Milestone Monday

On this day, January 29, 1845, The Raven was published in The Evening Mirror marking the first time the poem was published with the name of the author, Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849). At the time of publication, Poe was working as a critic for The Evening Mirror in New York and his poem was met with instant praise and popularity, although not much financial success.Β Β
To commemorate the day, we’re sharing The Raven published in 1927 by The Bibliophile Society out of Boston. The Bibliophile Society was founded by Charles E. Hurd in 1901 to study and promote β€œthe arts pertaining to fine bookmaking and illustration” with the intent to publish books of useful literary purpose outside of the element of rareness. The Society’s treasurer and founding member, Henry H. Harper (1871-1953), wrote an extensive introduction and commentary for The Raven bestowingΒ his idealsΒ on the importance of preserving exceptional literature upon its membership readers. Β
The book was printed anopisthographically on parchment paper and bound in full calfskin with gold border lines. Title page engravings by Sidney L. Smith and Arthur N. Macdonald greet readers while dry point etchings by Haydon Jones (d.1954) bookend the text. Tissue guards printed with red text mirror each etching. Special Collections copy of The Raven was a gift from our friend Jerry Buff and bears the bookplate of Charles J. Hardy.Β

alright hold on hold on hold on we're doing 3am gender thinking again
so the initial idea of my views on gender that occurred to me at 5am last time in what was probably a manic episode is fuck gender I can't fit the boxes expected of me so I'll dismantle the whole system and do my own thing
so problem is I can't do that, I can't dismantle the whole system and go my own way because I am entirely dependent on the sex and gender systems we have in place and how other people view sex and gender
additionally the idea that gender itself is the outdated stereotypical system is flawed, gender is the way a person feels and we've made categories and boxes to describe incredibly complex feelings
the problem is the more specific a gender gets, the smaller that box gets, the more people are excluded from that box so the solution is another box that fits better or make their own like with neogenders
the solution is a line of gender boxes like hermit crabs...
the fun part about thinking of gender and stuff is that I personally believe that every single person on earth experiences gender and life differently from every other person, even if only slightly
so theoretically if every person on earth were to describe their gender outlook and gender experiences and form a gender identity from that, then there could theoretically be 8 billion god damn genders
the solution is more genders
the solution is running Doom (1993) on my fucking gender

re: elf servants
I think generally there are servants in royal/noble households simply for practical reasons and they generally fall into 2 categories: specialised servants (think, stewards and messengers and scribes, masters of horses or kennels, that kind of thing) and servants who help with the upkeep of the household (cleaning, repairs, cooking and also the apprentices and assistants of specialised servants)
specialised servants are probably quite prestigious roles and fields of industry in their own right, and they are considered full members of a household, and probably are closely linked to the person they serve - it's as much a political and social statement to be Finwe's chief scribe as it is an economic one
but the second category are more associated with the house than the family living in it - for example, Finwe's palace in Tirion would function both as a home and a diplomatic and administrative centre, it would be impossible for him to rule and keep up with chores himself. But Fingolfin's personal home would probably not have any full-time servants - when there more people than usual to feed or house then professionals might be hired, but for the most part I imagine the day to day is done by the family (made possible by the fact elves sleep and eat less than humans)
IRL domestic service (at least in the 18th century) often functioned as a kind of prep stage for adult life (for women in particular, but gender is probably not as big a factor for elves) and I could definitely see this in Valinor - domestic servants being 80% elves between 50-100 who haven't chosen an apprenticeship or similar in another field who are earning extra money to set up their own households, getting experience outside of the family, meeting others in their own ae cohort, learning independence etc. It's a job that comes with the offer of room and board + the wages a king/prince/lord can provide. Not glamorous, but not terrible.
The other 20% is made up of professional servants - experienced elves who are genuinely like the work and are contracted workers as much as a builder or gardener might be. Some of them might be independent and others part of businesses set up by other elves who are really into cooking/cleaning etc.
In Beleriand the situation (for the exiles at least) is probably very different, though I think there would be attempts to adapt the system - but there aren't as many households that need servants and there aren't as many young elves.

was looking through my drafts and saw the beginning of a fic where the idea was essentially that there was a man in the mirror in todd's childhood bedroom
and todd used to be scared when he came out, knowing that he couldn't tell anyone, he'd outgrown monsters in the dark, after all. his parents no longer fondly laughed and his brother no longer welcomed him in his own room
it was really just todd these days
and the man in the mirror
eventually todd could not avoid him, weeks after huddling under his blanket in fear and getting scolded for throwing his bed sheet over the mirror
so he braved himself up and approached him
see the thing was, the man in the mirror did not seem to see him
he only came by now and then, in the mirror, frequently enough or stood to be wary, not frequent enough for anyone else to notice
but the man in the mirror was kind, todd knew it
he knew it from his warm brown eyes that crinkled when he laughed at something todd could not see
so it went on like this, todd and the man in the mirror -- the portal really to another person's life
when the man appeared, todd would talk to him, he'd read him his books and his own poetry, tell him about his day, and the man, in his brief visits never interrupted him -- todd knew it was because he couldn't hear him, but it was still nice
one day, while cleaning, his mirror broke and todd was inconsolable to the point even jeff started to notice him (tho he gave him a long drawn out lecture about how to deal with leaving ur childhood behind)
but in todd's life he has no real room outside the man in the mirror to feel anything so he compartmentalizes and tries to move on
he's almost sure that the man in the mirror is a figment of his imagination, a product of loneliness until he's shipped off to welton
and his roommate comes to him and smiles and introduces himself and -- and it's a little off, he doesn't have the laugh lines the man had, nor the broadness of the man's shoulder, but if todd squints and imagines this person in front of him as an adult, he can kind of see...

gggggggggggoslings or summer is immanent
last night i dreamt i was at a party with my twin sister. it was a reunion of distant relatives with familiar faces like distorted versions of our oldest memories. on leaving, we found ourselves in another party, this one full of frantic revelry, and then another party, and another, and another, and another, until finally we emerged on a wide boulevard full of brightly lit shops. as we walked through the city at night, we shared our stories, and we laughed when noticed the storefront displays had arranged themselves into funny echoes of our tales
