Thinking about how Wade got his powers from Logan and, now that they're roomies, that Wade might let it slip out one day.
---
They're arguing in the kitchen over something stupid. Logan is slowly getting more aggressive with chopping the onions while Wade is up on the counter top, kicking his feet while waiting for whatever is in the oven to be ready.
"You know you should really get less mad at me, peanut. If you're nice to me, you're nice to yourself!"
"I'm not Catholic, so don't try to guilt me like one, and don't you dare play any bullshit pranks on me today or I'll give you two additional assholes."
"Well, that's more holes to stuff me with, so I don't see a problem with that." And before Logan can go claws out and make good on his promise, Wade uses one of his many signature moves: the 'Talk Real Fast and Confuse Them Before They Can Hurt You' special.
"WHOA THERE THINK OF THE BABY!" He screams while grabbing a ladle to jam between the claws and up against Logan's knuckles, keeping him a distance away. "I got a little bit of you inside me! Also, Jesus, we're not making pasta tonight, so I don't want any blood over the food. I won't be able to pass it off as red sauce to Al."
"She's blind."
"But she can taste color."
He groans, and instead of responding to the latter joke, he focuses back on the first. "What's this horseshit about a baby?" He sighs as the timer goes off, and he sheathes his claws to put oven mits on and take the veggies out of the oven.
"I'm just saying some doctors injected me with your DNA!! Not unlike good ol' artifical insemination -- except into my blood stream! Sooooooo, instead of a baby, I got healing factor. Ergo," he said as he booped Logan's nose on a the last word, "if you're nice to me, you're nice to you."
And what Wade thinks is funny banter, quickly turns into a sobering conversation as Logan puts the tray on the counter, not saying a word. Before hissing out -- "...What?"
You can see behind his eyes so many gears turning in his head, and he's not looking at Wade in disgust, confusion, or pity. He's looking at him in guilt, which is not what Wade wanted or expected.
---
So yeah it's all teehee chuckle fucks until Logan kinda has a melt down about learning that the freaks who experimented on him used his DNA to hurt others too. That's the hurt, and the comfort is Wade just thanking Logan over and over again that he saved his life. He's physically alive because of him, and he feels alive because of him and the stupid domestic life they've made together.

AHHHSHFBTKFNTLFKGNFMDM SONIC 3 TRAILER SONIC 3 TRAILER SONIC 3 TRAILER IM LOOSING MY SHIT RN
here’s some things i noticed/wondered/loved:
- i think in that scene where tom is on the ground yelling for sonic, he is wearing a special forces suit. maybe he upgraded from cop to working with gun?? if so i think that’s a really good use of his character actually! he wanted to save a life and raise a family above all else yes, but he still got his previous dream of doing more serious cop work!
- shadow just. has a big ass portal?? like holy shit he’s just suckin the life outta earth and ig that’s one way to do it (or maybe it’s just a ring and i’m stupid idek)
- i’m sure we’ll learn more about this in the actual movie so i’m not too worried, but i’m super confused at the very beginning scene. apparently sonic didn’t change his heart…but he did tho? like he learned what being a true hero meant in the last movie. tbh i feel like that’s enough but hey i’m not against more character development for our boy so!! (also that bit where he’s like “in my lungs” was actually really funny to me, ben schwartz’ awesome delivery caught me off guard)
- GERALD ROBOTNIK ALIVE HUUUUH?! tbh i would’ve preferred if maria was alive, i feel like that would be an interesting dynamic. but also ig that would make it harder for shadow to learn anything so i totally get it. anyways i’m just glad they’re putting a little twist on the story, it keeps it interesting. they already sorta did that with the knuckles and iblis thing actually! (even if that show sucked ass and although that probably wasn’t intentional 😭)
- even tho bro only got like… 3 lines, i really think keanu fits shadow. he’s very soft spoken in comparison to the rest of the case which feels nice. also he’s like the “really bad” guy so ofc he’s not gonna be yappin on and on like sonic or robotnik and he’s gonna take things uber seriously.
- where was my girl maddie :( i think she was only in like a singular frame. hope shes in the movie a somewhat significant amount. i heart pretzel lady!! could live without wade tho like pls im so sick of his bowling soap opera 💀
- FAT ROBOTNIK FAT ROBOTNIK FAT ROBOTNIK!!! after fucking 3 movies they finally fulfilled jim carrey’s wishes!! let the man get creative like please i love jim carrey sm aughdfhfnfmschxj. also love how we got so much stobonik content within that short scene like jesus come get y’all’s food
- shadow at one point says something along the lines of “when we’re done, there won’t be anything left.” maybe i’m reading WAY to into this but what does the “we’re” part mean?? is he working with others? i feel like this is either gonna be team dark or some new movie exclusive character(s). edit: someone made a valid point that he’s actually probably referring to gerald (look at reblogs!)
-CHAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lowkey wonder if the room therye in is like an amusement park or somethin like that
- no sign of amy :( but honestly my prediction now is that she’s gonna be the post credit scene teaser cus they always do a new character reveal there. first tails, then shadow. and honestly now i think it might be better that way so shadow can have a chance to breathe and show his story in full. i’m pretty sure i vaguely remember colleen (tails’ VA) being kinda mysterious about amy’s appearance when asked, and also the fact that it was confirmed that this isn’t the end of the movie franchise/universe. but ig we’ll just have to wait and see!
so sorry i stated this yesterday morning to give my initial thoughts but then got busy and completely forgot to post/finish it. and today i started (and am close to finishing) a very long edit of the trailer, so be on the look out for that too!
genuinely i feel like this movie is gonna somehow be even more record breaking than any of the previous movies and i am so here for the hype 🙏

Luca: Well…it’s the reason I haven’t reached out in a while, and I’m really sorry for that. You trusted me with your problem, and I kept mine to myself. I just want you to know it’s not that I didn’t trust you. I wasn’t in a good place and didn’t want to talk to anyone.
Wade: No need to explain - but did something happen between you and Sophia?
Luca: Not between us, more like - to us.
Wade: What happened, Luc? Did you get attacked or robbed or something?
I can think of a hundred things that might have happened to them, and I dread hearing them all.
Luca: Heh, I almost would have preferred that. We had trouble getting pregnant. Adoption was on the table, but we wanted to try everything first. She did several rounds of treatments, but they didn’t work. We later learned our chances were slim to none, so we did IVF, and that’s how Desiree got here.
This is not what I expected to hear, but my heart immediately goes out to him.
(Note: Dialogue continues below...)
Wade: Dude, that’s a lot! I never would have guessed…gosh - I’m sorry to hear that. It must have been hard.
Luca: Yeah…thanks. It was hard. Especially when… Nevermind.
Wade: What is it? Everything alright downstairs?
I can almost see the color drain from his face. Why the heck did I ask? I’m not his doctor. It’s a question no man should ask another man.
Wade: Luc…bro, I’m so sorry! I was trying to make a joke! I didn’t-
Luca: It’s fine. There’s no way you could have known.
Wade: Maybe. I still feel like an idiot. You know I would never try to hurt you like that.
Luca: I know you wouldn’t. I’m cool. I promise.
I crossed a line, and I know it, but to my relief, Luca seems to take it in stride. He surprises me by laughing but in a sarcastic way.
Wade: What’s funny?
(Note: Luca's, and parts of Dub’s, dialogue were written by @storiesbyjes2g .)

The First Time, Every Time: Fire
Rated X / 3377 Words / Posted on AO3 / Tagging @today-in-fic
Scully’s suggestion that he take her to lunch wasn’t a serious one, but he takes her anyway. He’s too distracted in the wake of Phoebe’s surprise visit to get any work done at this point, and he figures he owes her one after she single handedly solved the case while he was busy being mindfucked by Scotland Yard’s finest. He takes her somewhere just a little bit dingy with a full bar, the kind of place they aren’t likely to run into any of their cohorts from the Bureau. While they’ve never directly discussed it, he’s sure she’s aware there’s some gossip circulating about them, and though it’s entirely baseless, it’s best not to feed the beast in his experience.
