blood. But if you have a taste for some, feel free.”
Geralt, Milva and Cahir observed an awkward, sepulchral silence.
I love that. Awkward sepulchral silence. Dandelion causes a lot of those. But Regis does not dismiss him or laugh. He reassures him.
“I know what this is about, Dandelion,” Regis said slowly, “And let me reassure you. I’m a vampire, but I don’t drink blood.”
The silence became as heavy as lead. But Dandelion wouldn’t have been Dandelion if he had remained silent.
But Dandelion wouldn’t have been Dandelion if he had remained silent. (sorry I am laughing every other line at this part)
“You must have misunderstood me,” he said, seemingly lightheartedly. “I didn’t mean-”
“I don’t drink blood,” Regis interrupted. “...I gave it up.”
Dandelion doesn’t know what that means and keeps pestering Regis to explain. Geralt is embarrassed and tells Dandy to shut up.
However, Regis opens up around the camp fire that night. He tells his life story, and says he hasn’t drank blood in fifty years. Dandelion is incredulous.
“Not at all?” Dandelion said, and stuttered. But his curiosity got the best of him. “Not at all? Never? But...?”
Geralt is embarrassed again and shuts him down again. Regis, by contrast, is patient and defends Dandelion.
“I beg your pardon,” the poet grunted.
“Don’t apologize,” the vampire said placatingly, “And Geralt, don’t chasten him. I understand his curiosity.”
Baptism of Fire 291-295
That's right. Don't chasten him Geralt.
Regis and Dandelion also just have a wonderful dynamic of picking on each other.
Dandelion teases Regis about his long ass name.
And Regis has a great time teasing Dandelion lovingly. In one scene, Geralt and Regis team up to pick on Dandelion and the secretive way he treats his writing. Dandelion has stolen some paper and pencil from a Lyrian military convoy and is writing whenever they make camp, but gets testy whenever anyone gets near him or looks at his manuscript.
Geralt is good-naturedly giving Dandelion a hard time and Regis jumps in with such adorable relish. (Also, in this scene, we find out that Regis actually named Dandelion's memoirs)
"Indeed," the witcher joined in...."You've become devilishly touchy, Dandelion. One cannot fail to notice that it is somehow connected to the paper which you have recently begun to deface with a bit of lead while we camp." “It’s true,” Regis agreed, “our minstrel has become touchy, not to say secretive, discreet, and loving of solitude recently. Oh no, having witnesses when performing his natural needs doesn't bother him at all...His shameful secrecy and oversensitivity to being watched extends solely to his scribbled notes. Is, perhaps, a poem being written in our presence? A rhapsody? And epic? A romance? A canzone?”
He's like, you don't care who sees you piss and shit, but oh this you care about. lol. Tell us about the poem. But Geralt objects.
“No,” Geralt retorted...”I know him. It can’t be verse, because he’s not cursing, mumbling, or counting the syllables on his fingers. He’s writing in silence, so it must be prose.”
“Prose!” The vampire flashed his pointed fangs - which he really tried not to do. “A novel perhaps? Or an essay? A morality play? Dammit, Dandelion! Don’t torture us so! Reveal what you are writing?”
Dandelion says it is a memoir called Fifty Years of Poetry. Regis says that A Half Century of Poetry sounds better.
“Thanks, Regis, Something constructive at last.”
P 88 -90 The Tower of the Swallow
I admit I'm such a sucker (hehe no pun intended) for whenever Regis's fangs are mentioned, whether he is hiding them, baring them, or unselfconsciously showing them during a warm, silly moment with his friends. (Sobs, I love this vampire, seriously I need an intervention)
Regis also comforts Dandelion openly when the poet is doubting his courage or fitness for a task.
Later in the book, Geralt volunteers for a bloody job/violence for hire that terrifies Dandelion, so the poet protests the plan. Geralt insists he’ll do it alone.
