#23- "What's cookin' good lookin'?"

ANBU Monkey paused in the middle of skinning the prey his Summon had caught, knife glinting in the light of their campfire before he set it to one side. It wasn't the words themselves that set him on edge but, rather, the droll tone they'd been spoken in.

"...rabbit and rations," he returned before, shoulders tensing, turning to look across at his mission partner.

Jackal was reclined on the slope beside Monkey, his torso propped up on his elbows and his legs crossed at the ankle; from his sprawl, he made the brown autumn leaves covering the ground seem like a futon fit for an Emperor. His mask was titled upwards, unrepentant, and a shadow from the fire had curled up in his clavicle. Even under the uniform and body armour, Jackal was all long lines and lean muscle. There was something so insolent about him now- no, not insolent, but rather-

Flirty.

Disquiet simmering low in Monkey's gut.

"I'm so tired..." They'd done nothing but travelling today. "Are you gonna feed me?"

Monkey turned back to the rabbit and, with a few practised slides of the blade, removed the last of the fur and made even quicker work of the offal. It was simple to skewer the available meat and rest them close to the heat to cook.

Leaves rustled beside him. Monkey's shoulders tensed even further.

"C'mon..."

Monkey didn't look up from his hands, washing off the blood with some water from his canteen; he felt wrong-footed and the normalcy of routine was comforting. The presence of his partner should've been comforting, yet-

"Jackal." His voice was quiet but brooked no argument. "What are you doing?"

A pause. Then-

Jackal pushed himself upright, shuffling through the leaves beneath them both until he could press himself, warm and addictive, along Monkey's side. He slung an arm around Monkey's shoulders, curling the other hand around Monkey's knee to drag a leg over his own and didn't hesitate until they were firmly entangled.

Despite himself, Monkey didn't try to resist the pull of physical affection and allowed his partner to adjust them as he saw fit. Only then, did Jackal reply.

"I'm tired."

Monkey turned towards him, so close now that they could easily catch the glint of human eyes behind the shadows cast by porcelain eyeholes. Their foreheads brushed as Jackal sighed, the arm around Monkey tightening again.

Monkey didn't question how Jackal could be exhausted when all they'd been doing was another 'contact free' assassination. Most of the effort had been in maintaining their hard pace across the countryside.

"...tired?"

They both knew he hadn't been talking about the physical strain of their current mission.

Jackal's chin dipped again. "Tired."

Monkey exhaled, long and just as exhausted, and breathed out a knot of something buried deep beneath his sternum. Still, discomfort for the breech in protocol was not so easily discarded.

"We're on duty," Monkey pointed out, his voice dipping towards gentleness. "No talking-"

Not always possible, but generally encouraged.

"-no faces-"

Again, only for eating or extremes.

"-no names-"

They were only Monkey and Jackal. Nothing and no one else until the mission was done.

"-and no connections."

Monkey and Jackal were partners, comrades, Squadmates. They worked as a unit, they defended each other and would die for each other.

They didn't love each other.

"Aren't you tired, though?" Jackal hummed. His hand moved from Monkey's knee to brush, featherlight, over the sensitive skin under Monkey's jawline, between mask and uniform.

Monkey couldn't conceal a shudder, both from the sensitivity and the touch itself. It tingled in his nerves, simmered low in his gut in a very different way from earlier. "Jackal..."

"We're under your genjutsu." His Mangekyou, actually. Monkey wouldn't risk being caught with a campfire otherwise. "We're safe."

Jackal was an assassin, a Tokubetsu, and a damn good Shinobi. He was paranoid and skillful and his confidence was extremely well earned. For all his personality beyond the mask, Jackal respected the rules and understood them, their reasoning and the deadly consequences of laxness. And yet...

Aren't you tired?

They'd been busy, even more so than ever in the aftermath of Hound-taichou's (forced) retirement from ANBU. Monkey, as the next highest ranking member of their Squad and now one of the top veterans in Black Ops, had been taking on more and more of the workload. Since Jackal often had so many solos, their time had been severely impacted. This mission had been a rare, slightly grim, opportunity to just exist in the same space, even behind masks. That Jackal had thrown caution aside for a while, whilst surprising, was understandable. And, fuck, but Monkey was too weak to push him away.

Monkey exhaled again, heard how it shivered in the autumn evening, and then reached to push his Mask over his chin. The cool air against his face almost made him feel feverish but then Jackal's mask was being shoved up as well and-

Genma slanted his mouth across Shisui's, warmth and home even in the middle of the wilderness, and it was a relief as much as a spark of excitement. Heat prickled in Shisui's gut as he looped his arms around his boyfriend's back and reeled him in even closer.

Monkey and Jackal might have only been partners but Shisui and Genma were significantly more.

Shisui lost time, eyes falling shut as Genma playfully nipped at his upper lip before sliding his tongue between Shisui's teeth, and just luxuriated in the closeness.

