What are ants?! (29/6/24)

I've been watching ant behavior for a few weeks and I have no idea how they work anymore.

I have no idea what is a mimic and what is an actual ant. We live in a simulantion.

WHO LIKES GOSSIP:

I know in my heart that the Mourn Watch is full of nosy academics who know about everyone else's business. Simulanteously, everyone in the Mourn Watch will take important secrets to their literal grave. I think these two ideas can and should coexist.

Roslyn is very curious by nature and likes to know as much as she can. However, I think she mainly likes the novelty of gossiping with her new friends. She didn't really have a lot of friends before the Veilguard so sharing information with others for fun is a delight.

Marianna would argue that she doesn't gossip, it's her job to know everything. Secrets are a currency for the Crows. But Mari craves the tea, she wants to know all the juicy details.

Seren does not care about gossip, but she can also get drawn into listening to it. Like if you're watching something on TV and your dad walks by and starts kind of standing there watching it, but insists he doesn't want to watch it.

VICES:

Listen, I'm just going to word vomit and hopefully some of the things I say count as vices. The nature of Rook is that they "tend to think in straight lines" and are "experts on trouble" so let's count those for all of them. They can be impulsive and sometimes a little reckless in the pursuit of results, but that's why Varric picked them. Also they can't swim.

Roslyn loves beautiful things. She loves her grave gold and other jewelry, she likes nice clothes, but doesn't have the means and also the world is ending so. She craves acceptance, but also can't seem to stop being reckless. She doesn't really have family, and she yearns.

If you ask Marianna what her vices are she would just start listing vices and say all of them. So one is a flair for dramatics. In actuality, she is a Crow and a De Riva so one is pride. Also wrath. Her "bad" habits include not letting things go and secretly liking the romantic bits of the serials in the papers.

Hmm I need to ponder Seren's vices more. she wants to kiss neve so bad

Siento que ya no hay nada de eso entre nosotros y que lo realmente concreto del fin de nuestra amistad es que ya no seamos capaces de descifrarnos mutuamente los dolores.

Pannelli solari in regolite per la base lunare

Sulla Luna, il fotovoltaico è fatto di regolite, test con materiale simulante hanno raggiunto un'efficienza del 10%. Sul nostro satellite il Sole non manca, e nemmeno il materiale per fabbricare pannelli fotovoltaici. I ricercatori dell'Università di Potsdam hanno ideato nuove celle a base di vetro di regolite e perovskite, un cristallo a basso costo molto efficiente nel trasformare la luce in energia elettrica. Potrebbero essere fabbricati sul posto riducendo il peso al lancio del 99 per cento e, con esso, i costi di trasporto. Lo sanno bene gli astronauti delle missioni Apollo: la regolite si attacca ovunque, sbuffa e si solleva dal suolo coprendo la visuale e rendendo complicate anche le manovre di allunaggio e decollo. È un pericolo per elettronica, per gli strumenti, e per qualunque oggetto sul quale riesca ad aderire – cosa che le riesce benissimo, a causa della sua connaturata carica elettrostatica. Insomma, un problema da non sottovalutare quando si progetta una permanenza a lungo termine dell’uomo sulla Luna. E se il nemico non puoi sconfiggerlo, meglio allora cercare di portarlo dalla tua parte: uno studio pubblicato nella rivista Device di Cell Press presenta l’ideazione di celle solari fatte di polvere lunare “simulata”. Queste celle convertono la luce solare in energia in modo efficiente, resistono ai danni delle radiazioni e riducono la necessità di trasportare materiali pesanti nello spazio, e non da ultimo costituiscono una soluzione a una delle maggiori sfide dell’esplorazione spaziale: trovare fonti di energia affidabili.

In seguito, rover o astronauti automatizzati installeranno le celle solari prodotte per alimentare future abitazioni sulla Luna o addirittura città. Crediti: Sercan Özen «Le celle solari oggi utilizzate nello spazio sono straordinarie e raggiungono efficienze del 30 per cento o addirittura del 40 per cento, ma questa efficienza ha un prezzo», spiega Felix Lang dell’Università di Potsdam, in Germania, che ha guidato il progetto. «Sono molto costose e relativamente pesanti, perché utilizzano vetro o una spessa pellicola come copertura. È difficile giustificare il trasporto di tutte queste celle nello spazio». Invece di trasportare le celle solari dalla Terra, dunque, in vista della costruzione di una base lunare permanente la soluzione più sensata sarebbe utilizzare i materiali disponibili sulla Luna stessa. E qui entra in gioco la regolite: l’obiettivo è sostituire il vetro terrestre con quello ricavato dalla regolite lunare, riducendo così la massa di lancio di un veicolo spaziale del 99,4 per cento, e abbattendo il 99 per cento dei costi di trasporto. Come dicevamo, per mettere alla prova l’idea i ricercatori non hanno usato la vera regolite lunare, bensì un materiale progettato per simulare la polvere che copre il nostro satellite. Materiale che hanno poi fuso per creare il vetro con cui hanno costruito le celle solari. L’altro materiale impiegato, assieme al vetro lunare, per il coating delle celle è la perovskite, un cristallo abbastanza economico e facile da produrre, ma soprattutto in grado di assorbire uno spettro più ampio di frequenze rispetto al silicio e molto efficiente nel trasformare la luce solare in elettricità. Secondo i calcoli, in uno scenario simile alla base lunare immaginata dall’Esa, portando sulla Luna un kg di precursori di perovskite, insieme a circa 1,12 tonnellate di regolite raccolte sul posto, è quanto occorre per fabbricare circa 400 metri quadrati di celle solari. «Se si riduce il peso del 99 per cento, non c’è bisogno di avere celle solari ultra-efficienti al 30 per cento, basta produrne di più sulla Luna», sottolinea Lang. «Inoltre, le nostre celle sono più stabili contro le radiazioni, mentre le altre si degradano nel tempo». Il vetro standard, infatti, si scurisce lentamente nello spazio, bloccando la luce solare e riducendo l’efficienza. Ma il vetro lunare ha una tonalità marrone naturale dovuta alle impurità della polvere lunare che lo costituisce, non si scurisce ulteriormente e rende le celle più resistenti alle radiazioni. E stando a quanto riportato dagli autori è anche più facile da fabbricare, poiché non richiede un processo di purificazione complesso e per fondere la regolite basterebbero le temperature raggiunte concentrando la luce solare. L’efficienza ottenuta, per ora, è del 10 per cento, ma con un vetro lunare più chiaro che lascia passare più luce si pensa di poter raggiungere il 23 per cento.

Il primo, la gravità lunare: minore rispetto a quella terrestre, potrebbe cambiare il modo in cui si forma il vetro lunare. Inoltre, i solventi attualmente utilizzati per lavorare la perovskite non funzionano nel vuoto della Luna. Infine, gli sbalzi di temperatura causati dall’assenza dell’atmosfera potrebbero minacciare la stabilità dei materiali. Insidiosa la regolite, dicevamo all’inizio. Eppure, trasformarla in vetro per pannelli fotovoltaici non è la prima applicazione utile che gli scienziati hanno pensato per questa polvere extraterrestre: già si è pensato a un metodo per estrarne acqua da usare come combustibile, e anche di costruirci dei mattoni per fabbricare strutture in loco. Per scoprire se le celle solari prodotte con la polvere lunare sono veramente valide, però, bisognerà lanciare un esperimento su piccola scala direttamente sulla Luna e vedere cosa succede davvero.
