I know we make fun of odysseus for getting so lost on his trip home but like guys do you think he had maps of (to the acheans) uncharted, unexplored, and unknown waters??
#the odyssey#Odysseus#Putting aside the fact that they were blown off course because of the gods#Both because of pissing them off and because they were playing barbies with odysseus as the favorite doll#And the fact that it was fated#Where's that picture of the map of odysseus's travels?#Didn't he end up in like France at one point?#Did he have a map of the French waters??? I think not#Unless Athena was like hey I'm totally a normal guy in the middle of the sea here's a map my favorite guy ...I mean random stranger#Which honestly she did that enough times with other things for odysseus and his family she might have 50/50 chance#Okay but funny version of this odysseus frantically making a shitty copy of a map in the middle of the night being like#OF COURSE I know where we are eurylochus why would you even ASK me that HOW DARE YOU ATHENA HELP

i genuinely don't think a story's worldbuilding and lore has ever drawn me in the way that check please did. it's been years and i still think about it every day. the characters and plot were always superb but i think what has stuck with me the most is the depth of the settings and how everything feels so lived in and tangible. everyone wants to make a fake world and town and university but no one else has EVER done it that well
#like the college setting especially is so delicious to me#there isn't a day that goes by that i don't think about the campus map and the building names and the haus and the stop and shops#ugh i need hardcore analysis injected into my damn veins#also this could be it's own post. but#the generations of players and how every fan has different people that really speak to them#like i'm not a huge kent/tater or dex/nursey fan and honestly am pretty ambivalent to jack/bitty#(don't take this the wrong way)#but i LOVE ransom and holster and shitty and lardo#and even some of the other characters like bully and tango though i admit the later years don't hit as hard for me as the first couple#i just love that everyone finds something to go batshit over#the attention to detail was just so so incredible and still for SURE holds up#no matter what aspect#i was never super directly involved in the fandom but when i think back on formative pieces of media for me as a person and as a writer#i don't think that there are many things that compare#if you've read my writing i don't think it's hard to see the correlation at all#also if you want to talk check please analysis (or can rec me others' analysis!!!) i'd be forever grateful#otherwise i'm just going to keep marinating forever#omgcp#check please#omg check please

netflix one piece live action feels a little like fanfic in that it makes sure it hits all the important notes but doesnt do all the work to make them hit which works in fic where the reader is supposed to bring all the emotional story investment from the original but doesnt work in a multi million adaptation that is supposed to be able to stand on its own or even serve as an intro to the series. it even does this in service to have more koby and helmeppo gay moments in this essay i w
#one piece#opla#the fleshing out of koby and helmeppo is like honestly good its a beacon of light its truly really fun#and all the actors are great it is just what they are given .#they didnt let nami do any real betraying. they didnt even have her steal the merry!! she just stole the map that they added in!!!!#ddont get me started on the gutting of sanjis intro. i dont give a shit about if don krieg appears or not i need to see this guy fuckin#feed the hand thats about to kill him im going to start shaking like a dog.#im almost madder krieg appeared for just a little id rather have that time be used for. anything else really.#like have one of arlongs guys starved half to death when they get to arlong park!or idk anything! no gin appears look its gin! you know him#sanji doesnt even get to beat the shit out of a shitty guest. like i guess he does a little but it feels so blink and you miss it#+the first like two eps were good!! buggys great hes scary and weird and fun. i dont mind that he sticks around longer in theory#but the way he is comedic relief instead of basically every character having funny bits is like. ahghhhgggg. its a symptom of this really#mean and edgy feeling the whole thing has. like the removal of people missing usopps pirate calling :( and how cocoyashi didnt know#nami was working to help them. like p. please. can we have caring and bonds in this world?? trust and love???#anyway. sorry for having expectations of a netflix show im so close to putting this into a more proper form rather than tags. just to get i#all out of my system cause fuck man.#anyway solid 7/10 not as bad as it couldve been

one other game mechanic I like about Tactics Ogre is that like, most of the map objectives are just "kill this one character" and not like, "rout the enemy" and BECAUSE exp is gained from clearing the map and not by individual enemy defeats, I can just make a beeline for the boss and kill them, which is saving me so much time. I did NOT realize how much time I spent routing maps in other trpgs for max exp gains even when routing was not the objective
on a side note I do like that all the minor enemy bosses have like, entire paragraphs of backstory in the Warren Report. Really helps to make the "this is a war and regular-ass people with lives are getting caught up and killed in it and leaving families behind" theme shine through. Actually makes the game feel like a morally grey narrative.
(story spoilers under the cut)
I don't know what was more wild about Xapan showing up the second time--the fact that he was there w/ two dragons that I so very badly wanted but knew I wasn't going to be able to recruit, or the fact that when I went through his team trying to figure out who to try and use the recruit skill on for the quest bonus apparently every single member of his team was Very Favorable to Denam even if I couldn't recruit them (which I then forgot to do anyhow so I didn't get the light charm or whatever).
Honestly, Xapan would have loony-toon villain vibes if it weren't for the overall serious tone of the game and him fucking RUNNING OFF WITH CATIUA at the end. Anyhow the level cap got upped, so time to go level-grind a bit in that uh, forest area with the name (sorry Catiua, I WILL save you but I started the map w/out realizing the level cap had been increased and literally the target characters are lv20 and my team is only lv17).
Because the map setup was less than favorable (something I knew when I couldn't scout the map ahead of time), I knew I wouldn't get those light and dark dragons in Rhime, but damn...they were apparently very favorable towards Denam.
#anyhow I DO have one dragon and one gryphon now but I want like. All The Dragons#the light and dark dragons are SO cool looking I want 'em so badly#this game's shitty 20% recruit/tame rate is NOT going to stop me from getting at least one of most of the monsters#honestly more than anything being able to deploy a monster units on the map is like ridiculously fun to me#oracle of lore