Until the smell of burning got a little too strong to ignore anymore, that is.

"Gen?" Shisui rasped, clutching at the divot of Genma's spine as the brunette twisted his fingers into Shisui's curls and dragged his mouth down to Shisui's pulse point.

"Hmm?"

"The rabbit's burning."

"....you're lucky you're good looking, fucking hell-"

“Go! GO! Shisui-senpai!” Turning toward the bleachers, Shisui spotted a petite girl in the front row waving her pom-poms a little too ardently, her long pink hair whipping through the air. The other cheerleaders had about half her intensity and vocal projection. It wasn’t unusual for the cheer squad to practice alongside the baseball team. Shisui just wasn’t used to having such an impassioned admirer—a strikingly pretty one, at that.

Akami celebrates her 17th birthday, her apartment is full of life, but all she can thing about is Shisui

“Hey Gai could ya get the door” Akami shouted from her spot on the couch.

Asuma and Genma were the last to arrive, seeing as Kakashi would just roll in whenever. “Happy birthday Akami.” 

“Thanks,” she replied weakly. 

This would be her first birthday since Shisui. She didn’t want to celebrate but she didn’t want to be alone so she embraced her 17th birthday. Asuma and Gai both brought her a bottle of sake. She was grateful this meant she could hoard her vodka, she’d started drinking since she woke up this morning. (With her coffee, in the shower, while cleaning. Last night.)  

She considered inviting Itachi but since she and Shisui ended things, Ended things?…he dumped you. Since Shisui dumped her she didn’t feel welcome hanging around Itachi or Sasuke for that matter; even if it broke Sasuke’s little heart. It was easier to avoid the Uchiha District altogether. If she didn’t go there, if she didn’t look at it, it didn’t exist. 

Gai proposed they all take a shot in her honor of course she wouldn’t refuse. 

“Happy birthday Akami! May your youth never fade!” she easily slammed back her shot, already accustomed to the taste. Tenzo made a face at the bitter liquid. 

Akami couldn’t recall the last time she celebrated her birthday, she didn’t like the attention and November 17th always made her think of Obito. After Obito died Shisui always tried to make her birthday special. When all she really wanted to do was sit quietly with him, knock back a few rounds. Well maybe that’s what she wanted right now. Shisui started to use Sasuke as an excuse, he would draw her a picture and make her a card. “Kami-chan! You have to have a cake!” “Did you make a wish?” “Here, I made this for you!”   When Sasuke was around she found it easier to pretend to care. She refilled her shot glass without offering and knocked back another. 

They started up a game of cards at Asumas suggestion. Shogi was his favorite but poker would have to do. Two rounds later and Asuma has taken 50 ryo off of each of them. 

“Come on it's my birthday the least you could do is fork over your winnings” 

“oh-ho, not a chance! You and I both know you wouldn’t do the same” Asuma said, reaching over to light her cigarette then his own. 

“You sure it’s cool to smoke in here?” 

She nodded in response but Asuma stalked to the window anyway climbing out onto the fire escape, Gai joined him.

  She had drained her cup after the first round but no one else wanted a drink. So she attempted to pace herself. Her thoughts were becoming clearer and she didn’t like that. Tenzo went to the bathroom and Genma followed her into the kitchen.

Akami and Genma had been messing around for a couple weeks now. The sex a welcome distraction. Shisui had ended things about 5 months ago but it had only been a month, 1 week and 3 days since he took his own life. Akami  wasn’t over it but when Genma was under her should could forget for a little bit.  Forget that they had been fighting for weeks before the break up, forget that he had been distant, forget how much she missed him, forget how pathetic she was. 

She’d taken on as many missions as she could get her hands on and trained three times a day. She couldn’t stand sitting still, it forced her to think. After Shisui dumped her she kept to herself, she tried to push down her feelings. She tried to pretend she didn’t care, but Akami was angry. Angry that she had wasted so much time on him, angry that she let him in, angry that she knew this would happen, angry that he left her too. She was better off alone. 

Akami was more reckless than ever. Starting fights just to release her pent up rage, snapping at clients, and killing people on assignments just for getting in her way. Eventually Danzo had to publicly suspend her from Anbu missions, as she was drawing Hiruzen’s attention.  

Danzo took full advantage of her current state and gave her every despicable task he could assign. Allowing her to continue in the safety provided by the shadows. And then Shisui killed himself. She felt responsible, guilt ate away at her until it turned to unbridled rage. 

The assassinations were getting sloppy, the corpses she left behind were mutilated beyond recognition. It was hard to collect payment when you couldn’t prove you killed the right man. Danzo let it go, until she almost destroyed their underground training facility in an attempt to use Art of the Eight-Headed Serpent; a jutsu she didn’t even know she could do (even if only three heads emerged.) She woke up a week later in the hospital drained of her chakra to find she was now suspended from missions and training all together. 

