Is Lord Voldemort incapable of loving?
One of the few certainties we Voldelovers have about the Dark Lord – because of the author’s owns words – is that the Dark Lord does not love. He is unable to love because of his mother’s absence during his first years of life, the abandonment of his muggle father and the overall absence of a supportive environment for his emotional and psychological development. I personally think this is a huge step forward from the assumption that he can’t love because of the Love Potion’s mess, but I also strongly think that as much as the Harry Potter’s Series has very original hints, they are isles in a sea of badly written tropes; and, since I’m very much bored because of these godforsaken lessons, I’m going to share my opinion on in this matter here.
First, what does it mean to love in the Harry Potter series?
I personally think that the author perception of love is a bit distorted and, like many of us already pinpointed in the past, she accepts a common misconception of our culture: true love is sacrifice.
When did love become sacrifice? When did true love become loss?
This is of course rooted in Christian’s culture. The sacrifice of Christ is the ultimate example of love and if we love truly, we sacrifice ourselves (body, mind, and soul). Even more so if you are a woman, and therefore mother and wife. Lily Evans, the greatest example of love in the series, is a symbol of this societal – and eventually sexist – value. As you can imagine, and as we see every other day, this has terrible consequences in the way we build and perceive relationships: we expect ourselves and others to sacrifice themselves for love. We require sacrifice to think – and therefore feel – love.
So, I’d like to set off from stating the assumption that ANY kind of love in the Harry Potter Series is somewhat distorted and both the greatest minds of the books – Voldemort and Dumbledore – manipulate this reality to make others do what they want. Both know love but use it in different ways.
Dumbledore uses this sacrificial love not only to manipulate others into doing his bidding but also to create a separation between “good-us” and “evil-them” (while Voldemort uses blood). I don’t know whether he is conscious of perpetuating this erroneous myth about love or if he himself feels love this way, but this is a fact: he forces his idea of love on others, and this eventually brings them to their greatest sacrifices. For one, Harry himself wholeheartedly believes in this, that he and Voldemort are inherently different because he can love and is loved back, while Voldemort is unloved and can’t love back. He comes to accept his own death and the idea of killing Voldemort (another living being) because, without the ability to love, he is beyond redemption, he can’t be spared.
This, of course, protects Harry from truth: he eventually WILL become a murderer (as much as a Death Eater), but – as we see in real life – if you kill the right target, you can’t be considered a real murderer.
Voldemort, on the other hand, uses his ability to appeal and be loved by others to escalate in his social environment and gain what he wants. He does this during his Hogwart’s years, and I believe that during the First War he gets even smarter in this, manipulating his followers’ desires for closeness to their Master. He uses their assumptions on love (again, sacrificial love) to make sure their sacrifice is for him. I believe that, before the fall, he was loved by many, not in the maternal way of Lily Potter, but in the way we love our heroes.
Because of this, Dumbledore is right: Love is a great form of power.
But, what about Voldemort’s own ability to love then?
I believe, like many others have said, that Voldemort is incapable of sacrificial love (and on some level I’d say “Thank goodness”): his whole life’s purpose is not to sacrifice himself but to legitimate his persona. But is sacrificial love the only kind of love that exists?
Let’s take a few steps back to understand the way Voldemort perceives himself in this big world of mutual relationships.
He comes from nothing, he’s raised as “nothing” and, to survive, he had to fight against an external force that denied him in every way (physical, psychological, and emotional). His constant struggle is to run away from annihilation. Sometimes, he succeeds, other times he fails and hurts himself. Fighting against the feeling of being nothing, he starts accumulating objects, followers, knowledge, power.
If we agree on these premises, we also must agree on the fact that attachment is something Voldemort must be capable of. I mean by attachment the ability to form a one-sided relationship with an external object and project some kind of identification on it. This is a very immature kind of love we all somewhat experienced when we were babies, when we were unable to accept in our very unstable inner world the concept of “The Other”. It’s not mutual – he would hate to be somebody else’s – but he feels attachment for things, places and even people that give structure his persona. One way we can be sure He feels attachment is that he can feel betrayal, he suffers when he loses things (and people) he is attached to (e.g., Bellatrix, of course). He feels attachment because he’s a collector (of things, places, power, and people). It’s selfish and immature but nonetheless it’s a kind of love. Of course, it’s distorted because he’s a grown man with the affectivity of a child.
I personally don’t think this is sicker than Dumbledore’s sacrificial love, maybe less sophisticated since Dumbledore’s kind of love is a sublimated version of Voldemort’s, but both are distorted forms of interpersonal relationship, and both are ways of controlling people.
Does Voldemort know that what he feels is love?
One quote that I personally love and that I freely take from the brilliant words of Andrea Judith is: “Intelligent Love is a Love that is conscious of loving”.
I think that Voldemort’s disadvantage on this matter is that he knows that love exists, he manipulates it in others (he knows he can ask Bellatrix the world and she would give it to him, he knows Barty would sacrifice himself for him in a different way than others would…) but he is not conscious of when this feeling (in its unripe state) arises in him and he is often blindsided by the effects of his attachments. This is a whole other thing than saying that he is not capable of any kind of love. He’s not intelligent in loving because he never learned to manage this feeling, but he is not deprived of it.
I believe this makes him even more interesting and gives his character and his relationship with others a whole different nuance that I can’t wait to explore further. I hope that those who had the pleasure of following me till this point will be somewhat intrigued with this argument and I wish some of you will be happy to share their opinion with me.
Yours,
                                                                                                              Mathildis.