SOFT SPOT: CHAPTER 10
paige x azzi
word count: 9.1k
a/n: my sleep schedule has been shitty as hell so i don’t even remember writing half of this honestly. so sorry it took so long. feel free to let me know if there’s anything specific you’d like to see in the series or any comments you have! if they’re any mistakes please let me know :)
—————————————————————————
For about two weeks, all Paige and Azzi did was orbit around each other. They were tangled in quiet routines that they created for themselves, mixed with the perfect amount of chaotic affection. Days melted into nights with no clear beginning or end, the rhythm they’d set with each other was the only thing that seemed to matter.
Azzi managed to do a few basketball workouts here and there. Small things just to keep her body moving and active during her break. During one of them, she surprisingly discovered that Paige could actually hoop. She wasn’t flashy about it, but she moved with a gracefulness when she had the ball in her hand. Azzi had grinned at her from across the gym, a little breathless from her own workout. Paige had just smirked at her before dribbling the ball between her legs and looking away.
Grocery store trips turned into adventures, Azzi throwing random snacks in the cart just to see what Paige would veto or complain about. They cooked shoulder to shoulder in the kitchen, feeding bites of food from each other’s plates and slow dancing to whatever playlist was echoing through the house. Azzi always cooked what she knew Paige preferred to eat and Paige always forced Azzi to sit down while she cleaned.
And of course mixed in with their new found domestication they were all over each other constantly. The kitchen counter, the couch, the shower, the floor that one time they drunkenly didn’t make it to the bed, in front of the fireplace, the laundry room table. It didn’t matter where they were or what time it was. If Azzi looked at Paige a certain way, that was all it took and well...Azzi was always looking at Paige a certain way.
In those two weeks Azzi discovered something soft, something she didn’t know she craved until it was in front of her. Paige had a protector’s heart, and Azzi loved every second of it.
Paige always slept on the side of the bed closest to the door; Azzi learned the hard way when Paige pushed her to the other side of the bed in the middle of REM sleep the night she had gone to bed before her. Paige unlocked the car for Azzi first, waiting until Azzi was inside before locking the door back and walking around to the driver’s side. She always chose a seat with a clear view of the exit, her posture relaxed and attuned to what Azzi was saying but always somehow alert. Azzi noticed how Paige would subtly angle herself toward her when they walked through crowds, or how Paige’s hand would naturally rest on her lower back gently leading her.
Azzi had her own small habits too. She folded Paige’s laundry in the meticulous way Paige liked it—T-shirts rolled, not folded. She helped Paige wash her hair when she complained about having to do it. She traced the lines of Paige’s back with her fingers absentmindedly when they were laying on the couch, whispering soft questions that kept her alert. She learned the difference between Paige’s “I’m fine” and her actual fine, the way her voice would dip a little lower when she was overwhelmed, how her eyes would drift somewhere to the corner when she needed a break but didn’t want to hurt Azzi’s feelings and ask for one.
In two weeks, they’d mapped out the best kind of intimacy a relationship could have. It wasn’t loud, nor performative for anyone around them but perfect for their bubble. Built through sleepy forehead kisses, late-night drives when Azzi couldn’t fall asleep, and a thousand small details that they started to memorize.
Somewhere in the middle of all of it, they fell even deeper for the other, neither of them saying the words but showing it in every look, touch, and act of care.
…
Present day Azzi had just gotten goddess braids for the off season and Paige hadn’t stopped staring at her since.
Paige barely blinked when Azzi first stepped out of the salon, her eyes dragging over her like she was seeing her for the first time all over again. Now on the drive home, Paige couldn’t stop glancing over, mumbling half-sentences like “I feel like I’m cheating, swear to God.”
Azzi just laughed as she rested her elbow against the window and turned her head toward Paige. “Mmm you keep looking at me like that, we’re not making it through the door.”
Paige just shook her head, biting her lip, eyes sweeping from Azzi’s hair down to her collarbone like she couldn’t help herself before drifting back to the road. “I’m tryna be respectful baby, but Jesus.”
As soon as the front door closed Paige was behind Azzi, wrapping her arms around her waist and brushing her lips against her shoulder as she spoke. “You got me a lil ready for you already, mama,” she whispered.
Azzi turned her head slightly to whisper back, “You’re the one out here in all black like you don’t know what that does to me.”
Paige hummed, a small smile on her lips. “So we thinkin’ the same thing.”
Azzi laughed and tried to walk away, to at least kick off her shoes and grab some water, but Paige wasn’t having it as she immediately tugged Azzi gently back against her. “Just lemme look at you for a second,” Paige whispered, and Azzi could hear the sincerity in her voice. She turned, slowly to face her fully now. Paige’s heart skipped as her eyes met Azzi’s again, her gaze drinking in every new detail. The braids framed Azzi’s face perfectly and they were pulled back enough to show off her dimples and her doe eyes.
Paige reached up, using her middle finger and thumb to brush one of the braids like it was something delicate. “You look perfect,” she said, quietly. “Like…fuck man.”
Azzi let her hands rest on Paige’s hips, slipping her thumbs underneath the edge of the black tank top she’d been side-eyeing all day. “Lemme see how perfect you can make me feel baby.”
Paige grinned as she gently grabbed Azzi’s chin before connecting their lips. Making sure to kiss her intentionally; hungry in that way that never seemed to go away no matter how many days they spent tangled up in each other.
Without breaking the kiss, Paige swept her arms under Azzi’s thighs and lifted her off the ground causing Azzi to gasp against her mouth as she wrapped her arms around Paige’s neck. Paige carried her to the kitchen and sat her on the counter gently to stand between her legs.
Azzi barely had time to process the cold surface against her thighs before she felt Paige’s mouth on her neck and her hands under her shirt, trailing up her sides like she already knew every inch of her skin by heart.
It didn’t take more than a few minutes before Paige was helping Azzi pull off her shirt. Throwing it somewhere over her shoulder. She pulled back to take a breath and her eyes roamed over Azzi’s chest, her jaw tightening slightly.
“God damn,” she mumbled, her eyes full of admiration as she leaned in again, kissing and sucking along Azzi’s chest.
Azzi messily pulled Paige’s tank up and over her head, revealing the bruises, scratches, and love bites still fresh across her skin. Azzi’s eyes dragged over each one. All of them were small territorial pieces of evidence from the other day when Paige practically dared her to make a point because Azzi was pissy over another woman touching Paige’s arm.
Her fingers ghosted over the marks on Paige’s ribs, and she smiled. “I like these on you.”
Paige smiled as her mouth continued to trail down the valley of Azzi’s chest. “Still feel it every time I move.”
Azzi’s fingers moved down to undo Paige’s belt, her breath catching when Paige pulled her bra down slightly and her teeth nipped at her nipple before soothing it with her tongue. “Good,” she whispered, “Maybe next time you won’t let other bitches flirt with you in front of me.”
Paige laughed against her chest. “Nobody was flirting with me baby.”
Azzi just rolled her eyes and pulled Paige up to connect their lips. They were so wrapped up in one another—Azzi fingers tangled in Paige’s hair, Paige pulling at Azzi’s hips to get closer, her belt clinking against the edge of the counter—that they didn’t hear the front door open. They didn’t hear the keys drop in the bowl by the entrance.
Azzi’s breath hitched when Paige bit at her bottom lip before sloppily trailing down her neck.
The belt clinked softly against the edge of the counter again, but it was barely noticeable over the sounds of their own breathing. Azzi moaned softly as Paige sucked on the pulse point of her neck, moving her hands down to grip the edge of the counter.
“Yo, are y’all—? Oh my God!”
Azzi was slightly startled and on instinct pulled Paige closer to her to block their view, her chest unsteady as they both turned their heads toward the kitchen entrance.
Cam spun around so fast her blonde braid whipped behind her, using her hands to cover her face as she squeezed her eyes shut in horror. “Lord, please, I am begging you to please never let me see my sister like that again. Please, God. Take the memory away.”
Rickea and Rae stood there completely frozen, their mouths slightly open, Rickea’s eyes scanning Paige’s torso in shock while Rae’s just stayed locked in place.
Meanwhile, DiJonai brushed right past them all to open the fridge like she wasn’t surprised at what she’d just walked into in the slightest. Only offering a, “Y’all better not be sweating on the counters I’m supposed to be cooking on.”
Once Azzi adjusted her bra she turned fully toward the group looking a little mortified.
Paige, on the other hand, leaned against the counter casually and seemed completely unbothered, even with her pants still undone and her abs on display.
Rickea let out a whistle as her eyes dragged across Paige’s torso. “Damn...look like somebody been busy. She been fucking you up.”
Paige glanced down at herself and smirked. “Lil bit.”
Cam, who was still turned away, groaned louder. “Why are you answering her?! Paige I cannot unsee this. I need bleach for my eyes. Therapy maybe.”
Rae blinked once, still not saying anything, but her gaze hadn’t moved away from Paige’s exposed stomach and the way her opened pants hung a little too low on her hips.
Azzi noticed and her jaw tensed, a slight possessiveness burning in her chest as she snatched Paige’s shirt off the counter and tossed it at her aggressively. “Put on a shirt.”
Paige easily caught it sliding the black tank top over her head without saying anything. She took her time buttoning and zipping her pants before looping her belt back through. Azzi could tell that her usual wall was back up without her even saying anything.
Rickea laughed under her breath, elbowing Rae. “You really couldn’t look anywhere else?”
Rae blinked again, like she finally snapped out of her daze. “I—I didn’t even realize. That was involuntary, I’m sorry.”
“Right,” Azzi said flatly, yanking her own shirt over her head. “Y’all ever heard of knocking?”
Before anyone could respond, Cam, who was still facing the other direction with her eyes on the ceiling said, “Paige, are you fully clothed now?”
Paige didn’t bother answering. She moved to brush past her before heading upstairs. Which, of course, left Azzi standing alone in the kitchen.
“So that’s what y’all be on?” Rickea teased, as she crossed her arms and raised her eyebrows. “I ain’t know you were a lil kinky.”
Cam groaned.
Rae, who was leaning on the counter, decided to add her two cents, “So what’s the safe word?”
Azzi rolled her eyes so hard it could’ve been audible. “Y’all are annoying.”
“Annoying, or right?” Rickea grinned. “Because the evidence is all over Paige’s body.”
“It’s giving: ‘do not cook on that counter,’” Cam mumbled, finally turning around. “I swear if I ever eat toast off that counter again and catch a flavor—”
“Cam,” Azzi groaned, her face starting to burn as she reached for a water bottle to occupy her hands. “You’re being dramatic.”
“Dramatic?” Cam repeated. “You had my sister shirtless with her pants open in the kitchen in the middle of the day!”
“And I’d do it again,” Azzi said under her breath, but it was loud enough to make Rickea holler.
“She said what she said!”
DiJonai, who was sitting at the counter eating grapes, finally spoke up. “Y’all acting shocked like we ain’t all see this coming eventually.”
“True,” Rickea nodded. “Still...the kitchen, though Azzi?”
Azzi took a sip of her water and shrugged. “The vibe was right.”
Before anyone could respond, they heard Paige coming back down the stairs and they all turned towards her when she walked in the kitchen. “Why are y’all in my house?”
Cam looked at her like she was confused by the question. “Umm, maybe because your entire family is in town and coming over for dinner? Or did you forget?”
Paige just blinked at her, completely void of any recognition about what she was saying.
Rickea snorted and Rae tried to hide her smile while Cam sighed dramatically. “You don’t remember, do you?” Cam asked.
“No,” Paige said dryly before walking over to reach into DiJonai’s bowl of grapes and tossing one in her mouth.
DiJonai nudged the bowl a little closer to her without looking up from her phone. “Don’t eat the green ones. They’re too sour.”
Paige wordlessly nodded before picking through the bowl until she had a small handful of red ones. When she was done she turned and made her way into the living room, sinking into the couch before throwing on a random NBA game. Muted, of course.
The others lingered in the kitchen for a few seconds before they naturally drifted after her.
“So what are we making for dinner?” Rickea asked, as she sat on the arm of the chair closest to the couch. “Cause I’m not about to eat anything Cam cooks.”
Cam rolled her eyes. “That one time the chicken was undercooked was years ago.”
“That was last summer,” Rae corrected, as she scrolled through her phone.
DiJonai walked in and said, “I got salmon when we were at the store but I’m not about to do everything myself.”
They all settled into the living room, discussing sides and who was cooking what but it started to get a little loud when Rae and Rickea were arguing over who would prep the salmon for DiJonai.
This caused Paige to break her silence without looking at them. “If you gon’ talk,” she said flatly, “at least lower your voice.”
“Damn, I thought you’d be nicer now that you’re fuckin’ all the time,” Rickea said.
Paige turned her head to give Rickea a look that was so blank it bordered on disrespectful.
Azzi, who finally wandered in the living room had two waters in her hand and passed one to Paige before easing onto the couch next to her. She glanced between Paige and the rest of the group chuckling to herself a little. “What happened to that smile you had ten minutes ago pretty?” she teased gently as she bumped Paige’s knee with her own.
Paige’s eyes shifted toward her and gave her a small grin, her eyes a little less closed off.
Azzi smiled back at her and Paige’s hand subtly reached for hers, intertwining their fingers and pulling Azzi a little closer as she went back to watching the game.
Just like that, the chatter picked back up the girls bouncing between kitchen plans, whose playlist sucked less, and whether or not Rae was going to get distracted and burn the garlic bread again. This all happened while Paige stayed sitting next to Azzi, only ever really dialed into the conversation when she was speaking.
…
Later that day when Paige’s family got there, it was immediately chaotic. The door barely swung open before her siblings were barreling in—Lauren asking for food, Drew talking trash to Cam and Ryan almost knocking over Rae trying to race to the living room to play her PS5.
Her dad was behind them, holding a tray of some store bought dessert and his current girlfriend’s hand, already in the middle of a story no one asked for. Her mom came in a few minutes later with a few wine bottles in her hands and a tight smile that said she’d already been sipping on one before she got there.
Paige’s house that was previously filled with a peacefulness that made her chest feel open was now just loud and ringing in her ears. Tipsy laughter, overlapping conversations: Rickea teasing Drew, Rae and Cam loudly debating over the music, DiJonai yelling from the kitchen about Rae almost burning the garlic bread. Azzi was the only one who didn’t make Paige want to disappear.
Paige didn’t say much. She drifted around the edges of the room, slipping between the kitchen and couch and wherever else she could avoid contact. When the adults asked her questions, she gave clipped responses. When her siblings bugged her, she tried to soften for them, but even then her voice stayed flat. She wasn’t mad, she just felt tired causing her to want to disconnect from the chaos.
Still the night was going fine, as fine as Paige could manage until her dad brought up the fight.
“You know,” he said, laughing too loudly over his whisky glass as he tossed a card on the table, “that was probably the most impressive fight I’ve ever seen from you, kid. I mean, everything about it was perfect. The setup, the speed, everything. Never seen anything more beautiful.”
