Shawn buys a gun.

It’s a smaller handgun and he buys a compact gun safe with it too. It takes two days before gus asks what the metal safe is for.

“It’s a gun safe.” Shawn answers honestly. He wonders if Gus can tell he’s nervous. They’ve always been close like that.

“Okay… what do you actually have in it” Gus sighs. He seems to ignore shawn’s fidgeting hands and lack of eye contact. He’s sure Gus is mentally preparing for more Shawn hijinks.

Most days shawn hates his gift, the only exceptions being when he uses it to help people, this wasn’t one of those times. The memories of Tommy pulling out his obnoxiously large gun and pointing it at Gus were forcing their way in to his thoughts. The hundreds of scenarios of what they could be doing to Gus while Shawn was stealing that stupid car.

He trusted this guy. Shawn was suppose to be able to “see beyond the veil” and he trusted the man holding a gun to his best friends head. he was barely able to keep up his comedic act when he was making the trade off. He let Gus down. He got too close. He almost lost his best friend. If anything had happened to Gus-

Shawn’s downwards spiral is cutoff. He looks up and sees Gus’ concerned face much closer than last time he was paying attention.

“Shawn what’s going on? What’s in the safe?” Gus has his hand on shawn’s shoulder. He’s probably trying to reassure him they are in this together. That’s Gus, always by his side, and nothing was going to happen to him if Shawn had anything to do about it.

if one of them's somewhere, the other is either already there or not far behind, to lassiter's immense chagrin. shawn's present for and involved in the birth of his child. lassie ends up buying the spencers' home, his daughter destined to grow up in the same room shawn did. hell, before the two of them even met, shawn called in the blue sedan tip that led to lassiter catching the back bay killer — a large point of pride in his career as an officer — and let's not forget henry asking a newbie lassiter to take in shawn for the car theft, the one crime on his permanent record.

but wait, there's more!!! lassie accidentallies himself into befriending shawn's father, and then just when he's finding counseling that works, turns out his shrink is shawn's mother. oops! during the musical, does shawn ever dance or hold a duet with juliet? his girlfriend? no! but he does with lassie! they dance a hate tango!

i view Psych as a show about a man and the varying but equally meaningful relationships he has with three different people. with gus, that's a relationship of choice. they chose to be best friends as kids, and continue to choose each other over and over again. with juliet, that's a relationship of falling. they fell for each other so hard that a romance was inevitable. with lassiter? that's a relationship of fate, honey: something cosmic and unknowable keeps dragging them together, as much as lassiter kicks and screams in protest.

This may be an unpopular opinion but I don’t think Shawn should have ever told Juliet he wasn’t psychic if I was Shawn maybe I’d triple down on the lie or explain it away somehow eg ‘my visions were cloudy so I had to get more information to confirm the hazy things I was seeing’ ect

I’d never actually admit it even/especially to Juliet

(I get it IRL it’s terrible to keep such a secret but IRL there’s no coming back from two people with that level of foundational lie & reveal/fallout - IRL Juliet would have either turned him in or transferred out IMO)

I haven’t rewatched in a while but I was thinking about it & I truly think when it get a down to it Juliet was partly so hurt because she truly believed he was psychic

Nobody but Juliet believes him even if they play along & I think she was more hurt to find out that she was wrong/that everyone else knew & would then feel embarrassed for believing

Gus: actively helps sell the lie/deception - he’s a co-conspirator/accomplice lol

Henry: knows he’s not & disapproves but part of him is proud he’s at least using the skills he taught him, he helps investigatively not ‘psychically’ so to speak

Chief Vick: 100% knows he’s not but pretends to buy it because she wants plausible deniability & wants to use his skills to her advantage to solve cases & can only do that by “believing”

Lassiter: not just a sceptic/knows he’s not & for a while actively tries to expose Shawn & arrest him but comes to respect his insight even though he hates his antics & wishes they didn’t need Shawn so much because of how much he values his job & the rules of his job which Shawn & psychics in general don’t

Also I want to point out Abigail while not a main character is the only other real love interest Shawn had (from what I remember? I need a rewatch) & she didn’t seem to believe truly he was psychic but was impressed with his party trick stuff/personality but not his ‘powers’ + she knew him before his psychic detective career & the psychic part of his psychic detective career wasn’t an issue for them lol

Apart from the female front desk cop in the pilot Juliet is the only one who truly believes Shawn is a psychic I don’t even think Lucinda (Lassiter’s ex girlfriend/ex partner from the pilot) believed he was psychic even when she was in the ‘Juliet role’ so to speak

I think she just saw Shawn had insights/info they could use & was more receptive to help in general even if from a ‘psychic’ than Lassie

Buzz might have truly believed but he also might just go with the flow & isn’t a main character like Juliet is

But for real when was Shawn supposed to tell Juliet? There was never a good outcome

She met him when he was already working as an established psychic consultant for SBPD

Does he tell her pre dating? When she’s just started a new job & her partner doesn’t like him & she’d be more likely to turn him in to cement the important bond with her partner over the consultant who flirts with her? Not smart

If I was Juliet & Shawn had said ‘hey I’m the psychic consultant at your new job also I think you’re hot we should date by the way I’m a fake psychic’ I’d be freaked out/turned off & turn him in or avoid him

& it’s not first date conversation with all their build up to get to a date just to throw it away with ‘hey I’m not psychic?’

