So I watched Wakanda Forever and I have INSANE blorbo feelings for literally every single character in that movie
Like we started watching and as soon as Namor started explaining his backstory I was just like “oh shit I need to emotionally disconnect from this movie or this fucking guy will end up occupying my every waking thoughts for 2-3 business months and I got other shit to do”
Unfortunately,

mtas spoilers abound, with the knives out patch.
—-
—-
Making sure to keep these separated before I actually talk about it.
—-
—-
Ok, so spoilers time. What the dick Matilda! Also Miguel and pen are also traitors?! I didn’t expect them to actually be the baddies! And in turn that makes me feel so sad for burgess because that innocent and naive fella truly believed them. But he also when to take things in stride, for the time being. I can only imagine how he feels, with everyone that works for a seemingly righteous cause suddenly are revealed for have a more skewed view on it. I get it, change and all that, but boy, it’s been tough on him and everyone else in sand rock. And also I thought burg would had been the bad guy because he seems so innocent but lmao. Lol. He isn’t, atm I think. Lol nah I am willing to trust him.
It does seem that pen is ummarriageable in the game, but can be romance. I’m hoping that Miguel can be married, because I genuinely like him, because I get it, ya know? But this isn’t really for me, because I chose Qi, my smart as hell scientist with very low social skills, and he is perfect. He even acknowledges his flaws and wants to do better for the builder too, when married! So cute!
But I think it’s a shame that pen can’t be married. I’m sure there are many fans who would be bothered by this. At least one person has a chance with a redemption arc tho, which is Miguel, but let’s see how that plays out.
Oh and Elsie has a glow up! She looks like her beta self which is such a cool touch, and I love it! I hope to see more of this side of her now from here on! She is a good gal!
Also I do want to fight Logan again at some point. Maybe when he gets officially added to the roster of romanceable characters that it could happen. He is so much fun to fight against! And I want to fight pen again for no reason. Than shenanigans.
While yes there are a lot of bugs and errors, hell my marriage ceremony didn’t work unfortunately, I do enjoy this game a lot. It has a lot of potential that I hope gets better overtime esp the bugs and glitches.
Gotta wait tho until summer. Hehe. That’s fine by me.
Ya know there is one other thing I want to talk about, and that is Miguel’s appearance. Compared to the rest of the cast, he is the least attractive, with some features that do bother me, like his small hands, but I like how he looks tbh. There is quite a lot, mostly anatomy wise, that bothers me, but I still really like him because he is interesting as a character. I also think his face is fine, but the head body ratio bothers me quite a bit. Idk how to explain it. But it’s fine, I guess. If it wasn’t for the fact that he is a pastor, and I used to have very religious family members that worked as one, there is a lot about him that reminds me of my own family and church experiences, I’d choose him. He seems like he could be an utter sweetheart, with an unfortunately skewed view of the world, which is fair. And I think it’s interesting personally. But I may just be rambling. Hehehe.

I wanna talk about this episode
Tumblr media
Okay so I’ve been seeing ‘Masters of all time’ getting Flack lately as one of DP’s bad episodes.  Which don’t get me wrong.  I see flaws.  They really missed out on giving Jack his own creative ghost form instead of just slapping him with Vlad’s and the sickness in this episode pretty much just works however the plot needs it to.  Having said that, this is one of my favorite episodes.  Allow me to gush over why:
1. Jack and Maddie having another nerdy hobby beyond ghost hunting, ‘80′s nostalgia’ is super cute.  I love that they start this episode giving Danny his wallet, a big hug, and telling him they love him, It’s just, 😘
2.  Danny coming up with the idea to use get his ghostly ally who specializes in time travel to make it so his arch nemesis doesn’t get super powers is smart on Danny’s part.  Make it so no one get’s ecto acne. It goes wrong because of course it does, We gotta have time travel shenanigans.  Also I totally can see why Clockwork would not let Danny try again. The guy has big “Don’t involve me in your shit” vibes.
3. What this episode says about Jack. When he get’s ghost powers, what does he do?  First he tries to be a superhero just like his son, but it doesn’t go well because Jack is on his own and he doesn’t do well alone, hence why he didn’t get too far as a ghost hunter without Maddie.
4. His best friend ditched him when he got sick and ran off with the love of his life, the exact same dick move he pulled on Vlad in the OG timeline that Vlad deemed as unforgivable.  But Jack doesn’t focus on hating Vlad.  His biggest concern is that he’s not good enough for Maddie now that he’s part ghost.
5. What it says about Maddie.  Jack never stole Maddie, she just chose him.  Even when Vlad has no obstacles in his way, he can’t get Maddie to fall for him without lying to her, and when she does choose him because she thinks he’s the only safe option, she’s not happy.  She has to suppress her passions because she doesn’t want to deal with Vlad getting upset over it.
6. This episode solidifies that Vlad loves the idea of Maddie and not her as an actual person. He makes her live the life HE wants for her.  He doesn’t respect her real passions.
7.  Power reveals who a person really is deep inside.  It was never the accident that made Vlad the person that he was.  He always felt like he was entitled to Maddie’s love, and when he got his big do over to have everything go right, he still uses manipulation and control.  (Now I know that people want a redemption arc for Vlad but I think that can only happen when he hits his rock bottom.  He can’t scheme anymore.  The people he’d normally pin blame on are gone, there’s nothing to do BUT be a better person.)
8. Jack protecting Danny from Vlad because he recognizes how evil his former friend really is.  Don’t tell me that didn’t feel good.

Not Agaaain! - Or, Hawks Will Have To Choose Twice Over
Tumblr media
Large parts of this meta are taken from a conversation with the always-wise @aspoonofsugar, who is herself not a huge BNHA fan, but keeps up with it mostly so that I can blather to her constantly.
I think I’ve already been quite clear that I think it an odd narrative choice to teaming up with the hero commission to save Dabi. While the text has strongly indicated Touya will be saved eventually, I don’t quite see how the top three heroic symbols can play a role.
Shouto himself to Enji that he cannot earn his family back through being a hero, but instead by being a father:
Tumblr media
Like, does anybody think Enji should be able to have it all--the esteem of heroes and the commission and his family? When the entire narrative has set it up as either/or, as a choice Enji will have to make since he made it previously and chose... poorly?
Even in this chapter, Best Jeanist is focused on what to say to the public, not on, you know, the actual revelations. It’s a focus on leaving the past in the past, because “things are different now.”
Tumblr media
Except that attitude is precisely what Dabi was calling out:
Tumblr media
And it isn’t only stated by Dabi, but by Natsuo:
Tumblr media
And also by Deku himself:
Tumblr media
Which isn’t to say that isn’t where Dabi’s arc will probably go eventually (moving on) but is to say the wounds from Dabi’s past are still very much festering, and literally so.
Tumblr media
You gotta treat these wounds, not leave them to heal on their own, because some wounds are too deep to heal on their own. Touya most likely fell into the wrong hands after burning in the forest (Ujiko seeming a likely suspect) that might have fixed him up in the present, but did nothing to address the actual circumstances that led to him self-immolating in the woods. He needs to learn emotional regulation and have his pain acknowledged, not ignored (the symbolism is again very literal):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So how do we do this? Because the heroes right now seem to be sweeping things under the rug again which worked so well the first time. And maybe this is supposed to happen and we have to suspend disbelief because BNHA is kinda like that sometimes. But I’m not so sure, and frankly I hope not because it’s... not awesome writing, and I’d like BNHA to be well done.
So how does this connect to Twice and Hawks? Well, Hawks is clearly thinking about Twice in these panels:
Tumblr media
However, Hawks still isn’t realizing his own role in what happened; it’s simplistic and self-centered, which has kinda been Hawks’ thing since his introduction.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hawks directly states that he’s projecting onto the Todorokis this chapter:
Tumblr media
Now, projection isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and I don’t doubt he sincerely wants to help his mentor. I do doubt his rationale. To quote Sugar-chan,
instead of fixing his own issues, he is trying to fix his childhood idol. I think the revelations about Endeavor have actually shaken Hawks, but he is not acknowledging them.
He’s not getting to the route of his own problems: the hero commission exploiting him and his own choice to kill Twice.
Let’s examine why Hawks seems to have latched onto Twice so hard. They have quite a bit in common: they grew up traumatized and impoverished, but one had their quirk lead others to save them and one did not. Twice was also mentally unstable and believed he was the cause of the League’s problems (self-centered in a sense, but not in a negative connoted way); it sounds not only similar to Hawks, but to Tomie. I mean, he legit makes Twice the exact same offer the hero commission gave him and Tomie.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hawks killing what represents the part of himself that wasn’t saved does not typically indicate good things in terms of character development. Unlike when Enji killed High End, Twice is not Hawks’ negative qualities, but is instead also his good qualities. Hawks even says he wants to be like Twice:
Tumblr media
Hawks’ having killed Twice might very well impede his goal to help the Todorokis. Dabi and the League don’t have any reason to trust Hawks and have some very good reasons not to; double-agent role aside, Hawks offered a chance to Twice and then when Twice didn’t take it (because Hawks wasn’t actually listening to what Twice wanted: to save his friends), Hawks stabbed him in the back, quite literally.
Tumblr media
Dabi was even there for that; why would he trust Hawks is genuine? Why would he trust his family if they’re working with Hawks?
There’s little indication that Hawks sees seeking to save Touya as anything different than his quest to save Twice, and writing-wise, he kind of shouldn’t. Hawks has had absolutely no consequences to deter him from following the same route. Unless the past only dies for Hawks or he’s gotten from Point A to Point B of realizing the past matters offscreen (since he’s literally said it doesn’t since his introductory chapter):
Tumblr media
Given the prominence of Twice’s death (not just in the narrative, but it had a volume cover devoted to it; you’d think it’d be pivotal) this does not seem like awesome writing, so I’m going to assume that this is setting up a future conflict for Hawks rather than resolving one.
So what happens when Dabi refuses to be saved, which seems almost certain to happen? (Also for people who might be nervous about that: rejecting redemption several times is a staple of a redemption arc.) What will Hawks do then?
How will that differ from what Shouto would do? (If Shouto’s endgame would be to follow Hawks’ lead, then it doesn’t make much sense to have Hawks admiring Shouto instead of the other way around, nor for a character introduced halfway through to demonstrate how to solve the problem midway through the story when killing villains isn’t really new or unique).
Tumblr media
Unless Hawks gets those consequences, why would he make a different choice than the one he made last time he was driven into a corner?