But no! He has a hansa now! He won't be alone! Angoulême volunteers to go. Cahir says he’s coming with as well. Then Milva insists she is coming.
Dandelion freezes.
It would be like the LOTR ‘and my bow and my axe’ yadda yadda scene, but if there was one person left and when it got to them, everyone turned around and looked and they are just standing there frozen like....motherfuck this is scary idk idk wtf do I do. And the way this next paragraph is written, it pleases me.
Dandelion...was evidently struggling with his thoughts. And the thoughts were winning.
lmaooo
And Regis jumps in "kindly." He shows solidarity with Dandelion, and takes the heat by calling himself a coward.
“Stop meditating, poet,” Regis said kindly. For there’s nothing to be ashamed of. You’re even less cut out to participate in a bloody swordfight than I am. We weren’t taught to carve up our neighbors with a blade. Furthermore...furthermore..,” he raised shining eyes towards Geralt and Milva, “I’m...a coward,” he confessed curtly.
They keep arguing amongst themselves because Geralt believes they have been spied on. And Regis is just...always soft with Dandelion. When Dandelion starts guessing about who is spying on them, and is beginning to ramble incorrectly,
“You’re mistaken, Dandelion,” Regis softly interjected.
The Tower of the Swallow p 182
It's Regis's gentleness that just fuckn kills me. That's always the character that's gonna get me right between the ribs with a shank. (Metaphorically, Regis is too gentle for that)the one that lives in a horror filled, violent, cruel world and is still just kind, even to the loud, awkward, soft, obnoxious poet who is in over his head and is afraid you'll bite him in his sleep and who shrieks when he is wounded.
Geralt and Dandelion are so sassy and old/married with each other, deeply, proudly loving in actions, but always bickering.
It's sweet to see Dandelion have a friendship like the one he has with Regis.
It is so nice to hear that the games continued his love of Regis. (I haven't played them, so I get my info about them from you guys XD)
So thanks again for following me and for the ask! I hope I've done ok answering. I also love Dandy's dynamic with Nenneke and ofc Yen, but I'll stop there.
Hope your week goes really well. x

Can't speak for the latter half of the series, but "Baptism of Fire" is the silliest Witcher book so far. Barely any progress is made. Most of the book is The Gang bickering. There's a long scene where they make soup and Geralt is sulking in the background. Dandelion gets a bit hurt and he is being so brave about it and everyone tells him he's being SO brave. There's a vampire AMA that is mostly about the dangers of binge-drinking. At one point, the characters practically turn to face the camera to say "Remember, kids: the only person who gets to choose if a pregnancy is carried through or not is the one who's actually pregnant".
Definitely my favourite in the series yet

Hi! This is my first time sending you an ask bc I'm so shy, but I'm a huge fan of all your work! And it's so amazing to see a new AWAU part! Thank you so much for writing and sharing this incredible piece of art with us!
What I wanted to ask is, since you've introduced our boy Cahir Mawr Dyffryn aep Ceallach with his full name and everything (like he himself did, every other scene even though everyone had heard that introduction about 10 times already), are you basing Cahir's characterization more on his book counterpart or on the Netflix series?
And if you base him on the books, could that mean that perhaps in the future we might see more of Geralt's Hansa? Like Milva and Regis and Angouleme? (Angouleme and Ciri would be instant besties) Geralt with his Hansa in the AWAU would be so fun to see! And I think the Baptism Of Fire fish soup scene with AWAU Geralt would be so wholesome and also immensely funny XD
Regardless of your plans for the future though, I am absolutely frothing at the mouth to get the chance to read more of your work as always! Thank you so much for continuing to feed us so well over multiple years!
I must admit that as with many things, I am basing my characterizations on fandom osmosis, as I have still never read, watched, or played any of the canons.
That said, I would love to get Regis into Kaer Morhen - the shenanigans would be amazing - and if I can arrange for the Progress to happen across Angouleme, after I've done some research, I may well do so!
I'm so glad you like my fic!