Imagine it while the waiter is bringing your food out all of a sudden you ruin the date/relationship/your career/open yourself up to criminal charges & drag your BFF down too because then what? No second date & no job

Anytime after that once the relationship is solid the problem of the relationship being built on a lie & waiting too long is in play

If Juliet didn’t believe the reveal wouldn’t have been such a big problem or not in the same way/intensity IMO

this is like really long so I’m putting it under the cut

it’d be like a supernatural episode but one of the funny ones or smth and Sam and Dean show up in Santa Barbara after a series of unexplainable disappearances (“this seems like our kinda thing”) and can’t figure it out so they go to a psychic and tada it’s Shawn and Gus

and Shawn and Gus are like “we haven’t had a case in a while” and then these two model ass men stroll in and are like “you two are psychics?” and Shawn’s like “nope just me” and Sam’s like “we need your help on a hunt” and Shawn and Gus do that thing where they glance at each other and then laugh over dramatically and Shawn’s like “what, are we gonna wear those silly hunting hats with the ear flaps on them?” and then Gus clarifies, still laughing, “we don’t hunt”

and Sam and dean like look at each other and then back at Shawn and Gus and are like “this is about those disappearances” and then Shawn and Gus snap back to attention and are like “oh yeah we heard about those” and then Sam and Dean are like “so will you help” and the Shawn and Gus do that bickering thing and then decide “yeah okay we’ll help”

so anyways they start the hunt and Sam’s like “let’s do some research” and Dean and Shawn are like “BORING” and so they split up where Dean and Shawn go to the crime scenes (“I need to see and feel things in order for it to work” or whatever) and Gus and Sam go to the library for Gus to look at records and Sam to look at the lore

but like this is the part I’ve been thinking about the most it’d go like

Sam: okay, you and Shawn take the blue car—

Gus: the blueberry

Sam: yeah, whatever, the blueberry, and Gus and I will take the impala

Dean: now wait a minute *pulls Sam to the side* I’m not letting Gus take my Baby

Sam: it has all the lore books in it

Dean: then we’ll move them to the blue car!

Sam: *visibly appalled until he remembered that Dean dragged him back into the life and they’re basically in the same boat*

Shawn: *gets call* *checks who it is and then doesn’t pick it up*

Dean: who was that

Shawn: my dad. he’s got a new girlfriend he wants me to meet but…that would just be too weird

Dean: hm

Dean: my dads dead

Shawn: oh

Dean: yeah *remembers that he basically has another father* hey you know Bobby Singer right?

Dean: oh *starts wondering what kind of hunter knows neither the winchesters nor Bobby Singer*

okay so maybe I need to think more about Shawn and Deans convo but like if we’re being honest they’re kinda the same duo just in different genres

and so anyways they’re like investigating we got Gus being really confused about why Sam is looking in the folklore section instead of public records and Dean being surprised by Shawn’s theatrics in deducing the crime scene and Dean and Sam begin to realize that Shawn and Gus are not in fact hunters but they’re being lowkey helpful so they keep them on the hunt

at some point while Shawn and Dean are driving Dean gets a call from Cas and they’re talking and when Dean hangs up Shawn’s like “who was that” and Deans like “oh that’s Cas he’s an angel” and Shawn doesn’t realize angels are real so in his head he’s like “oh so he swings that way a lot of things about this guy are clicking right now”

and so there’s investigations being conducted and the humor is that Shawn and Gus have to hide from Sam and Dean that Shawn’s not a real psychic (they don’t know he’s not one) and Sam and Dean have to hide from Shawn and Gus that monsters are real so hilarity ensues

and then the final big boss fight happens and Gus is like “why do you have a golden knife covered in blood” and Sam’s like “to kill this guy” and then Gus gets that calm voice that comes when he’s panicking and is like “um. excuse me for one second” and then walks over to Shawn and is like “Shawn, these guys are gonna kill the kidnapper” and then Shawn’s like “they’re not gonna KILL him” before glancing over and seeing Dean sharpening the angel blade and then he looks back and Gus and is like “oh my god they’re gonna kill the kidnapper”

and so Shawn and Gus delicately try to calm down Sam and Dean and are like “maybe now’s the time to call the cops so they can…ya know…arrest this guy?” and Deans like “nope gotta kill him” and then Sam like smacks his arm and Dean realizes that they still don’t know monsters are real so Sam gives them the talk