Paige didn’t look up from her hand as she tossed a card down. “Thanks,” she said flatly, not bothering to fake a smile.
“Seriously I mean it, though! You were locked in like you used to be back in the day. We were all watching it on the big screen at—what was it, Sam’s place I think?” he glanced over his shoulder towards his girlfriend for confirmation. “Yeah, yeah, we were all losing our damn minds. All my buddies were blown away.”
Paige shrugged. “Don’t remember much of it.”
Her dad looked surprised at this statement. “How do you not remember something like that?”
She didn’t respond.
He shook his head like he couldn’t accept that and reached for the remote. “You gotta see it. It’s everywhere. Think it has millions of views on YouTube now. Whole crowd was on their feet in the background.”
Paige's hand twitched in her lap before she pressed her nails into her palm. “I’m not tryna watch that right now dad.”
He waved her off like she didn’t say anything at all, already pulling up the video.
The second it lit up the large screen in her living room Paige saw her own face in the corner of the screen. She saw her fists taped, her eyes dark and her shoulders a little stiff. She felt her stomach twist, that same nausea from after the fight creeping in her abdomen and a metallic taste feeling the back of her throat. She couldn’t process the emptiness she saw on her own face.
Paige stood up quietly, taking the cards off her lap and putting them on the table without saying anything before walking out of the room. Tripping slightly over her foot on the way out.
From the kitchen where she was making Paige a drink, Azzi caught movement in the corner of her eye. She walked toward the living room, slightly confused when she heard the voice of a flight announcer yelling through the HD speakers of Paige’s living room.
The video seemed like it rolled in slow motion, showing Paige standing there, flexing her jaw as the ref gave final instructions. Azzi wasn’t listening to the sound coming from the TV, she was watching Paige’s face. Watching the hollowness in her expression, how empty her beautiful blue eyes looked as the camera zoomed in.
Azzi’s grip on the glass she was holding tightened. How did no one else see it? DiJonai, to her credit, looked uneasy. Her arms were crossed as she looked at the screen for a few seconds before she just tore her eyes away and pulled out her phone.
“Where’s Paige?” Azzi asked.
No one looked up, not wanting to miss the fight that just started.
DiJonai answered when she noticed nobody else was going to say anything. “I think she went upstairs.”
Azzi nodded once, pressing her lips together. “Thanks.” She moved to put her drink down on the counter in the kitchen before heading upstairs, the noise of the living room getting quieter.
When she stepped into Paige’s room it was empty but she noticed that the bathroom door was closed and she heard the sound of running water echoing behind it. She walked over and knocked on the door gently.
A tired, “What?” came from the other side.
“It’s me, baby,” Azzi said softly.
There was a pause. Then Paige’s voice came back noticeably softer now: “Come in.”
Azzi opened the door and stepped inside.
Paige was standing at the sink and her face was damp like she’d just splashed water on it in an attempt to steady herself. Her eyes were rimmed with a redness, not quite from crying, but Azzi could tell she was close to it.
Azzi crossed the small space between them moving to weave her fingers into Paige’s hair, coming through the strands gently.
Paige closed her eyes at the feeling as she leaned into it.
“You okay?” Azzi whispered
“No,” Paige said truthfully. Then she added, “I just need a minute though.”
Azzi nodded. “Is there something I can do?”
Instead of answering, Paige reached out and pulled her in by the waist, gently, resting her forehead against Azzi’s for a moment before tilting down and kissing her softly. It was slow, the kind of kiss that silently said thank you even if she didn’t have the words for anything else yet.
Azzi always brought her back. Azzi’s lips, Azzi’s presence, Azzi was just always something steady in the chaos for Paige.
When they pulled away, Paige brushed her thumb over Azzi’s cheek and whispered, “I’m not ready to talk about it right now.”
“Before bed?”
Paige smiled at her and confirmed, “Before bed beautiful.”
Azzi kissed her one more time before giving her one more glance before stepping back. “Don’t stay up here too long, you know I’m clingy”
Paige nodded again as she chuckled, her eyes already softer. “I won’t.”
When Azzi got back downstairs, the fight was still playing on the TV but her eyes landed on DiJonai who was sitting at the island in the kitchen. Azzi made her way over there instead of sitting on the couch, slipping into the stool next to her.
“She good?” DiJonai asked without looking up from her phone.
Azzi nodded lightly. “She’ll be ok.”
DiJonai gave a small nod.
Azzi hesitated for a second, then said, “Thank you…you know, for being there for her when she went to Dallas.”
DiJonai shrugged like it was nothing. “Of course.”
“I know she won’t ever say it,” Azzi said, “but she appreciates you. You’re one of her favorite people.”
DiJonai laughed as she leaned back a little. “I know. She can’t hide it.”
Azzi smiled, shaking her head thinking about Paige. After a moment she asked, “How’d you meet?”
DiJonai’s eyebrows raised in amusement thinking about the story. “She hasn’t told you?”
Azzi shook her head.
DiJonai let out a short laugh. “Okay, so this was Cam’s rookie year, so maybe over three years ago now? We were at this open run at a gym in L.A. Some pros, some overseas girls, just a bunch of random people. Paige was there, sitting on the side. She didn’t say shit the whole time really, was kind of just there watching.”
Azzi nodded as she listened.
“She was just staring and at first I thought she was zoned out, but it lasted for a while and eventually I was like alright she’s definitely starring. So I’m thinking, maybe she feelin’ me or whatever.” DiJonai grinned, shaking her head at herself. “So I walked up to her casually tryna be as nice as possible cause I didn’t know her and I was just like, ‘Hey, I saw you looking but I just wanted to let you know I’m taken.’”
Azzi laughed a little, trying to picture Paige in that moment. “No you didn’t.”
“I swear, I did,” DiJonai laughed. “And Paige was tone-faced as hell and was just like, ‘What?’ She said it super dry. So I say again, ‘You were staring, so I just thought I’d say something,’ and she was like, ‘I definitely wasn’t lookin’ at you.’”
Azzi fully laughed this time.
“It gets better,” DiJonai said, chuckling a little. “I tried to insist like, ‘Nah, you were definitely lookin’ at me.’ And she was like, ‘Promise you I wasn’t. You really not my type sweetheart.’ Then turns her head and went back to watching the run like I wasn’t standing there.”
Azzi covered her mouth, trying not to laugh too loud. “She’s so fucking rude.”
“Right?” DiJonai grinned. “But it was funny and after that, I kinda respected her ’cause she was for real not tryna get with me. Was barely interested in my presence, just wanted to watch basketball and that was rare in L.A.”
DiJonai leaned on her elbows as she continued. “I was in L.A. a lot around that time. Cam was always inviting me to runs, so I started showing up more, hanging out with them after. Paige was super closed off, but we kinda clicked eventually 'cause neither one of us was ever with the bullshit. No fake love.”
Azzi smiled again, her eyes drifting toward the staircase like she could sense Paige near it. “Yeah…that sounds like her.”
“Realest person I’ve ever met,” DiJonai said. Then she added, “She’s prolly the most stubborn too though, so…good luck with that.”
Paige walked in the kitchen, looking a little steadier than she had upstairs. Her hair was slightly damp from where she’d splashed water on her face, but her jaw wasn’t clenched anymore and her shoulders looked looser.
She looked down at Azzi, and said softly, “Talkin’ ’bout me?”
Azzi looked up at her and gave her a small smile before biting her bottom lip slightly to flirt a little. “Always.”
Paige didn’t say anything back just chuckled before walking past both of them and going into the living room. The fight was still on, probably replayed who knows how many times but Paige picked up the remote and turned the TV off, ignoring the protests around her. “Find somethin’ else.”
Azzi who was still sitting at the island smiled even though she couldn’t see Paige.
Paige sat in the corner of the couch, grabbing one of her throw blankets and pulling it over her lap.
The chaos of the house picked up again as they started to entertain themselves now that the fight was off. Her mom started telling a story about one of the AAU mom’s from Ryan’s team while Ryan and Drew immediately turned back on the PS5, Lauren yelling at them to grow up when they argued over who could use the custom controller. Paige sat through it in silence.
Azzi didn’t say anything when she walked in, she just scanned the room until her eyes landed on Paige in the corner of the couch and she made her way over, lowering herself next to her.
Paige adjusted the blanket to cover Azzi’s lap too before shifting to make space for her letting Azzi lean into her side. A loose braid fell across Azzi’s check and Paige reached up to brush it back, her fingers lingering against Azzi’s temple.
“You cold?” Paige asked softly when she noticed Azzi pulling the sleeves of her sweater over her hands.
Azzi shook her head, smiling at her privately. “M’good baby.”
Her voice was quiet, but neither of them realized that the volume in the room dropped completely. Paige’s mom blinked at them mid-sentence, looking at them with a huge grin. Lauren elbowed Ryan, who looked over and finally noticed the moment too, while Drew stared openly.
None of her family had ever seen Paige like this. To them this was the same girl who could barely tolerate a group hug at family holidays. Now she was gently tucking a blanket over someone else, asking her if she was cold and inviting physical touch like she missed it.
Cam smirked from her chair. “Oh, so this is why you forgot about family dinner.”
Her mom, who was still grinning hugely, leaned over to whisper something to Lauren.
“You’re makin’ me look soft,” Paige whispered.
Azzi leaned in, her nose brushing against the curve of Paige’s neck. “Mmm maybe a little, it’s okay though, right?”
Paige turned her head and when she did their faces were so close their foreheads almost touched. Her eyes held Azzi’s for longer than she intended to. A slight tension in each of their stomach’s as she whispered back, “Right.”
Azzi smiled at her answer as she shifted closer into Paige’s side, tuning back into the original conversation like nothing happened.
Even with this small moment with Azzi, since seeing herself on the TV Paige felt off. The noise around her: the laughter, the overlapping stories, the clatter of glasses seemed to blur in her ears. Not quite ringing but muffled, like she had water clogging her eardrum. Because of this her eyes and her mind drifted often, not fixated on anything in particular but certainly not present.
It happened a few times. When her mom asked Azzi about next season. When her dad laughed too loud at something Cam said. When Drew tried to show her something and she just blinked at him like he was speaking another language. Paige was sitting there but parts of her weren’t and Azzi noticed.
The first time she noticed that Paige zoned out, Azzi slid her hand under the blanket and gently tapped her knee twice. Paige blinked a few times, then glanced over, and Azzi gave her a slight smile, silently asking if she was ok. Paige didn’t smile back, but her eyes softened when she looked at Azzi.
When it happened again, Azzi picked up a strawberry off the table and held it in front of Paige’s mouth without saying anything. Paige stared at it for a second, before she parted her lips slowly bitting it from Azzi’s fingers, chewing absentmindedly while Azzi ate the rest of it.
At one point, Paige leaned her head back against the couch cushion and closed her eyes. Azzi let them stay shut for a while but eventually she nudged her shoulder lightly with her own. “You fallin’ asleep on me big head?” she whispered.
Paige didn’t open her eyes, just gave a raspy “No.” But then she cracked a small smile just for Azzi.
Each time Paige drifted off into her own head, or just spaced out all together Azzi brought her back. Paige offering something small each time to show she appreciated it without saying it outright.
Eventually, DiJonai called out that dinner was ready and the group started moving toward the dining room. Paige stood up slowly, stretching her arms above her head with a quiet groan and Azzi just laughed at her before waiting for her to walk to the table.
As everyone began picking seats around the table, Azzi started to slide into the open seat next to Cam, assuming Paige’s mom would want to sit next to her daughter but as she started to lower herself into the chair, she felt a soft grip wrap around her wrist.
Paige tugged her back toward the seat next to her. Azzi glanced at Paige’s mom who just gave her a small smile putting her hand on her shoulder before sitting in the seat next to Cam.
Dinner was filled with inside jokes from the kids and overlapping conversation. One of them tried to explain a TikTok trend to their dad who just kept saying it didn’t make any sense. Rae bragged about how everybody seemed to like the garlic bread this time and Cam tried to say they weren’t that good despite being on her second piece already. It was the perfect mix of warmth and noise.
Paige sat in the middle of it all again, quietly chewing on her food, smiling occasionally, but once again there were moments. Smakk fleeting moments where she just faded out. Her eyes would drift down to her plate and her jaw would tighten briefly before loosening again like she was forcing herself to relax.
Once again Azzi saw it each time. She’d nudge Paige’s foot with her own under the table. Whisper something dumb about how aggressive Cam was using her fork. Point out how Drew was eating like somebody was going to steal his plate. Each small effort drew the corners of Paige’s up, even if it was just for a second.
Azzi knew that seeing the fight was bothering her. Getting her stuck somewhere she didn’t want to be so she just wanted to do small things to keep her present.
But like all dads who can’t help but want to brag about their kids, her dad opened his mouth about the fight again. “You know,” he said mid-chew, wiping his hands on a napkin, “I still don’t get why you’re not more pumped about that fight kid. I mean, it was legendary. How are you not still riding that high? Figured we’d have to pull you out of the gym for dinner.”
Paige pushed a piece of a pepper around her plate with her fork before answering, “Told you. I don’t remember it.”
Her dad laughed, confused on why she kept saying this. “C’mon, how do you not remember a fight like that? You were insane out there. I’ve watched it more times than I can count and it’s only been two weeks.”
“I dissociated so bad I don’t remember it.”
There was a pause as everyone processed the words differently. Some thinking it was a good thing, others finally noticing how messed up she seems about the fight.
Her dad just grinned, eating a bite of his salmon before saying, “Man, that’s a different kind of locked in. That’s next-level. Mind of a killer.”
“Right,” Paige mumbled.
Azzi tried to step in, change the subject a little. “Okay, but can we please talk about how Cam is on her third piece of garlic bread tonight. I vividly remember her saying she’d never eat anything Rae touched.”
Everyone laughed. Well everyone except Paige, who didn’t even look up from her plate and her dad who was still curious about fighting.
Her dad leaned in, waving his fork around. “So what are you thinking for the next one? If it’s anything like that last fight, I gotta be there in person. Can’t afford to miss a show like that.”
Paige’s voice was quiet, almost too soft to hear over the chatter. “I’m takin’ a break.”
He blinked at her. “A break?”
She didn’t bother to elaborate.
“What do you mean?” he asked again, frowning now.
“I mean,” Paige said slower, drier, “I’m takin’ a break. Not fighting.”
Her dad gave a quick scoff, like he was brushing it off. “Come on, kid. What? That was probably the best form you’ve been in since you started. You had that girl out of her league. You got—”
“I just need a break,” Paige cut in, clearly done with the conversation.
There was a brief silence until Ryan, her younger brother, piped up with a grin, trying to lighten the mood but not fully knowing any better with his comment. “She probably just wants more time up under Azzi.”
It was meant to be a joke, but it landed wrong, especially the way he said it.
Paige turned her head toward him and her expression was unreadable. “Watch your mouth, Ryan.”