He’s a little embarrassed that Scully bore witness to the power Phoebe clearly still has over him. He’s a little embarrassed to learn that, even ten years later, when she says jump he still asks how high, and then tries to double it. The moment she kissed him he felt like that naive college boy again, so starved for affection that he’d take it from the teeth of a snarling dog and then thank it for biting him.
He suspects that Scully only orders a drink so he’ll feel comfortable doing the same, though she reasons that she doesn’t really have anything else that needs finishing today, so it’s not an issue if her afternoon is a total loss. She’s actually a really good friend, now that he’s thinking about it. He’s only ever thought of her as his partner, but she shows up for him outside of work, too. And while he might have expected her to bristle at his moderately unprofessional behavior during the investigation, she’d only rolled her eyes and gently teased him, much like a friend would.
“So,” she says halfway through their second round of drinks. He can tell by the wry smile on her mouth that she’s wading into uncharted territory. “Would I be correct if I guessed that Phoebe ripped your heart to pieces and then told you to clean up the mess?”
Mulder cringes a little, but he’s smiling too. Not because it’s funny, but because she’s right.
“Something like that,” he says, then takes a sip of his drink. “Though I wish I could say it only happened once.”
“Ah,” Scully says knowingly, sitting back in her seat and resting the ankle of one leg on the knee of the other.
They both removed their suit jackets the moment they sat down, and Mulder has since loosened his tie and cuffed his shirtsleeves. Scully is wearing one of those ruffled blouses she seems to have in every color, the ones that have a rather deep V in the neck that’s made modest by all the excess material surrounding it. Sometimes he looks at her in her boxy suits and shoulder pads and thinks about what she looked like in nothing but her bra and panties under candlelight, but he’s careful never to let her see him looking at her that way. The fact that she’s beautiful is filed away in his mind behind more pertinent traits like intelligent, brave, determined, funny, and loyal.
“Pathetic, I know,” he says, looking down at his glass to hide the chagrin on his face. “And she just about looped me in for another round, if I’m being honest.”
“The sex was that good, huh?” she says, and he snaps his head up to be sure that it’s still his consummately professional partner sitting across the table from him.
She’s still there, the skin on her chest flushed pink with booze. She smirks behind her glass, perhaps a bit proud of her locker room talk.
“Depends on your definition of good, I guess,” he answers honestly. “It was pretty wild, and at the tender age of twenty-one, wild was as good as it got.”
Scully’s eyebrows raise curiously and he feels his groin grow just a bit heavy. He’s not sure how explicit of a discussion she’d be open to, but he’s interested in finding out.
“Are we talking ‘group sex’ wild, or ‘masochism’ wild?” she asks, just as casually as if she were asking him what classes he and Phoebe had together at Oxford. Mulder clears his throat.
“I think there was undeniably some masochism involved on my part, but more like high-risk or transgressive.”
“Transgressive,” Scully repeats with interest, her head tilting thoughtfully to the side. She doesn’t ask, but he tells her anyway.
“She, uh…she gave me a blow job on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s grave once, as an example,” he says, hiding his pride behind sheepishness.
A slow grin breaks out over Scully’s face, and Mulder feels a warm flush all over his body.
“Agent Mulder,” she admonishes him lightly, picking up her nearly empty glass and sucking the last bits of liquid off the bottom. “How disrespectful.”
“Yeah,” he says, looking between her smiling face and the table top. “I think that was kind of the point. It was hardly worth it, though. She broke up with me the next day with no explanation and she was sleeping with one of my friends by the end of the week.”
Scully’s smile fades and she holds her glass up, making eye contact with their waiter and gesturing that they’d like another round.
“Mulder, I’ve known plenty of women like her,” she says, her tone shifting as she uncrosses her legs and leans in. “She hates herself so much that the only thing that brings her any pleasure is to be pursued. She showers men with affection and attention, and then withdraws it as soon as she knows they’re hooked.” She pauses while the waiter drops off fresh drinks and takes away their empty glasses, as well as the remains of their lunch. “Men chasing after her, asking what they did wrong and how they can win her back, is the entire objective. Let me guess, if you ever call her out on it she acts offended that you’d define her character based on a couple little mistakes?”
Now Mulder sits back in his chair, disturbed by such an accurate description of his tumultuous relationship with Phoebe.
“Were you secretly attending Oxford in 1983, Scully?” he asks uncomfortably, then takes a gulp of his drink that burns all the way down his throat.
She smiles, pleased with herself.
“Phoebe isn’t nearly as unique as she’d like you to think, Mulder,” she says, resting her elbows on the table and then her chin on her joined hands.
“Well, she sure pulled one over on me,” he says, feeling embarrassed again. “More times than I care to admit.”
He drags his middle finger through the ring of water left by his glass, drawing slow, contemplative circles on the table top. Scully’s hand appears from his periphery and settles over his own, and she waits until he looks up at her.
“It’s not your fault, Mulder,” she says tenderly. “She saw a vulnerability in you and she took advantage of it. Having been on the receiving end of that myself, I can empathize with the fact that it’s difficult to see it for what it is when you’re in the middle of it.”
“You’re just saying that to make me feel better,” he says lightly, trying to reclaim the playful banter he’d been enjoying a few minutes ago.
Scully withdraws her hand and picks up her glass.
“I wish that I were,” she says wistfully. “Though I can’t say that my own youthful hijinks included oral sex on the gravesites of famed authors. I’m disturbed to learn the origin of your private joke, by the way.”
Mulder laughs, but he also entertains a mental image of Scully spread-eagle on the trampled grass in front of Doyle’s cement headstone, a dark-haired man’s head between her legs.
“Glad to hear you don’t think I’m a total schmuck,” he says.
“No, not a schmuck,” she assures him with a shake of her head. “I will admit to being a bit surprised by how submissive you were towards her, though.”
The comment was clearly offhand, based on her demeanor, but it hits him like an insult.
“Submissive?” he repeats, sitting up a little taller. “What makes you say that?”
She considers him for a moment before answering.
“You deferred to her in every respect,” she explains. “It was quite clear that she was in charge.”
“It was her case,” he shoots back. “Of course she was in charge.”
Scully holds up both her hands, palms facing him, in surrender.
“Forget I said anything,” she says. “We should probably get back to work soon.”
“I’m not submissive, Scully,” he says emphatically, ignoring her previous statement.
“I didn’t mean it pejoratively, Mulder; it’s not a bad thing to be. I was simply saying that I was surprised by it.”
“Well whatever you think you saw, you’re wrong,” he says sternly, trying to catch her eye.
Reluctantly, she makes eye contact and holds it for a beat.
“Whatever you say,” she says, acquiescent but characteristically skeptical.
Mulder clenches his jaw, holding back a tawdry remark. He waves their waiter over and asks for the check, as well as a cab, and then drains his glass. Fifteen minutes later they pile into the back seat of a taxi, buzzed to the point of uselessness as far as work is concerned.
“Where to?” the cabbie asks, meeting Mulder’s eye in the rear-view mirror.
“Alexandria,” he says, and Scully looks over at him.
“No, the J. Edgar Hoover building,” she corrects, and Mulder levels her with a steely stare.
“No, Alexandria,” he says again, and her eyebrows furrow.
“What are you doing?” she asks quietly.
“Where to, folks? Meter’s running,” the cabbie says, annoyed.
“Alexandria,” Mulder repeats, turning to look out the window as the cab pulls away from the curb.
He feels Scully’s eyes on him, but he doesn’t look at her right away. He makes her wait nearly two full blocks before he slowly turns his head and takes in the thoroughly confused expression on her face. Even then, he doesn’t proactively justify his actions like he typically would. He just looks at her, letting his eyes fall to the exposed skin on her chest and then dragging them slowly back up to her face. She opens her mouth and closes it, swallows, then finally turns to look out the window, and he finds himself fighting off a smile. He’s already rendered her speechless and he’s just barely getting started.