episode 209 spoilers below
I'm so late today but here it is
I love EJ, he's finally learning to be happy. I'm so proud.
Ms Jenn = every boomer during zoom calls, like jeez yes we can hear you stop shouting at me.
LOVE THE SUBTLE JOKE ABOUT QUARANTINE "these dark times" "you mean spring break?"
ah yes, remember when we thought covid was just gonna give us a longer spring break? good times
SEBLOS
damn the passive aggressiveness from Carlos and the absolutely over it tone from seb✋
CASWELL COUSINS!!!!! THEY'RE THE BEST!!!!
we needed more if this kind of goofiness for the first part of season 2 that only such an iconic duo can provide.
old old movies-
is it even that old, or is Nini being a gen alpha rn-
i choose to imagine EJ being scared of the movie and hiding in Ashlyn's shoulder while she keeps a straight face and then EJ pretending to be tough afterwards
aww redlyn are soulmates.... yknow, if gingers had souls
(please ignore me)
y'all saw how EJ's face *lit up* when Gina logged on? how dare you tell me he doesn't like her
ofc she's no damsel in distress, she's Gina porter, she's amazing.
so do we think she'd be the type to just glare at suspicious people? or bark at them
do they not know that Rini broke up? or is Ms Jenn just wanting Nini to suffer through her heartbreak to make her a better actress....
speaking of, why is Nini in the call? she's not in the show anymore. Unless she is, even after the rose and the song got cut, which would be so unfair to all those that auditioned properly before she even came back but whatever, she's the main character I get it 🙄
big red is a hero honestly, Nini better thank him for changing the subject like that
I can't-
i won't work you over the break-
this woman would 100% work her kids 24/7 if it was legal and idk how to feel about it.
YES GINA USE THAT CHARM
QUEEN
FRENCH QUEEN
SHE LEARNT FROM THE BEST (antoine obvi)
smh the airport lady, eavesdropping on Gina's call.
The way she was so happy to answer EJ's call, "eej"
I love them your honour.
EJ WITH PAINTED NAILS YES PLEASE
great now we need to see Gina, Ashlyn and EJ having a complete spa day and EJ getting really into it and Gina and Ashlyn take pictures of him when he's laying down in a robe with a mask and cucumbers on his eyes.
finally we get to see Gina's side of portwell
the way she considered it as flirting, this is the sign she asked for in episode 6 come onnnnn
no is Asher/jack really doing tiktok dances in an airport-
Ricky is me. I am burrito.
oh Lynne, sweetie, I'm sorry but the blonde hair is not it
is that even the same lady or-
THE BEAN
THE CHICAGO BEAN
THE BIG OLD METAL BEAN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CITY 😭
jetlag is my go to excuse for anything... I haven't travelled in 2 years.
"welcome to the Lynne and Mike gossip show. where we talk about our depressed son that we both neglect in certain ways! And now a word from our sponsor, Nord VPN..."
SO MANY CANDLES
WHAT DEMON IS LYNNE TRYING TO SUMMON IN HIS ROOM-
is Nina becoming social media obsessed EJ from season 1? AND SHE LIED ABOUT HAVING SONGS TOO PLEASE WHY ARW THEY RECYCLING THE SAME PLOT-
Gina smiling at the picture of her family on Instagram makes me so happy, idek why.
EJ's nails are so pretty, we needed to see it more (unless he had it on for the rest of the episode and I just.... didn't notice🧍🏽‍♀️)
oh not the tiktok kid✋
yes ma'am end this strange mans whole tiktok career
sir take a hint and leave
GINA NO DONT SAY YOUR LAST NAME HE COULD BE A HUMAN TRAFFICKER
Ricky, walking in style✨
weird kid, ok then Lynne, can't you see he's this close to the edge?
not all your fault baby Ricky, Nini sucks a bit more
RICKY YOU DIDN'T COME DOWN HARD ON THE SONG-
YOU ASKED WHAT IT WAS ABOUT AND SHE SHUT YOU DOWN-
PLEASE DO NOT BLAME YOURSELF
ok but the deleting comment thing was very bad
still don't know if I like Jack honestly
hmmm so Nini's calling herself Nini instead of Nina in her little egg seat, while trying to write a song without inspiration.... Nini, honey, Ricky was your muse, he inspired you to write all those songs, even if it wasn't good for the relationship.
that doesn't mean you gotta get back with him, or that you can't write a song that not about him butttt it'll take some time
the rainbow sticker in her box and her rainbow shirt-
anyways wbk she's not totally straight
Jack are you a criminal?
quick, Gina, check his ankle for a tracker
THE YES AND PRACTICE STRIKES AGAIN
the way Gina wasn't into it in episode 6 but she's used the technique twice now
stole her grandma's Pomeranian-
Jack where the hell did you pull that out from-
the fake crying killed me, that looks like so much fun though
anyone wanna raid a first class lounge with me?
wait so is jack not gonna go in with her?
wouldn't he go in too? help look for the credit card? SO CONFUSED
the first class lounge guy was so into the drama though, watch his face when they start arguing 😭
sorry to break this to you Kourtney, but you haven't even blocked the second act yet soooo...
take that as you will
I love how all of them are totally dissing the dance off
that's the most realistic part of this show tbh
shouldn't Nini have asked how she knew....since the start? why is the fact that her best friend has knowledge of a North high secret now dawning on her...
Howie is sweet honestly, at least he's trying to help. but I stand with Kourtney, don't take him back just because he sang an amazing song, and is giving you a heads up on what's gonna happen...
KOURTNEY IS ME TRYING TO LEAVE AN ONLINE CLASS
I hate school
ooo Nini's writing a song about bad internet connection 🤩🤩🤩
I never lie, except when I do-
son that is the creepiest thing you could say to a stranger that you've been "helping"
2 truths and a lie👀
he's an Ariana fan 100%
called it.
OLDER BROTHER-
WHAT-
free spirit? damn so brother porter was in that horse movie
so has she been kissed or not?????????
I feel like she's moved more than 15 times though so possibly
but then if she's moved so much, and before east high she never opened up to anyone, she's never been kissed then?? damn
same though Gina so let's be besties please
heartbreak president is a great song title idea, give Nini a call rn
but wait
is the no strings attached feeling thing about her telling Ricky she liked him? she thought she was moving away so she thought it'd be no strings attached???
guys I think I figured it out insert the "I've connected two dots" meme
THE DUKE SWEATSHIRT
IS THAT YOUR BOYFRIEND'S
OMG I LOVE I LOVE
NOT THAT I KNOW OF???
ma'am did you just kill me
yes you did
Lynne and Ricky have such a weird relationship
YES IT DID SUCK
TODD SUCKS
LYNNE SUCKS
yeah I get that you wanted Ricky to like Todd BUT THAT WASN'T THE TIME
right so we already know that Ricky was so desperate to keep Nini cuz he didn't want to be like his parents, and now Lynne's talking about this-
Richard needs a long hug
yes Lynne, it is your fault. thank you for finally admitting it.
YES DYE YOUR HAIR
BLOND HIGHLIGHTS RICKY WILL RISE AGAIN
"sometimes the best, last thing you can do for someone you love, is let them go."
gotta admit I teared up at that point
not me thinking big red was calling ms Jenn cupcake for a hot second-
Carlos please omg, you're at the "beach" and they're leaving for the pool?
also, why not just do the call from the hotel room please omg
"don't ask me"
"Carlos"
OMG WHAT HAPPENED
big red wants the tea
O M G
SEB IS JEALOUS
JEALOUS SEBBY IS MY FAVOURITE THING IDC
I'm surprised ms Jenn knew how to give Nini permission to screenshare tbh
So lily's been stalking the East high kids and spending time editing this video while she's supposedly in an immersion trip.... right
EJ and Ashlyn's picture is so chaotic, what even is happening there
"slacking off" bestie its spring break, obviously they're confident enough that they'll get it done in time so why not focus on your own musical.
jealous seb = sassy seb
please what if those guys Carlos is posing with are his cousins or something and that's why he's so confused about Seb
6 YEAR OLD EJ I LOVE HIM I LOVE HIM I LOVE HIM
Nini saying she's obsessed with her ex, that's not weird at all 👍
I can just tell Matt had a blast harassing Julia with those puppets.
Jack please dont be like that, "yet"
chances are you'll never see eachother again 🥰
(honestly sometimes I really miss those friends I made on trips and stuff when we'd spend the day or week together, only to never see them again....those were the good days though)
Ashlyn and Nini should write more songs..... something better than this one at least
Nini: "im good"
cue the Tia Mowry (please I can't spell) crying gif
oh I forgot Ricky was in the show for a hot second
1. where did Gina get to film this without people being around
2. did she just... randomly change her clothes???
ok but the transition between Carlos and EJ
*chefs kiss*
now everyone shut up, EJ's singing
oh i think I'm pregnant
HIS MUSCLES
YES KOURTNEY
I love how big red and Kourtney went from being "the best friends™" to the couple in season 1, to kinda close themselves and having their own plots
sebby makes me so happy
props to biggies editing skills honestly
PORTWELL BEING SIDE TO SIDE I CANT
AND SEBLOS OMG
big red lives for the drama
"wow" so true Ricky
no he is not cute, stop it
"holding" ok that's kinda cute
yeah EJ's a lucky guy😌
jokes aside, it's not that hard to exchange numbers-
keep in touch if you want
ok I really like Jack now
if he comes back in season 3, maybe have him be LGBTQ+ ?
like the only out characters they have rn are Seb and Carlos and they're like the sterotypes, yk?
I'd love to see jack kinda break the mold
Ricky's breaking my heart
that song just hurts
the only thing
now I don't hate Lynne????????
HOW DARE THEY WRITE IN A PROPER REDEMPTION ARC FOR HER
UGH IM SUPPOSED TO HATE HER FOREVER
I mean I don't live her now but she's good
but honestly
"mom can I show you something"
IT WAS SO BEAUTIFUL
THE PICTURE AND EVERYTHING OMG
I'm sobbing please help
Gina saying she's just waiting for the right guy and then EJ coming to the airport to pick her up late at night without her asking, offering to bring her back in the morning so she won't have to Uber, bringing her a granola bar (WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT SHE FORGOT TO PACK) and without expecting anything in return???
ms ma'am you've got a keeper right there
her smile at the end was so heartwarming I really can't.
this episode was great.
it felt really short but I liked it, great character development for Ricky, Lynne and Gina.
Cant wait for next episode to see more of EJ being the ideal boyfriend /hj