The grin faded off his face, and he looked down at his plate.
Her dad sighed, clearly still not understanding. “Okay, so how long you thinkin’? Just a few weeks without hitting the gym? A month?”
“I don’t know dad.”
“Well, you better figure it out soon,” he said, voice picking up at the end of each word. “There’s already talk about someone throwing another challenge your way in a few months. Big up and comer. Could be a real headliner if everybody plays their cards right.”
“I’m reigning champ,” Paige replied, not even bothering to look at him. “I’ll be fine saying no to one fight.”
“But you know how this works. Momentum matters. You slow down now, people start talking—”
Paige dropped her fork with a soft clink against the plate and looked up. When she did her eyes looked tired but there was a sharpness to them. “I don’t need you to manage my career, I pay somebody for that.”
That shut him up and no one else spoke after that. The table felt still, suspended in a slight awkwardness for a second until Rickea at the far end changed the subject with a forced laugh and a comment about Rae.
Paige didn’t join in. She reached for her napkin, wiped her mouth before pushing her chair back and getting up from the table. She quietly walked towards the patio doors before slipping into the backyard.
Everyone kept eating like nothing happened, even though the energy had shifted just a little.
Azzi gave her a few minutes, enough time to breathe without an audience; gather herself if she needed to, before she quietly stood up and followed her outside.
When Azzi stepped out the night air was a little brisk so she wrapped her arms around herself before her eyes caught the light coming from the far end of the yard in the gym.
When she stepped inside, Paige’s scent filled the air naturally along with the smell of leather and lavender. Her eyes landed on the cage where she saw Paige lying flat on her back in the middle of it with her eyes fixed on the ceiling like she was trying to find answers in her ceiling.
Azzi walked into the cage quietly and eased herself down next to Paige not saying anything. She just laid there with her, shoulder to shoulder, their bodies naturally aligning like puzzle pieces.
After a moment, Paige reached over and pulled Azzi into her chest and Azzi adjusted herself to fit more comfortably, draping her arm across Paige’s waist and resting her head where she could hear the thump of her heart. It was loud, louder than usual. Like it had something to say to the rest of Paige’s body.
They laid like that, in the stillness of the gym, until Azzi spoke up. “Tell me what’s goin’ on in that pretty head of yours please.”
Paige exhaled, using her fingers to toying with one of Azzi’s braids, a grounding motion more for herself than anything else. “I just don’t feel fully here right now,” she admitted quietly. “I Can feel myself dissociating and I…I don’t like it. I’ve been fine for two weeks before today.”
“It didn’t start happening until he brought up the fight,” Azzi pointed out, watching her reaction closely.
Paige nodded. “Yeah. I know.” There was a long pause before she continued, her eyes slightly unfocused as she stared past the ceiling. “My body still feels physically sick when I think about it. Like it happened today. Like I’m back there. I have to force myself not to think about it the second I wake up. Every day. Like I’m making a conscious decision to not let it spiral the moment I open my eyes.”
Azzi moved her hand up to the base of her neck, running her fingers through her hair again. “Ohh,” she said with a big grin, trying to lift the weight in Paige’s chest with a joke, “so that’s why you’ve been waking me up at the ass crack of dawn, claiming you’re bored?”
Paige let out a laugh, the first real one of the night. “God forbid I need a little entertainment first thing.”
Azzi playfully rolled her eyes at the excuse before swinging her leg over to straddle Paige’s waist. Paige’s hands went to Azzi’s hips without thinking.
Azzi leaned down, her fingertips moving through Paige’s roots in a calming pattern. “The psychiatrist we found. She’s scheduled to come tomorrow, right?”
Paige nodded, as she closed her eyes. “Yeah.”
“You still good with it?” Azzi asked softly.
“I mean…not excited,” Paige murmured, “but I know I need to talk to somebody. Can’t keep pretending I’m fine.”
Azzi brushed a bit of hair away from her forehead with her thumb. “You don’t have to be ‘fine’ with me all the time. I hope you know that.”
“I know,” Paige said, opening her eyes to look down to meet Azzi’s. “It’s the only reason I’m not losing my mind right now.”
Azzi tilted her head up. “That and the fact I’m a phenomenal emotional support girlfriend.”
Paige smirked, squeezing her hips. “Mmm. Top tier, really.”
Azzi leaned in closer, dropping her voice to a soft whisper. “Can’t let you forget it.”
She lingered there, close enough for her breath to tickle Paige’s lips as she smiled at her. Then, gently, she closed the small gap, pressing her lips to Paige’s in a soft kiss. It was filled with the natural affection that started to live in the space they’d carved for each other.
Paige’s hands slid up Azzi’s sides, brushing her thumbs over her ribs as she melted into the softness of Azzi’s lips.
Azzi shifted down, angling her head to deepen the kiss as she caught Paige’s lower lip between hers. Paige’s spine pressed into the floor of the cage as Azzi pressed down further, rolling her hips once to test the waters. Then again when she heard a soft hum at the base of Paige’s throat.
Paige wrapped her arms around Azzi’s torso, wanting to be closer to her.
Then a knock on the gym door interrupted the moment.
Paige let her head fall back against the floor with a soft thud as she groaned in frustration.
Azzi immediately swatted her shoulder. “Why would you let your big ass head fall back like that?” She rolled off of Paige with a sigh when all she did was just grinned up at her.
Eventually Paige called out dryly, “Yeah?”
The door creaked open and her dad poppied his head in, looking half-guilty. “We’re gonna head out, kid. We’ll talk later, yeah?”
Paige gave him a thumbs up, not bothering to sit up. Her dad gave her a tight smile before pulling the door shut behind him.
The silence barely lasted a heartbeat before Paige was pulling Azzi back toward her, curling her hands around her waist again. Azzi leaned in close, letting their nose brush and Paige’s eyes fluttered closed before she whispered against her lips, “No.”
Paige’s eyebrows furrowed, and she pouted, “You’re no fun.”
Azzi grinned and gave her a quick peck. “Don’t pout. I’ll make it up to you later I promise.”
Paige grinned widely and she looked so cute it made it hard for Azzi not to give in to her when she said, “Why not now?”
Azzi opened her mouth, ready to answer when the gym doors slammed open with a loud bang.
“Yo stop fuckin!” Rickea’s yelled.
“We knew y’all were hidin’ in here somewhere,” Rae added as they all walked in ready to distract Paige in whatever way she needed.
DiJonai walked in last, shaking her head. “Look at this. Can’t leave y'all alone for five seconds.”
Azzi huffed, sitting up reluctantly mumbling, “That’s why not.”
Paige sighed, letting her head fall back against the mat again, mumbling to herself, “This is why I can't have nice things.”
Rickea squinted at the two of them from the edge of the cage. “Y’all makin’ out in here or having a kumbaya? I can’t tell.”
Paige doesn’t respond, just closes her eyes like she was trying to will the interruption away while Azzi stands up, brushing off her pants.
Cam chimed in not wanting to hear anything about what they were potentially doing as she bounced on the balls of her feet. “Paigey, you gotta teach Rae how to throw a punch.”
“No,” Paige said flatly without opening her eyes.
That got the whole group laughing.
“Wait, seriously though, she doesn’t know how to throw one.”
Paige finally cracked her eye’s open, locking eyes with Rae. “You deadass?”
“Unfortunately,” Rae admitted with a small shrug, clearly not proud of it.
Paige exhaled like it physically pained her to get up from where she was. Still she sat up slowly, rolling her neck before stepping out of the cage. “Grab wrap and some gloves,” she mumbled as she made her way toward a bench.
Rickea leaned over to Rae, whispering. “Don’t do nothin’ stupid or Azzi gon’ get you.”
Rae shoved her lightly, laughing under her breath as she walked toward the wall Paige pointed to.
The second Paige sat down at the bench, Azzi followed her and slid in behind her, draping her arms around Paige’s waist and resting her chin on her shoulder. The move seemed casual, but there was a slight deliberate possession in the decision.
Paige tilted her head back to glance at her. “Wassup?”
Azzi’s lips brushed her ear as she whispered, “Don’t be all touchy.”
Rae walked up holding the wrap and gloves in her hands as she plopped down cross-legged in front of Paige before she could respond. Paige just chuckled at Azzi’s whispered warning.
Without pulling away from the way Azzi was draped over her shoulders and trailing her nails across her neck Paige reached out and grabbed one of Rae’s hands as she started to work the wrap around her knuckles.
“So wait,” Cam said, as she leaned against the wall, “how you a whole D1 athlete and don’t know how to throw a punch Rae?”
“I play basketball, not Mortal Kombat,” Rae answered like it was a stupid question.
Rickea snorted. “Girl, with how you foul, I just assumed you’d be good at it.”
“See, this is why I don’t play defense,” Rae mumbled under her breath.
As Paige silently focused on wrapping Rae’s fingers, Azzi stayed behind her, practically molded to her back. Her hands moved down to casually slide beneath Paige’s sweatshirt, her nails scratching softly at the skin near her waist.
Paige’s movements stuttered briefly, but she didn’t say anything about it.
Azzi leaned in to whisper, “Just making sure you don’t forget I’m here.”
“You’re literally in my spine,” Paige muttered.
“Exactly,” Azzi grinned.
DiJonai walked up, holding up her wrapped hands for Paige to inspect, having learned to do it herself during Paige’s extended stay in Dallas. Paige glanced at them, gave her a quick nod, and DiJonai went back to her corner to put some gloves on.
Paige tightened the wrap as she worked toward Rae’s wrist. Azzi shifted behind her, resting her chin on Paige’s shoulder again and starting to sway them both slightly like she was slow dancing in place.
“Ma’am,” Paige said under her breath, lips twitching to hide her smile. “Please.”
“I’m not doing anything,” Azzi said, her voice quiet for only Paige to hear as she nestled even closer into her neck. “Just supportin’ my girlfriend as she gives out free boxing lessons to other women.”
Paige glanced back at her with a faint grin. “She’s your teammate.”
Azzi only responded with a quiet, “Hm.”
Paige shook her head, finishing the last loop of the wrap around Rae’s hand. “Flex your fingers.”
Rae did as she was told, curling her fingers a few times and Paige gave a nod, jerking her chin toward the light bag.
Rae stood up, cracking her knuckles like she knew what she was doing. “Try not to judge me too hard,” she mumbled as she walked off.
Paige pushed off her knees, about to follow her, but Azzi’s grip around her waist stayed tight, holding her in place. Paige paused, chuckling as she looked over her shoulder. “Wassup, mama?”
Azzi pouted, putting her plump lips on display, as she furrowed her eyebrows like she wasn’t ready to share. Paige chuckled again before angling herself to press a kiss to her lips. Letting it linger for a few seconds.
From the cage, Cam’s exaggerated gagging cut through the moment. “Okay! We get it! Y’all like each other or whatever,” she yelled. “Go touch gloves or touch foreheads just stop doing it in front of me!”
Paige pulled back with a lopsided grin, whispering against Azzi’s lips, “You’n gotta be jealous.”
“I’m not,” Azzi whispered even though she was still holding her waist like she was indeed very jealous.
“Right.” Paige kissed her one more time before standing up and walking over to where Rae stood by the bag.
Rae stood in front of the light bag and her stance was uncertain, fists raised like she’d only ever watched boxing on TV.
“Feet shoulder-width apart,” Paige said, tapping Rae’s ankle with her foot to guide it. “You’re gonna wanna keep one slightly back so you can pivot. Don’t be flat-footed or it’ll take you too long to move.”
Rae adjusted before glancing over her shoulder. “Like this?”
Paige gave a small nod. “Better. Keep your chin tucked and your hands up. Higher.” She stepped closer and lifted Rae’s left wrist. “You’re not waving at nobody. Guard your face.”
She said you look friendly as hell!” Rickea laughed from the bench, stretching her legs out.
“I am friendly,” Rae muttered.
“Yeah, and that’s how you get fucked up,” Paige said. She demonstrated a jab in the air. “Lead with your left then come across with your right.”
Rae attempted to mimic what Paige did. Her form was a little stiff, but passable.
“Not terrible,” Paige said. “Loosen up though. You throwing like you're worried about breaking a nail.”
“Because I am!” Rae shot back, shaking her hand out with a grin.
“Girl,” DiJonai said, as she practiced slow combos against her own bag.
Rae tried again and the second time she was a little more relaxed. Paige stepped in behind her, using her hands to adjust Rae’s shoulders and guiding her hip through the rotation of a punch.
From the bench Azzi narrowed her eyes. She reached next to her on the bench and grabbed a spare wrap, and threw it at Paige. It thumped against her back.
Paige looked over her shoulder. “Really?”
Azzi raised her eyebrow, looking a little dryly at Paige. “You tryna spar or flirt?”
“I’m teaching.”
“You’re teaching real hands-on.”
Paige shook her head before taking a step back.
Rickea snorted. “She got real professional real quick, huh?”
Paige mumbled something under her breath, before turning back towards Rae. “Again. This time, pivot on that back foot. Don’t muscle it, snap it.”
Rae’s next punch landed with a satisfying pop that made Paige miss the sound. Rae blinked in surprise, glancing back at Paige for approval.
“There you go.” Paige gave a short nod. “Do that like ten more times. Then switch sides. Reset your stance each time.”
Rae nodded and turned back to the bag, a little more confident now and Paige backed away, strolling back toward the bench. Azzi was still sitting where Paige left her and she had one hand propping up her chin, watching with an unreadable expression until Paige got closer.
Then Azzi tilted her head up, looking up at her through her lashes. Lashes Paige knew damn well she did not need to bat like that causing her to stop in her tracks.
“Stop,” she said under her breath, tightening her jaw as she stared down at her.
Azzi smirked on purpose. “Stop what?”
Paige exhaled through her nose. “You know what.”
Azzi hummed low in her throat, not moving from her position. “Mmm, no I think you gotta be a little more specific, baby.”
Paige blinked at her, visibly trying to keep her expression neutral, but Azzi just tilted her head a little more to the side, tucking her bottom lip between her teeth.
“You just gon’ stand there lookin’ all tense?” Azzi asked softly. “Or you wanna admit I’m in your head a little?”
Paige huffed a laugh through her nose, stepping closer. “You’re ridiculous.”
“Maybe,” Azzi whispered, dropping her gaze to Paige’s mouth before flicking back up. “But I’m not wrong.”
Paige’s hand lifted without thinking, her fingers cradling Azzi’s jaw as her thumb brushed across her cheek, then softly over her bottom lip. The way she was touching her was gentle. Completely contrasting the way Paige was looking at her.
Azzi leaned into it, her smile softening into something more genuine. “You wanna kiss me again, or just admire the view?”
“Trying not to actually,” Paige admitted under her breath.
Azzi held back a grin and said something too low for Paige to catch.
“What?” Paige leaned down instinctively to hear.
Azzi’s smile grew, locking her eyes on hers as she made her voice a little lower and whispered, “I said...you’re going to make me forget my name if you keep lookin’ at me like that, daddy.”
Paige froze and a visible ripple of tension moved through her whole body as her jaw clenched harder this time. She didn’t even look away from Azzi as she said flatly, “I need y’all to come back tomorrow.”
There was a beat of silence as they processed her words, then a chorus of groans erupted across the gym.
“We just started!”
“Nah, you serious?”
“Woww, that’s crazy,” Cam added, dramatically.
Still in the midst of complaining, the rest of them were moving way too slow and dragging their feet. So Paige just muttered “Whatever. Y’all can stay,” as Azzi laced her fingers through hers and tugged her gently toward the house.
DiJonai yells out after them, “Please remember I’m staying in the guest room!” Subtly telling them to not be too loud as everyone went back to what they were doing, deciding not to leave.