The cab deposits them in the parking lot of his apartment building, and after paying the driver he wordlessly heads inside, relying on his reflection in the glass doors to confirm that Scully is following behind him. In the elevator, he again feels her staring him down but does not reward her with eye contact. He behaves as though she isn’t there until the doors open on the fourth floor, at which point he gives her another once-over glance and then says, “After you,” in a tone that tells her it’s a directive, not an offer.
He follows her too-closely down the hall. Not so close that she could rightfully question it, but closer than is socially acceptable. When she arrives in front of apartment forty-two he reaches past her, key in hand, to unlock it, effectively trapping her between his body and the door. She stiffens but doesn’t speak, and when the door swings open he has to touch her back to encourage her inside. She stands in his foyer while he deposits his wallet, keys, and cellphone in their designated places, seemingly waiting to find out what will happen next.
He slips her suit jacket off her shoulders and she lifts her arms out of it, watching him curiously as he hangs it on the billiard ball coat rack near the door. He can feel that her tolerance to continue waiting for the punchline is waning, so he nods toward the dining room table behind her and says, “Have a seat.”
Scully turns to look at each of the three chairs set around the table. One is hosting a stack of books, one a pile of unfolded laundry, and the other a banker’s box full of junk he was planning to donate.
“Where?” she asks flatly, one eyebrow raised.
Mulder steps forward and grabs her by the waist, hoisting her up onto the tabletop. She makes a startled little gasping sound and wraps her hands around his forearms, regarding him with wide eyes.
“What are you doing?” she asks, alarmed.
He pushes even closer, so close that he’s occupying the space between her open legs, his hands still on her waist, and leans down as though he’s going to kiss her. She stays stock still, her eyes open, and at the last second he shifts his head to the side and brushes his lips lightly across her ear.
“Who’s submissive now?” he whispers, and he feels her shiver at the tickle of his breath.
He leans away from her, grinning victoriously and expecting to see something along the lines of embarrassment or irritation on her face, but she looks awestruck. Her lips are slightly parted, her eyes unfocused, and she’s breathing heavily.
“Scully?” he asks hesitantly. Did he take it too far? Did he scare her?
Her hazy eyes take a meandering path up his chest to his face, then narrow a little. Her jaw sets, the corner of her mouth quirks, and she reaches up with one hand to grab hold of the loosened tie still hanging from his neck. He opens his mouth in preparation to apologize, but she tugs hard and his mouth crashes into hers. Suddenly he’s tasting whisky and lipstick, and the heels of her shoes are digging into his ass.
Something he should have guessed about Dana Scully is that she takes no prisoners. The one time he attempts to come up for air with the intention of making sure she’s thought this through, she silences him with her hot little hand down the front of his dockers, and he decides that they’ll just have to learn to lie in the bed they’re making. She pops half the buttons off his shirt when she artlessly tears it open, then rips his undershirt off over his head so violently she just about takes one of his ears with it. She gets him down to his boxers while she’s still perched on the edge of his dining room table, fully dressed, and he realizes that he’s completely ceded control to her.
Her hands are just slipping under the waist of his boxers, preparing to divest him of the last scrap of clothing on his body, when he grabs them and pins them to the table beside her hips on either side. She looks up at him, panting, and smiles.
“Point taken, agent,” he says, his face inches from hers.
“You do realize that brute force isn’t dominance, right?” she playfully chides him, looking at one of her restrained hands and then the other.
She’s so sassy, a trait she normally doles out in bite size pieces, and he’d be a damn liar if he tried to claim he didn’t like it.
“What was your plan here?” he asks, grateful that the bend in his waist necessary to hold her hands against the table is obscuring the fact that he’s half-hard.
“I might ask you the same question,” she retorts haughtily.
A beat passes, and she runs her tongue across her bottom lip nervously. It occurs to him that maybe this isn’t just a prank that’s gone too far.
“Are you drunk, Scully?”
She sighs, her head lolling to the side thoughtfully.
“Maybe a little bit,” she confesses. “Are you?”
“Maybe a little bit,” he agrees. “Am I taking advantage of you?”
She shakes her head slowly. “Not yet,” she says, and something in the tenor of her voice sends blood rushing to his lap.
“Would you like me to?” The words leave his mouth before he’s given them even a split second of consideration, and the resulting flash of adrenaline makes him dizzy.
“Maybe a little bit,” she answers, her chest heaving.
The second he lets go of her hands so he can simultaneously kiss her and get to work unbuttoning her blouse, she pushes his boxers off his hips, leaving him nude. She doesn’t touch him right away, though she makes no attempt to hide her appreciative leering, and the combined pride and desperation bolster his confidence to the point that they quiet the little voice in his head that’s telling him this is a bad idea.
In short order, he fills in the details of her body that were previously hidden beneath white cotton. Her breasts are small but perfectly proportioned, and when she lifts her hips and allows him to divest her of her slacks and panties, he finds a full patch of ginger curls between her legs.
For a moment they just look at each other, her hands on his waist and his resting on the tops of her thighs. When he looks at her face and she meets his eye, he at once realizes the gravity of what’s happening and also that it’s already too late to avoid whatever the consequences will be. Nonetheless, he’s afraid.
Scully smiles demurely and tosses her head to get her hair out of her face.
“You’re not getting submissive on me, are you?” she asks playfully, though he senses that she’s a little afraid too.
He allows himself to get lost in living up to her expectations, almost like he’s playing a role. He’s the man who carries her to his couch and tells her to watch while he tastes the slickness between her legs. He’s the man who holds her hands above her head while he makes her come with his fingers. He’s the man who hands her a—miraculously—unexpired condom and instructs her to put it on him, and then he is the man who bends her over the arm of his couch and tries not to seem too proud when she gasps at the size of him and comes again within a minute.
She moves to sit on the couch, her legs wobbling, and looks skeptically at the condom still snuggly covering his erection, which isn’t waning in the least.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t realize you weren’t finished,” she says breathlessly as she pulls a blanket off the back of his couch to cover her nudity.
He’d hoped she wouldn’t notice. Diana never did. Or she didn’t care enough to say anything about it, anyway.
“Don’t worry about it,” he says, tugging the condom off and retrieving his boxers from the floor near the table.
“Are you that drunk?” she asks, mildly alarmed.
“No,” he answers quickly. “It just…doesn’t always happen for me.”
“Hm,” she says thoughtfully, and he wishes she’d stop looking at him like that. Like she might actually listen if he told her about the other ways Phoebe took advantage of his vulnerability. About how difficult it is for him to let go in front of someone else now. About how lonely it makes him feel.
He sits beside her and they talk for a long time. About nothing. About everything. About what they just did and what it means for them. Eventually, he does tell her about Phoebe. She doesn’t make him feel weak or silly, or express surprise that a man could experience that kind of issue. She’s empathetic, and angry on his behalf, and she doesn’t take it personally or claim to know how to fix him like most women do. The booze wears away and a new kind of trust is forged, and he gets the feeling that she might turn out to be the best friend he’s ever had.
When she kisses his cheek and slips her hand under the waist of his boxers, he knows that it’s not out of pity. She doesn’t touch him like he’s broken or treat him like a project, and he doesn’t feel any pressure to perform. She coaxes him to the edge and he trusts that she’ll be there to catch him when he falls.
He lets go.