The Green Knight’s Lady (4)
Sequel fic to “The Witch and the Green Knight” (on Ao3)
Warnings: undeserved redemption arc, graphic imagery and as of this chapter violence against minors.
Chapter 1: In which Rowan has Unexpected House Guests
Chapter 2: In Which They Try to Figure Out What the Hell is Going On
Chapter 3: In Which Remus and Rowan’s Stupidity Escalates to Treason (sort of)
>-<>-< ——————-<>——————- >-<>-<
Chapter 4: In Which Life is Difficult
>-<>-< ——————-<>——————- >-<>-<
The winter waned in a sloppy miserable way, kicking out with a few snowstorms like the flailing of a dying animal. Despite not really being bothered by the cold, D.N. practically hibernated, most often found in a window seat in the library, going through Rowan’s Mother’s books and being snarky about bad information about fairies. Rowan was fairly sure it was just a way to safely lash out. She dug out an old laptop and gave him access to the Netflix account. If nothing else it kept him distracted. Something Rowan had learned was that the fair folk did, as legend said, love stories.
And apparently, soap operas and romcoms.
Like herself, Remus seemed out of sorts in the late winter, though more in the way of someone who had woken up long before they wanted to. He’d gone into the woods and returned dressed in his more normal attire, also having brought back a few changes of clothing that was closer to D.N.’s size, and of a finer make than anything in the Baker house, despite Rowan’s sister’s cautious attempt to find a fabric the fae child would like. For the most part, the rest of Rowan’s family treated D.N. with cautious courtesy, and a certain level of ‘not be alone in a room with him’. Remus, by contrast, was treated more as a benign nuisance, though not without kindness.  Frankly, that was more understandable than Rowan’s blase attitude. That didn’t stop a certain level of speculation as to why ‘Leif’ and his friend were staying with them.
     “I’ve figured it out!”
Rowan balled a pair of socks and tossed it in her sister’s basket across the table. They were sorting the laundry by owner, and Rowan had made it her mission to find as many pairs of socks as she could.
“Figured what out?”
“What’s going on with Leif and the kid!”
“Have you now?” Rowan said dryly and a little nervously. Her sister nodded.
“It’s pretty obvious if you think about it. The kid is the spawn of the last fairy king.”
“What.”
“Look, it’s obvious that Leif served him, right? And we know he’s dead. So then Leif disappears for months and reappears with a kid? With scales? We know that Leif’s traveled outside Wickhills before- so clearly he knew where the kid was, maybe he was even the one who took him away, probably more of a Cronos eating his kids thing than a Arthur sent into hiding thing, and now he brought him back.” She pursed her lips. “You know, I bet Leif can change genders like a frog.”
Rowan started laughing.
“Leif might even be the mother-” she went on.
“Definitely not.” Rowan choked.
“But he is related. I’ve connected the dots.” she said smugly.
“You haven’t connected shit.” Rowan retorted throwing a pair of pants at her.
“I’ve connected them.”
As spring burgeoned forth, Remus agitated with the need to leave the house. It was clear he wasn’t used to staying in one place, even for a few weeks like this. Rowan could always tell when Remus had gone wandering in the night, because D.N. didn’t come down from the attic until he’d come back. It wasn’t as if D.N. was avoiding his so-called hosts, so much as he was totally avoiding the humans in the house as much as possible as if by pretending they weren’t there he could pretend none of this was happening.
When spring officially arrived Rowan made them clothing, a shirt of heavy green broadcloth for Remus, and a more delicate shirt of the finest white linen she had for D.N. The shirt he generally wore was made of undyed silk, and Rowan feared that the substance had come from the shroud- or rather bag- she’d sewn for the bones of the Serpent King. It was tricky to give them, as D.N. certainly wanted no gifts from her, and Remus wanted to gift her in return. But it was simply tradition, that for the first day of spring everyone had a new garment. So her green brother and erstwhile guest needed something new too, for luck. Honestly, Rowan thought he could probably use all the luck he could get.
It was a fine warm day in mid April, when leaves were finally starting to show, and only the most stubborn bits of snow were sticking around in the darkest shadows, when Rowan was working in her garden.
“Little tree! You’re wearing pants!”
The whippy rose vine Rowan had been arguing with slipped out of her hand as the twist tie sprang from her other, and she took the momentary break to glare at Remus, who had appeared in her personal bubble with no warning whatsoever.
“I wear pants all the time.” she retorted, giving him a half hearted shove.
“Yeah, but usually you have dresses over ‘em.” theatrically, he collapsed to the scrubby grass outside the garden and sprawled in the sun.
“Well, I learned that arguing with rose bushes in a dress doesn’t end well for the dress.” She grabbed hold again with her gloved hand, and pulled a fresh tie out of her apron pocket, lashing the thorny vine to the wrought iron trellis that kept most fae out of her garden. They could, in theory, pass under the iron arbor that faced the wood, wreathed as it was in plants, but until Remus it hadn’t been much of a problem. “How are you doing?” she asked quietly. He was looking better. He’d been kind of wan, a sickly sort of green rather than his normal healthy hue like a ripening acorn.
“Starting to feel my oats.” He responded, tipping his face into the sun. “It’s a good spring. I’d say that spring was happy about something.” in the distance, a door opened and closed.
“Seasons do seem to have emotions.” She agreed, and had to step delicately over him to get to the next bush, pulling clippers from her pocket and studying the bush thoughtfully, before pruning a few branches, and returning to tucking them in safely so they wouldn’t grab passers by too badly.  That done she carried the trimmed branches away. D.N. emerged from the widdershins side of the house, having exited the front door and walked so he didn’t have to pass the rowan tree, even if he could do so under the protection of the porch. He glared down at Remus with frustration.
“What are you doing?” he demanded.
“Having a kip?” Remus suggested, as Rowan stepped over him again to get back to the rose bushes.
“You should tell me as soon as you come back from the forest.” he said grouchily, not making eye contact.
“Well, not much is going on, so there’s nothing to tell you.” Remus shrugged.
“That’s good right?” Rowan asked.
“A secret unsaid is a secret kept.” D.N. muttered, not addressing Rowan at all. “What are you doing out there anyway?”
“Favors.” Remus sighed. “So many favors. I’m not exactly a favorite right now. People don’t want me to do favors for them, but I need the currency. Also fixing up my house.” he rubbed his hands over his face. “It’s kind of out of the way, so it might be safe enough. It’s nice enough to visit with my little tree, but…”
“We can’t stay here forever.” D.N. agreed. “It buzzes.”
“Yeah.” Remus nodded. “So I’ve got some improvements to make, and gotta reassert my territory. No one got near the tree, but I don’t have much around it.” he clicked his tongue “Fun and all, but I’m in a hurry.”  he made a kissy face at them both. “But I’ll always hurry back to you.”
Rowan snorted, and D.N. rolled his eyes. He crossed his arms and cocked his hip, glaring down at the green-clad fae.
“I’m sure whatever you stay in is better than this.”
“Hey, owch. It’s a good house. We finally got the roof fixed last year.” Rowan glared, waving her clippers at him. D.N. leaned away.
“Well it’s hardly the hovel I’ve seen other witches live in,” he sneered at the Victorian style house. “But it isn’t anywhere I would choose to stay.”
“Sorry for not being a magical house.”
“Oh it’s full of magic alright. Human magic, thick and inelegant, like mud on the bottom of a pond.”
“I like mud.” Remus commented, popping up and bracing himself upright on his hands. Rowan noticed that his knuckles were reddened and split. Putting her clippers away again, she dug into her other pocket, coming up with a small, shallow clay pot, closed with a wide cork. She crouched down and grabbed one hand, dabbing the ointment onto the wounds. Remus obligingly offered his other hand when she was done.
“Why was this in your pocket?”
“It’s better to get the ointment on big jabs right away, and I’m doing lawn work.” she shrugged, and went back to her work.
After a while, Rowan finished her discussion with the rosebushes, and headed back inside without saying anything. Shortly after that, a car drove up hidden by the bulk of the house. Another short while later, it drove away again. Rowan returned to her garden, hooking her apron over her head again.
“Bloody busy-body is what she is.” Rowan grumbled to herself. “No need to come by every time, her tea hasn’t changed in over a year, if I wanted everyone coming by and bothering me all the time I’d start up a tea room in town and read palms and cards. It’s what I get for being helpful and offering to do a unique blend.”
“Can you tell the future?” Remus asked, popping up on the other side of the hedge wall of rose bushes, making Rowan yelp and clutch her rake.
“Like the weather.” She retorted. “Which is to say, not really worth anything.”
“You’re a useless kind of witch, aren’t you?” sniffed D.N. who had taken up a seat in an Adirondack style chair they had acquired somewhere, and everyone in the Baker family hated, which is why it wasn’t on the porch.
“Yeah, kind of.” she didn’t rise to the bait, and watched him stare at the woods. “You could go, you know.”
“What?”
“Nothing’s keeping you here if you wanted to leave.”
“Little tree-” Remus said, sounding hurt.
“Not you, you’re welcome any time. And for that matter, if he wants to go for a bit and come back, that’s fine.”
“I can’t actually. I have to ‘stay here’ until further notice.”
“Oh right. Fairy parole officer.” Rowan sighed. “Well you could probably get as far as the property line, or where our ‘official’ lot meets up with the woods.”
“It isn’t as if I’m desperate to wander in the woodlands, Witch, I just don’t want to be here. At all.”
“Boy, do I hear that.”  she sighed deeply, pausing to look into the woods herself. The small leaves were misting the tips of the trees with color, and there was a smell of wet and rot in the air. It looked like a storm was building in the west.  It would probably hit the before nightfall, gathering the dark in the clouds and making the night come that much faster in the growing spring day. Better to get her gardening done before it hit, so she’d only have to repair the damage it did, not do that and the maintenance. The plants were being especially springy this year, and she was tempted to put this down to Remus’s presence.
D.N. continued to watch her, as though she was some sort of reality TV show, while Remus sprawled in the scrubby grass next to his chair.
When the first cold wet gust hit, all three of them headed inside.
The storm was really having fun, so they were in Rowan’s room instead of the loft. Remus liked to hang out with both of them, so Rowan coming to work on whatever she was doing -some sort of project involving embroidery floss at the moment- and sit with Remus while Remus would root through her work basket, or bring out a pouch and do something himself- embroidery, or sharpening knives, occasionally woodcarving. Sometimes he’d sit behind Rowan and brush or play with her hair, braiding it into elaborate arrangements that she’d have to ask for help to undo.
Sometimes Danger Noodle would use Remus as a cushion or a backrest as if he was staking his claim. That night however, he’d pulled the beat up floral armchair Rowan kept next to one of her windows to a different window (further away from the dancing limbs of the rowan tree) and settled down with a book.
Rowan noticed that he would raise his hand and rub the back of his neck occasionally as if it were hurting. She nudged Remus’s leg and inclined her head at D.N. He shrugged.
“Are you in pain somehow?” Rowan asked, startling him into dropping his book.
“Kindly mind your own business.” Danger Noodle sneered.
“Are you cold?” Remus asked. “You do-” he rubbed the back of his neck “lots.”
D.N. growled under his breath, picking the book up.
“It isn’t important.” He told them.
“But it is a thing.”
“You never used to.”
He sighed, explosively. “Are you two going to leave me alone about this?”
“Well now I’m curious.” Rowan admitted tipping her head with a smile on her face that reminded D.N. far too much of Remus’s mischievous expression. If it weren’t for her obvious humanity, he would think they were siblings. “If you’re cold, I could get you a blanket, is all.”
“I’m not cold.” he rolled his eyes. “I’m a winter.”
She looked unimpressed. “So what’s with the lounging in sunbeams?”
Danger Noodle sneered at her, scales glinting in the lamplight.
“It's just a feeling.  It’s like a cold hand on the back of my neck, it’s not squeezing but it’s there.” D.N. spread his fingers over the back of his neck.  “Like something’s watching me, constantly.”
“Huh.” Remus and Rowan said in unison, heads tipping to the side. Danger Noodle glared, there was no way they weren’t doing that on purpose.
“Might be something?” Remus asked thoughtfully, looking at the corners of the room.
“I’d want to keep an eye on him, if it were me.” Rowan admitted.
D.N. sighed again, exasperated, then Remus perked up digging in one of the many pockets inside his vest.  After a search he came up with a bag, tied firmly shut with cord. He climbed off the bed and went to kneel next to the armchair instead.
“I made this for you.” Remus opened the intricately tied knot, and from inside the bag, produced a scarf. It looked like heavy silk of some sort, dyed a beautiful saffron yellow, covered in single-thread embroidery. Vines twisted and twined along it, with a snake hidden among them.  D.N. stared at it for a long moment, then recoiled.
“Are you out of your mind? Wait, never mind I retract the question.”
“I made it for you a while ago but…” Remus admitted. “You wouldn’t have taken it.”
“I’m not taking it now.” He stood up, tossing the book on the chair. “What makes you think I would even want it?”
“You’re not as strong now-”
Danger Noodle hissed, flashing sharp teeth, pupils narrow.
“-so I’m going to protect you until you’re stronger.” Remus finished as if  he hadn’t just been threatened.
“I am still stronger than you.” the young fae said disdainfully, drawing himself up to his full, unimpressive height.
“Are you though?” Rowan asked, setting her project down and watching them.
“I am certainly more powerful than you.”
“Oh, that’s not even a question.”
“So what this looks like is Remus is offering you his favor to wear, showing that you’re his...  I’m going to say ‘ward’, because you’re a kid.”
“I am not a kid!” D.N. retorted, stamping his foot like a child.
“And therefore under his protection. Displaying a connection.”
“It’s a little more complicated than that, but yeah.” Remus agreed.
“Which is why I’m not interested.”
“I don’t have to give you an oath to give you my favor.” Remus pointed out, he just stared up at Danger Noodle entreatingly.  The room was silent except for the storm outside, and the faint sound of someone watching a movie elsewhere in the house. D.N. rubbed the back of his neck again, and Rowan shivered, like a gust of cold air had made it through the window. Her eyes shut and she saw dead branches against a milky sky. Blinking the vision away, she got to see D.N. throw his hands in the air.
“Uugh enough with the eyes. Fine. I’ll take it, but it doesn’t mean anything.” He accepted the scarf and looped it around his neck, spreading the folds upward to the base of his hair.
“It means you’re wearing something I made you.” Remus pointed out and rose up, gathering Danger Noodle into a hug, to which he submitted, to Rowan’s surprise. “Which makes me happy.”
“Mmgnh. Fuck off.” D.N. mumbled, face pressed to Remus’s bicep.
Rowan decided not to comment on how cute it was.

“What was he like?” the hetero chromatic boy besides you asked, eyes wandering into yours.
“He was…” you smiled at him. He's never met him, or really interacted with his own brother, thanks to his father.
“He was really sweet to me Shoto. I think you would’ve loved him.”
“You think so?”
There was a moment of silence, and you reached over to rest your hand on his.
You smiled wide at him, reminiscing over your lost friend.
“I do.”
You sighed over the lost memories, the old ones, and ones you’ll never be able to make. You swung your legs in your stool and bit the inside of your lip.
It hurts to think of him, but he’s okay now.
He's gotta be and you promised him.
You spun in your seat to face Shoto, and to turn your attention to anything else right now.
“Come on, we can get a drink later or soba or something, but we have to be at my agency in twenty.” You jumped off your seat, your shoes landing on the ground with a soft thud.
“Okay.” The boy next to you hopped off his seat as well, and fixed his hero costume. Looking into his left eye reminded you of your best friend, who you lost so long ago.
You tried your best to be side by side with Shoto, knowing how hard Enji was on him.
Not only that, but you promised Toya.
You promised him to stick around, both in life and with his beloved family.
Even if something happened to him.
He promised you the same thing, that if you were to die, he would stick around for the better.
-
“Hey. Can I tell you something?” The red haired boy leaned forward, and swung his legs once or twice. You sat on the roof of your apartment, the one where he slept over on a weekly basis.
The stars were out, the moon reflected off of his blue eyes as he stared at you.
“Yeah, whats up?”
You were only 14 at the time, he was 15. There was nothing between you, just a family kinda love.
“Can you make me a promise? I’ll make the same one back.” He held out his hand, pinky outstretched. It was your thing, you pinky promise before the promise is stated because no matter what,
You guys were sticking together.
You wrapped your pinky around his, and touched the pads of your thumb together.
“I can.”
There was a second of silence, and he stared into your eyes.
“If I die you have to stick around.”
You stared at him, and tears pricked the corner of your eyes. Your wings fluttered and stuck close to you.
“Okay. I promise.” You shakily promised him, and blinked the tears away. You pulled on his hand before he let go and your brows furrowed.
“Be safe, okay Toya? That's all I need you to say right now. Promise me.”
He looked lost for a second, lost in your protection, lost in his own pain, everything.
“I promise.”
-
You walked quickly next to Shoto, talking happily of new soba recipes or shops, your friends, anything that popped up.
There weren’t many boundaries, but Toya was never brought up much.
You fiddled with your necklace charm, the one in the shape of a light blue heart.
“Shoto, how is Midoriya?” you asked him, hoping to change your mind's topic.
Todoroki carried the conversation on his own, until you arrived at your agency. You didn't mind he carried it, it was nice.
“Still breaking hands, hand crusher?” You teased him, and he smiled slightly.
“Not anymore, gladly.”
You laughed with each other as you walked down the halls, waving to sidekicks and heroes who lingered in your agency.
Closer to your office, Shoto had scared himself shitless, turning a corner and he swore he saw something move and he iced the floor, it was fun.
He slid around, squatted slightly, arms out as you flew slightly above the ground.
You giggled at him, rolling around the walls as he struggled.
It was all fun and games.
“Shoto. Halo.”  A booming voice echoed through the hall, causing your laughter to cease quickly. You glanced near the sound, already knowing its owner. You narrowed your eyes, and cocked your head to the side and you crossed your arms.
“Endeavour.” You said, your voice monotone.
The red haired male stared at you, his arms crossed and his head tilted up slightly.
“Can we help you?” you asked him, a certain snarl in your voice.
The male looked down upon you as his son steadied himself and stood besides you. He clenched his fists at the sight of his father, the current top hero.
Endeavor said nothing, and you grew frustrated. What does he fucking want?
“Hello?” you waved your hand dangerously close to his face, feeling his flames rise and grow in heat. “Did you fucking hear me?”
Shoto’s eyes widened slightly as he watched his father and your taunting actions.
“If you keep acting like a child, you will never reach me.” His voice boomed, and there was a moment of silence. Shoto turned his head slightly to see you holding in a laugh.
“Father-”
“HAHAHA YOU’RE A GODDAMN IDIOT. YOU THINK I WOULD WANT TO BE LIKE YOU?” you laughed at him, and got closer to his face. Shoto grabbed your hand, but did not hold you back much farther from that.
Being face to face with this man, that took away your best friend from you, caused him pain and trauma and sorrow. And not just him, his whole fucking bloodline.
“You think I would ever want to be like you? You’re the man who took him away from me. My fucking best friend. I would never want to be like you, and I know he wouldn't want to be either.”
You prodded him with your finger, staring into his fiery eyes. His eyes narrowed at the mention of his son, and tightened his arms around his chest. Seeing him made you upset, and anyone could see it.
“So no, if being the number one hero, or fuck, even a top hero, meant being anything like you, then no. I will always choose to never be like you, and anyone with half a goddamn brain cell knows why.”
You pulled away from him, an anger in your stomach and your left hand was made into a fist. The boy besides you tugged on your hand, and you stepped back into line with him.
“So, please Endeavwhore, try me.” Your scowled at him, and he stared. His eyes switched from you to his son to your right. He scoffed and began to turn away.
“Don’t let me down, Shoto.”
His hand clenched around yours, your fingers intertwined.
“Don't worry Sho, you will never be like him.”
You softly tapped his shoulder with yours, and he looked at you. You looked into his eyes, and smirked at him, flashing a wink. You flipped up your middle finger to the fiery males back and stuck your tongue out at him, as Shoto snickered softly.
Endeavor continued walking, his heavy boots echoing down the hall.
I miss you Toya.
-
“Toya, don't continue to be around her.” Endeavor glared at you as he continued.
“She will continue to be a horrible influence, and will never be a top hero.”
Toya’s fists clenched hard, but he shoved them into his pockets to hide his furious action.
“Do you understand me Toya?”
The boy was silent, his eyes with a sharp glare. Your breath hitched in your throat and you began to slowly scooch closer to the boy.
“She’ll always be a better hero than you.”
Toya said as he rolled his eyes and stuck out his middle finger almost directly in his father's face. Your wings spread wide and took off fast, and as you held onto the boy's waist,  you heard his father yell over the sound of the wind.
“HAH! FUCKING LOOK AT THAT,THAT BASTARD!” Toya laughed in your arms, his legs swinging over open air. You glanced at where his finger was pointing and saw his father stand in rising flames, and in obvious rage. You couldn't help but snicker as you warned him.
“Dude, you're gonna get killed! Oh my god, we’re going back to my place.”
-
But, I will protect Shoto with all my power.