and he’s like “ghosts, vampires, werewolves…they’re all real” and Shawn and Gus just stand there for a second and then break into a synchronized celebratory dance and are like “yes we knew it this is incredible” and Dean and Sam are a little confused and concerned but hey at least they’re not freaking the fuck out

so anyways the final big boss fight we got Sam and Dean fighting all badass and heroic and Shawn and Gus cowering in the corner screaming that little girl scream they do and then it’s over and they’ve won and it’s wonderful

and it ends with them all outside the psych office and Shawn makes an obscure eighties movie reference and Deans the only one who laughs and then Sam’s like “if you guys ever need something just give us a call” and then some hot girl walks by and Dean is all googly eyes and Shawn’s like “dude you’re in a relationship” and everyone looks at him like he’s crazy and then he’s like “oh wait are angels real?” and everyone’s still confused until it dawns on Dean what Shawn meant and he gets all flabbergasted and is like “yeah angels are real that’s what I meant not…” and then Gus and Sam are confused af but Deans like “Sam get in the car” and they leave and Shawn and Gus look at each other and shrug before walking back into psych and it shows the impala driving away down the road and then the episode is over

I’m actually really mad at Abigail for this. Shawn expressed that his relationship with his father is rocky at best and that he didn’t want to drag her into it which is a completely fair and valid thing to want. And she immediately went behind his back and showed up at his father’s house to just chill with his dad.

Now, I don’t think she’s a bad person for this because I’ve met tons of other people with healthy parents that just immediately assume the kid has to be exaggerating that family always has to be forgiven because blood or whatever. “Blood is thicker than water” actually, good sir, the whole quote is “the blood of the coven is thicker than the water of the womb” so please, kindly, shut your cakehole.

However she was still definitely in the wrong. She’s dating Shawn to be dating Shawn, not his father. It’s nice to meet other people in your partners life, sure, but you meet them on your partners terms. I’m sure she’d be mad if Shawn went behind her back to talk to a friend she was fighting with. And it’s not different because Henry is “blood” it literally does not matter, found family is ALWAYS better than blood family. So, she had absolutely no right to do that and it was completely uncalled for. I would have been way madder than Shawn was if my future girlfriend pulled a stunt like that.

And about the restaurant scene, even if their relationship is “fixable” Shawn said he didn’t want her fixing it and her attempt at therapy only works if all the parties involved want to reconcile/work on their relationship. Also I could be wrong about this but Henry seems more interested in one up-ing Shawn/showing he’s better/telling the story about how he had Shawn’s life all planned out and everything would have been so much better if Shawn played along like the puppet Henry wanted him to be (I’ll make another post about Henry in this scene) than he does in actually fixing things which also isn’t helping.

Long story short, Abigail needs to butt out. She and Shawn have only been together for roughy two to three months anyway, my first ever relationship lasted longer than that. She should have waited to meet Henry until Shawn was ready, if ever. I know Shawn won’t cut Henry out of his life because this is a TV show but he could and Abigail would have literally no say in that and should respect it if she actually cares about Shawn at all. So the very least she could do is respect his choice to wait on introducing them.

And I know I’ve briefly gone over these quotes already but I was taking about how the thought process and actions were wrong, now I want to discuss the wording itself. So here we go:

“Well yes I said I wouldn’t pressure you, so I set it up myself and it’s been very interesting to say the least.”

Even outside the fact that this is a family problem she’s inserting herself into, that’s just plain rude. Yeah, I said I wouldn’t do this but I’m going it anyway because loopholes and technicalities. And maybe that’s just Shawn’s karma for doing that to Gus all the time, but that’s a problem Shawn needs to work on, not something his girlfriend should be encouraging and participating in. Not to mention he didn’t do that to her, he did it to Gus, so it’s not even a payback thing it’s just the both of them having the same unhealthy trait which will help neither of them in the long run.

“No, no, no, we’re just wrapping up, but we’re making plans for the three of us to have dinner sometime soon.”

Yeah, we, two of the people involved, are making plans for all three of us because I do not respect your boundaries. That’s a pretty big red flag right there. A breakup level red flag. Not only did she go behind Shawn’s back and meet up with his father despite her asking him not to but she then planned a get together for them all which leads right back into “pressuring” Shawn and therefore is exactly against what she said she’d do.

For the sake of not being misunderstood she does not have to not speak to everyone Shawn says he doesn’t want her talking to, she is her own person and Shawn is not in charge of her. However, he does have the right to ask her not to talk to people in his life, that she hasn’t met yet, because he’s having problems with them. And she should respect that because she has no prior arrangements with them.

Although I will give her a thumbs up for the “you’re not bald, you’re just a taller than your hair” comment, it was hilarious.