‧₊˚✩ — clearing the controversy around the barbie movie and the modern expressions of feminism
note. this isn’t blind criticism and neither is it me just gushing about the movie—it’s my take on how & why the barbie movie affected its audiences the way it did + what we need to learn from the movie’s message. a bit long and descriptive though, so read at your own risk!
i watched the barbie movie in the theatres for the first time, and enjoyed it too—in fact, i loved how it handled sensitive topics such as feminism, depicting the cons of patriarchy masterfully. recently, i watched the breakfast mv by dove cameron, and was thinking along the lines of art and the modern expressions of feminism when realized the deeper meanings of the barbie movie, which most of the audience missed in the first glance.. don’t get me wrong, it’s just my opinion about the movie and everyone’s interpretation of art can be different. so, shall we?
first and foremost, barbie focused on themes of feminism and women empowerment, but what it actually depicted on-screen was matriarchy with an element of humor, not feminism.
now, what is matriarchy? in simple words, it’s the exact opposite of a patriarchy. a world where women have all the power instead of the men, and in all aspects—social, political and economic.
what the barbie movie did (initially, at least) was showcase a world where women had all the say, economically, socially and politically—since the barbies held all the positions in the government and had high-paying jobs, while the kens didn’t even own a house! and while barbieland fits the textbook definition of matriarchy, it wasn’t completely a matriarchy in the sense that it still appealed to the female viewers, and didn’t feel wrong at all.
what i mean by that is, that they did not challenge the viewer’s morals and make them really think about why this society wouldn’t be favorable to the men who watched the movie. instead, they focused on making it somewhat of a comedy for women, especially with the scene where all the male employees and the ceo of mattel were chasing barbie and america ferrera (if you know what i’m talking about). and by doing this, the movie again transformed barbie as a beloved character, even if only in the minds of the female viewers.
a good example of matriarchy, would be dove cameron’s breakfast music video, which reverses gender roles perfectly, showing us the cons of any gender being in complete control whilst spreading the message to the male viewers as well. while the main themes of the music video revolve around the roe v. wade overturn back in 2022, it also handles such sensitive topics with care.
back to the movie, while they appealed to the female audience with the humor, the male viewers definitely did not find it funny. hence, it’s obvious that the movie was made keeping female audience in mind, which is somewhat wrong, but the only way they could have catered to all the viewers is by showcasing a pure matriarchy. but doing that would, in a way, villainize barbie and put her across in a negative light. since that does not fit well with the general idea of barbie and her sweet girl next door image, and doesn’t undo the harm that pop culture inflicted on her (by bimbofying her, etc)... i’m guessing they scrapped the idea completely.
anyways, barbie has always been perceived as a popular icon of girlhood and feminity, so i guess it was never meant to be a movie for the guys.
in the movie, when the kendom came into existence, viewers were left frustrated (me included) with the scenario on-screen, what with our beloved character, stereotypical barbie having a mental breakdown when she realises nothing can be done fix the mess, giving up at last.
this scene (and america ferrera’s monologue!) highlighted why patriarchy was harmful to women, and the particular scene where ken said to barbie that they have a boys‘ night, every night, was the scene that made me realise the opening scenario of barbieland wasn’t favoured by men at all.
so i believe what our society needs is balance—where both the genders have equal control, again, in all aspects of life. and that, my friend, is what feminism is all about. it’s not about propagating a culture of man-hating and neither does it promote women to restrict men’s fundamental rights, in any way.
sadly, we haven’t achieved that dream yet, but hey! we’re halfway there already. women do hold important positions in our political systems, and get paid the same salary as men. and in some places, women are afforded the same respect as men too. isn’t that what you call positive change?

"Uhura's Song" review
Tumblr media
Novel from 1985, by Janet Kagan. I have mixed feelings about this book. For starters, if you're looking for a story focused on Uhura, this isn't it. She plays an important role in the very first chapters, but then she goes to the background, and doesn't have more protagonism than, say, Chekov.
Anyway, misleading title and cover aside, there are good things about it. The culture of the Sivaoans (some kind of anthropomorphic cats) is well fleshed and described in detail. Little by little, we learn a lot about this people: their social structure and rites of passage, the importance they place on names and oral tradition, their linguistic quirks, taboos and legends, etc. By the last third of the novel, when the crew goes on a quest along the main Sivaoan characters, we've come to understand and care about them. So yeah, as an exploration of an alien culture, it's alright.
But on the other hand, there's an incredible amount of filler in this novel. It's about twice as long as the average TOS novel of this era, but a great chunk of it is just pages and pages of the Enterprise crew doing cute things and playing with cats. With little development in-between. The narrative has a tendency to overindulge in the most insignificant events. Sometimes, after several pages of this, I'd stop and think "Are they really STILL talking about that!? It wasn't so interesting to begin with!" Granted, the main mystery is engaging enough to keep going: I wanted to know what had happened between the Sivaoans and their distant relatives thousands of years ago; and I wanted to know how they'd find the cure for the plague that's at the core of the mission, and what had songs to do with it. Those things kept me going... but with a lot of struggle to wade through the fluff.
Another problem is the guest character, Dr. Evan Wilson, who's not just a doctor, she's a... (insert anything you can think of here). No, really, whatever you can do, be sure she can do it ten times better: she beats Sulu at fencing and Spock at computers, she's a better engineer than Scotty, she's the best friend of everyone and is impossible not to love her (including the Sivaoans), she will develop a new vaccine and then kill a dangerous beast with a spear in the same breath, all the time being "super funny". Even when she's not present, other characters' conversations tend to gravitate towards her and comment on how awesome she is. (For those that get "The Simpsons" references: she's a Poochie, literally). But it's not just that she's a blatant Mary Sue; after all, a Mary Sue may fulfill an important role in a story, provide the plot or be the key to solve a conflict. The main problem with Dr. Wilson is that I see no reason why she needs to be in the story to begin with. She just steals McCoy's role as chief medical officer, and doesn't offer anything that couldn't have been done by other character (like Uhura, for example). There's some mystery about her identity, but its resolution doesn't explain why she's important for the story either.
To summarize, this novel has an interesting premise, but would have been much better without Dr. Wilson, and cutting corners on the fluff. If you want to read an actual Uhura story, go get "The Tears of the Singers" instead... Unless you absolutely need lots of cats, I don't know.
Spoilers under the cut:
The Eeiauoans (some sort of cat people) are being ravaged by the worst outbreak so far of a deadly disease: ADF syndrome. Sick Eeiauoans start losing all their fur, bend in pain, and in the final stages, enter a coma and die. At first thought to be exclusive to this race, the disease starts propagating among humans, and Chapel is one of the first to fall sick. So while McCoy battles the disease planetside, Uhura tries to find a solution in the Enterprise. She's good friends with Sunfall, an Eeiauoan dancer, and suspects there are clues about a cure, hidden in the ancient songs that Sunfall passed to her.
Thus, Uhura starts working with Spock to analyze the songs. Some of them seem to allude to a different origin for the Eeiauoans, as if they were colonists or exiles from another planet. And Uhura believes the cure is to be found in their planet of origin; one of the songs mentions similar symptoms as ADF, but unfortunately, the part about the cure was cut out. Speculating about some astronomical references in the songs, they narrow down the search to a certain quadrant. But the Eeiauoans refuse to help, or even acknowledge this extra-planetary origin, as if they were hiding something. Finally one of them, desperate about her sickness, confesses that the planet's name is Sivao, which helps Spock and Uhura to pinpoint the place. And considering how difficult was this search, and how vague the references in the songs, they solve this part of the problem with relative ease.
McCoy is left with the medical team in the planet, so Dr. Wilson takes his place in the Enterprise. Once in Sivao, Kirk, Wilson, Spock, Uhura and Chekov beam down to contact the aliens. They're very similar to the Eeiauoans, suggesting a common ancestry, though their language is a bit different. And unlike the Eeiauoans, they still live as nomadic tribes. They're amicable enough at first, but as soon as Kirk mentions the Eeiauoans and the plague, they become really hostile, and refuse to talk about the subject. Just as happened with their relatives, the Sivaoans don't even recognize the existence of the others. Nonetheless, the crew stays with them for several days, in the hope that they reveal something eventually. Uhura trades songs with the local bard, Chekov builds shelters and plays with the kids, Wilson befriends Brightspot (the local chief's young daughter) and Jinx (a kind of outcast among her people). They also discover that the Sivaoans have perfect pitch when singing, and perfect memory of events, so they don't need books. But although some Sivaoans seem to be itching to help them, they still can't acknowledge the existence of the Eeiauoans. Besides, a description of ADF syndrome doesn't ring any bells with the town's doctor.