I posted this to my AO3 account, as is. But as I said in my ending note, not really much of a “story” maybe a plot at best. So if someone wants to take it, in whole or in part, and flesh it out as their own, feel free.
So there’s another prophecy that Dumbledore was privy to that nobody else knows about speaking of the chosen one and the daughter of the seventh child, a seventh child herself bringing about the dawn of the new age of magic.
Dumbledore is so magically xenophobic that he is certain this seventh child cannot come from outside of the magical world. So he starts searching. Arthur Weasley is the only person he knows who is a seventh child. Families simply don’t get that big. So that has to be the father in the prophecy. He’s recently married Molly Prewett, the vivacious, attractive head girl and quidditch captain to Arthur’s head boy from Gryffindor. This might take some thought.
Dumbledore gets to know the young, just graduated couple. He asks them about kids and their plans. Arthur has just taken an entry level position in the ministry, it doesn’t pay much but there are prospects. Molly has several offers to play professional quidditch and they don’t plan to start a family anytime soon, not until they have their financial house in order.
This won’t do at all.
Via compulsions and potions, Dumbledore gets the Weasley family started and soon Molly is pregnant with a boy destroying her quidditch prospects.
The couple changes their life plans in light of this new development, and decide that Arthur will advance his position as far and as fast as he can and Molly will stay home and raise their child. As far as more children go, they are only going to have 2-3 they’d both like a girl, but if after 3 there is no girl then there will be no more. If they have a girl before then, then that will be all. It’s too hard for the family and will be too hard on Molly to carry so many. Arthur grew up in a huge family and doesn’t ever want to put his kids through the hardships.
Dumbledore is gleaning information in the background like a spider… that won’t do at all.
More compulsions. Potions. And Dumbledore starts digging through his alchemical tomes. Alchemy is all but dead in the isles due completely to Dumbles. He doesn’t want the competition and also doesn’t want what he’s capable of doing to be widely known.
It is alchemically possible to alter the gender of a fetus in the womb. The child will never totally fit in with their siblings because deep down something is wrong, but as far as Dumbles is concerned, it doesn’t matter for the greater good. It is very health costly to the mother, but so long as she survives to bear to the seventh, Dumbles doesn’t especially care.
He compels the Weasley couple to have children until they have a daughter. No matter what.
The first hiccup occurs early on in the 3rd pregnancy. It’s a girl. The Weasley’s are overjoyed…but at the time of birth they are disappointed when the diagnostics are wrong and they welcome Percival…was planning on Pricilla into the family.
The 4th pregnancy was twin boys but otherwise healthy.
5th pregnancy? Another girl, but the prospective parents don’t get their hopes up this time and wait until birth. They hope for a Rhonda. They get a Ronald.
6th pregnancy and prophesied daughter? A BOY! WHAT? This can’t be? Another alchemical draft for the mother and obliviations for the witnesses… and the expected Gethin was born Ginerva and the prophesied pawn is born.
By this time Molly’s body is showing the ravages of so many pregnancies inside of a decade and her once tall, lean, sleek chasers body has been replaced with that of a dumpy housewife.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in England, about 6 months before young Ronald is born a couple by the name of Granger welcome a precious daughter into the world. Over the course of the previous 10 years they have endured the heartache of 2 miscarriages (actually 6, but two were sets of twins before Emma even knew she was pregnant) so will hold their daughter Hermione most dear. Emma is the youngest of 7 children and always dreamed of having a large family herself. But if fate’s plan was to only grant her one she would accept it.

