no but for real, thinking very hard about how Ellie was treated by the fireflies from the very first. like, canonically after Marlene intervened to stop the fireflies from shooting Ellie outright (though she MUST have thought Ellie would still turn), they took Ellie back to headquarters and handcuffed her to a radiator to wait until she turned. but then she didn't. and she still didn't. so after being infected with a disease that noticeably turns the infected person within a SINGLE DAY, the fireflies still keep Ellie handcuffed to a radiator for THREE WEEKS.

now, I'm not going to knock anyone for being cautious. one week? I understand, even support. two weeks? pushing it a little. I mean, ALL people turn within a day or maybe two and if girlie isn't showing signs of infection after two weeks, I'd suspect she straight up wouldn't. but THREE WEEKS of keeping a child chained to a radiator like a dog, taking all of her personal possessions (not just her knife, but ALL of her possessions), maybe giving her some rags to sleep on (there's something that looks vaguely like a place to sleep in the shot, but it's not clear), and idk a pot to piss in, I'd assume, while her only interactions are with gruff firefly members who ignore everything she says and treat her like an object even THREE WEEKS into this captivity is like. an unconscionably unethical way to treat a child. the one, single thing the fireflies ever did for Ellie was not kill her outright. but then they would have ended up doing it anyway down the line!

so the group effectively kidnapped Ellie, treated her little better than a dog, foisted her off onto two ruthless smugglers to get her to a lab, and then planned on killing her. It is jarring how much she was treated as nothing but an object to them. Even Marlene, who had sympathy and some kind of emotional connection to her, and clearly felt torn about condemning her to death, was not above keeping her in three weeks of inhumane captivity without even offering her so much as a sleeping bag to soften the hardwood floors