Meanwhile in Eeiauo, McCoy has contracted ADF too, but a new treatment developed by Wilson before her departure can slow down the symptoms, though it's not a cure. (And there's a big mood whiplash here, since Kirk and co. are having so much fun with the cats, while McCoy is having the shittiest time of his life...).
In the Sivaoan village, the crew finally gets one of the natives to speak, even if she can only confess it to the tricorder: two thousand years ago, their civilization split between a technologically-advanced one, and a tribal one; but technology and urban dwelling brought disease and the extinction of several species, so that part of the Sivaoans was forced to leave the planet, and establish a colony in Eeiauo. The two branches have tried to ignore each other ever since, out of guilt. However, if the crew wishes to learn more, they'll have to undergo a rite of passage to be considered real adults for the Sivaoans. So the crew, together with Brightspot and Jinx (who was ostracized for having failed the rite several times) go out on a quest. They need to traverse a dangerous part of forest to the nearest village.
For the following days, the crew fights against wild animals with primitive weapons, survive a fall into the river, and must take care of Chekov, who has fallen suddenly ill with ADF. It turns out that Chekov was specially sensitive to the disease, and he will die even before reaching the next village. Then Uhura decides to sing again the song about the cure, but this time varying the pitch, in case that makes Brightspot and Jinx recognize it. Effectively, one of the variations matches a Sivaoan song about some mild chidren disease. This way, they find out that this minor disease in Sivao, has evolved into the lethal ADF among other populations. Chekov caught the disease because he was playing a lot with the cat kids. Once they know this, Jinx quickly concocts a cure with local plants, and Chekov starts recovering.
After finishing the quest, the crew is able to confront the local chieftain as adults, and several Sivaoans choose to go with them to Eeiauo, to help with the cure (among them, Brightspot and Jinx). Everyone is cured and vaccinated, and it's time for Dr. Wilson to depart. Spock, who had grown increasingly suspicious about Wilson, starts investigating her records. And he discovers she's not the real Dr. Wilson, but some kind of "space pirate" or benevolent trickster, who goes around impersonating other people and helping here and there... Okaaay. In her last message, Wilson challenges Spock to keep searching for her across the galaxy (but I'm pretty sure Spock will have forgotten everything by the next novel).
Spirk Meter: 2/10*. There's the usual mind-link between Kirk and Spock, so the latter is certain that the Captain's alive after falling into a river. Kirk is often amused by Spock's idiosyncracies. And one night, he wakes up from a nightmare, to find Spock's "reassuring form" next to the fire. Also, Kirk teases Spock saying that "some of my best friends are devious- isn't that right, Mr. Spock?" However, there's only timid examples like these. Compared with other novels, there's not much more.
A bit of McKirk as well. McCoy is reaaally happy to have Kirk back in the end. And Kirk comes to a sleeping, sick McCoy (who's cuddling with the cat kids; you know, the ones that carried the infection... WHY!?), and wakes him gently to tell him everything about their adventure.
*A 10 in this scale is the most obvious spirk moments in TOS. Think of the back massage, "You make me believe in miracles", or "Amok Time" for example.

Clear water surrounds her senses, lapping at her periphery in gentle waves. The scent of chlorine fills her nose as crystal patterns glitter off the pool's surface. Saria floats, suspended in motion, as the world spins onward. The sky is open and blue, gulls flying high above. Sound is muffled and breathing is slow. It's funny how too much freedom can be startling. But she's been learning to let go.
An hour passes, or only just a minute, when the sun vanishes from sight. Blue is obscured by blonde for a moment when Muelsyse enters her vision, sunglasses atop her head, pina colada in her hand.
"What are you thinking about?"
Saria answers with surprisingly equal lightness, "Nothing."
Muelsyse smiles in that playful yet knowing way, a gentle tug of a pale pink corner. "Good. Wasn't this a great idea?"
Vacation isn't a word in Saria's vocabulary. But neither was absolution.
She says quietly, "Come closer."
Muelsyse's expression softens a fraction. She leaves her drink at the ledge to wade close, moving in water with such ease that it's captivating.
In this moment, there are no other thoughts, no worries, when Muelsyse pulls her under.
Saria allows herself to sink when she knows her only chance of drowning is in those arms.

Sorry, I guess I just wanted to vent a little. To the void, probably (can't imagine anyone will read this. That's okay though).
Last month I had my consultation for bottom surgery after over a year of waiting. It went well, and they told me to start hair removal.
Since then, I've had to wade through phone call after phone call, online messaging through a website (the phone system for that was so bad I just did the messaging instead), and ultimately culminating in a department I had to email (yeah, I was specifically told they only have email, and not a phone number I can call), all to find out how my insurance will cover this.
The two things I need are a letter from the surgeon who told me to do hair removal (nothing he gave me qualifies as the letter I need, unfortunately) and I need to go to one of a very short list of hair removal places, the closest one being 2 hours by car.
I absolutely could go to a closer location and do it without insurance covering it, there is a trans friendly location the next town over, convenient. However, the price is nothing to scoff at, especially if I want to get anything more than just what I need for pre-surgery (other hair removal, such as facial and body).
The good news is insurance will cover the other hair removal too, but I have to get a letter from my doctor, or possibly two? The wording is weird, and I don't know if I need a second person involved, 2 letters from her, or just one letter because she covers both categories required for the letters.
In both these cases I contacted the surgeon and my doctor through the patient portal messaging, and it's been nearly a month now, with the only response from the surgeon being the clinic staff telling me they've passed the message on to the surgeon and that I'd get the letter when it's ready.
I have a video appointment I managed to get with my doctor, in a bit over a week, so hopefully I'll be able to make sure it gets done. But even if and when she does do it, that's not the letter that can let me slowly work towards surgery.
I don't expect me to be the only person who needs something from this surgeon. The fact it took me over a year just to get a consultation proves as much. But... a letter like this can't take that long, right? Every moment, every hour, every day that I spend waiting for this letter from him is time I can't do ANYTHING.
It's funny how long term bottled dysphoria, or even just... Something I'd learned to live with for a time, can just all come rushing back once the hope I can get my surgery is introduced. I know it's going to take a while, 1 year minimum, 2.5 years a tentative (ballpark) maximum. I can wait that, because it will be progress. The sooner I get hair removal done, the sooner that A: I'm free of the hair and B: the sooner I can get my surgery. I'll still have to wait after that, especially due to wanting a specific version of the surgery, but it will be progress. I won't be waiting to move forward with something I can do, due to a letter.
Maybe at one level, it's all just waiting. But tell that to my depressed and dysphoric self. I'm so close, yet so far away.
This isn't a cry for help or for money or anything. While spending money could sidestep the insurance issue... Insurance WILL cover it given time, and the letters. There are a number of people out there who can use money more than me. Transgender people needing money to get out of a bad environment, to survive till a paycheck. Palestinians, Sudanese, and probably others I don't know of right now. Please spend money on them instead.
I'm... While very much not fine... Fine.
Even if no one reads this, my thoughts and pain are out there now. Thank you for reading, if anyone does.

Hi!! Happy STS! How would one of your characters describe another one of your characters? For any ocs you want!
Happy STS (Storyteller Sunday)!!
I think the most interesting combination would be Parker and Gabriel on each other:
Gabriel: “Parker Cassidy is a lunatic. One of the most chaotic, reckless, careless people I know. No, he's definitely the most in all three of those categories. Never in my life have I ever met someone so impulsive. He's as much a danger to himself as he is to others. The only way I can sleep at night knowing he's here is taking comfort in the fact that he's not the pyrokinetic. Sure, Jazlyn can be reckless, but she has something Cassidy lacks: self-reflection. She knows when she goes too far and changes her actions. But that does not mean Cassidy's aerokinesis is not dangerous. He could suffocate someone, change the air pressure, or blow someone across the room. Not to mention his lack of self-preservation. He never thinks things through and makes 'humorous' statements at the most inopportune times. He's gotten in trouble more times than he can count. He's disrespectful, impatient, and has no regard for anyone or anything other than his own enjoyment and stimulation.”