Albino human Prowl Albino human Prowl Albino human Prowl Albino human Prowl Albino human- pLEAse Kef hear my war cries🙌
Also also people with albinism tend to be venerable to the sun and have pale skin, so it pretty much matches Prowl's ideal human design! ...Maybe the red strings of hair are in fact on of the physical byproducts of the neuro link connection with the mechs?? *Just throwing ideas at the wall to see what sticks and catches your attention honestly *
Ohhhhhhh okay okay I see your vision
That would also mean he has shitty vision when he's outside of his mech lol

Actually now when I think of that. It would be pretty interesting if Prowl would be able to "see" literally everything while piloting bc his mech is packed with sensors and mapping tools.
But then he disconnects - and everything is blurry

You ask, I deliver:
The possessive reader AU, I know neither of them can stand the thought of their partner going to the dentist. Laying back, letting someone else know the interior of that mouth, fingers sliding over soft tissue and mapping out the points of those teeth? Possibly drawing blood that should rightfully be theirs? Someone sedate these two like they’re aggressive cats coming in for a cleaning at the vet.
shoutout to this absolute legend who sent me the idea because you unlocked something unholy in me. READ PART 1 HERE cw: smut, possessive/obsessive behavior, semi-public sex (in a car), unprotected sex..
You drive him to the appointment because he hates doing it alone. Still, honestly, the entire time you’re behind the wheel, you’re gripping it hard enough that you’re surprised it doesn’t just snap in half, because the only thing going through your head is the mental image of some stranger putting their hands in Simon’s mouth, tilting his head back, touching him in places that should be yours, places only you should ever be allowed to know, and the tiny noises he makes when he’s uncomfortable.
You swear to god if you think about it one second longer, you might actually commit a felony.
Simon looks over at you once when you stop at a red light, raises an eyebrow under his cap, and says, “You gonna calm down, sweetheart, or am I gonna have to sedate you this time?”
And you smile at him, all bright and sunny like the most normal girlfriend ever, except you know it’s not right, you can feel it pulling at your mouth wrong, too many teeth showing, a smile you have to force out of yourself before you start growling or crying or both.
Simon just shakes his head a little and mutters, “Terrifying,” under his breath like he thinks you can’t hear him.
At the office, you sit together in those shitty chairs, pretending you’re normal people, and you’re almost holding it together until the door opens and of course it’s a young woman, pretty, smiling, fresh little uniform and shiny name tag and all, and your stomach twists itself into a thousand angry knots because now you’re not just imagining some faceless stranger, you’re staring at the exact woman who’s about to put her hands in Simon’s mouth, who’s about to know the little sounds he makes when he flinches, who's gonna touch him, smell him, see him with his mask off, and you grip the chair so hard you think it might crack.
“Simon Riley?” she calls, all sweet and professional, and Simon stands up, but before he can even move, you grab his wrist like you’re going to drag him back down into the chair and refuse to let him go, and he just gives you this look, this calm, amused, patient look that makes you want to bite him right there in the waiting room.
“I’ll be right back,” he says, like he knows you’re two seconds from throwing yourself at the poor woman and clawing her eyes out, and he squeezes your hand once before he goes, and that’s the only thing that keeps you in your seat.
You sit there staring at the closed door, thinking about all the ways you could ruin this woman’s life if she smiles too much or laughs at one of his stupid little jokes or leans too close or touches him too long, because no one should get to touch him but you, no one should get to see how good he is when he’s soft and quiet and letting someone take care of him, and it’s yours, it’s all supposed to be yours, and god, you’re so far gone you don’t even want to be normal about it anymore.
By the time he comes back out, you’re already halfway to throwing a fit, but he just looks tired and a little dazed from the fluoride, and he’s rubbing his jaw like it’s sore, and that’s all it takes for the switch to flip in your brain, from violent to protective in half a second.
You drag him out into the parking lot without a word, shoving him into the passenger seat and climbing over him before he can even say anything, straddling his lap with your knees pressed into the seat on either side of his hips, grabbing his face in both hands like you’re checking him over for damage even though what you really want is to mark him, make him messy, make him smell like you so no one else ever gets any stupid ideas again.
“She touched you,” you whisper, half accusation, half devastation, pressing your forehead to his while breathing him in so hard it feels like you’re trying to pull the air out of his lungs.
“She wore gloves,” he says, voice low and careful like he’s talking to a crazy person, which, fair, because you are, and it’s not even enough, it’s not even close to enough, because he still let her, still let someone else close, still trusted someone else to take care of him when that’s your job.
You kiss him messy and hard, sliding your hands into his hair, tugging at it just to feel him grunt against your mouth, and then you’re rocking your hips against him, grinding down until you feel him start to stiffen underneath you, until you know he can’t even think straight anymore, and you pull back just enough to pant into his mouth, “Mine. All mine. No one else touches you. No one else gets to even look at you like that.”
Simon’s hands dig into your waist, trying to slow you down, trying to catch his breath, but you’re not having it.
You’re already unbuttoning his jeans with shaky hands, already sinking down onto him with a broken little gasp because you need it, need him inside you, need to erase the memory of someone else touching him, need to make him so messy and ruined that no one else would ever dare think he belonged to anyone but you.
You ride him fast and desperate, muttering broken things against his skin, promises and threats and prayers all tangled together — "you're mine, mine, only mine, gonna mark you up so bad no one'll even think about touching you again, gonna make you come so hard you forget everyone else’s name but mine"
And Simon’s already so wrecked, clinging to you, groaning into your neck, hips stuttering helplessly, and when you bite down on his shoulder hard enough to leave a bruise through his hoodie, he spills inside you with a sound so rough and desperate it’s almost a sob.
You don't let up, grinding on him slow and filthy, kissing his throat, his jaw, whispering, "mine, mine, always mine," over and over again until you feel him throb inside you one more time, a second, broken little aftershock you didn’t even know was possible.
And when you finally pull back and look at him, red-faced, breathing hard, pupils blown wide, he just smiles that stupid, wrecked little smile he only ever gives you, and you know you don’t have to say anything else.
Because the way he looks at you — like he belongs to you, like he wants to belong to you — is all the proof you’ll ever need.

your laugh

you grinned up at your boyfriend. “oh, kei, i’m so excited!” you exclaimed, stepping into the music festival after you were given your wristbands. “thanks for getting us the tickets.” you smiled up at him.
he nodded, squeezing your hand once. “your favorite artist is finally here.” he shrugged, as if it wasn’t a big deal. your favorite artist was there, so obviously he had to, right? that was probably what was going through his mind.
you shook your head, nudging him with your elbow. “it’s really sweet.” you smiled softly at him. he looked at you, then rolled his eyes and looked away. you grinned at the pink beginning to tint his cheeks.
“yeah, yeah. you’re welcome.” he said, looking at the map and schedule he was given when you checked in. “they go on in twenty minutes, and it’s pretty far. we should go there now so we don’t miss anything. then we can walk around and look for food or something.”
“sounds like a plan.” you nodded, following him to the stage. neither of you really cared about the other artists. you were just excited to be out with tsukishima, and you could tell he was feeling the same. it’d been a while since you’d gone on a date. all you had lately were late night calls and weekend sleepovers once a month. you had finals, and he was super busy with practice. finally, though, you were on this date. you’d always wanted to go to this music festival, but had no reason to. this was a perfect opportunity.
-
you shook tsukishima's arm once the show was over. “that was so perfect!” you exclaimed, trying to be loud enough over the crowd. “and i can’t believe we got so close!” you were buzzing with excitement. he could feel the energy radiating off of you. “let’s eat!” you grinned at him. he admired your wide smile for a moment, then nodded.
“it was good.” he said. “i honestly didn’t think it’d be that cool.”
“really?” you asked. “i’ve already shown you how their concerts look.” you said as you both started walking.
he let go of your hand to pull out the map. “yeah, but music festivals are different. artists don’t normally go all out for them.” he shrugged, looking through the map. he heard you hum. then he heard you gasp softly but ignored it. you were probably looking at something on your phone that you’d tell him about later. you always did. “do you just want some fast food, or do you want to wait to eat?” he asked, looking through the map. “there are snacks we can get while we’re here if you want to have dinner at a real restaurant.” he kept looking, but when he didn’t hear your response, he furrowed his brows. he turned to his right to look for you, only to find that you weren’t there? “y/n?” he called out, looking around the crowd for you. he sighed. of course you’d gotten lost. i’m such an idiot.
you were definitely gasping at a stall you found with something cute or something that looked good and rushed over to it without him noticing. you couldn’t have been far. all these stalls had long lines. he looked around, not finding you. when he didn’t see you in the general area, he started to worry. how could you have gone so far? where could you have gone? you were surely smart enough to know not to go off with strangers. you were adults! he put the map away, trying to remember where you both were when he’d heard you gasp. he walked back, looking around that area, even though it wasn’t that far. he pulled out his phone, then groaned softly. there wasn’t even service. how was there not service? he was outside! it was probably his shitty phone plan.
“y/n!” he called out again, a bit louder this time. it earned him some looks from the crowd which would’ve bothered him if he weren’t so concerned about you.
finally, he heard you.
he heard your laugh. smooth and sweet. your laugh sounded how it felt to eat ice cream on a hot summer day. the hottest summer day in history, actually. he turned to where he heard you, watching you in conversation with a group of people you’d found. he sighed, watching you laugh again, face brightening as your smile grew. his worries melted away, and he walked over. “y/n.” he said, in that soft voice of his that you rarely got to hear.
he noticed you brighten more upon seeing him, and his heart almost shattered. “kei!” you said happily. “i was looking for you! where’d you go?” you asked.
“me?” he asked. he looked at the people you were talking to. “i’m sorry. thank you.” he smiled politely, and then walked off with you. you waved at them, then looked at him. “you disappeared.”
“oh, right, look!” you held up a bag. then you took two items out of it. two keychains. matching dinosaur keychains. “i saw these and i had to get them for us!”
he looked at them and smiled, taking the one you held out to him. “thank you, love.” he said, kissing your head. “don’t do that again. i got worried.” he mumbled against your hair.
you laughed softly. “i won’t.” you looked up at him and pressed a peck to his lips. when you pulled away, he kept eye contact, just to hear that perfect, perfect laugh again. he wanted to hear you laugh for the rest of his life, without a doubt.

a/n ⋆ ok... i know i should be working on my requests but i was scrolling tiktok again SKUEG this tiktok [in case it's deleted, the text in the tiktok says "when i lose my gf in a crowd but i hear the sweetest laugh" and the video is a drawing of a guy finding his girlfriend because she laughs, the art is so pretty] was so cute literally immediately thought of a fic LIKEEE WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DOOOOO I COULDNT HELP MYSELFF !