AN: UNDER HERE IS ANGST DUDE HELP AJBHF
BONUS:
An alarm blared through your halls, flashing lights overcoming your senses. Shoto grasped your arm, and began to run. Your wings shook, shuddering to keep up with the sudden action.
“Come on. 17th precinct!”
Shoto ran out of your agency, and you parted ways. Your wings took flight quickly and flew you above the city.
You searched and searched for a sight of chaos, and it only took a moment before your wings acted before your brain could.
You sped off towards a tunnel of smoke, knowing Shoto can meet you there.
Your wings carried you fast and flapped heavily, and you knew you were not fit for this.
You had no choice, and if anything
This is what being a hero is about.
You could die here easily, stripped of your wings, stripped of your and yet here you are.
Because you promised you would keep fighting.
Your wings fluttered as you dropped to the ground, your eyes immediately searching for victims.
There was no one around, just burnt debris and smoke. The smoke filled your lungs, and you struggled to breathe.
Your eyes never ceased to search for victims, high and low left and right,
But you found no one.
You ran into the smoke, shielding your eyes. Eventually, Shoto will find you but for now you must search for others and protect them.
A shadowy figure stalked towards you, barely seen in the thick of the smoke.
“Hey! Are you okay?” you coughed out as loud as you could.
His footsteps were heavy, and a burned coat flew behind him.
“Just fine angel.”
You tensed at the nickname, no one called you that anymore. It was a common nickname, and you were the angel hero.
“Who are you?” You shouted as the figure grew near, more and more, heavy footsteps echoed off burnt and fallen debris.
And there was silence as he stopped walking, the smoke began to clear slowly. You squinted, attempting to see into his figure, searching for any sign of real life in it.
You stood as tall as you could and stretched your wings to the fullest. They were covered in ashes and dirt.
As the smoke cleared you made out his tall lanky figure as much as you could.
His burned jacket flew in the wind, wrapped around his scarred body. His scars were purple and seemed scary, but faintly familiar.
His eyes were a scary blue, but they brought a warmth with the sorrow they seemed to carry.
Your necklace hung against your chest, moving slightly in the wind.
“Still a hero?”
You didn't know what he meant, maybe he’s seen you on T.V. and figured you were a worse version of Hawks.
“Yes, I- Who are you? Can I help? Are you okay?” You asked him, you didn't know if he was okay or not.
It never occurred to you he could be the one beyond it.
“Oh I’m just fine doll!” He raised his scarred hand to the right, and blue flames burst out of it.
“You should be concerned over the destruction hm?” You stood in shock, the flames, the eyes, the scars.
“Holy shit.” you whimpered to yourself, staring into his turquoise eyes as he smiled at your unmoving figure.
“Holy shit!” You yelled, and began to run towards him.
The smoke hurt your eyes,
But you kept running.
He reached his other hand out, maybe he expected you to stop, to be afraid, but your legs moved before your brain could think.
Your footsteps were quick and light. You avoided burnt debri, and as you grew closer to the male you could make out his features.
Jagged purple scarred half of his face, silver staples decorated the edges of them. His black hair flew in a familiar pattern, and on top of everything,
His blue eyes were even more prominent up close.
You stared into them, brows furrowed in worry, for the destruction, for the civilians, for wherever the hell Shoto is right now.
“Who are you?” you asked again, and raised your hands, your left hand gripping his raised arm, and your right his coat.
He smiled at me again and leaned his head forward.
“Whadda mean, hero?” He said, close enough to your ear to send shivers down your spine.
“Don’t you remember me?”
You opened your mouth to respond to him, but Shoto’s voice began to echo through the debris.
“HALO!” He yelled for you, and you wanted to turn to see him but your eyes were locked onto the black haired male before you.
“Shoto.” you whispered. Your lower lip trembled just a little, and your brows furrowed again.
“Shoto!” You yelled as you began to step back away from the male before you. You stumbled back, and the lanky male grabbed onto the front of your costume, and held you in place.
“HAL-” Shoto’s voice rang through your mine, and your head whipped around to see him, his eyes wide and flames bursting from his side.
“Dabi. Let her go.” He shouted slightly, he was still a bit far. His hair waved in the wind as he moved towards you as fast as he could.
“Hi, Shoto. Nice to see you again. I’m just having fun with my doll, eh?” Dabi smirked at him, as his hand released your costume and you fell back.
You hit the ground hard, and groaned. You stared into the males eyes, switching between his and Shotos left eye.
“Toya.” You whispered to him, lip quivering. He snapped his head to you and smiled wide.
“Hi angel.”
He grasped your throat in his right hand, his hand was hot, overwhelming hot.
“I see you kept your promise.”
His other hand fiddled with your necklace, the one he gave to you so long ago. He stared at it, before switching his eyes to you, and tugging on the chain quickly. The chain broke apart in his grip, and fell apart onto the group.
You were unbothered and delved into your memories of your best friend, the best friend you thought you lost.
“I missed you doll.”
Everything around you began to set itself to flames.

BNHA Chapter 300 Spoiler Thoughts: Crumbling Hero Society and Keeping Up with The Todoroki (Again)
OK, I got a good majority of my thoughts together for this chapter, so it’s time to start writing about it again:
Starting off, I haven’t seen anything about a special cover page for the big 300 yet and I doubt we’re getting a color page this time around.  Most likely we’ll see it when it officially drops.  I do hope it’s something light-hearted to lift our spirits up, but given where we’re at in the plot, it might be filled with some heavy symbolism which I’m also down for.
Edit: The full leaks are out and I saw nothing special about a cover/color page.  It’s just the usual chapter structure with the only exception being the title’s at the end like Katsuki Bakugo: Rising was.  I’m hoping for a sketch on Horikoshi’s Twitter at least since 300 chapters is worth celebrating, but there’s nothing super special with the chapter itself 😢
Villains are out and about after the Prison Breaks...  Of course they’re causing chaos wherever they go.  The citizens are actually fighting back using their own support items probably from Denarat since I believe the usual support items we’ve seen, like on heroes, have to be official via signed papers and such; they can’t just be bought off the market.
But, because of their lack of training, the citizens are causing more collateral damage than usual.  They’d rather depend on themselves than Pro Heroes anymore.  In a way, I get it (the authorities can’t always be relied on, unfortunately), but if you don’t have the proper training to deal with a situation, it can cause more harm than good.
I’m glad Wash is showing his worth as a hero!  He’s still protecting the citizens and helping them capture the villains.  It just sucks that he and a lot of other legit heroes are getting scolded for doing their job now.  This follows up with that one panel of the crowd of civilians from the last chapter where you saw some people happy to see Best Jeanist and others just angry or disappointed.  Hero society is crumbling at the seams and those cracks are only getting bigger.
Of course the number of Pro Heroes have decreased.  We all saw this coming.  What I didn’t see coming was the #9 Hero: Yoroimusha (the old samurai Hero) announcing his retirement.  Not because of his age, but because he only wanted to be appreciated.  It’s ok to want to be appreciated, but to use that as your drive to be a Pro Hero is less than heroic.  And we know that he’s not the only Pro Hero who chose to be a hero for these reasons (Stain was created to drive this very point home).
I’ll get back to Stain in the next bullet point, but there’s one panel that shows that All Might statue at Kamino completely vandalized with a board sign around it saying “I AM NOT HERE”.  That... oof...  Look, All Might has his flaws as everyone else does, but the man has done so damn much for the people that he does not deserve this.  It’s not his fault he had to retire, he did everything he could during his run.  It would be a tough battle even if he was involved in the war.  There’s a reason why All Might was so well-loved even after he retired, so to see him being slandered like this just hurts...
And Stain is back.  He escaped Tartarus like everyone else.  I’m curious to see where Horikoshi will take this guy.  My guess is that he’ll probably go back to killing non-heroic “heroes”, but maybe he’ll do something else after being stuck in prison for several months.  His vision of Hero Society is even more spread out than before at least.
And now the Torodokis.  Hoo boy.  Endeavor’s awake and alive.  I’m personally glad because more character growth from him (I know some think otherwise and I respect that).  Some people still support him, but most everyone else has turned their back on him.  Endeavor reflects on Toya when he was a child pulling out his white hair to get his attention.  In the end, Endeavor focused on Shoto more.  I like that Horikoshi doesn’t let us forget that Endeavor was a piece of shit who abused his family.  Endeavor can atone and try for redemption all he wants, but that history of abuse will never go away.  It will always come back to bite him.  You reap what you sow, Endeavor.
And, although Enji is alive, Endeavor has “died”.  He can’t fight Toya.  I’m guessing that means Endeavor is out as a Hero.  This was probably going to happen regardless.  Endeavor had too much against him to let him continue.  Now all Enji can do is try to fix what he can, though I doubt it will be much.
Real quick, but there’s a funny page where Shoto walks in to see Enji crying (with a funny bloated face; Horikoshi why 😭), opens the door, and then immediately slams it shut!  Enji yells out the classic “SHOTOOOOO!!!!!” 🤣  Idk if it’s pettiness or awkwardness on Shoto’s part, but it’s good to see some humor still being put into this depressing Hospital Arc.
Now, all the Todoroki are here together.  Fuyumi feels sympathy for her father (bless her ❤️), but everyone else is straight up done.  Natsuo is frustrated, Shoto’s probably conflicted given that he hardly looks his father in the eyes, and Rei is also done with Enji’s shit.  She’s basically telling him that a lot of people have it worse than him (probably because a lot of people died, of course), and that Enji needs to get his shit together right now.
Also, REI TODOROKI IS HERE!!! 💙 OUR QUEEN 👑  With the flower Enji gave her while in the mental ward no less (gotta love that symbolism).  Everyone, including myself, thought that seeing Dabi would through Rei off and send her back to a declining mental state.  I’m glad that it pretty much had the reverse effect.  It actually made her stronger than ever!  She’s finally ready to confront Enji and talk about her family, specifically about Toya.  My only disappointment is that we didn’t get to see Shoto’s reaction to seeing his mom out of the mental hospital for the first time in over a decade.  I want to see it, Horikoshi!  Give me some bittersweet feels 😭💙
And that’s it for this chapter!  Heavy stuff in this episode’s “Keeping Up with The Todoroki” (love how that’s become a running gag in the fandom now).  I’m really happy to see Rei’s back, but Dabi’s damage on Hero Society definitely left it’s mark.  No Deku, Bakugo, Tamaki, or Kamanari this chapter so we don’t know what’s going on with them.  I doubt we’re going to see them next chapter either if Horkioshi chooses to stick with the Todoroki drama again for a while, which I’m cool with.  I would like to see Bakugo try talking to Deku though.  I need some more good 🥦💥 in my life.