Parker: “Gabriel is a hypocrite. Complaining about my lack of self-reflection? Pfft. As if he has any? He never learns anything it seems. He's the most stubborn person I know. Wade would call him 'static.' He claims I don't have any regard for others? Tsk. I have friends: Wade and Teo, namely. Does Gabriel have any? Like, before the Aequales, I mean? Not sure how anyone here can tolerate him to begin with. He's so boring! He doesn't like our Halloween parties and comes as the most boring thing ever. Like, 'a high schooler in a sheet' dude what is your problem?! Corrects our grammar, too. I don't even think he speaks proper grammar most of the time. He just likes to Be Right All The Time. Wait, did he call me impatient?! Holy shit, what is wrong with him?? He really cannot do self-reflection, holy shit. Gabriel is the most impatient person I've ever met. I cannot believe he said that about me. Every time someone is doing something slightly worse than him, he takes over! Because we 'aren't doing it properly'--go take a hike, Medina! Yeah, I get restless if nothing interesting is happening. He gets angry if things aren't going his way! How Robbie and Akash could give him a cutsy nickname like Gills is something I'll never understand.”
They set aside their problems for each other for the benefit of the group, but man, they get on each other's nerves. They hold it in usually, but in this particular scenario we'll pretend that they were asked by a third party individually and just had to let out a few years of annoyance.
The funny thing is, they're not that dissimilar from each other. As you can see, most of their problems with each other are flaws they have as well. What it comes down to is Gabriel's order to Parker's chaos clashing.

I'm ngl I've been dying to ask about them and I love when you talk about your characters so I was wondering if maybe you'd be interested in talking a lil about Lucille, Lihue, and Souta? I'm kinda curious about their dynamic but also just them as characters so it's up to you how you want to answer!! Thank you!
i'll talk about them independently and then their dynamics!! thank you for asking!! sorry i talked a lot not a little
lucille is a very others-focused person; if she has the opportunity to help someone out, she will. she enjoys feeling like she is doing the right thing, of course, but she also craves the praise and attention that comes along with it. she's very expressive and silly, which can make her 'funny' to observe, but she's got a different sense of humor than someone like souta; i can't really imagine her ever making a habit of serious jokes at someone else's expense. she really just wants everyone to feel welcome and like they have a place. her greatest weakness is probably her lack of focus and her need for external validation; she has a lot of ideas in her head of what she feels is right and what she should do, but heavily relies on the discipline of others around her to help with implementation and "streamline" her goals and formulate concrete plans. She's gotten better at doing this on her own with age and experience, though, so she's been able to be more independent and an effective leader. she's constantly trying to see the best in others, and their potential, so she can get caught down rabbit holes of situations she may be better off abandoning.
lihue is all about self improvement and efficiency. she hates wasting her time and if she's involving herself in something, it is usually because she feels like there's something she can learn from it. to her, skill acquisition is how she gains self-sufficiency; relying on others too much makes her uncomfortable and she has huge issues with vulnerability. she tries to approach all emotions from an analytical lens and can come off as insensitive as a result. while this emotional neglect impacts others, it has also impacted herself greatly; she is normally very decisive, but her reluctance to pay mind to her emotions has left an experience gap, making her hesitant, scared, and unsure in vulnerable exchanges she considers far outside her depth. rather than wade through her emotions, she holds others at a distance. this is her biggest fault, and something she is actively working on; despite her attitude, which can sometimes come off as if she thinks herself better than others, she is highly self critical, and she doesn't feel like she can ever do enough to distance herself from her past actions.
souta can come off as a "just here to have fun" sort of guy on the surface, but he's far more deep than he lets on, and he takes a lot of enjoyment in seeing others try to understand him. a lot of the things he says and does are to see how others respond, noting their patterns and behaviors, information he stores for use later. because of this, it comes off like he always has a reply to whatever is thrown at him--some detail said offhandedly in a previous convo? he probably remembers that. some nervous tick? he saw that, too. as you may expect, he has a teasing problem, which can make serious conversations a struggle to attain; sometimes, this is just him getting caught up in conversations he sees as games he can win, other times it is a deliberate effort to obfuscate since he does have, to a smaller degree, vulnerability issues like lihue. because he has no memory of his life as a human, he places a great value on his current life and works to carve out a unique identity and purpose; whether that past person was good or bad, he does not want to define himself or be defined by others as someone he doesn't even view as himself. he likes to maintain a sense of independence and control over his life--he loathes ever feeling obligated to do something, and he would rather everything be a product of his own choice. to him, that makes his loyalty worth even more, right?
OKAY NOW THE SEPARATE DYNAMICS
lucille and souta have definitely gotten the most time together. he finds her authenticity and self-sacrificing nature admirable and she's very fun to watch. she's expressive and doesn't tend to hide her thoughts, so it's instant gratification whenever he does something. i don't see him as someone who is super approval-seeking normally ( he's pretty confident on his own) but i think he is a little desperate (won't admit it) for lucille to like him and to find him funny. she was definitely the one most interested in learning about his past life / backstory. the attention was a feeling he got hooked on and got really into baiting, until the point that it began to make her overthink things and for him to start feeling not seen for who he was in the present. they both enjoy being around someone they can have fun with, so they can sometimes forget to GET SERIOUS but they have some good serious moments too (she makes him more committal and honest, he makes her more introspective, both start to think a little more long term because they want the other person there, ect). i didn't plan them from the start, and i only began to explore them after lihue had left. i think comparing them as lucille's 'options' is natural as a result. souta offers a lot that lihue never did; he's a little evasive when hes a tease, but he also doesn't hesitate to validate lucille when she needs it, and he finds her reactions as a result just as satisfying. his decision to follow her also means a lot to her; she's someone who values loyalty highly, and it is difficult for her to let people she loves go. with him, she doesn't find herself questioning loyalty or if he loves her, which means a lot to her.
lucille and lihue were far more planned early-on. i feel their personalities compliment more obviously: high extroversion vs high introversion, lucille is more head-in-the-clouds, lihue is more practical and efficient. lucille's warm and accepting, lihue is critical and severe. with them, i think a mistake would be to believe that lihue was somehow the more mature one. lucille is more upbeat, seemingly "gullible", and allows her herself more vulnerability, but this permission to feel isn't immaturity; it is an acceptance she may be hurt, but she'll take the risk because she wants the chance to connect with others. lihue runs from situations she is scared of and hurts people like lucille as a result. even as she learns this to be wrong, she feels she can never recover from what she has done. it's a game of lucille forgiving and giving chances, and lihue feeling she doesn't deserve the chances or isn't ready for anything lucille has to offer. there's some merit to this; lucille shouldn't have to tolerate being hurt because she is living for someone's potential, but she truly does want lihue in her life, whether it be as a friend or something else, so she's just working on being a good person and someone lihue can rely on once she allows herself that vulnerability. another thing with them is sorting through if you still like a person or if you like your memories of them, since they did originally like each other when they were younger, and a lot of time has passed since then; they are trying to navigate this as more mature people. definitely a big hurdle is that lihue's past behavior does make lucille paranoid about the future, but she's managing this by just being realistic with her expectations and accepting she can't control lihue, only herself.
well well well……….souta and lihue. souta does not feel threatened by lihue at all; he sees her as highly predictable, easy to run circles around, and definitely easy to poke fun at. he'd probably be more inclined to be 'harsher' to her than to lucille because lihue wants to act tough all the time. since she's so self-critical, she'd probably expect that he'd be more confrontational toward her over lucille (she deserves it right?) but he isn't actually. he talks to her about it casually or just makes small jabs about it, but nothing that would start a fight. serious fights aren't his vibe and he thinks lucille can voice her feelings herself. lihue might feel a little jealous that he offers a lot that she feels she cant. BUT BESIDES THE LUCILLE FACTOR. i did intend them to be friends early in the comic. they often appeared more as a pair before lihue left the team. lihue sees him as someone who is highly intelligent but who wastes his time on things that are too inane. she doesn't see the logic in his behavior and feels he wastes a lot of time on things that don't matter. like lucille, he's distinguished from lihue by his extroversion, but he's less silly; he's also a little bit more intimidating because he doesn't see the need to be careful with her. likewise, she also doesn't waste time sparing his feelings, so i can imagine their exchanges coming off as incredibly harsh or direct, and potentially off-putting to outsiders. i think they have a 'bite' to them which has its own appeal--i think she'd eventually catch up to his teases and try to be just as ruthless back.
i definitely have my personal biases for what i feel is 'best' for certain characters and what is most narratively satisfying (whole separate conversation), but i enjoy exploring them all and think they've got interesting drama. i think about them a lot. they have a playlist. i have songs. theyre always on my mind

Run-In
You’ve never liked being out in the open. There’s too many dangers when you can’t duck and cover at the nearest sign of something going wrong.