I know this is more of a subjective question, but I really like your AU so I thought I'd ask!
Do you have any tips for making an AU? I've tried multiple times but always end up scrapping it due to one reason or another.
HONESTLY?! My answer probably won’t be helpful but I’ll try to explain HAHA
For starters I just have a RIDICULOUS amount of passion for this 💀 I think about it all the time and art/writing(sorta)/character development/etc is my biggest hobby so anytime I’m not busy, I wanna do this . Which ok I SWEAR I HAVE A LIFE LOL I PROMISE I HAVE FRIENDS IRL. I have a very good work/life/hobby balance
Plus a lot of the stuff is just kinda like… idk it’s just what I was thinking. I’ve been into creeptpasta since I was 9, and I wrote some shitty little fanfiction
But ACTUAL HELPFUL advice? (Or at least what helped ME personally…)
Ask questions the entire process
Create the main problem/antagonist first. Immediately helps create motivations and a reason behind every character, plus conflict typically drives a story so Yk…
Try not to overwhelm yourself with cool concepts. The only main powerful forces I keep in my Au are slenderman, operator, and zalgo. I rewrote jacks story where he was possessed by zalgo, not chernabog, simply because I didn’t wanna have too many huge entities… I KNOWWW it’s hard to restrain yourself cuz you just wanna add a bunch of stuff but it really helps to keep it concise
Create a very rough map. Like organize what the terrain looks like. That’ll immediately create questions: who lives where, is it a city or town or forest? Tons of cabins? Do they live in shitty apartments? Why do they live there? How do they afford it? Etc
Try to keep the cast small at first… I started with 12 and moved up to 16. It’s too overwhelming if you have 20+ characters, and it’s easy to lose motivation if you feel like you need to consider 20+ characters in every decision you make. Then try to choose who are like… A plot characters, B plot characters, C plot, etc. so you know who you actually wanna dive into. It’s okay if not everyone as fleshed out perfectly!
Keep it well organized and easily accessible !
I use MIRO to create a timeline. I gave everyone individual plot points, and I sorta let the “main” story evolve around that
I use google sites to keep the characters and rough details of their backstories written.
#you asked me this like months ago#and I had this answer in my drafts since the day you asked#but for some reason I never posted it#I think I wanted to add more to it#but I won’t . otherwise I’ll procrastinate#LMAOOO#asks

Even the sound of my own nails rhythmically tapping on the counter was annoying me. To be fair, it didn’t take much today to blow my fuse, which had never been particularly long in the first place. But after a week of being belittled by old white men and working endless hours of unpaid overtime, I’d about had it.
Welcome to the art world. You know well before you enter that the hours are brutal and the job market is more than frustrating, but you love art. You’ve got good organizational skills, you’re resilient, charming when it counts, and you tend to romanticize things even when you know you shouldn’t. It’s too late to turn back now.
"That’s why I don’t use an agenda or notebook. If something’s important enough for me to attend, I simply won’t forget. I know you youngsters are all about bullet journaling and expressing yourselves by mapping out your lives, but really it’s just another way to procrastinate instead of getting to actual work."
For a second, I considered throwing my damn notebook in the buyer’s face, but that probably wouldn’t have helped my CV or the new job I’d have to look for starting tomorrow. At the very least, I should’ve screamed at him a little. Mainly that I didn’t care. That I had PMS. That my shitty shower in the shitty apartment I shared had broken and no dry shampoo in the world had fixed my hair this morning. That goddamn it, how the hell was I supposed to remember every phone number, every call my boss had to take, every art handling transport I’d organized if I couldn’t write it down somewhere.
Instead, I smiled. Died a little inside. Complimented him on the gift of his exceptional memory and asked whether he’d like another cup of coffee.
“What a dick.” Samantha murmured, more to herself than to me, once the guy had finally left. It made me snort under my breath. She usually didn’t say much, but when she did, it was straight to the point.
In the end, it didn’t matter that he was a dick. Didn’t matter that everyone at the gallery thought the art he’d bought from us over the last few months had been neither smart nor impressive purchases. Just expensive. And flashy.
“Doesn’t matter now.” I said with a sigh, glancing at the clock. It was Friday night and we were about to close. Since it was my birthday on Monday, I’d taken two days off, the longest break I’d had all year, and I was looking forward to being the lazy slob for a few days I was maybe always meant to be.
In silence, we answered a few last emails, tidied up the desks and counters so that potential buyers coming in over the weekend wouldn’t suspect anyone had actually been working here. A white desk. A huge iMac on it. That was all they needed to see. Folders, pens, and apparently especially agendas had to be hidden away in drawers.
At five to eight, I threw on my coat and Samantha gave me a tired smile. Probably happy for me. Just exhausted.
“Have fun then? Don’t get too wasted?”
“Oh…” I grinned, smug. “You have no idea. Gonna take a bottle of Moët with me from the bar and drink it in my bathtub after eating a huge pepperoni pizza by myself and dancing to only the finest of '90s Euro Trash.”
I couldn’t help it, I felt it necessary to give Sam a little demonstration, waving my arms up and down while swaying my hips in a way I probably wouldn’t have if I hadn’t had even a small audience. Or maybe two?
A quiet scoff behind me made me turn around fast, slowly lowering my arms. Sam bit her lower lip, and there I was, standing like an idiot in front of HIM, of all people.
Men didn’t have to be old to annoy me. Or white. Yes, those were usually the ones that pissed me off most, but no one had managed to do so quite like Kim Namjoon lately.
And now he was standing there, looking me up and down, stopping at my hair. The crazy, too-much-dry-shampoo-because-the-shower-broke hair.
“Nice.” he said, then looked over at Sam.
“I’d like to take a last look before Sunday’s opening, if that’s okay?”
I stood there, shoulders dropping, completely ignored.
“Uhm, actually, my babysitter has to leave in about an hour and I’ll need to be home by then.” Samantha replied, impressively calm.
“Of course.” Namjoon said with a slight smile. “Anyone else still around? Chris, maybe?”
Of course, Chris hadn’t been in today. It was Friday, and unless important guests had announced themselves, the gallery owner didn’t come in on Fridays.
“I’m afraid not. But maybe Charlotte has a few minutes?”
Well. Thanks. Thanks a lot. I felt a little betrayed.
“Wouldn’t want to keep anyone from their important Moët-Pizza-Dance Party plans.” Namjoon said before I could get a word in. His voice dropped to that hushed, deep disapproval, and he shoved his hands into the pockets of his rather expensive-looking coat. Silence. Then he just walked off toward the room where his exhibition had been set up all week, showing without saying it that I’d be staying, whether I liked it or not.
“Well, thank you for pushing me under the bus like that. Really appreciate it.”
“I’m so sorry. But I was serious. I can’t lose this sitter. She got Jamie to eat vegetables. Vegetables!”
Samantha was suddenly in a rush, grabbing her jacket and purse, showering me with promises to make it up to me. We both knew that wouldn’t happen and it wasn’t necessary. Staying late was normal. I just hated that it had to be today. And because of him.
I heard the door close behind Sam and stood there for a second before putting my bag down again. Usually, I would’ve followed the artist, asked if I could help somehow, but nah… My ego was bruised up enough already - especially remembering the little dance. I closed my eyes.
Fucking hated the guy. Always had. Well, not quite.
I’d thought he was cool for about five minutes when he first came in. We’d heard about him for a few months before. I think I’d even seen pictures of him at some point, but those were nothing compared to seeing him in real life.
He came in all cheekbones and an all-gray outfit, quick pace, observant gaze. Incredibly hot. He also completely ignored me.
That's how it started - a bruised ego. He couldn't know that it was my weak spot.
I had studied art and its management, but often felt more like a glorified secretary. My colleagues and I were doing all the behind-the-scenes work while Chris strolled in for a few hours, reaped all the money, and got the recognition. I knew this wasn’t unique to the art world, but it still got under my skin... I’d imagined life in my late twenties to be a bit more glamorous than living in a tiny apartment on the outskirts of the city... spending Friday night waiting for some rude artist dude to finally leave so I could lock up.
But what I probably hated most about him was that I admired him. Purely for his art. Really. Even the way he acted like I didn’t exist every time he came in didn’t stop me from admitting that - at least to myself. The stories behind his massive collages were clever, well thought-out. And even without knowing the context, the aesthetics alone were stunning. His work reached into something deep, and standing in front of it, I always had a hundred questions. Whenever he brought in a new piece, I was the first to sneak a peek in the back before it got hung.
"I don't get why you have such a problem with him. He’s just... quiet. I think he might even be shy. Stop being so sensitive and just ask him out already." I had almost strangled Sam for that comment a couple of weeks ago. Stop being so sensitive. What did that even mean? Words like that made me want to cry and scream at the same time, which would, of course, be perceived as even more sensitive. But when had being numb become something to aim for? I didn’t say anything because I liked Sam, and I knew what she meant. At least I thought I did. That maybe I wouldn’t care so much if I wasn’t actually attracted to Namjoon. I’d never said it, but she knew. She knew that if I didn’t care about something, I didn’t waste my time on it. But if something pissed me off? Yeah, there was usually more to it. I hated that she could read me that easily. Still, he was a dick. And I still just wanted to go home.
He took his sweet time. After an hour, I walked up to him, a little speech prepared about how he could come back first thing tomorrow. But when he turned around, he just lifted a hand between us like a barrier and turned away again. I hadn’t seen he was on the phone. "No, it’s nothing. Just one of the gallery employees." he said. And okay... if I wasn’t about to explode before, I definitely was now. I stood there for a moment, fuming, then walked back to the office area. My hand shook as I began switching off the gallery lights one by one. It wasn’t quite as satisfying as I’d hoped, but still felt good. Two minutes later, only the light above my head and the one by the door were left on. I figured I’d at least show him which way to go - he clearly needed help.
When Namjoon stepped out from one of the darker corners, he looked even more annoyed than usual. He squinted at me, his tongue pushing against the inside of his cheek. "Seriously?" he shouted, nearly walking into one of the flyer shelves. Not the first time I’d seen him do that, so maybe it wasn’t the lighting’s fault.
I felt oddly triumphant. By the time I had my coat on and turned off the last two lights, ready to finally lock up, Namjoon had just about made his way to the door. He was still on the phone, standing right in the open entrance. I gave a little groan when he didn’t even notice me standing behind him... or maybe he did and just didn’t care. Instead of clearing my throat or trying to squeeze past him, I just placed my hands on his back and gently pushed until his feet hit the pavement and he turned around. For a second, he looked like he was about to push back. Or trample me.
"Okay, what the hell is your problem, Charlotte?" His voice was hoarse, his eyes dark. God, he was hot. I hated him so much. "You." I replied, deadpan. Then I turned back to lock the two bolts on the door and punched in the alarm code. I couldn’t help but feel smug - apparently, he knew my name. I pictured him staring at the back of my head, flustered. Couldn’t be sure though. All I knew was that when I turned around, he was still there, arms crossed over his chest, mouth set in a straight line, watching me.
"Do you always act like that at work, around people who could get you in trouble?" He had a point. He could get me in trouble. But I was too fired up, my heart racing. "Is that a threat?" "An observation." "Only around the ones I don’t like." "Cool." "Great." "Enjoy the dance party. Sounds shit."
And with that, he turned around and walked off, coat flying open in the wind. Unfortunately, it made him look cool. I ABSOLUTELY HATED HIM. I didn’t say another word, just walked off in the opposite direction - only to realize minutes later that my car was the other way. Still, I kept walking for a bit before turning back. It took a while to calm down. Only cuddling up with my cat in front of some trash TV finally did the job. But by then, I’d realized something I wasn’t sure I liked. Yeah, I thought he was a prick. And yeah, I should’ve just played it cool. That would’ve been smarter in a lot of ways. But I’d also kind of... enjoyed myself. In the most fucked up way.
Seeing that stern look, that intense way he loomed over me... yeah, I’d piss him off on purpose. Literally.