Chain of Iron ripped my heart out, stomped on it then was thrown under the train. This book made me stop once in a while because the feelings were just too much. By the end, I was bawling my eyes out.
I just wanna share my thoughts about coi here and please be warned, it contains spoilers!!!
Cordelia. I can honestly say that Cordelia is my favorite character in Chain of Iron. RESPECT. She married the man she is in love with, knowing that he doesn’t (but really he does) feel the same way and enduring that he is in love with someone else. What started out as she’s happy, her life slowly spirals into devastations. Her life, her father, her loved ones, and her strengths turned into a mess. It hurts seeing Cordelia, someone who craves being a hero, a warrior, get so happy that she was anointed as a paladin only for her strengths turned against her and making her insecure and thinking that she’s not good enough. This book just didn’t want her to be happy. And I know that she’s bound to be the one to kill Belial but it will take a toll on her on wielding Cortana again, and I’m just not ready for her to hurt more.
James. James, even with the bracelet on, is so in love with Cordelia. In Chain of Gold I had a hard time in relating to him. He was a bit bland. But he came a long way that I believe the bracelet was the one clouding his personality. With the bracelet off, he’s gonna be so lost and confused about himself because he’s been influenced for years. I just want him to confide in his family on how he just wasn’t himself. James was such a good husband to Cordelia, I mean picking out all the things in the house with Cordelia in his mind? Yes, James. Learning Persian because it’s her language and it’s his surprise for their wedding? Keep going. Giving her a globe necklace because they talked about how they want to travel? A PERFECT HUSBAND I SAY!
Matthew. My poor Matthew, if only you could love yourself like how your family and friends love you. I’m so proud of you in confiding in Cordelia about the things you are feeling. I’m not actually against Fairstairs but what I wanna see is Matthew and happiness. Matthew and sobriety. And it may sound cliché if Matthew somehow found those in Cordelia. That in order for you to be happy you just have to find someone else who will make you happy. I don’t want him to be so dependent on Cordelia. I’m not against on Cordelia being the one to push Matthew to somehow compel him to achieve happiness, because he needs a nudge. And I feel like they both need it. I wanna see Matthew love himself. And I feel like Cordelia will only think of Matthew as a friend. Because whenever she talks about Matthew it is like of a friend (well save for those that she noticed that he has nice arms) but if you compare it to how she talks about James you can clearly see who she is in love with. Though at the end of COI I kinda get the feeling that Cordelia accepts that James will never love her and she’s trying to move on. And for her to try and push herself to try and love Matthew romantically, it’s just not her. She’s not someone who will force herself.
Grace. I have so many mixed emotions about grace. I don’t know what to expect from her. She’s unpredictable. She was brought up by Tatiana, who is a parasite, mad and full of revenge. And I don’t understand how Tatiana’s brothers let her raise Grace knowing that she’s not in the right mind to raise a child and raise her in the dilapidated house. I hate grace but not at the same time. For her to be raised by Tatiana is to be raised without love and be brought up by insanity. Constantly feeding Grace treachery, ill feelings and poison. I understand how she is that way. But I can’t really forgive her for what she’s done to James. She stole years of his life. I feel she’s kinda like Julian, they both wanted to do everything in their power just for their loved ones. But it ends there. If Cassie’s gonna give her a redemption arc, it's gotta be something pretty big. I thought that I would hate grace and Christopher but I don’t. When I read Christopher’s perspective, I felt like grace was innocent and she’s genuinely interested in listening to Christopher and that is what Christopher needs because he knows that not everyone is interested in listening to him.
Lucie. Lucie in Chain of Iron made me not like her much. Don’t get me wrong I’m so in love with Lucie and Jesse. Their love story is so pure. And I can’t wait for them to be together. But she’s been swept by Jesse and I think that will be something that will result in a disaster. Jesse is all she thinks about, not knowing what the consequences will be. She’s been distant from everybody especially with Cordelia that I believe they won’t be parabatai anymore.
What’s so frustrating about this book is that the characters are so closely knit together but so distant with each other. Everyone is just so swept up by secrets that make them so divided. Especially if those secrets are ruining the life of their friend (MATTHEW) I can’t believe they’ve been so ignorant about his addiction. They know about his alcoholism and they’re choosing not to do something about it because they’re afraid of how Matthew will react. Well if you still remain to be ignorant about it, it will result in worse things.
NOW I CAN’T WAIT FOR THE ANGST IN CHAIN OF THORNS!!

She-Ra for the ask meme! (Maybe a bad time with the final season so close, you can save this until after if you like.)
(Based on this meme.)
Well, did I save this for later or what?
The first character I first fell in love with: Entrapta. Aside from her colour scheme—I do love a good purple girl, to say the least—I adore her for her enthusiastic, inquisitive, compassionate, and rather eccentric personality. Not to mention her design is an absolute joy to watch in action; from the goggles to the prehensile hair, is creative and adorable. She steals every scene she’s in with her loveably manic energy. The fact that she’s a scientist, who specializes in advanced technology no less, makes her an important character in a magic-driven fantasy setting—her design helps her stand out among the more traditional looking princesses, too! The fact that she’s some of the most effectively authentic examples of autistic representation in children’s fiction only enhances her likeability, in addition to the most interesting and sympathetic examples of morally grey characters that I’ve seen. Her wonderful chemistry with the rest of the Horde adds both to her charm, and really helped lighten things up on the villain’s side for the first 2-3 seasons, and her relationship with Hordak… Well, I’ll get to that shortly! 😉
The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Madame Razz. I figured Razz was going to be a fun mentor character, but I could have never suspected she’d be the best mentor I and Adora could ask for! I’m not familiar with her original counterpart, but whatever they had to work with, I applaud the crew for taking the silliest looking character in the original line-up and turning her into this charming little old lady whose equal parts Yoda and Ghibli grandma. (Or at least that’s how I describe her.) Her design gets special mention, too, for just how dang cute she is! The big glasses, the raggedy dress, big fluffy hair with moths flying around, and her witch broom all come together so well. Out of all Adora’s mentors, she’s the best— having no ulterior motives, agendas, or any manipulative or toxic behaviour laced into her teaching style, offers the best life advice she can to someone who clearly needs it out of kindness. And because she bears a certain resemblance to someone she once knew in a similar position.
The character everyone else loves that I don’t: Catra. Shocking right? Look, I know that she had an awful time growing up in the Fright Zone and by the end of the show she became more well-rounded and likeable. Any grief I have with her is pretty much over done with. Problem is though… it is pretty hard to forget everything she did. Now, I know it’s all in the past and a lot of people haven’t forgotten what she did either, and that some of it has to do with the ugliness of the Catradora vs. Entrapdak dynamic discourse and I don’t want to go into that. I really don’t. But put as simply as possible, she was a toxic friend, especially in regards to Adora (the Season 1 and 2/3 finales in particular) and Entrapta (who she betrayed, left to die after lying about her to her lover/best friend, and the offering the bare minimum of an apology), and escalated a war just to get back at Adora. After she tried to destroy REALITY to get back at her. I’m glad she changed but it still feels like too little too late.
The character I love that everyone else hates: Swift Wind. Sure, he’s a talking horse with a design that can wander a good ways into the uncanny valley, and who tries too hard too hard to be funny, but in spite of that I think he’s got a good heart behind that strange face of his. He does his best to be a good friend to Adora, supporting her both as herself and when she’s She-Ra, as well as doing his best to support Adora’s other friends as well (see “Boy’s Night Out”). Chiefly by trying to make light of Adora’s duties as She-Ra by trying help her find the fun and excitement in it. Of course, he doesn’t just try to keep the energy up, he shows genuine concern for Adora and all her friends, not hesitating to rush to their protection or point out when a situation seems especially dire. (see “Beast Island” and “Failsafe”). But I think my favourite example is from “Hero” where he casually reveals that he regularly checks in on Madame Razz because, as he says, “You gotta check up on old ladies alone in the woods.” What a horse!
The character I used to love but don’t any longer: Glimmer. I used to love her personality and her design. A peppy rebel who lived for adventure and a good friend to Adora and Bow. Even if she had her flaws like her impulsiveness and her stubbornness, she was still pretty likeable. But then she called her mom a coward for acting as a strategist and looking after Bright Moon, which ended up convincing her to sacrifice herself to close the rift at the end of S3. Alright, fair enough, some things can’t be avoided. Then she took over as queen, and I can understand there was A LOT of factors that were in play—namely grief and Double Trouble deliberately playing on her strained friendship with Adora and Bow as part of one of Catra’s plots—but boy howdy, did she start showing a pretty unsavory side what with her increasingly ruthless demeanor, trusting Adora’s abuser (hi Shadow Weaver, be with you in minute) over her, choosing to leave Entrapta in very real peril on Beast Island, and willingly using a weapon she knew could destroy all of Etheria to win a war. Perhaps I wouldn’t have minded as much if season 5 didn’t rush through her apologies and redemption so quickly, but the fact remains that Glimmer’s character took an awfully dark turn that’s not quite going to be so easily forgotten.
The character I would totally smooch: In a dark future where Entrapta never found love with Hordak, for one terrible reason or another, I would totally give her a smooch. I’ve said it before and say it again: Mad scientist princess is best princess! The character I’d want to be like: Bow. In some capacity I’m already like him, namely being super emotional and doing his damnedest to be a good friend even when things are tough, as well as being the voice of reason and a tinkerer (what? Tinkering with artsy stuff counts!). But I’d like to follow his example of being more level-headed, softer, optimistic, but also more assertive as opposed to my impulsive, harsher, cynical, and reserved current self.
The character I’d slap: Shadow Weaver. Need I explain? No, and anyway I can’t slap her anyways because she pulled the most manipulative heroic sacrifice I’ve ever seen. Dammit it, Shadow Weaver! (I really wanted to say Horde Prime but I feel like he wasn’t developed quite enough to be as hateable as he could be. Not to say that he isn’t an absolute piece of trash who deserved what he had coming already, but we didn’t get to spend three whole seasons getting to know the depths of his manipulative depravity while simultaneously weaseling his way into a twisted version of a redemption arc, unlike someone else I just talked about.)
A pairing that I love: Entrapdak. In case, it wasn’t already obvious. To summarize, in spite of all the drama that surrounds them and their actions, they honestly have the sweetest, most affectionate, and quite possibly the most healthy and engaging pair of the entire show (next to Spinnerella and Netossa, of course). Shoot, if it weren’t for these two and my hopes to see them reunite again, I would have left the fandom entirely at this point! (No seriously, I’m getting tired, folks.)
A pairing that I despise: Hordak X Horde Prime, but I think that’s the point, since most people use it to explore toxic relationships from a distance. Anyways, I really do not want to talk about abusive alien selfcest.

Choose between Merlin's death and Morgana's death. Then choose between Possesd Claire, Evil Douxie, and Gaylen's core Krel.
Oh, Merlin’s death, definitely. I wouldn’t say it redeemed him. In Trollhunters, he’s a grumpy, selfish old man who at best is jaded from living so long and operating on old-fashioned/outdated ways of interacting with people. At worst, he’s cruel and manipulative on purpose. Wizards doesn’t really do anything to redeem him for his actions, aside from clarifying that Morgana didn’t lose her hand until after she betrayed Merlin and the rest of Camelot, and also the reason why he (and Douxie, though subconsciously) are Like That towards Claire is because she was a handmaiden of the woman who was presumably Camelot’s princess.
However, Merlin’s death did recontextualize him. In Trollhunters, it seems like he only cares about himself. Sure, he doesn’t want for Morgana and Gunmar to destroy the world, but he’s fine with innocents potentially dying (and beating up Jim/being a jerk to everyone) to get his magic back (and also save the day from Morgana and Gunmar but in the way he thinks is best). In Wizards, it’s shown that he cares about his apprentices, but how much does he care about them? For most of the series, it seems like they’re not as important to him as the bigger picture. And yet, in his dying moments, he reveals that he loved Douxie as a son. It really makes you wonder just how much, under his selfish, cantankerous facade, he cared about other people.
Morgana, on the other hand, had an arc that fell flat. She needed a lot more redemption than Merlin did, and her redemption felt forced. Her death didn’t even recontexualize her past actions; it through them out the window in a blatant lie. “Neither of us can resist gravity!” says the bitch who, throughout the two shows she showed up in, was constantly levitating herself, and also forcibly levitating Claire. That’s definitely resisting gravity! It didn’t even make Toby, the guy who literally has gravity powers, plot important! Now, did she deserve to die? Yes. It would have been hard to create a believable place for her in the modern world post-Wizards (aside from maybe moving in with Douxie or moving to the wilderness and making a cottage with chicken legs for herself since she’s Baba Yaga). Her death just could’ve been handled better, like if she was having Toby kill her to kill Arthur in turn (and then the line about gravity could’ve made a little more sense), or if she decided that she was going to try and atone for her actions by saving one of the few people she directly hurt who’s still alive: Claire.
Second question: oh, that’s just cruel, making me choose between angsty options for the three characters I enjoy torturing.
Evil Douxie is easiest to eliminate, because you aren’t specifying if you mean willingly evil or unwillingly evil, and I’ve gotta say I always love unwillingly evil former heroes so much more than willingly evil ones. (Also, it’s harder for me to see Douxie as becoming willingly evil for long, because I can’t see him losing that much faith in people.) That being said, I might be giving you a different answer if he’s being forced to commit evil acts against his will 😈
Afterwards, between Possessed Claire and Gaylen's core Krel... hmm. I think I’ll have to go with Possessed Claire just because I like how it’s handled in canon (though I’d like her trauma explored more). Krel, I don’t know how well it’ll be handled in just one movie, if it becomes canon at all.