…………………………………………………

17 years later this entire scheme is unraveled after a splinching getting away from the ministry during the horcrux hunt. In all their years of friendship, Hermione realizes she’d never actually been exposed to Ronald’s blood and it wasn’t normal. With the limited facilities she had at her disposal in a tent it took her the better part of 2 weeks to figure out the discrepancies were alchemical in nature and another month of working on it in her spare time to figure out what it was doing.
It wasn’t until reaching shell cottage and having another Weasley (Bill) to test blood from and Fleur to help who was actually taught Alchemy at Beauxbatons that Hermione was able to synthesize a counter agent. Meanwhile Bill was able to quietly get blood samples from all of his siblings, and only Percy and Ginny showed the same discrepancies. Their mother’s blood was way off as well, but differently.
After administering the counter agent to Ronald…they now stood face to face with Rhonda, who for the first time in his (her?) life, wasn’t compulsively hungry…
Hermione also had an inkling as to why Ron might have always been so jealous of other girls getting close to Harry even if he (she?). Ugh… this was going to be so confusing until it is all straightened out… even if Ron didn’t know why he was jealous.
Percy and Ginny weren’t helped until after the end of the final battle but suffice it to say the Weasley’s suddenly had 2 daughters and 5 sons. Percy’s slight build and Ginny’s tomboyishness made much more sense in retrospect.
After getting the entire tale from it, they happily burned Dumbledore’s portrait. Unfortunately there was little more justice they could exact from the man. There was also little that could be done to correct Molly’s health issues.
After an awkward adjustment, Harry found himself with two girlfriends, Hermione, who he had finally confessed his feelings for after Ron left them in the tent and Rhonda Weasley.
Ginny, now Gethin, went on to a professional quidditch career, and married Luna Lovegood.

Captive
''Take it off!'' James could hear voices that were either yelling or crying for help.
He had been taken during one of his missions for the order. It was just supposed to be an easy mission. He and Sirius were supposed to watch some people that were supposedly death eaters, but it was a trap. Sirius got hurt and James got taken captive.
James had a bag over his head, but it got yanked off. He looked around and saw a bunch of people who used to go to school with him. He saw Lucius Malfoy, Barty Crouch Jr, Evan Rosier, and Regulus Black.
''Well, it looks like the golden boy is awake'' Barty taunted. James tried to look around but the light was too bright.
''What do you want from me?'' James asked trying to keep his voice straight, but his voice failed him.
''Oh, we want nothing, our lord wants to speak with you'' Lucius said as a grin had been placed on his face.
The group in front of him began leaving the room he was in except one. Regulus went to James and bent down to the level of his face.
''I'm sorry this happened, sweetheart. But, one day you will understand our ways and why we do all of this'' Regulus kissed James's cheek and then left the room.
After about an hour, a man went into the room, he had dark black hair and beautiful red eyes.
''Mister Potter, we meet at last'' the man said with a dark and deep voice. James was completely mesmerized by the man.
''Who are you?'' James asked. The man put a chair in front of James and took a seat.
''I am Lord Voldemort'' James winced at the name and felt himself pull back.
''I know you have heard things about me from Dumbledore, but they are wrong, let me show you what we do here and decide for yourself'' Voldemort went behind James and untied his hands. ''Come and join me'' he brought his hand forward for James to take it.
James gently took his hand. He did not want to follow Voldemort, but if he had a chance of escaping it is this way.
Voldemort led James outside the room and showed him the different places they have everywhere.
''These rooms are mostly used for healing and after full moons for the werewolves. Here we have a few other kinds of rooms'' he showed James different rooms, the last rooms he showed had children in them.
''We saved these children when the ministry no longer cared for them or cared for their homes''
After 30 minutes of walking around and Voldemort telling James about the things they have and the things, they want gone and changed.
James was given a room. It had a king-sized bed and the whole room had a dark vibe to it.
He got clothes to change into. James changed and got into bed as it was nighttime.
As his head hit the pillow the door opened and closed. There were footsteps going towards him. He felt the bed weight down beside him.
James turned around to find Regulus laying beside him sleeping. He took Regulus in his arms.

So what would happen if in his first life Harry had died and found that he was the master of death. He later found out his friends were paid to be his friends by Dumbledore and he had been manipulated. He got a second chance to relive his life and was a genius, the Dursleys hated him. Then when he went to Hogwarts he went into Slytherin and became good friends with Draco, Blaise and Theo. He then helps Voldemort get back to power because Dumbledore is the true dark lord.