You’re quickly learning that there’s also things to fear with closed spaces. Though you can’t really call the swamp you’re wading through “closed off”. The trees are spaced out well enough, but that doesn’t help you see anything when steam rolls through the gaps, pouring from geysers and cracks in the ground. The water around you bubbles and hisses, intermingled with acid strong enough to eat through bone, and the air stinks of some kind of sweet rot. You struggle to keep your balance on the rotting log you’re walking on. If you fall, you will die, if you breathe too much of the air here without some kind of mask, you die.
It’s hard to believe anything lives here, but the trees around you and the not so distant sounds of wildlife calling and moving through them tell you otherwise. A few strides from where you stand now, the water ripples, and a massive catfish swims beneath you. It bumps the underside of the log, and you hear Icarus yelp as his foot slips, before Pantra catches him.
Your mother’s a few steps in front of you, her ears twitching as she listens intently. You recall the warning you received from the bronze blood you met in the village south east of here.
Smokebile Swamp. The northmost part of “his” hunting grounds. You didn’t know who “he” was, and the bronze wouldn’t say. The warning had been enough to put you all on edge.
There’s a clearing up ahead, just high enough above the water that the ground looks dry. You all decide to take a moment to catch your breath, though your mother never takes her eyes off the water.
Icarus chuckles nervously after a few minutes, and nudges your shoulder. “I grew up around here,” He says, laughing like he doesn’t actually think it’s funny, “Just Ψouth of thiΨ Ψwamp.” You tilt your head, asking without asking as to why he left.
“My, uh… my luΨuΨ died when the OrphanerΨ decided to Ψhift their hunting ground north.” He’s stopped laughing now, and something cold curls in your stomach. You start to reach for him, to say something, but he grabs your wrist, shaking his head.
“I culled the baΨtard that did it, and the other three are long dead now.” He’s more upset than he sounds, you can tell. You decide to leave it alone, for now.
You turn to try and say something to Pantra, to tell her to get ready to move out. She’s staring up at a tree across from you, trembling and you suddenly find yourself aware of a dull crunching, squelching sound coming from one of the lower branches.
You will never understand how you didn’t see him sooner. He’s massive, at least twice your height, and double that in length, with a mangled face and leg. His tail wraps around the trunk of the tree he’s lounging in, and you can see what’s left of the mangled corpse he’s tearing into from here. The realization that the body has fingers makes your stomach turn.
He’s a seadweller, and he’s staring at you, even as he eats. Icarus’ breath hitches as he and your mother spot him a second after you do. The violet blood eyes you, almost bored, until his remaining eye locks onto the gold blood amongst you, and he snarls.
He’s out of the tree and barreling towards you before you can blink. You barely leap out of his way, and he crashes into the water, giving you an opportunity to scramble in the opposite direction. You pass the tree he was in, and the sight of the small corpse being rapidly dissolved in the swamp’s acidic waters has you fighting back bile.
You hear him behind you, bellowing and shrieking in wordless rage. The sound of water sloshing tells you he gives not a single fuck about the possibility of getting melted by acid, as long as he gets to maul you first.
Icarus is outstriping all of you, panting heavily and refusing to look back as he leaps from log to rock across the swamp. You’re barely keeping ahead of the snarling highblood behind you, even on all fours.
Pantra has taken the parkour route, springing from tree to tree, and your mom is scrambling a step ahead of you, barely managing to avoid falling into the water.
Icarus darts sideways suddenly, scrambling up a steep outcrop and wedging himself into a crevice, you feel him snatch your hood and drag you in, your mother and Pantra following swiftly.
The ground heaves when the violet blood slams against the opening, snapping and roaring, shoving an arm in after you and flailing blindly. It takes you a second to realize he’s trying to pry the crevice open with his other arm, and you lash out, tearing open the back of his hand.
He falls back with an enraged shriek, before retreating into the water. You don’t let that bring your guard down. Instead, you look back at Icarus, who’s hunkered down behind you. His head’s in his hands, and you can hear him gasping for air.
“He’Ψ ΨuppoΨed to be dead,” He pants, looking up at you through tears, “I culled him! His fucking face exploded, I CULLED HIM-” Your mother grabs his shoulders, pulling him to her chest, and he sobs.
Pantra shivers beside you, and rasps something under her breath. You glance at her, and she says it again, louder, so you can all hear.
“That’s Dualscar, I think,” She’s staring at the opening, at the swamp, “He’s the Emewsary’s Hound, her Orfurner. My pride and I… we used to hunt with his mentors sometimes.” There’s a thick silence that follows, and you recall Icarus’ words from earlier.
“We’re in his hunting grounds,” You whisper, “And Icarus tried to cull him. That’s two strikes against us.”
A high, chittering screech echoes through the swamp. You see your mother tense, and Pantra grabs her shoulder. It sounds like a grub being strangled.
Some deep, animal part of you knows it’s not. There are no lusi this far north, not during the bright season. The sound rips through the air again, and Pantra has to drag your mother backwards to stop her from lurching past you.
It doesn’t matter. A second later he slams into the open again, this time managing to force his upper body through. He’s snarling incoherently, trying to grab at Icarus, who screams and pushes his back against the wall. The Orphaner ignores you completely, until Pantra slams a rock into his head.
He jolts, going quiet for a second before he looks up at your Matesprit, completely unimpressed.
“I taught you better than that, Cub-Kin.” The words are flat, and Pantra hisses in response, before his arm slams into her chest, and she slumps over, wheezing, “Dad taught you better too.”
He turns his attention to you now, grinning with a sudden clarity.
“Hello, bright-blood,” He rasps, about half a second before your mother’s teeth lock into his throat and he screams, lurching back.
He clutches his throat as he staggers in the water, growling and groaning in pain. Blood flows thickly under his palm, splashing into the water beneath him in thick streams. Your mother’s jaw is coated in blood, and she bares her teeth, still snarling.
You hear the familiar sound of electricity buzzing, but when you look back at Icarus, there’s no sparks. Dualscar is still grumbling in rage as you realize where the sound is coming from.
He lurches forward again, and you see the bolts racing across his body as he moves.
A sudden rumble in the ground makes him freeze. Your bones feel like they’re going to vibrate out of your skin, and your eyes sting with pins and needles. For a too long moment, the whole world feels like it’s rattling.
Dualscar eyes you like he still wants to eat you, but turns and slinks off into the swamp without another word.
You grab Pantra as soon as you’re sure he isn’t coming back, and haul ass out of that swamp.

As a follow-up to the previous ask: Geno finds out that he turns into a mermaid when he touches water and turns back into a doll when he's dry. How would that go for him?
Part one for anyone who missed it:
Seaside Gone Sideways: Swimming Lessons
The following morning, Geno convinced Peach that checking out the beach again would be a wise idea.
“What if something else is there, or someone came looking for the pearls?” He had asked. That was enough for Peach; mainly, seeing Geno so pressed over it made her feel bad for him.