so what are your thoughts on the comic itself?
Anonymous asked: Okay, same anon from before: what did you think of the comic? (I agree with you on the lettering btw. It was hard to figure out the order of the bubbles too.)
Two asks for the price of one!! Okay here we go.
- Fat Nuggets is adorable.
- Between the comic and the pilot, Angel, Vaggie, and Charlie spend the majority of their three-way discussions in Charlie's limousine. I hope this becomes a running gag. I hope they only ever have serious conversations in the limo.
- Angel's box of toys that's had "for fun ❤️" crossed out and replaced with WORK SHIT breaks my heart.
- Why does Charlie as Lilo and Angel as Stitch work so well? Angel's even got extra arms he can extend and retract. Plot twist Hazbin Hotel was secretly an extremely elaborate Lilo & Stitch AU all along.
- I'd been hoping for a dynamic between Angel and Valentino that's closer to the common patterns of real world abusive relationships: where the abuser cycles between cruelty and kindness to make the victim think the abuser's gotten better and/or to make the victim think everything can be fine if only the victim tries harder to be perfect, and where the victim often has some affection for the abuser based on how charming the abuser was before he started showing his true colors. So based on that hope I'm a little let down by having seen Angel's full interaction with Val, because I didn't get a sense that there was much going on beyond flat one-dimensional constant cruelty and Angel uniformly having negative feelings toward Val for it. BUT this could have been a scene that happened at the apex of the "cruelty" side of the cycle, and it could be when Angel finally got pushed so far that any prior affection has finally been smothered, which could mean that cycle is still present somewhere in the backstory—and the fact that at the start of the comic Angel was probably trying to impress Val suggests that his feelings might not be universally negative (or at the least some part of him wants to get back to the “honeymoon” phase where they weren’t negative). But! It remains to be seen how it’ll be played out!
- I wonder what other people in Hell make of the fact that Hell’s biggest porn star—maybe biggest star, period—is also, like, available on a street corner from time to time. Not even for high-end limousine-and-five-star-hotel gotta-arrange-an-appointment-ahead-of-time style service. I’m assuming they don’t know it’s because his boss is being an asshole, since making those kinds of professional grievances too public would probably be bad for business for both of them, so it’s just... a thing that happens.
- I saw another post that pointed out that by the end of the comic Charlie and Vaggie have no idea Angel was out there as a punishment, they probably have no idea what his dynamic with Valentino is like, and like, that’s true, that could lead to some juicy drama.
- I kind of wonder how much Valentino knows, if anything, about Angel’s being at the Happy Hotel. He clearly doesn’t mind Angel living outside the studio, so did Angel just tell him he moved to a different place? Did he tell him he’s living in a hotel now and Valentino went “oh lmfao so you’re THAT broke”? Or has Angel not told Val his new address? Or did Val get told about the whole redemption shtick but get sold on it by a reassurance that Angel’s only going there for the free rent and Valentino’s own confidence that Angel can’t possibly straighten out his behavior in any meaningful way?
- Vaggie does marker drawings and that’s cute, I thought it was Charlie’s art until someone pointed out that Vaggie had signed it. Do Vaggie and Charlie just, like, illustrate their hotel plans in crayon and marker together. Is it a mutual tendency toward cute doodly art to illustrate their ideas. I choose to believe they both do this.
- Someone in one of my discords asked if Angel just sat there while Vaggie drew these illustrations of him getting redeemed, and I love the idea of him waiting in the limo like “I’m getting paid for this right? I’ve got an hourly rate—”
- Based on the fact that Angel taking out a whole gang is presented as him trying to be better than his current self, the thing that he aspires to as a step up in life, we could conceivably get an Angel “redemption arc” that’s like “I’ve wrested control of my life back from my asshole pimp boss! I’ve reclaimed my dignity, my self-esteem, and my ability to choose my own life path! I’ve decided to leave behind sex work... and become a MOBSTER!” and the idea of “mobster” being presented as a sign that he’s turned his life around for the better is hysterical to me.

BFCD Reviews by Nesha: Grace Monroe & The Infinity Train on HBO Max
Disclaimer: Post includes spoilers and also, this viewer does not deem Infinity Train as a children's show and my views are not subjected to the idea that this is a children's show, but I do regard the characters as children.
I’m not a psychiatrist. I haven’t taken a psychology class in many years. My work with children has been primarily trauma centered children, and I haven’t worked with typical children for a decade, so most of my opinions are from my personal life experience, my work experience, my children’s rights advocacy and activism, and the guidelines from my childcare specialist work for children in the system in the state of Texas. I don’t have a lot of information these days on typical children and I don’t know the culture of children all over the country or world, but I basically know a little something about traumatized children.
And as always, be nice, because I can be mean too (and will). 😉
Special thanks to @i-am-a-passenger for listening to me and being a SOUND sounding board for my thoughts through this experience that was season 3 of Infinity Train.
To be honest, I thought that it was extremely brave of the creators to go the route that they did with the story line. Not everybody can be saved is a take that we don’t see nearly enough, and whenever we do, usually a POC, oftentimes a Black girl is on the losing end of the tale. That didn’t happen here and despite some problems with some of the way that things played out in front of us, it was STILL a monumental moment for many fans and Grace’s redemption arc was valid and reasonable, so I loved it and I live for it. Now, I’m gonna give my review of the season and what I noticed about the characters...
First off, I think that the writing of this season was phenomenal. The style of the way the story was told impressed me from start to finish. There were moments that I didn’t expect, but I understood from a writing standpoint and for the characters presented. I’m not a professional writer, but it’s been a passion since I was 7 years old, so I have some experience with passion for writing and stories and a great narrative is my WEAKNESS, and I do believe that Infinity Train provides great narratives.
This season has been my favorite thus far. I would have appreciated it for the story content, even if they had switched the characters’ arcs or went in a different direction with the redemption arc, but the fact that I was able to see an example of a Black girl being able to BE HUMAN, at my age - 38 - is still such new content that I was honestly overwhelmed by the simple fact that the creators decided that this Black girl was worthy of not only redemption, but the attention to detail and consideration was enough for me to love this season.
The girl in question: 18 year old Grace Monroe, whose been on this train for something like 7 years.
Tumblr media
It’s rare to see a dark skinned, brown skinned, Black girl with natural hair be shown in anything but stereotypes and/or plot devices for other characters. This character has a story of her own. A beautifully written and fully realized story of a child who got confused, made bad decisions, did terrible things, learned the truth, and sought to change.
Whenever we first meet Grace and Simon, she’s announced as the leader of the Apex, and Simon is announced as her second in command and given the credentials from her, “I trust him with my life.” Something that is later a bittersweet thought as he becomes the biggest threat of her life since she got onto this train. They’re clearly very close and only seem to disagree on how they respond to negativity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of my favorite things about Grace was that she was given layers. One of my LEAST favorite things about Grace was that she was given unfair head canons by the fandom extremely early on (all of which nobody ever proved but remained diligently devoted to believing).
In this season, when the two are taken out of their comfort zone and traveling with outsiders, Grace and Simon are faced with lives that they haven’t thought about previously and wind up choosing very separate paths. Honestly, these paths they went on made perfect sense to me. I see both of them as traumatized children without any guidance and while one of them is very careless and reckless (Grace), the other is deliberate about what he does and has goals and plans.
The biggest influence, I think, was their interactions with denizens prior to forming the Apex. Grace admittedly never got to know any while Simon was betrayed by one whenever she left him behind to potentially die. Simon carried this rage inside of him while Grace had nothing but apathy to guide her attitude of the denizens. Grace needed attention and she was able to get that from Simon and the Apex, so she made a life built on what that gave her.
While Grace tends to seem to try to sweeten the issue or charm people. Simon is more short with others and a bit rude. They handle things much differently, though they have created a lifestyle together and formatted a society of children that they lead.
All too frequently, if a character looks like Grace, she is there as fodder for whoever her (usually white) counterparts are. But Grace has a unique situation in which she shares center stage with her white male counterpart and we watch them develop together from two peas in a pod to mortal enemies. It is a sad separation, but one that felt necessary for the direction of the story. But here’s why Grace matters so much, despite the fact that she and Simon built a child army and killed we don’t even know how many denizens:
Grace changed for the better. When both of them met and got to know a denizen, she began to change. She didn’t understand it at first and took some time to admit to herself that she was even changing. She thought that something was wrong with her because her number was going down and that wasn’t supposed to be how it was. What she thought was that it made her look weak and she didn’t want Simon or the Apex to see her that way.
And saying that Grace changed for the better is sort of shaky, too. Because Grace wasn’t a bad person to begin with. She was a child who got on the wrong track. Going from being extremely alone to having one friend to having hundreds or however many Apex kids of followers changed her for the worse, but she was a good kid at her core. She was lonely in the real world and she acted out, then wound up on this train, had a life changing event by having to see “The Conductor” and translate what happened to her as someone saving her, and she went on to help save others, or so she thought, to some degree.
Whenever she saved Simon, she had literally no reason to, other than she saw a kid in trouble and she knew she could help. She had just as little life skills and social skills as this kid in front of her, but... he was crying and she reached out to try to make him feel better, reminding him that even though life on the train was hard, he was alright now. Then, another life changing thing happened - Simon noticed that her number was higher and asked her how she got it so high. She knew just as much as him, and said that she was really good at life on the train, and the way she took that ghom out - she wasn’t completely wrong, but them being children and having only time and their limited views started a cult.
What I found interesting about this memory was the fact that Simon was telling Grace’s story for her. She tagged her charm onto it, but Simon (the writer of their laws and apparently a trilogy that not even Grace, who likes to read things wanted to read while they were besties) is telling the story to the kids. Probably embellishing, and Grace loves to be noticed, so she keeps this up until they’ve formatted an entire belief system. It was basically just I presumed whenever I questioned the reputation this fandom gave Grace as a manipulator who filled Simon’s head with hatred for denizens and Apex theology. It confirmed that people were wrong about her, which unfortunately didn’t make them change their minds, but they ain’t gotta. Grace lived and Simon died and that’s how this turns out sometimes.
I was able to at least acknowledge that his death was atrocious and it’s very unfortunate that he didn’t change for the better. He wanted control. He wanted power. He wanted to reign. Those things were more important to him than believing anything that went against his ideals. They were more important than Grace and his relationship with her. Meanwhile, Grace, up until even after he was gone cared about him. She defended herself whenever he attacked her, but she tried not to hurt him. She even tried to talk to him and he once again refused to listen. She saved his life AGAIN, and he still tried to kill her. Despite it all, when he was gone, she cried. Her friend was gone. Another life had been taken, and life meant something else to her now.
Even paper birds mattered now, and thanks to that difference inside of her, she didn’t die. But, I expected her to. Not even because it would’ve made sense or helped the story in any way, but because that’s how it usually goes for characters like her, characters who LOOK like her. The fact that it didn’t brought tears to my eyes. This season was amazing. This ending was amazing. This character was amazing. I’m so pleased with it and it was more than I expected, because instead of setting expectations, I let them tell me the story. They did an excellent job.
I've been asking people since she first appeared in season 2 why they thought that Simon was some helpless and she was this dominating figure that bossed him into this lifestyle and mostly it came back to her higher number. i didn't think we were being shown that, so I've been suspicious every time someone has suggested that Grace got Simon started in this or taught him this and now that it's been debunked, I'm even more irritated with the suggestion that her redemption doesn't make sense or wasn't right.
The thing about Simon was that he seemed fine. He seemed innocent, at times. He seemed like someone to sympathize with... What a lot of his fan base doesn't seem to realize is that is the case with every abuser. That is the case with many killers. Bad backgrounds and hard times coming up don't make for an excuse. Just because I GET his personality, doesn't mean he deserves respect or consideration. But then, we have Grace, on this other end who can't even get the recognition she earned through her decision making when she literally had the same childhood as him whenever they got there. Idk. Shit feels suspicious to me to not acknowledge Grace's redemption as well written. And the idea that Simon was doing these things for or because of Grace was proven as untrue, so there should have been a shift in her favor and there wasn't and my god that's some top shelf bullshit to me...
People frequently speak of Grace's manipulating Simon, possibly because they haven't had to try to use what you have to smooth someone over. The fact that Grace has been consoling Simon since they were children (THEY WERE CHILDREN), Because I see "Simon is a child" everyday, and always speak of his trauma, like Grace had none and like she's not the same age or near it. But, that's another thing that gets done to Black girls - they're aged up in people's prejudiced minds and expected to be more accountable than their peers. This GIRL has been repeatedly blamed for the issues of her friend.
And her "betrayal?" A lie she told to preserve life.
Simon proceeds to use her tape against her, leave her trapped inside of it (knowing it was dangerous, because the cat told him), sow lies about her in the Apex, pressure children that she knew to kill her, literally tried to beat her up and murder her, and kicks her as hard as he can after she saved his life AGAIN... He still gets more grace than Grace from the audience. I don't think people see Grace's humanity. People even assumed that her number was higher because she killed so many denizens... Like literally every wrong move doesn't affect numbers. And when faced with the story, which gives us a vulnerable Grace with flaws but also compassion, she's still been sidelined by fans of the show and nobody has given me any good reason as to why, so you already know, like we been knew. 😒
People have even tried to downgrade Simon's toxicity towards her because she led the Apex (and these people pretty much had similar things to say as people who didn't believe that my ex sexually abused me because of some examples of me being strong while arguing with him)...
Tumblr media
THIS was triggering as fuck, but I've barely seen a PEEP about it. I'm going to presume that problematic takes of Grace are from a place of discrimination and dehumanization against another Black girl character like fandoms usually do.
But that just makes her matter more.
Good job, Grace. I knew there was good in you all along, and I didn't have to make up anything about you in my brain. ♥️♥️♥️
Tumblr media
*Grace mourning a man that just tried to destroy her multiple times for telling a lie to keep him from killing a small child...
SPEAKING OF... The man double kicked her off that damn train in front of the kids AFTER they all saw her rescue him. Them kids might be messed up because of the Apex, but you can't tell me that Simon ain't further fuck them up with his reign. At least we know Grace was always nice to them. I'm glad they'll have each other to figure it all out.