Frickin Dumbledore
Ok so some groundwork.
Some of my detail-remembering may be off.
There’s not a chance in J K’s world (see what I did there?) that other wizards haven’t been conceived with the influence of love potions (see: rape drugs,) so that is no real reason for Riddle to have become Voldy. Like, I’m sorry, but there are sociopaths contributing to society everywhere. So he can’t love. So what? He still chose to be beastly.
HOWEVER. Riddle did NOT choose all of his beastliness. He was horrified by the idea of returning to the orphanage. BEGGED to stay at Hogwarts. A little countryside orphanage in, what, the 30’s-40’s, where we KNOW kid-to-kid abuse happened, that Riddle the terror was scared to return to? Let’s face it, Tom Riddle was a severely abused child who never got counseling, on top of being a sociopath and who only ever got the comfort/attention he wanted needed out of being abusive to his peers.
But. BUT! Here’s the thing: Professor Dippet (two t’s?) didn’t see all this damage. Idk, maybe the ministry deliberately put idiots in charge at Hogwarts, or maybe he was just less involved. He very likely had no idea why Tom didn’t want to leave over the summer. (Especially, re: my PS on this post, the wizard/muggle cultural divide.)
You know who did know?
Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Screw-you-Dumbledore.
He saw it. He knew.
Dumbledore was deputy headmaster; he could have intervened on Tom’s behalf. Could have found a wizarding family or even a less-awful orphanage for him to go to. Could have CONFUNDED A FAMILY INTO BELIEVING HE WAS THEIR SON (ok a stretch but he could’ve.) Could have TAKEN TOM RIDDLE HOME WITH HIM HIMSELF, or SET HIM UP WITH A ROOM IN THE LEAKY CAULDRON, or, basically, done ANYTHING HE WANTED to spare Tom Riddle further abuse.
So why didn’t he?
Ego.
Dumbledore, for all he pretends to recognize his own need for needing “seemly modesty,” is the most egotistical butthead ever. And, in this case, he perpetuated his own abused/witnessing abuse childhood (idk if it’s *exactly* canon but are you suggesting Albus, Aberforth, and Ariana we’re abused? Nvm that’s a different rant.) to hundreds or thousands of kids at Hogwarts.
Kids including Tom Riddle.
Dumbledore refers to Voldy as if he were destined to be evil. As if no one could have prevented it. Some unstoppable tragedy. But—HE could have. Dumbledore. He could have invested in Tom Riddle, preventing the rise of Voldemort and, what, MILLIONS of deaths? He was perfectly poised to do so—he had access. Intelligence. Influence. Funds. But because of his “I-survived-abuse, clever-people-survive” style ego, Dumbledore failed. He FAILED Riddle and, in so doing, all of England.
And you know the worst part? Literally the only thing he learned was to be sneakier. So when a young Mr. Potter was being abused? Dumbledore burrowed deeper into his secrets and lies and kept doing what he had always done.
P. S. My bestie would like me to remember that Tom Riddle was sent back to an orphanage in LONDON during the LONDON BLITZ that poor broken child.

In the evening I switch my reading from physical books to my eReader, mainly because my eyes don't like reading under a lamp much any longer.
Since the MCU and NCIS fics aren't keeping up with my need, I've switched to HP, most particularly Dumbledore bashing. Some Weasley bashing is always acceptable (but not the twins, Bill, and Charlie). Dumbles alone is enough to keep me busy reading.
I'm also thrilled with ones where the Dursleys (or at least Petunia and Dudley) aren't abusive, Harry has a backbone and doesn't fall in with Dumbles' grooming of him, and other AUs of that ilk. Especially Harry raised by someone else.
So. That's another AO3 rabbit hole I've fallen into.

So I've had an idea
Evil Dumbledore fic, Barty Crouch Jr and Evan Rosier where spies for the order. So was Regulus but he went through Sirius and James instead of Dumbledore. Before Reg died him and James were dating and were on the verge of opening up their relationship to include Barty and Evan because why not. But when Reg died James went into hiding with Lily, they were queer platonic still had Harry obviously but in their ideal world he would have had four dads and two mums and a host of aunts and uncles. Sirius and Remus wanted to tell Harry but could never find the right time. No one else really knew. Peter never tried to tell because he thought reg and James broke up in school and just remained oblivious to it all. If Dumbledore did know he didn't want to tell Harry.
I might merge this with my Regulus Black crawling out the lake idea but no living Sirius

Idea AGAIN!
Idea: Not necessarily Harmony, but it could easily be used in such a story. It is relatively easy to assume that if the Death Eaters were making a practice of trapping someone with wards before assaulting their homes that Aurors and Order types would invest themselves in learning a method to escape such wards right. So....what if Lily/James COULD breach the wards the Death Eaters set up, but found themselves trapped instead by something secreted in their own ward scheme? The obvious one to blame would be Pettigrew, but what if it was Dumbles instead? As a way to ensure the prophecy?