🔥 Textually "political" superheroes, ala Green Arrow being a leftist and Flash being a conservative, Bastion being cancelled, etc.
Rapid-firing your specific examples- half the fun of Green Arrow is the tension between his leftism and his absurdly privileged status as a billionaire superhero. I wasn't actually aware Flash is a quote-unquote conservative- I'm assuming this came up in that godawful comic that tried to map out how the League would vote in the 08 election- but honestly this is kind of a "he's a white midwestern cop" moment, I feel like the politics associated with his job are always a little bit of an elephant in the room for the Flash Fandom. Bastion is his own post I've been meaning to make for a while, but the short version is that Bastion is a really, really funny dark comedy beat, if you choose to apply that lens.
Circling back to the Flash specifically, though- I get the sense these days that big-two superheroes are rarely characterized as meaningfully politically conservative, in the quotidian manner in which many, many real life people are. I certainly get why they shy away from that, I'm not saying that I want them to pick a couple leaguers who seem like The Type and have them start flying Gadsden flags, I'm just saying it has a certain impact on the verisimilitude of the setting when nobody on these teams has the generically shitty politics of that coworker you roll your eyes at or the Uncle you dread seeing at Thanksgiving. I think it was Memecucker that had a post a couple years ago about how you probably couldn't get away with anything analogous to that thing they once did where Hal Jordan was expressly racist as a character flaw that he had to overcome- you probably aren't gonna get an A-lister who's transphobic and has to be taught the error of their ways, for example. I'm not entirely certain how true that is- pretty true in my reading experience, but then again, there are a lot of comics, so maybe someone took a swing at that hornets nest and I just missed it and I've been talking out my ass for about 800 words.
(I did hear rumblings that they tried to do like, a coming-out-to-tepidly-accepting-parents metaphor with Franklin being a mutant during the Krakoa thing? I don't recall people talking about that beat in a positve light, which makes sense. "Have you tried not being a mutant" has always been a fraught analogy no matter which group is being referenced.)
Anyway my final takeaway is that indie cape things, by virtue of not having to keep everyone in their casts sympathetic and marketable in perpetuity, generally have way more leeway to depict superhero communities with a much wider spread of (potentially horrific) personal politics. Bastion being an example of that- if he showed up in Marvel or DC, he'd be, like, a bit character who shows up in a two-shot issue to get demolished or shown-up by Actual Superheroes (tm) but in Worm? Nope. There's no decades-long protagonist like Spider-Man or Batman through whose lens we view this setting by default. Bastion's as much a superhero as anyone else we've met, he's exactly as real, weighted exactly as much as the rest of them. And he sucks.
#thoughts#meta#superheroes#ask#ask game#I mean you get capes going “Hmm maybe I have unexamined assumptions about the efficacy of crime fighting as a concept” beats every two year#This intersects with what I'm thinking about in some way#And Ewing did some pointed respectability politics stuff in Mighty Avengers so that comes up also#effortpost

@starcrests asked:
Is there anything I should know if I just got sent to this world a few hours(?) ago?
Holy shit hi uh
Find a place to live. It doesn’t have to be permanent. In fact, don’t count on it being permanent.
Looks like you’re already connected to the internet so that’s good. Look at a map, figure out where you are in the world.
Think about what you can remember. Most fallers (documented here and at home anyway) lose a significant amount of their memories. I still don’t know why I didn’t?? Could be that I fell artificially.
Get an ID. You are going to want to legally exist if you’re going to be trapped in another dimension. Depending on where you are this might take a while. Figure out if you need more than just an ID card or paper of some kind, too. It’s different in different places. You’ll need that to open a bank account and other important things like get a job if they do background checks. The paperwork is worth it. Even if it’s weird when you come up as having no background and you have to explain your situation and see if there are recorded instances of falling in your universe because otherwise you might just not be believed which sucks major ass. Happened to my partner.
GET A JOB. You will want an income as soon as possible for things like buying food and paying rent if you’re not lucky enough to find someone who will let you crash on their couch for free.
Edit: BUY YOURSELF COMFORTABLE CLOTHING. YOU ARE GOING TO WANT A CHANGE OF CLOTHES. It’s easier if you’re wearing clothes you LIKE that are COMFORTABLE. Treat yourself you deserve it you literally just lost everything.
Basically take it as if you’re moving to another region. It will be extremely fucking stressful and you will feel lost and alone and like nothing matters and you will want to give up because honestly it’s a fucking bleak situation. Falling is scary and honestly? Bad. Bad experience. Really bad. Try to make the most of it?? I guess??? Maybe try to take it as a fresh chance??
Let yourself grieve. This one is important. Your life as you know it is forever changed and you will most likely never see your loved ones again. Which is fucking bleak. You have NO idea how much I cried in my first, what, half year after falling?? And even after that?? Because I was devastated. It’s fine to feel like shit. It’s a shitty situation. It sucks. Grief comes in waves and sometimes it just fucking bowls you over and you drown in it and you just have to deal with it and it sucks. Sorry.
Try to make new friends. Related to my last point, you’re gonna want a support system. You’ve just gone through a traumatic experience. Like, that’s hard to go through alone.
Once you think you’re stable enough, learn about where you are. More than you already have atp because it’ll let you discover wonderful things like an awful cave to not go into or a cute little café where you can find happiness or a concert hall where there’s an orchestra playing every Tuesday and sometimes they have plays or musicals. Yknow? Try to become familiar with where you live even if it hurts. Find little happy things. It helps with the uh. Grief.
Good fucking luck being a faller is hard and it’s so fucking rough but it gets better. Like all things like this it gets better. You’ll find your place.
#rotomblr#pkmn irl#ask#hartelore#long post#hall of shame#//for an actual good post for once. I want to be able to find this again.

Part 2 of The Right Price!
Riled Up
You had none. Zero. Absolutely no idea how you got here. Laswell introduced you again to them man you saved. The Captain. You saved. You babble on about how it was a fluke, how it was absolutely dumb luck but there's no insisting with Price. There's no damn way a rookie could take out four hostiles on his own on luck alone. He knows it and you sure as hell better start focusing on it because you CAN NOT turn down the pay raise.
You'd definitely never planned to be flying with a Captain to join his task force. And you definitely didn't plan to have the shit scared out of you by the huge Lieutenant waiting at the helipad to meet the two of you when you touched down. The guy was huge! He saw a little over eye to eye with Price and damn if you didn't stare at that skull mask a little too long. It wasn't your fault. Tall, dark, and secretive was everyone's thing. That's what you tell yourself when you realize the guy, Ghost, is eyeing you suspiciously.
"Easy there Ghost. New recruit."
"H-howdy, good to meet you sir. Roland Haven, sir." You stumble over your own words as he stands there unamused, your hand out awkwardly before you give up and let it fall to your side. You suck in an embarrassed puff of air through your teeth.
"Don't take it personal, kid." Is all Price gives you as he claps you on the shoulder, pulling you forward with him past Ghost and into the base. You still feel his eyes burning into your spine but you don't let yourself look back again and focus on the direction your pushed in. You get shown to a small barren room, a simple bed, dresser, desk, and chair as Price nods you in.
"This'll be your room from now on lad. Get cozy, proper intros start in thirty." Giving him a nod he heads off as you set your small bag on the bed. You didn't have much with you but you do take a little time to throw your clothes in the dresser and drop your laptop and headphones on the desk. A deep sigh leaves your lips as you look around again and wonder how you got yourself this fucking deep. It doesn't really matter how anymore though, you definitely need the money, and you're not one to turn down a fast track past dealing with other shitty recruits like in your last two teams.
Before long you find yourself heading down the hall following after where Price went to the meeting room. You didn't have anything else to do so heading here ten minutes early was fine by you. Looking around the room you make a note of the layout, wandering around and glancing at maps and a few images of what you can guess is the entirety of the 141. Your skin nearly falls off your bones when you hear a gruff voice call out loud and clear somewhere behind you and you thank your horror game conditioning for keeping you from physically flinching.
"Someone's early ay?" You glance over your shoulder towards the opposite side of the room and notice Ghost once again. He stands by the back wall, arms crossed over his chest, the sockets of the skull baklava on his face look empty with how dark that end of the room is. There's a chill that runs up your spine as you turn to give him a salute, unsure of how to proceed.
"Uh. Yes sir. Wasn't really sure what else ta do." He stares at you as he steps forward, you can see the glint of the lights on his eyes now at least. Makes him look less like death but it means he's that much closer to you. Out of the frying pan you think to yourself. He stares for a long while before nodding and moving to lean on the large rectangular table.
"Right well now you wait with me then." He gestures a hand over to one of the seats opposite him and you hesitate before you get yourself stepping towards it.
"So, uh. Ghost huh? How'd you get that name?" His eyes narrow at you as you sit and you can't help but swallow air.
"Listen 'ere recruit. I ain't in the mood to lead a green'orn around 'ere, an' I sure as shite ain't gun'na let you get anyone on this team killed. You best keep up or you will be lef' behind." Another gulp as his dark eyes bore into yours. You raise your hands in a mock surrender as you nod.
"Understood sir. I ain't looking to ruffle any feathers." He scoffs but doesn't add anything else to his rant so you lower your hands to your lap and sit in a silence so loud you feel like your breath is annoying him. You know better then to piss off a giant you couldn't even hear so you keep any snark behind your lips, rare for you to keep quiet but Ghost didn't know that yet. It's a long ten minutes before you hear footfalls getting closer to the room, time to meet the team.