Finishing up SoNY, ‘bad’ end and final thoughts!
But first, the early game over.
Wow, she just gets shot. Not even slurped? That’s rude as hell XD;;
And on to the ‘bad’ end!
Beginning is much the same, ofc.
“You’re too in love with weaving a good story and establishing a seductive narrative to let facts get in the way.” Foreshadowing for the ‘good’ end, maybe?
God that Embrace scene gives me literal goosebumps.
Alright! Last time I did Danse Macabre and Retributive Justice, let’s try The Risks of Swiping Right!
lmao god I’d eat this guy too. Back to the ghost club! That legitimately is a really neat scene. ...Ooh yes so that’s where the girl was from.
Panhard just lowkey dying at the mental image of Katherine Weise in a fast food restaurant is so good.
The sweet scene between Julia and Dakota hits a bit different after the ‘good’ end XD;;
Went to the park, reminisced, and helped out the guy. That was sweet ;_; High-humanity Julia, this time!
‘Fairy God Mother?’ is great but ‘Vin Diesel?’ is objectively the funnier response.
“Shining even more brightly than usual, Aisling.” Samira got a cru-ush~
Poor Julie. It’s probably been tough without Sophie around :(
Huh. Interestingly, refusing to lie to Mia results in Julia actually feeling genuine loyalty to the Cammies (for now, at least).
Believing Agathon is still alive = more optimistic = different dialogue! See, this is how you make choices have consequences, game!
Oooh boy time to meet Adelaide XD;;
“She uncrosses her legs in a strangely seductive motion. In her mind’s eye, it probably looked like Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct, but in reality, it had all the grace of a tracksuit Slav squatting.” *snickering*
Fight me, Adelaide >:(
‘sup Nastya. Went with the slightly less disruptive routine here XD Huh, she’s an aspiring DJ! Julia is deeply confused as to how being a DJ and being head of security works together.
lmao Julia referring to Hope as a girlboss. That phrase has lost all meaning to me...
The conversation between Julia and Father Leonard is still really interesting. Man, you know who I want Julia to talk to? Anatole. Interesting insights into balancing being queer Catholic vampires there for sure.
lmao oh my god I want to fight this street reporter.
‘I can almost feel my brain losing its wrinkles.’ *snort*
Yeaghhhh the Abyss bit is still so creepy...
Oops. Being honest regarding Tamika and Torque’s relationships gets a fail :(
Oh, or not XD That works! Also, uh, apparently the giant albino ghoul alligator is real, according to New York by Night. He’s Calebros’ pet.
“Because I think I have a pretty good nose for people’s auras. And when I take a good look at you... ...somehow, I have a feeling you’re a surprisingly decent person. Whatever way of unlife you choose, I hope you don’t change it. And that you remember my advice.” :)
“I know.” Oof.
“Hi.” “WAAAH!” lmao sorry Princess XD;; Just trying to imagine Qadir’s face as he tells Julia to find a 1990 glass statue of Scrooge McDuck... dying...
Oh she’s so a Toreador XD Low art options are a fantasy book, an anime DVD, or a video game... those can all be arty, though! And went with the anime DVD called ‘Ririsu no Daibouken’... that translates to ‘Adventures of Lilith’. How on the nose XD “The cover says ‘Lilith’s Carnal Carnival’.” Oh. Yeah, that’d do it XD
“This 90s original video anime presents us with a tale of five big-bosomed samurai warriors travelling through America in search of General Hastavista, The Incubus King. Don’t let all the titillation misguide you: the main draws here are peerless direction, a nearly avant-garde editing rhythm and dialogue that coyly comments on traditional gender roles in anime. Once you see the animation in the final battle, you’ll understand why it never fails to set a sakuga fan’s heart ablaze!”
Tumblr media
She’s my new favourite.
“So can I know your name now?”
“Hmmm... Let me think...
No. <3″
I need to stress that the heart appears in the dialogue box. Like. The actual less-than-three heart.
Didn’t investigate the rat this time, so Qadir did and I die. “Glad you’re alright, little guy.” Qadir...
Still not over the drunk blood doll rats.
Kaiser’s still a goddamn creep and this time Julia is not going too far. She still has her humanity, dammit. Final set of traits:
Loyal to the end
Glass half-full
Not into a bad cop schtick
Honesty is the best policy
No more human, still humane
Onwards to the ‘bad’ end! Oops, and Dakota still did the Single White Female thing XD;;
Man I’m still really curious who the ‘good friend’ is!!
Okay! Time for end game!!
So that’s the good friend, huh? “Let me phrase it differently, then. You’re not Ecaterina the Wise, the Agitator of Prague, a Brujah elder causing turbulences all over the world... are you?”
Mention of Christof! Mention of Christof doing shady shit :| Poor Hana.
“An immigrant from Eastern Europe comes to New York City, takes the position she always expected to find herself in, is molded into someone who is no longer herself.”
Julia and Dakota representing Carthage is kind of neat.
I want to say the mention of St Jude is a reference, but I’m not sure what to XD;; Is that from Redemption? Christof could have been the one to tell Hana that.
“Like a two-person human centipede loop or something. An Ouroburos? Or an, uhh, Mobius strip?” No, that’s the other traditionally Sabbat clan XD
That‘s. That’s a hell of a reconciliation XD “Yeah, let’s give it a try. By the way I’m on the run for my unlife, want to go to California and try to find utopia?”
Julia, wear a fucking mask XD
“Hey.”
“Yeah?“
“Do you love me?”
“... Of course I do. For now, at least.”
I still don’t know if I love her. Or even if I can love anyone, for that matter. I’m a fucking monster, after all. I don’t even know if we’ll exist next month. The prospects are not looking good. But although I can’t see myself in the rearview mirror right now...
...I will remember this image of us leaving the city, somewhat melancholic, and somewhat hopeful, forever. And maybe the meaning of this image will be clarified with time. Or maybe I will just force a more positive description on it, and that is what I’ll believe.
No matter what happens... even if oceans of blood lie before us, I will make this a cherished memory.
Whatever possible salvation still remains for me... ...it probably lies in the eyes of another.
Oh dang I have chills.
So the ‘bad’ ending is about the subverted compromise. Julia resigns herself to letting the compromise about the truth of Callihan’s death go ahead. ‘Catherine’ is a walking compromise to hide the Ecaterina’s real deeds. But while Hana is still stuck in her role for now, Julia refuses to accept the compromise she’s made, both the one relating to the investigation and the compromise she made of her own views and morals. It might blow up in her face, yeah. But damn, she’s going to try.
So, final thoughts! For the sake of completion, this is what I said about Coteries:
And of course this is the part where the game all falls apart :-\
Just… god. This is probably the biggest problem with CoNY, and the reason I didn’t bother getting it until it was like… 60% off. The bulk of the game is great - the writing is intriguing, the design is stunning. But the choices themselves are so limited it’s barely worth even getting it at 60% off!
You have three choices of characters, with their own opening chapters and own individual scenes with their touchstones. You have four choices of coterie members, and three sidequests. You can probably get in at least three full story arcs and a sidequest or two, but you’re only ever limited to two of your coterie members showing up at the not-yet-endgame.
So let’s say you decide to play all three protags, which, indeed, is encouraged (there’s an achievement for it). You are going to repeat coterie arcs and side quests, because there simply aren’t enough for three unique playthroughs.
And then you get to the end and literally everything is scripted. You get attacked by the SI. You get rescued by your two coterie members (and then never see them again, despite the game being called Coteries of New York). You meet Torque, you escape the SI, Sophie reveals her plan to Torque, you go to Ellis Island, Adelaide kills Sophie (and despite the fact that you’re given multiple options there, none of them work), Arturo does his spiel, end of game. You don’t even get to choose between ending up blood bound or going “no fuck you” and at least dying with a bit of dignity!
I just. I really want to like it, and there genuinely is a lot there to like! But uuuugh the ending. Like damn at least give the poor protag the option to choose what happens to them!
Anyway. Not sure what’s next. To get all the achievements, you have to finish with all three protags, so that’s three full runs and a lot of repetitiveness (compare to, say, Bloodlines or Night Road. I have eighty-five hours on Night Road and there’s still stuff I haven’t seen!), so I can’t even just… rush it through up to the meeting with the touchstones on the third play. Nope. Gotta finish it :-\
Final rating: 6/10
8/10 characters, 9/10 atmosphere, 8/10 story aside from ending, 3/10 story ending, 2/10 replayability. Final consensus: get it on major sale if you can, otherwise, you might as well just watch an LP. I might do that instead of doing a third run, although I at least want to do a second.
I ended up revising that 6/10 to 5.5/10 after finishing all runs and getting the achievements just out of how goddamn repetitive it was. So, how does Shadows measure up?
Absolutely continued with all the things I enjoyed about CoNY (characters, atmosphere, and writing), and of the bits I hated (cookie cutter protagonists, lack of real choice, repetitiveness, the godawful ending), every single part has been completely improved.
Instead of three fledglings so similar they even have the same internal thoughts, we have Julia, who’s got such a distinct voice that she becomes the most memorable game protag I’ve seen in years, and I’m including non-VtM games in this. This is absolutely her game, and it’s just... absolutely fascinating to read and watch.
Related - actual real choices. There are five key choices that determine the ending, and every single one has actual consequence in-game. You get different dialogue. Different introspection. Different philosophies. And this carries across - if Julia believes Agathon is alive, she’s more optimistic about her relationship with Dakota, too. And of course, both endings are completely distinct and incredibly written - the ‘good’ ending where Julia gives in to her most Lasombra instincts, plays the game, wins it, gets power and respect at the expense of her humanity and avoiding all those wraiths... or the ‘bad’ ending when she listens to her morals, reconciles with Dakota, and leaves for California, uncertain, but hopeful.
Not a lot of repetitiveness. Yes, by design, you’ll probably do two playthroughs. The main plot is much the same, but there are enough options there to get multiple dialogue options and stuff. And for the little sidequests, you can actually get all in with just the two playthroughs, only repeating like... two, I think. Still, I wasn’t feeling actively bored like I was midway through my second run of CoNY!
Loved seeing more in-depth backstory and development for the coterie members. Agathon’s section was particularly fascinating, literally getting into his head.
And just. Atmosphere and music is so, so good.
Final rating: 9/10. Thank you, Draw Distance, you hit it out of the park.