With nothing to distract her, she started drinking more. 

She ran into Genma who was also drinking away his troubles. Raido had been injured on a mission and he was partially to blame so the two of them got belligerently drunk and she stumbled home with him. Despite her best efforts at confidentiality, Kakashi figured it out...

HashiMadaMito+ - spanning decades, they raised Tsunade together, seen Madara rise to the head of the Uchiha, seen Mito become an accomplished author, and have seen Hashirama become a martial arts legend. The relationship is open on Madara’s end, as he’s their whore (affectionately)

A wolf whistle rang out across the bar, punching through the clamour and sending heads snapping up and around to locate the source.

Shisui froze in the doorway, mortification clawing it's way up his neck and flushing his cheeks red. It only made the staring worse; Uchiha were, by standard, distressingly attractive... flustered? Devastating.

Directly across from him, artfully slumped against the bar, Genma's mouth stretched into a wide, insufferably smug grin around the bottle rim resting against his lower lip. "Hey, hot stuff!"

"Oh Kami," Raidou hunched into his cocktail and edged further down the bar.

Dark eyes snapped up and locked with hazel-green.

A beat.

Shoulders tense under the attention and ears still glowing crimson, Shisui started marching over to where his two Squadmates had been nursing their drinks for half an hour. He might've been practised at ignoring the incredulous - and often appreciative - looks from those who didn't know Genma but it didn't make his natural reaction any easier.

"Raidou," Shisui called back with forced levity. Then, a little heavier, "Gen."

Genma didn't bat an eyelash. Or, rather, he fluttered them instead. "Well, gorgeous, how'd you feel about a long, steamy night of-"

"Pork dumplings?" Shisui interrupted, jawline flexing from the force of his gritted teeth. "There's a spot on the corner that's still open, if you'd like to grab a bite?"

Raidou was already looking like he'd regretting coming out.

"Shisui?"

Shisui might have looked great in dark colours but Genma was something else in that thin mesh top, trousers riding - intentionally - low on his hips. It was a struggle to keep his eyes on Genma's face, but the effort was made easier by the knowledge that Genma was doing all of this on purpose.

"Yes?" Shisui replied, breathing through his nose and flashing a warm, confident smile. Genma wasn't winning this round.

"It it really a dumpling you want to set your teeth-"

"No!" Raidou had had enough. Even shouldering a few feet of space between himself and the other two evidently wasn't enough. His face was twisted with resignation and annoyance, drink cradled like a shield to his chest. "I can't keep doing this, I fucking refuse. You-!"

He jutted his chin in Genma's direction. "Stop inviting me out for drinks only to play this song and dance every damn time! And you!"

Raidou's attention swung around to fixate on Shisui, who's eyebrows jumped up his forehead, bashfulness forgotten. "Stop playing along! Both of you, just go on dates like normal people and stop ruining my cocktail!"

Raidou could get very protective of his free time.

Genma wasn't helping things by smirking into his beer, slanting a loaded look at Shisui from the corner of his eye. "Rai, c'mon-"

Shisui stepped forwards, angled to hiding Genma's laughter behind his shoulder, and flashed an apologetic smile at their Squadmate. "Sorry about that, senpai, we'll leave you to it? Have a good night."

Then, without lingering to push his luck, Shisui wrapped a hand around Genma's bicep and tugged him to a free spot, hidden behind a pillar and in the shadows cast by a nearby lantern.

"So much for buying a guy a meal first," Genma drawled, letting Shisui back himself against the pillar and pull him in afterwards. "I'll have you know, I'm a classy guy."

"Gen," Shisui pressed his mouth to his boyfriend's neck in order to muffle his laughter, "you're shameless, Raidou was going to dump that whole thing on your head-"

"...You'd've thought he'd know us better by now."

"Why on earth did I let you convince me that this is funny?"

"Easy. It's not funny, it's hilarious."

"My uncle is going to hear about us again and then he'll find a reason to cite public indecency just because I'm embarrassing the Clan name-"

"It's not like he's never seen us really get going-"

Shisui only put a stop to the giggles by catching Genma's laugh with his mouth, humor fading as heat sank between them. In fact, it worked a little too well and it was only when Genma instinctively shifted away from an unsteady civilian that they broke apart.

Genma didn't go very far, curling his hands around Shisui's hips and clawing his fingers so that even his short nails pricked into Shisui's skin. "Why don't we stop kidding ourselves and go back to mine, Babe?"

Shisui chuckled, red gleaming briefly behind his dark eyes, and trailed his nose across Genma's cheek until his mouth met his boyfriend's ear.

"Kidding ourselves? Gen, you're the one who insists on 'picking me up' every date night."

Genma laughed again, throaty in a different way than he'd been that morning when they'd made breakfast in Shisui's kitchen.

"What can I say? I'm a man who knows what he wants."