Lake Laogai
This Lake had better have Appa in it. With little water wings on.
Skipping the commentary as usual.
The Previously On section suggests that a whole lot of plot threads are about to crash into each other. Strap in folks.
Lefty Sokka!
Beat up Sokka quota fulfilled by his sister's critique of his art skills. It's not like he had paper to practice with at the South Pole.
Sometimes I forget that Aang is 12, then he does something like attempt to rescue his pet from a nefarious city-wide conspiracy of silence with lost cat posters.
"Good tea is its own reward." That means no, he isn't paid enough.
Remember what I said in my last post about Iroh bringing too much attention to himself?
"senior executive assistant manager" someone on the writing team has worked retail I see. Nothing like meaningless promotions with no raise attached! It's right up there with employee pizza party.
I have to pause here and point something out. This whole scene with Iroh? This is an adult fantasy. I don't mean dirty, I mean this whole scene was put in specifically to appeal to the adults who got roped in to watching this kids' show by their children. A rich man walks through the door of your shitty retail job, immediately spots your natural greatness, and offers you a much better paying job with unlimited creative freedom and a better house to go with it? Find me a burnt out retail worker who hasn't conjured up this fantasy five times a shift.
And so the plots come crashing back together. This won't end badly.
"patience really pays off" I checked. He waited literally three seconds.
Shout out to Toph in the background playing catch with a ball she can't see. Casual flex of epic proportions.
Remind me never to go to Lake Laogai. Sounds like it's lousy with Ju Dees.
So the Ju Dees don't know about each other? Because she seems honestly confused. Does Ju Dee think she's the only Ju Dee? What happens if two Ju Dees run into each other in the street?
Posters are illegal but I haven't heard a peep about recarving a bunch of fields into a zoo.
This is maybe the second time Aang's blown up over Appa. Frankly he deserves more blow ups about the whole situation.
I don't think knocking down walls will help find Appa, but I applaud Toph's spirit.
They took out a whole wall and then exit by the door anyways. That's funny.
I really hate this guy, but I have to admit that he may be the first truly competent villain of the series.
'The Jasmine Dragon' also lets anyone with half a brain know that you're Fire Nation. Try the Jasmine Badgermole instead.
Zuko really can't catch a break, huh? He wasn't happy being a tea server, but at least he was resting. But every time he gets five minutes to himself, the main plot reappears to drag him back into the action, whether he wants to or not. Although he hasn't figured out that he doesn't want to be dragged back yet.
Every line of dialogue in this scene is a good point. Zuko's right, Iroh's right. The Zuko's right again, then Iroh's right again.
YES YES YES GET HIS ASS
That was satisfying!
I'm not understanding why Sokka is the voice of reason here. Is he incapable of holding a grudge? He's the one that had all the animosity with Jet to begin with. Shouldn't it be Aang who wants to hear him out?
Toph is a living lie detector now? I can't think of an example off the top of my head, but I'm sure that could have come in handy previously. Any other incredibly useful skills we should know about?
Jet is oddly defensive for someone who claims to know he did wrong.
Ever get so excited that your spine malfunctions?
Sokka just has a metre long map in his pocket. Good friend to have in a pinch.
Avatar first! Katara is rude to an old person!
I'm going to have fun with Toph's new ability.
Toph, you have never been more right. It is the worst city ever. You are really shining this episode.
I know this is a serious scene, but I need to point out that Jet's guyliner is on point.
This shot is jarringly out of place. I think it's because it both black and white, and live action. Those have to be real clouds.
So the Blue Spirit can talk after all. Careful, your Zuko is showing.
Wow Zuko is good at sewing. And fast too.
Sokka is having far too much fun with this whole 'prompt Jet's memory' thing. Maybe he does have a bit of a grudge after all.
Katara can reverse brainwashing now too? Everyone's levelling up this episode.
This scene with the planks is a very cool and disorienting visual.
Didn't have 'the gaang breaks into a brainwashing facility' on my ATLA bingo card.
Pretty.
OMIGOD IT'S AP- did Zuko just break the fourth wall?
Everyone always forgets to look up.
So this fight is going to be Toph v. all of the Dai Li while everyone else tries not to get in Toph's way.
That's a boat.
Toph could probably take all these guys out faster if she wasn't having to constantly break off to save everyone else from them.
The Dai Li prancing up walls is a really cool visual. It's very Ty Lee of them.
I love watching her work.
Why don't you let Long Feng escape? He's no longer threatening you, and you're down there to rescue Appa. Just let him go.
The security on Lake Laogai is a joke.
Big words from someone who also had no plan whatsoever at the North Pole.
Zuko knows that Iroh's right. He knows, and that's important. I don't think Iroh is saying anything that Zuko hasn't thought and then hurriedly pretended to have never thought about before. It's why he says 'stop it' rather than being completely confused as to what Iroh is referring to.
Poor Appa's like 'can you have a crisis of self after you free me please?'
'You've chosen your own demise." No. You chose it for him. That's some top tier deflection/victim blaming right there.
Longshot can talk!
That's one hell of a set up and pay off re: Toph's lie detecting abilities.
Poor Jet. A double tragedy: to be likeable only when you're brainwashed, and to dedicate your life to wiping out the Fire Nation yet being killed by the Earth Kingdom.
Hi Appa. It's about time buddy.
Shockingly in character for Appa's first actions to be to single handedly save the Gaang from a threat.
You skip that bastard like a stone.
Everyone go and listen to the sound Appa makes when he spits out Long Feng's shoe. It's delightful.
I am framing this.
And this too.
I can tell there's some shmymbolism here, but it's gone right over my head.
Final Thoughts
Appa is back. The Gaang has Appa back. I have Appa back. Ok. I can relax now. With any luck, this means we can leave Ba Sing Se.
This episode felt like City of Walls and Secrets, Part 2. I think it was a good decision to have a couple of episodes between the two, but I think there would be some tonal whiplash if you binged this section of season 2. Which wouldn't have been a problem for a show designed to air once a week, so it's a moot point.
So Zuko freed Appa from his chains, and presumably pointed him in the direction of a door or something. Or maybe not; Appa has a ridiculously hard head, he could have busted his way out. Either way, Zuko broke the chains. Thanks Zuko!
In season 1, Zuko finds the Avatar the world had lost. In season 2, Zuko finds the Sky Bison the Avatar had lost. So in season 3, Zuko will find something Appa has lost. I wonder what that will be?
Jet being killed by the Earth Kingdom is so deliciously ironic, and tragic, yet very in character for the Earth Kingdom's approach to this war. It's also literally this:
Smellerbee and Longshot have really gotten the short end of the stick over and over this season. They were the only ones to decide to stick with Jet. Presumably they were the only ones who believed that he had had a legitimate change of heart. And they were kind of wrong. They get to Ba Sing Se only for Jet to immediately backslide way past even where he was at his worst in Season 1. He completely discounts and dismisses their legitimate concerns for his methods and his overall health. Then Jet gets arrested and disappears for two (?) weeks. So what do they do now? Get jobs? Steal so they don't starve? Then suddenly Jet's back but he doesn't even remember them. Then suddenly Jet's dead. The whole point of coming to Ba Sing Se just died, in a way that shows very clearly that their desire to help with the war is not welcome at all in the city. So what now? Do they leave and try to fight in the war from outside the walls? Do they settle down and try to forget about the war? Things did spiral completely out of Jet's control once the Dai Li got involved, but you have to admit that he's left his only remaining friends up a creek.
Sokka had some good jokes but was oddly ok with this episode's events. Toph had some great lines and got to shine with a new skill that any writer with half a brain will bring back in future episodes. She felt like the audience substitute this episode, which is usually Sokka's role. Toph was episode MVP for sure. Poor Aang took a bit of a back seat this episode. Zuko finally hit the crisis point, and may well have made his first indisputably correct decision of the series. But, as previous episodes have gone out of their way to show me that Zuko being good always goes badly for Zuko, I'm sure freeing Appa will somehow come back to bite him.
Iroh's question of "who are you? And what do you want?" was Zuko's entire character arc this season. He took a shot at answering the "who are you?" portion in Zuko Alone, and sort of halfway got there before messing up at the end of the episode. As for the "what do you want?" Zuko will tell you (often and repeatedly) that he wants his honour back. But I think he just wants to go home. The thing is, I strongly suspect that the home Zuko wants to return to hasn't existed since his mother left, if it ever existed at all. Which means that while "who are you?" has an answer Zuko can work towards, "what do you want?" has an answer that is kind of impossible. So Zuko is going to have to learn to want something new.
RIP Jet. Your life was fucked to Hell long before you were old enough to try and salvage it. You'll probably be missed by more people than you strictly deserve. War sucks, amirite?

Vincent for the ask game 👀
from the character breakdown ask game:
I got two asks for Vincent, so this will be the answer for both~
How I feel about this character
I love him, plain and simple.
I remember watching a friend play through OG years ago, before I played it, idly going through the strategy guide he had while he was bumbling around the overworld map, and seeing the Nibelheim section - and the guide going over how to get Vincent. Pointed right at the screenshot of him standing on the back of his coffin and told my friend, "you ARE getting him, right??"
Both my dad and I remember when I pulled a literal all-nighter to get Vincent when I played - from 5 PM to 5 AM, my poor dad checking on me right before he left for work just as Vincent did That Backflip, and his deadpan "...this is who you played all night for?"
Me: Dad, I love him.
Dad: ...please go to sleep after you save your game.
But I honestly adore just about everything about him. His overall character designs ping my love of vampires and gothic artstyles (though he is not a vampire), and his character arc in all its tragedy and redemption - he's gone through so much in his life, death, and existence now, and I love that he finally triumphs over it all and is on the way to finally being able to LIVE HIS LIFE, post-Dirge. He's helped me get through some really shitty times (to put it lightly) in my life, he's introduced me to some of my best friends... I owe him a lot~
I'm excited (and a little nervous/reserved) to see his storyline in the Remake continuity. We've gotten little tastes of it with his initial reactions to the group, THAT BATTLE (that yes, I cried through the first time, and teared up at the Rebirth concert), the design of the mansion basement (GODS IT ACHES ;; ), and the side-quests he's involved in... I want to see him get his showdown with Hojo. I want to see him starting to come to grips with everything now that he's decided to leave the mansion for good.
I want to hug him, goddammit (and I kinda get to in a few weeks when I go to C2E2 lol).
All the people I ship romantically with this character
Vincent/Reilena, aka VinRei. Yes, she is my OC, and has been my brainchild for over 20 years (watch me age myself).
Allow me to share a plate from this bountiful buffet I have cultivated, for I am a canon/oc shipper who makes her own food and will always welcome a new seat to the table~

Though I know now this makes me look incredibly biased, if we go strictly by canon, the only romantic ships I have with him are both unrequited - Vincent/Lucrecia (though I headcanon that they definitely had an emotional affair, and remained friends up until he was murdered, hence his initial "?!?!?!" when he discovers what Lucrecia's done to him as well in DoC), and Vincent/Reeve (Reeve is crushing HARD, alas).
My non-romantic OTP for this character
Platonic Valenwind gives me SUCH goddamn life, and Dirge made me SO happy when it revealed that Vincent and the Highwinds are still close friends, to the extent that Shera worries about his well-being, and Cid talks about "grabbing some cold ones" after the Deepground crisis. The mental image I have of Vincent, Cid, and Shera on a moonlit porch, stargazing and shooting the shit while having drinks is priceless.
My unpopular opinion about this character
I don't like the spikiness of his hair in Rebirth; give him back his original/AC or Dirge hair, dammit.
In all seriousness though - I don't like his appearance in Before Crisis (I don't like most of BC as a whole, but that's a ramble for another day). Instead of giving us a potential flashback to his time as a Turk, actually showing us what he did before he was sent to his death Nibelheim, we instead get yet another person waking him up before the OG just for him to give the location of a materia and for shippers to squeal "BUT THEY WERE ~PARTNERS~" because if you have two men partnered together in the Turks, they're obviously fucking.
Yes, I'm being sarcastic.
It feels like an unnecessary cameo done purely to snag fans of his from the OG. I would have rather the Player Turk peeked in, get freaked out a la Zack, and been like "LET'S LOOK SOMEWHERE ELSE."
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
SHOW US VINCENT AS A TURK.
SHOW HIM ACTUALLY DOING TURK THINGS.
Short of that, please give us ALL of his Limit Breaks in R3, SE. Do not soften them either - you gave us a big, beautiful beast with Galian (I said what I said), I am certain you're going all out with Chaos, I want to see Death Gigas and Hellmasker given a loving glow-up as well. Really get into those horror movie, Gothic influences.
#final fantasy vii#vincent valentine#i love him a very normal amount lol#thanks for the ask!#runicmagitek#phantasmacabre#since you were the other one that asked for vincent lol#psa: these are opinions feel free to disagree

today i will be showing how i take a map from 0 to 1
I start here... the humble blank room. I already did all the boring stuff like laying down the lines and filling the floor a long time ago and I'm not gonna redo it but basically grids are your friend. Know the tile size and how tiles are laid out, it's absolutely crucial for smooth map making...
Using the power of my grid and also assets from other already finished maps, I start to pack as much space as possible with shapes. I try not to make too many pinch points, I want the player to be able to reach most places without issue. I also make sure to draw all my furniture on a new layer instead of directly onto the wall/floor layer.
After some time, I filled in all the colors and did my simple shading. In terms of detail, I always tell myself "do whatever you want". If I feel like it needs more, I'll give it more. Now that the map is ready, I use my grid to capture tiles that I want to appear 'above' the player for that 3d layering effect. I put them on their own document and set everything up. Now I'm done! I'll just playtest to get a feel for my new space and...
Oh no.
I don't like it. Sometimes too-strict adherence to the grid makes things look downright bad. Thankfully, I put all my furniture on its own layer so moving things is easy. I'll move some of the pieces around and change the way I think about the 3d objects. Unfortunately, for a character that's 2 tiles tall, I can't have any 3d layering on objects that are less than 3 tiles tall, otherwise their heads get chopped off.
You can barely tell the difference here besides the couch, but in-game, it's like night and day. But one last thing.
Clutter and garbage. Honestly, I feel like it still needs more. But I've run out of ideas of what to put. Maybe a small shelf by the couch, maybe a bookshelf in place of the garbage can on the diagonal wall. And every shitty breakroom needs a vending machine. It also looks especially empty with no people there.
And just for reference
Here's my grid. Now go make a video game.