She brought it up with the rest of the group, and Peach has always had such a way with words that it made it hard for them to say anything but “yes.” They began their walk to the beach in the afternoon after having breakfast.
“Ya know, star boy,” Bowser started, digging in the sand. “While we’re here, you might as well learn how to swim.” He started laughing. “Unless you’re too afraid you’ll float away!”
“Haha, you’re so funny.” Geno rolled his eyes at the king. However, staring into the water, he felt almost a sort of longing.
“Maybe we should teach you!” Peach came up behind the pair. “It’s a useful skill to have, and who knows how much longer you’ll have to use it.”
Ouch, Geno thought. He didn’t like to remember that, one day, he was going to have to go back up and work with the rest of the stars. But I should I least know how to swim before I go, he decided.
“You know what? Good plan, Peach.” Geno nodded in agreement and then smirked, knowing what was about to happen.
“Hey!” Bowser roared. “It was MY idea!”
“Oh well, star bits, star pieces, it’s all the same.”
Mallow and Mario sat a few yards away in the sand, and Geno thought he heard Mario laughing.
—————————————————————————
Peach waded into the water, and called out to Geno.
“See?” She asked. “Nothing to worry about!”
Geno wasn’t convinced. If there was one thing he was worried about, it really was floating away. Wood and water do not mix.
He slowly walked towards her and already could feel himself getting lifted up by the gentle waves. Geno began to feel lightheaded, but he chalked it up to nerves. However, once he noticed he could no longer feel his bottom half, he began to panic and stood still where he was, bobbing up and down with the flow of the sea. Peach had already made her way next to the star, and a look of concern washed over her face.
“Oh, for Goomba’s sake!” Geno turned his head to where Bowser was standing and yelling on the shore. “Not this again!”
“Geno,” Peach said, getting his attention. She waited for him to look at her. “You can’t panic, okay? That’s the number one rule of swimming.”
But by now Geno had already noticed the glow coming from the water, and he began to do the opposite of what the princess had instructed him to do.
“Unless you know how to swim with a tail, I think it’s time to start panicking!” He struggled now in keeping himself afloat.
“This is so weird,” Peach muttered. They stood, or rather floated, in the water for quite some time as the gears turned in the princess’s head. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, her face lit up.
“I have an idea,” she said. She helped drag Geno back onto the sand and laid him down. Mario and Mallow had made their way to the rest of the group, and Mallow wore the same worried expression as the day before. Mario handed Peach a towel from where they were sitting.
“Perhaps the curse—“ Peach took the towel and began drying off Geno’s tail, “—is based on whether or not you get wet. I think I read something like this in a book once,” she trailed off.
“Oh yeah? Like what? The little toadmaid?” Bowser noticed the looks he got from the group, but he chose to continue anyway. “There is no way in all of the galaxy that this is going—“ He was interrupted by the same glowing, and he stood silently when the tail was, yet again, replaced with two wooden doll legs.
“You were saying?” Mallow giggled. “Geno, you’re a real-life merman now! New superpowers!”
“I do-a have to say,” Mario started. “This-a could be very beneficial if-a we learned how to use it.” He scratched the back of his head in thought.
“Haha, yeah, no,” Geno said, still shaken from his back and forth transforming. “I would like to never do that again.”
“Aw, that’s lame!” Bowser smirked. “I thought you were cooler than that, puppet.”
Geno sighed. “I’m just really tired now, okay? Maybe tomorrow we can try this all again.”
“Yeah, Bowser. Don’t pressure Geno into doing anything he doesn’t want to,” the princess said. They all agreed to hold off on going to the beach for a while.
—————————————————————————
Peach taught Geno how to swim every day she could, and every day he got a little bit closer to success. It wasn’t exactly ideal; he could no longer just sit in a pool of water or stand in the rain without his cloak. But it was still something new, and besides, he’d never get to do something like this on the Star Road.

Do you mind if I ask your top 10 favorite characters (can be male or female) from all of the media that you loved (can be anime/manga, books, movies or tv series)? And why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before.....Thanks....
Hi! Sorry for the late reply, i started to write my answer and completely forgot about it. It's been in my drafts for months, i feel so bad omg! 😭 It was also really difficult to choose and i have only two female characters i am truly ashamed... But thank you very much for this ask, it was fun!
Here's my top 10! 😊
1. Mob/Kageyama Shigeo (Mob Psycho 100 - Anime)
I love him so much! I think he has the most wonderful character development in any anime i've watched! He has such a pure soul and compared to other shonen MCs, he just wants to be a normal teenager and be happy. So much growth and strength with this character, i love it! The series finale was incredible and I was so happy for my boy🥹
2. Megumi Fushiguro (Jujutsu Kaisen - Anime)
I think he's an interesting character with so much potential for the future. I love the way he always appears reserved and cold but he's actually a softie on the inside and how his own sense of justice contrasts with Yuji. He's just a pretty cool character and stronger than he appears to be and he cares so much about his friends. Haven't read the manga but currently watching season 2 so I'm excited about what's in store for him!
3. Dream of the Endless (The Sandman - TV)
New favorite character alert!! Not a surprise 'cause my favorites are always the cold and broody ones tbh I just love how Dream is so imperfect and still learning and his whole vibe, the long black coat and the emo hair like he's in a indie rock band is just chef's kiss! Incredible character on the show, so charismatic and mesmerizing.
4. Five (The Umbrella Academy - TV)
At this point, there's a pattern here. Maybe it's because i'm an INTJ myself, but Five seems like he's very INTJ to me. It's just the whole attitude and the way he calculates and plans everything, very rational and precise, sarcastic and (though pretty mean sometimes), exactly how i like my characters! All his scenes are top tier and his power is very cool (not explored enough on the show unfortunately.)
5. Minho (The Maze Runner - Book series)
The sarcastic character? Asian as main? Hell yes! Finally more Asian representation and not stereotyped! The book series would have not been as good without him! I was pretty gutted when he was barely there in the Death Cure movie, but Ki Hong Lee was so great as Minho, he perfectly captured his smug and smartass attitude that I fell in love with. He's also very courageous and loyal to his friends which I love too. Overall a very cool character!
6. Deadpool/ Wade Wilson (Deadpool - Comics/Movies)
Deadpool is just Deadpool... Bro he's just vibing killing people or whatever. He's completely unhinged, crazy, over the top and just a fun ride. Pansexual king! What else can I say, he's just one of my favorite comic book characters ❤️
7. Miles Morales (Spiderman - Comics/Movies)
Another comic book character in my list. Miles is a cool addition to the Spiderverse and the movies they made are just INCREDIBLE! The animation, everything is top notch. Also Miles is very relatable and has an intesresting development. You get attached to him quickly and he's just so lovable, idk he's my son, i stan.
8. Stiles Stilinski (Teen Wolf - TV)
Honestly asfghjkl!! I've always loved this character, more so when i was a teenager watching Teen Wolf. Looking back now, the show was not that good but at the time I was pretty obsessed. Stiles was everything i loved about a character: funny, sarcastic, entertaining, likable... He made the show a lot better and kept me watching! He's low on this list only because i'm not into Teen Wolf as much as i was back in the day.
9. Sana Bakkoush (Skam - TV)
She's so cool?? I wish i had been like that when i was a teenager, well for the most part lol. I really like her unbothered attitude and her snarky comments. She is fierce, not afraid to say what she thinks and is loyal to her friends and trustworthy. She's a teenager who has still a lot to learn but she's already wise for her age and just a good character overall. I really like female characters who are confident and charismatic! Her season wasn't perfect, but for me she was the best character in the whole series 😊
10. Sidney Adamu (The Bear - TV)
She's last on the list mostly because she's a new favorite, but she's very cool. I can relate to her, she's fresh and real, she knows her worth, she's courageous, hard-working and just very lovable as a character! Sydney captivated me from the beginning and her scenes were always my favorites. Haven't finished season 2 yet but I can't wait to see where her character goes! ✨