Dabi's Decision (Warning spoilers!)
To start off again, spoilers for bnha so don't read if you don't wanna be spoiled for future anime/manga stuff
Oml I'm literally CRYING over this Dabi reveal rewrite I was thinking about recently
The Shoto Family Crisis is something that really hits home for me as I have personaly experience dealing with those type of people (cough cough ENDEAVOR COUGH)
But first I gotta talk about whats actually happening before my idea
But as much respect as I had for Dabi as a villain character and even for the first few moments as Todoroki's brother, from what I have seen from a translation of the reveal here on tumblr I was really disappointed. Like yes It could just have been the translation since i haven't seen all of the offical thing, but I getthe feeling thats not the case.
All that respect for Dabi goes away when he made his argument. He basically said "Dad was mean to me so I killed off a bunch of random innocent people who have done me no wrong for no good reason but LOOK *points at endeavor* he drove me to this. He made me do it."
Like somebody near him is gonna comedically slap him and say "Bad endeavor! >:cc"
This isn't to downplay Touya's trauma, it was real and probably the harshest since he was the first experiment and also considered the first failure. He ended up so ghosted that his own family thought he was dead.
But when he hurts other innocent people for his own goals JUST like his father did, not only is he ending up just like him, he is playing right into his hands. Endeavor wants someone to surpass him, someone to pass down his legacy of strength and ruthlessness, however it happens. Actually its quite the norm for toxic people to try and pass on their behaviors, try to clone themselves on the next generation.
Even with endeavors supposed redemption arc, the effects his decisions have on the past don't change, as this event was supposed to help solidify.
Honestly its the worst way to get back at Endeavour and you just end up being just like the abuser. Why is it such a common trope that "if I was abused by someone, Let me go do the same thing to someone else who literally has never tried to hurt me in my life?" Notice how they never target the abuser, they just seek to abuse someone else, thus continuing the cycle. The stupidest part of Touya's argument is that he is trying to make it seem like its endeavor who made him choose these actions.
But thats the thing. It was STILL Touya's choice to make. And yeah it sucks, often times an abuser will use this fact to their advantage, but when it comes down to it, Touya made the choice to do wrong. It's not like endeavor said "Yo kill these 5 people with your fire power to prove your worth or I burn your skull yeah?"
He made the choice to hurt multiple people who had hope and a future like he once did.
He made a choice that led to him becomong the next abuser, and becoming as delusional as the person who abused him.
But lets say things go different from how its currently going down in the Manga. Here'ss my idea: where it takes place I could care less but lets use the same place the canon did, the theater
But imagine Dabi reveals himself to Endeavor, the crowd and Todoroki and reveals who he is, Touya. He then goes on to revealing Endeavors little experiment and how he used all his family just to live out his dream of surpassing the symbol of peace and having someone stronger than him so he could live vicariously through him.
Dabi goes on to explain as he was considered "a failure" he was cast aside and ghosted, and left distant from his other siblings Endeavour didn't want to be effected by Touya the failure.
Dabi explains how he knew no-one would listen or care about some kids who were being used and no-one would dare challenge or try to smear the reputation of the second greatest hero, so Endeavor was basically untouchable. So Dabi devised a plan
Dabi explains that by becoming a villain, he was able to train unhindered by rules and regulations that hold heroes back and the keep them from exercising their power to the fullest. He explains how he only used his flames to burn those deserving (actual crooks, slavers, other abusers maybe, looking at you overhaul) and how by having less concern for his own well being he could push past his limits.
Even though his Flesh itself burned his power grew until now it was something that could rival/surpass allmight's. Dabi then displays immense amount of power for the world to see, nearly burning up an entire mountain or something to ash. And he eas able to do this all with just 1 quirk. FIRE. For a failure he managed to do the one thing Endeavor always wanted. Be stronger than Almight, and he did it with just.FIRE.
He mocks endeavor. Look at you. Always wanted to ve number 1 but never could. Even now you are stuck in second place in your own heart. But Look now, your failure has achieved your dream. Maybe if you had shown the world the villain you showed your family you could have been number one.
"Look! Gaze upon your Son! See as the Fire chars my very Flesh!?This is it! THIS IS WHAT YOU ALWAYS WANTED! GAZE UPON THE WORLDS NUMBER 1!"
now that in itself is a heartbreaker and would be were maybe another fic writer would stop, but oh no, ya'll still got tears to cry so get ready
Todoroki is in shock now the only words he can make out is "Touya..."
And thats when Touya turns his attention to Todoroki "ahh...my dear Todoroki."
Touya then goes on to explain how this plan he devised was not for himself, but rather, for Todoroki and the rest of his family. He wanted the world to see endeavor for who he was and what he is, so that hopefully, his siblings could have a better future.
Touya goes on about how proud he is of Todoroki for showing how strong he was and that even though he came from people constantly making wrong decisions, he could make a right decision. Even going so far as to reject his own flames at one point.
Touya then goes into a heartfelt speech, and Tells Todoroki
"Listen. I could never tell you to join me or go down the road I took. I would never do that. The Path I took was to build the bridge to Your better tomorrow. I want you to be the best hero you can be."
"I don't want you to be the next symbol of peace or the next Allmight. I want you to live for yourself, be what you WANT to be. Because even though he may have robbed me of my future, your future is something he can never have. "
Omg 😢😭😭😭
Touya you deserved so much moreee
But thats the point.
He did, they all did. And thats what this version of Touya was trying to tell the world. Nobody knows how hard it was, the pain and suffering it took. The stress of Todoroki's body to only reject a quirk probably heavily tied to his emotions and half his whole body, but also the stress it caused from not using it, his father breathing on his neck at every waking moment trying to force him to use it.
And thats just the tip of the iceberg. Getting misinterpreted because he's so focused on defeating the real evil in his life.
Man Todoroki gets so shorthanded in both life and in writing by the author it hurts my soul. I know he has so much potential but he gets dragged down or down played by every little things, especially he who shall not be nam- BAKUGO ITS BAKUGO GAHHH
Ahem. I think I was overtaken for a single moment. Pardon me~☆
But nah none of this toddler "he made me do itttt." Angwy points 3:<
And none of that "Oh Todoroki you have forsaken meeee."
Like for real if anybody aughta know endeavor probably made up some crap lie about him Touya should, thats all that man do, I already KNOW.
And before anybody says you're being too hard on them this is why nobody wants to do redemption
Its called redemption for a reason, first off it ain't supposed to be easy befitting the cause. Second, fake or flakey redemption is the pitts and there is too much of it being sugarcoated and presented on a Platter thank youuu
Only gonna throw one more jab in here but
The Author literally told us how horrible Bakugo is by showing us he had to have amnesia and not receive one for all from the movie or he woulda kept it. They coulda had him give it back to deku, even if it was just an ego thing for him and I, who have not had a reason to respect him in the whole series, would have actually respected that and taken it as a clear sign of change.
But no. Amnesia cop out cowabunga it was.
Okay I think I got this outta my system thanks everyone.

And Theon bc I love him
WHAT A COINCIDENCE I LOVE HIM TOO (this answer is gonna be a combination of books and show)
Send me a character and I’ll tell you the following:
• Did they live up to their potential? / In what ways was their potential unachieved?
-I would say yes. The only negative I have about his general arc is his death (which, see below). But Theon from the very beginning was, though not a particularly nice person, still relatable. Feeling othered, wanting to be accepted by an immediate environment that doesn’t accept you, isolated from and ostracized by your family, and the tension that comes between serving the different types of familial relationships in your life. Theon has no idea who he is, tossed aside by his blood family for not growing up with them and being “soft,” aka sort-of moral and having emotions that aren’t selfish rage or smugness (which, yep, that second part is a mood, see: my entire childhood and how no one wanted to be around an “emotional” “soft” child). And from there, he spirals out of control in a way that, while certainly not admirable by any stretch of the imagination, is still understandable in the context of the narrative and his characterization. And from there, after going through hell and quite literally losing himself (even to the point of straight-up denying rescue), he builds himself back up gradually, to the point where he expressed extreme regret for what he’s done, helps an innocent woman escape a truly horrifying situation, acknowledges that his family is generally garbage, and (in-show b/c again books aren’t finished), helping to restore his sister to power, rescuing her after his PTSD relapses while confronting Euron, and ultimately opting to protect the Starks come hell or high water in order to genuinely atone for what he’s done. He is no longer conflicted because he wants to do the right thing, and that right thing is defending the kingdom from the White Walkers and making sure Sansa and Bran are safe. And it’s no longer about fulfilling a duty or finding a family to fill the void. Because now he has found himself. I will contend that Theon has one of the best, most nuanced, most organic redemption arcs of all time. I will forever be grateful that I got to see that piece of storytelling unfold.
Although, I would love to know what he thought of Dany. A missed opportunity, that.
• How they negatively and positively affected the story.
-Positive: His arc of identity and finding where your loyalties lie ties into the overall theme of “How do you find yourself in a world where goodness, authenticity, and honesty are often punished and increasingly rare?” And it proves that governmental politics aren’t the only defining factors in decisions: familial politics can be just as difficult and dangerous, which adds yet another rich, complicated layer to the overall story. He has a genuine, honest-to-Drowned-God redemption arc, which is...not really present anywhere else in the story (no, Jaime is not on a Redemption Quest, I will die on this hill). But I think the biggest draw of Theon’s presence is that it deconstructs the whole “Character Revenge Fantasy” idea. He does bad things. We want him to be punished. But not like that. No one deserves that. How far is too far? What does retribution really look like? Given how easily that idea can be abused and go off the rails, is retribution even something to strive for? What is the point of using extreme violence/torture/mutilation/breaking someone’s psyche when it doesn’t really accomplish anything? Isn’t atonement and genuine justice a better option? It certainly was for Theon. He could only piece himself back together and do anything meaningful once he was out of his abusive environment. All of these are imporant questions that are posed by his existence in the narrative.
-Negative: Idk if I have much to say here. My biggest problem is his death (see below), but that’s not really a negative story effect so much as...being disappointing and narratively irrelevant. I gotta say, his introduction via his sister was...really weird. I genuinely have no idea why GRRM wrote that. It never came up again or had any kind of narrative ramifications and kind of cast a strange, uncomfortable light on his relationship with Asha/Yara for the remainder of the story. I can ignore and enjoy their later relationship it if I don’t think about it too hard, though, so I guess I’ll chalk it up to GRRM having a Bad Idea.
• What my favorite arc for them is.
-All of it?? Theon’s journey is kind of...one big arc, which is why I think it works so well. He has this overarching redemption plot which spans the entire series and informs every decision he makes (for good or for bad, depending on where in the aforementioned journey he is). The redemption arc isn’t bogged down with side plots or other pieces of narrative clutter, meaning it has time to grow and, thus, be gradual and realistic. If I had to choose a specific point, it’s probably when he tries to reintegrate back into society via supporting Yara. Gaining the Iron Islands’ support for her ruling, spiriting away with Euron’s fleet, and ultimately rescuing his sister after her capture. He can’t just go back into society. He’s scared. He has really bad PTSD. But he recognizes that putting his home in good hands is something bigger than just him because it’s Yara’s home, too. I just...I really love family relationships, y’all.
• What I think of their ending.
-I’m not really sure how I feel about this one. I get that the series is GrimDark™ and that people who make the right choice and fight for good die all the time, but Theon dying just felt...wrong. To me.
And, like...I get it. It makes sense to parallel his original descent into villainy (cemented by executing those two boys and pretending they were Bran and Rickon) with him dying to protect Bran himself. It ties into the whole very common trope of completing a full redemption arc by committing a completely selfless act at great personal cost. It’s kind of like the whole Missy thing in Doctor Who (which...hoo boy, that post is coming, make no mistake), where selfishness is directly opposed by making the ultimate sacrifice with no motivation for personal gain. And the fact that the last words he ever heard were “You’re a good man?” I cannot even begin to describe how much that makes me sob. But...honestly, I’m really tired of this idea that redemption has to end in death in order to be achieved or “complete.” I think it’s much more poignant to have a redeemed character live to help build a better world. Because what’s the point of telling people to be better if the “reward” is death? No one’s going to want to reform themselves if they think that’ll be the result.
I think the thing that Bugs Me™ the most is that Theon never really got to have a moment of peace when he was alive. Sansa gained the North’s love and at least had a secure childhood. Ned and Cat were happily married for years. Arya had parents who loved her and a good relationship with Jon. Jon fell in love with Ygritte and found his Night Watch Bros, and Robb (in show verse) had some very happy moments with Talisa. Davos put great stock in what he considered fulfilling friendships with Stannis and Shireen; Brienne was treated respectfully by Renly, Catelyn, and Sansa; Missandei and Grey Worm had each other and their friendship with Dany, who herself had many personal successes in her quest for the Iron Throne and saw the death of her abusive brother. Cersei even had moments with Jaime (who himself had several notable military victories and at least some time with Myrcella, as well as being gladly and deeply in love, however dysfunctional that love was), times when she successfully fought off enemies (including her dad), and some sweet moments with Tommen, as well as a huge victory via blown-up sept at the end of season 6. Theon was treated as a second-class family member by the Starks his whole life by being “traded” to them as a condition of war resolution AS A BABY, is immediately disparaged and mistreated by his immediate family when he tries to return to them, makes terrible decisions that almost cost him his conscience completely, is brutally tortured by Ramsay, is on the run with his sister from Euron almost immediately after, and has a PTSD attack that ultimatly results in him having to launch a rescue mission. And then he fights ice zombies. And then he dies. He never really...got to be happy at all? There was never any kind of “win” for him. Not even survival. The narrative couldn’t even give him that.
TLDR: Theon’s death seemed less shock-value-y than others (like, for example, Shireen or Missandei or, heck, Melisandre even), and it isn’t the worst thing I’ve ever seen. It’s narratively-informed and it makes sense as an emotional through-line, but, ultimately, Redemption Cemented By Selfless Death is a tired trope, and I honestly thought this story (which...you know...serves as a deconstruction of common fantasy tropes/book tropes in general) was better than that.
• When I wish they had died. / If I think they should’ve died.
-So here’s where we get personal™ kids.
So, it’s no secret that I am...severely mentally ill. I’ve talked about expression/presentation of mental illness in regard to Cersei a lot on this blog, and how that (as paradoxical as it may seem) helped bring a sense of comfort and emotional resonance to me. Theon, post-Ramsay, has, I think, a very clear case of PTSD. Theon is one of the few characters I’ve seen where his mental illness isn’t the cause of the bad, violent, dangerous choices he makes. It only takes root after he has made the decision and conscious effort to better himself, and it, rather than demonizing him, serve to humanize him. His trauma didn’t define him. And although a PTSD attack led to him unintentionally losing Yara to Euron’s capture, he makes every effort to rescue her, a goal he does end up achieving. It is so rare I get to see a character who goes through these things, successfully fight them and come out with positive qualities at the end. Like...switching topics a bit here, Jaime going back to King’s Landing to (try to) escape and ultimately die with Cersei made sense to me because, as Jaime says, he is a hateful man. He never made much of an honest effort to be anything else. And he never truly wanted to be good; he just wanted to be liked. He wanted to adopt some personality that would make him feel less disconnected from the rest of the world. But Theon...genuinely feels remorse for everything he’s done. He makes a concerted effort to do everything in his power to improve the lives of people he believes are good and deserve to be safe. So, just...killing him off in a Completely Selfless Sacrifice (like...you know how a lot of mentally ill people put themselves through suffering-like OCD rituals, bottling feelings, self-harm, even suicide-in a misplaced attempt to “help” or “protect other people”) seemed antithetical to everything we saw of his arc.
Ultimately, with such a humanizing, empathetic portrayal of trauma and mental health struggles, seeing Theon be killed off just...pissed me off. I am so tired of seeing mentally ill characters die. I really want to believe that I can live through and thrive in spite of the things that afflict me, and I get example after example of characters not being allowed to do that. It feels awful, quite frankly. And it makes hope that much harder.
I also just feel like...there was nothing the story gained from his death? I get the thematic parallels as mentioned earlier, but it didn’t really move the story forward in any significant way. It didn’t motivate other characters to do anything, it had no political ramifications, it didn’t serve to contribute to any kind of happy ending or commentary on society, it just...was sad. Again, I thought this story was better than that.
